3. Keep your dogs protected from the frigid temperatures (if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pet. Offer a little extra food during the winter months because more calories are burned trying to maintain body heat.

4. Frostbite risk areas include your dog’s ears, nose, and tip of the tail. Frostbitten areas of skin initially turn a reddish color, then become gray. To treat frostbite: give your pet a warm bath and wrap him or her up in warm towels. Don’t rub an area that has frostbite!

5. Homemade meals for your pet are a healthy and cost-effective way to ensure your pet is getting essential nutrients without the risk of indigestion, weight gain due to overeating, and the high caloric intake of processed foods. Cuisine made of equal portions of a lean protein (chicken, turkey, beef, veal, duck, fish or eggs), long-acting carbohydrates (potatoes, rice, pasta or oatmeal) and fresh vegetables (broccoli, spinach, green beans, lima beans, peas and carrots) are ideal. Cats require more protein than dogs, so 80 percent lean protein and 20 percent veggies is perfect.

6. Rat and mouse baits are usually used more often in cold weather. Place baits in areas inaccessible to your pets. Peanut butter baits smell good and are tasty to pets. Save labels, and if you think bait has been eaten by your pet, get to your vet ASAP. Call ahead while you are on your way! Most pets are treated with Vitamin K therapy and recover.

“Very light sedation may look like a sleepy pet that’s still sitting up and responding to you,” Baetge said. “With deep sedation, the pet may lie down and no longer respond to sounds or light touch.”

“Sedation and anesthesia are not completely separate. They’re part of the same process, and the same types of drugs can be used in different amounts depending on how deeply the pet needs to relax,” Baetge said. “When a pet no longer responds even to strong stimulation, that’s when they’ve reached the level of anesthesia.”

Individual Variation

Sedation depth varies depending on the dose and the pet’s response.

“Individual patients can vary a lot in how much medication it takes to be sedated versus anesthetized,” Baetge said. “Even pets of the same breed and age may need very different doses.”

Additional Support for Deep Sedation

When the patient goes beyond deep sedation, they will need more support, such as an airway tube, an IV catheter, and close monitoring of their heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure.

“Typically, we consider sedation appropriate for short procedures that will not be very painful or invasive, such as X-rays or small wound repairs,” Baetge said.

“For procedures that may be painful, take a long time, or require going into the abdomen or deep tissue, anesthesia would be more appropriate,” Baetge said. “If surgery of the chest is required, the patient must be anesthetized so that breathing can be controlled and monitored closely.”

“Both of these options carry some pros and cons. Light sedation does not cause as much stress on the body and animals can recover faster,” Baetge said.

“When using anesthesia, we insert a tube into the airway to protect them from any material that may come from the stomach, such as vomit or regurgitated food, that could enter the lungs and cause aspiration pneumonia,” Baetge said. “The tube also allows us to provide 100% oxygen for the patient.”

Full anesthesia requires the pet to process more medication, which may lead to a longer recovery time and temporary grogginess or mild nausea.

“Older patients or those with disease processes may be at a higher risk for complications during or after the procedure, and sedation may not necessarily be safer than anesthesia,” Baetge said. “It is important to talk with your veterinarian about the risks of any kind of sedation or anesthesia beforehand.”

There have been times when I’ve looked at my black lab mix, Django and chihuahua mix, Hayley both curled up in tight ball-like positions and have wondered how they ever managed to get comfortable enough to sleep that way.

But at night, I’ll find Django sprawled out along the foot of my bed as I compete with her for the last two inches of blanket. You might think that since there is limited space on the bed but ample room on the floor that she might curl up in bed, but quite often, the opposite is true.

Peculiar, you may think, as I did, until you understand why dogs sleep the way they do.

According to an article over at VetStreet, Dr. Margaret Gruen, DVM, a clinician at NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine Animal Behavior Service, explains that a dog’s tendency to either curl up or sprawl out stems from biology and survival. Dogs naturally curl up simply to keep warm, so if it’s a cool day and you find your pup curled up, that may be why.

However, dogs also tend to exhibit a ball-like stance when they feel threatened. In the wild, when dogs sleep that way, they are in effect, protecting their internal organs from any would-be predators.

It’s a very common issue among dog owners and it doesn’t only happen with puppies. The majority of dogs do grow out of the need to eat inedible objects. It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what a puppy would eat so it’s best to be vigilant about where you dog is allowed to freely roam.

