This Week I Have Mostly Been Listening To... Perfume Genius + Pinterest, new albums, videos from The Ghosts & White Rabbits

You know the part in the movie where something crap or challenging happens to the protagonist and they have to pull out all the stops to save the rain forest/get the girl/ start their vegan bakery and be a total success? And you know how there are rarely scenes in movies where very little happens, the protagonist's a bit despondent for a bit then the plot kicks back in again? Well, life's not a movie - mine isn't anyway and some weeks (okay, this week) are like the scenes that get cut from movies for not enough happening to engage the audience.

After stubbornly refusing to read any press releases or reviews before I'd listened to it, my hype wellies well and truly clogged (nice mental image, you're welcome) - I finally mooched over to the Matador Records website to read the blurb on Perfume Genius' sophomore album. I'd listened to and enjoyed Learning but didn't get all moist over it like the majority of my muso (mostly boys) mates. With hindsight, at the time I was in a period where my appetite for new music/content was far more voracious (not leaving much time to digest). The timing of his second album, Perfume Genius – Put Your Back N 2 It then has been perfect, and, frankly, the label's description of it: "It’s a gorgeous soundtrack for anyone trying to keep it together in everyday life, and about moving forward." felt serendipitous for me this week so I'm making it my Album of The Week. It's not a miserable album at all, but if like me you've been in a contemplative mood, it's an ideal accompaniment - give it a whirl if you haven't already.

Here's some other albums released in the past couple of weeks that I've listened to and enjoyed. Note the Gotye album's back up on Spotify for all you STIUTK fans. I wasn't massively bothered by the Sleigh Bells album, disappointingly but I know some of you'd appreciate the link so it's there anyway. Special note to the Islands album that came a close second for AoW and the Kitsune compilations which are always a joy on the ears and probably perfect for Friday afternoons...

Dr. Dog – Be The Void Hospitality – Hospitality Azari & III – Azari & III John Talabot – Fin Sleigh Bells – Reign of Terror Gotye – Making Mirrors Islands – A Sleep & A Forgetting Speech Debelle – Freedom Of Speech André – Kitsuné Parisien II (Deluxe Edition)

Accurately described by my twitter buddy @behyped as 'digital popcorn', Pinterest is soooooooooooooooo hot this week, all the techies are getting all excited that they can pin all their favorite infograms in one place, Twitter is alight. What is it? Basically you get to catalog stuff you like and share it in that special social media kinda way. Indeed digital popcorn is on the money - lacking in nutrition but completely moreish. I have been using it for fantasy shopping purposes which my bank balance is thanking me for, I can tell you. Let your inner OCD rage and enjoy it before the brands start working it to sell stuff and ruin it as is the social media way it seems. Am I on Pinterest? But of course, hit us up with your profile links below in the comments section, if you like.

And finally, I couldn't decide between The Ghosts video or the White Rabbits one (which gives Miike Snow a run for their money on the surreal vibe) so I'm including them both. Soopsworld 2.0: Volume Eleven will be here on Monday.

This Week I Have Mostly Been Listening To... Those Darlins

Rewind to September 2010, it was back in the days of me prowling around Hype Machine like a hungry cheetah on the hunt for fresh meat (go with it), I was wading through what felt like an ocean of chillwave and suddenly Ding, Ding, Ding! I spot Rollo & Grady's got a track up called Night Jogger by some band called Those Darlins. I clicked because a) by that point I had established I liked his taste 90% of the time (rare) and b) Night Jogger was a weird title so I was intrigued. It turns out Those Darlins could probably sing the contents of the phonebook and make it sound really f*cking cool and, frankly, filthy.

Those Darlins – Night Jogger

I quote "Damn, this is tight. Those Darlins are ready to take it to the next level" - I'm fairly sure this is about as close as Rollo & Grady gets to when I spazz out over a song and demand everyone in the vicinity listens to it IMMEDIATELY because it's AWESOME.

