New Firmware (4.0.2.A.0.62) for Live with Walkman

A firmware update has been deployed for the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman last night (at least for the Philippines).

The new firmware is 4.0.2.A.0.62. I updated mine last night and did not notice much change from 4.0.2.A.0.58. Looks like this update is merely for bug fixes and memory management improvements. I also read from xda that this has the new drivers for the Adreno 205 GPU.

Caution: This firmware cannot be Rooted if you are on a lock bootloader as of the moment. Feel free to come back for the latest news about rooting this firmware version.

Following Sony Ericsson's confirmation about upgrading their Xperia 2011 portfolio*, they have announced today the projected dates we are all been waiting for!

Rooting your Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™ the Easy way

With the written approval from DooMLoRD of xda-developers, I would like to share with you an easy way to root your Xperia Live with Walkman™ leaving your Bootloader unharmed!

Why do you want to Root your Android device?

This article highlighted some of the advantages of having a rooted device.

What you need:

*DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit (v3, with newest zergRush binary (16 Nov 2011) and newer superuser files)

*Your Phone drivers (better if you have installed PC Companion on your computer before you begin)

Let's begin!

The script below pretty much says what you will get after using the toolkit and what you need to do before you begin. Good luck!

[*] This script will:

(1) root ur device using latest zergRush exploit (16 Nov)

(2) install Busybox (1.18.4)

(3) install SU files (binary: 3.0.3 and apk: 3.0.6)

[*] Before u begin:

(1) make sure u have installed adb drivers for ur device

(2) enable "USB DEBUGGING"

from (Menu\Settings\Applications\Development)

(3) enable "UNKNOWN SOURCES"

from (Menu\Settings\Applications)

(4) [OPTIONAL] increase screen timeout to 10 minutes

(5) connect USB cable to PHONE and then connect to PC

Extract the file you downloaded from the original post using winzip/winrar/7zip in your computer
Go to the folder where you extracted the file and execute "RUNME.bat"
Read and follow the instructions on the screen!

I can confirm this works for Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™ (WT19i)!

Been idle for some time now and I can't really wait to get my hands on skinning again! I would like to work on creating themes for my new toy this time - SonyEricsson J10i2 Elm™. First on the list is SoloRazr Orb™!

Got my new toy for Christmas - an Sony Ericsson Elm™!

This phone is not something you can judge just by the way it looks. The Elm is part of Sony Ericsson's Green Heart™ campaign to promote a greener Earth. This is very obvious with the phone's packaging and built. Elm benefits the environment and help reduce CO2 emissions through:

Motorola FLIPOUT with MOTOBLUR Announced

Motorola has recently announced its new toy - yes, this square-shaped mobile phone equipped with Android 2.1! Apart from it's strange square form factor and swivel design, the FLIPOUT sports major enhancements to MOTOBLUR. This baby is said to be available sometime this quarter. Out of the box, this Android phone features a 2.8″ QVGA display, 3 MP camera, and 512MB internal memory (a lot less compared to the old ROKR E8). It also has Wi-Fi and 7.2Mbps HSDPA to help you stay connected and GPS for your travel and navigation needs.

Samsung GT-S5233W Star WiFi [Review]

There is absolutely no doubt about me being a Motorola fan (and I am proud of it). Fair enough, I decided to give myself a chance and take on another brand. After almost a month and a half, I got myself a new toy - a Samsung Star WiFi.

And here are some of my findings:

The Form

Obviously a candy bar with 7 physical buttons. The first 3 keys are situated in the front of the device and provide basic functions. The center key serves as your "back" button, the one in the left is your "dial" or "call" button, and the right key is your "end" or "drop" button. Last but not the least, is the Speaker on the upper part of the screen. Easy enough?

Now on the left side of the unit, you will see the "up" and "down" buttons. Here, the multi-connector slot (for your stereo headset and charger) is also located. Turn your phone right side and you will see the Lock and Camera buttons.

