Times have changed over the last 10 years.

Those retailers that cannot cope with the changes are mistaken in believing that clients must see a diamond in person before making an informed purchase. Can You Purchase a Diamond Without First Seeing it?

Yes you can, and when you do, there is a good savings opportunity. The appearance of a non-fancy colour, and in most cases, a non-fancy cut diamond is not subjective. There is hard science behind selecting a diamond that will be lively and filled with fire without seeing it in person.

How is this accomplished?

An example: BlueNile’s billion dollar business model is based on purchasing stones without seeing them. Here at Solitaire, for many years we too have not stocked up on diamonds, yet we are able to create premium custom diamond jewellery for our clients. The added value, of course, of visiting our studio is that you are directly communicating with our diamond experts. More on that below.

First off, the diamond must come with a reputable lab report from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This is critical because the grading provides precise measurements, or the science, behind the appearance of a diamond:

Such things as table percentage, total depth percentage, star facet length, crown and pavilion measurements, overweight percentage and length-width ratio, among others, provides a clear understanding of how light interacts with the facets of the diamond
This translates into how brilliant the stone is, and the degree of brightness, scintillation, fire, and light and dark patterns which resonates from the diamond
The report also itemizes the clarity, colour, cut and carat weight of the stone. These factors combined with the science, as well as the polish and symmetry, will allow a diamond expert (trained and certified by the GIA), to confidently select the perfect stone without the need of seeing it first

Secondly, to add confidence to the selection process, Solitaire always works with a network of trusted diamond suppliers that allows for communication to ask questions, and receiving a picture or video of the stone under daylight.

Next, the experience and training of the diamond expert at Solitaire is invaluable. The expert has seen countless stones of all shapes and sizes over the years, and has accumulated industry knowledge that far surpasses the mainstream information found on the internet. Finally, some facts on fancy-cut and fancy-coloured stones, and fluorescence:

An internationally accepted system for visually evaluating the appearance of fancy-cut diamonds (like princess cuts, cushion cut and emerald cut) does not exist. The GIA will grade these diamonds but does not offer a final grade on the cut. The length-width ratio becomes subjective (some people prefer a more squarish versus rectangular shape, or a modified brilliant cut versus traditional brilliant cut, or a larger table versus a smaller one); however, a diamond expert can show you examples and provide insight into industry preferences
Fancy-coloured diamonds are graded by the GIA and offer all the measurements etc. However, the darkness and hues of the fancy colour becomes a preference. In this case, the diamond expert will again provide the client with examples and insight into industry preferences. The lab report will provide further details on the colour because it becomes an important element on the fancy-coloured diamond’s rarity and price
Fluorescence is the visible light some diamonds emit under UV rays (like sunlight). The GIA report will state if a diamond has any fluorescence, and the strength and colour of it. Studies show that majority of diamonds with a strong fluorescence do not have a widely noticeable effect on appearance. In fact, I and J colour diamonds may benefit from it, while colourless diamonds may exhibit haziness. The bon a fide diamond supplier will communicate any of these effects on the diamond

What Is, and Why Do, Some Jewellery Stores List Total Carat Weight (or Carat TW)?

It’s a simple marketing ploy to arouse interest in buyers searching for an engagement ring. By stating ‘1 carat tw diamond engagement ring’ and placing a price next to it, your eyes see a 1 carat engagement ring for a seemingly attractive price.

But what you need to understand first is what the carat weight of the centre stone is on its own. Unfortunately, most retailers don’t itemize the details (and you have to know to ask). This is misleading to say the least, and can affect the price greatly.

In other words, you could be looking at an engagement ring with a 0.50 carat centre stone, and 0.50 carats worth of smaller diamonds (say on the shoulders or on the halo). The simple math: the total carat weight is 1 carat (0.50ct centre + 0.50ct small diamonds).

