CD/DVD DRIVE IN LAPTOP DOES NOT WORK - A FIX IF OTHER SOFTWARE FIXES DO NOT WORK

I had given up on the drive, googled it, all sort of fixes did not not fix it. But if you have tried the usual fixes e.g uninstalling the driver for the DVD drive, then it could be a physical problem.

I was changing my car air filter to a cone one with a heat shield, I thought that this would also be a good time to clean the mass air sensor, so I sprayed Comma Contact Spray onto it. All was well, and it could save me on fuel so I thought what else could this work on, the idea popped up maybe I can spray it on my DVD drive.

Leave it to dry for half an hour....and it was working again.

Linx Tablet Low Resolution Problem Fix

With some programs once you leave the resolution of the tablet is so low that it is impossible to solve. Even if you go to the desktop, part of the desktop does not respond. I could not find any solutions on the net, though some people did ask for help with this great windows 8.1 tablet. Nor does any run command work without doing something else before hand! I was able to get it to work, by keeping the tablet in a vertical position, than when you go to the desktop, all the desktop is displayed and a long press finds the resolution settings.

They can just be changed.....

Once you are in full resolution, then you can do this:

right click to resolution, make text larger, or smaller, then tick let me choose one scaling option for all of my displays

Possibly the greatest 30's, 40's and 50's expert on film music which made his Sunday show so unique. So many times have I ended the week listening to his show and falling asleep. He has I mean had a unique show on TV every Sunday night.

I cannot believe he will be forgotten, you cannot even listen to any of his shows on the radio 2 site. Nor is his collection available on CD at Amazon.

For usb use - does not have optical so cannot use on ps3. This is my third real 5.1 headphone, so I know a bit! I have tested all channels separately and it is clear separation and the bass frequency does go to 20Hz (most subs do 30-50Hz). The softwared I recognized is the same one from the £30.00 trust external sound card though the driver is different. Less fancy packaging, who cares, at this price. Settings include swap center/ bass and bass enhancement (totally useless ere option) which sends signals under 50Hz to sub.

My other two 5.1 headphones cost over £100 each (including all costs) with a lot of messy wires and a more fancy controls with a little larger speakers, this is very very tidy!!! The subwoofer bass in like thunder! Also I have increased subwoofer sound by 12db this is normal practice with large speaker setups which vary in quality depending on the room acoustics, no problem ere.

It is also a nice touch to add a 24 bit 96000 Khz audio output.

update after 2 weeks use

I still don't miss my large £1000 speaker set up as I prefer to watch films at night, and anyway I do not have a permanent house at the moment. No ear ache either, still content.

Very good audio, power amp player has srs option which I did not have on my xperia ray (license issue). Play almost every day at work for 2 or 3 hours (I have a dead end job - basically I have been doing the same thing for 20 years and I am going to get some cert for it, not exactly the Queen's Silver Jubilee....but!!! :)), I only play FLAC. The new vlc player also works well, flac only - never play mp3!
Also Beats Audio adds extra volume enhancement without distortion, better audio than xperia ray.

gps is as good as it can be, use free gps from navfree, works off-line too, very accurate but I still prefer to use 2 gps devices the other being sony psp gps - personal preference when driving.

The video works well in light, it is easy to watch video even in the car. As it is not too large or distracting, with higher contrast still visible with driving routes I know by heart.

Tesco sim works well which did not work well with my xperia ray which was also a smaller phone.

After 6 months of use mainly listening to FLAC audio, and playing paper plane 2 (free) and 3 - video seemed to be going choppy, and iplayer went seriously bad including video playback, but a hard reset fixed the issue, though the xperia ray could do a reset without deleting apps, but this was almost double the price and it did need resets once in a while!

It has a lower processor of 600Hz Cortex A5 but it can still play Air Navy Fighters well enough, and this is a very good fighter plane simulation which works with the motion sensor!!!

