Right-handedness is a distinctively human characteristic, with right-handers outnumbering lefties nine-to-one. But how far back does right-handedness reach in the human story?

Researchers have tried to determine the answer by looking at ancient tools, prehistoric art and human bones, but the results have not been definitive.

Now, David Frayer, professor of anthropology at the University of Kansas, has used markings on fossilized front teeth to show that right-handedness goes back more than 500,000 years. He is the lead author (with colleagues in Croatia, Italy and Spain) of a paper published this month in the British journal Laterality.

His research shows that distinctive markings on fossilized teeth correlate to the right or left-handedness of individual prehistoric humans.

“The patterns seen on the fossil teeth are directly and consistently produced by right or left hand manipulation in experimental work,” Frayer said.

The oldest teeth come from a more than 500,000-year-old chamber known as Sima de los Huesos near Burgos, Spain, containing the remains of humans believed to be ancestors of European Neandertals. Other teeth studied by Frayer come from later Neandertal populations in Europe.

“These marks were produced when a stone tool was accidentally dragged across the labial face in an activity performed at the front of the mouth,” said Frayer. “The heavy scoring on some of the teeth indicates the marks were produced over the lifetime of the individual and are not the result of a single cutting episode.”

Overall, Frayer and his co-authors found right-handedness in 93.1 percent of individuals sampled from the Sima de los Huesos and European Neandertal sites.

“It is difficult to interpret these fossil data in any way other than that laterality was established early in European fossil record and continued through the Neandertals,” said Frayer. “This establishes that handedness is found in more than just recent Homo sapiens.”

Frayer said that his findings on right-handedness have implications for understanding the language capacity of ancient populations, because language is primarily located on the left side of the brain, which controls the right side of the body, there is a right handedness-language connection.

“The general correlation between handedness and brain laterality shows that human brains were lateralized in a ‘modern’ way by at least half a million years ago and the pattern has not changed since then,” he said. “There is no reason to suspect this pattern does not extend deeper into the past and that language has ancient, not recent, roots.”

South America's oldest textiles identifed by carbon dating

Textiles and rope fragments found in a Peruvian cave have been dated to around 12,000 years ago, making them the oldest textiles ever found in South America, according to a report in the April issue of Current Anthropology.

The items were found 30 years ago in Guitarrero Cave high in the Andes Mountains. Other artifacts found along with the textiles had been dated to 12,000 ago and even older. However, the textiles themselves had never been dated, and whether they too were that old had been controversial, according to Edward Jolie, an archaeologist at Mercyhurst College (PA) who led this latest research.

The cave had been disturbed frequently by human and geological activity, so it was possible that the textiles could have belonged to much more recent inhabitants. What's more, the prior radiocarbon dates for the site had been taken from bone, obsidian, and charcoal—items that are known to sometimes produce inaccurate radiocarbon ages. According to Jolie, charcoal especially can produce dates that tend to overestimate a site's age.

"By dating the textiles themselves, we were able to confirm their antiquity and refine the timing of the early occupation of the Andes highlands," Jolie said. His team used the latest radiocarbon dating technique—accelerated mass spectrometry—to place the textiles at between 12,100 and 11,080 years old.

The textile items include fragments of woven fabrics possibly used for bags, baskets, wall or floor coverings, or bedding. They were likely left by settlers from lower altitude areas during "periodic forays" into the mountains, the researchers say. "Guitarrero Cave's location at a lower elevation in a more temperate environment as compared with the high Andean [plain] made it an ideal site for humans to camp and provision themselves for excursions to even higher altitudes," Jolie and his colleagues write.

These early mountain forays set the stage for the permanent settlements that came later—after 11,000 years ago—when the climate had warmed, glaciers receded, and settlers had a chance to adapt to living at higher altitudes.

Jolie's research also suggests that women were among these earliest high altitude explorers. Bundles of processed plant material found in the cave indicate that textile weaving occurred on site. "Given what we know about textile and basket production in other cultures, there's a good possibility that it would have been women doing this work," Jolie said.

