Strategic Networking Explained: Building Connections That Advance Your Goals

Strategic networking is one of the most misunderstood yet key components of a successful job search. To understand how networking works best in a job search, I remind clients of how people use it successfully in every aspect of life. Most people who are successful in networking don’t even think of it as networking.

The Power of Strategic Networking: Lessons from Real Experiences

Think about the times someone has asked you if you know a plumber (substitute: electrician, mechanic, contractor). People even crowdsource others on Facebook or Nextdoor. Ultimately, that is networking. However, strategic networking involves asking someone whose opinion you trust and whose standards align with yours. If you simply put it out on social media, you can’t validate the quality of the recommendation. If your best friend recommends an electrician, you are more likely to trust the recommendation and follow up.

Practical Examples of Strategic Networking in Everyday Life

When my young next-door neighbor told me he recently became a Master Electrician, I told him I would have work for him. I knew he was an Electrical Systems Engineer for a major industrial manufacturer for more than 10 years. I’ve already hired him to install new lighting in the living room and will have more projects in the future.

Some of my readers are aware that my granddaughter, Willow, lives with me. Her father, Tim, also lives here. Willow will proudly tell you she is 2! Consequently, we are already exploring preschool options. Tim asked his work network, and I asked parents with young children at church. Whenever you need something, you ask your network. In my case, I also seek advice from my clients and former clients because their expertise differs from mine.

Strategic Networking in Practice: How Intentional Relationships Drive Results

Intentional relationships are the key! Building meaningful connections doesn’t happen by accident – it’s something you do consistently throughout your life. You don’t wait until you need a network or a specific contact; instead, you nurture those relationships every day. And you don’t overlook people who might not seem like “network contacts” at first—your neighbor, an old classmate, or a former colleague. You stay connected because every relationship adds value in ways you might not expect.

My network is vast, and though I fail to keep up with everyone, I can fondly recall a name and a memory. Last week, I had lunch with a friend I haven’t seen in 15 years. She was my intern with one of the non-profit contracts. We ran into each other at Sam’s Club and immediately decided to reconnect. We had a great time at lunch, strategizing, recalling, and reconnecting.

We were reminiscing about the days when I used to write and share content all the time—before Willow joined my household and my attention shifted. She immediately offered to help by sharing my posts on LinkedIn and told me to let her know whenever I wrote something new. The next day, I posted on LinkedIn and sent it to her. She shared it right away, and thanks to her kindness, I now have new prospect calls coming in.

You don’t know who has the capacity and connections to help you. But all you have to do is ask.

When you try to move forward, do you find yourself sliding backward?

I read a lot. Translate that to 280+ books last year. I confess they were almost all fiction.

I also don’t sleep well. When I can’t sleep, I read. On my Kindle on my iPad.

Yes, I know. Reading on electronics can keep you from sleeping, but so can getting lost in your thoughts; translate that to fears.

This isn’t new. I’ve read huge amounts of fiction since I was young.

I convinced my mom to let me move from the children’s library to the adult library before 8th grade. I told the librarian that I had read everything worth reading in the children’s library and needed access to more.

How do I find books now?

My Kindle is stuffed to the gills with books, again mostly fiction. A friend suggested on Facebook years ago that some people might be interested in BookBub. You pick your genres, and they send a daily email with free or low-cost books:

BookBub is a free service that helps millions of readers discover books they’ll love while providing publishers and authors with a way to drive sales and find new fans. Upon joining, members receive unbeatable deals selected by BookBub’s expert editorial team, handpicked recommendations from people they trust, and real-time updates from their favorite authors. BookBub works with all major ebook retailers and devices, and partners with thousands of the industry’s leading publishers and authors to promote their books. BookBub was founded in 2012 and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. From <https://www.bookbub.com/home/about.php>

What do I learn from reading fiction?

All kinds of things. I learn perspective, understanding, and unique ways of looking at things. For example, I saved this quote on writing barriers:

“It becomes its own kind of paralysis. The longer you go without writing, the harder it becomes to start again.”