Many dogs and puppies have been known to swallow seemingly unsuitable items, which you might not find in any way enticing or preferable, but they do.

1. Bar of Soap: Perhaps they said a bad doggie word and just felt the need to wash their mouth out with soap?

4. Rocks: We have small rocks in our backyard that line the pavement, and when our black lab, Django, was little, I was forever pulling them out of her mouth. You wouldn't think rocks would hold any appeal for dogs, but it looks like they certainly do.

5. Tank Top: Gives a whole new meaning to taking the shirt off your back!

6. TV Remote: My dog changes channels when she jumps on the couch but she's never eaten a remote control. Maybe it's the shape (similar to a dog bone) that makes it attractive. In any case, it definitely can't taste good.

7. Money: While no owner would be pleased to find dollar bills chewed up, coins pose more of a threat. They have the potential to become lodged in the body, but most actually do pass from the body harmlessly.

8. Whiffle Ball: Dogs love to play catch so once they settle down with a ball, it makes sense it might continue chewing on it. Since whiffle balls are so slight, it's a good idea to take it away after playing and give them a dog toy with a ball attached to it instead.

9. Corndog Stick: This one I get since the stick presumably smelled and tasted like the corn dog itself. It's a good reminder for pet owners to dispose of any objects that are left lingering with remnants of food.

10. Peach Pit: Dogs love fruit, but you must cut out the pits before they eat it. Otherwise, the pits get swallowed up pretty fast.

Getting along is possible

It can be hard to get used to living with someone day in and day out, even when you are in love with that person. It can be even more difficult to get used to living with the other person’s pets.

It's common to have one spouse be slightly jealous of the other’s beloved pet, especially when that pet has been with the owner for a long time and is used to being fussed over. But it’s not always a walk in the park when you both have pets, either. Now under one roof, your pets must get along, like a furry Brady Bunch family.

Raising a pet can stir up issues that are very similar to parenting, such as being too lenient, not setting rules, letting the dog/cat do anything, etc, and that’s why so many couples fight over their pets. It’s key to take baby steps and introduce the dog to the new person or another dog very gradually before taking a big leap. It’s also important to be honest and upfront with your partner if s/he does something with your dog that bothers you.

Here are some general ideas to keep in mind when blending a furry family:

Establish rules from the get-go. Set bedtime rules. This is a biggie. Many fights stem from the dog sleeping in the bed or not (just like kids!). If your partner really doesn’t like your dog in bed with you, keeping a pet bed on the floor next to you can be a great compromise — and you might sleep better, too.

Help your partner get to know your dog before you live together. Just like a person, it takes time to get to know all of a pet’s little idiosyncrasies and moods, and the more time your partner spends around your dog, the more likely they will grow to love them.

Be responsible for your dog’s behavior. If your pup is chewing on your partner’s shoes, it’s a no-brainer that may cause conflict. You know what your pup’s tendencies are, so try to prevent mishaps before they occur. If your dog is a chewer, supply an abundance of chew toys and keep your partner’s shoes out of reach.

Be honest with yourself. If you have done everything to mend the relationship, but your partner really just does not like your dog, you might have to dig deeper into what is going on. Anyone who loves you will make an effort to learn to love your pup. It goes without saying that if your partner is ever abusive with your dog, it’s time to move on and keep your dog safe.

Create a feeding and walk schedule: Who will do them, when, and how often? If you set up a schedule with clear expectations, there will be less conflict in the future.

7 Tips To Help Your Dog Adjust To Back-To-School Season

Right now, millions across the country are transitioning from summer freedom to a hectic school year schedule that can be tough on kids, parents, and man's best friend. This is especially true for owners of newly adopted and/or young dogs that do best with moderate exercise and supervision. Have no fear, though; your couch and sanity can be saved by implementing common-sense training, enrichment, and smart management strategies.

A Tired Dog Is a Good Thing: While pups that suffer with behavioral issues are not cured by exercise alone, it can be helpful in reducing anxiety, boredom, and creating a mellower home environment. So when coming up with a plan for the new school year, take a look at the daily exercise you were providing your dog over the summer. Did he/she receive one to two hours of play a day? Did he/she go on a hike a few times a week?

Use Time Effectively with Exercise: Calculate how many hours of exercise he was receiving a day and figure out how you'll provide a similar amount with your new schedules. When I talk with working families that own new and/or young dogs, it requires honesty about what they can really give to their canine buddy and creativity about using their time effectively.

