Redesigned Solinst TLC Meter Now Reaches 1000 Feet (300m)

The Solinst TLC Meter has been redesigned to provide the option of longer tape lengths. Static water level and depth of readings are read off the new, extremely durable, Solinst PVDF flat tape, which is precisely laser marked every 1/100 ft or millimeter, and now available to 1000 ft (300 m).

The TLC Meter accurately measures temperature and conductivity that has been standardized to 25°C, i.e. Specific Conductance (displayed as EC), in wells and open water; these measurements are displayed on a convenient rotating LCD display that is easy to read. TLC Meter is ideal for profiling temperature and conductivity for saltwater intrusion studies, and for a general indication of contamination levels.

Solinst Launches NEW Model 101 P7 Water Level Meter

Solinst is proud to announce the release of the NEW Model 101 P7 Water Level Meter. It features the recently developed Solinst laser marked flat tape, and a submersible probe.

The new flat tape is made of non-stretch PVDF with accurate laser markings every 1/100 ft. or each millimeter, certified traceable to National Standards. The thick dog bone design reduces adherence to the sides of well casing; it also has increased tensile strength, abrasion resistance and electrical efficiency. The tape splice option is maintained for quick repairs in the field.

The new P7 Probe is engineered to allow submersion to 1000 ft. (300 m), making it ideal for depth to water, as well as total well depth measurements. The sensor near the tip of the probe provides consistent depth to water measurements with almost zero displacement.

These features make the Solinst Model 101 P7 our most accurate and durable Water Level Meter ever. For more on the new Model 101 P7, as well as our Standard Model 101 P2 Water Level Meter, visit: http://www.solinst.com/Prod/101/water-level-meter.html

Solinst Symposium a Forum for Learning and Sharing

The 2011 Solinst Symposium proved to be another great forum for attendees and presenters to share their experiences and discuss ongoing work and research. The event ran from October 27 to 28 at the Solinst Georgetown facility, and centered on "Enhanced Monitoring and Remedial Methods for Contaminated Groundwater". This year's speakers came from Universities across Canada and the United States, and included environmental practitioners from remediation and consulting firms.

A prominent theme throughout the Symposium, which was also highlighted in the past two Solinst Symposiums, was the need for high-resolution subsurface data. With case studies and experimental results, the presenters supported the idea that in order to properly characterize, remediate, and assess a contaminated site, there needs to be multiple lines of evidence and an abundance of data. The talks highlighted tools and techniques that can help gain this data, and studies that helped characterize contaminants and assessed the effectiveness of different remediation strategies.

Isolate & Sample up to 7 Zones in One Borehole

CMT Multilevel Systems isolate and monitor up to seven discrete zones in one borehole; monitor 7 zones in the 1.7" (43 mm) System; 3 in the narrow 1.1" (28 mm) System. Both options are low cost. The single tube design makes them fast and easy to drill and install in one day. System flexibility allows port locations and monitoring strategy to be finalized right on site. CMT wells are ideal for shallow applications to 150 ft (50 m). Depth discrete groundwater and soil gas data provides more detailed site characterizations, enabling increased confidence in decision-making.

Use a Levelogger for Artesian Monitoring

Monitoring artesian conditions using Solinst Leveloggers can be quite straightforward. An artesian well can be defined as one in which water is under pressure and flows to the surface naturally. To monitor water level fluctuations in an artesian well the Levelogger Gold can be installed right on the top of a sealed wellhead.

Solinst offers a special nylon compression fitting with a pressure chamber for this purpose. First, a 1/4" NPT hole is tapped into the sealed wellhead. The Levelogger is installed in the compression fitting. Then the compression fitting is simply threaded onto the wellhead using the using a 1/4" NPT connection on the pressure chamber. The Levelogger sensor measures water level fluctuations inside the pressure chamber. Users can communicate with the Levelogger using Leveloader data transfer device or laptop in the field, without removing it from the sealed wellhead.

For more information, visit: http://www.solinst.com/Prod/3001/Levelogger-NPT-Adapter.html

Symposium Sold Out!

There was an overwhelming, common theme throughout the Symposium this year: Obtain high quality water level and underground chemistry data, store it in a database, and make it available to all those who need it.

