SOLENN HEUSSAFF. Nali-link naman ngayon si Richard kay Solenn Heussaff, isa sa paboritong celebrity castaways ng Survivor Philippines.

Maraming nagsasabi na bagay sila. Wala ba siyang balak ligawan si Solenn?

"Kami naman ni Solenn, friends na kami noon pa. Best friend siya ni Mond [Raymond Gutierrez, his twin brother] kaya madalas kaming lumalabas na magkakasama," sabi niya.

Balitang isa si Solenn sa gusto ng fans na makatambal ni Richard sa Captain Barbell. Ano ang masasabi niya rito?

"Malalaman ko po 'yon bukas [September 23]," sabi niya. "Makikipag-meeting ako sa GMA. Idi-discuss na namin ang Captain Barbell.

"We need to start taping na sa last week of October or sa first week of November. Pero sa January 2011 pa 'yon ipapalabas kasi hanggang December pa ang Survivor Philippines.

"Baka pag-usapan na rin namin ang Valentine movie na gagawin ko. Gusto ko naman ay isang romantic comedy para lalabas sa sinehan na nakangiti ang mga manonood.

"Hindi ko pa rin alam kung kami pa rin ni Anne [Curtis] ang magtatambal. May mga options pa kasing iku-consider."

Walang duda na isa sa paboritong castaways sa Survivor Philippines Celebrity Showdown ang socialite model na si Solenn Heussaff. Sa ngayon, siya ang may pinakamaraming twits mula sa fans na sumusubaybay sa reality show ng GMA-7.

Tahimik, walang reklamo, at kinakaya raw kasi ni Solenn ang lahat ng ipinapagawang challenges sa kanila.

In-expect ba niyang magiging ganoon ang paghanga sa kanya ng publiko?

"No, I did not expect. But I'm thankful," nakangiting sabi ni Solenn nang makausap siya ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) sa 17th floor ng GMA Network Center kahapon, September 22.

Walang scheduled presscon si Solenn kahapon. Dumaan lang sila ng kanyang best friend na si Raymond Gutierrez sa pocket presscon ng kakambal ng huli na si Richard Gutierrez para sa docu-series nitong Anatomy of A Disaster. Kaibigan din kasi ni Solenn si Richard, na host din ng Survivor Philippines Celebrity Showdown.

Pero nang hilingin na ma-interview siya ng press ay hindi naman tumanggi si Solenn.

FAVORITE CASTAWAY. Ano ang masasabi niya sa ibang castaways na mas pasosyal pa ang dating kaysa sa kanya?

"I don't complain about anything dahil hindi ako ganoon pinalaki ng parents ko, kaya I want to thank my parents. Basta ginagawa ko lang kung anong sabihin sa amin ni Richard," sabi niya.

Walang nakuhang information ang PEP kay Solenn kung ano pa ang mangyayari sa Survivor Philippines. Bawal daw kasi silang magsalita dahil kasama ito sa pinirmahan nilang kontrata for the show.

"Puwede lang kaming magsalita kung naipalabas na," sabi niya. "Like, 'yong naawa talaga kami kay Aki [Akihiro Sato] kasi paborito siyang kagatin ng lamok. Allergic pa naman siya sa kagat ng lamok."

Kuwento pa niya, "Nag-lose ako ng five kilos while we were on the island. Before I joined the reality show, I ate rice only once a month. Pero doon, I ate rice every day. Ang sarap naman ng rice nila doon.

"I ate anything, except oyster. I don't like oysters."

Kung mayroon pa ulit celebrity edition ang Survivor Philippines, sasali ba siya ulit?

"After bumalik kami rito from the island, they asked me if I will still join the reality show, if there's another one. Sabi ko, 'I don't like na.' But now that you ask me, I want to try it again," sagot ni Solenn

JOINING SHOWBIZ. Tuluyan nang pinasok ni Solenn ang showbiz. Bagamat mas gusto raw niyang kumanta, gusto rin niyang subukan ang pag-arte.

May balita nga na isa siya sa posibleng maging leading lady ni Richard sa Captain Barbell. Tatanggapin ba niya ito kung sakali?

"Hindi ako mahusay sa acting, but I can try," sagot niya.

"I can't speak straight Tagalog, Taglish lang. That's why I'm taking Tagalog lessons now."

