Triathlon results update:

So the day was here. I did the super-sprint at Clermont. It was a fantastic experience. I have been nervous for the last couple of days but now it's all done. I should be more relax for next event.

So how did I do?

Well... Not bad. But the event organization just wasn't there and it made my times relatively irrelevant. the Clermont Tri event has a "sprint" triathlon followed by a "super-sprint" triathlon. Problem is that, even though they start one event an hour before the second, there is a (large) segment of time when both events are going on at the same time. This led to extreme confusion. The confusion is from both the even participants and (worse) from the event volunteers. The end result is a group of us got lost during the bike race (completely lost, even to the point of waiting while an even volunteer radioed to ask for directions). We also got lost at the end of the race - during the run part - and eliminated about a mile of that time. The times below are, therefore, not representative for both the bike and run segments.

Swim:

On the swim segment I did really poorly. People who finished after me were really just waiting for their younger kids. I *really* need to train this area a lot more since this is, without a doubt, my weakest event.

On the transition from swim to bike I did very poorly as well - reason is I end up so tired after the swim that I spend a lot of time recovering and drinking/eating things to help give me energy for the next portion. I need to switch my attitude here so I have all the nourishment before hand. I also need to be a bit less wiped out after the swim. This is, again, an area where better training in the swim will result in a better result.

Bike:

The bike segment was OK. other than the fact that a group of us got really lost and had to wait for instructions from the volunteers I think I did OK here. I ended up racing for about 1 extra mile according to my bike computer. I also lost a few minutes being lost. Based on my cycle computer I should have done about 15mph on the bike *when moving*. The official results say I did about 11mph, *sigh*

Run:

Oh what a disaster here. I wasn't doing too bad. The bike to run transition was fairly short and I think I was hitting a 10:10 pace for the race - but after ~.5 miles the volunteer just sent me completely the wrong way... problem is.. I listened to him. I should have gone with my gut and just gone the way I thought the race path was - I would have been right. I heard stories from people who went on that path and did more than the expected 1.5 miles - again because of bad guidance from race volunteers. Right now I would have preferred having done that instead of what I did which was finish early. Oh well. Live and learn.

Official times: (ignore bike and run times):

Here are my official "chip time" results. The only valid one is the swim and tran1 times. Don't pay too much attention to the times after thant. On the "place" part, there were 14 male competitors. This means I finished 12/14 in the swim, 10/14 in the bike and don't even think that 2/14 is correct for the run. The bike time should have been about 5-8 minutes shorter. The run time should have been about 10-13 minutes longer putting me somewhere in the ~10-12/14 area. Hard to tell since other people also got lost on the bike and run segments.

Finish Time 1:00:37

Swim Time 5:20

Swim Plc 11

Trn1 1 Plc 12

Trn1 Time 5:26

Cum Time 10:45

Bad guidance after this point:

I did 1 mile more than I should have and had to stop a couple of times and backtrack asking for directions.

Bike Plc 8

Bike Time 41:30

Bike Rate 11.6

Cum Plc: 10

Cum Time: 52:15

Trn2 Plc 10

Trans #2 2:57

Worse guidance after this point: (did 1 mile less than I should have)

Run Place 2

Run Time 5:26

Run Pace 3:38

Had I had good guidance for both the bike event and the running event I *estimate* I would have finished in ~1:07 (erase 4 minutes from the bike time, but add 11 minutes from the run times). This does not meet my goals of how I wanted to finish (less than 1 hour), but near enough. My regrets are that I let myself be confused by the faulty information on my run. I should just have gone with my gut instinct and done the 1 extra mile, or done the 2.1 extra miles if the only path marked was the Sprint path.

What can I say... Nothing I can do now but enjoy the fact that I finished my chosen event. I still can't believe that when I started I couldn't even finish half a mile running!

Trialo update - August 3

Long time no update. Sorry. I went on vacation and stepped away from the regular rhythm for updating this blog. I did not stop the training although it was a bit more irregular than usual.

Some great progress to report on each of the exercises. As usual, swimming keeps being my weakest link, and I still need to get a road bike to assess better my times and effort for the activities. Running is going great, though. Much better than I originally thought it would be.

The BIG news for this week is that I went ahead and did a mock super-sprint on my own. Swam 200m, biked 9.76mi (goal was to do 8 miles but I got lost on the way) and ran (mostly walked) 1.5 miles. Nice! More below.

Biking

Still doing my biking on a mountain bike. In the past few weeks I've done both mountain (off road trails) bike rides - toughest was an intermediate trail in Atlanta ~4miles, but I also did some longer paved trail rides, including a 15 mile ride, but all of it on a mountain bike. I really miss the road bike and how fast you can go on that in comparison.

Running

I'm excited about my running progress. I'm up to jogging 2.5miles and still keep a ~10:10-10:15 minute mile pace. On 1.5 miles I am able to keep an under than 10 minute mile pace (not much less though...). I plan on keeping this up until I reach 5k (3.1miles). Once I reach that I'm considering if I should go then for increased speed or continue adding distance. Not sure yet what would be best for the triathlon goals. Leave a comment if you think one way or the other would be best. :-)

Swimming

Swimming... *Sigh* My nemesis. ;-)

Well..not quite nemesis. I *have* conquered the 200 meter swimming goal, but this is still done as a combination of freestyle, backstroke and sidestroke that ends up being SLOOOOOW and tiring. This by itself is not that big a deal. I am happy that I will be able to finish the 200 meters. I am a bit bummed out that I won't be able to make 400 meters by the end of summer, but that was just my stretch goal. That will just serve as motivation for me to keep training so I *can* do 400m by next spring.

