Interview With Undersound (Gareth Evans)

Hailing from Cardiff, Undersound (known by loved ones as a rather more sedate Gareth Evans) appears to have been destined for a hectic life in music. As a 5 year old he showcased impressive promise and an obvious affinity, proven by his ever increasing repertoire of instruments. Ranging from French Horns to Drums, I'd imagine it was quite unclear what music he would end up making once the creating and playing progressed from hobby to full on career. I was first made aware of Undersound through current collaborator and Culture Compass interviewee, fellow Welshman Lucius Brave. From researching for this interview it would appear that we have a prolific music maker on our hands, one with a wealth of collaborations, contributions and solo creations - all warranting attention. I managed to lure Undersound away from the laptop screens, keypads and buttons just along enough to scratch the surface on life as a DJ, Producer, Writer, Performer.... and teacher!

I read that you took up music from a very early age. I know that you are proficient in many instruments including French horn, guitar, drums, trumpet etc. What was the first instrument you picked up?

Probably my parents pots and pans, but properly it was the piano when I was around 5 or 6

Did you grow up in a musical environment? Are your family similarly as musical and creative?

No there’s no history of music in my family. It’s always been a bit of a mystery but apparently from the moment I could talk I would always bang on about playing the trumpet.

Knowing as you did from an early age, that music was the path you wanted to go down career wise, did you bother much with academic studies or did you channel everything you had into music?

When I started getting really serious about the French horn I was traveling 2 hrs for horn lessons in Cardiff (being from Haverfordwest in west Wales), so that used to heavily dent into my school time. And when I was 14 I went to a specialist music school in Somerset on a scholarship so I was able to do reduced academics to focus on music.

Were you the kid who joined all the school orchestras and bands or did you always concentrate on your own projects?

From about 10 I was off playing on orchestra course round the UK in every holiday. Once I’d started playing the guitar and drums at the age of around 10, I pretty much spent all my available time jamming and writing tunes with mates in some shape or form.

Wales is often heralded for its musical heritage. Some artists say that growing up in a small town with little opportunity stirred them to strive for success through their music.How do you think Wales shaped your progression?

For me it’s nog got that much to do with Wales, though Wales does have great and unique music schemes and support right through the school system. I always studied privately and from the age of about 11 to 14 I would be spending my school holidays away on music courses and playing in children’s orchestras orchestras round the UK. Then at 14 I won the aforementioned scholarship.

When did you start to make a living out of your talent?

Probably about 10 years ago when I decided climbing the call centre ladder wasn’t for me so I started teaching.

You have been teaching for a number of years now. Not all talented people have the qualities to pass their skills on to others. What traits help to make a good teacher do you think?

Having patience is definitely essential. But aside from the obvious it’s good to be passionate about what you do. I take pride in each of my students individually and get a great buzz from seeing them improve and enjoy playing.

How did your participation on the High Contrast album change your perspective on what you wanted to do musically?

It was after meeting Lincoln and working with him on his 2006 album 'Touch Guys Don’t Dance' that really turned me onto the idea of producing drum and bass. I guess it was because I was playing piano and guitars for him and for the first time I associated playing with producing dance music and saw a future in it for me.

You have been teaming up with Lucius Brave lately. Who does what when creating a track?

I do everything and he brings sandwiches and checks his twitter on his phone!!!! Ha ha ha nah we work in my studio so I generally sit in the captain’s chair and do all the technical stuff, but he has such a good ear for arrangements, structure and sounds due to the amount he djs. He knows the genre inside and out so I trust his views all the way!!!! (He does bring great snacks though!!!)

How do you find collaborating as a whole, do find it hard to relinquish control at times?

I do find it tough collaborating generally unless there’s a new and fresh element that the other person’s going to bring. People who inspire you are generally good to collaborate with. Working with Lucius Brave was really refreshing for me because I hadn’t produced any electro house before, but I really wanted to. So when we first met each other It was always on the cards. I have just started a couple of hip hop projects which I am quite excited about. I am doing an E.P for London based MC ‘Intermet’ and also an E.P with Swansea MC ‘Triple Dot Beast’. With my dnb I always enjoy working with singers as they can often really shape a tune. I’m very lucky to have worked with some brilliant singers such as Oliver Hawksworth, Jane Thomas and Nicki Rose. I also work with House producers ‘Karl G and Jamesie’ as a vocalist which is really refreshing for me because I can just be a vocalist and not worry about the tune production for a change.

As a DJ does your strength lie in the mixing or the performing element do you think?

I would say lately I am definitely more at home in the studio. I have found the older I get the harder it is to go out and chase gigs. It is a great buzz dj-ing though, and I do play as and when a gig comes my way. But my heart lies in the studio these days. Lately I have been doing a bit more ‘session work' for other producers also so that has drawn me a little more to the studio too. Though having said that, on a bit of a different note I run an open mic night in Cardiff which gives me a chance to play regularly. Variety and all that.

I feel like unless you immersed in the dj-ing world you are largely in the dark about some of the great talents within it. Do you think there is enough awareness and press given to acts such as yourself?

I think there is a massive underground scene in dance music, especially with the internet and the ease of self promotion. So you can get as into it as you want really, but I think it’s the same as any genre. You can scratch the surface with what you hear in the mainstream on TV and radio etc or you can dig deeper and search out more underground acts. Though I wouldn’t say no to more awareness and press for acts such as myself.

In your line of work, how integral is having good promoters and agents backing you?

It’s essential really.There’s only so much self promotion one can do. I find the Labels that I am signed on are very proactive with promotion which is great. I also am very lucky to have massive support from Radio stations such as Bassdrive who are a massive drum and bass station so that gets me really good coverage.