"There's an assumption that these early forays into the mountains must have been made exclusively by men," he added. "It appears that might not be the case, though more work needs to be done to prove it."

Mapping of Maya's "Holtun" site in Central Lakes region of Guatemala locates triadic pyramid, astronomical observatory, ritual ball court, residential mounds, plazas

Archaeologists have made the first three-dimensional topographical map of ancient monumental buildings long buried under centuries of jungle at the Maya site "Head of Stone" in Guatemala.

The map puts into 3-D perspective the location and size of Head of Stone's many buildings and architectural patterns, which are typical of Maya sites: 70-foot-tall "triadic pyramid," an astronomical observatory, a ritual ball court, numerous plazas and also residential mounds that would have been the homes of elites and commoners, according to archaeologist Brigitte Kovacevich, Southern Methodist University, Dallas.

The map situates the primary buildings relative to one another and also places them within the context of the site's hills and valleys in the Central Lakes agricultural region of north-central Guatemala.

The buildings date from 800 B.C. to 900 A.D., says Kovacevich, an expert in Meso-American cultures and co-leader of an international scientific team that has been granted permission by the Guatemalan government to work the site, which has never before been excavated.

Movement to understand early periods, how kingship developed

Known for its far-reaching state-level government, Maya civilization during the "Classic" period from 200 A.D. to 900 A.D. consisted of huge monumental cities with tens of thousands of people ruled by powerful kings, palaces, pyramidal temples and complex political and economic alliances, Kovacevich says.

The ancient culture at its peak during the Classic period has been well-documented by archaeologists studying the civilization's large urban centers, such as Tikal, which was one of the most powerful and long-lasting of the Maya kingdoms.

In contrast, "Head of Stone," called "Holtun" in Maya, is a modest site from the "Pre-Classic" period, 600 B.C. to 250 A.D., she says. The small city had no more than 2,000 people at its peak. Situated about 35 kilometers south of Tikal, "Head of Stone" in its heyday preceded the celebrated vast city-states and kingship culture for which the Maya are known.

By excavating a small city, Kovacevich says, the archaeologists hope to understand early Maya trade routes and alliances, the importance of ritual for developing political power, how political power emerged, and how kingship lines evolved and solidified.

"There is a movement toward a greater understanding of these early periods, with smaller sites and common people," says Kovacevich, an assistant professor in SMU's Anthropology Department. "Little is known about how kingship developed, how individuals grabbed political power within the society, how the state-level society evolved and why it then was followed by a mini-collapse between 100 A.D. and 250 A.D."

Kovacevich presented "'Head of Stone': Archaeological Investigation at the Maya Site of Holtun, Guatemala" during the 76th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology in Sacramento, Calif., March 30 to April 3.

Besides Kovacevich, archaeologists on the team and co-authors of the paper are Michael G. Callaghan, University of Texas at Arlington; Patricia R. Castillo, Universidad San Carlos, Guatemala; and Rodrigo Guzman, Universidad del Valle, Guatemala. The 3-D topographic map expands surveys from 1995 and 2002 by Guatemalan archaeologist Vilma Fialko and Guatemala's Institute of Anthropology and History, which were documented by Fialko and archaeologist Erick M. Ponciano.

Situated in a patch of rainforest on defensible escarpment

Head of Stone today sits in a patch of rainforest surrounded by cow pastures and cornfields on a limestone escarpment, which would have made it highly defensible, Kovacevich says.

Holtun's structures — more than 100 of them — now are overgrown with a thin layer of centuries-old jungle foliage and soil. The site is about one kilometer long and half a kilometer wide, or almost three-quarters of a mile long and one-third of a mile wide. The large mounds protruding here and there from the jungle floor signal to archaeologists the familiar building arrangements customary at a Maya site, Kovacevich says.

