Procrastination is the bane of most, if not all, college students. By the time we reach college, many of us are already experts at avoiding the inevitable. “Oh, we’ll get to it,” we say. And most of us do. We get it done, but not without a constant and looming pressure that builds until, the night before, we cram, sometimes all night long, to finish. The result? Seldom our best work. Was it worth it? Not a chance. So why do we procrastinate over and over again? (Read the Rest)

A liberal arts degree is one of the most diverse and intellectually stimulating educations a student can earn today. Whether your focus is in art history, English, geography or philosophy, liberal arts majors prepare students to work in a wide range of careers, using the invaluable skills they’ve learned in class. Here are 10 ways to promote your liberal art major on the job market:

Highlight Your Interpersonal Skills: Liberal arts majors are the quintessential communicators. They enjoy talking, listening and asking questions while engaging in meaningful conversations. If this accurately describes you, it’s important to let your strong interpersonal skills show through during interviews and job-related conversations. Don’t shy away when asked about social, economic and political topics that you can expound on. These invaluable skills will set you apart from other candidates, who often struggle to listen closely, answer open-ended questions and ask important questions when necessary.

Describe Your Adaptability: With a liberal arts education, you are prepared to handle anything that may be thrown at you. It’s important to promote your adaptability to change and how you deal with change. Liberal arts education is based on the premise of history, evolution and conflict resolution. Throughout your studies, you’ve adapted to different changes and shifting ideas or opinions. Perhaps, you worked a part-time job or were involved in an extracurricular activity during school, which forced you to manage change and become more flexible. Even if you cannot cite personal examples of adapting to change, you can talk about your willingness to adapt to changing positions and duties, as well as gaining new skills.

Show Your Critical and Analytical Thinking Skills: Throughout your liberal arts studies, you’ve been exposed to a wide range of subjects that promote discussion and debate. You’ve also learned how to absorb and understand complex information through careful analysis and critical thinking. Employers like knowing that you’re a deep thinker, who takes the time to look at every situation from several different viewpoints before acting irrationally. However, it’s also important to note that you’re not afraid to act quickly, when need be.

Promote Teamwork: Liberal arts majors spend a great deal of their college career engaging in group discussions, giving presentations and working as a team to complete projects. Whether you’ve noticed it or not, this kind of team building has helped you develop as a student and job candidate. Of course employers want to know that you can work independently, without a lot of direction and guidance, but they also want you to be able to work well as a team member. Go ahead and cite examples of working in teams for a school project or extracurricular activity. It’ll show that you’re cooperative, empathetic and an effective leader.

Show Your Written and Oral Communication Skills: There’s no doubt about it – liberal arts majors have excellent written and oral communication skills. Whether it’s from all of those research papers or heated political debates, these activities have served you some good, and now is the time to let these skills show through. Communication skills are the most important qualities an employer looks for in an applicant. Having the ability to write well and speak clearly and intelligently will do wonders for you, as long as you show these skills to potential employers.

Show That You’re Willing to Take Risks: Liberal arts majors are no strangers to taking risks. Just the fact you chose a major that gets criticized and overlooked a lot, shows that you can overcome challenges and naysayers. In this current job market, you cannot afford to be overly picky about what jobs you take or what job duties you’re willing to do. All college graduates have to start somewhere, and it typically begins at the bottom. Taking a risk by accepting a so-so job could lead to great things in your future, and that experience will always be better than none.

Highlight Your Diversity: Even though liberal arts is a pretty common degree, it’s no longer the most popular field of study today. As the job market changes and college students transition to more narrowly-focused degrees, your liberal arts education will continue to stand out. You’ve probably taken everything from history, anthropology to classic literature and have a breadth of knowledge in a wide range of topics, and can discuss a little bit about everything. Use this to your advantage and talk to employers about your diverse education.

Show That You’re an Avid Learner: Liberal arts majors are avid learners who have a genuine interest in a range of subjects. Employers want to hire graduates who enjoy learning and want to explore topics in their entirety. As a liberal arts graduate, you should promote your willingness to learn and gain new skills. Your eagerness to learn also shows that you are capable of taking on new responsibilities and want to keep growing as an employee.

Promote Your Problem-Solving Skills: As a liberal arts student, there isn’t a problem or task too complex for you to handle. Using the skills you learned as an undergrad, you are trained to dissect problems, analyze issues and develop practical solutions. All employers can use workers with strong problem-solving skills, and you should certainly promote this during interviews.

