Try a new sport with Chick-fil-A in upcoming Power Camp 2013! The Chick-fil-A Foundation is partnering with Fellowship of Christian Athletes to invite youth near Atlanta to Morehouse College for some new opportunities in sports.

Darrlynn Brister, spokeswoman for the Chick-fil-A Foundation reported that a day camp, Power Camp 2013, is being held where kids can try some non-traditional sports, and get training from accomplished athletes from high school to the pros.

Three camps are being held: June 10-14, June 17-21 and June 24-28. All camps will take place at Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Registration for Power Camp 2013 is now open. To sign up, visit one of the following organizations: Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, Raising Expectations, Castleberry Hill Neighborhood Association or Pheonix Boys Association.

The camp is offered to youth from all neighboring communities in and around Atlanta.

The Derby Brunch Hatwalk event on Saturday, May 11 begins at 10 a.m. and a welcome beverage will await guests. The event ends around 2:15 p.m. so you will have more time to shop in the Hatwalk Vendor MarketPlace this year than before. Valet parking is available upon arrival.

WHO/WHAT: To celebrate the official start of its 2013 junior golf program, Canongate Golf is hosting a free Junior Golf Expo at its Georgia National Golf Club and its Bentworth Golf Club. These free events serve as an opportunity to introduce kids 5 and up to the game of golf and to develop current junior player’s games through Canongate’s series of summer camps, Get Golf Ready program, junior competition and more.

As a way to introduce the game to kids, the Junior Golf Expo’s will also feature fun activities including golf lessons and sports specific training and movement stations. ATLANTA - May 1, 2013 – New Leaders Council – Atlanta, Truly Living Well Center or Urban Agriculture (TLW), and WonderRoot will host Crafting Bowls for Change, a community-based food and art celebration on Saturday, May 25, 2013 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Wheat Street Garden, 75 Hilliard Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30312.

Crafting Bowls for Change is a one-day event to raise funds in support of Wholesome Wave of Georgia and NLC -Atlanta. TLW’s partnership with Wholesome Wave allows every SNAP, WIC, or SFNMP dollar spent at its farmers market to double its value when purchasing healthy locally grown produce. Each year the New Leaders Council - Atlanta trains the next generation of progressive leaders in Georgia and works to solve problems like food insecurity in underserved communities.

"As the founding City Council sponsor of Truly Living Well's Wheat Street Urban Farm and the New Leaders Council, I am delighted to see these two groups partnering with WonderRoot to increase Atlantans' awareness about food deserts and food insecurity. District 2's Boulevard corridor, the host neighborhood for this event, has the highest concentration of poverty in the southeastern United States. I am hopeful that Crafting Bowls for Change will help us place a glaring spotlight on the reality of poverty and hunger in the neighborhood that raised Martin Luther King Jr.", stated New Leaders Council Honorary Chair and City Councilmember Kwanzaa Hall.

Community leaders and members are invited to share a simple and delicious meal of soup served in a handcrafted bowl at Wheat Street Gardens on Saturday, May 25th. ATLANTA – April 16, 2013 –The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation has generously given The Children's Museum of Atlanta a two-year, $100,000 grant in support of its two community-based outreach programs, Connected Learning…Connected Communities and Access It! In their sixth year, these community programs fulfill a great need for outreach and educational programs in specific Atlanta neighborhoods. The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation has been essential to The Children’s Museum of Atlanta’s ability to fulfill its mission through partnerships with these communities.

The Connected Learning...Connected Communities outreach program was created in 2007 and provides educational programming that is intimately woven into the fabric of seven Atlanta neighborhoods: Pittsburgh, Adair Park, Mechanicsville, Vine City, Boulevard, Old 4^th Ward, and English Avenue. Each month, The Children’s Museum of Atlanta’s Imaginators – their dedicated troupe of professional actors and educators – visit with children at 26 participating schools and child development centers to share enlightening and fun educational content that aligns with the Georgia Performance Standards. A strong emphasis on literacy is incorporated into the programs.

A “Museum in a Box” customized curriculum toolbox is delivered to each school involved in Connected Learning…Connected Communities. These teacher toolkits enable children to experience the life lessons and learning skills incorporated in each of the Museum’s feature exhibits. Each “Museum in a Box” is developed based on the Museum’s feature exhibit learning concepts and is complete with curriculum plans and materials. Free admission for field trips and events and free transportation to the Museum aboard The Children’s Museum of Atlanta’s bus – Imagine It! Express – is available to the Connected Learning…Connected Learning schools and child development centers.

The Museum’s Access It! program provides free and reduced Museum admission to low-income families and Title I schools. The program increases access to high-quality early learning opportunities in school settings for children from low-income families. It also provides an experience that can strengthen family bonds and provide a safe environment for play and learning.

Like children's museums throughout the world, The Children’s Museum of Atlanta exists to support the very simple but profound truth that young children learn through play. The Museum offers children the opportunity to use all of their senses in a unique and interactive way, while developing their knowledge and understanding of Reading, Social Studies, Math, Science, Language, and the Arts. Together, these specific outreach programs typically reach more than 28,000 children annually. In addition to regular visits and curriculum materials, the Museum provides play and learning sessions and cultural experiences for children and their families.

Mother's Day Brunch at Georgia Aquarium

Join Georgia Aquarium for its annual Mother’s Day Brunch in the Oceans Ballroom on Sunday, May 12. Wolfgang Puck Catering is preparing a lavish buffet sure to be the most exquisite fare she’s tasted all year. Seating will begin at 11 a.m. No other Mother’s Day brunch invites families to dine in front of the tranquil Ocean Voyager window or interact with the beluga whales and then spend the day visiting the Aquarium.

