Jennifer Hudson - by FAR the most amazing display of talent singing the american anthem at the Superbowl EVER.  For me anyway.  At first I said she ranked up there with Whitney, but the goosebumps lingered around long after and that was my reason for changing my statement. I think her deep breath at the beginning said it all. Recorded or not, it was phenomenal. Erykah Badu &amp;amp; Jay Electronica: this is old news by now, but worth a mention anyhow.  The talented duo welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world today (being Sunday).  And both Erykah and Jay tweeted.  Jay took up from where Erykah left off and tweeted the rest of the event live and direct. If you are not on Twitter as yet, you are obviously missing out.  Congrats to the proud parents and family! Thank you for the love: And what a nice surprise to find myself on their blogroll. :)  Married duo Danyel Smith - Vibe Magazine's Editor-in-Chief and Elliott Wilson - ex XXL Editor-in-Chief, founder of everything Ego Trip and soon to come Rap Radar, have come together to produce Take It Personal - a podcast that is well worth a listen.  You get a taste of everything from Danyel's song of the week and Pink Bull (yes Danyel, I went there) and Elliott's infectious troublesome laugh and tidbits on EVERYTHING. Whether it be hip hop old and new, their arguments, The President's movements or Danyel's cooking - nothing is safe.  Take a listen, you won't be sorry.  I guarantee you will be on your ass laughing by the end of the show.  They are out of control. On that note, here is Monday Madness: the news last week that made me cuss, cringe and shake my head. 1) No words: I was speechless when I read this and I think that tragic is an understatement.  I have no idea what that sense of loss of self feels like.  I still do not think that he was the one to play God and know what was best for his family by killing them and himself after he and his wife both lost their jobs.  It is crushing, but enough to kill your entire family thinking that it would be the answer?  This economic struggle is hitting everyone hard and if everyone's solution is to wallow in despair and do the cowardly thing and commit suicide taking their family with them - think again, because it is not the answer.  Seek help.  The healing process is on the way, as there are people now in The White House who are looking for a better way for you, than suicide. Just devastating. Read the whole story here. (aol.com) 2) Bong Anyone?: So Michael Phelps is in trouble for getting too sucky-faced with a bong.  To my surprise, I learned today that he was arrested for a DUI in 2004 and was put on probation for his act of stupidity.  Well what do you know, here is act of stupidity number 2.  Can he actually blame the act on being young?  Will we let him get a pass for that one?  My answer - NO. There are many kids out there his age, without 8 gold medals, endorsements and world records that have more sense than him.  I wonder if this would actually make a dent in his media persona.  Don't even get me started on why we know he won't be investigated for his stupidness, looked into his olympic time and stripped of medals and such.  Here is the pic that got him in trouble that he is apologizing profusely for: (newsoftheworld.co.uk) 3) Little Miss What??: There is a show debuting next week that has already found its way under my skin.  Little Miss Perfect on WE TV is not going to be on my must see TV list.   It is a show about little girls on their pageantry path.  I would think that we have already seen enough after the Jon Benet Ramsey case.  I shudder at the fact that mother's put their kids through the heavy make-up, the ball gowns, the vaseline on the teeth and th</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>soul,afrodisiac,music,arts,reviews,restaurants,plays,exhibits,museums,politics,news,fashion,design,beauty,food</itunes:keywords><description>"Can I get an encore, do you want more?..."  Encore - Jay-Z

Today's Old School Friday Theme is: originals vs remakes.  Very touchy topic I would think.  A lot of music lovers can definitely get into a throw down mode with this one.  We can all agree that some songs just shouldn't be touched at all - can anyone say "My Prerogative" by Britney Spears?  Yet on the other hand, there are some artists who do take the ride and refrain from the train wreck it could become. I will be pulling a few 90's inspirations, so bear with me.  Here are three of my favorites (another hard choice!): This happens to be one of my all time FAVORITE duets ever.  Everyone has a love for one of, if not both of these artists.  They were/are talented in so many ways and when they came together, they blew us all away.  Then when I heard this remake, I fell in love immediately.  This brother and sister team did a phenomenal job of capturing the smooth laid back energy and the yearning pain that can be heard in the lyrics of the song.  I was always a fan of Jesse Powell but not really of his sister Trina ("I Don't Know What You Came Here For" or "My Love Is The..." fame), but after this duet she won me over.   