Show Your Business Savvy Skills: Liberal arts graduates have a general understanding of business topics and possess important technical skills needed to excel in various career fields. It’s important to show employers that you have the ability to think critically and solve complex problems that could be used in several different business jobs. If you want to work in business, you have to stress these skills and your interest in a business career. Make employers see how your skills are relevant to their needs and your willingness to learn additional skills can help them.

GraduationSource an Graduation Solutions LP Company has been outfitting the World’s Students with quality products since 1960. The company was founded over 30 years ago in Rye, New York as a distributor of promotional products. The corporate headquarters are currently located in Port Chester, NY a city thirty minutes from New York City. Through the years the company naturally shifted towards the manufacture, distribution and sale of quality graduation products / regalia to schools and institutions worldwide. The Graduation-based endeavor was started in the early 1990′s and has flourished into a full-force initiative, utilizing a successful formula for products, service, and customer retention. This formula included the development of our own graduation products, utilizing the industry’s best materials and innovative design.

Accordingly during the early 1990′s we focused our financial abilities on graduation gowns, caps, and tassels, establishing an ever-growing array of graduation accessories. This process allowed us to redevelop our target demographic focusing on more of a domestic-based segment. With this process came the ability and mission to prepare, submit, and obtain bids for governmental based agencies and private entities alike within the United States. GraduationSource an Graduation Solutions LP Company prides itself in its strong values, personal customer service practices, and extraordinary products. Our model has proven to serve and satisfy over 30,000 schools worldwide. We continue to look to improve our company and products, with a continuous drive towards excellence in the realm of accomplishment and commencement products.

Today GraduationSource an Graduation Solutions LP Company has established a full line of Graduation Regalia, ranging from Preschool-Kindergarten, Elementary-High School, and College-Faculty Regalia, containing traditional graduation caps and gowns, along with an array of graduation accessories. GraduationSource an Graduation Solutions LP Company also provides the full capabilities to develop custom solutions / products for graduations. No event or function deems itself as too large or miniscule for our dedicated staff of representatives to tackle. In addition to graduation products, GraduationSource an Graduation Solutions LP Company has ventured into such scholastic based markets as Team Sports Apparel and Chenille Letters / Varsity Jackets. Please feel free to contact us with any questions pertaining to our company, products, or fulfillment processes. We are at the forefront of technology, business innovation, and social responsibility, with the goal of providing our customers with the highest quality experience possible.

This may sound like an issue for the high school debate club, but it’s arguably a more suitable subject for cost-benefit analysis. Is the classic, four-year, liberal arts education a dying model?

A college degree used to be the ticket to a middle-class life, says Richard K. Vedder, director of the Center for College Affordability and Productivity and professor of economics at Ohio University.

“Now we graduate more people from college than we have jobs for,” he explains. “A college diploma doesn’t really cut it anymore as a sure path to success. Nowadays you need a masters degree or an M.B.A. One-quarter of fast-food restaurant managers have college diplomas.”

That may help explain consecutive 10 percent annual increases in vocational, technical and community college enrollment and the closure of dozens of traditional liberal arts colleges.

A Pew Research Center survey of 220,000 incoming freshman for the 2009-2010 academic year found that 56.5 percent said it was “very important” to pick a college whose graduates found good jobs.

“Skeptics now treat the study of liberal arts and humanities as luxuries that are not especially germane to preparing students to compete with peers from other nations in a global economy rocked by recession,” Undersecretary of Education Martha J. Kanter said in a 2010 speech. “The implication of all this is that liberal arts colleges provide a boutique, if charmingly antiquated, education for the 21st century.”

Analysts note, however, that there’s also skepticism about the education of students who follow a more career-specific track because they tend to lack the skills in critical thinking, writing and analysis that are necessary for success.

“Too many students are coming out of institutions who can’t put into words what they want to say, who are unable to incorporate different perspectives into their thinking and planning,” says Carrie Besnette Hauser, vice president for institutional advancement at Metropolitan State College of Denver.

For that reason and others, “The liberal arts are not going the way of the Oldsmobile,” said Kanter in her speech.

Still, for a growing number of families the choice between critical thinking and marketable skills may be a matter of economic reality. Those affected by corporate downsizing or government layoffs can’t afford the four-year, liberal-arts model, says Betty Krump, executive director of the American Technical Education Association.

“I think our society has figured out that technical education is the key to our future success, and that someone with a two-year associate degree or technical diploma will make more money entering the workforce than a person with a bachelor’s degree,” says Krump.

Even traditional champions of humanities education don’t disagree.

