The deal to buy out its Swedish partner gives Sony ownership of certain handset patents held by Ericsson and will enable it to integrate the joint venture's output with its own range of products and content.

"We can more rapidly and more widely offer consumers smart phones, laptops, tablets and televisions that seamlessly connect with one another and open up new worlds of online entertainment," Sony's chairman and chief executive Sir Howard stringer said in a statement.

Until now Sony's tablets, games and other consumer electronics devices have been kept separate from the phones sold and created by Sony Ericsson.

"Since television sales are set to fall, smart phones look to become more important products for Sony since their sales are rising globally and they will probably become the main device people use to connect to the internet," said analyst Nobuo Kurahashi of Mizuho Investors’ Securities in Tokyo.

Smart phone sales have been surging since Apple rolled out its first iPhone in 2007 and despite a slowdown in the overall consumer electronics market the fast-growing demand for smartphones is expected to continue.
The takeover of Sony Ericsson by the Japanese group had long been talked of, and a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters this month that a deal was in the offing.

"Sony now has all the components to compete with Samsung and Apple. The big question now is ... can it execute?" said Pete Cunningham of industry consultancy Canalys.
"Based on history I am skeptical but I would not say it cannot be done," he added.
Founded in 2001, Sony Ericsson initially thrived with an array of camera and music phones, but later lost out in the smart phone race.

"Sony had to make this deal as it had run out of options, but integration challenges could prove to be a major hurdle," said Ben Wood, head of research at London-based mobile consultancy CCS Insight.
"As a major consumer electronics player lack of mobile assets had become a liability for Sony, particularly when compared with Samsung, whose telecommunication business creates nearly half of its profits," he said.
Ericsson said the deal provides Sony with a broad intellectual property cross-licensing agreement covering all the Japanese company's products and services as well as ownership of "five essential patent families relating to wireless handset technology".

"The only value Ericsson added to the venture was patents," said Cunningham.
However, in comparison Nokia, the world's largest cell phone vendor by volume, controls some 10,000 patents. Shares in Ericsson, whose main strength lies in its wireless network equipment business, were up 4.7% at 69.8 crowns by 0916 GMT.

We'll start this review by trying to give details what the Sony Ericsson xperia X10 mini is in a only some words. So, you know the Xperia X10, right? Well, the X10 mini has nothing to do with it. It's the embodiment of the totally opposite concept that is behind the X10. If we can describe this through numbers, instead of the massive 4-inch screen of the Xperia X10, you get a 2.55-inch one. Get it? It's a totally different experience. That said, we think the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 minis is a very intimate Android smartphone that has a beautiful design and very little flaws, trying to once again prove the ever popular idea that size doesn't really matter.

What's in the box:

• Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini handset
• 5 additional back panels (pearl white, silver, lime, pink and red)
• 2 GB microSD
• Li-Pol Battery (non-replaceable)
• Stereo headset w/ mic
• microUSB cable
• Travel charger
• User manual

Introduction and Design:

As of present, the market isn’t really choke full of compact Android phones. When you look at the existing lineup, you see the rather large products like the HTC Incredible, HTC EVO 4G and the Google Nexus One, as well as mainstream sizes like the HTC DROID ERIS in the States and the Hero in Europe. However, a truly small device is nowhere to be seen. Maybe it was this market gap that Sony Ericsson has noticed when coming up with the idea of the Xperia X10 mini we first saw at this year’s MWC.
As the name implies, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini is a scaled down version of the Xperia X10. In contrast to what Nokia did with the N97 mini however, Sony Ericsson has gone to extremes here, and the X10 mini is now one of the tiniest smart handsets of all times. It has kept the company's “human curvature” design with smooth curves and soft-touch coating on the back, which makes it pleasant to hold. Moreover it is relatively thick with its 16mm so it does not feel as miniscule to handle as it actually is.

You may find the screen surprisingly small – only 2.55 inches with QVGA resolution. The image quality is fine and since the touch technology is capacitive, using the display is a fun experience, except in bright sunlight where, as usual, it's rather hard to tell what's on there.

At the front below the screen you have the X10 family trademark chrome tapered line, divided in three sections for the usual Android menu, home and back keys. The volume keys are on the right sharing the side with the camera button. All the keys feel nice, with distinct enough click, including the power/lock button on the top. On the back you have a 5MP camera with autofocus and an LED flash, as well as the loudspeaker.

The connectors you’ll find at the bottom of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini are standard microUSB and 3.5mm audio jack. We also got five additional panel colors in the box to toy with, but word on the street is they will be carrier or region dependent, so not all five will come in all boxes. Even so, with pearl white, silver, lime, pink and red battery covers you can easily swap the looks if you get bored by the munchkin’s Men in Black appearance.