Natawa siya nang sabihing puwede namang deaf-mute ang role niya if ever makuha nga siya sa show.

Pinayuhan din siya ng press na lagi siyang magsalita ng Tagalog para ma-practice siya nang husto. Ganoon nga raw ang ginagawa sa kanya ni Richard kapag magkasama sila. Tagalog daw sila kung mag-usap.

Si Raymond, hindi ba siya tinuturuan nito?

"No, he taught me bad words!" nagtatawang sabi ni Solenn.

BEING LINKED TO RICHARD. Aware ba si Solenn na nali-link siya ngayon kay Richard?

"I don't know why we are being linked to each other, baka dahil we're closer now," sabi niya.

"Si Raymond talaga ang best friend ko. We always hang out at lagi na rin naming kasama ngayon si Richard, that's why we're becoming close.

"Magkasama kami lagi ngayon sa gym. He's preparing for his role in Captain Barbell and I'm back with my exercises."

Totoo bang binawalan siya ng kaibigan niyang si Georgina Wilson, na huwag siyang magpaligaw kay Richard? Si Georgina ay ex-girlfriend ng matinee idol.

"No, wala naman ganoong sinabi si Georgina sa akin. Sabi lang niya, huwag akong maging serious. She's happy now with Borgy [Manotoc, Georgina's boyfriend].

"But I don't ride on issues. I don't want to use people. I don't want to preempt the future. Maybe may ibang babae na gusto si Richard."

Hindi sumagot si Solenn nang sabihin sa kanyang single na ulit si Richard ngayon.

Pero bakit madalas siyang pumupunta sa bahay nina Richard?

"Kahit noon pa naman, madalas na akong pumunta sa bahay nila because they are all my friends. I also help Ruffa [Gutierrez, Richard's sister] on her makeup," paliwanag niya.

Kahit ang nanay at manager ni Richard na si Annabelle Rama ay sinasabing gusto siya para sa anak nito. Nanghinayang din daw si Annabelle na hindi siya ang naging manager ni Solenn.

Ano ang reaksiyon dito ni Solenn?

"Yes, because I'm normal!" birong sagot niya.

Ang manager ni Solenn ay si Leo Dominguez, na siya ring manager nina Ogie Alcasid at Lovi Poe.

"I really want to sing, that's why I got Leo as my manager," sabi niya.

Lalong naiintriga sina Richard Gutierrez at Solenn Heusaff dahil lagi silang magkasama.
Kahapon sa mini-presscon ng environmental docu-series ni Richard na Anatomy of a Disaster, nandu’n si Solenn na kausap si Raymond Gutierrez.
Nandun daw siya dahil may meeting sila ni Raymond pero ang ending, naging presscon na nina Richard at Solenn.
Hindi nila itinatanggi na lalo silang naging close pero bilang magkaibigan lang daw dahil madalas silang magkasamang lumabas.
Pumupunta si Solenn sa bahay nina Richard at ganundin ang huli dahil magkabarkada sila.
Hindi raw sila apektado sa mga ganu’ng intriga dahil talagang magkaibigan lang daw sila.
“Even before pa kami umalis for Survivor, lagi kaming magkasama ni Solenn. Medyo nama-magnify lang ngayon dahil sa Survivor,” paliwanag ni Richard.

“For now I really want to stay single and concentrate on my work and I’ll set my lovelife aside for now.”
“Tingnan natin,” sagot lang ni Richard sa tanong namin kung posibleng ma-develop ang magandang friendship nila.
Si Solenn ay natatawa na lang sa mga ganung
intriga pero deretso raw siyang sumagot at hindi raw siya marunong makipag-eklayan.
Deretso ang sagot niyang magkaibigan lang sila ni Richard at walang espesyal na relasyong namumuo sa kanila.
“Oo. We’re getting closer,” sagot ni Solenn tungkol sa friendship nila ni Richard.
Hindi raw naapektuhan ang pagkakaibigan nila dahil sa mga intrigang iyun, basta tuloy lang daw sila sa paglalabas.
Inamin din ni Richard na hindi ganu’n kadali sa kanya ang pag-move on sa break-up nila ni Jewel Mische.

Samantala, seryoso si Richard sa kanyang advocacy sa environment kaya ngayong wala pa siyang araw-araw na taping, pinagkaabalahan niya ang ilang activities na may kinalaman sa pangangalaga sa ating kalikasan.