Being Consistent: Whatever schedule you do decide on, keep it consistent! This is especially important if you work during the day, your young dog will need to get out for about an hour of exercise before you leave. If you have access to a safe open space or dog park, allow your dog the opportunity for high cardio play (i.e. - exploring or running at top speed). This is more bang for your buck than leashed neighborhood walks. If you can meet up with some doggie friends in the neighborhood, even better!

Give Your Dog a Chore: When you do leave your dog alone, give him an appropriate job to do. For example, consider using food-dispensing toys like the Kibble Nibble or Canine Genius to get more mental fun out of mealtimes. If your dog cannot have full house access while unsupervised, use an exercise pen to confine him in a dog-proofed area along with his food-dispensing toy, water, and other activities like toys and chews.

Crate Train Before Using Crate: If you want to use a crate, he must be crate trained ahead of time before leaving him alone. Remember, your dog should not be left in the crate for longer than six to eight hours a day. If you work long hours and your pup will need potty breaks, consider coming home on your lunch break as your dog makes the transition. Have a friend or neighbor check in on your dog to let him out to run around your backyard.

Dog Walker or Doggie Daycare-Get References: If you need exercise and enrichment support, use a qualified dog walker or doggie daycare. Whatever service you decide to use, get references and stop in to see how they care for their animals before you sign up.

It's All About the Training: With all this change in your dog's life, consider enrolling him in a training course to provide structure and enrichment. Plus, it's a great opportunity to spend time together learning new tricks — even if it's just for a few minutes a day.

Could Your Dog Be A Senior?

There are countless articles and books on puppy care, but considerably less advice is available about caring for senior dogs. Senior dogs are wonderful, special beings and they have earned their right to enjoy a comfortable life, yet sadly many senior dogs are left to fend for themselves when they outgrow their cuteness.

Older dogs comprise a considerable part of animal shelters because many people simply do not want to adopt senior dogs. Even those of us who lovingly vow to care for our dogs from puppyhood to old age often miss the signs (or unintentionally refuse to believe) that our precious pups are reaching their golden years.

I still call my black lab, Django, “puppy.” Even though she will be turning eight this fall, I still recall adopting her like it was yesterday, and while she may technically be considered a senior, she is far from a puppy. It's difficult for many owners to think of their pups as getting older, but the more we prepare ourselves for our dog’s senior years, the more we can provide them with better health and comfort.

Is your dog a senior or close to being one? On average, small dogs become seniors when they are about seven, but unfortunately, larger dogs age earlier. A big dog is usually considered old when they turn six.

What’s Up, Doc?

If your dog is approaching seniorhood, the best thing you can do for them is to keep up with their regular vet appointments. Common diseases that affect geriatric dogs are cancer, joint disease, heart disease, diabetes, and liver disease. Check out what ailments typically affect your dog’s particular breed and discuss these with your vet.

Hit Me with Your Best Shot

Older dogs still need their vaccinations, perhaps even more so. Although they may be declining in friskiness, parasites can still attack them. When worms, fleas, and ticks infest an older dog with a weakened immune system, the chances for complications rise.

Ch-ch-Changes …

Consider what things your dog might no longer enjoy. While walks are usually always welcomed, perhaps a two-mile run is no longer good for a dog with ailing hind legs or a bad back. Again, discuss with your vet.

Tummy Troubles

Like people, senior dogs may not be able to tolerate the type of food or the amount that they used to eat. They also tend to gain weight more easily, which can affect already compromised joints. There are several dog foods on the market that your vet can discuss with you.

It’s Mental

Just like humans, our dogs can become mentally sluggish. To keep their brains active, they can use the equivalent of a doggie crossword puzzle a day. Talk to them, continue to ask them to perform tricks, give their paw, and use brain-stimulating treat toys.

Why Corgis Make the Perfect Pet (And Why I Still Want One)

For a few years now, I've thought about getting a corgi. There’s just something about their stubby little legs, perky ears, and that cute face that get to me. They have the face of a big dog but are small and portable. I’ve only had one small dog in my life and all the others have been big dogs. Being able to scoop up your pup when you need to appeals to me.

If you’ve thought about having a corgi, or are just curious about why corgis are so great, here are some things I’ve learned about them and why they could make the perfect pet.

What Makes Corgis So Special?

