With the passage of Measure H, SVUSD is required to form a Citizens’ Oversight Committee and is seeking interested community volunteers to participate on this committee.
The primary charge of the Oversight Committee is to inform the public about the expenditure of bond revenues and to ensure these revenues are spent for the purposes described in Measure H. Members are asked to serve a two-year term.
The Citizens’ Oversight Committee is required to have representatives from the following:
One member active in a business organization representing the business community located within the District.
One member active in a senior citizens’ organization.
One member active in a bona fide taxpayers’ organization.
One member who is the parent or guardian of a child enrolled in the
District.
One member who is the parent or guardian of a child enrolled in the
District and who is active in a parent-teacher organization, such as the
PTA or school site council.
Two other members, selected from the public at large.

Bilingual Innovator Selected to lead the High School into a Progressive New Era
Superintendent Louann Carlomagno and the Sonoma Valley Unified School District proudly announced today the selection of Kathleen Hawing as Principal of Sonoma Valley High School. Ms. Hawing brings a depth of experience to her position, including a distinguished teaching career coupled with her recent administrative accomplishments. Ms. Hawing is a familiar face at Sonoma Valley High School and throughout the school district. Among the highlights of Ms. Hawing’s career are her work with inner city youth in the Watts area of Los Angeles where she began her teaching work, plus the key role she played in the establishment of the Dual Immersion Program at Flowery Elementary School, and her strong leadership in establishing and directing the College and Career Center at Sonoma Valley High School prior to ascending to the her current position as Vice Principal.
“Kathleen Hawing is highly respected throughout our school district. She shares our vision of an outstanding high school where all students will thrive and develop a love of learning as they prepare for the world of college and careers,” exclaimed Sonoma Valley Unified School District Superintendent Louann Carlomagno, who added, “Kathleen is well prepared for her position and she will have the strong support of our staff, students, families and our community as she moves into the office of the principal.”
Ms. Hawing earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Economics and in Latin American Studies at UCLA. She also received a Master of Arts degree in Latin American Studies from UCLA and spent two years studying abroad in Mexico and Brazil. She possesses a multiple subject bilingual/cross cultural emphasis teaching credential; single subject Spanish and Economics teaching credentials; and an administrative services credential.
Ms. Hawing began teaching elementary school in 1985 in the Los Angeles Unified School District, and also worked in the Lennox School District and the Ventura Unified School District at both the site and district level prior to moving to Sonoma. She began in the Sonoma Valley Unified School District in 1997 as a bilingual fourth grade teacher and then as the site Title VII Coordinator for the Dual Immersion Program at Flowery Elementary School. Following those assignments, she moved to Sonoma Valley High School in 2003 where she taught Spanish and served as the school’s Work Experience teacher. Additionally, she has served as Academic Coordinator, and the College & Career Center Coordinator.
In September 2012 Ms. Hawing became a vice principal at SVHS replacing Kathy Summers, who retired at the end of the 2011-2012 school year. She has been working with the two other vice principals, Paul Tuohy and Andrew Ryan, in providing academic support and guidance to students as well coordinating the implementation the common core curriculum, the development of academic pathways, and the oversight of Freshman Teams. Ms. Hawing and the administrative team continue to focus on and promote the District’s goal of making all students College and Career ready by graduation.
Ms. Hawing participated in an extensive interview process for the position. On Day One of the interview process, candidates were interviewed by two separate panels of stakeholders including parents, teachers, site classified staff, district and site administrators, community members, the superintendent, and students. Additionally, the interview process evaluated each candidate’s ability to observe and critique a classroom lesson, to respond to writing prompts within a timed setting, and to manage multiple/competing tasks. On Day Two of the interview process, the candidates met on the SVHS campus and met with four different groups: community members, certificated and classified staff, students, and parents. Those meetings provided each group and the candidate a series of opportunities to engage in a dialogue about issues relevant to the campus and on assets the candidate would bring to the school. Based on those interviews, the Superintendent selected Ms. Hawing as the candidate best fit to move the school forward into the 2013-2014 school year.