Interview With Atsuko Kudo

It's not every day you get the opportunity to question someone at the helm of their given specialism, but by interviewing the award winning Latex designer Atsuko Kudo, I have been granted just that. Quite rightly, the diminutive designer is lauded for her innovative and revolutionary designs by those immersed in the fetish scene as well as the high fashion devotees. She consistently strives to take advantage of the unique qualities of her chosen medium - the garments and accessories showcase it's high shine finish to greatest possible effect, and her intelligent tailoring makes positive use of latex's constrictive nature. She also manages to challenge preconceptions aligned to the 'alternative' material.

It is undeniable that her professional relationship with reigning queen of pop has not only aided her notoriety, but brought broader attention to a material that has long been considered only suitable for the most daring of dressers. This continuing and ever blossoming relationship is also one that constantly pushes the designer, whether its through the sheer mass of garments needed, or a brief which requires her to challenge her current techniques and the capabilities of her beloved material. Lady Gaga and her creative team Hause of Gaga's epic treatment for the video for 'Marry The Night', proved to happily stretch Kudo's couturier skills, particularly when it came to the stunning nude ballerina looks. From the incredible results you can see that she excells under pressure.

Her niche talent has also earned her great respect within the country she works, and seen her hand picked by curators Oriole Cullen and Sonnet Stanfill to join other UK dwelling designers in the V & A exhibition - Ballgowns, British Glamour since 1950. This is one of many exciting things celebrating her work in 2012. With the likes of outlandish style icons Nicki Minaj capturing her curves in an Atsuko kudo, and numerous magazines including her work in their main fashion shoots we will have endless sighting of her work to enjoy this year.

Read on to find out more about her relationship with the chamealion songstress, working with legendary Fashion creative Nicola Formichetti, and what exactly makes her completely devoted to latex....

Can you tell me what you are working on in the studio today?

We are working on new collection. We are planning to do a shoot soon so working on that today. Really exciting.

Are you finding that there is an influx of orders in time for Valentines?

Valentine is a not long away - it's normally very busy for Valentines. We sell lots of our red latex accessories - chokers, eye masks and heart shaped pasties. Love is the answer to all!

Last time I interviewed you for Stylebible you had a very small team in the studio producing the work. Have you had to expand to cope with the increasing demand for your designs?

We are still a small company. I run the company with Simon Hoare, who is my business partner and husband! And we have some great staff both in the design studio and in our shop. All latex products are still hand made by our fairies in London studio. We have a small but great team!

You had produced a few pieces for Lady Gaga including her Elizabethan costume for the Royal Variety performance. How has your personal and professional relationship with LG progressed since then?

I think we are building a trusting relationship which is very nice. We have been working together for long time now. We just made all of the latex ballet looks for her last video – 'Marry The Night' and she wore our Crystal suit (in Jade green!) for the Jonathan Ross show – we made a matching leash for the sheep she was with!

As you have said , some of the pieces have been made for performance. What amendments do you make to ensure Gaga can move in them and feel as comfortable as possible?

She is fantastic performer, so she can makes anything work. But of course we make sure garments are checked properly before leaves studio, especially when we make custom designs with a short deadline. Even though she has house of gaga with her all the time, it's difficult to fix latex items if there are any problem once the garments have left our studio

Do you think part of the point of wearing latex is to feel constricted and slightly uncomfortable?

For me, Latex is clearly not for every day. There are way to

Latex empowers women. When you wear latex you feel special like a super woman. And good latex will get you attention in the right way.

Your work will be showcased at the V&A Ballgowns exhibit. This must be an extremely proud moment for you all?

Yes. We are really thrilled to be displayed alongside great names Norman Hartnell and Alexander McQueen in the V&A Ballgowns exhibition. V&A was the first destination for my trip to London. It really means a lot to me and team.

You are really trying to champion Latex to the masses. Do you worry that if it loses all of its taboo it may lose some of its unique appeal though?

Latex makes a woman look amazing! It's the beautiful gloss, and if you are fitted properly to fit your body it works as the ultimate shape-wear. Nothing can change that. Latex is very sensual and empowering to wear for fetish or fashion. I think that is very unique and individual appeal, but I don't think it's for everyone. I think latex as same as other fetish items - Corset, High heels. They are beautiful to watch. Latex is a special item for a special occasion, therefore will never loose it's unique appeal. It's great that more people are start accepting latex as another fabric. I heard that latex used be so taboo that some people committed suicide over it. That's nonsense!

Your pieces are commissioned and called-in for all sorts of shoots. Do get more excited seeing it used in a sexual/fetish style or in a more unpredictable or high fashion setting?

I love seeing our latex in both sexual/ fetish style and the more unpredictable/ High Fashion settings. They both excite me. Also I love seeing the latex garment on any type of people. We have so much fun with our customers. The range of our customers are so wide and they are great! We get lots of challenges and we try our best to make them all work.

You’ve dressed idols like Gaga and Grace Jones. Supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi have worn your accessories. Olympians like Jessica Ennis have worn dresses for photo-shoots. Who would you like to dress next?

One day, I'd love to see the queen wearing our latex - something smart and glamorous! I never thought the day will come to see Latex and the queen at the same place before seeing Lady Gaga meet the queen...so we might have a little chance to dream?

If you could create a uniform for something, what would you choose?

Tennis?

You don’t just create purely fashion pieces, you created a curtain for a Swing Project 3 (art display) and mermaid tails for some promo for Pirates of The Caribbean. Are you always looking for new challenges to take on using your beloved material?