Corgis are more than just their cuteness; they’ve got some awesome traits that make them stand out:

Size & Shape: Corgis are small but mighty! They’ve got these long, low bodies and short legs that make them look like they’re built for speed (and they kind of are). The Pembroke Welsh Corgis usually have no tail or a tiny one, while the Cardigans have a full, bushy tail.

Energy & Smarts: These dogs were originally bred for herding, which means they’re smart and full of energy. They love to be active, whether it's chasing after a ball or running around in the yard. They’re quick learners, though they can be a bit stubborn at times, which can make training interesting.

Personality: Corgis have big personalities in small packages. They’re known for being super friendly, affectionate, and just all-around happy dogs. They love their people and want to be included in everything. Even though they’re small, they’ve got a lot of confidence and aren't afraid to speak up (they're barkers, so may not be for everyone!).

Health & Lifespan

Like any breed, corgis do have a few health concerns to watch out for, but they’re generally pretty healthy dogs.

Health Issues: One of the big concerns with corgis is their long backs. This makes them more prone to spinal issues like intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), which can cause pain or even paralysis if not managed properly. Keeping them at a healthy weight and avoiding rough play can help prevent these problems. They can also have issues with their hips, eyes, or thyroid, but with regular vet checkups, most corgis live long, happy lives.

Lifespan: On average, corgis live anywhere from 12 to 15 years. That’s a pretty good run for a dog, especially considering their size. As long as they’re fed well, get enough exercise, and are regularly checked by a vet, they can stay healthy for a long time.

Grooming a Corgi

Corgis have thick, double-layer fur, which can be a bit of work when it comes to grooming.

Brushing: Corgis shed pretty heavily, especially during spring and fall. You’ll want to brush them a couple of times a week to keep their coat in check and minimize the amount of fur around your house. During shedding season, daily brushing might be needed.

Bathing & Ear Care: You don’t need to bathe a corgi all that often, just when they get dirty. Overbathing can mess with their natural coat oils. Their ears also need some regular attention since they can accumulate dirt and wax, so checking and cleaning them every now and then is a good idea.

Nails & Teeth: Corgis' nails grow quickly, so regular trimming is a must. You should also brush their teeth to keep their mouths fresh and avoid any dental issues.

What Kind of Person Is a Corgi Good For?

Corgis are amazing, but they do have some specific needs, so they’re best suited for certain types of people.

Active Folks or Families: Corgis have tons of energy. They love being outside, going for walks, and playing games. If you’re someone who enjoys outdoor activities or has space for them to run around, a corgi will thrive in your home.

Dog Owners with Experience: While corgis are super smart, they can also be a little stubborn. If you’ve had dogs before and know how to handle training, you’ll have an easier time with a corgi. If you’re a first-time dog owner, be ready to put in some effort to keep them mentally stimulated and well-behaved.

People Who Love a Good Laugh: Corgis are total goofballs. Their funny little faces, playful antics, and sometimes dramatic personalities will definitely keep you entertained. If you enjoy having a dog that’s always doing something to make you smile, a corgi will be a great match.

Space Considerations: While they’re small, corgis still need a good amount of exercise and room to move around. If you live in an apartment, that’s fine as long as you can provide enough playtime and walks. Just keep in mind that they can be vocal, so if you have neighbors close by, you might need to work on minimizing their barking.

Train Your Dog With These Simple Tips!

There are many different things you can spend your time training your dog to do. It all depends on what is most important to you. What I do know, however, is that positive reinforcement is one of the best ways to teach dogs to do just about anything. Below are some of my top training tips on how to get a reliable recall from your dog of commands and how to set them up for success.

Start your training sessions with luring the dog. It is the fastest and easiest way to train. An example, while teaching sit, hold the lure by the nose and slowly raise it up and over the dog’s head to get their butt to lower. However, make sure to remove the lure after about 6-12 trials so it does not become a bribe.

Dogs learn through association. Because of this you want to limit your movement to the hand prompt to avoid your dog picking up on a different movement. Your tone of voice can also influence what your dog learns.

Reward often. Don’t stop rewarding even if your dog knows the command.

Always start training in a low distraction area. You cannot expect your dog to perform when there are a lot of things going on around him. When first introducing the command, begin in a spot where there are zero distractions. Once your dog is proficient there, then you can start teaching in other areas.

After your dog learns the command, decide what level of proficiency you will reward and how good of a reward. Give different valued treat to reflect the quality of his performance. If you asked multiple times for your dog to sit, perhaps just a good dog will do. However, if he does it on the first time, then it is a good boy plus a treat and pets!

