Dave’s Day is a slam dunk

NORTHFIELD — The seventh annual Dave’s Day in memory of Coach Dave Lewis was the best attended yet, according to Marty Cortellessa.

More teams signed up for the 3-on-3 basketball games and for the morning clinics. The cafetorium was filled with people having lunch from the snack bar and listening to stage performances.

Mainland area Easter egg hunts

The Northfield Mothers League is holding their annual Easter egg hunt beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 28 near the bandstand at Birch Grove Park. The Easter bunny will be there to greet the Northfield children ages 2 through 10. Children should bring their own basket and be accompanied by a parent.

Restaurant Gala raises $125,000 for culinary scholarships

ATLANTIC CITY – The 32nd annual Atlantic Cape Community College Restaurant Gala held at Bally’s Atlantic City raised $125,000 for scholarships for students attending the college’s Academy of Culinary Arts.

More than 700 supporters attended the black tie affair, which offered the theme “Under the Sea.”

Students at the academy prepared a sumptuous array of mouth watering hors d’oeuvres served during the cocktail hour and the future chefs took a bow during a ceremony honoring Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian and Food Network Star finalist Nicole Gaffney of Brigantine.

LINWOOD — The Mainland Regional Board of Education voted unanimously Monday, March 16 to offer Robert Previti another year at the helm of the school district. Previti, 61, has served as interim superintendent since July 1, 2014 when Tom Baruffi retired as superintendent.

Spring Fling fundraiser in Galloway

Penny Angel Beagle Rescue will hold its annual Spring Fling from 1 to 4 p.m. April 19 at JD's Pub, located at 45 New York Avenue in Galloway.

Tickets are $17 per adult and $10 children six to 10 years old. Children under six come free.

Mainland wins New Jersey mock trial competition

NEW BRUNSWICK – Mainland Regional High School emerged victorious from the courtroom at the New Jersey Law Center winning the New Jersey State Bar Foundation's Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition. The Mainland squad defeated West Morris Mendhan High School of Morris County.

Tuition and fees to rise at Atlantic Cape starting with summer session

ATLANTIC CITY – The Atlantic Cape Community College board of trustees adopted a $41,085,000 budget and voted to increase tuition and some fees at a meeting March 24 at the Charles D. Worthington Atlantic City Campus.

The fiscal year 2016 budget, which is $100,000 lower than the previous year’s budget, includes $8,407,171 in county appropriations contingent upon approval by the Atlantic Cape Community College Board of School Estimate, a group of college and Atlantic and Cape May County officials.

Charter-Tech presents creepy, kooky ‘The Addams Family’

SOMERS POINT – Charter-Tech High School for the Performing Arts opened a new musical last weekend, “The Addams Family,” which continues Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28.

The show was created by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, who brought “Jersey Boys” to the stage. The duo takes Morticia and Gomez Addams and their eccentric relatives and gives them a new script put to music.

I will never understand the need to purposely misspell words in business names.

While I know and appreciate that language evolves, there are basic some rules to it, and in the cases when these businesses are marketing toward kids, I find it even more intolerable.

Why do we need to call a social group designed for kids a Kids Klub instead of a Kids Club? Don’t they have enough trouble figuring out when to use C or K appropriately anyway? There are hundreds of others that add insult to injury. Klub 4 Kids, Kiddie Korner, Kidz Club and Kidz Klubhouse are just a few examples.

Q: My dog, Moe, is a very active Australian shepherd. I love going out and throwing the Frisbee for him to catch. I'd like to teach him to do more, but a friend told me Australian shepherds are too hyper to train. Is he right?

A: Australian shepherds are very active and can get hyper when they don't get enough exercise. But they are also extremely smart and highly trainable. You have to stay on top of their training though, because an Aussie will look for a loophole at every chance.