The idea of what you can do with Latex excites me. So I’m enjoying every project every minute!

Have you ever thought about producing a home furnishings range? It is wipe-able after all!

We have made some Latex bedding and so on before on request. So it can be done.

You created some pieces with Nicola Formichetti for the Thierry Muglers A/W 11 collection. Obviously his work is greatly admired, but what is he like to work with?

He is extremely sharp and free, also nice, so he's very inspirational to work with.

Did you learn anything from him that has informed your work since working with him?

Focus on the right things at the right time. And be nice.

Do you ever find collaborations stifling or do you enjoy having access to someone else s creative ideas?

I love collaboration. We collaborate with many creative people like designer, stylist and customers. Every collaboration brings something you never have done with out other party so that's inspiring. But it's nice to do our own projects too. There is a talk of doing Fashion show again this year so that's exciting.

Latex is a lot about empowerment, strength and sexiness. Do you think you could create very soft, delicate, romantic pieces?

Being feminine in the way you wish is empowering. It doesn't matter which direction you approach it. What does matter is what is inside your mind. The power of glamorous women enjoying themselves is very strong. Nothing can replace that in any time or place. I think some of the pieces we have already produced are quite soft and romantic and we may produce more in the future!

A lot of people will believe that their figures are not suitable for latex garments. What would you suggest for certain body shapes?

I am designing clothing for everyone who wants to feel feminine, beautiful and strong. I believe you can achieve all of that without looking hard core. It’s all about how you want to feel. We are working hard to make our clothing to be glamorous, functional, affordable and for all shapes + sizes + age of woman! We are lucky to have dressed so many women who are special. We have so many ladies who tell us that they have a strong emotional reaction with this feeling. We recently had a client who was in tears because of how she felt about the difference it made to her self perception.

How do you maintain and look after your latex pieces?

Latex is new fabric to almost everyone on this planet. We learn about other fabrics as part of growing up, but not latex. As with other fabrics, you have to treat and look after the latex in the right way. If you follow the instructions (See our product care on website) it will last for long time. Also latex garments can be fixed. Do come to see us if you have any problems so we can help you.

My personal Atsuko Kudo experience...

Style writers (and mothers) often remind us of one particular dressing rule...that you show either legs or chest, but never both. In my case it is generally neither. I don't know whether it's down to my parents old-fashioned views and rules when it came to my dressing as a young teenager, or whether I am just naturally relatively reserved when it comes to flesh flashing. Despite remaining covered-up for the most part, I am not averse to donning a figure-hugging dress( if I''ve had a non bloating dinner), and I will always opt for a skinny jeans over a boyfriends fit. However, an Atsuko dress takes body-con to the next level.

When I visited the store to meet Atsuko, it soon became clear that I was going to be one lucky clothes horse and be given the opportunity to try on one of her amazing creations. Momentarily considering a Jessica Rabbit-eque red number with an alluring split up the thigh, I decided to opt for a reliable LBD. After feeling an initial thrill at the prospect of channeling my inner Gaga/ Dita, panic set in when I realized a poor member of the team would have the task of encasing me in the latex piece. I thought it only right to give the poor girl prior warning of my unkempt legs - which were likely capable of penetrating through the latex, as well as her flesh, as she helped me squash into the dress. The skin that the dress would have to slide over was then talced up to make the process more manageable, a new aspect to the routine of getting dressed. After a bit of breast manipulation and squashing in of excess back fat, the zip tickled up my spine and reached the top of back. To complete the look I squeezed me flat-loving feet into some rather sexy platform latex shoes. I would say I sauntered over to the mirror to admire my new look, but stumbled would be more appropriate given my eneptidity when it comes to walking in heels.

I will admit to being a bit shocked at the reflection I saw in the mirror... but in a good way. After the usual critical self analysis, I actually felt that my predominant hips were positive characteristic, that I'd created an hourglass shape I'd never achieved prior. My boobs, which have already started to wilt with age, were hoisted together, looking plump and perky, and the little stubborn doughnut of chub that surrounds my belly button was sucked in, giving the appearance of a flat stomach.

What was most notable about my AK experience was the new straight posture adopted as a result. As a youngster I would stoop, embarrassed by the obvious protruding of my ever-increasing chest. Over a decade on and I've never quite regained the perfect upright stance.On a particularly lethargic or insecure day, I would go as far to say that I don't look all too dissimilar to phase 2 of ape evolving into man. I don't know whether I was merely proud of the new figure I was cutting and wanting to show it off as best as possible, or whether the constrictive nature of of the material and it's design ensured it. Either way, I could see that this confident looking person reflecting back was a far more appealing sight than I am used to seeing.

Despite my inner naughty I have always fallen into the 'safe' category when it comes to fashion, so I never imagined I'd be someone who could wear or pull off a latex piece. Although it's not exactly everyday comfort lounge-wear, I enjoyed every sucked in moment of wearing the dress... and even more how it made me feel. I now find myself constantly trying to come up with an excuse to return to the jam packed store on Highbury Road, and seeking out an event which is suitable/worthy of me wearing a showstopping Atsuko piece.

Whatever addition I eventually make to my wardrobe, I urge each and every one of you to give a piece a spin. You may find you have a new appreciation for your body, you might find it causes you to unleash your inner raunch, or you may simply enjoy wearing something created by the best in the business....

While I mull over which of the array of stunning outfits I should add to my wardrobe I will be dropping some serious hints in time for Valentines gifting. I am thinking that a red assecories would be a perfect first AK acquisition....