Kung may silent players man sa Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Showdown, malamang ay isa na rito si Solenn Heussaff. Tumatak na sa mga tao ang kanyang motto during the game na “trust no one." Kaya naman isa rin siya sa pinaka-intriguing na castaways this season.

Sa unang tingin marahil ay hindi aakalain ng mga manonood na magtatagal sa Survivor ang isang Solenn Heussaff na sikat na model, entrepreneur, at socialite. As a matter of fact, she was also given the title “Ang Diwata ng Isla" sa show na ito.

But Solenn proved lahat ng impressions sa kanya to be wrong dahil hanggang ngayon ay isa siya sa mga natitirang castaways sa isla.

Ano naman ang expectations niya before joining Survivor?

“I knew it would be hard, so I tried to prepare myself mentally more than physically. But I didn’t prepare myself well enough kasi it was harder than I thought. I thought maybe I’d want to quit but I’m here," masayang sagot ng dalaga.

Ngayon ay painit nang painit ang laban dahil nagsisimula nang magkaroon ng alliances kahit sa loob mismo ng isang tribo. Solenn belongs to the tribe Magan na pinamumunuan ni Buhawi Meneses. Ngunit lately ay nagkakaroon na siya ng kasunduan kina Mico Aytona at Elma Muros-Posadas. Sino ba ang kanyang maitututuring na pinaka-close sa isla?

“I would have to say there were a few - five or six. Pero I like Buhawi [Meneses] a lot. We’re really close. Tapos si Mico [Aytona], we got a long well. Akihiro [Sato], almost all the girls, and then [Pretty] Trisza. Everyone!" pahayag niya.

Naging open rin si Solenn sa kanyang motto during the game that she trusted no one, “I’ve been betrayed, but I know it’s part of the game so no hard feelings." Ngunit kumusta naman kaya sila ng mga co-castaways niya after ng Survivor? Naiilang pa rin ba siya sa mga castaways who betrayed her?

“We’re all friends. We all know it’s a game," pagpapaliwanag ni Solenn, “I’m sure some people are not a hundred percent honest now. They’re pretending lang. But on my side, I don’t have any hard feelings on anyone and I’m happy they’re part of the experience."

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A DESIGNER?

I've always loved fashion and both my grandmothers were seamstresses and I've always been into the arts so I decided to just go for it.

HOW DID YOU START AS A DESIGNER?

After studying at Le Studio Berçot de Paris, I interned with a wedding gown designer in Paris named Fanny Liautard. But I was missing home so decided to come back for a short vacation. I wasn't sure yet what I was going to do. Then I called Lulu Tan-Gan and asked if I could intern with her for 2 months, and she decided to hire me. ;-)

WHERE DID YOU RECEIVE YOUR FASHION TRAINING?

Le Studio Berçot de Paris, a small school in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. They teach everything the "old school" way, so everything you do is very hands-on. I had to learn how to do felt, knit, crochet, paint on clothes, etc.

WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY?

Comfy and classy but not classic.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION?

From everything around me, books, objects and the interesting people I encounter.

WHICH DESIGNERS/ARTISTS DO YOU ADMIRE MOST?

I think everyone has their own way of seeing fashion and art, but not everyone can have the same taste. So I'll never say I can truly hate a certain brand or whatnot. But the designers who are more my style and whom I have high respect for are Viktor & Rolf (for their construction), Alexander McQueen (he was just a genius), Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs.

WHO DO YOU THINK IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF TIMELESS STYLE?

Coco Chanel.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A DESIGNER?

To renew yourself all the time and make sure you please as many people as possible. Sometimes you have to design more for others than yourself. For example, some of my designs don't suit my personal style but I know they will suit others so I do it for them.

WHICH ASPECT OF THE DESIGN PROCESS DO YOU ENJOY MOST?

Sketching and draping are my two most favorite. But hand-sewing is very calming as well.

WHAT'S THE BEST CLOTHING ITEM/ACCESSORY WOMEN/MEN SHOULD HAVE?

Everyone should own a statement piece so that whenever you are wearing something simple you can bring it to life.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GARMENT OR FASHION ACCESSORY?

Bangles.

ANY CURRENT TRENDS THAT YOU'RE FOND OF? ANY CURRENT OBSESSIONS?

