So, what exactly are you in the mood for? If it's '80s garage/psyche we have a great selection of tunes in that genre for you including a rare gem by The Laughing Soup Dish as well as some quite fuzzy tracks by The Stomachmouths and The Primates. We'll even throw in some Angry Samoans and a bit of Minor Threat when you're not looking just to mix things up a bit. If you are not completely satisfied we might possibly dig up some some Screamin' Jay Hawkins or just start spinning some old 'show tunes' record from Beat-Man's dusty record cabinet. The trick is to just keep listening 'cause we're sure that there is something for everyone to enjoy from this episode. Just relax and stop being so fussy!
What's so funny about Sonic Nightmares #34? Could it be the side-splitting tracks by the Defectors or the Magnificent Brotherhood? Or is it the hilarious sounds of the Rokes, the Monks, or the Mirage that drive you into a fit of uncontrolled giggling? Whatever it is, this episode will cause you to pee in your pants. We certainly did!
Sonic Nightmares is produced in Switzerland. Switzerland is a small country in the middle of western Europe sometimes overshadowed by its larger neighbors. In the true spirit of international relations, Gringo Starr highlights some of the coolest bands from our southern border, Italy. The Reverend Beat-Man spins some classic tunes from the land to our west, France. Brother Panti-Christ blows this whole theme off in a most convincing way by playing hip junk from everywhere and El Tiki is in a small box somewhere so he won't be able to play his iPod for you this episode. Give pizza chance.
SKY SAXON

The day, the date, a thing of uncertainty. In this the feeler of the generation, the ideal figure for the flowers of this world. A true seed, a grower, a talent no doubt, the original first-planted of all the seed children. Asking, "Please open up the days of dreams and horrors and uncertainties of the years to come." This is the mind of beauty, a perfect being. Singing, laughing, crying or writing, the world will not pass him by.

In primitive times, man would spend his day hunting, stalking animals with primitive tools, hoping to catch his dinner, and at the end of the day would sling the carcass over his shoulder and drag it back to his cave. When he arrived, completely exhausted, his wife would dress and cook the meat while he collapsed in complete contentment. During this episode of Sonic Nightmares, the boys attempt to recreate these simple times by beating drums, starting a fire in the studio and chanting to the way-out sounds of bands like the Chocolate Factory, the Staggers, Hipbone Slim & the Knee Tremblers, the Monsters and the Del-Gators. Stick a bone through your nose and join the party. Ugga Booga!!

Sonic Nightmares is a Rock & Roll DJ collective existing over 10 years in Bern, Switzerland. The team been delighting fans of obscure Rock & Roll music since their first collaboration in 1995. First appearing on the Swiss scene at their own Bad Taste Rock & Roll Revue, the Sonic Nightmares crew focused their sound on very independent releases from the 1940's til today. Underground sounds from every decade make the Sonic Nightmares sound eclectic, unique and extremely danceable.

This fierce quartet of rockin' manics came together in the mid 90's on Radio Rabe in Bern to produce one of the wildest shows that station ever heard. Specializing in a combination of 'Bern Deutsch and California English', the listener was driven through hours of extremely rockin music from all eras, hilarious comedy sequences mixed with interviews of musicians and label owners, as well as their famous 'prank' phone calls and ticket giveaways. The Sonic Nightmares Radio Show was always a wild listening adventure, even if you didn't like their brand of music. After five years of pushing sounds and jokes through the airwaves in the midst of an electronic music explosion in Switzerland the Sonic Nightmares Radio team gave up their show deciding to focus on playing their records in clubs all over the country.

Thanks to the internet and the another new wave of international Rock & Roll interest, the Sonic Nightmares Radio team began creating a new type of broadcast that fits their needs, Podcasting. With the ability nowadays to listen & download their radio-like shows, now the world can listen in on the madness once restricted to local Swiss audiences. The Sonic Nightmares team has joined forces with Garagepunk.com to host their podcasts and have compiled over 20 new shows in a 'easy to listen' archive. With a new show coming out every other Friday of each month, the Sonic Nightmares crew has brought a new exciting level to their show. Though focusing on their beloved music from the mid-60's their show is often breaking down their own barriers and playing for the world a very unique collecting of modern and hard to find gems from all kinds of eras.