Second choice, one of the best funk bands ever put the sexy in funkay with this song **fanning profusely**: And before Mr. Sisqo went all "I am the king of R&amp;amp;B" nutso on us, Dru Hill really brought that heat over and over and OVER again on their debut album, which included an amazing remake of this song.  Now unfortunately there is no video for this song, but I did find a link for it on Rhapsody. Just click here and take a listen to #12. And lastly, something a bit more recent.  I am a huge Level 42 fan and this song always haunts me.  The lyrics are superb, I even wrote the lyrics as a post a while back.  This is my favorite track from them:  This phenomenal song was given a soulful touch, by the Grammy Nominated, raspy voiced Acey Ducey himself - Anthony David.  LOVE IT. I promise, that's all I have. Be sure to check out the rest of my OSF fam here.  Have a great weekend! (my favorite pic I took that night - Monica Blaire) First up to bat was Mr. Kameron Korvet and when he takes to the stage with his guitar in hand, you cannot help but sit up and be attentive to his movements and vibe.  It was an acoustic set and y'all already know I am a sucker for a good set.  Knowing that Kameron is spectacular in that form, I knew we were all in for a treat.   The lights went low, he tuned up his instrument of choice and breezed through his tracks one after the other (in no order) - one of my favorites "Kiss and Makeup," "War Within," and he ended his set with a request for "Situation."  He's a one man show.  He conversed with the crowd and kept it moving the Corvet way.  I was in my glee, because he did my FAVORITE track from his album Saying Things, the sexy and sensual "Let's Go Again": Time spent with Kameron on stage is never enough. Followed by his mellow aura, Joe's was certainly turned up a notch or two...or five.  Monica Blaire was NOT A JOKE and seeing that this was her debut in NYC, she was relentless with her shit.  And Tamara Wellons (another diva you will hear about soon on these pages) let me know via Twitter that when Monica performed at Artmosphere Cafe in Maryland a couple of weeks ago, they were not ready for her.  Well New York was certainly hit with a storm of epic proportions that night!  Upon her entrance to the stage, Monica unleashed and hit the crowd with a few sexy body grooves, slinking herself across the stage and swaying to and fro with her own signature Anita Baker-esque movements.  And that voice?  It filled the pub from back to front 10 times over.  Her upbeat and funky track "Music" surely had everyone with a pulse bouncing: Monica bopped and weaved through her set, with the packed house following her flow.  From the break down of "One and Only," the scorching "Set Me Free," and the Sunday church event of "Call," to my personal instant favorite "Special," the woman was on FYAH.  The feeling that everyone tried to convey at the end of the show was inexplicable.  All we could do was say her name and shake our heads in disbelief.  You best believe that I will say if Miss Monica Blaire is performing anywhere near your vicinity, do yourself a favor - do NOT miss that show.  I will only tell you once!! Last on the bill was Postman doing his thing.  I am honestly not familiar with his music, but he did have an interesting flow of reggae/rock inspired hip hop.  Personally, it felt a bit out of place with what I was feeling and I felt my vibe come down a few notches.  He is good at what he does, has a tight flow and his lyrics are most definitely positive.  However there was not that much interaction with the crowd and it seemed that soundcheck was still taking place during the performance.  That did not do it for me.  Perhaps it was an off night for him, I have no idea.  But he performed a few tracks and called it a night.   I have to add, Maya Azucena is energetic as all hell and can rock a mic without even singing a note!  She hosted with flair and kept the energy moving along the entire night.  Her last note of the night had everyone in step, as she broke out into a spontaneous rendition of "I Want To Thank You" by Alicia Meyers.  Give thanks indeed, it was a tremendous night of music. See y'all soon... Goodbye - Usher I have had a pretty exciting weekend that has brought me to a whole other level of weariness.  I guess I haven't been out like that in a long while, but it is starting to catch up to me in the worst way.  Two days entering my house at 6 am CANNOT become a habit.  Thank god it isn't - and it WILL NOT.  Hey, even my boy Taz gets sluggish, so I am well within my parameters when I say - today will be a short entry. There are going to be some more changes coming your way on my blog, so please bear with me.  There will be posts, but some may be shorter than usual.  For today, since I did not have the time to do my readings and share my rants, I am going to share the video laugh of the day.  This one didn't make me laugh, it actually made me smile from the inside out.  I wish every Monday a Fame moment would break out in a crowded place.  It would make the dreadful spell of Monday run off into oblivion. And of course the flashback of the day:  This is one of the jams that my bro and I have a sick love affair with.  