What I am *really* frustrated with is that there is *SO* much room for improvement, and yet I don't know how to get there. I started timing my swims and my times for the 200 meters are about 9:30minutes. The *WORST* time for people that have done the past super-sprint races are ~4:30, with the best times being under 3 minutes. That is a HUGE difference from what I am able to do, showing how much room for improvement I have. Think about it. By the time EVERYONE has finished, I'll still have half way to go! I am *really* doing something wrong if my difference is that much.

The other problem is that I am *REALLY* out of breath by the time I finish the swim. That is not good at all for starting the bike segment. My swim goal for this last month is to work on my technique and improve the number of meters I can do freestyle. I'm kinda stuck there at the moment and I think that is definitely the biggest improvement I can do on my time to complete this segment.

Big news - trial trialo run (see what I did there...)

So I figured I am far enough along that I wanted to see if I would be ready for next week's race - even if I were to finish last on it. As I mentioned in my early posts I figured out that from the YMCA to the track is about 7 miles, so it was close to ideal for simulating the super-sprint race. I used google maps, and found an alternate route that would be just over 8 miles from the Y to the track. I planned to do the attempt early in the morning (same as what the race would be) but my pet got really sick this morning and I had to take him to the vet. I ended up starting my simulated race at close noon - on a really hot day in Florida. Oh well...

So how did it go...

Swimming: ~9:36. *sigh* how can I shave half of that time off?

Transition 1: ~ 9 minutes. This is really - really - slow, but the transition situation wasn't ideal. I would hope at the race it would be quicker to get to where the bike is at. Dunno... I have to work on this, especially the drying and changing into the biking gear. I wonder how this is done in the real race. I also took some time to drink some water and chug an energy bar. I should probably do the bar before the swim instead.

Biking ~46:27 minutes *BUT* it was 9.768 miles. I got lost - the path I was originally going to follow was actually blocked (damn google maps) so I had to turn around and go a different way. Assuming the same pace for 8 miles, time should have been ~38:10 which isn't stellar *BUT* considering this was done on a mountain bike, I expect to do better once I get on a road bike.

Transition 2: Don't really know. A couple of minutes to chug down a banana and some water. I ran out of water at this time. Big problem I need to fix. I also should have gotten into an energy bar before this time, when I was finishing the bike ride, to waste less time here.

Running: Uh oh.... I couldn't jog all the way. I alternated between jogging and walking but it was mostly walking. I believe the final time here was about 20 minutes, but unfortunately I don't know that I captured it correctly (my stopwatch said ~16xxx but I *know* that is not correct. I think it turned itself off sometime in the middle f the run. I had to stop mid way and get a granola bar for some extra energy. I could *really* have used more to drink in this part, or before. That is something I need to plan better for my next attempt and for the race.

Overall: A little under 1:30. Probably would have made it under 1:20 if I had not gotten lost. Still some ways to go from my goal of 1:00-1:10 to finish the whole thing. We'll see how it goes on my next test once I apply the lessons learned from this attempt. I will need more liquids and more energy bars or something like it during the bike and running segments of the race.

Now, I've said before that my goal is to finish the race - I don't plan to be first, and I don't (much) care about being the last one to finish. Well.. I'll admit that my machismo side knows I'll be a bit embarrassed if I'm the last to finish overall, which is where I would have finished had the race been today, but I can live with that... I'll just have to endure the ridicule of some of my friends for a while. What I do know is that a few months ago it would not even have been possible for me to finish, and today I was able to - even if I had to walk most of the last mile.

Well there it is... next week is the August version of the triathlon. I'll see if I sneak out early Saturday just to watch it and get a better idea of what I'm getting into. Maybe I'll learn something there that I can apply to improve my times - and maybe after the race I can go for a swim in the lake and see how I do in it. I'll let you all know how it goes next week.
Took a vacation and missed the last couple of updates but progress continues to be made although a bit slower than usual.
Trialo update - July 7

This was a good week overall for training. I was able to train in all three activities, biking three times, swimming twice and running once with one rest day. Good progress was made in all and I am still confident I can reach my goals by the end of summer. I have some extra time in the week coming up so I will schedule double workouts (morning and evening) at least a couple of days this week combining sports and maybe even try to do half the distances for all three activities on a single day (100 meter swim, 4 mile bike, .75 mile run). That should be informative I think. :-)

Biking

I biked three days this week ~4.75 miles twice and ~8-9 once. All on paved road, but on a mountain bike, once even under a light drizzle. I wasn't going extremely fast, but I put my time in. It was all done on a mountain bike. I can't believe how much harder it is to go fast on those big thick tires, but they do allow me to race under a drizzle and in wet, slippery roads without too much of a worry.

In any case, I miss the road biking speed. I'm going to order the road bike tires at the end of the month. I've been thinking about going with Continental Gator Hardshell or something similar. I'm looking for a tire that can resist the occasional glass or bits of metal on the road. If anyone has any other suggestions please put in the comments.

Running

I went only once but did 7 laps around the track! Wow! Nice going! It took me a bit under 20 minutes to finish which is about 11:30 minutes per mile (4 laps to a mile - I am trusting the track instead of the ipod nano). I am very excited about the progress here. When I started I could barely finish 2 laps. I'm well on my way to my 12 lap goal before race day, and once I reach that I'll look to see about improving the times to see if I can get to my 10 minute or less mile goal. Unfortunately running has been hard on my left knee and right ankle. This leads to a longer amount of recuperation time between runs. I may need to find a softer track to run on instead of the paved track I am currently using so i can run once every three days instead of now which is once every 4 or 5.

Swimming

Strong progress on the swim side. I swam 11 lengths (275 meters) at the pool. I also did my first lake swim. That one didn't go as well as I'd hoped. The coldness of the water came a bit as a shock until I got used to it, and I could never get used to putting my head in the green lake waters. Heh. It's all psychological at this moment, I know. At the lake I was able to swim for ~8 minutes straight (combined all strokes). I don't quite know what the equivalent distance was, but my estimate is that should have been about 150 meters or so. My time goal is to be able to swim continuously for about 12 minutes.