I like the wedge heel. I've bought 3 pairs this month. Haha!

HOW HAVE YOU EVOLVED AS A DESIGNER?

I evolve everyday and will have to do so for the next years in my life. You can never stop learning. I'm definitely more mature in the thought process of my designs because I've been learning new things and incorporating it into my work. I can only get better and work harder for it.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR CAREER?

I'm proud of everything I do because I put all my soul into it but I don't think I've worked in the industry long enough to properly answer this question.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST COMPLIMENT YOU HAVE RECEIVED ABOUT YOUR WORK?

There are a lot of people on Twitter that send me compliments about how I'm so inspiring to them and that they love my work ethic and want to grow up to be like me. I get so excited and happy and touched and overwhelmed and can't believe it every time!

ASPIRATIONS FOR THE BRAND IN THE FUTURE?

I would like to develop more products and expand into other materials (still keeping knit the dominant one) and go for export. ;-)

HOW DO YOU UNWIND?

I go to the gym everyday with a trainer and go pole dancing at times. Still have to master that though haha!

FAVORITE SHOPPING AND TRAVEL DESTINATIONS?

Shopping would have to be Thailand and Hong Kong. I always love going to Paris to enjoy the fashion as well as the food!

WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO? FILMS YOU WATCH? BOOKS YOU READ?

I love old school hip-hop, it makes me feel alive! I also love anything that's acoustic for my more relaxed days.
I'm in the movie theater almost every week. I love watching movies especially action and drama ones. Yup, the two opposites! Haha.
I haven't read many books only because I tend to fall asleep every four pages. I try, though, but it always happens. I'm learning, though!

OTHER PASTIMES, PASSIONS, INTERESTS ASIDE FROM FASHION?

I love to paint. I have been doing it since I was at a young age. I'm planning my own exhibit soon and will be doing portraits of controversial personalities in the Philippines.

WHAT OTHER TALENT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE?

I'd love to know how to play the guitar.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE PHILIPPINE FASHION INDUSTRY NEEDS MOST IN ORDER TO FLOURISH?

Nicer selection in materials. We have the talent, and we have the crafts. We just need a little extra push.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING DESIGNERS?

Always go for what you want and don't let anyone put you down—but accept and embrace criticism. There's really no secret to being successful; as long as you have dedication and you work hard, you can get anything you desire.

Hershas always been a face that’s hard to miss — that arresting gaze that greets you from the magazine cover to the allure she exudes from countless TV commercials that will have you buying something you don’t really need. Drive along EDSA and you’ll see that she has already won the battle of the billboards. Her image casually leaning on a motorcycle could very well be a safety hazard, distracting motorists doing double takes.
It seems that these days, Solenn Heussaff is simply inescapable. And the beauty of it, all of these are with not much effort on her part. She is the ultimate “it” girl without even trying.
She enters the restaurant for this shoot with such a carefree attitude, smiling and greeting the staff without the usual self-absorbed vibe that most beautiful people give off.

One person wondered out loud, “Does she even know how pretty she is?” I’m pretty sure she’s well aware that she’s no Ugly Betty, but what sets her apart is the fact that she doesn’t rely on her beauty alone. Solenn is a master of many things. Having studied makeup in Paris, she is responsible for beautifying countless celebrities for ads and fashion shoots. Her artistic ways are also to blame for the controversial Rogue cover of model Joey Mead with nothing but body paint on. The half-French knockout flexes her creative muscles even further by designing for retail giant Tan-Gan, and on those rare days when she has free time, she de-stresses by creating vivid images through painting. As if that’s not enough, she can also carry a tune and has recently caught the attention of movers and shakers in the entertainment scene.
After two reschedules, we finally caught up with the busy beauty for this interview. Read up as she gets candid on those showbiz rumors and why guys reading this should consider getting a buzz cut.

