The day I left I got on the airplane and went to turn on my ipod and it blipped.

Flatlined. Dead dead dead.

‘Goldie’ as I liked to call it had been in my care for over 4 years and had been dropped more times than I care to admit. She had been drenched in sweat during training, running and possibly dropped into a river in Vietnam. She served me well for those years but she suddenly bit the dust, permanently.

Unfortunately lil Goldie wasn’t covered by insurance and so I am now music-less.

Who can survive without music? Not me, that’s for sure.

I Wednesday Wish that I had a 7th Generation Ipod with 160GB of memory even though that’s more than my computer has.

I would give it a name and then fill it with my favorite tracks, photos, movies and whatever else I could find. I practically need a 7th generation Ipod with 160GB of memory. It’s definitely not excessive.

What’s your Wednesday Wish?

No, I’m not a skinny white girl, but I’m not obese, and I’m certainly not unfit or untoned. I have no major issues, and I’m happy to strip off at pretty much the drop of a hat in certain company.

I’m grateful for my strong legs and muscular arms that keep me moving and have carried me on many a force march back in my army days.

There are scars, stretch marks, moles, freckles and a funny patch of skin that’s the wrong colour. None of this concerns me because I figure its just part of who I am.

However, there is one thing that bothers me and it’s the same thing that bothers a lot of women. The dreaded C word.

Cellulite.

So I have decided to declare war on cellulite. Starting today, I’m going to treat my self better and self tan to within an inch of my life in order to get rid of the one thing that I’m paranoid about.

The causes and cures for cellulite vary widely according to the google search I conducted. But most consider it is a result of a combination of factors including toxins, diet, exercise and stress. Apparently there is something to suggest that tight underwear can cause it because it impedes the flow of lymphatic fluids. I don’t wear tight panties so no need to be concerned about that.

While most experts warn that you can’t do anything about cellulite, I think that’s a bunch of garbage. I have a plan to conquer cellulite.

Exercise

Walking 4-5 times per week, 45 mins.

I don’t believe that we should be out there punishing ourselves. Seriously. What is the point of exercising to the point of pain if you’re only going to give up after a week?

Being that I’ve been out of the military for a while, and was never an avid runner, I’m going to start with walking 4-5 times per week. I’m starting orienteering and there are parks near where I live. Eventually I’ll get back to jogging but there’s no running in my future.

Yoga 3-7 times per week

The second part of exercise is yoga, my new love. I do yoga daily to keep my back in good shape. I’m going to add a few moves designed to help shift excess pounds and boost metabolism for good measure.

Food

Abstain from Alcohol

While my significant other isn’t around to ply me with yummy red wine and Jack Daniels.

Green Tea & Water

Increasing water intake can only be a good thing. That’s what we were taught in basic so it must be true. It also helps with the elimination of toxins. Green Tea is some sort of wonder drink so I’ll give that a swing too, but only because I like it.

Sexiness

The bottom line for getting rid of cellulite is pretending you don’t have any. The rules of the universe say that if you want to get something you have to pretend you already have it. So I’m gonna pretend like I have a smooth derriere.

You can get away with a lot if you simply have the confidence to carry it off. Just look at lady gaga. She looks so ridiculous, no one notices her thighs.

So, this means lots of self care. A weekly sauna at the pool as well as regular body scrub and self tan. Finished off with sparkly moisturiser any cellulite left over will be camouflaged. All followed by flaunting my backside whenever I can.

Bring on the Summer! Viva la smooth thighs!

The perfect house wife of the 1950s is gone, and in her place stands the new generation of women ready to take on the world.
Don’t worry, you can still be a sexpot while holding your ground and maintaining your independence, but if you’re going to be a feminine force to be reckoned with, here are 10 essential life skills to get you through most sticky situations.

1.	Know how to change a tyre
The standard response after a breakdown is to call the male friend who can fix it. That’s exactly what I did the first time my car broke down! No one likes being dependant, so learn basic car maintenance with: Dare To Repair Your Car: A Do-It-Herself Guide to Maintenance, Safety, Minor Fix-Its, and Talking Shop.

2. Know how to cook a great meal – from scratch

Cooking a great meal for friends or loved ones is such a nice activity. Sadly we are using more and more packet ingredients. Learn how to cook from scratch using natural herbs and spices and you’ll be able to eat healthier, save the environment and impress with gorgeous home cooked meals. Try Jamie Olivers cook book for help getting started.

3. How to end a bad relationship

The problem with bad relationships is that we often stay too long. An independent woman will know how to recognise and deal with a bad relationship, without causing a path of destruction. Just because someone loves you, doesn’t mean you have to love them back. When a relationship turns sour, it’s better for both parties to end it. Learn to end a bad relationship in a mature way. If you keep getting into harmful relationships try seeking help to identify the behaviours you need to avoid so you can Break Bad Relationship Patterns for Good. The good thing about bad relationships is that they will teach you to recognise a good relationship when one comes your way.

4. Learn to make friends

Learning to make friends is something that isn’t taught to adults. As children we are socialised and make friends through our teenage years, but often don’t make new friends as adults. You can make friends by joining clubs, going out, going to parties and even online. Put yourself out there and you will meet people. From there, its learning how to maintain friendships over the long term. Recognise and acknowledge people who are good friends and be prepared to end bad friendships.

