Los Angeles Songsalive! Showcase at Hallenbecks - May 1st

The next music showcase for Los Angeles Songsalive! will be this Friday, May 1st.. at 7:30 PM at Hallenbeck's General Store.

Hallenbeck's is one of the choice venues for acoustic music in the LA area. It is furnished out like an early 1900's General Store complete with actual antiques. It has good food, lattes and tea, and great music!

There is a great line-up for this show!

Sharif is an independent songwriter, producer, and musician. His songs of heartbreak and loss are framed with such strong indie - americana - pop hooks that you swear you are hearing hit-after-hit. He makes you want a broken heart just to hear him sing!

Songsalive! holds workshops where songwriters gather to share their
songs, gain feedback and develop relationships within the songwriting
communities we have created around the world. The first half is solely
dedicated to an in-the-round workshop where writers present one song
each - either on tape, CD or live followed by a guest speaker/
industry discussion in the second half and plenty of time to talk and
network.

Moderated by Paul Lawrence Moyer.

NEW RULES FOR SONG CRITIQUES AT OUR WORKSHOPS

1. Must be on time - 15 minutes after the start time is too late to be
considered for a song critique.

2. Current financial members get priority. Non-members can present
once all members who want to present have been accounted for.

3. First timers can sit and watch, but not present a song.

4. Non-members pay only $5 to come; free to members (keep your
membership current by logging into your profile at www.songsalive.org

5. We are no longer doing first come first serve, but rather pulling
numbers out of a hat. This will keep it fair. However, you need to
arrive early/on time to even be considered to present a song.

6. Read the workshop rules at www.songsalive.org/workshops and
download a PDF flyer on how to give and receive critique.

7. Come prepared! 1 song either on tape, CD or live (bring own guitar
or keyboard for an unplugged performance) and up to 20 copies of your
typed lyric sheet with contact details clearly displayed.

8. Come with writing paper and a pen.

SPEAKERS:
Jeanie Cunningham

Take rhythm, rock and blues and add a splash of soul. Somewhere in the
mix, you'll find the music of "JaeCie". Working on and offstage with
such greats as Ike & Tina Turner, Lionel Ritchie and David Crosby,
Jeanie also has written and recorded songs as a solo artist and as a
commissioned songwriter for major corporations, (Toshiba, Microsoft,
Epson), as well as for the country of Aruba. Jeanie is also the
producer and host of "The Composers' Corner", a video website
dedicated to "interviewing creators of music, dissecting songs,
exploring new gadgets and techniques and giving viewers a window into
the world of music creation."

Bernard Baur
He's an artist crusader, award-winning journalist, and a creative
consultant. A former A&R executive, he's currently a Contributing
Editor, A&R Reporter and Features Writer for Music Connection
Magazine; and, the Director of Marketing & Media for The Composers
Corner, as well as several independent record labels. Named one of the
"Top Music Business Journalists" in the country by the National
Association of Record Industry Professionals, Bernard is also an
instructor for the Music Business Program at the Musician's Institute
in Hollywood, CA.

A new entity, ASONG (AUSTRALIAN SONGWRITERS OFFICIAL NATIONAL GROUP), has
been created, which will act as an umbrella structure to build upon and
extend the foundations laid down by the respective Australian songwriting
member organisations.

For the first time, Australian songwriters, will enjoy the benefits of
having a unified, group which, while comprising elements of its independent
members, will connect songwriters in Australia like never before, and
strengthen their voice in the music industry.

ASONG has plans to extend the links between songwriters and publishers, live
music venues, governing bodies at local, state and federal levels, as well
as all facets of the media, from radio and television, to emerging
technologies, such as online content providers and telecommunication
devices.

This is an exciting period for Australian songwriters, who provide the
content that drives the Australian music industry. ASONG's collaborative
leadership will contribute to stronger, deeper and more effective relations
between all those who help create the soundtrack to the world in which we
live.

The ASONG registered office is in the APRA/AMCOS Building in Ultimo.

The ASONG launch will be celebrated with a cocktail party and live
performances on the evening of the 21st April 2009 at APRA/AMCOS Level 4 of
16 Mountain Street Ultimo NSW

Invitations will be sent to 200 guests from the Australian music industry

Los Angeles Songsalive Showcase - CALL FOR ARTISTS

Hi Everyone,

This is a call for artists to perform in the Los Angeles First Fridays Songsalive Showcase from now until June. The dates are March 6, April 3, May 1, and June 3rd.

I book four artists per show and everyone does a 15 minute set in the first hour - we take a break - and then everyone comes back for a second 15 minute set in the second hour. We are at a great venue, Hallenbeck's, in North Hollywood the first Friday of every month.