At the lake I also tried doing the breast stroke. It wasn't pretty. I must be doing something terribly wrong since I don't think i moved an inch while trying. I'll have to youtube breast stroke technique and see what I was doing wrong.

Not having lap lanes really showed the problems I will run into if I try to swim backstroke for any extended period of time. I kept going off-course to my left without realizing. I will need to figure out why I am leaning towards the left. I guess my right arm is that much stronger? Or, maybe, I just lean naturally that way?. Maybe I'll take a video and see what I am doing and how to compensate to turn to the right during lake swims. I also need to get past my psychological hurdle about face in the water and get better at breathing.

This week and next my goal is to improve on the swimming technique. I will work on keeping my head inside the water, breathing out while in the water and turning my body and head to be able to breath in without pulling my head up. I will not concentrate too much on increasing the distance for now. I'm sure once I figure out my breathing issues I should be able to do the 12 minutes of swimming and possibly more.

Trialo Update - Jun 30

Tri update Jun 30

Nice improvements this week, although I wasn't able to exercise every day I should have. I can blame it on the afternoon rains, but... I know I need to make a better effort to exercise at alternate times to avoid the Gainesville afternoon showers. It *will* rain sometime in the late afternoon - and I need to plan around this.

Biking:

Start with the easiest update - no biking this week. :-(

I need to get the road bike fixed up so I can bike from home to work - or I need to just plan a day to get my boss' mountain bike in the afternoon and bring it back next day. I know biking is the event that worries me the least, but I still need to make sure I put my time in.

Running:

I went and got a new pair of shoes Brooks Adrenaline GTS 13 at Gainesville Running and walking store. Oh what a difference! My old Asics were so worn out it was like walking on a pair of plastic slabs. Now I feel like I'm in that Dr Scholl's Gellin commercial. Nice.

With my new shoes I ran two days this week. A lot less calf pain but I still get a very stiff ankle and my knees hurt a lot the next morning. *Sigh*. I read somewhere that the aerobic conditioning improves faster than muscle/ligament can so it is easy to overtrain without thinking you are. This is probably what is happening to me. First run day I was able to do almost 5 laps around the track! Nice! Second day I wasn't at the track so I can't measure distance, but I was able to jog for 20 minutes! Fantastic considering at the start I was completely out of breath after less than 5 minutes!

I plan to go to the track on Tuesday so I'll post a quick update of how many laps I'm able to do there in the 20 minutes.

Swimming:

I, unfortunately, swam just once this week. But... Oh happy day!

Taking a queue from what my son was able to accomplish by alternating front crawl and back stroke, I decided to try for the full 8 lengths (200m). I also read that I should try to do so *without* touching the walls (stopping just short - at the final black line) to simulate the environment for open water swimming (no walls to hold-on to or push off of in a lake). What a challenging swim, but I was able to do 2 front crawl, one backstroke, one front, one backstroke, one sidestroke, one backstroke, half front, half backstroke! Full eight lengths! NICE!

Turning was *extremely difficult*. I felt like I was going to drown a couple of times there as my body sank when I was vertical with my feet down halfway through my turn. There is not a lot of space to turn by going sideways as if it were a real semi-circle, so I was trying to invert myself somehow and my upper body didn't seem to have the strength to keep me afloat. Once I was horizontal I had no problems continuing the swim, but I need to work on this turn part. I know at the lake it is unlikely I am going to need to do this, but I think this will help me just with staying afloat if I ever need to rest.

I have two competing goals now: Continuing to go up in the number of lengths I'm able to do, and continue to improve the number of front crawl lengths I can do. My goals for this week is to do 4 front crawl and 4 back/side stroke - IDEALLY more side strokes than back strokes. We'll see how it goes, but the mere fact that I was able to swim 200 meters, without any support or rest was EXTREMELY encouraging! I'l try to improve at least one front crawl lap per week. I assume once I get the hang of it I should be able to improve 2+ front crawl laps per week. As for my second goal, I plan to just keep going doing an additional length per week either side or back stroke. If I can keep doing this I expect to reach 16 lengths alternating front and side stroke a couple of weeks before the race. I'll try to keep this pace, but I'll slow down if I feel I am stressing my muscles too much to avoid any overtraining injury.

Tri update Jun 23

This week saw both improvement and doubt creep in. I can't believe that it's just a bit less than 11 weeks for my target race day(* Up to now I thought it was 10 weeks so I gained a week by going to look at an actual calendar. Heh.)

My improvement this week was encouraging. If I keep the pace of improvement up I'm sure I'll be able to hit the goals for the mini triathlon - maybe even with a few weeks to spare!

On the other hand - I'm still so far away from being able to complete the swimming or running portions *by themselves* that it is pretty scary. I just have to keep on going and trust the training.

Running:

I was able to complete a bit over 4.5 laps. My improvement here is good and if I keep up the 10-15% improvement per week I should be able to hit 6 laps in 2-3 weeks, 8 laps in 5-6 weeks and around 12 laps (twice as much as I *think* I need) by the week before the event. that would rock! If I hit 12 laps I'll sign myself up for a 5k sometime in October or November.

The one concern is that I consistently have pain in my <strike>left </strike>(I need to go back to kindergarden) right leg after running and even a couple of days later. One thing I *know* I have to do is change my running shoes which lost their compression/comfort a while ago. I'll probably hit a running store this week and get a new pair and see if this improves things or if I need to do some additional stretching or warm-up exercises.

