Taken as a whole, this album is stunning. But the revelation is DISC 2! I have been loving Barbra Streisand for ages. I remember when my mother first introduced me to the sound of her voice as a little girl. I was enthralled with the sheer beauty of it. There is such an unnerving assuredness to her vocals that you just can't be denied. She will always be one of the most superlative stylists when it comes to lyrical interpretation. She is just so marvelous at it that you just forget about how gifted she is with phrasing and just fall and wrap yourself in the lushness of her voice.

Disc 2 allows that pure lushness in her tone to shine. It doesn't have the swell of the orchestra, it is more paired down and her voice as we all know has aged marvelously. As she has aged, and we have as well, you're not only startled by its clarity but also by its richness of tone. When she sings the opening lines of "Here's to Life: No complaints and no regrets/I Still Believe in Chasing dreams and placing bets," you just know its experience she's drawing from.

The album works so well because as a loyal fan, or a newcomer, there is a pacing that builds up a relationship with the listener. A natural intimacy is achieved with DISC 2. Songs such as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning," and "Make Someone Happy," have an immediacy that can't go unacknowledged. Especially with "Make Someone Happy," the woman can still belt that is well known, but here she reigns it in, giving just enough to draw you in closer and closer but not fudging you on the context of the lyric; a lovely rendition.

A beautiful album from a beautiful, gifted legend.

As many of you, I am a huge Beatles fan. To me they are simply the best thing that ever happened to 20th century music. Their songs echo everywhere we go in the works of countless bands they influenced. And they are still beautiful after all these years.

So it was with a lot of anticipation that I bought this stereo set. And as I opened it, I must say I was overwhelmed with all the care, love and effort put by EMI in making this set the Beatles celebration they deserve.

ABOUT THE BOX ITSELF
The whole package comes in a beautifully crafted box with the Beatles logo. Opening it, I found the most beautiful set of CDs. Each one in a digipack reproducing the original artwork. Those digipack editions are very fragile because basically it is all paper. So I do recommend the purchase of this stereo box - so the CDs are kept safe.

The digipacks come with photos and the artwork of each disc is simply gorgeous.

ABOUT THE MUSIC
Wow... I sounds beautiful.
Not only the stereo sounds great, the whole sound looks sharper, clearer and brighter. It look like it was all recorded yesterday (ha!).

Listening to ELEANOR RIGBY, MICHELLE, YESTERDAY, FOR NO ONE, AND I LOVE HER, I FEEL FINE and CAN'T BUY ME LOVE (for example) was a wonderful experience. The recording simply comes to life with a beautiful stereo sound like nothing I ever heard. Those old editions from 1987 really sound awful when compared. For No One is a great example: the french horn part is is much more dynamic and warm.

The later recordings like ABBEY ROAD and GET BACK sound simply amazing. GET BACK (the song) is so clearer I felt I was listening to all instruments live in my room. It sounds like all instruments are really there together without the muffled sound of the old edition (funny I say "muffled" now since I was used to think those old editions were great). It is like listening to it all for the first time.

On ABBEY ROAD, for example, the great string of non stop songs in the middle of the album is so rich I had to play certain segments again (because I was amazed). POLYTHENE PAM and SHE CAME THROUGH THE BATHROOM WINDOW are amazing! - And they left me feeling that The Beatles' lesser known songs must all be rediscovered because they sound so good! George Harrison's SOMETHING almost made me cry.

Finally we have The Beatles we can blast through our speakers and completely obliterate any Justin Timberlake or Jonas Brothers our neighbors are playing. (laughs) Just put GLASS ONION, I AM THE WALRUS or CARRY THAT WEIGHT and look at the neighbors' kids' eyes as they put Kanye West's CD back in its case. (laughs)

I was afraid the stereo separation would feel plastic and artificial - I don't know why - but no, I did not have that feeling while listening to this set. It seems it was all recorded and handled with lots of care, love and cutting edge technology.

This is a great day to celebrate the biggest band ever!
And congratulations to the EMI team who made this possible and put this all together.