Always start dog training at the level your dog knows and move at your dog’s pace to the next step. How quickly you move through each step depends on the dog, not the owner. Some dogs can learn faster and some learn slower.

Be patient with your dog. Training your dog takes a lot of time and effort. Avoid pulling, pushing, and shoving your dog during training. If you are getting frustrated, take a break.

Dogs do not generalize. Just because they know how to sit on command in the house does not always mean that they will sit on command in the yard. Dogs take into account how similar or different the current situation is in comparison to what their store of past experience contains. By expanding their store of experience, you can increase their responses elsewhere.

Your dog is unique. Don’t compare him to another dog. They are individuals just like us and require a different amount of work and have different motivations. However, that does not make one dog less intelligent than another.

It is best to train off-leash as much as possible, but only if it’s safe. Because your dog does not generalize, commands that are learned while on leash may not be understood while off-leash. When we really need the dog to do something, he is usually off-leash, like when chasing a squirrel, and you need him to come back.

Every dog deserves a loving home, but should every person have a dog?

As much as I advocate adopting unwanted pets and opening your home and heart to a homeless pup, some people just should not have dogs. It's easy to get lost in the excitement and brush over the chores associated with living with a dog. You will have to clean up, feed, walk, and play with this animal daily, and at regular intervals throughout each day, no matter your lifestyle.

If you don’t see yourself as someone who can handle that level of engagement, it is kinder to not bring home a puppy or dog. Too many people adopt dogs only to surrender them soon after when the reality of ownership kicks in. I have known people who see my dogs and comment that maybe they should get a dog of their own. However, they are often the same people who would have a problem with daily walks, vet care, and even regular feedings. I tell them that dogs are a lifetime commitment that requires a deep understanding of yourself and your willingness to bring another life into your home.

Not everyone should own a dog. Could you be one of them?

Here are 10 signs you should NOT get a dog:

1. You like your house immaculate. We all like a clean home, but when you own a dog, you must accept the fact that there will be times when your pup might have an accident (a sure thing when potty training a puppy), throw up, or leave fur behind on a couch, bed, or special piece of clothing. (Of course, there are ways to keep a very clean home when you have a dog. Pet lovers know what cleaning tools work best.) Dogs, and especially puppies, just might chew on your favorite shoe or other prized possession. It happens. If the thought of that freaks you out and you will not be able to calmly train a dog, do not get one. The same goes for if your spouse flies off the handle at a doggie mess. No dog deserves to be yelled at, abused, or hurt, simply because they are young and/or untrained.

2. You love cute puppies, but adult dogs? Not so much. Adorable puppies stay puppies for about two seconds. I felt like Django was small for about a day and a half and then quickly morphed into her adult size. Puppies stay small for such a short time, and bigger dogs that misbehave aren’t as cute. Ask yourself if their cute factor will outweigh the responsibility necessary. If the answer is no, then a dog is not for you. The worst thing is when owners raise their dogs only to surrender them to a shelter when they become old and gray.

3. Your child wants a dog. Every child wants a dog, but the novelty wears off fast, and the truth just might be that it will be you cleaning up, feeding, and walking them. Parents are the adults, and while children can certainly be expected to help out with chores, the responsibility lies with mom and dad.

4. Your spouse has allergies to dogs. If there is any likelihood that a dog might have to go back, it's better not to adopt. Allergies do not miraculously disappear and the afflicted person might put up with it for some time, but getting sick over the new dog will eventually put a strain on the relationship.

5. You’re bored and think a dog could be fun. Dogs are fun, and loving, playful creatures, but they are also living, breathing animals with needs. They get sick, need vaccinations, and need to be exercised, fed, and loved daily. Consider their needs first.

6. You looove your neighbor’s teacup Chihuahua. Yes, she’s cute, but she might also be a yelper and feisty, and that might not work living in your home with six kids. Picking a dog that suits your particular needs is vital.

7. You travel more than you’re at home. Dogs are social by nature and thrive on routine. It's in no one’s interest (particularly the poor pup!) to constantly leave them home alone (even if you have a dog walker). If you find yourself on an airplane more than in your apartment, get some goldfish instead.

8. You spend more time in your office than in your bedroom. The same goes for work.

9. Your spouse wants a dog and you don’t want to cause a fight. Like children, pets should be wanted and cherished. If you can’t find it in your heart to welcome a pup into your life, warts and all, with open arms, then don’t.