Biking:

I did an 8 mile mountain bike circuit last Tuesday. That was TOUGH. I also rode ~4.8 miles on Thursday and Friday during the week and both were reasonable. I'm not worried about the biking part but it would be nice if I could separate some weekend times to go on a longer bike ride (15+ miles) and/or do a combined swim/bike or run/bike day. I won't worry about that, though, until I hit my goals for swimming or running.

Swimming:

I have been watching videos on swim techniques and I can now tell what I am doing wrong. My goal now is to work on it to improve this. I think once I fix my swim technique, combined with continued improvement on my aerobic conditioning, I should be able to progress to 200 meters fairly quickly.

I have improved my breathing technique. I am trying to swim flatter on the water, with my head inside the water most of the time, turning with each stroke and twisting to breathe instead of lifting my head. This is still a work in progress.

I am also working on my breathing. I need to get used to breath out inside the water, so I can use all the time my head is out of the water to breath in. This has been a lot more challenging that I thought BUT it has helped me considerably. I was able to do 2 full lengths (50 meters) in crawl, followed by two full lengths of backstroke and then about a third crawl, a third side stroke and a third back stroke. Not bad considering two weeks ago I couldn't even do two laps total!

The amazing thing was watching my son, who is in much better shape that I am, complete the full 8 lengths - 2 in crawl (and not quite flat in the water - so he can improve a lot on his technique), then 1 in backstroke, then two more in crawl and so on. He was really tired at the end, but ohhh... how I envy him. :-)

Still, swim training is going much better than I thought. If I keep up this pace I should hit 100 meters probably in two weeks or before, and hit 200 meters by week 6 or 7 - leaving me with 3 or 4 weeks to build up on that. Nice. I just hope I can keep it going at the pace I am currently and that i don't hit a bump.

Triupdate - all sports + Father's day

Tri Training

So last week was encouraging. I still have a long way to go, but I'm making progress.

Running: I reached my goal of 4 laps without stopping (1 mile). Unfortunately my right calf was very tight and hurting by the end of the week so I may have overdone it. I rested it for 3 days now and it feels much better, but I may need to take it easier on it while increasing the distance. I'l still strive for half a lap improvement per week This should be about 10-15% improvement and it should take me to the goal of 6 laps by mid July, and my stretch goal of 9 laps by the end of August, 1 week before the tri. If I could do consistent 10% improvement per week, I'd be at 10 laps without stopping by the end of the summer!

10 % improvement: 4 4.4 4.8 5.3 5.9 6.4 7.1 7.8 8.6 9.4 10.4

Biking: I was able to run twice this week. I did a bit less than 5 miles each day. It was on a mountain bike which is considerably harder work than using a road bike. I am still figuring out what I need to do to repair my loaner road bike. I need tires, new cabling for breaks/shifters, and a new chain. I might need a new cassette. I am praying I don't need new cassette, shifters or new wheels. As it is it is probably around 200 dollars of parts and labor. (*sigh*). At least I don't have to buy a new frame.

Swimming: My weakest spot by far. I was able to complete 50 meters on my first swim of the day, the last ~15 by using the side stroke. After that, I decided to rest just a minute or two and do a length (25m)

at a time until I had done 8 lengths (200 meters total). I alternated, one length in regular crawl (or what passes for my crawl), switching to sidestroke when I felt out of air, and back to crawl to end the length. On the backwards length I did using the backstroke all the way. This allowed me to have a full "resting" length while still moving and forcing my body to work in the aerobic zone (or so I think). This is likely how I will have to do te race, some crawl, some sidestroke, some backstroke, so I will follow this approach during my training. I am very concerned that I can't do 50 meters completely in the crawl, but it's still early. My goal is to be abel to do 100 meters in crawl/sidestroke and 100 meters in backstroke, alternating, without resting by the end of the summer. I have about 10 weeks so I need to improve about 15 meters on average per week in the length I can go without resting. Hmmm...

Straight 15 meter per week improvement:

65(2+), 80(3+), 95, 110 (4+), 125(5), 140, 155(6+), 170, 185(7+), 200(8)

10 % improvement per week:

50 55 61 67 73 81(3+) 89 97 107(4+) 118 130(5+)

This is not going to be enough - that would leave me well short of the minimum distance

15% improvement per week:

50 58 66 76(3+) 87 101(4+) 116 133(5+) 153(6+) 176(7+) 202(8+)

This would hit it, though, so this is the minimum pace of improvement I must strive for. It looks tough to do, as the last three weeks I'd be adding a length per week. My physical condition *should* be better by then but I wonder about this.

20% improvement per week:

50 60 72 86(3+) 104(4+) 124(5+) 149(6-) 179(7+) 215(8+) 258(9+) 310(10)

This is my stretch goal. It is unlikely, but something to shoot for. I'll monitor my improvements and maybe add a third day of swim training per week.

Father's Day:

Today is my 12th father's day. I can't believe how time flies by. I'll see if I can use the father's day card so we can all go to the pool and I can see about starting that 20% improvement right away. Other than that, I might go to the track and run/walk for 20 minutes. According to the triathloning for mortals book I should be training for about 20-30 minutes 3 times per week, and 40-50 minutes twice per week. I certainly am hitting the short training times, but I have yet to have a long training day so I better get started.

In other, not triathloning related activities, I am a gamer (RPGs both computer and tabletop). I'll try to squeeze in a game with both my kids and maybe I can convince my wife to join us. Tough sell. I'll be using the Fate Accelerated Edition (FAE) rules, and a modified Bean D2 Adventure setting. I'm considering buying the Bean D2 RPG since he does good work on a very simple system, but I really like how Fate Core works and the focus on storytelling. We'll see how it goes after this session to see if I need a bit more rules structure or if the story aspect is enough to give us a pleasant game.