The work being done at the Region of Waterloo, the Oak Ridges Moraine and through the Ontario Ministry of Environment, all came back to the importance of organizing and sharing sub-surface data. The need for high resolution data was further emphasized during Beth Parker's talk, highlighting the value of continued research, furthering technology and our understanding of what is happening beneath the earth's surface.

During the final presentation of the Symposium, attendees (consultants, regulators, and researchers) were thoroughly intrigued when Guy Patrick described the new Guidance Document for British Columbia. The response was immensely positive and it is clear that BC is setting the bar to increase the level of competency and accountability for groundwater monitoring and remediation applications. This is a real step forward for the entire industry and really drove the point home that high quality data not only needs to be captured and shared, but also analyzed and utilized to ensure public safety. Guy's talk brought the event full-circle. It emphasized the message that Dick Jackson began the Symposium with – the need for more complete and accurate site investigations to ensure the best and proper outcome at a contaminated site.

Shallow Well Installation and Monitoring Solutions

Solinst Drive-Point Piezometers are excellent permanent or temporary wells used to monitor shallow groundwater, soil and gas up to 25 ft below surface. These well points are ideal for initial site investigations, for long or short-term applications, and can also be used for profiling. Installation using a Manual Slide Hammer, with tubing bypass and the correct drive-point for your application, can save you both time and money.

The piezometer tip and screen are stainless steel, and a barbed fitting allows a sample tube to be attached to obtain high quality samples. Where an airtight connection is most desirable, a compression fitting option is available. The 615 N, designed without a tubing barb, is to be used for water level measurements. To ensure that the screen does not clog or smear, shielded versions are available for sites with high silt or clay content.

All components combined create a complete shallow groundwater monitoring well solution that is highly portable and affordable.

CMT Simplifies Vapor Intrusion Monitoring

Vapor intrusion is the movement of volatile chemicals from the subsurface into the indoor air of overlying buildings. Chemicals such as BTEX and TCE produce vapors that can pose short-term safety concerns such as explosions; chemicals such as benzene and vinyl chloride are toxic when inhaled. Therefore, monitoring for vapors such as these is very necessary.

The Solinst CMT Multilevel System is ideal for vapor intrusion monitoring for up to 7 discrete sampling zones in one borehole. A special wellhead is used to sample contaminant vapor concentrations. It allows attachment of a three-way valve to direct vapor to a pressure gauge connected at one end and a sample vessel at the other.

Leveloggers Still Work in Freezing Conditions

The operating temperature in water for the Levelogger is between -20° to 80°C (-4° to 180°F), so to avoid transducer damage, the easiest method is to lower the transducer below the frost line or ice formation depth. In shallow streams, wetlands or ponds where freezing may penetrate to the bottom, install the Levelogger in a vented stilling well imbedded into the bottom of the water body beyond the frost line.

If not possible, place the Levelogger inside two thin, elongated silicon, rubber or latex balloons filled with a non-toxic, non-corrosive anti-freeze or saltwater solution. Place the balloons and logger in a section of perforated 1.25" (30 mm) ID pipe in the monitored water. The antifreeze solution will protect the Levelogger from ice expansion at the pressure transducer, yet transmit any pressure and temperature fluctuations that occur. Always use caution, as the Levelogger can only withstand up to 150% of its stated depth fluctuation range.

Click here to view a case study where this method was successfully used.

Solinst Launches Newly Redesigned Website

Solinst is proud to introduce its newest version of Solinst.com. Our web team has been hard at work developing the new web site, which offers much faster download times, easier user navigation, more accurate internal search capabilities and a brand new user interface.

At its core, the main user navigation remains intact, so there is no need to re-learn where things are on Solinst.com - they are where you expect them to be. To access information on our full product line, you still click on the Products tab on the main navigation bar, which will take you to http://www.solinst.com/Prod/Prod.html

Included on every page of the site is a link to our RSS Feed, which can be subscribed to on our News page, (http://www.solinst.com/news.html) and is updated on a regular basis.