He used to play it for me all the time when he was a DJ. Look out for a review of the phenomenal Sound In Color show featuring Kameron Corvet, Monica Blaire and Postman during the week. See y'all soon... Tonight - Mint Condition On Sunday night, I took to B.B. King's Blues Club with my girls Detrel and Pam, to see my favorite band in the world - Mint Condition.  I was literally counting down the days for this show, since I missed their previous one for my birthday last May.  I was not missing them this time around.  Unbeknownst to a lot of people, Mint Condition is one of the hardest working bands in the game today.  We all know in the land of sampling, autotune and vocoders, there is hardly any room for an R&amp;amp;B band.  Remember when you were able to name at least 5 bands off the top of your head? Earth Wind &amp;amp; Fire, Kool &amp;amp; The Gang, SOS Band, Tony Toni Tone and The Roots Band.  I threw that one in just to throw you off.  But now...not so easy. Anyhow, on Sunday night I did not do my usual journalistic thing - take out my book and jot down notes.  Analyze and strip down the show in my head.  Instead, I took in the show as a fan should.  I swayed and cooed to each song, I brought myself down memory lane with each note sung and I marveled at the musicianship that everyone brought forth on that stage. The opening set was a soulful rocked out throw down by a band from Minnesota who call themselves The New Congress.  They began their set with their DJ and a little bit of scratchin' and mixin'.  Once the rest of the band took to the stage, everyone was set to get down and see what the band had to offer.  They sang a President Obama speech sampled track "Under The Eyes" and a sultry track entitled "Eyes", however I would say the crowd fell into New Congress' hands when they did their covers of "Used To Love U" by John Legend and Musiq's "Just Friends."  They had the whole club singing and dancing along with the latter.  Here is a quick snippet of their rocked out reprise: They most definitely had me intrigued enough to purchase the album and have it signed at the end of the show.  Review will be coming soon. It wasn't enough that I was here to see Mint Condition, but The Sugar Hill Gang made it through to introduce the band.  How funky is that?  Upon their introduction, Stokley, Jeff, O'Dell, Ricky and Larry took it upon themselves to give B.B. King's a sweat n' funky hell of a good time.  Dodging in and out of their hits one after another, it was like a Mint Condition fan's dream come true.  Opening with "Gratitude," and following with (in no order) "Whoaa," "Is This Pain Or Pleasure," "You Send Me Swinging," and "It's Hard", they were all on the roster and I'm just getting started.  Their percussion pause mid way through the show with Stokely on drums, is a reminder to all that Mint Condition is your quintessential band.  They can play their designated instruments, yet a few can double up on other instruments as well.  For instance, we all know that Stokely can find any form of rhythm and sound in ANYTHING (he's like a musical Macgyver) and Jeff is the keyboardist for the group, who also doubles up as the saxophonist as well.  And the man is a badass tickling the ivories and blowing that sax. More tracks were thrown at us, "Baby Boy Baby Girl," "Breakin' My Heart-Pretty Brown Eyes," "So Fine" and "What Kind of Man Would I Be."  And I know I am missing a few, but honestly it was a whirlwind of Mint's best, no one's favorite was left out in the cold.  And just when we thought the night was done, after their encore, they brought out The Sugar Hill Gang for a "thank you" and we were treated to this: At that point, the club was shut down with everyone responding HO! and screaming on cue.  The night could not have ended on a better note.  Of course my Mint Condition dream concert, would be for them to bring "Straight From The Mint Factory" back to life - word for word, song for song.  But hey, a gal can dream. :) To check out Mint Condition's tour schedule visit their website here.  See y'all soon... King's last night.  New Congress opened and The Sugar Hill Gang made an appearance and brought the place DOWN.  I don't want to give away anymore, look for the review during the week. Today is everyone's favorite part of the week - Monday Madness.  There are a lot of video's to get through today.  I figured that since this week is inauguration week and MLK, I will not dwell on the stupidity and somber thoughts that the news always has to offer.  Here are a few tidbits that crossed my path during the week that I will share my two cents on. Without further adieu, here is a twist on Monday Madness: one made me cuss, cringe and shake my head.  While the others made me double over because of the induced side splitting laughter. 1) Let's start with the slackness shall we?: Alright.  This one made me SO UNBELIEVABLY irate, I wanted to take out my belt and give out some licks.  When did having your young child show their cussing aptitude while you as an imbecile of a parent, friend or family member - hold the camera?  I do not understand the sense in this video at all.  And then people wonder why these kids have no manners or respect for their elders.  Well, it is because of parents, friends or family members like this who think this is a joke.  We sure can do better. Disgusting. The rest are JOKES! 