Wrap Up Against Poverty 2012

With London Fashion Week drawing near, an event showcasing what we should be wrapping up in come the end of the year, charity Elizabeth Finn Care is celebrating all things fashion by auctioning a selection of unique items, donated by top celebrities and designers.

At Elizabeth Finn Care, a national charity whose grants team offers financial support to those in need, we know people can struggle to afford the items of winter clothing they need to stay warm and healthy during the colder months. There are 13.5 million people living below the poverty line in the UK, among them 3.8 million children. Through Wrap Up Against Poverty, money to help buy more people in financial need buy essential clothes.

The inaugural Wrap Up Against Poverty campaign was launched in 2011. Over half the people the charity helps had to go without new clothes before they made the approach. By bidding for the fabulous pieces available, the public can not only boost their style credentials but also enable people in financial need survive the winter months.

Each item available reflects both the style and personality of the individual or designer who has donated it. Bidders can go for the classic look of Sienna Miller’s Doma fleece coat, or follow in Dame Helen Mirren’s footsteps by opting for her beautiful Alberta Ferretti coat. Glamour puss Kimberley Walsh’s plush Louis Vuitton scarf will be up for grabs too, as will a beautiful Alexander McQueen suit from Fern Britton, and stylish winter coats from comedy heroes Mathew Horne and Ruth Jones. To add to a spectacular celebrity list, exclusive designer items including a golden Martina Spetlova shift dress have been donated alongside beautiful items from high street stores such as Ted Baker and Topshop.

Wrap Up Against Poverty was a huge hit in 2011, raising both funds and awareness of the fact that millions of people in the UK are living in financial need and many can’t afford to clothe themselves through winter. Wrap Up Against Poverty 2012 will be even greater and grander.

St Andrews Fashion Show 2012

The 25th of February sees St Andrews put on their yearly charity fashion show. It is the biggest student-run fashion show in the UK with designers such as Nicole Farhi and William Tempest on the catwalk, as well as the winner of the Alfa Romeo Young Designer competition. All the proceeds go to the charity, Muir Maxwell Trust, a trust that aims to raise money for young sufferers of epilepsy.

Sadly I am unable to attend this year, but I thought I'd post the summary of my experience of last years wonderful event....

Last night I arrived home after an epic 8 hour train journey from Leuchers in Scotland. The first hour I had found myself forced to stand and sandwiched between rowdy rugby supporters with the lovely whiff of the train toilet helping to make the experience even more pleasurable ( I know it can be hard to sense tone in text but please detect my intense sarcasm here). After a hellish hour with the hangover drum relentlessly banging the hoards departed the train and I was able to crawl to a seat.

I then had time to reflect on the night before, my morning grumpiness elevated instantly.... what a cracking night the team put on at St Andrews.

Some of you may have heard of the event due to the fact that our future Queen Katherine Middleton once participated as a model in a show while studying at the University. It has been reported that Will first spotted her beauty when she strutted her stuff on the catwalk..... thus the event has become a place of romantic legend.

This year the nominated charity would be Trekstock.Regular readers of this blog will have heard about this particular charity numerous times through the tremendous fashion/music events that their founder and director Sophie Epstone has put on.Via these creative industries they engage with the public, raising awareness and funds for cancers affecting young people.

The winning designs...

I had left my home in Surrey at 7am to make it to Leuchers with just enough time to get my bearings and freshen up before heading to the Lower College Hall. The impressive building would play host to the champagne reception where we would see the first ever winner of the Alfa Romeo Young Designer Award crowned. Attendees included judges Percy Parker and Amy Molyneaux of PPQ( who was sporting extremely cool vibrant red hair) and Alex, the stunning former winner of Britains Next Top Model.

Once announced and I had time to say a quick hello to Kitty (aka Style Slicker),who looked resplendent in a structured peach dress, before tottering tentatively over the cobbles for a superhero-quick change of attire.

So in my pink and white Olivia Rubin dress I made it just in time to jump in the last courtesy car that would take me to the huge marquee containing the reveling students, VIPS and an undoubtedly manic catwalk backstage .

The lovely Jess from the St Andrews Press team maintained her role as the perfect host, making sure myself and the other journalists including some lovely ladies from Tatler and Scotlands No.1 magazine were seated and refreshed with champagne a-plenty.

After a little wait and a subtle parouse of the generous goodie bag the show kicked off, the DJ's pumping beats signaling the beginning of what would be an impressive and varied display of fashion...

Alongside the student designs some of my personal favourite designers had garments grace the catwalk including the aforementioned PPQ, William Tempest and DAGMAR.

Once the catwalk show was over it was time for a spend fest with the auction that would see the students and guests bidding on an array of desirable lots including a Take That song-sheet ( something I would secretly love to own).

After a jaw dropping amount of cash was donated to the worthy cause the party quickly shifted to the 'party' tent where DJ Sebastian Drums was dropping tune after tune for the now quite 'festive' crowd. After a good few hours of boogying with my new friends I left to scoff some St Andrews Curry and Chips ( classy huh) before heading home to bed.

The amount of work that must have gone into putting on a show of such quality and size is absolutely mind blowing and the whole team deserve a massive pat on the back and a well earned rest!!