The Home Page (http://www.solinst.com) interface is completely different, with the introduction of a new navigation bar that takes the user directly to our product lines pages (ie. Dataloggers and Telemetry http://www.solinst.com/Prod/Lines/Data_Loggers.html).

Take a look around, let us know what you think and watch for more updates.

September 18th is World Water Monitoring Day!

September 18th is World Water Monitoring Day!

World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) is an international program run in coordination by the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and International Water Association (IWA), with the aim of promoting public involvement in protecting the world's water resources.

Schools, clubs, organizations, etc. are encouraged to use Test Kits available through WWMD to sample and test their local water bodies for basic water quality parameters, including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and turbidity. Results, stories and reports are shared on the organizations website at: www.worldwatermonitoringday.org

The official day of celebration is September 18th. A large event involving various supporting organizations and local schools in Washington, D.C. is being headed by WEF and IWA, but participants all over the world are asked to hold their own water monitoring day - any day up until December 31, 2009. Data from these monitoring events has been accepted since March 22, 2009 (World Water Day).

To learn more, visit the website at: www.worldwatermonitoringday.org

Vapor Monitoring with Solinst Equipment

Solinst is best known for our high quality groundwater monitoring instrumentation, but we do also offer instruments that can be used for vapor and soil gas monitoring.

The CMT Multilevel System allows vapor sampling from up to 7 discrete zones in one borehole. The tubing can be fitted with a special wellhead used to sample contaminant vapor concentrations in the unsaturated or vadose zone above the water table.

The Model 615 Drive-Point Piezometer is designed as an affordable method to measure shallow groundwater and soil vapor conditions. A tubing barb allows the attachment of polyethylene or Teflon tubing for high quality sampling, using a Peristaltic Pump (or other).

The Solinst Model 410 Peristaltic Pump uses rotating rollers to depress silicon tubing, creating a vacuum, which displaces any fluid or gas in the chosen direction. It is ideal for vapor sampling, effective up to the suction lift limit (can be up to 33 ft or 10 m).

Solinst Leveloggers Simplify Your Pumping Tests

Solinst automated water level dataloggers have the tools to make your pumping tests easy. Levelogger PC Software enables your Levelogger Gold dataloggers to be programmed with a sampling schedule that best matches your pumping rates and test duration; so you can customize your sampling schedule to record water level readings before, during and after the pumping test (baseline, pumping and recovery), each interval with a unique rate.

The PC Software also allows you to view real-time readings. If you deploy your Levelogger on a Direct Read Cable, readings can be viewed and saved on a field laptop as you are conducting the tests. A Leveloader Gold data transfer device also allows you to view real-time readings during your pumping test. Levelogger recordings are easy to compensate for barometric effects if you use an on-site Barologger to record barometric pressure during your tests. The compensation wizard in the Levelogger PC Software computes true net water level data, with just a few clicks of your mouse!

No-Purge Sampling with the Solinst Model 425

The Discrete Interval Sampler from Solinst is a no-purge instrument that allows groundwater sampling from a specific depth, with minimal disturbance, and without mixing of water from different levels or points of inflow in a well. The stainless steel sampler is pressurized before being lowered to prevent water from entering until the desired zone is reached.

No-purge, also known as zero-purge or passive sampling methods, have gained acceptance by many regulatory agencies for obtaining representative groundwater samples. These sampling methods are based on the principle that groundwater which flows through a screen and into a well, maintains equilibrium with the adjacent water bearing unit. Sampling at the screened interval should result in representative samples, without the need for purging.

When compared to conventional groundwater sampling methods, no-purge samplers typically require less costs and time to retrieve a sample. Minimal labor is required as there is no purge water to manage or dispose of. Normally, no-purge samplers do not require power, a compressor or control unit, and there is little or no well water agitation when the samplers are deployed and operated.

Solinst Emitter gets Positive Response at Battelle

Battelle held their Tenth International In Situ and On-Site Bioremediation Symposium from May 5-8 in Baltimore, Maryland. The Symposium featured 420 platform and poster sessions, as well as an exhibit hall with 56 companies displaying bioremediation related services and instruments. It was another successful show for Solinst. There was a large amount of interest in the Waterloo Emitter™, with comments that it is a great, low cost bioremediation option.