This is a struggle I have faced recently. I was a prolific writer on social media in the early days, and that continued for a long time. My own Design Resumes blog has 1,200+ posts. The headline page has this message to readers:

Searching for TIPs on how to IMPROVE your JOB SEARCH?

I wrote content on many topics related to job search, its impact on job seekers, finding solutions, and which tools to use. You might also call it “ways to end job search paralysis.” It has been a resource not only to my clients but to many others who find themselves struggling.

Then I went dark.

As the quote above suggests, it got harder to write the longer I went without it. My excuses are my life. It changed dramatically in 2023 and for sure in 2024. Not only did my husband of 40+ years die, and for some, that would be enough.

Less than two months later, I was asked to take over care of my then 3 1/2-month-old granddaughter. She is now 2 years old. Her daddy also lives here now, but he works long 12 1/2-hour shifts on Friday to Sunday, as well as a lesser time on Thursdays.

However, I am determined to end the paralysis and move forward in 2026. So you will see new content, and I will find time to create it.

What is the Design Resumes difference?

From the very early years, Design Resumes (my company) was founded on the principle that job seekers need someone who will listen and work with them throughout the development of their career marketing tools. They need someone to answer questions, defuse the confusion, and guide them on the right path to the job they really want – not just any job. I started with in-person early on, and when technology caught up around 2009, I moved to virtual.

Even though my life got in the way, I still had new clients and many reports of job wins over the last 2 years. In addition, I had many returning clients who were ready for the next step in their careers.

How to end job search paralysis?

In 2026, I seek to end the paralysis, become visible in as many ways as possible, and prioritize my time to ensure that new job seekers get the help they need.

Are you ready to move forward? Let me help.

You might find the image strange for a resume writer’s blog post. Like most things in my life, there’s a story there. Shortly after we moved into this house in 1992, probably the following year, one of our neighbors came by with some plants he thought we might enjoy. One of those plant gifts was phlox. I planted them and they grew leaves each year, but never bloomed until last year in 2024.

What changed?

In early 2024, I hired Tree Fellas to remove the five large trees that towered around our house. Two were pines, one spruce, a tall maple wedged between our house and the power lines, and the massive basswood that was losing branches in every storm. Removing the trees allowed the light to come in. It turns out that the phlox needed light to bloom and flourish.

Identify the Silent Roadblock Holding You Back

Most job seekers assume they need to “do more” — apply to more roles, rewrite the entire resume, or overhaul everything at once. In reality, one overlooked weakness (like a generic resume summary, unclear value messaging, or poor LinkedIn visibility) may be the silent reason their search is stalling. The first step is to diagnose the single most significant gap, rather than spreading energy too thin.

Key to this diagnosis is identifying your target audience. Who are you targeting in your job search? A broad brush to hit every possible target will ensure a long and unproductive job search. When you narrow your focus and showcase your value to the targets, your value becomes clear and compelling. Your strengths hit the mark.

Reframe Your Value with Precision, Not Volume

Instead of adding more content or chasing every opportunity, the strategic change often comes from sharpening your positioning. This could involve revising your executive summary to highlight measurable leadership impact, aligning keywords with high-value roles, or transitioning from “responsibilities” to “achievements.” One precise change can turn your resume from “informational” to “irresistible” to recruiters.

When you quantify your achievements, you clarify the value you bring to the employer. Whether you use percentages or dollars, you are letting the hiring manager better understand how you fit the role.

Leverage Momentum by Testing and Adapting

The beauty of one strategic change is how it creates momentum. After adjusting your resume or LinkedIn messaging, track how recruiters respond — more profile views, callbacks, or interviews signal you’re on the right path. By treating your job search like an experiment, you can adapt quickly without burning out, letting one smart adjustment become the catalyst for sustained progress.