2) Food monster anyone?: Have you seen the commercials (there are two) for the new Weight Watchers Momentum program?  Now, those who know me are aware that I have an obsession with the color orange.  When I saw this little monster, I was in stitches!  It is so cute!  Laugh with me. 3) MIRACLE: There are absolutely no words for this dude.  None.  I know it's a holiday one, but I just can't get enough of it...LOL 4) WARNING - MAY BE OFFENSIVE TO SOME VIEWERS (but it is damn hilarious!): Thank you Adri for this one.  I was left speechless and you all know that is rare.  Did this commercial for Durex condoms take it too far or is it all in good fun?  I was DYING of laughter!  See for yourself. Flashback of the day:  All day today, I felt like breaking out and dancing.  Why?  Have no idea.  Here is one of the songs on my soundtrack for the day. See y'all soon... Alright, I have 3 for your listening pleasure.  First up has to be my favorite of all time.  Apparently according to my Dad, when I was a lil' one and the theme to this show came on, it did not matter where I was in the house - I would run in front of the TV and start shaking my money maker.  I guess I was a beach girl at heart, go ahead and laugh it up. Second has to be my favorite cul-de-sac in the world.  Maybe it was the cheesy sax, who knows.  This theme went on for days! And lastly, I LOVED this because it personified every single person's style and taste on the show.  And I don't think it was a reflection of just their characters, I believe it to be a reflection of themselves.  Out of all the seasons, I love this one the most.  And they had some pretty creative ones. Please visit the rest of my OSF Family here. Have a phenomenal and safe MLK weekend and we all know what next Tuesday is.  DC stay strong!   It is a day that Martin would have been proud to have celebrated with Mr. Obama if he were here today.  What a birthday gift! However, you guys also know that I am surely not one for tooting my horn AT ALL. A few of my peoples have been on me regarding what I do, what I have done and why it is not mentioned on the daily here. Well this year, I am starting a few new things on this blog and on the personal tip. The personal part will come soon, I promise to share that with you in the future. For now, one of the new attributes to the blog is "Ear To The Ground," which will be a weekly post of an artist(s) that has caught my ear, someone that I think you should have a listen to and judge for yourself if they are worthy of your aural stimulation soundtrack. In one of my discussions, I am about to toot my own horn - a bit. UGH. Years ago during my life in Montreal, I was blessed to have a great circle of friends whom I still call close friends today. I worked at HMV and was able to forge very long lasting friendships. During my incredible run there, I learned a lot about music on the whole (and I already thought I knew shit - HA!) because I worked with like minded people. People who were sick without their music, understood what it took to create and love music to the fullest extent, knew their producers, writers and such without even blinking. We were the team that you would DIE for in a music store today. Anyhow, I was lucky enough to meet and become friends with a talented and emerging group called O.N.E. The group consisted of Pierre Gage (who I will have a write up on soon), Martin Gardy and Corneille Nyungura.   My girls and I used to dwell in the front at most of their shows, cheering them on and supporting them. They took control of the stage and sang their asses off, much to the delight of their female fans. We all used to hang, they would pass through the store to say what's up.  Ahh the good ol' times. I left HMV and also left Montreal to find out that my boys unfortunately went their separate ways and Corneille was the first out of the three, who went on to start a solo career. Corneille released his first french album "Parce qu'on vient de loin" ("Because we come from far" for my english peeps) in 2002, that was pretty much quiet. However, the re-release in 2003 with the double disk choc full of bonuses was felt and heard around Quebec, Paris and Bordeaux to name a few, catapulting the album to date - to sell more than a million copies. Corneille has been signed to Motown and his english album "The Birth of Cornelius" has been released in Canada, Japan and the U.S. For those of you who have not taken a listen to what he has to offer, you are missing out. I think you would love it. It is full of charisma, infectious soul and smooth vibes. Check it out for yourself and see what you think.  Here is a song that I love and it was also his first single, "Too Much of Everything."  And it's his wife in the video that he's whispering sweet nothings to dear ladies.  No tears. . For more info on Corneille, check out his label page here. And a quick mention.  I have no idea if any of you have heard of this artist, but I decided to give him a listen - I am still processing, but I thought I would share him with you nonetheless.  I received a press release the other day for Mishka.  He is a Bermudian/Canadian dude who evokes the spirits to bring you some roots, rock reggae.  And I must add, the man is signed to Matthew McConaughey's label j.k. livin' Records.  