La Superintendente Louann Carlomagno y el Distrito Escolar Unificado del Valle de Sonoma se enorgullecen de anunciar el día de hoy la selección de Kathleen Hawing como Directora de la Escuela Preparatoria del Valle de Sonoma. La Sra. Hawing trae consigo una vasta experiencia, incluyendo una carrera distinguida en la docencia junto con sus logros administrativos más recientes. La Sra. Hawing es un rostro familiar en la Escuela Preparatoria del Valle de Sonoma y en el distrito escolar. Entre las cosas sobresalientes de la carrera de la Sra. Hawing se encuentra su trabajo con los jóvenes de barrios marginados en el área Watts de Los Ángeles donde ella empezó su carrera como profesora, además del papel clave que ella tuvo en el establecimiento del Programa de Inmersión Dual en la Escuela Primaria Flowery, y su fuerte liderazgo en el establecimiento y dirección del Centro Vocacional y Universitario en la Escuela Preparatoria del Valle de Sonoma antes de ascender a su posición actual como Subdirectora.

La Sra. Hawing obtuvo su Licenciatura en Economía y Estudios Latinoamericanos en UCLA. Ella también obtuvo su Maestría en Estudios Latinoamericanos en UCLA y paso dos años estudiando en el exterior, en México y Brasil. Ella posee una credencial de maestra de varias materias con un énfasis en la instrucción bilingüe/de varias culturas; credenciales de instrucción en español y economía; y una credencial de servicios administrativos.
La Sra. Hawing empezó como maestra en una escuela primaria en 1985 en el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Los Ángeles, y también trabajó en el Distrito Escolar Lennox y el Distrito Escolar Unificado en Ventura en un nivel tanto escolar como del distrito antes de mudarse a Sonoma. Ella empezó en el Distrito Escolar Unificado del Valle de Sonoma en 1997 como una maestra bilingüe del cuarto grado y luego como la Coordinadora de Title VII para el Programa de Inmersión Dual en la Escuela Primaria Flowery. Después de
esos puestos, ella pasó la Escuela Preparatoria del Valle de Sonoma en el 2003 donde fue maestra de español y sirvió como la maestra de Experiencia Laboral. Adicionalmente, ella ha servido como Coordinadora Académica, y Coordinadora del Centro Vocacional y Universitario.
En septiembre de 2012, la Sra. Hawing se convirtió en la subdirectora de SVHS reemplazando a Kathy Summers, quien se jubiló a finales del año escolar 2011-2012. Ella ha estado trabajando con los otros dos subdirectores, Paul Tuohy y Andrew Ryan, para proveer el apoyo académico y orientación a los estudiantes, así como en la coordinación de la implementación del currículo básico común, el desarrollo de las rutas académicas, y la supervisión de los Equipos Freshman. La Sra. La Sra. Hawing participó en un proceso extensivo de entrevistas para esta posición. En el primer día del proceso de las entrevistas, los candidatos fueron entrevistados por dos paneles separados de personas que incluían padres de familia, maestros, personal clasificado de la escuela, administradores del distrito y la escuela, miembros de la comunidad, la superintendente y los estudiantes. Adicionalmente, el proceso de entrevistas evaluó la habilidad de cada candidato para observar y criticar una lección en el salón de clases, responder a direcciones escritas dentro de un periodo de tiempo específico, y manejar trabajos variados/opuestos. En el segundo día del proceso de la entrevista, los candidatos vinieron al plantel de SVHS y se reunieron con cuatro grupos diferentes: miembros de la comunidad, personal certificado y clasificado, estudiantes, y padres de familia. Estas reuniones proporcionaron a cada grupo y a los candidatos con una serie de oportunidades para participar en el dialogo acerca de asuntos relevantes al plantel escolar y las aptitudes que traería cada candidato a la escuela. Basado en esas entrevistas, la Superintendente seleccionó a la Sra. Hawing como la candidata más apropiada para que la escuela siga adelante en el año escolar 2013-2014.
The May Board Meeting has been changed to the 7th at the Community Meeting Room, the 14th is canceled, due to Senior Projects.
During the week of March 11, 2013 there is a change to the menu. The Pork Chop Patty will be served on the 14th of March and the Chicken Tenderloins will be served on the 11th of March.

At the March 12, 2013 Board meeting, the Board agreed to return the 5 remaining furlough days to the 2012-2013 school calendar. Both bargaining units (VMTA & CSEA) and the District have agreed to MOU’s regarding the return of the furlough days and are in the process of presenting it to their respective memberships for ratification.
The following days will return as student instructional days: March 29, April 1, May 3, May 24. June 3 will return as a staff-only work day.