The Waterloo Emitter is a simple device designed to enhance the in situ bioremediation of contaminated groundwater, through direct, controlled, diffusion of oxygen or other amendments into an aquifer. The patented technology consists of a PVC frame wrapped with tubing that can be pressurized to obtain the desired flow of gas, depending on site-specific needs. They are conveniently sized for 2, 4 and 6" (50, 100 and 150 mm) wells.
Newly Certified CMT Installers Put Training to Good Use

Last week, CMT training was conducted for eight employees of a drilling company in Tennessee. The training at M & W Drilling in Oak Ridge, TN, consisted of an overview of the different multilevel systems offered by Solinst and then a hands-on demonstration session where the trainees learned how to properly construct a CMT well. After all of the trainees had been given the opportunity to construct a CMT monitoring port, additional questions and specific scenarios were addressed prior to concluding the training session. As newly certified CMT Installers, the drillers put their training to good use - they left the following day to begin the installation of eight 3-Channel CMT Systems!

A Simple and Dependable Way to Deploy Your Levelogger

Solinst now offers Kevlar® Rope Assemblies as an option to deploy your Leveloggers. For applications requiring a little extra strength and durability, Kevlar is five times stronger than steel - it is a spun material with great tensile strength. Kevlar is also very suitable for underwater applications in freshwater and marine environments, as the material resists rusting. It is excellent in all temperatures.
There are no hooks required to attach the rope to the Levelogger. Simply tie the Kevlar to the opening in the end cap, and the other end to a wellhead or any suitable anchor. Solinst still offers stainless steel wire lines for deployment, as well as Direct Read Cables for down-well communication.

Technical Bulletin: Best Practice Low Flow Methods for Highest Quality Samples

Since 1996, low flow sampling has become an increasingly approved method for obtaining high quality groundwater samples. Through the work of Puls and Barcelona, the US EPA released standard operating procedures for low flow sampling (EPA/540/S-95/504). Following such guidelines ensures the collection of samples that are representative of actual in-situ conditions.
Low flow purging and sampling involves extracting groundwater at rates comparable to ambient groundwater flow (typically less than 500 ml/min), so that the drawdown of the water level is minimized, and the mixing of stagnant water with water from the screened intake area in a well is reduced.

Why Use Bladder Pumps?

We all know that bladder pumps are ideal for obtaining extremely accurate, representative groundwater samples. For these reasons site regulators, owners, and consultants rely on bladder pumps for reproducible data that is defensible, time and time again.
Bladder pumps are EPA approved for low flow sampling and groundwater collection for Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) analysis. Despite their benefits, misconceptions sometimes deter potential users from upgrading to a bladder pump. Perceived complexity of equipment and operation are misplaced on these highly portable, and easy to control instruments.
Solinst Integra Bladder Pumps provide options to suit various environments and applications. They are effective and easy to operate. With a few simple sampling tips and the right pump controller, these pumps will provide you with time and cost savings, along with defensible, consistent data.

A Simple Tool for Metals Sampling in Groundwater

The Solinst Model 601 Standpipe Piezometers are low cost, simple, yet reliable tools, which can be used for various groundwater monitoring and sampling applications.
The Model 601 is excellent for metals sampling, as it is composed of a preformed Vyon tube set inside a perforated PVC piezometer tip. The porous Vyon filter has an average pore size of 60 microns, and keeps out silts and fine sands. It is also well suited for water level monitoring, permeability measurements, construction control, de-watering drainage operations, and slope stability investigations.
The Standpipes are designed to be placed within a drilled hole to provide a filtered inlet point. The pointed PVC tip is also suitable for pushing into very loose sands at the base of a borehole, a stream, or into very loose tailings pond sediments. Available in various lengths, the 601 tip connects to the surface with 3/4" ID PVC riser pipe using slip-fit couplings. Reducer couplings can also be used to connect to other sizes of riser pipe or casing.

Solinst Model 103 Tag Line - more versatile than you might think!