As with most Maya sites, looters have tunneled into many of the important structures. Kovacevich and her colleagues will dig more tunnels to further explore the buildings with the help of Guatemalan experts skilled at working Maya sites.

Key structures: "E Group," residential group

The 3-D mapping has confirmed an "E Group," a key Maya architectural structure. Holtun's "E Group" dates from 600 B.C. to 600 A.D. and consists of stair-step pyramids and elongated buildings that likely served as astronomical observatories central to Maya rituals. A stepped pyramid to the west of a long narrow building directly oriented north-south served as the observational structure and was related to veneration of sacred ancestors, Kovacevich says.

"From the observational structure you can see the sun rising at the different solstices throughout the year, which is very important agriculturally, to know the timing of the seasons and when to plant and when to harvest," she says. "So the people creating this are harnessing that knowledge to show their followers and constituents that they possibly are even controlling the change of seasons."

Adjacent to the "E Group" are four structures that face one another around a central patio. The pattern usually indicates a residential group, where cooking and food processing were carried out on the patio, Kovacevich says.

"The closeness of the residential structure to the "E Group" suggests these were very early elites, and possibly kings," she says. "Kingship was just being established during this period."

The Maya often left offerings to their ancestors, such as jade or ceramics, at the base of structures.

Triadic pyramid represents Maya mythology?

Besides the "E Group," a triadic pyramid dating from 300 B.C. to 300 A.D. sits at the north end of the site. As is typical at Maya sites, three pyramids about 10 feet tall sit atop a high platform that rises about 60 feet from the jungle floor, Kovacevich says. One of the pyramids faces south, flanked on either side by the other two, which face inward around a central patio. The platform sits atop — and obscures — an earlier sub-structure platform, buried underground and decorated with monumental masks that are visible from the looters' tunnels.

"Some archaeologists argue that this configuration represents elements of Maya mythology: the three hearthstones of creation that were set down by the gods to create the first home and hearth, thereby civilizing humanity," Kovacevich says. "Re-creation of that by the people at Holtun would show piousness and connection to ancestors."

During the Classic period, kings were typically buried in Maya pyramids. During the Pre-Classic period, however, that isn't the case and they were typically buried in their residence. It's possible an early king of Holtun was buried in one of the residential structures, Kovacevich says.

"Ancestors are buried beneath the floor and kept very close and venerated," she says. "The more ancestors a residence has, the more times the family redoes their floor, making a new floor, and so their mound gets higher and higher. A person with more ties, more ancestors, has more status."

Another familiar structure is a ball court, signified by two long mounds that are exactly parallel, said Kovacevich.

"Those are the two sides of the ball court, and the ball would have been bounced in the center off of the sides," she said. "Almost all Maya sites had a ball court."

Camelina sativa is member of the mustard family and it has high oil and protein content. It contains 35 – 38 % oil and this make camelina suitable for biofuel.

The flight test events was done by members of the 411^th Flight Test Squadron at Edward Air Force Base (California) the week of Mar 14, 2011 for the F22 Raptor.

F -22 Raptor weapons system was selected to be the biofuel blend test pathfinder for all US Air Force fighter aircraft. The test was conducted to test biofuel blend fitness for the raptor weapons system.

The test consist of:

The F 22 Raptor manage to perform a super cruise at 40,000 feet and reached 1.5 Mach speed.

The test was a success and another milestone achieved by the Alternative Fuels Certification Division.

This supports the Air Force’s target of acquiring 50 % of the domestic aviation fuel demand in 2016 using alternative fuel blends that the sources are produced from domestic sources that are much more Eco friendly.

Design for manmade light trapping device could help harvest light for solar cells

Washington, D.C. (November 16, 2010) -- While our direct knowledge of black holes in the universe is limited to what we can observe from thousands or millions of light years away, a team of Chinese physicists has proposed a simple way to design an artificial electromagnetic (EM) black hole in the laboratory.