Oh and if you hadn't noticed from the video, 3 of them are GIRLS and they're attractive AND they can play. Will they be asked endlessly in interviews about how they feel about being women, like, in a male dominated industry? Yeah, probably. Will they be asked if they consider themselves feminists? Yeah. Will they be asked how they feel about any female musician that ever existed and if they're an influence? Yeah probably. Will they be asked if they're bringing back Girl/Grrrrrl Power? Oh man, I hope not but it's quite likely. We all sympathize the suffering they will have endure for their art I'm sure but after hearing Night Jogger and anything else by them I could find on the internet (mainly scratchy live videos),I just wanted to hear them play live, now 'o' clock.

So tracks here and there popped up throughout 2011 but no sign of the album over here in the UK. I thought it was game over. Doomed to waiting months for import cds to arrive from the US and squinting at scratchy YouTube videos at best... gutted.

Then, last week, Ollie Russian posted this and I beamed - this meant they were coming. Lo and behold, DiS reviewed the album this week, details of the tour are out and so, hopefully, it starts...

Here's the album on Spotify for you to try before you buy, here's the details of their European tour.

Volume Ten + New Albums from Tennis, Sharon Van Etten, Lindstrom, Air, Field Music & More

Soopsworld 2.0: Volume Ten

Volume Ten featuring Sharon Van Etten, Field Music, Wye Oak, Boy Friend, The 2 Bears, Django Django, Gotye, The Maccabees and so much more...

We all have stuff we geek out over, having interests and passions are another way of proving that we’re human beings with brains and hearts, the way I see it. And sure, some of us pursue and engage with those passions more than others but we all have something. As with mental health (I mention this coincidentally, sort of), there is a dial we can measure roughly the extremity of music geekery - with full on fanatical geeks with catalogue brains at 11 and people that buy Pan Pipes Orchestra Plays The Rolling Stones cds at 1.5. I’m probably an 8, the guys that run the sites on my Ears I Trust page are all 10s I reckon, we all have social skills and friends and stuff – go past a high 11 (there will always be extremities that go off the dial) and we’re in the music version of Sheldon from Big Bang Theory territory.

What’s your point, Soops? Basically my friend Scott was so disgusted with my initial ambivalent reaction to the new Field Music album that he informed me that until I followed up my ambivalence with the explanation that I must have maxxed out on caffeine that morning, our friendship was in jeopardy. High 9 behaviour I think you may agree but he’s not like that all the time and in fairness, when we worked together, I probably looked at him incredulously when he shrugged in reaction to an album I thought was AMAZING. I don’t know, maybe people that are really into food get judgemental on their friends if they don’t share a recipe in the same esteem or something but it does seem to be particularly a music thing. Have you looked at your friend like they’re from another planet because they didn’t ‘get’ a band you loved? I suppose with music there is such a capacity to make it our own, to entwine it with who we are – when our friends don’t share the same enthusiasm it makes us question ourselves and even the friendships, particularly if it was music that connected us in the first place.

Thankfully these moments of being judgemental are fleeting amongst my muso friends but I still have an unfortunate wiring to believe that a person can’t be that bad if they like such and such a band. Unfortunately this isn’t true. I hate to be the one to break it to you but there are arseholes out there that are, *sharp intake of breath*, White Rabbits fans. (picture me shaking my head gravely muttering “But he liked ‘Percussion Gun’ how is this possible?” and you’re not far off)

Back to Field Music, on the second, third and fourth playing of Field Music’s Plumb, I appreciated it more with each listen (a grower indeed) and now for me it has an essence of A Day In The Life which is my all time favourite Beatles song. And if Scott’s not happy with that, well we agree on Django Django so I’m sure we’ll be fine.

All of this is pretty beside the point anyway because despite listening to all the below albums, you can probably see from my Highly Sophisticated Rating System, which was my favourite BY A MILE. Sharon Van Etten’s album is going to be on repeat for me for some time, it’s just gorgeous. Incidentally, when I was playing the Air album, my mother boomed through the door that I should put up a sign when I’m meditating – make of that what you will...