2009 album from Johnny Cash's enormously talented singing/songwriting daughter. The List features Rosanne's contemporary interpretations of songs from a list of essential Country songs passed on to her by her legendary father. Featuring duet partners Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Rufus Wainwright, and Jeff Tweedy. 12 tracks.

Rosanne Cash was my favorite "country" female vocalist during the 1980's with her brillant string of country/rock songs that seemed to hit number one on the country charts with every single release. She was as big any female star during this era and yet she had never really chased fame, she was just a singer-songwriter who happened to be damn popular. Then suddenly after a decade of enormous success things drastically changed in both Rosanne's personal and professional life; her divorce from Rodney Crowell (who produced her records) and a drastic shift in her music from pop-rock flavored mainstream country music to a brooding folk/rock. The critics applauded but to many of Rosanne's longtime fans, it was almost as if she had divorced us as well, her music was still thoughtful and well-crafted but it was it if she was pointedly making it for new audience in a new arena. Since 1990 she has released five of these albums, which have sold dramatically less than her country work, a genre she seemed eager to shake off at the time.

Certain things are in one's blood and soul, however, and being the daughter of Johnny Cash, country music will always be a part of her. In 1973 when she was a teenager, she accompanied Cash on one of his concert tours and the country legend was startled to learn how many legendary country songs his California-raised daughter was unfamiliar with. He sat down and compiled a list of the 100 greatest country songs ever written and encouraged Rosanne to seek them out. A few years ago, Rosanne found the old handwritten list and was inspired to record this album, THE LIST, her first collection of covers from songs that were named on the paper. From Jimmie Rodgers MISS THE MISSISSIPPI AND YOU to Hank Williams' TAKE THESE CHAINS FROM MY HEART to Patsy Cline's SHE'S GOT YOU, Rosanne sounds completely as at home with this material as she is with her own songs. performing most of them in a stripped-down country-folk manner, often accompanied just by husband-producer John Leventhal on guitar. A few of the songs feature harmony singing from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, and Rufus Wainwright but these are not conventional duets. Indeed, Rosanne gives new life to every track with these new arrangements from a bluesy cover of Hank Snow's I'M MOVIN' ON to a new spin on Ray Price's HEARTACHES BY THE NUMBER. She turns Danny Gill and Marijohn Wilkin's unforgettable LONG BLACK VEIL (a 1950's hit for Lefty Frizzell) into the 19th century folk song many believe it is, complete with retaining the song's male first person telling, something rarely done in country music since some of Sara Carter's vocals back in the 1920's (Rosanne similarly sings Bob Dylan's "The Girl From North Country" as it was written for a male vocalist). There is a legitimate 19th century "traditional" folk song on the album, the ever haunting MOTHERLESS CHILDREN as well as one of the Carter Family's greatest songs, BURY ME BENEATH THE WILLOW.

In this album, Rosanne finds a brillant, seamless marriage between her pre and post 1990 work, one that should satisfy every one of her fans and surely win her many new admirers. Not doubt it's already starting to do this, having hit number one on Amazon.com's Best Sellers list of all CD's. This is a outstanding recording. I think it's the best album of Rosanne's career - to date. It certainly seems to be the opening of a new door in the career of this 54-year-old artist.

Rosanne has always been one of the finest female vocalists of any genre of the last several decades, yet here she proves she is able to brillantly intrepret legendary songs as well as her own original compositions. And to having her recording "country" again is like a dream come true for many of her most devoted admirers. Heck, you can even get this collection on Vinyl LP at Amazon!! Thomas Wolfe was somewhat incorrect; sometimes you can go home again.

'Crazy Love', Michael Bublé's first CD in two and a half years, features two original songs along with his always original take on 11 standards from various eras. The multi-Grammy winning artist hunkered down in recording studios in LA, Brooklyn, New York and his hometown of Vancouver for the last six months to make his 'ultimate record about the inevitable roller coaster ride of relationships.'

The first single, 'Haven't Met You Yet,' written by Bublé (with Alan Chang and Amy Foster) is scheduled to be released to radio on August 31st. Delbert slides as easily into country, blues, jazz, gospel, and folk styles as anyone I've ever heard. He does this so naturally, that you could easily miss it if you weren't paying attention. This record rewards close listening, but can also be enjoyed at a party. It will get the attention of anyone with a taste for any of the above mentioned styles, but has an appeal far beyond the average purist.