In the Journal of Applied Physics, Huanyang Chen at Soochow University and colleagues have presented a design of an artificial EM black hole designed using five types of composite isotropic materials, layered so that their transverse magnetic modes capture EM waves to which the object is subjected. The artificial EM black hole does not let EM waves escape, analogous to a black hole trapping light. In this case, the trapped EM waves are in the microwave region of the spectrum.

The so-called metamaterials used in the experiment are artificially engineered materials designed to have unusual properties not seen in nature. Metamaterials have also been used in studies of invisibility cloaking and negative-refraction superlenses. The group suggests the same method might be adaptable to higher frequencies, even those of visible light.
"Development of artificial black holes would enable us to measure how incident light is absorbed when passing through them," says Chen. "They can also be applied to harvesting light in a solar-cell system."

Potential of sperm damage for men using laptops on their laps.

US fertility experts (Thursday 9 December) warned teenage boys and young men to consider limiting the time that they use laptop computers positioned on their laps, as long-term use may affect their fertility.

The increasing popularity of laptop computers (LC), coupled with existing evidence that elevated scrotal temperature can result in sperm damage, prompted researchers from the State University of New York at Stony Brook to undertake the first study into the effect of heat from LC on scrotal temperature.

The findings are reported in Europe's leading reproductive medicine journal Human Reproduction[1]. They show that using an LC on the lap increased the left scrotal temperature by a median 2.6°C and the right by a median 2.8°C. Several previous studies have shown that increases in testicular or scrotal temperatures of between 1°C and 2.9°C are associated with a sustained and considerable negative effect on spermatogenesis and fertility.

Lead researcher Dr Yefim Sheynkin, Associate Professor of Urology and Director, Male Infertility and Microsurgery at the University, said: "By 2005, there will be 60 million laptop computers in use in the USA and a predicted 150 million worldwide. Continued improvements in power, size and price of LC have favoured their increased use in younger people and laptop sales now exceed those of desktop computers."

With the exception of an anecdotal report of genital burns, the effect of portable computers on scrotal temperature when they are used on the lap was not known, he said.

"Laptops can reach internal operating temperatures of over 70°C. They are frequently positioned close to the scrotum, and as well as being capable of producing direct local heat, they require the user to sit with his thighs close together to balance the machine, which traps the scrotum between the thighs."

The researchers worked with 29 healthy volunteers aged 21 to 35, measuring scrotal temperatures with and without laptops. Two one-hour sessions of scrotal temperature measurements were performed on different days in the same room with a median room temperature of 22.28°C. The men were dressed in the same casual clothing for each session and sessions with and without LC were conducted at the same time of the day. Body temperature was taken by mouth beforehand and each volunteer spent 15 minutes standing in the room to adjust to room temperature before being seated. A non-working LC was placed on the lap so that the volunteer could adopt the right position to balance the laptop, then removed, and the seating position held for one hour, with scrotal temperature being measured every three minutes. The same procedure was repeated for one hour, with the same baselines controls, but this time with a working laptop. The temperature of the bottom surface of the LC was also measured at intervals.

"We found that scrotal temperatures rose by 2.1°C when the men sat with their thighs together, which is necessary to keep LC on the lap. But, the rise was significantly higher when the LC were used – 2.8°C on the right side and 2.6°C on the left," said Dr Sheynkin. " It shows that scrotal hyperthermia is produced by both special body posture and local heating effect of LC."

The median surface temperature of Pentium 4 computers used increased from nearly 31°C at the start of the experiment to nearly 40°C after one hour.

Dr Sheynkin said: "The body needs to maintain a proper testicular temperature for normal sperm production and development (spermatogenesis). Portable computers in a laptop position produce scrotal hyperthermia by both the direct heating effect of the computer and the sitting position necessary to balance the computer. The magnitude of scrotal hyperthermia associated with abnormal spermatogenesis is unclear. But, previous studies suggest that 1°C above the baseline is the possible minimal thermal gradient capable of inhibiting spermatogenesis and sperm concentration may be decreased by 40% per 1°C increment of median daytime scrotal temperature.