The party at Club ELF will be the first of it's kind since the team has reunited on the airwaves. The Sonic Nightmares team will simulate a radio show live while the club goer can relax and listen or drink, yell and dance all night long. A must for any fan of good Rock & Roll music!

The Untold Fables - Live at Safari Sam’s, Huntington Beach, CA (1985)
With commentary by Gringo Starr from the Sonic Nightmares podcast.

The Untold Fables were Paul Carey on voice, Jon Niederbrach on guitar, Robert Butler (later of The Miracle Workers) on bass and Paul Sakry on drums. Although The Fables were mainly associated with the mid-’80s L.A. psychedelic/garage revival scene that grew out of a club called the Rave Up and later moved to Greg Shaw’s Cavern Club, their music also included strong influences from ’70s punk and ’50s rhythm & blues. Their first release, a remake of “I Try” by the Young Tyrants, was for Voxx Records‘ Battle of the Garages, Volume 3 (which is now available on the Battle of the Garages Part Two CD). In the spring of 1985 they recorded their first LP, Every Mother’s Nightmare, for Lee Joseph’s Dionysus Records at West Beach Studios in Los Angeles. Lee Joseph produced it with a lot of input from Robert Butler and sound engineering by Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion). The album was finally released about a year later. In the summer of 1986 and spring of 1987 the Fables had two more recording sessions, this time at South Coast Studios in Santa Ana with David Carey producing. Eleven songs from these session were later compiled for their second LP, Aesop’s Apocalypse, released in early 1989, about a year after the band split up.
SONIC NIGHTMARES #18
Hosts: Gringo Starr, Reverend Beat-Man, Brother Panti-Christ & El Tiki

What makes this episode extra special may not be the fact that it’s a whopping 90 minutes long or that it happens to be our one-year anniversary on GaragePunk.com, but that we are joined by guest hosts Brother Panti-Christ and El Tiki from the original Sonic Nightmares radio show. In an attempt to bring them back into the fold permanently, The Reverend Beat-Man and co-sponsor, Gringo Starr, have founded a 12-step therapy program - Sonic Nightmares Anonymous®! Listen to the sound of grown men weeping as our two long lost soul mates are granted the serenity to accept the things they cannot change and embrace the evil turntables once again. Free coffee and donuts will be provided along with tracks by The Knee Jerk Reactions, The Crawdaddys, The Wimple Winch, Howlin’ Wolf, Mickey Hampshire, The Madcowgirl Disease and a bonus set of Turkish Psyche-Folk!

THE 12 STEPS:

1. We admitted we were powerless over the power of Rock and Roll - that our lives are unmanageable without it.

2. Came to believe that certain musical recordings from the mid '60's are greater than ourselves and could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the 'Punk' ethic as we understand it.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of our record collections.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact number of first issue pressings of Easter Everywhere we own.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all noticeable effects of hair loss.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our CD's from the top shelf to under the bed.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed preaching about Garage Punk, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would not injure their musical sensibilities or those of others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory of what is truly in our record collection and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with Jeff Kopper as we understand Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to Garage Punkers and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

*PLAYLIST NOTES BY REVEREND BEAT-MAN

Pirate love – the lonely streets ( from the voodoo rhythm album , black
vodoun space blues, they are from Norway Oslo, the new fresh garage punk
explosion just begun

Movie Star Junkies – lucky horse ( from the voodoo rhythm album Melville
that is out now, the singer stefano also plays in the in the red band
kraken.. MSJ are from Torino italy

The Guilty Hearts – glassell park (from the voodoo rhythm album pearls
before swine that comes out in December 2008, new recordings with a Bass
player !!)

Chuck Higgins – Motorhead Baby (on rolling rock records, recorded by
legendary Rony Weiser in 1974 on the Bass is Ray Campi.. I think that’s
where the Motorhead has the name from.. the whole album is a completely
blast.. rolling rock was way beyont time back in the early 70’s I think
with the whole retro rockabilly movement in the end of the 70’s..)