“It seems to me that the four-year program in the liberal arts and sciences is one of the genuine glories of American higher education, and a genuine American contribution to education worldwide,” says S. Frederick Starr, a research professor at John Hopkins University and president from 1983-1994 of Oberlin College, a classic liberal arts college in Ohio. “But I also regret that top liberal arts programs are already out of reach of more than a few good students.”

Another Pew Research study shows that the average debt load of a 2008 college graduate with a BA degree was some $23,000, versus $17,000 in 1996, a 50 percent increase in inflation-adjusted dollars.

Those predicting the death of the liberal arts degree also point to Roger Baldwin, an education professor at Michigan State University, whose recent study found that the number of liberal-arts colleges shrank from 212 in 1990 to 136 in 2009.

Among the most notable is Antioch College, which suspended operations in 2008.

Some of them were small institutions with limited endowments, and thus tuition driven.

“Others will get in trouble over the next 10 years, if costs keep going up,” adds Vedder, a member of Pres. George W. Bush’s Commission on the Future of Higher Education.

Steven C. Bahls, president of the Augustana College, a liberal arts institution in Illinois, is determined to stay off the hit list.

Citing his “post-recession strategic plan,” Bahls says the college’s art department has added a major in graphic design, and the physics department an engineering track.

Vedder says such schools are making the right move by evolving their curricula in more vocational directions.

“That’s happening in some prestige schools, but less so—still, even Harvard toys with the idea of courses with a more vocational orientation,” says Vedder.

Somewhere between the liberal arts and vocational training models lies a hybrid version, where, for instance, a philosophy major might spend summers working in a bank.

“Higher education and the job market are not mutually exclusive,” says Besnette of Metro State College. “Higher ed needs to prepare students for what the world is. As a student, you invest in yourself to become employable. It’s a perfect world to learn your theory at school and get your applied training at an on-the-job apprenticeship.”

“If I were running a liberal arts college, that would be the way I’d go,” says Vedder. “I’d pump my alumni for internships.”

It’s that time of year when papers and final projects are being written. So here are a few pointers that we found interesting.

Writing for College

What college students have the most difficulty with (aside from math classes) is probably being required to write a college-level paper. In many classes, a significant part of your grade will be the term paper, and your professors will expect a certain level of quality that’s quite a bit higher than your high school teachers might have demanded. Regardless of what type of paper you’ll be writing, here are some tips for college writing to help you get the grade you desire.

Before You Start: Preparing to Write a College Paper

Depending on your writing style, you might be tempted to just sit down and start, but it’s helpful to take some time to prepare first. Figure out what topic you’ll be writing on and start your research (if applicable) as soon as possible; this way, if for some reason the topic doesn’t work out, you’ll have time to choose a new one.

If research is required, taking good research notes will make writing the paper much easier. Be sure to write down both the information you need and the source – including the author’s name, the title of the book or paper, and the page where you found that information; this makes it much easier on yourself if you need to go back and check things later on! Indeed, of all the tips for college writing, this is the one that can save you the most time; it’s extremely frustrating having to go back through all of your reading trying to find the original source of a quote!

Make sure you understand the assignment; you don’t want to put in a lot of effort, only to find that you misunderstood what you were supposed to be doing!

Writing the Paper

Avoid logical errors! If you’re writing an opinion or persuasive essay, you’ll be attempting to convince the reader of your position; don’t mess it up by committing a logical fallacy. You’ll generally be exposed to common fallacies in a freshman-level composition or speech class; some common ones are ad hominem (attacking the person rather than the argument), slippery slope (if we take the first step, all the rest are unavoidable), appeal to authority (just because famous person X says something, doesn’t mean it’s true, especially if X isn’t an expert in that area), ad populum (everyone believes this, so it must be true), begging the question (assuming what you’re trying to prove), and straw man (arguing against a different argument than the one that was actually made), but there are many more. It’s worth familiarizing yourself with false dichotomy, non sequitur, post-hoc ergo propter hoc, and tautology as well.

Avoid awkward sentences: read your essay out loud to see if it makes sense. If it sounds awkward when read aloud, you should probably revise it. It’s often easier to hear errors than it is to find them when reading silently.

Make sure your spelling and grammar is correct. Don’t rely on spell-check to find your errors! This lion eye no is rite; my spell Czech tolled me sew!

Editing Your Paper

It’s best to put your paper aside for a while after you finish writing (another reason to start early!) so that when you come back to it, it’s easier to read what you wrote rather than what you meant. Again, reading our loud is the best way to find errors yourself.