Strategic Change to Productive Job Search

As your partner in your job search, I leverage my years of working with thousands of job seekers to help you find the solutions your particular goals need. You may have only searched for a job three times in your career, but I work daily to learn the best strategies for my clients.

What do you need to bloom and flourish?

It’s been a tough time

It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve been used to that as the way things go. I guess when you are an entrepreneur, you know that everything doesn’t go the way you want.

I’m also used to insecurity since I’m unemployed at the beginning of every month, and it only changes if new clients choose to hire me. People who are used to a regular paycheck live in a different world than I have for most of my adult life.

My business model is unique

Though I write resumes, I designed my business model to make the client a part of the process. My business started that way a long time ago, and I found that I really appreciated the input from the clients.

As my business evolved with more products, such as LinkedIn, I found that it still made more sense to have the client join me in the development of the strategy and the materials. Therefore, all of the components of my packages are delivered to the client as part of the process.

My husband used to laugh at me because, in the early years, I said that I couldn’t expand my market because I needed the client as part of the process. Later on, technology changed my world. Clients, no matter where they are in the world, can experience the same hands-on delivery through the magic of Zoom and video technology. I started with Skype and moved to Zoom in 2016 when it proved to be a superior and more reliable delivery system.

Controlling my destiny

One of the ways I can control my destiny a little is by making sure I am visible to others and that I let them know I need their help.

My clients are amazing. For the past 15+ years, even more than in the early days of my business, clients refer others to me.

You might say they do it out of the goodness of their hearts. I am sure that is part of what is happening, but they also do it because they know I deliver. They know I helped them. They want to share that experience with their friends and family.

How does this relate to job seekers?

You have to let people know that you need help

In the last year, I often struggled with being visible to others. Compared to my earlier years on social media building my business, I have been largely invisible.

Part of this is the massive changes in my life. My husband, Bill, died last January 2024 after about a year fighting esophageal cancer. Then, in March 2024, I was asked to take temporary custody of Willow, who was then 3 1/2 months old. If you don’t think that changed things, think about raising a baby when you’re in your 60s.

I let my church family and my pastor know what was happening, and they stepped up to help. My church family was amazing. The Downtown Mission Church members, under the direction of a volunteer coordinator, Jessica, covered my client appointments so that I could continue to run my business and meet with clients.

Son, Tim, and his Willow now live here with me. Tim selected a job that allowed him to work 12 1/2 hours Friday through Sunday, so he is here Monday through Thursday with Willow. He leaves at 4:30 am and works from 5 am to 5:30 pm.

Build a Strong Online Presence

Being invisible hasn’t helped me, and it won’t help you. In the days when I was building my online presence and brand from 2009 to 2019, I was totally visible on multiple platforms.

In the last few years, my online presence diminished, and so did my reach. I stepped back a bit, and much more by 2023. I didn’t really see the change until October 2024, when business became sluggish. I was still delivering to clients, but not selling new clients at the rate I did before.

This happens when you stop making yourself visible.

How to compete with bad news

You’d have to be totally isolated to not notice the hostility and anger in the world today. However, you can choose not to let it impact you or scare you. I know it is hard. It is a big reason I found it hard to be out there lately.

However, if you allow that to be your model – the negativity, anger… it seeps into your life and makes it hard to put one foot in front of another. This is why I stay away from mindsets and news that push negativity.

I could complain and spout fear, but it wouldn’t help me.

I mentioned at the beginning that I’m used to being unemployed. I am not saying it isn’t scary to live with uncertainty but I can’t let it take over.

If you are normally employed, then you usually have a regular income. I don’t, and I have lived through it. If you are normally employed, if you keep making yourself visible, make sure that your marketing materials (resume, LinkedIn, cover letters, and other career marketing items) are ready to go. Increase your visibility and tell people you need help.

Don’t run scared

I find that it helps not to listen to the news, read social media, or talk to people who are negative. I read fiction and work on projects rather than worrying.