U can keep adding apps and moving to micro sdhc card whereas with my Xperia i was always deleting apps that i could not move and i needed another app to move the apps whereas the c does it for u in apps so it just feels more generous than the Ray (which probably is a good comparison phone)???

I asked somebody at work who has an iphone to try out iplayer, it was just a little bit quicker - then he played a video and said - no problem, it works. But I pointed out that it had stutter and audio and video were out of sync! So this was problem not with the c desire but with the iplayer.

Managing Data On A 3 TB drive like Western Digital

I have been using a 3TB external drive for 6 months almost every few days. It is quite likely that an error can pop up which may not be obvious.

Deleted files are not being shown on the recycle bin. So when you defrag with Windows 7 defrag there is a freeze as it cannot defrag inside the recycle bin of the external drive. If u have a large number of files disk check for errors in properties can take a very long time.

You suddenly notice that a reading or uncompress error has occurred when trying to copy something from the disk though it may well be stable on the drive. Though the problem seems to disappear....for a few days than it becomes a more obvious error.

Solution

Create 2 partitions of 1.5TB and move all the data to the other partition, then format the old partition. Why take chances with fixes? This will also check that all the data is reading well.

Power amp is an excellent player that can also play FLAC. Though the default player for the Sony Xperia cannot. It can also resume music when a headphone is placed back on the socket with both Xperia and HTC. gOD bLESS tHEM [++

I also noticed that the Xperia is not allowed to have a SRS music enhancer WITH THE POWER AMP PLAYER but on HTC IT IS THERE, even the cheaper HTC Desire C DOES HAVE it. This could be because of license issues.

HTC does have Beats Audio, but this is considered a CON generally. I have not really even bothered as it is connected with Dr Dre:

who has to sell these expensive headphones so he can make expensive videos. But it appears that it is all a visual experience - respect.

Whereas Jet Audio Plus does not include the legendary BBE effect, but it did in an early version. That is why it is so cheap, but the new version can play 24 bit, my theory on 24 bit music is that you need speakers and air before it is listened because the air resonates and correctly configures the musical accents.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU Cooler review

First impressions were that it was quite large and the heat sink had a weight to it. As I only has a small motherboard AsRock 760GM-GS3, I had to remove one of the RAM cards so my system is still 64 bit but not 8 GB but 4 GB. Then I put the stock cooler back in to test if it will work, and it did work with 4GB RAM.

It is interesting to note that if you start a computer with no heatsink, leaving the processor naked - the temperature of the processor will increase so much that the CPU will not boot.

First time I have done this and a I have an AMD 3 Socket. I put the screws in the flaps first, then tried without being able to fit it in - kept hitting the processor with this 500 gram thing thinking I had broken something, so then I bent the heatsink panels and it was too loose, then I took it off and bent the heatsink panels again - put some new thermal paste Arctic Silver 5, which means I do not have to do all this again in 6 months as with the MK II default paste which I wiped off, then it worked when I heard that click, not too loud or too quiet. It is a weighty thing for 2 plastic clips - no wonder stock coolers are used, it is less of a risk when delivering the box to hell knows where.

I also have 2 other exhaust fans 120mm one at the back and one which is loose and unscrewed sitting on the floor below the motherboard, or fatherboard as they call it in Germany.

For a 3.2 Processor running at about 3.18, with PCI Express frequency over-clocked to 104 (this will turn your CPU into a high-end Blu-Ray player or a PCI express 2.0 Nvidia card run like 3.0 card putting it bluntly).

I was really amazed by the transparency of colours of the Blu-Ray which would expect from a more high end graphics card than a GeForce GTS 450 1GB.
Conclude:

The temperature of the motherboard was mid twenties because of a chasis fan so that was not a problem. The temperature of the CPU would sometimes go over 50C at idle with the stock cooler. Especially because the heating had been fixed and the room was always too hot, so I opened the windows as it is an air cooler - it can only work if the air in the room is cool. Then I tried it with fingers crossed: the CPU temperature started falling gradually to 35C at idle.