I have gamed with my son in the past - we used the Savage Worlds rules, which I like, but I could never understand how to make combat "fast furious fun!" It always ended up being "slow, long, frustrating" as it mainly consisted of "you hit, but do no damage". I know probably a veteran Savage worlder could tell me what I was doing wrong, but there was no such person available when I was playing, and the web wasn't that much help.

I also played D&D 4e with him. I found the character sheets we used then and it is just amazing the level of complexity compared to the FAE rules (or even the Fate Core). I'll post my thoughts on how this goes and if I need a bit of more structure (possibly going to fate core or to bean D2), or if FAE works well with us.

On my first attempt I was able to go about 40 meters before becoming too tired and needing to rest. I did a second attempt where I went about 35 meters and then 15 more using a backstroke. The backstroke allowed me to catch my breath, but it won't work for extended period of time during the race since it is very hard to control where I am going. I kept hitting the lane divider. I could see going way off course if I tried using this for an extended amount of time.

Nevertheless... I'm pleasantly surprised that I was able to go for longer than 25 meters before being completely out of breath.

I need to learn to pace myself (which applies to running as well) and I need to learn better swim techniques. Even when I try freestyle I have a hard time doing it in good form, keeping the head underwater. I try to keep my head above water most of the time, which allows me to breathe, but makes me work harder for the same distance.

Another suggestion from the book is to learn side stroke technique which might allow me to keep the head above the water while still keeping some sense that I am going in the right direction. I'll try practicing that next time I go.

On another note - turns out the choice for YMCA as a swimming facility will work nicely with my training. It's about 3 miles from work which should allow me to do bike-swim-bike workouts at lunch (or, once I am stronger running, I could try run-swim-run). It is also a little less than 8 miles from my home which will work nicely at the end of my training for being dropped at the Y, swim 200 meters, bike 8 miles home, then run a mile and a half from home. Coincidence? I think not!

Thriathlon goals

I've set myself the goal to run a super-fun-sprint triathlon at the end of the summer.

The event I've chosen has a 200 yard swim followed by an 8 mile biking race and finished with a 1.5 mile run.

This all sounds so easy when you think about it, especially when you compare it to an olympic-distance triathlon - 1.5k swim (~1640 yards), 40k bike ride (24.8mi), 10k run (6.2mi) - not to mention the "iron man" variety of triathlons (2.4 mi swim, 112mi bike ride, 26.2mi race) or the half iron man (you do the math).

The super-fun-sprint triathlon is a "beginner's race." It's not even an official (USA Triathlon Association) racing category, so you may say - "What a wimp! Go for the sprint!" (.25mi swim ~440 yds, 10mi bike, 5k run).

I don't blame you. I think the same way. But here's the part I know:

I could bike 10 miles.

I can't run even a single mile

I can't swim 25 meters.

Now - having confessed to the above, you may now think - "ARE YOU CRAZY? How are you going to swim/bike/run even the super-fun sprint if you can't even do the full distance of two of the events!"

You are right, of course. I can't now. My goal is to be able to do this by early September. I'm going to track my progress here and see how it goes.

My starting point:

Biking:

I've been biking on and off for about 3 years. My longest biking distance has been about 24 mile, not all straight through, I rested half way. I can easily do 5 miles in the bike, so I have no worries about doing 8 - or even 10 - miles if I push myself, even if I am a little tired. Currently I am doing mountain biking with guys at work - from 5-7 miles twice a week. I need to get a road bike since it's not quite the same, but mtn biking is actually more tiring - by a lot - than the same distance of road biking so I'm pretty sure this activity will server me well.

Running:

I can run from about half a mile before I have to stop and rest. Here I have conflicting information since they tell me that two loops in a race track is half a mile, but my ipod nano says it is a little over 1/3 of a mile. I'll have to get a definitive answer for this but let's just say I can do two loops before I am panting like a maniac. Depending on who is right, I need to be able to do 6 or 9 loops for a mile and a half.

Swimming:

I *can* swim, meaning I won't drown in a short distance, but I get tired easily. Obviously swimming is the biggest of my concerns. If I get tired in the race I can just walk for a while, biking is easy - you just coast when you are tired (assuming you are not going uphill)... Swimming.... Well.. if you get tired you drown. So I better not get tired. This is also the reason why the swim part is the first part - when you have the most energy of the day. This will definitely be the biggest challenge for me.

A secondary problem with swimming is that I don't have access to a pool - making training a bit of a logistical challenge. I've already researched this a bit and I can get a summer pass for swimming at the Y for a reasonable price. I'm going there later to see if this will work out or if it is too crowded.

Current point:

So the starting point was what I could do last week. Here's the update this week:

Biking - no progress

Our mountain biking sessions were rained out.

Swimming - no progress

I have yet to decide what to do to get access for a pool.

I've looked at the Gainesville city pool, sun country pool and the Y pool.

The sun country pool would be the best in terms of access (it's about 3 miles from my house and my kid already has to go there on saturdays for karate, but it's also pricey compared to the Y.

The Y pools is the cheapest but it is the farthest from home. It is fairly close to my work - so it could be convenient for lunch-hour swims - If I can get to it. Maybe I could bike there, swim, then bike back - that would be perfect although it would extend my lunch hour considerably.

The Gainesvile city pool at Westisde might be the most fun for my kids. It has a water slide! Unfortunately it is pricey compared to the Y, and it is the least convenient of the two options. (~346 for a family season pass vs 140 for the Y).

Running - progress!

The nice thing about running is the low overhead to doing it. I was able to go three times to the track this week and in just three visits I can now *almost* do 3 laps before I need to rest. That's almost 50% improvement from my starting point in just three attempts. If I keep this up maybe in a couple more weeks I will have reached 6 laps which - depending on who is right it's either a mile or the full mile and a half. Sweet!