10. You randomly stopped at an adoption event and this dog was just sooo cute! Of course, he was cute, but that’s just not enough reason to make a rash decision. Living creatures are not impulse purchases. Think about it for a while before you get a dog. If you've never had a dog before, dog-sit a neighbor’s pup or volunteer at a shelter to get a feel of what it’s really like to own a dog.

Does Your Dog Bark When Looking In The Mirror?

Who's that doggie?

When Django was still young, every now and then, she would wake up, stand, and start barking in the middle of the night and I couldn’t figure out why. Then one afternoon, I heard her barking her head off when I was downstairs and she was upstairs. A quick look in my room and I saw her losing her mind and barking at the dog in the mirror…herself.

It was funny and endearing. I showed her my hand petting her head but she just would not have it and was convinced that the dog she saw was a stranger, and thus needed to defend herself…against, herself.

It became a regular occurrence around the house. If we heard her barking upstairs, we knew she was staring at herself. Yet her barks are loud and I soon began to close the door so she wouldn’t have the mid-afternoon showdown with her ego. Only now, two years later, did I learn of why she did that.

Why dogs bark at their own image

Dr. Marty Becker, over at Vetstreet says, the “mirror test is considered an important evaluation of self-awareness in animals and a sign of the normal development of cognitive skills in children.”

When a young dog first sees their image in the mirror, they often react as if a strange animal has suddenly appeared. But when the image doesn’t pass the “sniff test,” the pet generally decides to ignore it for good.

Humans are believed to be about 18 months old before they can recognize themselves in the mirror. It seems that dogs might be around the same age.

I noticed just the other day that she no longer barks at herself in the mirror anymore, and she just turned two. In fact, I caught her admiring herself in the mirror last week…and no barks at all.

10 Warning Signs of Cancer in Dogs

Some signs can be subtle.

It’s every owner’s worst fear. Your older pup is getting on in years and slowing down. Of course, with regular check-ups your vet will help identify any concerns he/she might have but in the back of your mind, you’ve heard stories or perhaps had other dogs who seemingly overnight were diagnosed with cancer.

While you can’t prevent your dog from getting cancer, you can educate yourself about early warning signs. As with humans, early detection is key.

Here are the top 10 warning signs of cancer in dogs, courtesy of petMD.

1. Coughing or difficulty breathing
Although typically symptoms of heart and lung disease, coughing and abnormal breathing can also indicate cancer. This symptom will most likely occur if cancer in your pet's body has metastasized into his or her lungs.

2. Lethargy and depression
Dogs with cancer tend to suffer from depression and sleep more, become less playful, and be less willing to go for walks. Although lethargy or depression can set in with any illness, it is commonly seen in pets that have cancer.

3. Changes in bathroom habits
Any changes in your pet's bathroom habits, including difficulty using the bathroom, frequent bathroom use, and blood in urine or stools, are potential warning signs that cancer may have developed.

4. Abnormal discharges
Discharges such as blood, pus, vomit, diarrhea, and any other abnormal substance excreted from your dog's body should be checked out by a veterinarian immediately. A bloated or distended stomach could also be a sign of internal discharge.

5. Evidence of pain
Limping or other evidence of your dog in pain when s/he is active, or if the pain is too great for them to be active, can be indications of cancer of the bone.

6. Abnormal odors
Foul odors from any of your dog's orifices and/or body parts may be a cause for concern. Cancers of the mouth, nose, or anal regions can cause your pet to emit offensive odors.

7. Lumps and bumps
Not every lump or bump is necessarily cancerous, but consulting with your vet is the only way to be sure. If the lump is growing or not resolving itself, contact your vet, and s/he will do a biopsy to determine the contents of the bump.

8. Weight loss
Sudden weight loss in dogs not on a diet can be an indicator of many diseases and illnesses. If coupled with another warning sign of cancer, you should schedule an appointment with your vet right away.

9. Change in appetite
While a lack of appetite can be an indicator of many things, dogs never stop eating without a cause. A decrease in appetite can indicate an oral tumor, which would make it painful and difficult for your dog to eat and swallow.

10. Non-healing wounds
Lacerations or sores that do not heal within a normal time range on the surface of your dog's body may indicate infection, skin disease, or possibly cancer.

Keep in mind that no single sign is indicative of cancer alone, but if you notice two or more signs, take your dog to the vet for a complete check-up.