YOUNG STAR: You’re the poster girl of beauty powered with talent; there must be one weird thing about you. Care to share?
SOLENN HEUSSAFF: I like going in front of the mirror and practicing different voices like Linda Blair in The Exorcist, and Marvin the Martian.
Would you rather have a bowl of sinigang or French onion soup?
I can eat sinigang every day. I love the sourness of it. And onion soup makes you fart! (laughs)
Who’s your girl crush?
Internationally it would be Lindsay Lohan. Locally, Iza Calzado.
If you could choose only one profession between makeup artist, designer and model, which one would you choose and why?
If I had to choose it would probably be designing, just because it’s an avenue to showcase my creative vision, and I just love fashion.
Heard through the grapevine that you’ll be in the showbiz spotlight soon, any truth?
Semi-true but I don’t want to hype things up just in case things don’t go the way I planned. I don’t want to jinx anything as of now. There are also fears — I’m scared of the gossip that I know comes with it.
If you could live anywhere in the world, which place would you call home?
Tahiti. I’m an island girl at heart. I’ve already been there and it’s a French community. Plus the men are hot!
What’s the most painful thing love has taught you?
No matter how much you love a person, never give 100 percent of yourself because people always tend to disappoint.
What’s your idea of happiness?
To be content with myself and to be happy with what I’m doing.
What would you consider your biggest mistake?
Leaving my life in Paris for a guy.
Have any interesting dreams lately?
Justin Timberlake invited me back to Sofitel after his concert.
What’s the worst thing a guy can do on a first date?
Talk about the future.
What’s the best thing a guy can do upon meeting you?
Treat me with respect and making me laugh.

Branded as one of Manila's newest “It Girls,“ Solenn has got her hands in almost everything in any stylista's to-do list. After studying design in France for three years and spending another two learning about make up artistry and prosthetics, this half-Filipina, half-French beauty came back home to land an internship with noted designer Lulu Tan Gan. Two weeks later, she was hired.

Aside from designing and doing make-up on the side, she has also dabbled into modeling -- something she considers a hobby despite doing it on and off since the age of 14, ever since an agent came up to her at a mall.

It's been written before, that there's more to her than her pretty face. But this 24-year-old does not live her life as to how others define it.

“I'm really nonchalant, I really don't know what's going on around me,“ she says self-effacingly with nary a trace of arrogance. But perhaps it is true, Solenn seems more driven to self-expression than paying attention to what people say about her.

“Yeah, it could be the French side,“ she laughs when asked.

Even her newfound “It Girl“ image is something she takes in stride. “I'm okay with that,“ she says readily, but quickly adds, “I hate when they call me a socialite... because I'm really far from being that.“

An “It Girl“ is traditionally defined as “a charming sexy woman who receives intense media coverage unrelated or disproportional to personal achievements.“ But it is immediately clear that while Solenn is ripe for some sort of a media tag, she busts that theory wide open. For one, the Philipppine Tatler bestowed that title upon her, along with Georgina Wilson and Stephanie Kienle, in its March 2010 fashion issue not as an elitist tag but as a celebration of the young women's accomplishments.

Also, in this power trio of twentysomething achievers, Solenn is in good company considering British-Filipina Georgina is a popular model and VJ and Swiss-Filipina Stephanie is a businesswoman and artist.

“It depends on how you understand `It Girl,' Solenn. For me, I'm happy when someone tells me you're an `It Girl' because you're young and you're doing so many things for yourself, you're successful. In that way I'm ok. But I don't know how some people understand it. But it seems really boring; I'd rather be an inspiration or something. I don't know about the `it' thing...“

But even in privileged circles, a title like that comes with its own brand of misconception.

“I know some people insult me, but I don't care,“ she says. Although admitting no one really has insulted her to her face, she shares that she's gotten that kind of response on Twitter. It's hardly the bone-crushing, scandal-stirring experiences that have befallen her ilk, but this just proves that prejudice spares no one.

“All my girlfriends are all really beautiful--I mean, inside and out-so people tend to think we're fake to each other or superficial... But we're all the `It Girls' in our group, apparently,“ she shares matter-offactly. But even when talking about beautiful friends and this kind of circle that immediately sends warning signals to those who do not belong, there's nothing about Solenn that merits antagonistic behavior.

“The thing is, a lot of people have come up to me thinking I'm very snobby,“ she admits. “But I'm very shy... and so I just don't smile `cause I get nervous or whatever. But I'm very, very, approachable. I'm actually the most approachable of all my friends.“

“I just look like a snob,“ she smiles, saying that there have been people who have approached her and were almost surprised that she's actually “nice.“

The good and the bad of it Solenn's celebrity status has not really been of the ubiquitous variety.

She doesn't put herself out there just for attention. Like some celebrities, sure she tweets, but tries to stay away from self-obsessed shout-outs.