Last thoughts:

Cuda may actually work now without the CPU over-heating and switching off at above 65C. I have also updated my processor to 1.2. I would be a bit worried about moving the desktop because of the size and weight of the cooler with a loose 120mm fan in the case. Arctic Cooling 5 does thin out on the initial use and then it takes 50 to 200 hours to thicken. Time will tell....

UPDATE

The thermal paste is starting to work after 2 days. Also the fan is running at 5650 revolutions which it was not before so CPU temp is 25 C MB temp 24 C. Cannot control speed of fan - but I have over-clocked to 3.6 with a 3.2 CPU with lowered voltages.

UPDATE 2

Voltages have been set to default because of stability issues. 2 120mm fans will consume voltage. The super increase in fan speed led to 25 C even with load - but it appears to be a random event (an anomaly) maybe a power surge but the asROCK can deal with it. Re-positioned 1 fan towards the front so it will blow sorry suck air in. Though the case has nothing designed for a frontal fan, instead of buying another case I tied it sideways with wires where the screws go in. Looks much better too inside, and it will be easier to move.

I was checking if I could play HD video content with BBE setting. And the answer is yes. But u have to load the codecs - I mean install them, but then go into options - preferences and find the codec settings and change output to 7.1 speakers or whatever. Remember

will not work unless u tick the box for subwoofer. I fully tested the 5.1 and it worked with BBE settings. One interesting point I found out was that BBE viva is similar to DFX audio enhancer in that it plays the right speaker partly in the left speaker, and the right speaker in the left speaker. If u play around with codecs u may get dts hd ma working which can be done with the free Pot Player.

Moto for today is do something fresh, I have seen many young poeple become old too quickly. Blame it on ~~the Boogie~~ Political Climate Atmosphere.

First it does not charge on a plug USB, use your PC to charge, then u have 2 options. Option 1 actually syncs the time and date. So it can be used as a watch. I have tried to keep time with android, or my Sony Walkman NWZ-S639FB and it does not replace the need for a watch.

~~Do not use with MAC, not compatible.~~ If it is bricked use tcctool-driver-win32 to debrick it. But this is a Windows hack!

Soft reset, hold + and - volume button for 4 seconds ~~or maybe 10 seconds if it does not start~~. Note that it was not starting at first, so I did a soft reset and updated it with new firmware 1.08 at cowonglobal then it solved the starting problem. Though it does start auto when you plug in the usb, but this was a big heart stopper! Perhaps it needed a day or 2 to warm up.

4 - On using as a book reader

It can be used as book reader but can only only read text files. First it does remember your last page, but more importantly you can control the font of the book you are reading, this method also changes the general font used by the i10:

Copy a ttf font on the system directory of the player and rename it to USER.ttf

5 - On radio

Built in speaker - try mono setting on radio with BBE MP (which is suited for mp3) - note originally mp3 was created for radio broadcast. This may be the best portable radio with built-in speaker.

You do not need to plug in the headphones for the radio aerial, if you have connected this to the laptop - just leave the usb lead in, it also works.

6 - Sound quality

is a definition of sound, I was playing -So- remastered in FLAC (on BBE headphone setting 2), you feel the bass in the headphones pumping air. Low frequencies are very smooth, and speaker separation is as good as it gets. Though I used cheap headphones Sennheiser HD201 Closed Back Headphones as I use it in the bath with a Kindle water proof case and the headphones get wet! I also have had a Samsung U5 and an Archos 5 which are also FLAC players but they seem to have a duller and less detailed sound, but I have worked out how to add a music visualiser to my Archos 5 (with no hacking) and it does have over 100 Giga. I also use Power Amp on Android through Xperia Ray which can play Flac but I am always trying to equalise the sound, what you get with Cowon is better sound without the need to equalise it as with other players. But for mp3 I would use Sony Walkman NWZ as it has better control and more options for mp3, my custom setting is max clear bass with eq curve going from low bass to high trebble with Arena setting) and it can play iplayer content. I do not like messing with eq with Flac, especially if it has been remastered!