Lynn Hope – more bounce to the ounce ( saxophonograph records, ok I took
the ‘hit’ from the album ha ha ha but he’s actually hit was song of the
wanderer may some of you are familiar with that song or tenderly….
he’s a African American, from Ohio wearing a Turban and was famous for
his Bar Walk.. a wild man on the thenor saxophone.. and he was a true
believer in the Koran as well where he did studies and went to mecca and
all that crap

Bob Freedman and Orchestra – Tombstone Blues (it’s on the rock’n’roll
the untold story compilation out on rockafellar records from the vol5)
fucking great song.. and it’s the x-rated version of this song…

Andre Williams with the Inspirations – jailhouse Blues ((it’s on the
rock’n’roll the untold story compilation out on rockafellar records from
the vol5)

The Fugs – Dirty Old Man ( self released album has no label from 1966… I
don’t say anything about the fugs.. everybody should know them..)

A Cads – steal your heart ( thorns records, 1966 they ase from south
Africa and this song is from their 2nd album hungry for love)
http://www.rock.co.za/files/acads.html

Genesis – in the beginning (Decca 1969, yea.. those genesis with this
stupid drummer I don’t even wanna mention the name.. but this album is
without him.. may that’s why it’s good… a psyche rock classic man !!!
with ultra crazy peter gabriel

Roy and the Devil’s motorcycle – I had a dream ( from the voodoo rhythm
album because of women, they are a classic incredible band out of my
home town.. they are just recording a new album for voodoo rhythm but
this song is from the latest one

Fischer Z – berlin (fame records, they wanted to be the big shit in the
early 80’s area with lots of publishity and stuff.. but never actually
jumped on the train exept the wanna be intellectual music journalists
from the rolling stone magazine and other shit papers, but berlin is a
great song I think

John Lee Hooker – 714 Blues ( ABC records.. it’s actually recorded in
1971, but overdubbed in 1973 with a funky bass you know.. but still
fucking fresh, sounds like jimmy castor punch .. and believe it or not
joe cocker does percussion on some of the songs on this album.. ha ha ha
and even sings a duet with hooker.. but this sucks.. I think this album
shows perfect how fresh this ‘new’ sound funk was.. band is perfect I
think, and it has the worst record cover ever made

Utah Smith – take a trip (it’s from a fantastic Compilation on
Mississippi records, they are a record store in Portland and only carry
Vinyl records.. and they have this fantastic record label where they put
out mostly gospel music.. this is Reverend Utah Smith a legend it’s
own.. use to fly as a angel over the head of the people in the church..
of course on a rope ha ha ha… and playing guitar of course…

Washington Phillips – what are they doing in heaven today ? as well on
Mississippi records is this preacher playing on a self made organ bell
instrument recordings are from the mid 20’s

Big Jay McNelly – Road House Boogie (saxophonograph records , talking
about tenor Sax Maniac then Big Jay is the man.. true out of control
live shows and still do tours around the world.. and still… the wildest
of all tenor sax players in the universe !!

Nathan Abshire – pine grove blues ( on swallow records ,also covered my
voodoo rhythms own mama rosin, this song is also famous under the name ‘
au negrese’ recordings are made in the mid 30’s

Roy Orbison – Domino ( this is on a strange mid 60’s compilation calls
hullabaloo au go go.. and it sounds that there’s kinda strange
percussion in the song, like a tambourine that is not on the original
sun recording..i kinda like it.. also the horn section that was added..
the label is design records.

Last episode’s concept of Beat-Man moderating the show by telephone while in outer space has now mutated into a cheesy old-time radio serial, Orson Wellesian teenage alien invasion, science fiction variety hour-type thing. But don’t be fooled by all the bells and whistles (or all the echo)! This episode highlights some of the greatest punk tracks of all time (in our opinion, of course)! Featuring cuts by The Dead Boys, Zackary Thaks, The Damned, Suicide, Pop Rivets, The Seeds, The Velvet Underground and Hasil Adkins!
This episode is dedicated to our fellow GaragePunk.com podcaster, Mr. Dan Electreau. Hey man, the words “flying saucer” were never uttered in this podcast (with the exception of The Rezillos).
The Reverend Beat-Man takes the wheel this episode, producing the podcast through a telephone from the Voodoo Rhythm Records Headquarters. Expect scratchy 78s, Blues, ’60s Euro-pop, trash, instrumental and anything else Beat-Man has found at the thrift shop lately. For mature audiences only!