The buffet will feature dishes such as Black Pepper Crusted Prime Rib of Beef, Made-to-Order Omelets, Mascarpone Stuffed French Bread with Apples and Spicy Candied Pecans, and a vast selection of assorted pastries, prepared to the high standards of Wolfgang Puck Catering. This meal wouldn’t be complete without a taste or two from our assortment of decadent desserts from the Chef’s Selection of five desserts. Tickets for members are $45 for adults and $20 for children. Tickets for guests are $66.95 for adults and seniors and $14.95 for children (3-12). Project Identity’s Summer Institute – Middle School offers an exciting opportunity for middle school male students to enjoy accelerated learning, sports and activities on the historic campus of Morehouse College. During the 3-week day program, Summer Institute – Middle School offers expert instruction in the arts, sciences, mathematics and additional topics specially selected for the interests of middle school male students. By bringing together students with similar abilities and diverse backgrounds, the program creates an environment of growth but also challenging, but most of all, fun.

All students who successfully complete their course will receive a certificate of completion.

Supervision

Program participants are supervised throughout the program by a team of carefully selected and trained Project Identity Summer Mentors who are current Morehouse College Students. Project Identity staff members are also on-site each day for the entire program.

A TYPICAL DAY AT THE SUMMER INSTITUTE – MIDDLE SCHOOL

Monday – Friday

Commuter Student Drop off - 8:45am

Classes in Session - 9:00am - 12:00 noon
Classes meet every morning for 3 hours. Summer mentors escort students to and from class.

Lunch – 12:15pm - 1:00pm
Lunch is served in Chivers dining halls. Students are supervised by Summer Mentors.

Afternoons - 1:10pm – 4:15pm
Afternoon classes and/or sports activities are in session.

Student Pick up - 4:30pm

Parents should plan to drop off their student on campus at 8:45am and pick them up at 4:30pm. The drop off and pick up location will be disclosed when participants are accepted. Students on campus after 4:30pm will be assessed a Extended Day fee.

Field Trip
There is a field trip scheduled for the last Friday of the program. PI staff and Summer Mentors chaperone field trip.

PROJECT IDENTITY Summer Institute gives rising 9th through rising 12th grade minority male high school students an exciting glimpse into academic college life.

Open to in-state and out-of-state students, this 3-week residential program replicates the college experience with an intense curriculum and enrichment activities to assist in developing their academic, social and leadership skills. Located on the campus of one of the nations largest, private liberal arts college for men, Morehouse College, Project Identity Summer Institute – High School believes that students succeed when given the tools they need in order to pursue higher education.

PROJECT IDENTITY Summer participants experience being independent by living on campus and learning in a structured and supervised environment.

Summer Institute – High School students live together in a residential housing and participate in an intense curriculum. Participants are taught by faculty and are also involved in enrichment activities including preceptorials on various subjects relating to college life and everyday life experiences, community service activities, and field trips.

Program Requirements:

Must be a male rising 9th through rising 12th grade student in high school
Applicants must have sound academic ability
Preferably have taken the PSAT/SAT, or ACT
Two letters of recommendations from school counselors or school personnel
Official school transcript

When I was finished my doctoral research on the achievement gap in the southeastern United States, I started looking for a way to put what I’d learned through academics into practical use. I wanted to join the movement to diminish the critical academic deficit that students in low income areas face. I was regularly asking myself, “Where do I go from here?” and was searching for options. Ultimately, I decided that I wanted to make a concrete difference by becoming a teacher.

After a conscientious investigation of many certification programs, I found Georgia Teaching Fellows and its branch in Atlanta. It was by far the most credible platform to launch my teacher preparation campaign.

I chose Georgia Teaching Fellows as my pathway to teaching because of it offers significant resources, is a structured and highly selective program, provides innovative training for teacher excellence, and has a data-driven, rigorous approach for academic achievement outcomes. This is exactly what I needed. My empowering experience began with an intense, professional interview. After I was accepted into the program, I relocated from Puerto Rico to Atlanta to begin my summer training program.

Summer training was a full immersion process into the discipline of classroom education. I learned how to maintain high expectations for my students both in the quality of their academic work and in their behavior. I received an introduction to several different learning theories. I was exposed to a plethora of literary and technological resources and a structured format of quality instruction. What I appreciated most as a learner was that the program hosted a constructivist approach to training; our sessions were hands-on, collaborative, and based on authentic experiences. It was not too long after the program began that I realized that I was in the right place at the right time. There’s no better feeling for an educator.

I successfully completed the summer program and was immediately hired as a sixth grade, Special Education teacher of English Language Arts. I was prepared for this opportunity because of my intensive training with GTF.

As a special educator, I have several different responsibilities. I teach five different classes. Two of my classes are resource classes; for these, I am the lead instructor working with a small group of students who need lots of individual attention. I also do some team teaching with another English teacher in a larger classroom setting. Team teaching is a great opportunity for students with special needs to be integrated in a traditional classroom setting, but still get the differentiation support that they need to be successful.

Because of the rigorous training, practical help, and unlimited exposure I still receive from GTF’s teacher coaching staff, I am experiencing success as an educator. I am constantly encouraged knowing that I have not simply been cast into the professional sea of teaching to sink or swim. I benefit from current, frequent classroom visits, on-site coaching, classroom evaluations, numerous emails, and the accessibility and prompt responses from site staff. The only way I could fail in this professional endeavor would by through deliberate choice. As a result of the quality of the ongoing support from GTF staff, my success an effective educator is inevitable. Thanks, Georgia Teaching Fellows!