"We don't know the exact frequency and time of heat exposure capable of producing reversible or irreversible changes in spermatogenesis. Studies have shown significant but reversible changes after short-term heating. However, LC produce significant repetitive transient scrotal hyperthermia for years, and insufficient recovery time between heat exposures may cause irreversible or partially reversible changes in male reproductive function."

Dr Sheynkin said his team now planned further studies to evaluate the heating effect of LC on testicular function and sperm parameters. For now, he did not know an exact time for safe use. However, their study showed that within the first 15 minutes of use scrotal temperatures increased by 1°C, so it did not take long to reach a point that may affect testicular function. Also, frequent use may cause intermittent temperature rises, which could significantly increase a single heating effect.

"Until further studies provide more information on this type of thermal exposure", he said, "teenage boys and young men may consider limiting their use of LC on their laps, as long-term use may have a detrimental effect on their reproductive health."

Dr Sheynkin added that two LC brands were tested randomly to avoid criticism that brands may differ. "All laptop computers generate significant heat due to the increasing power requirements of computer chips. New laptops with higher power requirements may produce even more heat. So far, computer fans and 'heat sinks' are not sufficient. It's possible that external protective devices could somewhat help, but it is essential to confirm their protective effect in a clinical study to prevent commercial advertising and use of inefficient and useless products." Skateistan - Afghanistan's first skateboarding school

The idea of Skateistan began in 2007 when two Australians arrived in Kabul, Afghanistan, with three skateboards and quickly met a group of local boys and girls eager to learn how to skate.

What began as informal skateboarding lessons at a local empty fountain turned into something much bigger.

Skateistan took shape in the following years, with the help of international donors and skate industry partners. On October 29, 2009, the 1750m2 Skateistan park officially opened, giving nearly 300 boys and girls in Kabul, ages 5 to 17, a secure environment and an indoor skatepark to come to every week.

Skateistan is Afghanistan’s first skateboarding school, with separate teaching days for male and female students, as well as classes for the disabled. It’s also one of very few recreational spaces for girls and young women in Kabul.

The organization provides on-site loans of skateboarding equipment, shoes and safety gear. Skate instruction is given by experienced international skateboarders as well as some of the very first kids to step on a skateboard in Afghanistan, who now work with Skateistan as skate instructors.

Skateboarding has been key in bringing together Afghan youth of all ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds, and the interaction is further built upon through classroom projects and discussion.

The students themselves decide what they want to learn, while Skateistan provides them with the resources they need to develop skills and tell their own stories.

Youth (under 26) account for 70 percent of the country’s population, and so the most worthwhile investment that can be made is to provide a space that encourages tolerance, a civil society built on trust, and opportunities for education.

Furthermore, the absolute novelty of the sport means that there aren’t the social norms attached that prevent girls from taking part in other sports. To give girls in Kabul a venue to exercise, have fun and play together is one of the most important reasons Skateistan was created.

Sony NEX-VG10, The First Consumer HD Camcorder with Interchangeable Lenses

Sony's NEX-VG10 is the first consumer HD Camcorder withinterchangeable lenses in the world. It is compatible with Sony's high grade E-mount series of smaller, lighter lenses and also with wide variety of A-mount lenses (via mount adapter).

In addition, it is the first Handycamcamcorder with extra-large Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor. It's Exmor sensor is roughly 19.5 times bigger than standard sensor used in conventional camcorders that enables better depth of field. This allows users to capture cinematic videos with beautiful background defocus effect.

It comes with E-mount 18-200mm lens that has powerful 11x optical zoom, silent auto-focus system and image stabilization with Active Mode (Optical Steadyshot) for higher versatility.