However, it’s even better to have someone else read the paper. Someone who doesn’t already know what you’re talking about will have a much easier time picking out the things that don’t make sense.

Referencing

One of the worst things you can do in academic writing is to plagiarize; not only can it result in a failing grade, you can also end up getting kicked out of school for egregious violations If you don’t understand how to quote reference material, you need to learn!

As a general rule, any time you put down an idea that is not your own and is not generally known, you need to tell the reader where the idea comes from. For example, you don’t need a citation for “the sky is blue” or “President Obama was elected in 2008″, but you’ll need one for “2008 was one of the three hottest years on record”.

When paraphrasing what someone else said, you don’t need to use quotation marks, but you still need to identify them as the source of the idea.

Final Thoughts

Of all the tips for college writing you could get, here’s the most important: do your own work! Passing off someone else’s words as your own, either through plagiarizing or hiring someone to write your paper is considered one of the most severe violations of academic ethics.

Start early, figure out what you want to say, and write a paper that clearly expresses your feelings. And one more college writing tip: use a printer; don’t write the essay by hand! You always want your work to look professional; sloppy appears makes people suspect sloppy work. If your printer is running out of ink, get more ink. If that’s not practical, use the printers in the computer lab on campus rather than turning in something with very light printing. In short: present your paper in the best light possible so that your instructor has nothing to detract from your work.

—————————————–

Canada’s business schools are among the world’s best, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

The magazine recently released its list of The Top 10 International Business Schools (made up of Canadian and European schools), with Canadian schools claiming 4 spots.

Queen’s University School of Business was ranked #2, while The University of Western Ontario Ivey School of Business was ranked #6. The University of Toronto Rotman School of Management was ranked #8, with York University Schulich School of Business coming in at #9.

The lists’ criteria took a number of factors into account. Each school was given a grade by students in their programs (assessing teaching and services), as well as by recruiters to reflect the quality of each school’s graduates. They also measured the potential employability of each school’s grads (based on the MBA graduates reporting at least one job offer within three months of graduation) and the starting saleries grads can expect.

The results were based on three surveys that 26,389 MBA grads completed, as well as three surveys that 680 recruiters completed.

France’s INSEAD was named #1, which pushed Queens from their top spot in 2008. Schulich’s ranking was their first appearance in the top 10.

Every year students flock to the college bookstore to purchase the various textbooks that they require for their classes. Little do these students realize that, in doing so, they are throwing good money away. As unbelievable as it may seem textbooks, in some cases, actually cost as much, if not more, than tuition.

On the surface the college bookstore may seem like a convenient source for textbooks. Titles are usually in-stock and students may purchase new textbooks or opt for the cheaper alternative of used books. In truth the money saved by purchasing used textbooks from the college bookstore is only a fraction of the amount that students could be saving if they shopped online.

More and more online booksellers have begun selling textbooks at a considerable discount off of the cover price. In fact, many major booksellers now have special areas of their web sites that are devoted to selling nothing but textbooks. Online used bookstores are another source for college books as they stock a large number of textbooks, which means sizable savings for students. There are also web-based retailers whose inventory is entirely devoted to college books.

Students should avoid purchasing their textbooks at the first store that they browse. Instead, they should investigate the alternatives offered by other online booksellers. Price isn’t the only factor to consider when making an online purchase. Students should also factor in shipping costs and delivery time when making their buying decision.

Online auctions are another option for students seeking a bargain. This option, however, has its pros and cons. A plus is that students can get incredible bargains when obtaining books via online auctions. One downside is that established retailers have channels in place to ensure that you receive your order within a reasonable amount of time. With an auction purchase, however, you are at the mercy of the auction seller’s timetable.

One way that students can really save is by obtaining books for free. Project Gutenberg is one resource that English majors will find invaluable. At this site students can peruse a vast collection of classics that have entered the public domain. In the past students seeking assistance with their studies had to pay for the privilege of that help by purchasing study guides. Today that is no longer the case. Cash-strapped students can now visit Spark Notes for free downloadable study guides as well as free downloadable classics.

Students who elect to buy online will no longer be able to resell their books to the college bookstore at the end of class, but that doesn’t mean that they are stuck with the textbooks. Many web sites that sell textbooks also offer students the option of selling their books to fellow bargain-seekers. This allows students to easily recouping a portion of their money.

Textbooks normally consume a major portion of a student’s budget, but that doesn’t have to be the case, because while the cost of tuition may be set in stone the price of textbooks isn’t. By taking the time to do a little research on the best textbook values available college students can save money now rather than acquiring debt to be paid back later.