No one is sick of seeing her, not even when, at one point, Rogue's own style editor, L.A. Consing Lopez, has been lightly accused of “starting a religion“ due to his praised-filled blog entries about the girl their editorial staff reportedly calls their “muse.“ The accusation, of course, was mild teasing given that the magazine's readers obviously like Solenn just as much.

Solenn's recent incarnation, aside from still being one of Penshoppe's celebrity endorsers, is as a semiregular fixture, or a “party jock“ if you will, on GMA's Party Pilipinas.

This new try is her “experimenting,“ she says. “I wouldn't say no to anyone,“ nor to opportunities, that is.

But not everything comes easy for this charmed one. “When I did Party Pilipinas, I was so nervous. It was live. And I'm not a good host, first of all, and I'm amongst all those people that are used to doing it.“

With most people, such opportunities don't come that often, but Solenn is just lucky that way.
Even then, she still insists on keeping to her own limits. “The thing is, like for acting, I've been offered... I know for a fact that I'm a very bad actress.

I would not want to do something I'm not good at. And I know, because I just laugh at myself when I see myself. Even in commercials, they always give me roles where I don’t have to talk… And when I went to Party Pilipinas I had to host and I kind of messed up,” she says point blank.

But if being an extrovert on camera is a little hard for her, Solenn’s other form of self-expression is perhaps more powerful than any of her self-confessed “messed up” appearances on television.

Perhaps only known to people in her circle, Solenn is a great visual artist.

“I love everything to do with the arts… I paint,” she shares. Coming from a family of architects, painters and artists (her mom was a Bayanihan dancer), Solenn has great affinity for the medium and her work is both impressive and stirring—if a little surprising. And while her involvement with “art” is something that might be easy to dismiss or criticize for others, her work reveals a depth to Solenn that hints at darker leanings underneath that polished, stylish exterior.

“If I paint on my own, it will end up being very morbid,” she says in an untitled video for pelicola.tv. There, Solenn shares she started painting at the age of three, when she got turned on to it by her Spanish kindergarten teacher, who’s also a painter. Although she says she never stopped taking classes ‘til she’s 21, she also insists that she does it to relax—noting that she’s not in it professionally. At least not yet.

When not creating her own imagery, “I copy painters that I like, like Gauguin, Dali…” she says in the clip, which shows some of her striking work. And perhaps it is something people might want to look up online, especially since a lot of her paintings are no longer with her.

“I’m very artistic, but business minded, not at all,” she laughs. “I tend to create and give away… so I would never be able to have my own business unless I have someone above me (to pull the reins). It’s like, ‘Oh you like it… okay here.’ It makes me happy to know that someone likes what I do so I end up giving them away."

There's definitely a lot more to Solenn Heussaff than just a pretty face. This cover girl has downshifted her modeling and decided to focus on more artistic endeavors. And there are many. In one short work week she wears different hats. Twice a week she is a designer for the homegrown knit wear label Lulu Tan Gan; otherwise, she’s doing make up projects for Make Up For Ever Paris. And, in whatever free time is available, she dabbles at her own little pet projects, like shoe design, the first collection of which the public will see very soon.

The half-French Solenn has been exposed to the arts since the age of three. Spending a lot of her time in culture-rich European countries, most notably Paris, has influenced her much. But more than that, creativity is really just in her blood, as practically everyone on her father’s side of the family is a painter and on her mother’s side, all are sculptors. This year she has taken her love of art and applied it to another medium: make up.

Earlier this year Solenn took a six-month course at the Fleurimont School in Paris, where she took up basic beauty and fashion make up. After finishing, she pursued further studies at the Make Up For Ever Academy, informally known as the Harvard of make up in the industry. Solenn will be going back to Paris to take up Prosthetics at the Academy.

“I like being creative and having no restrictions, beauty make up will always just be beauty make up,” she explains. “When you get into artistic make up you are free to do anything you want. You can bring imaginary characters to life. It really is like painting on a canvas, although it is more difficult since a canvas is flat, and working with a human canvas has obviously more dimension. You have to work with volumes.”