I've also gotten the book Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals which is very entertaining and has some good ideas on how to get started. His focus is on the longer races, and he talks about training for 13 weeks. I have 15 weeks so if I'm serious, even with my starting point, I should be ready for the super-fun sprint. I'll keep track in this blog of my progress.. Who knows... maybe I could even surpass my goal and go for the full sprint by the end of the summer. The swimming should be the key so I better get started with that soon.

Next steps:

Goals for this week:

Reach 4 laps running

Bike at least twice in the week, at least 5 miles (mtn bike)

Get access to a pool and determine what is the longest swim length I can do to get my starting point.

I'll need to figure out what to do about a race bike. I have a loaner old aluminum bike that needs a lot TLC to get into racing condition but that is probably my best bet since I don't want to use a mountain bike loaner for this - or getting a loaner bike. We'll see.

Even now, 11 years later, it gives me goosebumps thinking about it. There is something strange and special about becoming a father for the first time. it is an incredibly moving experience that I highly recommend to anyone that has the inclination. :-)

On Saturday was my little girl's birthday (yeah, I know.. we are very careful now in February). I can tell you the second time around is as exciting as the first.

They say that there is a link between fathers and daughters and I can say it is absolutely true.

I love them so much that it is extremely hard to understand how some parents just don't care for their children. There is something in the human psyche that is probably gotten stronger through millions of years of evolution to create a bond between parents and children. It happened to me instantaneously the moment I saw them, and it continues to this day.

Now, if they would only listen to what you say... :-)

Restart

A friend of mine apparently wants to get into blogging. Shows you how much the people entrenched on their old ways (I'm looking at you MPAA and RIAA) are missing the point - FIGURE OUT how to use new media to provide a better product and buyers will come. Try different things. Don't be afraid of a new business model. AND DON'T BE GREEDY! Try to get a small portion of a huge market.

Also interesting:

Some younger readers have been exploring the classics, thanks to the availability of older e-books that are in the public domain — and downloadable free

The power of the public domain! It's ridiculous how governments keep extending copyrights without seeing the benefit to the population of having free and unrestricted access to the works of the past. Stocks have been incredibly negative in the last few weeks. I have had to stop my daytrading due to some heavy losses I took when the market instability started. It's too bad that I did not take full advantage of the good market for most of July. I only made some moderate gains that were quickly erased in late July/early August.

In other news, I have started a new contract in software development. If things go well it might turn into a more permanent arrangement. I like the company, product and environment , so I hope everything does go well in the next few weeks. Frankly, I need a steady paycheck right now since my stock market experiment has failed to realize the cash flow that I needed. Even so - I am very fortunate to have found an interesting opportunity here in Gainesville with a small company with a lot of potential. I was afraid that I would have had to settle for a sucky job or be forced to find a position in the Orlando or Jacksonville areas. Damn... I really make the (teh) same mistakes over and over. My guess is that it has to do with the order of the keys in the keyboard and the fact that I m a 3 finger in each hand typist - meaning I use only 6 of ten fingers to type - actually five - most of the time, now that I think about it - since I hardly ever use the thumb in my left hand.

Sorry about the spelling errors. I'll try to proofread this better before posting in the future.

I would like to know - how many fingers do you use when you type? I am fairly speedy, even with my 5 finger typing. I would imagine someone using ten fingers proficiently must relaly fly on the keyboard. Do you know how and why you type with the number of fingers that you do?

My guess - for me - is that my pinky and ring fingers are weaker so I never got around to using them when I was learning how to type. I never took any lessons for touch typing so my current typing method is due to what I found easiest as I was growing up. It makes no sense to me that I would use my middle fingers but NOT my ring fingers so I do not know how that really happened.

How do they do it

I wonder how other bloggers manage to post daily - some even creating multiple posts each day. It takes a lot of discipline and a lot of free time to be able to do that. Or maybe they have a lot to say and know just how to say it.

In any case, sorry that I haven't written more. I have been busy with day to day life. The stock trading hasn't been going very well, so there is not much I'd like to confess in that front. On the other hand, my wife and I finally got serious about exercise. We are exercising just about every day and watching what we eat. Overall in a little over a week I lost about 5 pounds and I am below 200 for the first time in a couple of years. Yeay! I've been trying to lose those 5 pounds for a couple of months now. I had lost about 13 pounds since January by exercising about 2 times a week, and increasing my physical activity with yardwork and such a couple of additional days a week. Unfortunately I hit a wall where my weight fluctuated from 202-207 for the past couple of months. Now we are doing high intensity/ short duration cardio exercise every day and this has finally broken the wall. I also feel great and with more energy. Highly recommended.

Now that I am under 200 (in the morning, at least) my next goal is to be 195 in the mornings (dehydrated) and 199 or less during the day. My long term goal is to reach 170-175 - which was my weight at my wedding. Check out my facebook if you want to see the difference from ~175 to ~210!.

I'll post more about my adventures in weight loss. In the past I have managed to go below 200 a couple of times (doing atkins worked for a while) but I always managed to gain it all back and then some more. Let's see if I can change enough this time to stay below 200 (and eventually below 180. I'll keep you posted. :-)

Consistency and schedule

I need to setup a schedule to post here. Unfortunately, my idea about posting stock picks goes contrary to writing about them. I examine the stocks "real time" and have to make decisions on what to buy/sell in an instant. Part of why I have been doing so poorly this month has been that I have hesitated on my decisions and watched stock go in the reverse direction of where I expected them. The same happens if I sit down to blog about it in the middle of the trading day.

I don't know what the answer is. I'd still like to blog about the stocks I am trading day to day, but really I need to focus on meeting my targets first.

In other news, I am happy to say that we are on our way out of debt following Dave Ramsey's method - specifically the total money makeover. I know Dave would be horrified at what I am currenlty calling my career - day trading - but he would be happy to know that we have cancelled 4 credit cards and should cancel a fifth one as soon as they update the acount information (tomorrow, I think).

