I wish I didn't have to write this note today, but I'm sure you understand.

With the time that I'm having to spend re-adjusting to a new daily reality I cannot also continue producing this year's Songs in the Desert episodes during Lent.

While I am suspending the project at this time, I hope to resume production when I am able.

If your episode has already aired, THANK YOU.

If you've already sent me content for your episode, THANK YOU.

If you are still thinking about what to record for your episode, THANK YOU, and please do record when you are able.

Thank you for your participation, thank you for listening, and thank you for understanding.

I hope we can meet together again soon... for another Song in the Desert.

-David

Songs in the Desert is an audio Lenten devotional exploring Christian hymns. Every weekday in Lent, listen to a reflection from a different contributor on a hymn that they find meaningful.

Hymn numbers, when given, refer to the Episcopal Hymnal 1982. But most hymns can be found in many different hymnals.

1 O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free,
rolling as a mighty ocean
in its fullness over me.
Underneath me, all around me,
is the current of thy love;
leading onward, leading homeward,
to thy glorious rest above.

2 O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
Spread his praise from shore to shore;
how he loveth, ever loveth,
changeth never, nevermore;
how he watches o'er his loved ones,
died to call them all his own;
how for them he intercedeth,
watcheth o'er them from the throne.

3 O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
Love of ev'ry love the best:
'tis an ocean vast of blessing,
'tis a haven sweet of rest.
O the deep, deep love of Jesus!
'Tis a heav'n of heav'ns to me;
and it lifts me up to glory,
for it lifts me up to thee.

I want to invite you to contribute to Songs in the Desert for Lent 2020. You can sign up here.

Songs in the Desert is a collaborative audio project about Christian hymns and our responses to them.

This project will be available to listen to as a podcast and on this website every weekday during Lent 2020.

So, what is your favorite hymn and why? Or what's a hymn that speaks to you? The hymn you choose does not be Lent-specific (and Alleluias are okay!).

A different contributor is sought for every day of the project, and you can sign-up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080a45ada82ba2fe3-songs2

This sign-up sheet is for the date by which you will submit your finished reflection. This deadline is two weeks before the day your reflection will air. (For example Feb. 13 will air on Feb. 27; Mar. 2 will air on Mar. 16; etc.)

Submissions may be text or audio (you can record yourself with whatever you have; the voice memo app on your smartphone works well for this).

Submissions should be no more than 600 words, or five minutes long (remember these will be sent out almost daily). Longer submissions will be edited for length.

Please note that there's no need to submit a "perfect take" of audio. Keep the tape rolling and feel free to say things again or phrase things differently. Our editor can cut out any "ums" or coughs and can trim the audio down to something ready for prime time.

There is no expectation that contributors submit music.

Do you have questions? We have answers! Write to songsinthedesert@gmail.com

This child through David's city
shall ride in triumph by;
the palm shall strew its branches,
and every stone shall cry. (Hymn 104)

And did not Jesus sing a song that night / when utmost evil strove against the light (Hymn 420)

Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle, of the mighty conflict sing (Hymn 165/166)

At the Lamb’s high feast we sing (Hymn 174)

“Soon shall each raptured tongue
his endless praise proclaim,
and sing in sweeter notes the song
of Moses and the Lamb” (Hymn 181)

Hymn numbers, when given, refer to the Episcopal Hymnal 1982. But most hymns can be found in many different hymnals.

O Lord, you relieve our necessity out of the abundance of your great riches: Grant that we may accept with joy the salvation you bestow, and manifest it to all the world by the quality of our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