Each song has its own identity, but not so much that you find yourself saying "Oh, here's the country tune." The stew has such a fine mix of ingredients that you're apt to hear a blues vocal turn within the context of a country tune or jazz piano on a blues tune. Or a little bit of all of the above. This is done rather seamlessly; it is never distracting or jarring for the listener. All is in service to the song, and his remarkable voice, which other reviewers here have described perfectly as weathered. I liken it to a perfect cup of coffee - bold and smooth, with a bit of a kick. You won't have any problem hearing or understanding the words, that's for sure.

Six years have passed since San Francisco trio Third Eye Blind released their last album "Out of the Vein." While many things have changed in the music landscape since then, the release of "Ursa Major" proves that Third Eye Blind is still one of the most relevant bands on the scene today. The album plays out as such.

1. Can You Take Me- 8/10
Solid uptempo rocker with a searing guitar riff and an infectious bridge breakdown.

2. Don't Believe A Word- 9/10
This song is best described as an all out rock anthem. Jangly verses lead up to a chorus that is worthy of being a stadium rock song. Controversial and witty, lead singer Stephan Jenkins shows off his lyrical wit on this track.

3. Bonfire- 10/10
A haunting intro, understated midtempo verses, and the most catchy chorus on the album make this one of the best songs Third Eye Blind has ever released.

4. Sharp Knife- 10/10
A rapid fire gem, this track grabs you at the outset and takes you on a musical adventure. The verses build up seamlessly to a soaring chorus that is one of the highlights on the album.

5. One In Ten- 7/10
Weakest song on the album. A slow acoustic ballad that just doesn't connect as well as the other songs on "Ursa."

6. About To Break- 9/10
Similar to the song "Wounded" off their sophomore album "Blue," this song starts slow and builds up to a powerful chorus. The bridge is the highlight of the track as it builds up to a face melting guitar riff and a sing-a-long ending.

7. Summertown- 9/10
Stephan Jenkins went a bit overboard with the rapping at the end of this song, so I prefer to skip to the next track around the 3:30 mark. If you do that, you'll find this track to be one of the best on the album. Extremely catchy and uptempo, this song is the most pop-friendly track on "Ursa."

8. Why Can't You Be- 8/10
A solid midtempo acoustic ballad, this is the studio version of the song originally released as a live track on the Red Star EP. Jenkins has changed up the lyrics slightly (apparently, now he's the one who has forgotten about Robbie Williams), but for the most part, this is very much like the Red Star EP live cut.

9. Water Landing- 9/10
For those who have followed the story behind this song, you may find yourself singing a completely different chorus and having to correct yourself on this one. Billed as "Break Me" for several years, Jenkins decided to rework the song and the result is "Water Landing." The speed talking rap style that Jenkins has become enamored with is much more enjoyable on this track (in comparison to "Summertown"). This track ebbs and flows nicely and leads up seamlessly to a soaring chorus with solid backing vocals echoing throughout.

10. Dao of St. Paul- 8/10
A very chill song that builds up nicely to a sing-a-long chorus that is quickly followed up by a surprisingly gripping guitar solo. The fade-out of this song is a highlight.

11. Monotov's Private Opera- 9/10
A great album closer, this midtempo ballad is extremely catchy and infectious. This track also ends with a solid fade-out.

12. Carnival Barker (Instrumental)- 7/10
The 3EB faithful are big supporters of this track, but I would have preferred this slot be taken up by a song that was not previously available. That being said, here's to hoping the forthcoming "Ursa Minor" ("Ursa Major" B-Sides) is released as promised.

After six years, Stephan Jenkins and company have proven once again with the release of "Ursa Major" why Third Eye Blind is still one of the most relevant bands producing music today. Releasing this album independently, "Ursa" most likely won't receive much airplay, but fortunately this band has grown out of the phase where it needs the help of radio to spread its message.