Soopsworld 2.0:Volume Nine

A couple of weeks ago I strolled into the village chemist to stock up on Rimmel lip gloss or whatever to be greeted by the chemist’s assistant’s brand new experimentation with hair dye. “Directions Apple Green, eh? Ah yes I know it well”, I piped up with a grin. “How do YOU know about DIRECTIONS?!!” she squeaked and momentarily I felt a hundred years old. I’m not sure how long Directions have been going but it was pretty much a right of passage round my way to stain your scalp a gloriously unnatural colour a least a couple of times. With dark brown hair, I was never brave enough to do the full peroxide burn to get the true Directions cartoon neon hue (until uni with a disastrous attempt at skunk stripes – I was straight to ASDA for the black hair-dye within the hour) but I still had the hair-dying towel that had a whole spectrum from bright reds to purple to pink to dark blue.

When the Geordie bird on last year's X Factor that sounded like she smokes 60 Benson a day got her hair dyed pink I did think momentarily that it was the end of the world but that’s fashion for you, I guess. There will always be the ones that don’t do the research and really think they invented whatever trend they’re rocking.

These days the chemist’s assistant nods conspiratorially every time I walk past, devotees of Directions past and present in a sea of Rampant Raisin and Mahogany. Volume Nine is a tribute to my days of Directions-dyed hair, nose-rings, spoon jewellery, Newcastle Brown and having the strongest ankles on earth after dancing for hours in super-heavy para-boots. Enjoy.

Soopsworld 2.0: Volume Eight

First of all, you might want to observe the tag list for today's post - there is a LOT of bands featured today and that's on top of this week's lovingly curated playlist, Volume Eight (remember, you can show your appreciation by subscribing to it on Spotify or 'Liking' or hey, go crazy, do both. I won't take it as a come-on, I promise). Basically my New Tunes folder (yes it's nerdy but it saves you trawling time for the good stuff so less of the sniggering) was heaving this week, it was like Music Land woke up from hibernating over the holidays or something.

After trawling through (and enjoying for the most part) this week's releases I scooped up all sorts. Highlights include the 2 Bears album which I sent the link round my lot like a flash (always a good sign), the new Chairlift album, staring at the new Miike Snow video (on the YouTube playlist below) for some time convinced the subjects would blink then giving up realising it was just the audio (shame, was all over that as a concept), suggesting to my friend Scott on Twitter that Milagres sounded like they were on microbiotic diets (I liked the album, they just sound a bit earnest, Scott was more preoccupied with Django Django as it turned out) and Ollie Russian putting me on to Le Femme who are just ACE. I'm quite excited at the prospect of their stage wear because they sound like it'll be impressive. They're on the Volume 8 playlist as well so you can swoosh your shoulder-pads around or whatever it is you do when you listen to effing splendid music.

Did I mention I made a playlist?

Stream Chairlift’s new album ‘Something’ here at KCRW before it comes out on Monday Listen to the 2 Bears ‘Be Strong’ here (out 30th January) Preview Pulled Apart By Horses’ ‘Tough Love’ here Stream First Aid Kit’s album ‘The Lion’s Roar’ on NPR Where you’ll also find Nada Surf’s ‘The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy’

Most Miserable Day Of The Year You Say? New Tunes For You...

For someone that openly enjoys putting things in neat little piles and alphabetizing anything in sight, you'd be forgiven for assuming I'm an enthusiastic listificator. Not so. The only sort of list I can get enthusiastic about, unsurprisingly, are shopping lists - music ones especially. Here are my selections from this week's new releases (and some from last week cos they staggered them going on Spotify) for you to join in getting your ears round should you so desire.