At Solitaire, we promote transparency and never make a sales pitch. We itemize the carat of the centre stone, along with the total carats of the smaller stones. If you are searching for a 1 carat centre diamond then we will provide options for a one carat centre stone. Then we can discuss the carat weight of the smaller stones. It is just more honest and logical. Any other way we believe would be ambiguous.

The industry seems to focus too much on tricky sales techniques as opposed to concentrating on the art, craftsmanship and meaning that is fine jewellery. Then again, if every jeweller understood this then Solitaire, as a premium custom design studio, wouldn't add that much value. We define custom jewellery.

There is Too Much Information on Diamonds

The consequence? You are reading through forums, websites and blogs that:

Use improper terminology as they relate to diamonds
Insinuate quoting standards where at best, it is a preference
Overload you with information that is likely not relevant to you
Incorrectly explain the science and math pertaining to diamonds
Contain emotional statements instead of factual ones

On the positive side, it proves that people are genuinely interested in learning about this precious stone.

The point is that too much information is not excellent information.

Recommendations:

Visit the GIA to start your research on the 4C’s (www.GIA.edu)
Understand that the 4C’s is a language backed by a standard put in place by the GIA
An internationally accepted system for visually evaluating the appearance of fancy-cut diamonds (i.e. princess, cushion, etc) does not exist at this time
Establish a relationship with a jewellery house that has been in business for two or three decades, and be careful of receiving advice from a sales agent at the mall
The diamond expert will have received at least the full diamond grading course by the GIA
The diamond industry has changed for the better because you can compare prices against reputable online diamond dealers like Bluenile, which carry GIA graded diamonds
You don’t have to see an actual diamond to purchase it. The experienced diamond expert will explain the science and math to you, as well as industry preferences. Along with your diamond requirements, this formulates into a solid base to select your perfect precious stone
Remember, you likely want a diamond that is ‘alive’ – brightness and fire. And which does not have visible inclusions or blemishes to the unaided eye. Some details about a diamond you may not notice (like a table percentage that is 65% and not 62%, or an F colour vs a E colour)
Educate yourself on marketing efforts, like brand names, patented cuts, and things like ‘hearts and arrows’ (will you notice them once set in the ring?)
Polish is much more critical than symmetry because it can impact the appearance of the stone

1. Multiculturalism

· New York City in the late 70s used to have an underground scene where all walks of life – black, white, gay or straight – would come together and dance and celebrate diversity in harmony. Imagine this atmosphere, and beyond tripping the light fantastic, experienced ubiquitously in the city of Toronto. Our metropolitan has achieved diversity.

2. Underground PATH route

· Toronto’s underground pedestrian walkway is a marvel because without it, the city would be missing its weatherproof comfort, food and shopping outlets, and the omnitude that makes the city unique. I can buy a cup of coffee at Front Street and still be sipping on a warm brew exiting the Eaton Centre.

3. Healthy living

· Just run a search on gyms accessible downtown and you will see map markers so tightly packed together you will surely wonder why you still have a couple of pounds to shed. Being active and eating the right foods are platitudes representing the truth, and our city has a myriad of sidewalks, pathways, cycling routes, health-conscious shops and hasheries, and sport clubs to douse your healthy appetite.

4. Creativity and fashion scene

· Like every prestigious city, Toronto has a Fashion District that has expanded from Queen Street West to include Dundas Street West. Organizations like Toronto Fashion Incubator, and the fashion program at Ryerson (and its largest student run production in the world, Mass Exodus), support and nurture Canadian fashion designers and entrepreneurs. The expansion also revitalizes buildings and land, and strengthens relationships with the community.

6. Health care and research

· Healthcare is one of the fastest-growing economic sectors globally, and Toronto has one of the largest medical and biotech hubs in North America. Aptly named the Discovery District, this downtown cluster of hospitals and research institutes is impressive, and allows for Toronto’s universities and research hospitals to partnerships with each other and with world-class firms. Outside of this concentration, you will still find expanding hospitals and research entities.