Of course, I want things to be happy, but only I can control my own happiness. Wallowing in fear just makes it worse for everyone.

You rarely win if your entire job search is based on applying for online listings. Why? The market is saturated with others using the exact same strategy.

Every day, I see someone on LinkedIn posting about the hundreds or even thousands of jobs they have applied to since their job search began. Job postings are not the only way to find a job and may be the slowest possible strategy. Below are some strategies to help you move beyond the traditional approach of waiting for the perfect job listing:

Innovative Job Search Strategies

Engage Directly with Companies

Identify companies that match your career goals.

Develop a target company list and visit their websites.

Select key decision-makers and create a tailored outreach strategy to engage them effectively.

Write focused emails clarifying how your skills and accomplishments match the company's needs.

Build a Strong Online Presence

Leverage LinkedIn to build an understanding of your career path and showcase your notable achievements.

As an executive resume writer who writes client LinkedIn profiles daily, I frequently see job seekers actively looking for new roles with incomplete LinkedIn profiles and no details under their positions. What a missed opportunity to showcase who you are! Complete your profile, share successes, and add your skills to each position.

To increase your visibility, engage genuinely with content relevant to your industry with insightful comments that add value.

Create your own content that fits your career path and demonstrates your expertise.

Network at Industry Events

Participate in conferences, webinars, and networking events to connect with industry peers and potential employers.

Devise your elevator pitch or branding statement to share with others at events.

Find Opportunities to Volunteer

Demonstrate your skills. You would be surprised to learn how many volunteers from prestigious companies want to showcase their community involvement. You may find a mentor for your next role.

I spent my early years working in administrative contracts with non-profits with many volunteers from top companies in the area.
The initial backstory

My husband, Bill, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer on March 29, 2023. It changed the course of our lives as many of you have experienced with cancer either in your own lives or lives of loved ones. We found ourselves making many medical decisions and spending much time at the Aspirus Cancer Center.

Bill had the added challenge of his traumatic brain injury (TBI) from a motorcycle accident that happened three years before we met. It meant that I had to take the lead on decisions while allowing him to have the ultimate say on things he really didn’t want to do. He faithfully did 28 radiation treatments but determined he didn’t want chemo until it was almost too late. He started chemo on November 27, which ironically was the same day our granddaughter, Willow was born to son, Tim and his girlfriend, Jillian.

He also struggled to listen to anyone and dropped weight rapidly, thinking he was getting fit and hoping to lose more. The weight loss in the end made him even weaker. The chemo didn’t work well. We’ll never know if it would have been different if he had done it right away but he got weaker and weaker and couldn’t eat anything.

On January 10, 2024, he died at home. I found him at 4:37am and called our son, Dan, to come before I called 911. The obituary is here.

Whirlwind of doing

For whatever reason, my business which had been quiet in December 2023 to January 10, 2024 took off. My sales were off the charts and my schedule was really full. The year was going well and primarily did go well through September.

I was busy through January and February with many things, including remodeling Bill’s former room. Son, Dan, gutted the room and put up all new insulation, wiring, and drywall.

I also hired Tree Fella to take down five large trees surrounding the house. There’s a story behind all of them but the 60+ foot trees made me concerned whenever we had storms. I asked to keep the maple logs and then ran into issues when I realized how many logs there were. Fortunately my church, Downtown Mission Church, stepped up to the plate and sent a team of 20+ men and boys on the day before Easter to cut and split logs.

The Rest of the Willow story

Due to multiple extenuating circumstances, on March 4th, social services called to ask if I would take “temporary custody” of Willow, who at that time was about 3 1/2 months old. I said yes, in part because of a conversation with Bill who had said that if anything ever happened, Willow is our blood.

But I am now 68 and having a newborn was a huge challenge. My church stepped up again with people who volunteered for childcare while I worked with clients. But bottles, diapers, and sleepless nights made life harder.