At the back of your phone is where you can find the 3.15 Mega Pixel Camera. Overall, the phone is solid and the engraved design at the back provides a descent grip.

The Home Screen

I am fond of changing my wallpaper a lot and this baby gave me two more home screens to dress up! Yes, Star WiFi has 3 separate Home Screens. The images below show how my current screens look like.

You can have different wallpapers on these screens which is cool, at least for me (I will show you how on the next post). Each Screen can hold different widgets depending on your needs. Thanks to Samsung's TouchWiz GUI, you can drag and drop widgets to your home screen or place them back to the widget sidebar anytime. The display can be hard to see under strong light conditions though.

Your 3 dedicated touch keys are also accessible from the home screens:

Keypad - Well, guess what this is for.
Phonebook - Do I need to say more?
Menu - Verrry obvious, I must say!

To complete your homescreen, you have the notification area for signal strength, battery level, new messages etc. as standard.

The Main Menu

S5233W Menu is very simple. It only took me 10 minutes to locate all items which I consider important. Another tab is available which is basically Shortcuts. One fallback though, there is no option to add or even re-arrange menu items. O.o

Key Features

Let us now focus on the key features, shall we?

Accelerometer Sensor - like the good old iPhone, Star WiFi automatically rotates the display depending on its orientation. This allows for a wider view especially when browsing the Net, taking/viewing photos/videos. Sad part is, not all screens and menus are supported.

Handwriting recognition - No need to worry, it has handwriting recognition. In fact, you have 3 options: Full Handwriting, Handwriting 1, and Handwriting 2. (check your manual for more details, lol)
Smart unlock - This will let you unlock your screen by writing a specified character. It also has application support which means you can unlock the screen and launch certain application at the same time. There is again a fallback - I find this useless when you can press and hold the lock/unlock button (on the side) any time!
Smile Shot - It is a surprise that this phone is equipped with a smile detector. Well, you guessed it right! It will scan the subject and automatically takes the picture when someone smiles. Cool huh?
Full HTML Browser - I must say that the browsing experience is descent on this device. It has support for flash, sounds, and even animated images are displayed corrected.
Widgets and Social Network Support - Star WiFi can be an eye candy for its widget and support for most social networking sites (such as facebook, friendster, myspace etc.) and photo web hosts (Photobucket and Picasa). Strange though, I can't seem to find any details on how to install additional widgets (aside from those available from Samsung).
Wireless Fidelity - This would not be called Star WiFi without having support for Wireless Fidelity (Obviously). Utilizing wifi on this device is very easy (user friendly, that is). Kudos to Samsung, it will only take a few touches to connect to an open hot spot.

Panoramic Shot - What's cool about it is it allows for a wide range shot. You will need to practice though.
Mosaic - Take pictures of different subjects in one photo.

The Cons

No 3G Support
No Voice Command
Adding a subject on a message will convert it to MMS
No Accelerometer Sensor for all the Menus
No 3.5 mm Jack
Small Internal Memory
Multimedia items used as Contact Picture, Ringtone, and Wallpaper are automatically copied to phone memory. These items will have duplicates as a result. (now this is weird!)

The Bottom line

I love customizing my phone and doing tweaks to enhance its features. At the moment, I am reduced to exploring S5233W for a few months before taking it into the next level. Personally, I find this baby a great buy. For PHP 10, 000 - 11,000 bucks, you can get this lovely toy. This device is very responsive (at least at the moment) and has a descent battery life. Overall, I give Star WiFi 7.5 out of 10.

Motorola overtaking HTC as Android Vendor King

HTC, for years has been top dog in the Android market, and it seems the least likely company thanks to the Droid is coming from the back to become #1. Motorola and HTC are currently the two largest Android phone sellers in the market, even though Motorola joined the game late in October, they are already passing HTC this year on shipped devices.

In 2009, HTC shipped six million units giving it the #1 title with 64.5% of the market share, but thanks to the Droid Motorola was not to far behind. Motorola took 25% of the global Android phone sales with two million Droid units shipped in a period of 2 months.