Interview with St Spirit

Hailing from Crystal Palace, nineteen year old Myles, Sam, Ryan, Joe and Josh formed whilst together at college last year. But it would appear that jamming and creating music wasn't the only thing distracting them from their studies - their band name inspired by the island San Esperito from cult Xbox game Just Cause. Thankfully the allure of the addictive computer console didn't effect the quality of the music, Radio One’s Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq, as well as XFM’s John Kennedy confirming their musical genius with frequent plays of their latest release.
The upcoming debut album was recorded in a living room by the band. Mixing duties were then taken on by world-renowned engineer Adrian Bushby. You'd be forgiven for making the presumption that this part of the process was completed in some plush state of the art studio somewhere, particularly when considering that Bushby's talent has been previously utilized by superstars including the Foo's and Muse . However, the truth is more in-keeping with the St.Spirit... urrr... spirit. The record was actually mixed in a garden.
The debut single, Pigeon, will be released on February 28th. It is the lead track taken from their debut EP of the same name, which will be released on February 20th. I spoke to Myles McCabe (lead vocals and guitar) , Sam Robson (guitar and vocals) , Joe Reed (Bass guitar and backing vocals) to find out about the process and get a handle on what St. Spirit is all about.

When did you all know you that you had a talent or interest in music?
Myles: I was about 10 years old when ‘School of Rock’ came out; I was already a massive Tenacious D fan and Jack Black was like my idol, that film blew my tiny mind.
Sam: I would tap on tables and chairs etc..
Have you all been in various musical acts before this?
Myles: Some of us still are in various musical acts, SamT, Fledgling, MC Carbohydrate to name but a few
Sam: I used to be in a couple of bands but nothing as serious as this.
What jobs were you doing before deciding to make a go of the band?
Sam: Jobcenter.
Myles: I sold appetite suppressants
What makes you feel this formation is ‘the one’?
Myles: Just a hunch.
Mission statement of the band?
Myles: I think just like, try and make good songs that sound good
What do all members bring to the band? Please describe the band personality traits.. is one a good organizer and another good at settling arguments for instance?
Myles: Really none of us are either of those things, not in the slightest.
Joe: Ryan brings funny drawings
Can you outline the writing process for you - who takes on the lyrics, where do you write, is it a completely collaborative experience?
Myles: Sam and I work on the music together. Sometimes I write the lyrics in afterwards, sometimes I write them along with a song and we arrange it together. Most of our ideas happen as we’re recording, we approach it like we’re just doing a demo and we just try out everything. We usually spend about 5 or 6 straight hours recording each track, then Sam mixes it a bit when I go home.
You’ve undergone a line up change. Can you tell me the reason behind this change?
Myles: The lineup has changed a lot over the odd 3 years we’ve been doing this, Sam and myself have been the only consistent members.
I hear you record everything in your house. Is this merely because it is convenient? Is it to have as much control over the recording as possible? Does being at your home make you work more efficiently?
Myles: Yeah we do everything at Sam’s house, even given the choice of a big studio for now we would definitely stick with Sam’s. I think it does come down to control and convenience. I don’t know about efficiency, some days we’ll mess around with ideas and it won’t sound good so we won’t record anything at all that day and that’s totally fine, there’s no pressure.
Max makes all of your videos. Do you let him decide the treatment for the visuals, or is this something you work on together?
Myles: Yeah Max is my brother so we usually bounce ideas off each other and develop them a bit together but ultimately he has creative control over the videos.
Do you find it easier to instill the ideas you want when collaborating with family or friends? Perhaps you feel able to flag up any issues more freely than with someone outside of your circle?
Myles: Yeah as I said, Max being my hermano makes it a lot easier for us to share ideas, we sort of use each other as a sounding board for our individual projects as well. As for instilling musical ideas I think we’ve learned that it usually works best not to get too attached to our respective preconceptions about how a song should sound.
There’s a very DIY nature to what you do. Is this something you’d try to maintain to an extent, even as your success and opportunities grow?
Myles: If the DIY thing stays, it stays. It’s not the kind of thing you can really affect but we’ll always just do what sounds best to us, we’re probably going to end up walking a pretty lo-fi line for the foreseeable.
What do the rest of your family and loved ones think about you pursuing a career in music?
Myles: They pressured me into this, I wanted to be a doctor.
Sam: They're cool with it.
Adrian Bushby mixes your work. He is currently working with Muse, and has worked with incredible acts including Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode, to name but a few. What do you think sets him apart from other engineers?
We're not signed and he's doing it because he likes the music, we really appreciate that. Whatever he's doing to those tracks is definitely working, what exactly that is, I couldn't say.
Are you with him for the majority of the time he is mixing or do you leave him to it - him sending updated files to you throughout the process?
Myles: The process is really between Adrian and Sam, they do it all online.
Have you ever tried to get glean some stories regarding his rather exciting former and current clients?
Myles: He has a pretty awesome collection of Star Wars stuff.
Does anything daunt you about progressing in the music industry?
Sam: Not really, we all really appreciate the stages we are going though.
Will you guys be the sort that reads every review? How do you deal with criticism?
Myles: As the man himself once said: “Fuck critics, you can kiss my whole asshole” but yeah… most of the reviews we’ve had have been pretty positive.

Actually I played bass for Port Isla since then, does that count? Just remembered I saw Scroobius Pip at the Banquet night New Slang on my birthday. That was pretty special.
What is on your recently played list?
Myles: Quite a lot of Antlers and Mountain Goats but it’s mainly Elliott Smith
Sam: Deerhoof, Jesu, Eric Whitacre and a few other that I can't remember
Joe: Vetiver, My Bloody Valentine, Weezer & I'm digging the new Wooden Ships stuff.

GHD SCARLET- The Ideal Valentines Gift??

When I got my brand new Scarlet GHD's in the post I had to take a few minutes out of my day to admire the beauties. My love for the humble version of the super straightener was already cemented, but this supermodel one, with it's hot red designer coat, swiftly caused me to swap my affections. Who said keeping it in the family is a bad thing!