7. Restaurants and shopping

· All work and no play…eat or shop with bells on. There is no conceivable shortage of places to dine or to shop at. It seems every neighbourhood (and neighbourhoods en route to formation) in the downtown vicinity are fruitful in their offerings of things to eat and buy. Small-businesses flourish as their surroundings pullulate. Established markets like the St. Lawrence Market and Kensington Market are accompanied by pop-up farmers markets around the city, like the one at Riverdale, David Pecaut Square, The Junction or Trinity Bellwoods. If shopping for clothes is in your immediate future, the options are ample.

8. Transportation

· Yes, subways and streetcars in the city are decent. Yes, driving around downtown is not horrible. And yes, walking and cycling in Toronto is pretty walkable and, umm… cycleable. But the future greatness of Toronto’s transportation is yet to be realized. We argue that the city is safe and secure, and offers a reliable system of travelling from place to place. There’s even an island airport, plans to expand transportation to Pearson International Airport, and the revitalization of Union Station. Yet, the city requires further planning, and depends upon community and political alignment to develop a larger, more efficient and environmentally-conscious network of public transportation, streets, and pathways.

9. Neighbourhoods

· If you read any number of reports and rankings on cities, you’ll find commentary on how Toronto residents feel a strong sense of belonging to their local community. From districts to villages, parks and other stomping grounds, people of all backgrounds will find their own sanctuary. The character of a Toronto community is shaped by its real estate, schools, transportation, recreation, history and lifestyle conveniences.

10. Room to grow

· Downtown neighbourhoods continue to grow, including West Don Lands, Adelaide West, Corktown, Yorkville, and Harbourfront. The same goes for current and future aggrandizement of office space. Yet, it seems like the city is still far from feeling like Manhattan. Maybe that’s a good thing. However, population growth is set to continue, and so is the city’s network of people movers. Also, the political landscape, we feel, will continuously require re-thinking and adapting to cultivate and promote culture and diversity, attract new talent, investments and business, and to advocate a long-term and sustainable vision for Toronto.

11. Centre of business

· Avoiding technical analysis, because professional rankings and reports cover it well, Toronto is essentially recognized as a favourable place to conduct business. Low business tax, construction, job opportunities, a strong banking sector, safety, the increase in students graduating, and ample office space are positive factors for the city’s economic vitality. In our opinion, a focus on value-added services and creation of business hubs are essential considerations, too.

12. Clean

· After visiting Tokyo, it is hard to find a cleaner city. But Toronto sets a high standard considering it is the fourth-largest city in North America. Even after city-wide events, the aftermath isn’t bad thanks to the City of Toronto and volunteers. Notability, Toronto’s clean beaches, maintained parks, and air quality is considered world-class.

13. Music, film and art

· Ask a visitor to the city what Toronto is known for and it is not uncommon to receive a reply that states: “TIFF”. The film festival has been around for a while and has garnered attention globally. The city is rife with museums, galleries, collections, graffiti art, government archives, artist-run exhibitions, libraries, and festivals that contribute to Toronto’s vibrant cultural life. Our metropolitan is home to three professional orchestras, Canada’s largest opera company, the oldest active live-electronic performing group on the planet, many performing art theatres, a jazz festival, an Entertainment District, and a wide-array of non-stadium venues (plus a couple of stadium venues, too). The city has produced and continues to produce diverse talent in music, film, and art.

14. The city of love

· Our big city can get a bad rap for not being a loving one, but it is the energy and excitement, the hustle and bustle if you will, that are the ingredients for formulating a big city. But we feel that overall, Toronto is indeed positive. People and communities are friendly, helpful and respectful – generally. Whether you agree or not, the things that requires attention are high stress, child poverty, and unaffordable housing. With this perspective, the small things in our big city life are just that – small. Some things you can do year-round is give to your local charities, sustain a political voice, and help a stranger with a smile.

15. Harbourfront

· The Harbourfront neighbourhood is special because of its character, and potential. You can read all about it on Wikipedia. For the city, the area all the way past the Humber Bay Arch Bridge is beautiful, and deserves long-term attention.