So, as a design the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini is a sweet little smartphone. Although it isn’t introduced as a fashion device, it does have its own sex appeal that attracts attention. It’s incredibly small, to the point where it becomes just slightly inconvenient in bigger male hands. However we wouldn't go as far as calling it a lady's phone; it's just cute. Besides, the Xperia X10 mini pro (the QWERTY variant of the X10 mini) will add the needed size, as it will be a bit higher (and just a millimeter thicker). So, yes, we quite like the X10 mini’s design, and no, we are not pansies.

Xperia mini pro Android powered smart phone

For easy messaging There is no alternative Experia mini pro. Planned exclusively to work on Sony Ericsson products, the channel substitute the "My Apps" link found on the landing page of the market. According to Sony Ericsson's blog, this spot will be used to offer special content in the form of games and apps that best improve the experience for the company's devices.

Starting off, Sony Ericsson is offering plug-ins for itsTimescape and camera function, but the ultimate plan is to offer other developers a stage to sponsor their hard work. Users are encouraged to suggest dreams and response to help shape the future of the channel.

It's value pointing out that since this channel is transporter dependent, some clients might not see this characteristic. Many providers like to tailor the Android Market around their own services and apps, but consumers who purchase a Sony Ericsson phone straight from the producer should see the new channel.
Pictures and details leaked onto the Internet this week confirm the presence of the Walkman 3.0 software and a 3.2 megapixel camera. Here’s the rundown of everything we know about it so far:

A built-in accelerometer.
An M2 memory card slot for plenty of media storage.
A 3.2 megapixel camera.
An FM radio.

Continuing with the decidedly non-geeky codename theme shared with the Sony Ericsson W902, the W595 is also known as Linda. Its slide form looks to be an evolution of the slick W580, but perhaps slightly thinner judging by the pictures. With the Walkman 3.0 software comes Shake Control seen on other Sony Ericsson handsets allowing track advance and shuffle to be operated by a flick of the phone, however, word is the accelerometer is a ‘3D’ one as opposed to the ‘2D’ in the W580. What this means will all become clear with the official announcement.

Also visible in the leaked pictures are stereo speakers, one above the earpiece and one on the base of the handset and the return of the intricate patterns on the base of the slider panel. Included in the A2 operating system software will be Google Maps.
Sony Ericsson 25 Jan announced the launch of two new mobile phones, the R300 Radio and R306 Radio, both designed to deliver a credible radio-listening experience to a global audience, and ideally suited to emerging markets such as India.

"The R300 Radio and R306 Radio allow you to tune-in to your favourite music shows or sports reports, across both AM and FM broadcasts," said Howard Lewis, Vice President and Head of Entry Level Products at Sony Ericsson. "They certainly look and sound the part, offering a radio-inspired design and feature set on a choice of either a candy bar or clamshell phone."

True radio design
Dedicated radio speakers and preset channel buttons
Loud sound
3D sound enhancement and volume boost for noisy environments
AM/FM Frequencies
Tune-in to your favourite station

True radio design
Both of these new phones are designed to have a clear radio look-and-feel. Sit either phone on its side and let the radio blast out through the dedicated loudspeaker…in stereo in the case of the R306 Radio.

Preset buttons on the front of both the R300 Radio and R306 Radio let you switch easily between your favourite stations. It takes just one click to boost the volume when you want to share music on the radio or the live action from the sports ground.

These two phones really let you get the most from the radio. Set it as your alarm clock or record the final moments of your team's winning match and play back the commentary again and again. You can even record a clip of a song and use it as your ringtone.

Who sang that song?
TrackID™ is now a familiar feature on many of Sony Ericsson's high tier phones. It now comes as standard on both the R300 Radio and R306 Radio, turning listeners into instant music experts! Record a clip of a song from an external source, such as a sound system in a coffee shop or bar, and find out within seconds who sang it, the name of the track and which album it is from. All in just one click.

Play it loud!
With the R300 Radio you can listen-in via the stereo headphones provided or 'play it loud' thanks to the high performance speaker integrated into the phone. Switch on 3D sound enhancement or volume boost with the dedicated Audio Enhancer key on the phone.

True radio experience
The R306 Radio opens up into a clamshell with two integrated stereo speakers that face the listener. Again featuring the Audio Enhancer key, you can activate volume boost when listening to the radio through the speakers or 3D sound enhancement when you have the stereo headset plugged in, ensuring a first-class radio listening experience even when it is noisy around you. See which station you are tuned-in to on the phone's external display.

Perfect harmony
Both phones feature Bluetooth™ technology, allowing you to handle your phone calls handsfree with optional accessories such as the Bluetooth™ Headset HBH-PV703.

The R300 Radio offers a built-in VGA camera and the R306 Radio boasts a step-up to a 1.3 megapixel camera on-board. So whether you are listening to the radio or not, these two new phones are set to hit the right note.

The R300 Radio will launch in two colours: Antique Copper and Steel Black. It is a GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 phone that will be available in selected markets from Q2 2008. The R300a Radio is a GSM/GPRS 850/1800/1900 phone, available in the same timeframe.