We do not take regular emails for this.

So, just login to the Songsalive.org portal and click on APPLY FOR A SHOWCASE. Make sure to read the criteria. And we have to emhasize that you bring the minimum number of folks to the show. Make sure to include the dates you can play and also a web site or place where I can hear your music.

If you apply for several dates I will keep your application on file until all those dates are filled.

Songsalive! holds workshops where songwriters gather to share their songs, gain feedback and develop relationships within the songwriting communities we have created around the world. The first half is solely dedicated to an in-the-round workshop where writers present one song each - either on tape, CD or live followed by a guest speaker/ industry discussion in the second half and plenty of time to talk and network.

NEW RULES FOR SONG CRITIQUES AT OUR WORKSHOPS

1. Must be on time - 15 minutes after the start time is too late to be considered for a song critique.

2. Current financial members get priority. Non-members can present once all members who want to present have been accounted for.

3. First timers can sit and watch, but not present a song.

4. Non-members pay only $5 to come; free to members (keep your membership current by logging into your profile at www.songsalive.org

5. We are no longer doing first come first serve, but rather pulling numbers out of a hat. This will keep it fair. However, you need to arrive early/on time to even be considered to present a song.

6. Read the workshop rules at www.songsalive.org/workshops and download a PDF flyer on how to give and receive critique.

7. Come prepared! 1 song either on tape, CD or live (bring own guitar or keyboard for an unplugged performance) and up to 20 copies of your typed lyric sheet with contact details clearly displayed.

8. Come with writing paper and a pen.

SPEAKER:
Elisabeth Howard

Elisabeth Howard is an internationally known vocal coach in ten countries and 27 cities. She has worked with STING and was vocal coach to “The Police” for their 2007 Reunion Tour. Elisabeth had a publishing deal as singer-songwriter with MCA Music in the 70’s. Her “Born to Sing” DVD, her CDs and book, SING! and her “ABC’s of Vocal Harmony” CDs and book is distributed exclusively by Alfred Publishing and is now in Italian and Portuguese. Liz is on the faculty at Pepperdine University and is founder of the Vocal Power Academy in Los Angeles with Vocal Power Associates throughout Los Angeles. Liz holds a B.S. and M.S. in voice from the Juilliard School. www.vocalpowerinc.com

Pamela Phillips Oland

Pamela is a Grammy-nominated lyricist with more than 450 songs recorded,
including by Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Frank Sinatra. She's the
author of two songwriting books, "The Art of Writing Great Lyrics" and "The
Art of Writing Love Songs" With hundreds of artist cuts and TV & film usage
credits accumulated over more than 20 years as a successful songwriter,
Oland has become the go-to lyricist composers, directors, artists and music
supervisors look to for the precise kind of lyrics they need.