I have always been a bit partial to objects that fall into the retro bracket. Perhaps it's because depictions of eras gone by seem so much more romantic.. and the women look like.... well women! My obsession with these looks has been heightened by recent cinema trips and movie nights at home. I still obsess over Keira's stunning emerald floor length gown in Atonement, considered a platinum restyle after viewing My Week With Marilyn and decided to hunt down dropped waist pieces after being mesmerized by The Artsist. With its rich red case, complete with art deco badge this would certainly add a welcome retro element to area of pampering in my room.

As well as enjoying the vintage inspired qualities of this new glamourous version it dawned on me that this is the sort of present I'd like to get from a man on Valentines Day. It has enough elements to link it to the romantic occasion ( the red colour and luxury packaging) but it something that a lady can actually find useful, and not throw away once the day is over. Plus we all know that a straightening iron is pretty much an essential in most women's life, so if it can be opulent too then even better!

I always feel a bit sorry for boys when it comes to Valentines Day. From chats with my girly friends it would seem that it a bit of a minefield and it most definitely not a case of one size fits all. Girls are complicated, and one girls trash is another girls treasure.

Officially I have been single for quite a while... I'm hesitant to reveal exactly how long, but an adequately frustrating length of time nonetheless. Last year I did receive a card however, and that mere gesture was enough to keep me from feeling sorrowful for the entire wretched day. Girls that are high maintenance or used to be treated to an expensive date as well as an array of well thought out (or designer) gifts will expect a lot, and failure to do so could result in an extremely huffy brat-woman, no nookie for a week... and potentially singledom.

Like I said we are all different.. my friend Nat despises flowers but I would probably cry tears of joy if a bunch landed on my doorstep come Valentines Day. I guess the key with most things is knowing your audeince. So guys, I hope you have been paying attention and not doing that thing where you are pretending to listen while being dragged round the shops. A tip for you... these shopping trips are often where the girls are dropping fairly unsubtle hints for future gifts....

EASTPAK ARTIST STUDIO LAUNCH

This Wednesday I headed down to East London's JaguarShoes to see what some of the World’s most original artists and creative personalities did with the authentic EASTPAK backpack, at a Private View of the Exhibition.

Ten of the unique bags will be on show from the 2^nd February until the 24^th February at two London locations – the JaguarShoes Gallery, Shoreditch and the EastpakStore, Carnaby Street.

The bags on show have been taken from the UK artists collaborations -Johnny Marr from The Smiths; creative Julie Verhoeven; emerging artistRichie Culver; illustrator William Broome; artist Charlie Bowden; label Copson Street; comedian Tom Deacon; fashion blogger Audrey Rodgers; singer Marina Diamandis and nail artist Sophy Robson.

Taking inspiration from around the world, these bags feature nods to the upcoming Olympics, culture and trends from around the world and even nail art. Each of the bags is a one off and on the 19^th March they will be available to buy online at eastpak.com.

All proceeds from the EASTPAK Artist Studio go to the worthy charity program, Designers Against AIDS. Founded in 2004 by the non-profit organization ‘Beauty Without Irony’, DAA’s mission is to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS and promote prevention as the only cure for the disease.

One of only 22 apps from the Fashion & Beauty category included in the top 500 - iPerfumer is delighted with this accolade. It comes as a result of listening to the comments and suggestions of the iPerfumer community to develop a perfect, simple pocket guide to fragrance.

Givaudan created iPerfumer after connecting market and technological developments with a consumer need for guidance when buying perfume. Adam Smith: “After 18 years of working on The Chemical Brothers live show we have finally captured it on film; you could almost say it's 18 years in the making The aim was to create a different type of concert film for a different type of show. I wanted to capture what it is like to experience the show from right in the middle of the crowd as well as showing and combining the visuals featured in the show with the footage we captured on this one night; to see how the music and visuals emotionally affect and connect with the audience. So, 2011 saw me once again completely fail to stick to my new years resolutions. Not only did I continue to brutally squeeze my many constellation-like formations of spots, I still moisturized far too infrequently, and left my tresses untouched for an almost unthinkable amount of time. In fact last summer I ended up picking up the nickname Bob Marley - not for my ability to produce Reggae classics, but thanks to my impressively matted mane, one that resulted from the onslaught of summer festivals and their associated lifestyle. To avoid having to try and construct some sort of acceptable style with my unmanageable straw-like tresses during the party-heavy festive period, I booked myself into Smooth You. I hoped/prayed their healing hands would counteract all my neglect and wrong- doings of the past year, just in time for my first Christmas shindig.

A mostly pleasant walk from Angel Tube station, the main salon doesn’t really showcase any show-stopping artistic flair, nor is it particularly unique in style, but it is light, airy and clean... and these are qualities that shouldn’t be sniffed at. As soon as I came into the gleaming white space I was greeted by a perfectly groomed lady and asked whether if I’d like a refreshment. They have various exciting options - even Champagne if you are so inclined on a weekday morning. My sensible/boring water arrives with a tasty treat.. and anything food-like, with the bonus of it feeling free is always a good addition in my books!

From the off Senior Stylist Steven could see my hair was in dire need of some tender lovin’ care, particularly after its first ever dye session at the beginning of last year, one which appeared to have sucked all the moisture out of it’s former glory. He opted to give it a treatment before getting going on the cut. Prime Plenish was used to strengthen my weakened hair, with the Muroto Volume treatment adding much needed oomph to my hair. I have always loved the over the top glamour of big hair, I’m not one for that sleek wet look that’s all the rage on the catwalks at the moment - mainly because it would expose my oversized ears!

