2015 PRIZE GIVING DAY HELD

It was a beehive activity on 29/01/2016 at SOS HGPS Mombasa when the entire fraternity gathered for the annual prize giving day. It has become a routine since the first attempt of KCPE exam in 2005 whereby student are motivated in various disciplines where they portray Excellency. The event is organized by Parents Teachers Association (PTA)

Prizes ranging from shopping vouchers, cash money, trophies and certificates were awarded to both teachers and pupils who perform exceptionally well last year in both academic and co curricular activities

The chief guest was the Deputy County Commissioner Mombasa who happens to be one of the parents at school. In her remarks, Mrs Mwaniki emphasized on the need to cultivate unity and togetherness despite divergent political, religious or geographical inclinations, intimating that school going children hardly know or embrace their ethnicity as the adult do. She urged parents to emulate their children because negative ethnicity is a prerequisite to hatred even blood shed.

On the other hand the school principal appreciated the good work done by teachers and the 2015 candidates .She acknowledge that the school did not reach its set target and indeed a decline from the last two years` performance. She however said that the school has really embraced honesty in exams and tried to treat a new cohort of student as unique in terms of abilities .She further urged parents to be cautious when selecting secondary schools for their children by considering their abilities and determining the probability of being selected by the schools chosen. She reiterated that many students miss getting vacancies despite scoring good marks because of inconsiderate choices.

The event was characterized by entertainment whereby students performed poem and skits with many lessons to learn and tackling emerging issues in the society .The standard 5 pupils left the congregation in stitches in their skit entitled ‘All Play no work makes jack a dull Boy ‘The skit was meant to educate parents on the need to be extra careful when selecting schools for their children at their formative stage.

Meanwhile , the second and third overall best students in last year’s KCPE Victor Jao and Fatuma Fuad respectively , have been admitted to the prestigious Moi High School Kabarak.They will join the 2013 Overall best student Hussein Fuad who has really marketed SOS HGPS school because of his exemplary performance and character that when the parents of the two students sought fpor admission request, they were readily accepted.

THE PRESIDENT`S VISIT

It was a beehive kind of activities on the 23rd and 24th of May 2014 when the new SOS president Mr. Siddhartha Kaul paid a courtesy call to the Mombasa project. The president and his entourage arrived at around 10am and received a warm welcome from the Mombasa project family .

The guests also were entertained by learners who presented different items in praise of SOS organization for the great effort it does to see that the less privileged children in the society are given sufficient care. Learners from the school also entertained the guests by portraying their taekwondo skills which really amazed the guests.

The following day, the president had a length chat which the Mombasa staff whereby he elaborated on what the organization is intending to do in his term in the office. He reiterated that the organization is still committed to giving education and health services to children because the management feels that inasmuch such services are supposed to be offered by the respective government where the organization has projects still there is a need for it to dedicate resources on the same , being very essential social rights .

The star of the week

This is a special segment meant to recognize outstanding performance of learners, teachers and support staff in different field inside and outside school.

In this edition, our focus shall be on Hussein Fuad .He was the best candidate in the school in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education(KCPE).The boy managed to score 415 marks and was admitted to the prestigious Moi High School Kabaraka.

Immediately he arrived in Mombasa for his April holiday, the very first place he visited was the school in order to express his appreciation to the teachers for the good preparations they made to him which enabled him acclimatise to secondary school life very fast.

Hussein`s thirsty for education and excellence did not end in primary. In the three exams they did in form one in first term, he managed to score straight As in all the subject and commanded position one throughout the term! coincidentally, Hussein happens to be in the same class with the best overall candidate in last year KCPE exam countrywide who scored 444 marks. Ironically, the boy trailed Hussein and only managed to secure position 44 out of 342 students in form one.

He asserts that students who are drilled for exams will find it difficult in secondary school since such an approach is not applicable. He adds that he has experienced situations where students who scored higher marks than him performing dismally due to poor study habits subjected to them during their primary level.He commends the teachers for the good work they with a parting shot: what matters most is the quality and not the quantity.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD.