Tim was finally allowed to move in October 20 or so and that has been a blessing. Before that he was living with Dan, and my friend drove Willow and myself over to Dan’s house once a week to allow Tim to spend time with his daughter.

Willow turned one on November 27, 2024 and is walking all over the house.

What happened to Design Resumes?

As I mentioned, Design Resumes was busy through September. However, the lack of any new content, social media presence, and communication in general from me took its toll, just as it does with job seekers who go invisible when they juggle family obligations, work, and job search.

I worked steadily with job seekers through October, but sales slowed down in October and November. I know it is because I have been missing.

With Tim living here now, we agreed that he would help as much as possible with childcare during the first part of the week. On Friday through Sunday, when he works his job with Wausau Supply for 12 1/2 hours per day, I would just juggle Willow with my other obligations. He would make sure communication and marketing move to the forefront of my work.

How can you help? If you know someone who would benefit from my interactive career marketing style – writing resumes, LinkedIn profiles, cover letters, executive bios, and more while I coach job seekers through the challenges of today’s job search and clarify the realities of what works and doesn’t work, send them to the website.

I have no plans of retiring, and my brain seems to be fine, so I am confident that I can continue to provide the help job seekers need to be successful and improve visibility for those job seekers.

The difference between a successful job seeker and one who is failing is hard to pinpoint but there are some common themes. It breaks my heart when day after day I see the desperation of job seekers who post on LinkedIn. They share they looked for 6 months and applied to 400+, 600+, or 1000+ jobs. Perhaps they had a few interviews but no offers. They then ask LinkedIn readers to help them.

Often, I check their LinkedIn profile, and there is no information.

They might have a few job titles and companies. What’s missing is clarity of their value and how they helped companies with their expertise.

They don’t know how to job search effectively.

I know the resume is often maligned as an outdated tool, but the resume is the foundation of the job search.

People view the resume as a history book, but this approach is wrong. As much as the next employer wants to know where you have been, they want to see the value you bring.

The reason for writing your resume first

Capture the stories to tell the value you bring.

However, it isn’t the resume that will get you the job.

Your resume needs to shine!

Another thing that breaks my heart is when I see that a job seeker has his resume in the featured section of LinkedIn. Almost always, the resume featured is bad. This kind of resume isn’t a marketing document, and the formatting does nothing to highlight the jobseeker’s value. The resume doesn’t belong on LinkedIn.

However, the resume content does belong on LinkedIn!

Say what? If you are doing a job search effectively, you will evaluate your resume to create a targeted resume capturing your accomplishments in the direction of what you want to do next in your career. Don’t write a history book, write a marketing and targeted sales document.

You can certainly write your resume IF you spend the time researching the correct way to do so via accredited resume writers or career marketing organizations. There are multiple career marketing organizations, but I find Career Directors International to have many resources to help you find the right career marketing professional if you go that route.

Red flags to avoid in resume writing

Be careful of templates since you want an original document.

It is easy to follow what you were taught in college classes 10 or 15 years ago, but often, those models are outdated and have the wrong strategy.

What belongs on LinkedIn

Once you create a value-filled and targeted resume for your desired job, it is time to move most of that content to LinkedIn. When clients work with me on their LinkedIn profile, we evaluate the resume to filter out proprietary or confidential information that shouldn’t be shared with 950M LinkedIn users.

We hone in on the job seeker’s direction so that their LinkedIn profile specifically targets the right industry and role fitting their qualifications and skill sets.

Are you doing the job search wrong?

Don’t wait to get started. The job market is competitive, but the biggest mistake many job seekers make is waiting too long. Determine if you can create your career marketing materials. This is never easy. Most of us in the industry have spent years honing our craft to be able to market you to your targeted next role effectively. If you want to do it yourself, you must research and invest the time.

After you have a value-filled resume and LinkedIn profile, the next critical strategy is to reach out to your network. Ideally, you have been strategic and built a network throughout your career. My favorite resource for this is Harvey MacKay’s book, “Dig your well before you’re thirsty”

The concept is that you should build your network as a lifelong strategy.