Originally, the Tag Line was designed for use during the construction of monitoring wells, to measure the depth of a well or to tag a backfill layer of sand or bentonite. It also became an ideal tool to use when installing a Solinst CMT Multilevel System and isolating monitoring ports at the perfect depths.
The Solinst Tag Line uses a weight clipped to a polyethylene coated, permanently marked, stainless steel cable. The low-profile markings are bonded every foot or meter. They are fixed firmly in place, while maintaining a smooth surface for trouble-free operation. The cable is mounted on a sturdy and easy-to-use reel.
Because the weight is easily clipped off, the Tag Line can be used to deploy a number of different instruments, and because the cable is marked, you can ensure you are getting your instruments to the proper depth. This is excellent for Bailer deployment. The Solinst Model 428 Disposable Bailer, Model 429 Point Source Bailer, and the Model 425 Discrete Interval Sampler, all have a convenient connector to securely attach a Tag line.
Tag Lines can also be used to install Packers, are great safety supports for downhole Bladder Pumps or Double Valve Pumps, and can even be used to deploy your Levelogger for short-term applications. The Solinst Tag Line has been proven to be a very versatile tool!

North American Distributor Training Highlights Solinst Bladder Pump Technology

On March 6th and 7th, training sessions were offered to Solinst North American Distributors. Eleven representatives from seven different companies were welcomed, with attendees from Texas to Quebec. Product updates and an overview of all Solinst instruments were provided during the two-day event.
Training featured informative hands-on demonstrations, including a presentation showcasing the efficiency of Solinst Integra Bladder Pumps and the Pump Control Unit. The Solinst Control Unit allows very slow compression of the bladder. This causes less disturbance to the sample water, providing higher quality samples than other competitor units.
Thank you to the participants, and to the staff who made this training session another successful and interesting Solinst event. A great time was had by all!

20 More Certified CMT Installers!

Thanks to the good folks at Boart, Solinst Canada made its 4th visit to be a part of Boart Longyear's Sonic Driller Training Program in Marietta, OH. Solinst was invited to provide training and certification for CMT System Installation to all twenty attendees in this year's class. And what a class it was - Boart had representation from across 12 States, as well as from Toulon, France! The course discussed the background and theory of the advantages and disadvantages of bundled, nested, and engineered multilevel systems. Both Waterloo and CMT manufactured multilevel systems were discussed and reviewed for site application and suitability.
The training focused on CMT installation practices, everything from layout, port cutting and construction, selecting centralizers and ensuring proper placement of sand packs and seals. A review of level measurement and sampling options for both soil gas and groundwater was also discussed. The class had a chance to construct their own monitoring ports, with hands-on training, it's one of the best ways to 'learn, and remember'.
Solinst has now trained and certified a total of 117 installers from around the world. Please see our CMT Certified Installers list to find one near you!

North American Environmental Field Conference - Exhibit and Workshop a Success!

The Nielson Environmental Field School held its annual North American Environmental Field Conference and Exposition, January 14-16, 2008 in Tampa, Florida. Once again, this always busy and very informative event was a great success. It featured 38 excellent papers, almost 50 different exhibitors, and over 80 hours of interactive indoor and outdoor workshops and equipment demonstrations. Solinst had the pleasure of exhibiting at the conference, as well as presenting an indoor workshop discussing water level monitoring telemetry systems. A lot of positive feedback was gained through the workshop and exhibit, and we are already looking forward to next year's event!

NEW Leveloader Gold - Rugged Data Transfer Device

NEW rugged Leveloader Gold is a field ready, water resistant handheld built for the new Levelogger Gold! New Real Time View feature is ideal for viewing live water level and temperature data at pump tests. The Leveloader Gold uses the new popular Levelogger Settings File Integration. This allows you to setup Levelogger sampling schedules at the office and upload them to the Leveloader Gold, which can hold up to 10 preset files at a time. This saves setup time and ensures that site wide investigations are using similar sampling schedules if required. These files can be changed and replaced at any time and can be distributed by email to field technicians. The increased memory capacity, longer battery life (uses 9V alkaline or lithium), larger LCD screen, and ergonomic design all make the new Leveloader Gold a more attractive and usable field device than our previous models. Connections for USB, RS232, optical and direct read interface cables.