The annual general meeting was held at the school on the 29-3-2014 .The meeting provided an opportunity for teachers and parents to interact and share the progress of the school for the last one year.The principal of the school, Mrs Gladys Juma took the opportunity to highlight on both the success and the challenges that the school faced in last year. Parents appreciated the good work done by both the teachers and the students and at the same time registered their disappointments on areas they felt were not adequately done. Issues such as :teachers -parents relationship ,school performance, general discipline, school transport and many others were discussed.

On the same note, the long serving PTA chairman Mr.Askul, hung the boots after serving the association for six years.Mr.Askul will be remembered as one of the very ambitious PTA chairmen the school has ever had because of his enormous contributions .He really propelled the association to very great heights .Particularly he will go in books as the leader who boosted the working morale of the teachers by introducing a very elaborate reward criteria to those teachers and learners who performed excellently in KCPE.

Since the time for the PTA Committee had expired, parents were obliged to elect new class representatives to run the association.Mr.John Thoya became the new PTA chairman while Mr.Zawadi Ndapatani was elected as the treasurer.

THE WORLD MATEOROLOGICAL DAY MARKED.

SOS Hermann Gmainer School Mombasa ,was privileged to host other schools and officials from the meteorological department in Mombasa to mark the world meteorological day on the 23-03-2014.

Candidates from three schools namely: KGS Joy Academy, Frere Town primary and the host gathered at the school where various issues pertaining to weather and climate where discussed.The theme of this year`s celebrations:Climate Change Engaging the Youth, was meant to sensitise young people on the need to conserve the environment since the climatical changes entirely depended on the environmental factors.At the same time, the day gave an opportunity to the officials of the department to have their first visit since the time they identified SOS school to be one of the rainfall collection center a year ago. They appreciated the work done by the science department to insure that rainfall records reached them at appropriate time daily.

EXEMPRARY PERFORMANCE REGISTERD

SOS hermann Gmainer school Mombasa did very well in the recently released KCPE examination .The first student managed to score a total of 415 marks out 500 marks.most of the candidates managed to score 350 marks and above ,which enabled the school to attain an average of 348 marks,just two marks less the 2012 results.

Interestingly, Kiswahili language was the best performed subject with a mean score of 75% .It has never happened so in the school since previously Kiswahili used to record the lowest grades as compared to most of the subjects.

Madam Elizabeth Matekwa ,the teacher of kiswahili who happened to double as the class teacher attributed the good performance to hard work,good guidance ,close monitoring of learners ,exposing learners to quality exams and above all seeking for Divined intervation from God.

The star of the week

This is a special segment meant to recognize outstanding performance of learners in different field

inside and outside school.

In this very first edition, our focus shall be on a standard seven girl by the name Diana Njeri. The twelve year old girl has really portrayed vey great prowess in drama. In the just ended Mombasa county drama festival, the school was privileged to stage a play entitled `The laptop` whereby she was acting the main character-Kahindi .Despite the fact that the character in the play is a male, this did not deter her from
performing extraordinary well. What really amazed her trainers, was the rate at which she could grasp the script.As a matter of fact, initially she had been assigned a different lesser role but when the actor to act Kahindi failed to turn up for training, Diana with the great passion she has in drama ,could not wait for the whole play to go up in smoke , she volunteered to take the task . Within a week she had grasped the lines an ability which amazed Mr. Kizito Ochieng ,the chief trainer.

Diana is a mufti-talented girl in co -curriculum activities. She has a lot of passion in music and ball games. She attributes her interests to her mother who always encourages her to nurture her talents in conjunction with academics. The mother is also a career music trainer, hence having a good background.Academically, she performs equally well. She always scores above average.

A meteorological center started at the school

Hermann Gmeiner school Mombasa has been identified as one of the meteorological centers within Mombasa, meant to update about the rainfall amount within Mombasa. 'The department has set a rain gauge within the school compound whereby the amount of rainfall collected every day is read and communicated to the tally center ,on a daily basis.