The Big Pink – Future This Enter Shikari – A Flash Flood Of Colour Howler – America Give Up Diagrams – Black Light Tribes – Baby FOE – Bad Dream Hotline Milagres – Glowing Mouth The Maccabees – Given To The Wild Casiokids – Aabenbaringen over aaskammen Guided By Voices – Let's Go Eat The Factory

Finally, Lana Del Rey performed on Saturday Night Live in the US (kind of a big deal) on the weekend after A LOT of hype and was a bit limp. Quite a lot of people on Twitter were outraged and stuff. Even Juliette Lewis which is surprising because I'm pretty sure she's not promoting an album or a film so why does she give a sh*t? Overall I find the fact that people were outraged at such a thing really quite entertaining and am still rooting for the whole thing to be revealed as a Josie & The Pussycats rip-off plot but it looks like I'm in for a wait. Here's the performance for you to observe if you are curious/give a sh*t/are bored/are avoiding being depressed because it's January 16th.

Soopsworld 2.0: Volume Seven

I quite fancied 'elegance' being my buzz word for 2012, y'know - re-do my various web presences in minimalist, stylish layouts and just saying stuff that was poignant that made people want to immediately note it down in an "a-ha, SO true!" sort of way. It's not going to happen anytime soon but hey, good to break anything resembling a New Year's resolution within the first fortnight as a rule, I find.

The above compilation (alright, playlist with visual accompaniment... alright, playlist with nice picture of the dog) is mostly new(ish) stuff, including stuff that both made the BBC Sound Of 2012 top 5 and stuff that SHOULD have made it in my opinion. After starting this year with flu watching back to back Poirot episodes (quite enjoyable actually, love that crazy Belgian), it's been a lethargic start to the year than can only build momentum as the year goes on (if it was stationary to start with, things can only improve quite frankly). Onwards...

Oh and someone on Twitter was banging on about Portlandia so I looked it up on Youtube = well it's funnier than New Girl, check it...

Cheerio

p.s

Stuck at home skint cos it's January? You'll be wanting Nigerian Idol, then

Prepping for your office Christmas party? Not having a Christmas party but fancy having your own anyway (yes, that's YOU, freelancers)? Already had your Christmas party and would like to re-write the memory somehow? Well, TA-DA - Volume Six is here! There are even at least 5 songs with 'dance' or 'dancing' in the title (usually a giveaway) and a vintage Beastie Boys number perfect for bogling to! You are very welcome.

In other news, well, you might have noticed the quietness in posts in this week. I've been busy and there's not that many new albums out. See last week's posts for Christmas albums and playlists if you're maxed out on Wizard, Mariah Carey & suchlike, though.

I'm not doing a best albums of 2011 list. Here's a link cloud full of albums (and 1 ep because he's not put his album out yet and I'm impatient), see if you can crack my highly sophisticated code to see which I liked more than others...

Yes I know, the artwork looks suspiciously like the type of shot you'd get from from one of those glass-bottom boat trips you do on holiday. Lo and behold, it IS - it's from a particularly surreal boat trip I took with my brother, the captain/tour guide was tenuously linking it to Finding Nemo ("Can you seeeee Neemoo? Is he under there? Is he over here?". Weren't no goddamn clown-fish off the Egyptian coast, unsurprisingly), My brother shudders to this day at the mortifying memory of me being dragged to the front to 'drive' the boat and getting death-stared by all the children that weren't picked. Ah yes, fond memories...

After Monday's new releases I soundtracked job applications and project plotting with relics from my 2011 folder (yes I have my albums filed, along with folders of playlists categorized neatly - andwut?) so far Frankie & The Heartstrings – Hunger The Dears – Degeneration Street The Strokes – Angles Beastie Boys – Hot Sauce Committee Part Two Chinese Man – Racing With the Sun Tune-Yards – W H O K I L L... Evidently I only got as far as the 'Spring 2011' folder within the 2011 folder.

I should probably do one of those Best Albums of 2011 things like a proper grown-up music blog - comment if you feel passionately that any particularly album should win such a prestigious title.