The principle is being willing to give back so that when it is your time to need help, you have people who are grateful that you were there for them.

When you strategically work with your network, you will find many more people ready and willing to help you. It isn’t just who you know, it is who your network knows. Don’t wait until you feel desperate, always be ready for the next step in your career.

I work strategically with job seekers, targeting Director to Executive roles in technology, luxury brands, finance, and CPG. Are you ready to explore the difference working with me will make? Learn more.

Life goes along, not always smoothly, but predictably and then something happens.

Your career journey changes suddenly

The last article I wrote talked about turbulence. Little did I know that there would be new turbulence in our lives only 5 days after I published that article on March 24. My husband, Bill, had an endoscopy procedure scheduled for March 29. He had trouble swallowing and had multiple choking episodes. He had two other similar procedures earlier in life, but he is now 76 so I was concerned enough to ask our church for prayers.

When the surgeon came back to the room, he seemed more reserved. I waited for news.

He told us that it looked like Bill has esophageal cancer.

This started a flurry of tests and appointments that took up most of April. We were presented with a treatment plan consisting of radiation, chemo, and surgery. After visiting with the surgeon, the surgery was so invasive that Bill opted out. He was going forward with chemo until he determined he didn’t want to do it.

We determined the treatment plan would be radiation only. This started on May 8 and continued with 28 treatments ending on June 15.

He has another endoscopic procedure on July 18, as well as a second PET scan on July 21. This will reveal what has happened since the treatment was completed. This wasn’t Bill’s first battle.

My husband hit turbulence 3 years before I met him.

Bill had a motorcycle accident in 1976. He was paralyzed from the neck down, in a coma for 6 weeks, and not expected to live, and if he did, they thought it would be in long-term care.

However, he was articulate and ran mini-marathons when I met him, and since I was 23, I didn’t understand the impact of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on our lives. He was 29 at the time of the accident, and we have been married for 43 years in August. He’s had 47 years more of life than the doctors thought he would have at the time.

Our career journey changes

I’ve learned to roll with the punches. Life has never been easy. We weathered job loss and economic turmoil with the rest of the nation. We will weather this cancer threat, too.

When your career journey changes

People hire me to help them with their career journey. There are many ways a career journey can change:

Your job can end

The industry can pivot, and your skills become irrelevant

The company closes

You don’t feel fulfilled in your current role

You are moving to a new industry

Not only do I write resumes and LinkedIn profiles, but I also discuss all the ramifications of clients’ career journeys and the most effective strategies for moving to the next role.

The hardest concept for someone who wants a new job is that they must work just as hard to get the job as they do in the job. If they are convinced that applying for jobs online will get them a new role, they are often in for a long wait.

Every field and industry is different. The commonality is that those who network (talking to people who can help them connect with people who can help them find hiring managers) are more likely to be successful.

The challenge when your career journey changes

Sometimes, people have their eye on a singular target or company. They may have to work very hard to get in the door if it is a popular target. By diversifying your targets, evaluating what options are in your space, and identifying paths to success, you can land a job that gives you joy. If you seek help traveling on your career journey, I would be your guide. Learn more about how to start here.

It took me awhile to figure out that he was telling the same stories about his life and even the accident. When I met him he was the Exploring Scout Executive. He lost that job in November 1979 and we were already engaged.

We held that job and some added responsibilities with other properties for 5 years and then took a transfer to Illinois to open a luxury housing project under construction.

You can take a little breather after you lose a job but don't make it too long.

The key to a restart is taking the next step in your career journey. This is why I created Design Resumes and my interactive resume writing coaching style. While there are many resume writers throughout the world, there are few that spend hours with you helping you to put your best foot forward.

In my process I write with you. I write the resume while you watch the resume develop in front of your screen. You give me feedback throughout the process. I will help you articulate your accomplishments and vocalize the contributions you have made throughout your career.