It has been an interesting exercise. My wife and I had lived a basically debt free life for most of our married life. That is, everything was paid for every month except the house and the car. Unfortuantely, we got away from that when we did some remodeling to the house. I put that debt in 0% finance credit card offer and have been rolling that debt and some others along for about 3 years.

Well... we finally have decided to become debt free again. We are making progress but my "salary" from day trading has not been helping lately. This business has been extremely erratic, with some fantastic losses (~10k on some months) and some excellent gains ($16k on another month, but most months I manage to just break even or eek out a thousand or two).

I need to control my losses better. If I had done that from the start my monthly average would be much better. I am working on that, but the psycologic aversion of taking a large loss is very hard to beat. Maybe I'll post here as to how well I am doing rather than specific stocks for each day.

Oh - back on the credit cards. One unexpected benefit of cancelling credit cards is actually using the rewards points from each. I claimed about $500 in cash and gift cards from chase, and soon hope to claim about $100 more from sears (we don't use that account that much). I now realize the best reward is cash back. This happens automatically - with no effort from your part, and the cash back value is comparable to what you could buy with points. The exception may be in airline miles which could be used to purchase some extremely expensive last minute tickets - but frankly I hardly ever travel anymore. My main concern now is what to do so the airline miles do NOT expire.

Also on rewards programs - I checked the "value" you get from the rewards on some of my cards and it is *less* than the 1% you can get in cash back on some cards - definitely a losing proposition. I mean, when it costs 66,000 points for an ipod touch that you could buy for $300, you know you are getting a bad deal (that's about .46% reward on your money).

9:15... Gotta go check on the stocks for today.

OMG!

Today's long/short recommendations:

GGB short at 9.66 - I gave up on GGB, took a big loss and now I am shorting it. Guess what happens right after I short it? Yep. It goes down to 11.64, then starts climbing back up. I have a stop here, but I am looking for this to go down to 9.30s space. We'll see.

KND long at 12.02 - Another great pick for me in these last few days. I manage to pick this beauty up ticks before it goes to 12.05 and starts winding down. As I write this it is at 11.78 (I've got a stop loss at 11.72, and I was looking for this to gain a few percentage points over 12.).

Talk about being out of sync with the market. I don't know what is going on, but I am attracting the WORST possible stock decisions lately. It's ridiculous.

Update on the KND story - it hit my limit and sold at 11.70; Ridiculous. At least GGB started going down again. Let me see if I can short somethign else. Basically these days are BEAR market days, and my preference has always been for going long on stocks so I am getting KILLED.

Stocks for 2009-06-15

I've decided to use this space to post my stock recomendations from the day.

I, unfortunately, started in an awful day. The market is down, so any recommendations are for shorting stocks.

I take no responsibility for anyone following these stock suggestions. I am doing this mostly as a help to myself to identify which stocks I was looking for in any particular day.

Having said that, here it goes:

BAC - short at 13.6 ; Goal 12.92; Bought back at 13.3

HMA, long after it dropped to 4.75; Sold at 4.89 (after it dropping from 4.97)

MT - short at 33.46; Bought back at 33.4 (after it moved back up from 13.3X)

GPN - long at 37.9 (messed up there a little bit - currently down, but recovering)

GGB - long at 10.64 (messed up there big time - currently at 10.44)

Note - these are SHORT TERM recomendations - basically for daytrading only.

I really messed up on the long recomendations except for HMA. HMA went down ~10% in the morning, and this stock has already gone down over 20% in the last week or so, so I figured when it started recovering from 4.60 to 4.75, it would be a good time to buy. Unfortunately I got itchy and sold this at 4.89; It's currently over 5.

Similar story for MT. Currently is below 33.00; What sadness fills my heart. :-)

Ad No Sense

Hmmm.. The blogging experiment hasn't worked as I thought it would. :-(
Life gets in the way.

Summer has started. My two kids are out, and since I work from home, I have the double duties of trying to squeeze out some money out of the market, and trying to keep my kids from fighting with each other, or growing so bored that they start climbing walls or fighting with each other.

This is challenging, especially if you don't want them to watch TV or videos all day. I must admit they are watching many more videos than I would like. My little girl has seen the same video, over and over and over again since yesterday with very few interruptions. I keep telling myself that it's educational. It's a nick toons video, and they sometimes teach some things. Heh.

Now, I've taken them to ride their bikes, but it's REALLY hot out there. I've asked, more than once, for my eldest to read a book, and he finally started reading something about 5 minutes ago. I don't have a car so I can't take them anywhere until my wife arrives unless we go out walking, but the heat is amazing right now.

In any case, they both will go to summer camp next week where I hope they will have more fun than just hanging around the house all day.

As for me? I hope to retake the blog writing this summer. Let me see if I can get into some rhythm (now there's a hard word to spell).

So what have I been up to?

I've continued trading stocks. February was horrific, March started horrible and ended up ok. April was EXCELLENT. May was bad, but not horrible (thanks to April). June has started bad. We'll see if we can turn this around in what time is left. I guess my performance has mimic'd he overall market, but at a 2x beta (or is it .5?) I mean - my stocks have twice the volatility of the overall market.

June has been especially frustrating because it seems like I am completely out of step with the direction of the market. I'll sell something just to see it go up five minutes later (or even exactly the minute I sell! I buy something and it suddenly goes down. I don't know what's happening. It's completely the opposite of how things were in April.

Now, I must admit, I had a lot more capital available in April than I have now. I had to pay the IRS and other things so I don't have as much money to use for my trades. This affects things immensely since before i could try 3 different trading positions and sell losers while keeping winners. Now I have to close any positions if I want to open another position - and here's where things have not worked out.

Oh well... We'll see how it works out in June. I'll post here on how things go.