Signs Your Dog May Be Overheated

Dogs can overheat quickly in the sun

Hayley and Django were really huffing and puffing one particularly hot day last summer. Just going out in the yard to do their business caused them to come back in the house looking like they just braved the Sahara. Here in New York, we’ve had a few heatwaves this summer with temperatures feeling about 100 degrees. While my kids relaxed in the pool, our dogs tried their best to stay cool.

When we were out in the yard, Django felt the need (as she always does) to stay with us, even though our living room was air-conditioned. Hayley, older and wiser, did what she had to do outside and quite happily retreated to the cooled-off room with the A/C. I sprinkled Django a little with the hose but she still seemed pretty hot and was panting quite a bit, so I went inside with her after a little while. The truth is that I wanted to go inside, too.

When temps get this high, it’s vital for dog owners to keep a watchful eye on their pups because dogs can become overheated quite fast. Unlike us, panting is their only way to cool off and it’s a pretty inefficient system at that.

Dogs with smushed up faces, likes pugs and bulldogs, need even more vigilance during the heat and should be kept in air conditioning. The same goes for older and overweight dogs.

Signs of Overheating in Dogs

How can you tell if your dog is overheated? Look for these signs:

Heavy, rapid panting
Salivating
Glassy-eyed expression
Anxiety and restlessness
Confusion
Exhaustion or fatigue
Bright red or blue/purple gums
Vomiting or diarrhea
Collapse

What to Do

Owners need to act quickly if they think their dog may be in distress from the heat. Take the dog immediately to the shade, offer a bowl of water to drink, and put cool, not ice-cold, water on them, especially their belly area. Very cold water will constrict the blood vessels and actually trap heat. If you can take your dog’s rectal temperature, do so and report the findings to your vet. A normal temperature is about 101.5 or so. A reading of 105 is life-threatening. When in doubt, always take your dog to a vet.

It goes without saying that you should never, ever leave your dog in a car, even for a short time. Even when temperatures are what you might consider mild, cars can heat up fast and reach dangerous temperatures quickly.

Make sure there is a shaded area for your dog to stay in when outside, and always leave plenty of fresh water available. But really, I’m a firm believer that dogs should live inside — not out — ever, and especially when it’s too hot or too cold.

Dogs deserve to be inside with you in front of an air conditioner or fan on hot summer days. Remember, if you’re hot, they are, too!

When we adopted our black lab, we were really into watching Spaghetti Westerns. We had become fascinated with the western Django, which originally was a 1966 film starring Franco Nero. Now, of course, when you mention Django, most people think about Jamie Foxx.

But I just think of my best furry friend who we brought home from North Shore Animal League one brisk November day. Although she is a girl, we named her Django.

At the time, most people didn’t even know how to pronounce her name. Just drop the D, I’d say.

Strange choice for a beautiful female puppy? Sure, but we’ve never been one for convention.

We "saw each across a crowded room" has never factored more into my life than when I first laid my eyes on Django. After being at North Shore Animal League for more than an hour, my husband, our kids, and I had pet and held a bunch of puppies. All were cuddly. All were cute. All needed a good home.

It was not an easy decision. I really wanted to bring every dog home and take care of them. Ever since I was a child, I wanted to rescue every dog that needed it. We had two dogs for most of my childhood and my dogs always brought me love and companionship. I remember running home after school to let my dogs out in the yard and then give them a Milk-Bone® biscuit, and play with them. I also remember seeing stray dogs on our street and feeding them and doing all I could do to help them along, but ultimately having to watch them go away. Thankfully, there are not many stray dogs around my streets anymore, but my heart will forever go out to all dogs that need help. It is the reason I write about them. Of course, the love of dogs have also been a constant in my life. I have never been without a dog in my home. I have been blessed.

So back in 2010, when we were visiting North Shore searching for an addition to our furry family (which already included our chihuahua mix, Hayley), it was incredibly difficult to choose just one dog to bring home. I adored every mixed pup I picked up that day and I knew that we were nearing having to make a decision when I saw a new batch of puppies being wheeled into the room. Like in a movie, I turned my head in what felt like slow motion and locked eyes with one sweet 8-week-old black Lab mix. With mushy, wrinkled lips and sad eyes, she looked at me from across the room as I was holding a puppy that my husband liked.