7 - Video

Played all my avi files, pretty well, it does have subtitle support - not tested. FLV files do not work, but my downloader can also download mp4 files from youtube which work. Video can also be set to full screen.

To show image when playing music include in the music folder the image and rename it to cover.jpeg - presto!

update - after 1 month

It does charge from plug, perhaps it was because it needed an initial charge.

It won an award for design last year in Japan.

Android version of JetAudio does not have BBE, but the 1.1.1 version has.

Video uses BBE setting. This is a big thing - really!!!

It does display Karaoke sync lyrics - but not really a big collection, use iAUDIO LDB Manager. If you are a Madonna or Bob Marley fan you should find maybe several tracks. You can edit the sync quite easily to get it perfect, if u want to or maybe not....I do not know?

Last Word about Archos 5

Though the Archos 5 is not that bad it does have a very natural sound, and YouTube still works with it. I use DaTuner to make it as a visualiser, and it works internally as the Archos 5 has no mic.

xperia ray GPS not working offline with the latest update

So the question is why does the GPS on xperia ray not work?

I have searched on the net and there are no answers, and I am using the latest firmware, so there are a couple of programs that claim to fix GPS and one does not work and the other needs to have the xperia ray rooted (but u cannot root it with the latest firmware).

FIX : How to fix GPS in off line mode for Xperia phones:

First if the phone is several months old reset it, but keep all settings, nothing will be lost. u will still have all your applications and settings working on the phone.

Second - put the wireless OFF, then the GPS will work.

When you want to use the wireless then put it back on!

HOW TO IMPROVE SUBWOoFER SOUND IN A 5.1 HI-FI SYSTEM

1 -MAKE IT LOUD

This is no small thing, I even tried using 2 subs to get a louder shake in the room. But the first thing is that the sub woofer does not have be on the right side of the system. If you cannot hear it well, try the left hands side of the system - presto - now it is too loud!

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THE ROOM IS A PART OF THE SYSTEM - ALL ABOUT FLOOR BOARDS, BACKGROUND READING - EARTHQUAKES, OR THE DEATH OF DISCO.

2 - SECRET METHOD TO ~~DRASTICALLY~~ IMPROVE SOUND

How to really improve the sound of a sub-woofer. It should sound like a tenor but perhaps not like like Pavarotti. If you go to an expert Hi-Fi store they would give you a cheap RCA cable and that would be it and they will give say an expensive Coaxial cable for the dvd player, now this cable has a lower resistance and better shielding. Now that I have re-tired my very old dvd player, I thought I would try that cable on the Sub-WOOfer and presto, it is like the the bass is singING from the Sub, it also creates a better harmony and diversity of sound with the other 7 speakers as I have a 7.1 system. This is an original idea, because ..... it is my idea, but try using different Coaxial cables too!

P.S

I know with a satellite system u have cheap wiring, and there are not much options. But because the length of the wires, you can drastically improve the sound by putting them very high up and increase the separation of the speakers, and because they are so small u just need a nail to hang them up. This actually looks good too, and it is fun to do.

3 PC AUDIO ENHANCERS (WITH UPDATE AT END)

srs audio essentials vs hd audio lab

The new version hd audio lab called srs audio essentials has an actual 5.1 interface which displays sounds from all speakers. But though the sound is very warm and immense especially when watching 5.1 films in can make a thousand pound system seem 3 times more expensive, even on a laptop there is a special setting for inbuilt speakers.

It also automatically adjusts the enhancement for music and film. I was really impressed!

Though I found a bug with srs audio essentials(using latest version to date) where the sub woofer volume is lowered in 5.1 mixes to almost being non-existent, though is a definite problem with volume, and it has an extra volume control that u have to pay for, probably to correct the issue, but it does not for the sub woofer!