Apart from being a collection center the project has also created a very good avenue for learning subjects like Social Studies and Science . It is a common practice to note teachers assembled at the rain gauge with learners discussing one or two aspects of rainfall and weather.

KUTIN VISITS AGAIN

For the last three consecutive years the SOS Mombasa had been receive a rare privilege of hosting the organisation`s president(now retired),Helmud Kutin.This year too was not exceptional as he visited the projects in Mombasa on the 22sec March 2012. .He was accompanied by a number of dignitaries most of whom were the leading donors to the organisation

In his entourage too,were the Kenyan national director Ms Ruth Okowa,the chairman to the board of trustees Dr. Martin Oduol among others.

The day was marked with entertainment from Herman Gmeiner school led by the drama club members and the school choir.In his speech ,Mr. Kutin appreciated the good work done at the school and encouraged the staff and the pupils to continue in the same spirit.

GESTURE OF PHILANTHROPY DEMONSTRATED

When the standard five student of Hermann Gmeiner Mombasa realised that one of their classmates -Vincent Omondi had spent almost a week absent from the school it pained them to know what was happening to him.After interrogating their class teacher Mr. Thomas Odeny ,it downed to them that Vincent was taking care of his three siblings after their mother had fallen sick(she later passed on after a week in hospital)).They took the initiative of making donations in terms of :food stuffs , clothing and a number of other household item which they presented to the family .

A few representatives from the class and the teaching staff visited him at their home on the 15th of March purposely to give out the donations and encourage him and the family at large.it was evident that Vincent and the family live in abject poverty from the observation of the immediate environment.

He is under the bursary scheme offered by the organisation as facilitated by the Family strengthening Programme,but more often than not Vincent is unable to meet all the necessary provisions to enable him school smoothly.sometimes the family cannot afford to raise forty shillings for his transportation to and from the school, an expense not catered for by the bursary.

PEACE CARAVAN

The SOS mombasa project joined other institutions in Mombasa in a peace caravan meant to sensitise people about the essence of maintaining peace during the forth coming elections.The event was flagged off by the principal of Hermann Gmainer school Mombasa at the SOS Children Village Mombasa on the 26th of February.The event was sponsored by organisation in conjunction with:Mombasa Aviation college,Sheik Sayyid Children`s home,Modern Coast Bus Services ,Uniq driving school, among others.

The caravan transversed through Mtwapa,Shanzu, Bamburi ,Kisauni, Mombasa city,Bombululu and back to the starting point-Mombasa village . The standard six pupils who represented the school preached peace by displaying placards with peace messages during and after the elections.The commentator ,Mr. Mbaluka one of very accomplished Kiswahili teacher kept on reminding the residents on the need of maintaing peace insisting that it is the citizens who will decide to maintain peace since violence is very costly.

THE ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING DAY HELD

It was a beehive kind of activities at the school on the 9th of February, when parents teachers ,learners and a number of invited guests congregated for the annual prize giving day.The event organised by the PTA is meant to recognise those ones who perform exceptionally well in

different events from academics to co-curriculum activities.

The chief guest of the event was the depute national dictor SOS Chilren Villages Kenya-Mr.Kanjwang`.in his speech he empasised on the role on the parents in education matters of theitr children.he further acknowledge the excellent work done by the school to ensure that learners get very qualitative educationb.he joined hands ith the rest of the stakeholders in congraturating the 2012 KCPEcandidates for the good performance.her further gave shopping vouchers to the best performers , the teaching and non-teaching staff of the school.

On his part, the chairman to the PTA Mr.Askul promised that he will continue supporting the teachers and suggested that soon the committe will come up with a new motivational criteria which will be more inclusive than present.

VALENTINE DAY MARKED

One of the very interesting pattern in the SOS Hermann Gmeiner Kindergarten school Mombasa, is that: there is no any event in the calender which will go unnoticed.it is a common trend that learners get involved and sensitised in many global activities and events.