5. Be able to choose and use contraception

One of the best parts of being an adult in the 21st century is the ability to choose. We can choose who we sleep with, for what reason and if we want to have children or not. I don’t believe that any higher power wants us to pop out babies for every roll in the hay. You must be responsible for your body and what goes in and comes out of it! Learn to use protection, how to bring it up with a partner and what to do if they refuse. If you are in a committed relationship and have both been tested for STDs, consider different methods of contraception like the pill. But choose what works for you, not just what your partner wants. It is your right to look after your body in this respect.

6. Know how to look hot in 60 seconds or less

Self confidence is a life skill that is definitely learnt. The best part is that looking hot has absolutely nothing to do with how you actually look – its all in your presentation. Find what works for you – a slick of lipstick and mascara is usually enough to perk you up, and make you feel better about yourself instantly. Discover your mantra, stand up straight and believe that you are the hottest girl in the room. It really works!

7. How to do your own tax

Be in charge of your finances and your body and you rule your own world. You don’t have to sit down and personally go over every item, but don’t give up the responsibility of this to anyone in the world. That includes accountants. I never entrust my finances 100% to anyone else under any circumstances. If you do choose to have an accountant do your end of financial year equations, double check everything. A mistake that is made in your name rests on your shoulders and you have no one else to blame. You have been warned!

8. Be irresponsible

As we mature its easy to fall into a rut of always being responsible. Take time to let go! You don’t always have to be the strong, mature one. It’s healthy to let your hair down once in a while and be a kid again. If this means going on holiday and dancing half naked at mardi gras – what’s the worst that could happen? Learn to say ‘no’ to taking on too much responsibility. You don’t have to prove to the world how you are the most grown up anymore – your ID card says that for you. Be like a private soldier – only responsible to yourself.

9. How to give (and receive) compliments

I love compliments! Unfortunately giving and receiving praise is actually harder than it sounds. Have you ever giving someone a compliment only to have them shrug you off? Did it make you want to give them more compliments? Not likely! To give a good compliment think about something about your complimentee. What do you like the most about them? Simply commenting on their shoes is too generic, instead, say something about their sense of style. Make it real by using eye contact and saying it in public. To receive a compliment, just say “thank you”. Don’t immediately return their compliment. Just be grateful for a moment. I like to write compliments down in a diary, to be savoured at a later date. Its great for your self confidence on a bad day.

10. Be honest

That hardest life skill of all. There are entire television series’ made about adult’s inability to be honest (remember seinfeld?). I do believe that if you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all. But at the same time, if someone asks for your opinion that is no reason to stay quiet. Being honest with others involves being able to stand by your opinions, and not alter your ideas to suit those around you. You can learn to sugar coat an honest opinion. If someone asks you if you like their new skirt, don’t just blurt out “its hideous”, go with something more peaceful, like “it’s not my favorite” or “i prefer your other one”. You can even say “it’s not very flattering”, its a much nicer way of saying “your butt looks huge in that!”

When I made the first cut, it was done. There was no going back again.
Within minutes the sink was filled with chunks of black hair. And I started to feel… free.

We women seem to hold so much of our self esteem in our hair. We use it to flirt, to hide behind and to enhance our beauty.

As a child, I used to cry when my hair was cut. One of my earliest memories is of telling my mum that I wanted my hair to be so long that I could sit on it.

So not that i have barely an inch of hair on my head you could be excused for thinking that I might feel ugly, unnatractive or boyish. But I feel quite the opposite.

I honestly feel freed.

No more spending hundreds at the salon every 4-6 weeks. No more blow drying, straightening and stupidly expensive products.

And it hasn’t stopped men from flirting with me. I think its boosted my self confidence, there is no hair to get in the way of seeing the real me.

It’s all good, because I am not my hair.

While I’m not the type of girl who spends my days looking at fashion magazines, I do love art and all things artsy. I spent a great deal of my young adult life as a photographer and I consider myself to be an artist of sorts.

The hardest part was getting the attention that is needed for a young artist or writer. Getting published that first time is just impossible, especially if you’re young, or haven’t studied or have no contacts in the industry. Getting a professional portfolio together can be really tough.

I used to spend hours calling after articles and photographs that I had sent just to hear a ‘no’ or ‘you’re too young’ response.

That’s why the opportunity that culturemag is offering to young fashionista types is just too good to ignore.

They are looking for hairdressers, makeup artists, stylists a and photographers, If this is your area of expertise you might want to consider contributing to the culturemag. It’s a great way to get published, and they are accepting contributions.

If you’re the type of girl (or guy) who loves their fashion and clothes horse culture, then culturemag will be right up your alley. If you’re more like me an need some help in the fashion department then you can Join the Culture newsletter.

The thing I like most about culturemag is the online contributions. There is one particularly interesting article about the perceptions of beauty and body size. And its not just about the fashion that you see in cosmo, culturemag showcases everything from dreadlocks to designer wares. Well worth checking out.

Taylor “cougar bait” Lautner

I could literally wax lyrical all day about Taylor.
I saw Twilight a few days ago, and the only good part about the film is this stunning young man. He doesn’t look like the other actors in Hollywierd, he is dark and broody and makes me feel like a cougar about to strike.
It’s the eyes I think.
Or is it those abs?
All I know is, he’s less than half my age plus 7 which puts him firmly in the minors by my count. But I couldn’t ...