Yes, you read right - Matthew McConaughey.  I am not sure what I think of Mishka as yet, as I said, I am still trying to process his music.  I leave it up to you, please let me know what you think.   Flashback of the day:  Today I am fighting with the remnants of a migraine, so I needed something bubbly and fun. See y'all soon... I HAD to go with the King of Pop on the first selection.  It has graced these pages already, but it is one of my favorite tracks and it was accompanied by a phenomenal video: I am not the biggest Mariah Carey fan, but you cannot contest the fact that she can saaaang and does have some great tracks in her discography.  She tackled this cover and claimed it. The Queen of Hip Hop Soul released the classic "What's The 411," need I say anymore? And my last one, I had to hip hop it up a bit - one, two, three and to the four... I feel like I am deserting the rest of my babies!!  Hope you enjoyed! Please check out the rest of the OSF participants here. See y'all soon... I have a lot to bring to you, but I am kind of stagnant for now since I have not yet attended any shows for the New Year.  I was supposed to hit the inaugural business in DC, but my plans have been wiped clean.  Instead of sulking, I am filling my calendar with a slew of upcoming shows.  Right now, it looks as though Mint Condition will be my first musical step into the New Year.  I also have Kameron Corvet and Monica Blaire coming up at the end of the month and a lot more to come.  Have no fear, my rounds will soon commence.  Today is a special day, it's my Daddy's birthday.  As you all know, I lost my Dad to cancer not too long ago.  I miss him immensely.  So as I sit here listening to one of his favorite singers - Mr. Donny Hathaway, I am reminded of my Dad's memory.  A boisterous, fun and serious, educated black man, who was adamant about an education and seeing his kids succeed.  He wasn't an easy dude, but he did want his kids to realize their full potential.  I know he would be proud to hear that I did actually chase my dream and attend NYU and his girl is doing the damn thing and trying to do what I can for the given time that I am here. :)  Love and miss ya Daddy. My debonair daddy with his big sis. Flashback of the day:  I had to go with his woman Aretha, no doubt. See y'all soon... Ok, so I am a bit late - I do apologize.  I am presently recuperating from a phenomenal New Years week spent with my little sister.  We always have a good time when we are together, holiday or not.  Full of laughter, love and plenty of entertainment to say the least.  I hope that everyone enjoyed their New Year and brought it in safely.  Never too late to send optimistic and positive vibes out to my peeps. So let's get the show on the road, shall we? Here's Monday Madness - the news that made me cuss, cringe and shake my head: 1) Soulja Boy: I am not going to spend too much time on this ingrate.  I could name call this child from here to kingdom come, however it will not solve anything and after all, I am an adult.  It is kind of sad really, but surely not an excuse.  Where are this child's parents?  And I do say child, because even though you are 18 - guess what?  You are still a child.  Have you seen the obnoxious amount of jewelry this kid has on his person?  Is that where all his new found fame is going to?  His actions have spoken volumes in the past few months.  From the slavery comment, to Nas killing hip hop (his nonsensical rant is below) and now this whole attention seeking issue of being "robbed.".  And y'all wonder why he is slipping on the Billboard charts.  Grammy nominated?  It doesn't seem to be an elitist thing anymore and that's a damn shame for those who are deserving. 2) Watching over us: Only the big man upstairs knows what he is up to when he decides to take the angels on earth.  My heart goes out to the Travolta Family for loosing their young son, to Eartha Kitt's Family for losing their loved one and a purrrfect icon, to Freddie Hubbard's family for loosing a loved one and an amazing jazz man and for Dr Dre's family turmoil regarding the results of their son's autopsy.  How much more can we emphasize the drastic repercussions of taking drugs? 3) INTERVENTION: I am sick and tired of hearing women degrade themselves with grand delusions of bullshitery.  Case in question - video ass/wannabe rapper Angel Lola Love and female rapper Jacki - O both put a price on their entrance and exit holes - to put it mildly.  I think telling the world that you would give sexual favors to receive material objects really says a lot about your character.  I sure hope you are not expected to be taken seriously when you are trying to break into a male dominated arena, that is lacking exceptional female talent right now.  How about actually portraying a female artist with some game and intelligence?  What a twist!!  Well paint me green and call me Kermit if that actually happened.  With women like them on the scene, the saying "Never judge a book by its cover" is hard to swallow.  No pun intended.  How convenient that this comes about now when Jacki - O's album is set to be released next month and Angel Lola Love is trying to become a female rapper?  I am spent. 