The Valentine day of this year is a clear proof of this assertion.Teachers, parents and children fully participated in marking the day.it was all red as learners and their teachers adorned in the valentine symbols.each learner was given a natural rose flower which in turn they presented to their parents.

One of the parents could not hide his joy as he received a flower from his three year old girl in KG1 called Sarah.He had this to say,`I `am delighted that my girl can express her love to me as a parent.I didn`t know that she knows anything about Valentine.

BEST PERFORMERS ADMITTED TO THEIR SCHOOLS OF CHOICE

The excellent performance of the first four overall best performer in the 2013 KCPE exam was rewarded. They were selected to the first national schools of their choice. This was announced when the school principal presented to them the calling letters, during the schools prize ceremony held on the 9th of
February 2013 at the school compound(see different story)

Brian Kirubai ,secured a place at the prestigious Mangu ,Maxcine Thenya captured Kenya high,Ann Njeri Alliannce and Lucky Katana bagged Starehee Girls.

In total eleven out of forty three candindates managed to secure places in National school ,while the remaining lot at least were admitted in the county schools countrywide.

THE 2013 KCPE EXAM RESULTS.

The 2013 KCPE exam results were received with a lot of jubilation at the school.The school performed exceptionally well,after posting a mean score of 350 marks.The best candidate , Brian Kirubai led the rest by scoring a total of 405 marks ,followed by Maxine Thenya with 404 marks ,while Ann Njeri, an habitual best performer managed to score a total of 403 marks .

Teachers and pupils could not hide their excitement as they flocked in a procession within the Nyali estate to celebrate the good performance.the convoy snaked from the school entrance all the way to Reef Hotel characterized with songs and dances.

Bursary sponsorship programme praised.

Have you ever been in a situation in which you are in dire need and from nowhere somebody comes in your aid? How do you feel? That is the kind of feelings that a girl by the time Hawaa Khalifa has towards SOS organization for its financial assistance which enabled her to complete her primary education at Herman Gmeiner school Mombasa. For the last eleven years she had been schooling at the school until last year when she sat for her Kenya Certificate of Education (KCPE). She managed to score a total of 333 marks out of 500 marks which is above average score .She attributes her success to the assistance she received from the school administration which decided to consider her as needy.

Hawaa comes from one of the marginalized areas in Kenya- North Eastern province where girls’ education is not considered necessary. When asked what she would like to be in future she never minced her words by declaring that she would like to give back to the community by becoming a social worker , and given a chance serve the SOS organization as one of the mothers in the village.

As if Hawaa' s guardian Angel is still keen on her education, she received another sponsorship from an organization called Verkaat, which has taken the burden of educating her in secondary school.

Apart from Hawa still the school currently as a number of students benefiting from the bursary scheme. This year another girl called Lucky Katana is graduating .Lucky is a very brilliant girl whose education could have come into jeopardy if it where not the intervention of the organization. Upon making home visit ,the school management team realized the potential in the girl and opted to make her join the school .when asked to comment about SOS ,SHE HAD THESE to say ,”Sincerely I don’t know what to say about this organization. Mine is to say a great thank you for your generosity.It has made me go through the primary education. I Promise not to let down all those who had been donating to the organization in its efforts to reach the under-privileged children by assuring you that am going to pass very well ,the only way I can show appreciation to you ”. Although not sure of her future fate of learning ,since the organization does not include the bursary programme in the secondary education ,she is still very optimistic that another miracle will happen which will make her realize her dreams of becoming a lawyer cum children’s rights activists.

The late professor Wangari Maathai was honoured by SOS-HGPS Mombasa on Friday 7th September 2011. The Standard Four Pupils led by their teachers Mr. Nyan'gondi and Mr. Ndekerere, took part in weeding and watering tree seedlings planted by the pupils themselves at the SOS village Mombasa.

They recited poems, sang, and made speeches in honour of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Ten year old Lucy Chepkemboi, Benta Karisa and David Macharia made very thrilling speeches praising the kenyan icon.

The most captivating performance was done by Joan Kavuli who composed an instant song in praise of the great professor.