MIdweek Marvel: Miike Snow are Back

When I was at Sony, Miike Snow by far were my favourite band on the label (still are). As in I loved them so much I couldn't believe Sony as a big, middle of the road major, had managed to sign them. I was at their first Hoxton Bar & Grill gig (& deathstared the industry twats talking through their set behind me - they shut up), the underage Halloween 'ball' where the little sh*ts chucked glowsticks at them (Andrew Wyatt deadpanned: "If you're going to throw those things, can you at least connect them first?"), literally got teary with relief when the whole of the Scala crowd knew every single word to every song and managed 4 songs of their Glastonbury set in the blistering heat before I gave in and ran for shade.

I wasn't on their marketing team, their digital PR team, I didn't even do their royalties. I wasn't at their gigs because the label advised me to or there was buzz around them (there was), I just really f*cking loved that band. When you strip away the Likes, tweets, RTs, +1s, 'quirky' viral campaigns, contraversial videos and endless interviews all asking the same mundane questions, that's the whole point isn't it?

Miike Snow's second album is due March 2012.

Monday = New Releases: The Black Keys, Winehouse, The Roots & The Cure

It's Monday so that means another pile of albums to listen to should you so desire. Can't think why I haven't posted the links on a Monday before when I clearly am more fussed about linking people to music than trying to describe it.

SO on our collective musical To Do List to try before we buy we have:

The Black Keys - El Camino (on Grooveshark cos it's not on Spotify yet)

Amy Winehouse – Lioness: Hidden Treasures

The Roots – Undun

The Cure – Bestival Live 2011

There's also a post-humous Winehouse single, 'Our Day Will Come' out today. For me it feels too soon after her death to be rinsing what scraps of unreleased material she left behind but when is a tasteful time to scavenge through an artist's work who is no longer here to say whether they want it used or not? She's not the first artist to have this treatment and undoubtedly not the last, her pedestal has only been raised it's first few levels for now - over the years you can guarantee she'll be cranked up a few more feet each time as the tragic heroine icon: the re-issues of albums and singles, a remix album, a covers album, tribute concerts on her birthday and the anniversary of her death, virals made from home video/mobile phone footage, it will go on and on... Let's not even go there with what money-making plots bloody Blake's got up his sleeve, My Blake the Movie? It's only a matter of a time before some tw*t thinks putting out a 27 Club compilation is a great idea. let's face it.

I'm not sure I believe in an afterlife but if there is one, I hope Winehouse is haunting the f*ck out of all the vultures and the fakers that seem incapable of paying tribute to her with any sort of grace and having a right laugh doing it.

Alright, Seeing As It's December I'll mention the C-Word...

No not Azealia Bank's favourite c-word (212 = best song to do housework to ever btw), the other c-word that makes people go all crazed at this time of year, including with their choices of music.

Clunky segways aside, this particular muso is not really a fan of the Slade school of Christmas tunes until Christmas week... back to back Wizard/Slade/Mariah Carey in an office and it used to make me look to the heavens thanking whoever was up there for the invention of noise cancelling headphones. I accept that not everyone else shares my bah humbug attitude to festive trash so I figured I'd compromise with some indie Christmas album links for y'all. If you want a somewhere-in-the-middle kind of Christmas playlist then here's one of mine SoopyChristmas but it would appear that Christmas albums are, like, so hot right now, ranging from earnest-Christmas-aint-great-for-everyone with Smith & Burrows, sort-of-ironic-but-not-really Christmas pop with She & Him and then indie-f**k-it-chuck-in-zombies-tongue-in-cheek from Emmy The Great & Tim Wheeler.