Yesterday. I enter Circuit City at Union Square in NYC with my wife, who is from Japan, and this DVD is on three modestly sized plasma TVs a the top of the escalator--which is crowded with mesmorized viewers.

We could not help it. The show was so awesome that we found ourselves standing there, entranced.

My wife put it correctly when she said to me in Japanese, "Whatever he does in life, people will always be facinated with his performances," meaning no matter what freakish things he does to or with his body, it just plain wont effect the fact that he truly is the King of Pop (though I must then appoint Prince as the Emperor of Pop--sorry Michael).

That really summed it up; we were watching one of the all time great masters of performance, and indeed were lucky to be alive when his career was in full swing.

Michael Jackson is one of the all time greats--like Harry Houdini, Fred Astaire, Jimmy Hendrix, or Miles Davis. He's a master of the stage, and--though I protest with myself--has a fantastic musical ability that can't help but mesmorize.

On this DVD, there is of course a lot of lip synching. This isn't so much a music concert as a stage show. And as a stage show, it's one of the greatest of all time. Just seeing Jackson dance to his own music is worth your money.

*****There was one musical break that was facinating, though it wasn't performed by Jackson. At one point in the performance, he shares the stage with a solo guitarist--apparrently just for effect--but the guitarist completely takes over the stage. Jackson points him out to a stage hand, who tries to stop the solo, and the guitarist just keeps going with a fantastic, mad, crazy solo.

It's pretty rare to see a solo like that unless you're in the biz. I immediately thought of Mike Stern--who this was not--totally dominating the show. Jackson should have let him go a bit longer, but instead started the next bit and had the guitarist's plug pulled.

Bottom Line: I suppose that says a lot about Jackson's way of performing--he's a perfectionist; it's all planned out, and it follows the plan exactly. Other performers would have played counterpoint to that solo (as the guitarist was starting to do when Jackson 'interrupted), shared the limelight, and acknowledged that this is what musical performance is really all about--that there's really no such thing as a solo artist, unless of course you're Michael Jackson.

Anyway, I can't help but give this DVD 5 stars on sheer greatness.

Containing never-before-seen footage, behind the scenes action, unreleased videos, and all are full-length. This price is also a bargain. Pick it up even if you're not a die-hard. It is so worth it!! Dangerous is one of MJ's greatest albums with some record-breaking fantastic music videos! "The Short Films" contains: The Teaser (you have to see it!!), the controversial full lentgh Black or White (complete with The Simpsons ending and the face morphing and dance sequence), The Superbowl Heal The World performance (excellent), Remember The Time (starring Iman, Eddie Murphy, and Magic Johnson), also has behind the scenes (great dancing!!), Will You Be There, In The Closet (with Naiomi Campbell- the best MJ video ever!!)(with behind the scenes action also,) Gone too Soon, (A tragic remembrance of AIDS victim Ryan White), Jam (a awesome video with Michael Jordan, Kris Kross, and Heavy D.), Heal The World (donate to the foundation! It's a worthy cause!!), Give In To Me (featuring Slash from Guns n' Roses), Who Is It (such a great beat!!) and last but not least, concert footage to the Dangerous Tour. This movie is something. You have got to see it. The album is legendary, the beats are ear-piercing and jammin'!! All of these perfect music videos have such a story to tell. Michael Jackson is the KING OF POP!!!!

TEASER- This commercial for the HIStory album is just as extravagant as one of Michael's music videos. Featuring Michael himself amidst thousands of soldiers, you can't go wrong with this. AWESOME!