Whereas the old version does not have a fancy display of levels (5.1 or stereo) it does sound correct in the volume department, and sub woofer is sound is correct too. Also the hd audio lab has 7.1 sound which the new version has not. Though hd audio lab is not updated it does work with Windows 8 Pro, which still has not been released and feels and sounds just like the new program but with sub woofer sound.

This improves also 24bit sound at 96, though it is a 16 bit output program! U can still feel that seed in the music but it is enhanced! It is all very addictive!

This has really cool settings for old and jazzy music. No 5.1 sound.

DFX Audio Enhancer

This is very popular and new support offers 7.1 sound, also it is a 24 bit sound output program. So it is an alternative sound enhancer for movies to SRS but it has no movie presets, just light processing mode seems to be suitable for films! Another great kind of enhancer, but better for new music, whereas Breakaway is better for old music like Bing Crosby and Jazz stuff. Though I was impressed by DFX pre-set for Piano.

Last Words

You can install all 3 together on a PC or Laptop. But if u want to go back to the SRS old model u have to uninstall the new version which just goes to show that the new version is not really new, but more of a re-working than a re-imagining of the original.

It is a little more complicated. Let me begin, if u install DFX then u install PotPlayer - they become integrated or in Zen language they become one. Then if u put DFX off u get an unclear and muffled signal, then when you put in on (THAT IS THE DFX) PotPlayer signal is great.

Also 5.1 sound was being played as 2.0 sound, so I had to unistall the other 2 audio enhancers. I did find a preset for movies on DFX which sounded better than the SRS enhancer, u just add 1 to each individual setting for light settings 2 preset and then u can save it and call it movies, also use acoustic jazz to replaced oldies preset in Breakaway.

Though for laptops I think u may be able to keep them all installed, that is all 3 enhancers. But overall DFX is the overall winner. Though my system is £1000 pound one, I did listen again to a £3,500 system - I believe that software enhancers are much better and cheaper than hardware enhancers i.e larger speakers and amps etc.

DFX also does work with Power DVD, but you have to reinstall Power DVD, as they become inetergrated and work together. Though obviously the output sound will not be dts hd ma, as that signal is converted to PCM and sent to the DFX enhancer which would send it to your amp, which would read it as PCM. So you want dts hd ma output, you may need to exit DFX and then reinstall that player....perhap the new media players (I use Asus HD2 and WD elements) would integrate enhancers....but hardware media players are are a very slow moving market!

For the sake of Stoics (LAPTOP TEST)

My laptop does not have hdmi, but it does not matter as I used a 5.1 trust USB sound-card connected to 5.1 headphones (that is true and not virtual headphones). I thought it best to just install DFX and uninstall the other 2 - just to simplify things, I found that it was still stereo, and that trust audio card has got two drivers, so I had to disable the stereo on one, then it worked and I used my movie preset which had worked on speakers so it worked again beautifully on the 5.1 headphones.

This test was more complex as I used an external sound card, and SRS could not handle the external sound card (and this is the new version of SRS Audio.Essentials.1.2.3.12) but DFX could handle the 5.1 card and the 5.1 was fully tested i.e each individual speaker!

I did notice that DFX audio enhancer puts part of the left speaker into the right speaker and vice versa. It does this for the back speakers too, but not for the centre speaker. It does seem to do more that just equalize and compress or limit the sound? But it would be very different to what surround sound headphones use to enhance the sound into virtual 3d, as DFX audio enhance is intended for real 5.1 headphones or 7.1 speaker systems.

This is thE most ugliEst thing I ever seen that is supposed to be a dignified Representative if a scientific chart that is creating clarity from the usual mess that we humans call a dustbin if a mess in the style of aquarious doing a backwater stroke in chilies of acid waters!!!!!!!!!!!!