Can I just see this pup, I asked. A couple was right near the cages and eyeing the mushy pup I instantly fell in love with while I waited for an adoption specialist to allow me to hold her. They got the first hold and then proceeded to place her on a table as they petted and played with her. They would take her, I was sure. The adoption specialist said to just wait, they might want to look around and as soon as they went onto another puppy, she would let me hold her. The couple thought she was adorable, I could tell. Who wouldn't?

After 10 minutes or so, they went on to see another puppy and put her back in her cage. The specialist I was talking to went over immediately and handed her to me. And that was all she wrote.

I can't say exactly what it was, because like I said, every puppy was (and is) special and beautiful, and would have made a fine pet, but Django was my dog and I just knew it.

Today, it's been three years since she came home with us and she is my loyal companion and friend. She knows me and I know her, unlike any other relationship. She is always there for me and gets genuinely excited every single time I come back home. She is sweet and loving, knows when I'm sad or sick, and sleeps with us every night.

Old habits die hard, and when out, I still find myself wanting to go home and see my dogs, give them a Milk-Bone treat, and then just play. Dogs have enriched my life in so many ways, so this Valentine's Day, I plan to spoil my pups.

Love comes in many forms and we are lucky to have it in our lives, but no love can match the pure, unadulterated, unconditional love of a dog.

Supplying their necessities as well as comfort items will make the transition as smooth as possible. We asked DogVacay for some tips on what to pack in your pup’s bag to prepare for their boarding experience:

1. Your dog’s usual food: Some dogs get an upset stomach if you change their chow, so be sure to pack plenty of your dog’s usual food for his stay. For dry food, a Tupperware container works best and you can leave wet food in the can. Just make sure you have packed enough for your entire stay, and perhaps a little bit extra, just in case.

2. Any medications or supplements that your dog may need. The holidays are hectic. The shopping, the dinners, the packed living rooms and the variety of foods available, and the general sheer chaos of it all are a recipe for our pets to consume things they should not. Little fingers passing treats under the table and pups that help themselves to whatever drops to the floor can make your dog sick to her stomach, or worse.

The following foods, which can cause afflictions in dogs, ranging from mild tummy distress to death, are seemingly innocent and mild foods that might easily be considered harmless. This makes it all the more important that these foods stay on your radar.

Here are eight foods that dogs should not eat:

Chocolate

Luckily, many of us already know that chocolate is highly toxic for dogs. It’s the chemical theobromine that causes the distress. All types of chocolate are harmful. The worst offenders are dark chocolate, unsweetened baking chocolate, and chocolate mulch.

Coffee

Ok, so what dog is gonna drink coffee? Well, that would be our lab, Django. If you have a coffee cup, she will try to get in your lap and lick it every time. Large consumptions of any caffeine (including those in energy drinks, sodas, cocoa, and even some medications) can cause death. And there is no antidote for caffeine overdose.

Grapes

Seemingly harmless, grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure. Even a small amount can make dogs sick. Repeated vomiting is a telltale sign.

Salt

Just like in humans, too much salt can cause heart, kidney, and liver problems in dogs. Dogs do not need additional salt added to their diet if they are consuming a nutritious dog food, which will already have a small amount of sodium included.

If your dog gets into a bag of chips or another salty snack, it’s OK, and there is no need to panic. Just replenish your dog’s water bowl to ensure that she has enough water to flush out the excess sodium. A dog would have to ingest a great amount of salt to get sodium iron poisoning.

Symptoms include excessive drinking, vomiting, and diarrhea. Too much sodium on a regular basis can also throw off a dog’s electrolyte balance.

Candy and Gum

…but probably not why your think. Any foods sweetened with xylitol can be damaging. Xylitol causes a dog’s blood sugar to drop and might also cause liver failure. As a result, many low-fat, diet snacks are off limits for dogs!

Macadamia Nuts

This seemingly natural food can be fatal to dogs. Just a few can make them sick, and if they eat cookies with chocolate in them, that ups the chance of the consumption being fatal.

Onions and Garlic

A little won’t do any long-term damage, but prolonged consumption of onions and garlic breaks down a dog’s red blood cells, which can lead to anemia.

Yeast Dough

Just like in an oven, if it ends up in a dog’s tummy, it will rise and expand, causing your dog’s belly to swell — and experience a lot of pain. Oddly enough, when the yeast ferments the dough, it produces alcohol, which might also cause alcohol poisoning.

All dog owners want to safeguard their dog’s health, and accidental ingestion of harmful foods often occurs as an oversight. If your dog starts experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, panting, sluggishness, or just doesn’t seem right, please call your vet.