BILLIE JEAN (Performance from Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, and Forever)- This shocking performance earned Michael Jackson an Emmy nomination and started the Moonwalking craze that lives on today. CLASSIC!
BEAT IT- This video, which was also featured on HIStory: Video Greatest Hits Vol. 1, is a classic from THRILLER. Featuring real gang members and stunning choreography, this video is a must-have!
LIBERIAN GIRL- This video from BAD is VERY rare. I did not know it even existed before I bought this tape. Features cameos from Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Dreyfuss, Danny Glover, and even Bubbles!
SMOOTH CRIMINAL- There are many versions of this music video, but the one on this tape is probably the best. Probably the best choreography of any of Michael's videos. INDISPENSIBLE!
1995 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS PERFORMANCE- A showstopping performance! This is a 15-minute medly with Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, The Way You Make Me Feel, Scream, Beat It, Black Or White, Billie Jean, Dangerous, Smooth Criminal,and You Are Not Alone. One of the most memorable performances in MTV's HIStory!
THRILLER- The music video of all music videos. The masterpiece. Zombies... Werewolves... Vincent Price... What more could you ask for? Directed by John Landis(An American Werewolf in London) this video is heralded by many as the greatest music video of all time!
SCREAM (Vocal duet with Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson)- The video that shocked the world in 1995. With a monstrous $7 million budget and great special effects, this video is one of my favorites. The first and only duet with Michael and Janet, this video was worth every cent.
CHILDHOOD (Theme from Free Willy 2)- One of Michael's most earnest and honest songs. This video makes you wonder what it would be like to be a child for just one more day. GREAT!
YOU ARE NOT ALONE- Another great video, this was the first song ever to debut on the charts at number one. Featuring Lisa Marie Presley and Michael together in the video, this is an instant classic!
EARTH SONG- One of Michael Jackson's most powerful video and song EVER! This video was actually filmed in four different continents, and the people in the video are not professional actors but actually people of that region. This video is one of my personal favorites, for it is so powerful.
THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT US- A great song and video with awesome percussion. This video was banned from MTV and VH1 because of the contreversy surrounding the lyrics. Directed by Spike Lee.
STRANGER IN MOSCOW- An awesome song with a simple yet great concept video. It is just people walking in the rain, but when you see the video, it is so much more.
BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR (Refugee Camp Mix)- This video shows Michael dancing in a club with friends. Although the video is nothing too special, the song is GREAT! AWESOME!

The Biggest Album Ever just got bigger. The 25th Anniversary Edition of Thriller celebrates this ground-breaking album with 7 bonus tracks, six of which are previously unreleased. The new tracks include exclusive remixes from Kanye West, Fergie, will.i.am and Akon along with a previously unreleased track from the Thriller sessions, "For All Time," newly mixed and mastered by Michael Jackson. Also included is a BONUS DVD with new, digitally restored versions of the three videos from the album as well as the Michael Jackson's groundbreaking performance of "Billie Jean" on the "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" television special (first broadcast on NBC May 16, 1983).

Also included in all versions of the release is a new personal greeting from Michael Jackson to his fans penned exclusively for this special release.

Should several of the tracks on the 25th anniversary edition of Thriller find their way onto your MP3 player, you're going to have to admit: the music holds up. "Beat It" is not about to go stale, at least not without a rumble, and neither are "Billie Jean" and "P.Y.T." Even if you put the record-hurtling hits aside, you're still left with the realization that without MJ, there might not have been a JT [Justin Timberlake], never mind a Ne-Yo (listen closely to "Human Nature" and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'"). The bonus DVD bundled with the expanded CD includes a digitally redone version of the famous title-track video, among other clips, and it still astonishes with its choreography and attitude. This is a review of the VHS video "Michael Jackson: Video Greatest Hits HIStory" Vol. 1. Whether or not you are a fan of Michael Jackson, this is an essential video because it shows how good music videos can be. BILLIE JEAN is a striking video that broke down color barriers on MTV; THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL has a loose improvisational feeling to it which makes it fun to watch; BLACK OR WHITE is modern masterpiece complete with morphing and the controversial "panther dance" sequence.
In the original version of this video, Michael smashes in a car windshield that has racist grafitti on it... he is fighting back against the racism. However, in the version included on this tape, the grafitti is edited out, so we just see Michael smashing a window for no apparent reason. Even so, the video is still an amazing experience! ROCK WITH YOU takes us back to 1980 before Michael's plastic surgery; BAD and BEAT IT include some of the best choreography even seen in music videos, although the version of BAD on this tape is the short version, not the full version with Wesley Snipes. This tape also includes the videos for Thriller, Remember The Time, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Heal The World in their entirety. This video is a powerful mix of music, dance, and film. Even if you don't think Michael is the King of Pop, this collection proves he is the King of VIDEO!