SPEAKER:
Fiona Kernaghan

Fiona has written 11 #1 songs in her homeland of Australia, had over 100 cuts worldwide in genres as diverse as pop, rock, adult contemporary, country and adult alternative and won numerous awards including Apra Country Song Of The Year. Fiona has been immersed in the music industry since birth. She grew up on tour with her dad's traveling music show and got her start writing songs for her big sister, Tania. At 18, she co wrote her sister's first # 1 single. Soon after Fiona landed a publishing contract with Warner Chappell Music and also signed a record deal of her own with ABC/EMI. In recording her own material Fiona took a decidedly different musical direction to her country singing family –drawing on her own broad mix of influences including Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt and Peter Gabriel. The record earned her a faithful following and a finalist award for"Best New Australian Talent" at the 1996 Australian Recording Industry Awards. However, rather than cut a second record in Sydney in the late 90's, Fiona moved to the U.S and became a staff songwriter for Warner Chappell Music in Nashville. Her first cut in the U.S debuted in the Billboard Hot 100 on Mindy McReady's 'I'm Not So Tough' album. Whilst in Nashville, as fate would have it, Fiona shared a house with Keith Urban's band mates and learned a lot from the then burgeoning star's ascent to international fame. She immersed herself in her collaborative work with hit producers and co writing partners including Marv Green ("Amazed") and Andrew Farriss of INXS as well as becoming an in demand demo vocalist. Determined to keep growing creatively Fiona also lived in New York for a while, fueling up on all "The Big Apple" has to offer. Then in 2002 Fiona finally put down roots in Los Angeles - a perfect setting for her irreverent and eclectic style. She now runs her own music publishing company and works as part of a writer/producer team with her husband, Daniel Kresco. (Dan's credits include work with Michael Jackson, Lee Ann Womack, Reba McEntire, Barenaked Ladies, Leann Rimes and J-Lo.) Fiona's long awaited follow up to her ARIA nominated debut is the gutsy and autobiographical, "Shadow Wine and Truth Lilies". Recorded at home with Dan the new record illustrates Fiona's creative evolution and amazing journey as an artist and writer. Fiona has returned to performing live with renewed zeal and says, "I'm giving myself permission to sing about my own life in a completely candid way and really making the most of the total creative freedom I have now...' Los Angeles Women in Music and The Professional Musicians Union, benefitting Local 47 Musicians Relief Fund, present LAWIM's 3^rd annual Holiday Gift Bazaar and Industry Educational Panels event. As a member of the Coalition of Southern California Music Organizations, Songsalive! will have a booth and participate in the networking and sharing of expertise for songwriters and performers. REVIEW OF OUR OCTOBER SHOWCASE: The Songsalive! Showcase at Genghis Cohen on Wed Oct 29 was an opus of amazing talent. Once again the room was electric with awesome talent, fabulous sound and chemistry that sees this as one of the best songwriter nights in Los Angeles. We run these particular showcases as “songwriters in the round” where all songwriters are on stage together, each doing a song in turn, and often jamming on each others’ songs. Who performed? Co-hosts gilli moon and J.Walker. (J’s spoken word pieces not only make the night really interesting, but open up the notion that Songsalive! is not just about songs, but lyrics, poetry and creativity. Notwithstanding, each time he broke into verse, eveyone began to jam on it… beats, bass, piano twinkles, vocal adlibs. It really made his pieces come to life, and he’s really amazing when he starts freestyling. Gets the whole room tapping their feet and hollering. Liz Nash, Songsalive! member, was spectacular with her quirky and catchy songs. She brought a percussionist, Andy Sanesi, who beat so well on his box, that he was invited to jam on all our songs. He didn’t need an invitation though, he loved to bring the beat on whenever he could. David Babich, Songsalive! Elite Member, filled the room with romance with his thought provoking and sensitive songs. He’s a natural on guitar and voice. Zachary Provost, Elite Member, is undoubtedly one of the finest pianist/vocalists we’ve come across through Songsalive! He’s a cross between Bruce Hornsby and Stevie Wonder. His songs are amazing. We see great things happening for Zach. Next show: Wednesday November 26 7pm. Don’t miss it!

Gilli (pronounced as with a ‘j’) is an australian singer, songwriter, recording artist, pianist, actor, producer, author, painter, motivator, entrepreneur, visionary and empowering community builder. She has been in los angeles for 8 years. Her restless creativity and rebellious nature continually urge her to push the envelope in the studio, on stage and with whatever she touches. She's an illustrious, energetic poly-media artist and her multifaceted albums and dynamic, entertaining live shows have touched music lovers worldwide garnering high praise from the most jaded of critics, including recently a 4 page spread in Newsweek Magazine about her success as an independent artist. She’s won many songwriting and artist awards including Artist for a Better World, Rock City Music Awards (best female vocalist), Benelux Song of the Year (The Netherlands) and Australian Screen Composers Johnny Dennis Award (best song of the year). J.Walker

J.Walker is a counselor, a poet, a rapper and a healer. J.Walker is living his dream, working as a self proclaimed RHYMECOLOGIST, he helps "at risk youth work" through their problems by expressing themselves through rap or poetry. The creativity and passion that J.Walker uses has helped him win numerous poetry slams and talent shows all through Los Angeles.

Chicago Area Songsalive! Organizational Meeting

We are excited to be re-launching the Chicago Chapter of Songsalive! and we would love your input. Please join us for an informal meeting to discuss your expectations for Songsalive! and the Chicago chapter. Also, meet the new chapter co-coordinator, Mary Lemanski. Snacks and beverages will be provided.

If you cannot make it to the organizational meeting, we would still like your input. Please answer the following questions and email them to Chicago@Songsalive.com:

1) While we begin to build the Chicago chapter, we will have one event per month. Would you prefer that the event be a Songsalive! Showcase, featuring Chicago area Songsalive! members, or would you prefer to have Songsalive! Workshops, where we would have song critiques and speakers? For more information visit:

2) Are you interested in being a helper for the Chicago chapter, e.g. help distribute flyers in area music stores, other places to advertise shows, etc.?

3) Do you have a suggestion for a venue (coffeehouse, restaurant, etc.) for the Songsalive! Showcase or a place to hold Songsalive! Workshops, such as a room at a library, college, etc.?