Now, massage chairs are one of those things that sound fantastic, but it isn’t always the case - with bias I completely concur with Ryan Goslings opinions in Crazy Stupid Love. In the past I have found the intended relaxing movements far too vigorous and intrusive. But todays chair was so good that Mr Sandman found an opportunity to pay a visit. Combined with Stevens second to none head massage.. we’ll say no more!

We are all aware of the stereotype of hairdressers and their unrivaled ability to chat. On occasions it’s merely a to and fro of banal chat, with the odd frivolous question regarding X Factor or the Soaps. Occasionally it’s an all out therapy session. With Steven it just felt like I was chatting to a friend, a lovely and interesting one with the handy ability to transform my looks. I even came away with some great music tips! It has been a fair few weeks since the treatment and style, and despite the fact I am yet to take Stevens advice on more appropriate shampoos and conditioners my hair still feels like the softest of angel hair. And Steven, if you are reading this I promise to get the ends trimmed more regularly than usual!

I had first visited Smooth You a few months back to celebrate their launch, joining the team for a tour and quick restyle - while indulging in champagne and canapes of course. Despite it’s many winning qualities, I voiced concern about its location. I had worried its situation off the beaten track would hinder it’s success. I’m most pleased to have been proven wrong. One hint to their future success should have been the owners Patrick and Luma Mitchel. The exotic stare-inducing Luma, has many years experience in fitting hair extensions, having run several successful hair extension salons in San Paolo. She also serves as a perfect advert for her craft. Patrick completes this perfect partnership with his stunning track record in business and finance.

They must have had a feeling they were on to a winner, and it would appear that positive word of mouth has done the trick. Smooth You are now in the lovely position where they are able to expand, opening two new salons this year. They will still keep it a boutique in feel, but reveal different lines within ‘Smooth You’ brand. i.e a floor for Smooth Hair, a floor for smooth Beauty and a section for Smooth Extensions. Steven also revealed some other exciting developments within the salon including the recent collaboration with the BEFFTA Best hairstylist 2011 winner – Eugene Davis. The superstar stylist, who has worked with the liked of Aaliyah, Mary J Blige, Gillian Anderson and Lil Kim to name but a few, will be joining the team twice a week as a Wig Expert and Creative Stylist. Interview With Jay James Picton

Whether or not Jay James Picton's musical output to date has appealed to your personal taste, it is undeniable that his journey to get to this point has been an interesting, and unpredictable one. Just a few years ago he was personal training within the Navy. He paid very little attention to music, and had next to no knowledge of legends and icons, let alone the current stars of the industry - I will let Jay James tell you via our interview below what series of events lead him to his current position as an extremely busy singer/songwriter.....

Seeing that his current scenario is in part down to serendipity, unforeseen circumstances and coincidence, his future career is likely to be one littered with surprises. Although if you have witnessed his soulful tones, you could be forgiven for saying that fate has had a heavy hand in nudging him towards the stage.

Now, I don't want to appear too hyperbolic or gushy, but if his raw talent for singing had remained undiscovered it would have been travesty! Thankfully, however accidently, he found this new career path, and he is now finding his feet within this highly saturated and competitive industry. He is happy to admit that not all aspects of his new role have come completely natural to him. But one area where he appears to flourish is with his writing of personal and exposing lyrics. It is not uncommon, but a strange phenomenon that many artists found it tricky to express themselves prior to their musical endeavors - he is most definitely a prime example of this. But this new, and healthy clarity definitely makes for a winning formula. There are artists, like Adele and Amy Winehouse, that find success not just for their stunning vocal abilities. Their willingness to translate personal heartbreak into music, and most devastatingly through lyrics, is what has cemented them in hearts of the CD/Download buying public. Speaking of both the touching and turbulent facets of a relationship, in a manner that everyone can relate to in some way will get you so far, but knowing that it comes from a real place is what will really draw audiences in.

Through his three part music film Heads vs Hearts, he has not only found a visual way to showcase his impassioned music, the sounds accompany a stylishly constructed love story, featuring issues most of us have faced in one way or another in past/present relationships.

Signed to Decca alongside previous Culture Compass interviewee Jodie Marie, he will likely be granted the freedom to develop organically, rather than being moulded into the 'perfect popstar' by some big boss like figures with money signs in their eyes . He doesn't want to be told what type of artists he is or what genre to perform, and it feels like to the formulation of Jay James Picton the artist is still an exciting work in progress.

Yesterday I sat down with the tattooed singer in amongst the designer garb of the Cavalli Room at Purple Pr HQ. As well as talking about his obscure journey so far, we chatted about working with the legendary Booker T, being authentic, his upcoming dates with Rebecca Ferguson, and making his debut album.. as well as his suitably ambitious hopes for festival season!

I'm not a gambling woman, but I would be happy to put a large chunk of money (if i had any) on the fact that this chap is going to be a rather big deal. So wise up and catch him on the way up!!

Hostel III

If Im deathly honest I’ve never been particularly into horror movies, mainly because I don’t scare easy and it therefore seems a bit pointless to sit down and watch a movie whose main intention is to do just that.

But despite my preference for realistic dramas and dry comedies, I have watched more than my fair share of this particular genre, mainly because of that inconvenient thing that comes with relationships... Compromise. I don't know whether a large percentage of males revel in gore or whether it has just been the type of guys I go for, but every person I've dated have loved spending an evening feasting there eyes on these grim and gory tales.... and the more disgusting and vulgar the better!