As an example of what I'm saying, I had a stock that I held over from yesterday. I had bought at X.61 and it had gone down to X.43. I held on to it thinking it likely to recover the next day. Well I was right... it did recover slightly, then moved back from slight recovery to loss and oscillated there for a while. Eventually I sold part of my stocks so that I could so something else with the freed money, but kept part in case it continued moving up.

Well - move up it did. I had an aggressive sell target for the remaining portion and it *almost* made it to my target! But then it lost some ground and ended up close to the break even point again. Grrr... Eventually it oscillated from some gain to break even, but it never made it back to the day's highs. I lost patience, and had some ideas of what to do with the money once I sold this so I closed the position with a modest gain. As soon as I close the stock shot up considerably, even surpassing my aggressive target in the next 10 minutes or so.

Now, you may say, but I gained some money and freed cash to pursue another position... Well yes... But the other position went down in value considerably so it would have been better not to even buy it at all! Extremely frustrating. All in all, the swing was probably a thousand dollars or more. Ufff...

Oh well... Gotta go.. I have 20 more minutes of trading and I am checking if the second purchase recovers or not.

Trading

This may sound weird but I think right now I've put my engineering career on hiatus while I pursue stock trading full time. This sounds especially crazy if you read my post from November 17 (When it rains) in the midst of the crash. So, what made me change my mind?

Well.. A few things. For one I no longer have a full time job, and my job searches in November and early December did not manage to land an appropriate job for me. I also had a lot of family coming in late December so I wasn't very motivated to start a job in the middle of the holiday season. During late December and early January I started to do day-trading but I decided to treat this as a full time job, and have a strict discipline for it.

Using discipline and treating it as a full time job meant making sure I was doing my research, examining carefully my positions and stock momentum, accepting losses and not being too greedy. It worked surprisingly well with about $10k in overall gains in the first few weeks. There were some losses, and some scary moments, but overall I was making a good daily average, and having fun while doing it.

Unfortunately, in the middle of January things turned sour. I kept on a good clip, but I had 3 really bad days and when you added it all together I was only up about $1500 for all of January - not enough to justify doing this full time.

February started in a positive note - I made $3500 in the first week, but only after I changed the strategy a bit to avoid some big losses. Rather than sell at the end of the day, I held on to the stock for some time while it recovered, and bought more if the stock had a good upwards trend.

Well, that strategy came crashing down on me last week - I had too much exposure to 2 stocks (ENER and GLW) the day that Geithner came out with his "plan" (more like an outline) of hot to save the banking system. That day all stocks went down considerably (over 6%) in too short a time (less than 1 hour). Taking my stocks with them

One part that I *still* haven't figured of my strategy is WHEN to cut my losses - and WHEN to move from buying to shorting stocks.

I decided to continue my "swing trading" instead of day trading strategy, figuring the market had overreacted and would recover shortly. It looked like I had made the right choice since both stocks had recuperated most of what they had lost by Friday. I believed that by Tuesday (Monday was a holiday) I would be able to sell them either for a small loss or for potentially a small profit.

And then on Tuesday we had a repeat performance. Obama signs the stimulus legislation and all hell breaks lose. Rather than have a reassuring effect on the markets *EVERYTHING* tanked. My stocks dropped over 9% and 7% EACH, most of it in the first 30 minutes.

What's the lesson here? I don't know, and that's probably why I'm in this mess in the first place. The important thing is I need to find out - and quickly. I can't continue this job if I don't start making enough money to replace my regualr income. That used to be about $7.6k/month (when you add benefits), so we'll see what I can do. I still believe I can make my goal of around $11k/month, but I right now am WAY under that figure.

I have to figure out what, on average, would be better. Should I have sold that first Tuesday and taken the (big) loss? Should I have waited, but sold on Friday? Should I hold on? If so for how much longer? based ont he trends for these stocks, and the news around them at least one of them (ENER) will probably be higher - potentially MUCH higher - in the long term - but when is that?

I need to study this further and determine what type of loss I should accept and start placing stop-limit orders on these trades. Hmmm.... I guess this is part of what my new full time job requires if I want to master this.

Back...

Hi all, I am back. Today will be a very short post, but I hope to get back to the swing of things and start writing again.

A funny thing happened on the way to creating a new post... I re-read my last few posts and found that they were interesting... OK... interesting to me, but since I am the sole audience of this blog, I guess that is a success to be proud of. :-P

I don't know. Deep inside I hope this will be read by someone else sometime and find that it is interesting too. Maybe my children will read this when they are older and find something about their old man that they didn't know.

Hmmm.... Maybe that's what I should try to do... Put more about my life for future reference.

I read once a blog from David Pogue about *why* people film. I don't do it anymore, but I bought a Digital-8 camcorder when my son was going to be born and taped a lot of his first few years. I stopped when the camcorder stopped working and I realized that:

I hadn't looked at the old tapes since... Well... Probably never for some of them

The camcorder died and with it my capability to watch digital 8 tapes... GRRRRR!!!!

Sony stopped selling digital 8 cameras, giving up to the power of Mini-DV (mini-dv is currently dying - being replaced by directly taping to hard disk/flash drives or mini DVDs)

I was so angry that I had my memories locked in in a format that had a lifespan shorter than Betamax, that I refused to buy another digital camera for a long time. I currently take small movies with my digital camera, and am considering a "flip" camera.

But I digress. The blog asked the question "Why we shoot home videos?" and the answers were in part similar to what I hope will happen with this blog - and the discouraging part was this:

“What makes you think you’ll have any grandchildren with the time and inclination to sit through more than a few minutes of your home videos?

Yeah. That's probably what will happen with this as well.

Oh well. At least I will have fun reading these posts a few months in the future and remember what I was thinking earlier.