16. Nightlife

· In closing, a great city is not without a great nightlife. King Street West offers Restaurant Row, and a cluster of nightclubs, pubs, and lounges. There are numerous hotels around the city, theatres, and decent concerts at Yonge-Dundas Square. But if you want something more (particularly since the demise of one of the busiest club districts in North America), you may look to Kensington Market, kick it at house or condo party, barhop on Queen Street West, rent a bicycle and ride around the city, visit the Wallace footbridge in the Junction to witness the sunset, chill at Church-Wellesley Village, and live the best view of the city at Riverdale Park on Broadview Avenue.

A recent study conducted on 3,000 US adults suggests that divorce rates are lower on couple that spend more on their engagement ring and less on their wedding.

“Overall, our findings provide little evidence to support to the validity of the wedding industry’s general message that connects expensive weddings with positive material outcomes,” according to the study.

Quite possibly the most exacting part of presenting your engagement ring is getting your loved one’s ring size on the button.

Easier said than done. Over the years, we have had the pleasure of hearing, and thinking, of ways people just like you have discovered to work pretty well.

However, even if the size is not accurate, our clients a complimentary ring size adjustment on most custom-made orders. This includes one size up or down at no charge, and your ring is returned back to you the same day or next.

Number One: Ask your partners closest friend. Probably the surest way of capturing an accurate size.

Number Two: If your partner wears a ring already on the ring finger, trace the inside of that ring on paper. Generally, the right and left ring fingers are similar in size.

Number Three: Shopping is fun. Choose an evening and visit a high-end jewellery boutique. Have your partner try on a ring or two, and ensure the jeweller takes a measurement.

Number Four: Attempt to bring it up in conversation without giving away the surprise. We have heard of clients come up with clever ways, including touching palms together and making clever observations and comments.

Did you know that virtually all famous gemstones around the world are protected by a platinum setting? The reason is because platinum is one of the most durable and densest precious metals.

Not surprisingly, our clients at Solitaire overwhelmingly prefer platinum. They also understand the importance of design and quality that is achieved with custom-made jewellery.

This precious metal is usually 90% pure, as opposed to gold, which is 75% pure (18 karat). Platinum is hypoallergenic, and as it is worn the surface of platinum becomes harder and more resistant to wear. A unique quality is that when scratched, the metal is merely displaced (the metal can be moved back into place with professional polishing).

This online survey sampled a nationally representative group of women who were in a serious relationship and would consider getting engaged in the next 12 months. The women ranged in age from 25-34 and had an annual household income of over $55k.

There are two kinds of clients, and in both cases they understand the quality and value of custom-made, and are in the market for an engagement ring. The first type has a generous allowance, and the second has a conservative allocation of funds. Of course, this is all relative to what you consider generous or conservative. But for the purposes of outlining a helpful strategy, we will keep the definitions of generous and conservative neutral.

Don’t over spend. You deserve quality not just in the ring but in the quality of the education and service. This comes with integrity of the design studio. A good understanding of the stone, lab report, materials and after-sales commitment are important to your purchasing decision

Why it’s Important: Our Focus on Custom Jewellery

The jewellery industry is generally recognized for its vertical integration – manufactures who directly retail, wholesalers who setup retail operations, and retailers who both manufacture and wholesale.

Owning part or all of the supply chain is logical for a large corporation because it can achieve economies of scale. But small players, in our opinion, attempt integration to slightly widen the slice of their revenue pie.

The question is if this is a good thing – both for the business and their clients? For small players we would say maybe, but probably not. Technology plays an important role in the effect that vertical integration has on efficiency. But for smaller businesses, not enough technology exists to produce desirable efficiency. Also, not enough manpower, distribution channels or market share is available to realize the benefits of integration.

In other words, many jewellers claim that they can do many things, but it does not mean that they are leaders in any one thing. This is an issue, we think.