Learn

the difference between shyness and introversion. “Introverts are apt to be quieter, which is often interpreted as shyness,” says Katharine Myers in Self-Promotion for Introverts: The Quiet Guide to Getting Ahead, by Nancy Ancowitz. “However, it may or may not be. Shyness has more to do with a lack of social skills. Introverts are more self-contained, which can seem shy.” Even so, introversion and shyness are related. Introverts are more likely to be shy than extroverts. You can be an outgoing introvert (like me!) – which means you’re fine to make small talk for a few hours, then you run out of gas.

Figure out

how introverted you are. Most college students have both introverted and extroverted personality traits. And, most students tend to be a little more one than the others…which is why taking a test for introverted personality traits is helpful! For instance, if you’re highly introverted, then you might want to focus on college activities and goals that allow you to be alone most of the time. Introverted college students prefer to focus on details; they avoid groups or energetic social situations.

Accept

your shyness and social anxiety. Many college students think they’re socially inept, weird, or antisocial – when they’re really just introverted! Introverts don’t always realize that they’re drained by groups of people and that they process their thoughts and feelings differently than extroverts. The more college students know about introverted personality traits – and the more comfortable they are with themselves – the easier it’ll be to overcome feelings of shyness and social anxiety.

Create

a realistic, healthy school schedule. Schedule “downtime” into your routine – time to be alone, to do what you love, and to re-energize (introverts are drained by groups of people). Balance your downtime with activities with other college students. Don’t become a hermit – that won’t help you overcome shyness and social anxiety! Rather, challenge yourself to do one or two healthy social activities a week. Learn how to make small talk for introverts (it’s a social skill that many introverts have to learn, and it helps them set and achieve their life goals like no other skill can).

Combine

your natural strengths with social interactions. Marcus Buckingham is a career coach who advises people not to focus on their weaknesses. Instead, college students have to figure out what their strengths are, and sharpen them even more. “It’s ironic that your strengths can be so easy to overlook, because they’re clamoring for your attention in the most basic way,” says Buckingham, who wrote Go Put Your Strengths to Work: 6 Powerful Steps to Achieve Outstanding Performance. “Using them makes you feel strong. All you have to do is teach yourself to pay attention. Try to be conscious of yourself and how you feel as you’re completing your day-to-day tasks.” College students, what are you good at? Can you combine your strengths with social activities? If you feel good about yourself in a social situation, it’ll be easier to overcome shyness and social anxiety.

As we continue to fight the war on terrorism, it is important to remember and teach about the wars in which so many Canadians died.

Let us never forget the price that was paid for our freedom.

Mid-term exam season can be stressful but you can survive it if you stay healthy, stay organized and keep your eye on the bigger picture.

Margot Bell, associate director of student development at the University of British Columbia, says good health habits go a long way to keeping you as stress-free as possible during mid-term season.

“You have to take care of your health. Sleep, eat, rest, relax and it’ll make you a better student overall. Health habits tend to shift because students start spending all their time trying to focus on their exams. It all just creates stress by putting you in that pressure-cooker,” Bell said.

Your study sessions will be more productive if you tally up how much time you have left, how many topics you need to sensibly cover and create a schedule that makes sense. Think divide-and-conquer instead of trying to leap headfirst into the endzone.

“Stress management and time management really go hand-in-hand. Set reasonable, manageable goals and divide the work into smaller tasks. Set a schedule that builds in rest time and study time,” Bell said.

Most importantly of all, don’t get caught up in negative thoughts – regardless of how you do on your mid-terms, you’ll be able to start fresh and try out good habits again with a look towards final exams.

“Being prepared in advance is ideal and it’s never too late to start implementing good strategies and habits. If you mess up, you can put what you’ve learned towards December anyways.

Stay positive and energized
Reed Hilton-Eddy, learning strategist at Ryerson University, says constant feelings of being tired can be a classic symptom of being stressed-out so don’t make it worse by constantly napping.

“Some forms of stress can make you lethargic and tired so in those cases a nap might not be the right idea. Do some exercise instead,” Hilton-Eddy said.

A positive outlook can make a huge difference in your stress levels so remember to think positive.

“Don’t say, ‘Don’t panic.’ Instead think, ‘I am calm, I am prepared, I am relaxed.’ You want to focus on the things you want to happen, not the things you don’t,” Hilton-Eddy said.

If you feel yourself feeling stressed, take deep, full breaths to get your blood going and send oxygen to your head. Avoid too much caffeine as it can actually raise your stress levels.

————————————————-