I'll admit, much as I quite like a fair bit of Editors' stuff (the less said about Andy Burrows former band the better), I did think "Uh-oh, it's gonna be a bit panto-doomcore" when I saw the lead singer had made a Christmas record. Opening with In The Bleak Midwinter with Tom Smith on vocals is, well, as melodramatic as I feared but despite it's big entrance, Funny Looking Angels soon balances out into a really rather lovely record that I know I'll be playing throughout the winter. Yes, there's meloncholy round the edges but it's some welcome depth in such a traditionally fizzy season that can make you sometimes feel like you've overdosed on cr*p long before you reach the 25th. The track I've had on repeat is 'As The Snowflakes Fall' which is the first song I've heard in years that I'd make a Christmas number one if I had the power. The cover of Black's 'Wonderful Life' is a, sorry, cracker too - showing off Smith's voice in it's richness without leaning back into panto-drama territory. Oh and they cover the Flying Pickets which I could kiss them for.

Next we've got She & Him's 'A Very She & Him Christmas' it's undoubtedly cheesy Christmassy albeit dripping in hipster-irony I'm sure. Look it's alright, I found it a bit Christmas-by-numbers(and cashing in without a doubt, which I'm surprised at - I thought Zooey Deschanel's acting career was going rather well, surely she doesn't need the cash?) but it's fine to have on in the background while you remove your turkey innards or whatever.

I'm sorry, and all fairness to them, of the three albums I think Emmy The Great & Tim Wheeler have their tongues pushed furthest in their cheeks with 'This Is Christmas', they're sending the whole thing up and you can see their point, with the likes of X Factor dominating the charts at this time of year, why the hell not? It's not to my taste for the most part, despite liking both artists' stuff normally, but it's good fun and, like the She & Him record, fine to have on in the background and you fancy a change from the normal Christmas trash. Ho ho ho, etc etc.

p.s

All three albums + the Crocodiles/Dum Dum Girls Xmas single here in one playlist for your convenience:

Smith & Burrows/She & Him/Emmy The Great & Tim Wheeler/Crocodiles - Alt Christmas

So after posting some new albums for you to try out on Wednesday, we get to Friday and yes, another Soopsworld 2.0 playlist to soundtrack your Friday afternoon or whenever you choose to play it. Don't forget to actually subscribe on Spotify, a) it gives my ego a well needed boost and b) you get to refer back to it super-quick and stuff = winners all round.

This week I have mainly been doing delightful things like cvs, job applications and radiating positivity in the face of unemployment stats pumped out by the Government, Daily Mail, news and doom merchants all over the place (including home, FUN TIMES). Oh and organising a new series of midweek posts that should hit Soopsworld in the near future... And taking pictures of the cat's enormous fluffy tummy with retro camera phone apps because it never stops being amusing (the vignette filter isn't slimming, unfortunately for him).

Got any albums on Spotify you'd like to recommend? Post them in the comments section below or tweet @soops77 the link or email soopsworld@gmail.com.

Oh and if you're bored of Spotify already or compiling a playlist is just too strenuous for you... some of us got a new toy...sign up to see what tracks we're playing and why.

So we made it to Wednesday, high-fives all round right? It's been a morning of experiments at Soopsworld temporary HQ, alongside the usual Sorting Stuff Out, Experiment 1 which you will see above is quite possibly the worst piece of Photoshoppery I've ever produced in my life. I'm publishing it a) because I don't have a back-up and b) as a digital reminder of what can happen when you don't pre-plan your artwork and you muck around with the smudge tool too much. May it be a lesson to us all.

Experiment 2 is hopefully far more beneficial (and less nightmare inducing hopefully) to you lot. It's a tried and tested (Soopsworld) concept - put 4 albums/EPs in one playlist, hit shuffle and hopefully they'll sort of work together. This normally works if they're of a similar genre only this week, yeeeah, it's eclectic to put it politely. We have Canyons from Perth, the psychedelic rock ramblings of Portugal, The Man from Portland, Oregon, Little Majorette from Stockholm and Wise Blood from Pittsburgh. It could work, it could be a disaster - hit shuffle and see what happens...

Bored of vacuous regurgitated nonsense pushed by the pretentious? Just when I was beginning to get a bit jaded with Music Land, I got sent this gem and my faith was restored.