When I saw a invite in my inbox to take part in a Hostel endurance challenge I though pfft! A challenge, we'll see! So Tuesday I dragged an unwilling plus 1 to the Clink Prison for said event, a night heralding the launch of the third installment of the Hostel franchise.

To me there’s no point in making sequels, particularly horror sequels, if they don’t exceed the prior outings in one way or another. So it's gotta be more ridiculous, with more cameos, more nudity or with most revolting and inventive ways to torture and kill. The new Hostel definitely accomplished upping the gruesome factor.... but I won't give away how!

The latest terrifying chapter in the Hostel franchise, Hostel: Part III debuts on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download January 23 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

The film contains even more disturbing and shocking moments than its predecessors, bringing the underground world of the notorious Elite Hunting Club to “Sin City,” where human torture has been turned into a high stakes gambling opportunity. The cast includes Thomas Kretschmann (Wanted, Resident Evil: Apocalypse), Brian Hallisay (TV’s “Privileged”), Kip Pardue (Remember the Titans), John Hensley (TV’s “As the World Turns”), Chris Coy (TV’s “True Blood”), Skyler Stone (TV’s “Raising Hope”) and Sarah Habel (Whip It).

If any of you read my New Years Resolution post or follow my Tweets (those of you who don't why the devil not?? follow @SophieEggleton), then you will be aware that I am attempting to become a fitter version of myself this year. I know, I know, it's something a large chunk of the population aim to do at the beginning of every new year... but I really mean it this time. So I am into the fourth week of attending the gym now and I am already starting to see some positive affects. Not only am I sleeping better and generally less grumpy then usual, I am starting to see definition on my stomach! I'm not quite Flavia or Jet from Gladiators yet but it's definitely a good start! But I have a feeling my squidgy thighs and bum are going to be a bit more stubborn.. but I do enjoy a challenge!

I have to say that I have probably been doing my taste-buds a massive disservice by disregarding similar products in the past, as I have to confess to finding the White Tea option absolutely delicious! Kit Kat are currently on the hunt for the UK's ultimate Kit Kit Chunky Flavour. What a mighty, but gloriously frivolous challenge to undertake. Well I say frivolous, but only when comparing it to the mammoth world-changing decisions being made in the stressful world we live in today. In my world, the ditzy Sophie bubble, this is probably factoring quite high on the list of important things to do...

So the team have called upon some experts to help them crown the champion. Not to blow my own trumpet or anything, but by picking me as one of their 'experts' they have chosen extremely well. I am distinctively average at most things, but man do I know my chocolate. As a youngster my parents were fairly strict when it came to fast food, sweets and chocolate. So when at school I would make the most of being away from the watchful eyes of Mum and Dad - monopolizing the vending machine or getting my daily fix from the station shop. The man who owned the shop soon named me 'Malteser Girl'. If on a rare day I walked past without purchasing 8 pieces of confectionery he would shout, rather loudly ' no chocolate today miss?" Now I'm not sure this is an anecdote I should be proud of, but in terms of proving my worthiness as a Kit Kat expert, it seems pretty effective.

So here are my findings from sampling the nominees....

Chunky Orange - Now you are either a fan of the legendary choc/orange combo or you're not (the 'not' people are generally very ill- advised human beings). I most definitely fall into the first camp. I have enjoyed consuming many a Terry Chocolate Orange in bed on an Xmas morning, before even attempting to get dressed and make it downstairs to greet the family. Apart from the ease of being able to eat it, a segment at a time, avoiding the dreaded mucky melty chocolate mouth, there isn't really any other reason for it to be separated into parts. The end the result is always the same for me. I will be eating it in one, very swift sitting. I may as well eat it as if it were an apple, a more delicious calorific one. Anyway I digress - I think you can tell I am a chocolate fiend- but while I did enjoy this particular version of the winning marriage, it was not the best of it's type. Perhaps it was a bit too subtle in flavour. I might have to eat a few more to make sure I have this right!

White Chocolate - The generous soul I am I decided to let my parents help on this task. Before we embarked on our group taste test we flagged up an issue with White Chocolate. It's another very personal thing - a lot of people find chocolate at the pale end of the spectrum a bit sickly. But too sickly and too sweet are statements that don't really factor in my world. I know my arteries are probably screaming at me, begging me to say no to the sugary temptations I'm greeted with everyday, but it's never going to happen. We have to be realistic.
Rich, Creamy... divine! If one of the other flavours wasn't in existence this white chocolate glory of a treat bar would be a very worthy victor. This was actually my parents favourite of the four.

Double Chocolate - For a chocaholic the name of this flavour is probably enough to force those endorphins to get wurring round the body. I don't think that my ceiling point in terms of chocolate consumption is akin to the national average, so I could eat a couple ( or 4 ) in a go , but I can imagine the rich nature of this one might be a bit much for your average chocolate eater, only allowing them to one at a time, Being rich isn't exactly a negative, but just a notable fact. This flavour makes for a very indulgent time.

Peanut Butter - When I saw the list of options I had a feeling this would be the one to steal my heart... and eager tongue. I have always enjoyed the combination of sweet and savory - I once had an intoxicating summer romance with those chocolate covered pretzels. As soon as I took the first bite I felt my heart flutter. I knew that if it had little arms jutting out from it's chocolate body, they would be lifting the winners trophy. But it's not just the flavour that makes the nutty one the victor. The texture of this one, that bit of a softness in the mix, adds that comforting feeling we looking for in our sugary snacks. So I know I have found a new favourite chocolate bar, but it will be interesting to see if it persuades me to questions my love for my beloved Reeses Pieces/Cups. I have a sneaking suspicion that it may just do it!