This course will prepare Solenn for her upcoming role as the instructor for the Artistic course in Maquillage Professionnel, the new make up academy under Make Up For Ever Philippines located in a studio behind the Make Up For Ever Boutique in Bonifacio High St. Here, she teaches alongside Make Up For Ever Philippines’ creative director, the Paris-trained Bobby Carlos. As the instructor for the Artistic course, she hopes to raise the bar in make up for the Philippines: to help Filipinas/Filipinos who are passionate about make up become global players.

“I want my students to understand the difference between make up as an aesthetic everyday indulgence and make up as an art that can be mastered as a professional,” she concludes. “I would like the students to expand their views on make up and be free of the rules of beauty. Solenn Heusaff. The name doesn’t ring bells among the masa just yet but in the “sosyal” and showbiz circles it is synonymous to Derek Ramsay. I mean, everytime people talk about Derek’s colorful (not many people know how much it is!) love life, currently with girlfriend Angelica Panganiban (the two are in South Africa for the World Cup, Derek being a soccer fan and player), the name Solenn Heusaff always crops up.

“Yes, I’m the one,” confirmed Solenn to movie writers over lunch yesterday at Via Mare (Tomas Morato).

She’s half-French and half-Filipina, a cover girl, a supermodel (who graces those huge Penshoppe billboards along EDSA) and now a singer who will take a bow in this Sunday’s edition of the GMA noontime show Party Pilipinas. She’s a stunning beauty (5’6” tall) — “Pang Bb. Pilipinas,” observed Lolit Solis.

In contrast to Angelica who can be cold when around press people, casting them with a suspicious eye and seldom smiling, Solenn is warm and friendly and a delightful conversationalist, instantly lovable. She could have been the perfect partner for Derek who, like Solenn, comes from almost the same socio-economic-cultural background, both of them having spent several years abroad (he in England and she in Paris).

“It was Derek who broke up with me,” admitted Solenn who added that she and Derek went steady for four years, three years of which they spent as long-distance lovers while she was pursuing a degree in Fashion Designing in Paris and Derek was home busy with sports and commercial/fashion modeling which became his launching pad to showbiz.

Asked if she’s possessive, Solenn said no. Neither is she the jealous type, and that makes her the exact opposite of Angelica who sometimes irritates Derek when she gets jealous even of Derek’s fans, once exchanging harsh words (curses?) with some of them in the Internet. Derek is well-mannered, very proper, and he, like Solenn, easily connects to people even those he’s meeting for the first time. He’s not snooty unlike most of those who come from “sosyal” backgrounds.

Has Angelica anything to do with her and Derek’s break-up?

“No,” Solenn said. “I think she came into the picture after our break-up.”

Maybe their having been apart for three years made them outgrow each other. In showbiz as in romance, absence doesn’t make the heart grow fonder; it makes the heart wander.

Up to now, Solenn has maintained a good, friendly relationship with Derek and his family (especially his mom) with whom Solenn said she’s very close to, closer in fact than Angelica is.

Asked if she still feels for Derek, the brutally-frank Solenn shrugged, “No more,” gesturing that he’s totally out of her heart that now beats for somebody else, “although not in a ‘committed’ way, just dating.” The last time she saw Derek was before he and Angelica flew to South Africa.

Yes, she has met Angelica (by chance) and they made beso-beso. A “plastic” gesture? “Not really,” said Solenn, “We were very polite to each other.”

It was Leo V. Dominguez who introduced Solenn to the press. Solenn is the newest addition to Leo’s growing stable of talents (including Ogie Alcasid, Lovi Poe, Emilio Garcia and Chris Cayzer) under his own LVD Management Consultancy and Services.

“It was Rey (Lañada, LVD handler) who discovered Solenn’s singing talent.”

“I saw Solenn at Georgina Wilson’s birthday bash,” recalled Rey. “She was singing. I wondered, ‘Is it really Solenn singing?’”

Now that she has one foot in showbiz, will Solenn go deeper into it and try acting?

“I’m not a good actress,” she said.

Told that she can learn on the job, she reconsidered. “Why not?”

If she did, it would be a good idea to cast her together with Derek and Angelica in a soap, with Solenn as the bida and Angelica as the kontrabida (after all, she’s good in playing anti-heroine roles such as in her current ABS-CBN soap Rubi).

Somebody asked Solenn about the possibility of her and Derek getting back together again if ever Derek and Angelica broke up.

“No,” was Solenn’s quick answer, shaking her pretty head. “We are better off as friends.”