It's evident that The Ghosts know exactly what they're doing and one of the things they're doing is taking synth back off the Idiots and putting it within stylish, catchy pop songs that you're just as happy contemplating the lyrics to as shimmying to on the dancefloor.

This track's not out until January 15th so it means a fair wait until the album which I want rather badly. I'm not very good at being patient but the best things come to those that wait, yada yada yada...

Soopsworld 2.0 Volume Three

Another week, another collection of songs in the form of Soopsworld 2.0: Volume Three. It starts off fairly synthy then ends up in a succession of female solo artists. Boom, etc.

As I mentioned earlier in the week, I wasn't really in the mood for either Kate Bush or Rihanna (both had stuff out this week) but I got round to listening to both and well, Kate Bush – 50 Words for Snow was a particularly pleasant soundtrack to a sunny, crisp morning pottering about getting stuff sorted... I don't know how I can elaborate, really, it's very Kate Bush and if you like her then you'll probably like it.

Rihanna, on the other hand... Facebook friends may have seen the article on Lana Del Rey I posted that discusses the somewhat jaded, bordering on sinister tone of 'Video Games's lyrics. Inevitably it brought Rihanna to mind, Rihanna – Talk That Talk to me sounds like a woman on her back that is so bored she can't even be bothered to fake it. Sure, there are songs on there that with the right remix I'm sure will feature at Christmas parties all over the land but for me, it sounds like both Rihanna and her producer/songwriters are going through the motions and writing/performing even more to a formula than normal.

Which brings me to X Factor. Despite some people that class themselves as 'musos' turning their nose up at X Factor and snorting with derision at those of us that watch and even Tweet about it (hell, I even do 'notes' and post them on my Facebook wall but that's admittedly more to do with my limited entertainment options at the moment), I still find it entertaining. And that's sort of the point of X-Factor, it's about entertainment more than music (and shifting units of course). Each year the contestants' eyes get more crazed with the hunger for fame, the characters get more grotesque and cartoon-like - there are in-jokes and catchphrases like any old school variety show only the added pressure of viewing figures, maintaining profiles and selling records and stuff. X Factor on Twitter is the digital equivalent of the colosseum only instead of wrestling lions, the contestants perform karaoke in varying degrees of stylish costume depending on how nice they've been to the show's stylists (allegedly). As my friend Rob pointed out to me during a 'debate', there has always been trash, with X Factor they're actually releasing it and if you want to start dissing the whole X Factor contestants being products then well, you have to look at the whole bloody music business to an extent (in marketing not creative terms obvs) so let's not go there.

N.B

My Twitter name is @soops77 if you want to join in taking the piss out of X Factor tomorrow.

Midweek Musical Meander: Robbers On High Street

Robbers On High Street – Hey There Golden Hair

LIke a good little social media person that actually listens to 'statistical advice' for once that the peak engagement time is Wednesday around about now (yes, that's why your Facebook/Twitter feeds are heaving with matter, ah how funny it would be if that was nonsense...), I figured I'd pop a little something on the site. I looked at this weeks New Releases using my highly sophisticated methods (Amazon new releases pages & the rarely updated on time Spotify New Album Releases - cutting edge or what).

I'm not in the zone for the new Rihanna album (this zone requires lots of vodka and having robotics dance-offs on a sticky indie dancefloor with Fox and co) and I'm not in a Kate Bush sort of mood today (not wearing sufficient sleeves to wave around while expressing myself in the form of daaaance) so I mooched through my recent folders of albums on Spotify and found the Robbers On High Street album I mentioned the other week.

Out in September (so contraversially Not That New), ROHS have been likened to The Strokes (nope, not hearing that comparison) and Spoon (errrm, no) in the past. I think a US Belle & Sebastian with slightly less sophisticated lyrics is more accurate in this album's case... in a good way. More to the point it's good midweek music in that it's upbeat and has brass bits that will remind you of dancing round festivals off your face on scrumpy in your denim cut-offs and straw trilby or whatever. So if you're staring at spreadsheets, losing the will to live - probably ideal, then.