Optical Chip Fast Tracks Quantum Computer Development

An international research groups led by scientists from the University of Bristol have come up with a new silicon chip and technique that could soon be used to perform complex calculation by using quantum particles in the future.

The team believes that with their chip and technique, a quantum computerwill become a reality in less than 10 years.

Quantum computers could perform more complex calculation compared to traditional computer because in quantum computing a qubit could hold up to several states, whereas normal transistors can have only two states (1 & 0). By holding more information, in future a quantum computer could be used to perform more complex calculation and simulation.

The team have developed a new technique to conduct an experiment know asQuantum Walk with two identical photons. Quantum Walk experiment with one photon has been conducted successfully previously.

However, adding another photon to the experiment is not an easy task because you need to have to identical photons and they interfere or interact between each other.

According to Prof O'Brien “Each time we add a photon, the complexity of the problem we are able to solve increases exponentially, so if a one-photon quantum walk has 10 outcomes, a two-photon system can give 100 outcomes and a three-photon system 1000 solutions and so on”

The research group now plans to develop new simulation tools, conduct Quantum Walk experiment with more photons and have bigger and larger circuits.

In the future, a quantum computer could be used to study superconductivity and photosynthesis. Plus, it will accelerate the development pace of ultra fast search engines, new high tech materials and new pharmaceuticals.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport Shatters Land Speed Record (431 km/h) for Production Car

On July 3rd , 2010 - The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport achieved a new land speed world record for production cars with an average top speed of 431 km/h.

The test was conducted in front of the German Technical Inspection Agency and a representative of Guinness Book of Records.

Two test was conducted, in the first test the car achieved an overwhelming speed of 427.9 km/h.

In the second test, the car run much faster clocking 434 km/h. The car performed better than what Bugatti Team has expected out of it.

According to Chief Engineer, Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber Bugatti in a press release, “Initially we will target speed 425 km / hour. However, the sunny weather allows we drove over”

The driver of the world record car was Bugatti´s official tester, Pierre-Henri Raphanel.

By using E-Fuel Microfusion Reactor, ethanol production cost can be reduced as low as $0.56 per gallon.

The Microfusion Reactor can process the cellulosic waste within 2 minutes into sugar water, the main ingredient for ethanol fuel. The sugar water is then distilled into ethanol fuel by Microfueler, another innovative product from E-Fuel's.

Microfueler has two mode of operation:1. fermentation process, 2. distillation of ethanol fuel.

For fermentation process, load weight sensor controls the right amount of water flow into the tank for proper fermentation. High tech ceramic and heater devices are used to expedite the fermentation process by having the optimum temperature.

Once the fermentation process is completed, the liquid ethanol water mixture goes through distillation process for ethanol water separation.

E-Fuel has developed an innovative low temperature vaporization process to separate the the mixture. With no high temperature and open flame combustion used in the method, Microfueler can be operated safely and has lower power consumption.

Once water and ethanol has been separated, Microfueler cools the liquid before storing the liquids in their storage containers.

The purified ethanol now can be pumped into vehicles using the mini pump station or send the liquid to E-Fuel GridBuster generator. New Airplane Seat Design “SkyRider”, Helps Low Cost Airlines To Fly More People

Aviointeriors S.P.A showcased their latest airplane seat called theSkyRider at “Aircraft Interiors Expo Americas 2010” held on 14 to 16 September 2010 in Long Beach, California.

The SkyRider has been designed and engineered to allow more people in planes by reducing the distance between seats to only 23 inch or less, from the normal average of 28 inch.

Even with less leg room, the new seat is still comfortable for low fare passengers.

It's defines as a new basic class. The passenger’s seating position is similar to that of a touring motor-scooter rider.

This will help budget airlines to fly more people at the same time reduce the flight tickets. With a dual or three class seating arrangement, budget airlines could fly up to the maximum certified passenger capacity of the aircraft.

The seat structure itself also provides space for personal baggage.