Eclectic mix of tracks? Check. 'Guerilla' artwork knocked out in 20 mins? Check. Shameless raiding of muso mates' Spotify libraries? Check.

Another Friday, another playlist. This week as well collecting tracks here and there on my ongoing online treasure hunt as normal, I also raided DHY Creative's and Rollo Grady's Spotify playlists (again) as well as visited Drowned In Sound regularly. I trust their ears, so should you.

Yes that is the back garden in Somerset, I literally looked out of the window for my inspiration. Imagine what it'd have been if I was back in London?

CMJ Treasure Hunting & Minimalist Album Recommendations,

Hello.

Long time no see, etc etc. I’ll indulge myself in thinking you’ve all been waiting on the edge of your seats for the next Soopsworld music roundup... nah not really. I have been preoccupied with sorting Stuff out for most of the summer, though and it was good to step back from the hype cycle for a bit.

I’m assuming you’re up to date on the treasures of the summer/early autumn but if not, here’s a large chunk of them in my first compilation Soopsworld 2.0 Volume One (yeah alright it’s a Spotify playlist but it’s curated with love by yours truly so it’s a compilation as far as I’m concerned. ‘Digital bundle’ is even less sexy than ‘compilation’ so let’s just leave it at that.).

I’m working on Volume Two as we speak needless to say but meanwhile, after wading through CMJ (Google it – it’s the one before SXSW basically) mixtapes and knowledgeable corners of the Internet to filter out treasure, here’s some highlights, cryptically titled CMJ Treasure. I was meant to be at CMJ this year and, thanks to Flatmageddon (flathunting in London HELL) it didn’t happen. Tragic. No really, I was properly gutted – couldn’t even look at the Twitter feed, it was awful. Thank goodness for the Internet quite frankly. CRASHING ON...

Oh before I get to the album recommendations, go buy your copy of the Alabama Shakes EP on Bandcamp before they go ENORMOUS, the A&Rs are having kittens over them and with good reason, they’re awesome.

Recommendations

.Thanks to Spotify and Facebook getting it on, I can now see what my lot are listening to. It was no surprise that M83 – Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. and I Break Horses – Hearts have been on repeat since their releases, the same with Justice – Audio, Video, Disco.

I don’t really do album reviews as regular readers will know, I prefer to recommend stuff in the fashion that a mate down the pub might or just give you the Spotify link so you can make your own mind up. So..

Lately I have listened to ; Kele – The Hunter (“alright, the cover art’s possibly more interesting than the tracks, though...”) Laura Veirs – Tumble Bee (“Twee as f**k, even the TITLE is twee – might as well have called it Now That’s What I Call Twee... ”), The Bandana Splits – Mister Sam Presents The Bandana Splits (“Retro girl group stylee yet you don’t feel the urge to stab things after a couple of tracks= win”), The Sound of Arrows – Voyage (“synthy but not sleep inducing”) Florence + The Machine – Ceremonials (“As expected”), Atlas Sound – Parallax (“Fuses influences seamlessly, a grower to appreciate the subtleties upon multiple listens. A no-brainer for film/tv”), Firehorse – And So They Ran Faster... (“I liked their name, I admit it but the album’s rather lovely too actually”), Robbers On High Street – Hey There Golden Hair (“RING THE HOT FESTIVAL BAND KLAXON!”) araabMUZIK – Electronic Dream (“CMJ got all moist over him, probably worth a listen”) and finally David Lynch – Crazy Clown Time (“All you’d expect and better – bet Twin Peaks box set sales spike again”).

I won’t leave it as long to the next post, promise.

Oh and if you're a music blogger and interested in taking part in a networking project, comment with your url below or email soopsworld@gmail.com as I might just have a cunning plan or two up my sleeve...