4) Control your consumption people!: I will not say this again.  You drink and drive or drink too much, you deal with the consequences.  Looks good on you Charles Barkley.  Oh and you can forget about that "oral examination" you were late for as well.  Jackass.  Like we don't have our hands full already with Plaxico.  And of course, there had to be another one under the influence from the sports world to join Charles' illustrious club - Andre Rison was arrested for public disturbance as well.  Looks like there needs to be more than one intervention session planned. 5) So to continue with my Monday funny, here's a good Santa chuckle for you. I know it's over, but it is the last Christmas "anything" you will see from me...lol  This had me in stitches, just PRECIOUS! Flashback of the day:  I feel like breakdancing and this soundtrack I have on vinyl.  I need to break out my Fila's and ting. :) See y'all soon... A Night To Remember - Shalamar I am actually looking forward to tomorrow night.  Another year has passed and I have no idea where it went to.  This year brought about phenomenal new friendships, amazing personal revelations and a blueprint for what I have yet to achieve come 2009.  I have so many dreams on the horizon and my list grows every time I cross out a completed goal.  I allow no one or anything to stand in my way, I am too ambitious for that.  I have also decided to do some end of year cleansing and cut off or let go some of the vampires that I have in my life.  It's all for the better, new beginnings and such for 2009.  Just living my life. So with that cleanse in mind, I was going through some of my concert clips on Ivory and realized there are quite a few that I have not shared with you.  Instead of bringing you my top tens of 2008, I have decided to give you a taste of a few artists that you will be sure to read more about here in 2009 and a few snippets from concerts I thoroughly enjoyed this year. 1) Eric Benet at B.B. Kings killing his next single, "Chocolate Legs." 2) Lorenda Robinson from Brown Baby Girl broke down "What You Won't Do For Love" @ Billie's Black:  3) At the Brown Baby Girl show, Kimberly Nichole made "Love Without A Limit" her own. 4) The beautiful Mika sang one of her new songs from her forthcoming album to be released next summer, entitled "Summer Love" @ Billie's Black: 5) Here is Grammy Nominated Wayna singing her nominated track "Loving You (Music) @ Billie's Black (sorry it's a bit dark): 6) And lastly, I saw the marvelous diva herself Chaka Khan.  I was grinning from ear to ear.  This was the ONLY snippet I was able to get because of her stage po-po at the front. These are a handful of snippets from the slew of shows I was lucky enough to see this year. Earth, Wind &amp;amp; Fire, MAXWELL, GEORGE MICHAEL, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Billy Joel, The Police, PJ Morton, Big Daddy Kane, Wayna, Mika, Eric Benet, Monica, Dru Hill (yes, them), Mint Condition and the list goes on - it has been a very musical year.  Next year is only a day away. On that note, I would like to wish everyone a safe and prosperous New Year.  May the New Year bring to you, everything positive that you put out in the universe to receive.   See y'all soon... Bring The Pain - Method Man Pain is an understatement from where I am sitting.  The excruciating physical pain of traveling for hours on a bus, definitely does give a whole new meaning to love.  The things I do for my family.  I say that, only because to them - me deciding to fly rather than take the bus to and from Montreal and New York, shows my shi shi pooh pooh tendencies.  DO.NOT.CARE.  The bus, particularly Greyhound, is full of drama, void of any communication skills and just plain old unreliable.  After enduring about 14 hours of torture, I am most definitely ecstatic that I made it here to Montreal in one piece.  So on that note, you know that I have absolutely no energy to bang out a Monday Madness installment today.  Sorry. During my pause, I think you all should check out a few of my favorite spots who are compiling their Best of 2008 lists.  Check out my girl Vivrant Thang as she goes through some of her favorite performances, albums and something else I am sure she will have up by tomorrow.  Then there's my boy QH who listed his Top Records of 2008.  And DJ Stylus has also compiled his 2008 Hot List, which is a must see.  Please don't be shy to show some love to my blogroll.  Only the best of the best in my world make it there.   And of course, I am willing to share a few tidbits that balance my week musically: Monday: My girl DJ Diva always has a funky mix to get your week started.  Check her out here. Wednesday: EJ Flavors certainly knows how to take you back to the old school.  Check him out here. Friday: A new find for me, Fave and his Friday Favecasts have been the way to close out my week. Check it out here. And that's all I have for today. Flashback of the day:  Easy going, laid back...just grooving. See y'all soon... To be honest, Christmas has not been the same for me for quite some time now.  It isn't that jolly holiday that I used to look forward to.  However, I do give thanks for being able bodied to visit my family and share in love, food and company.  What more could I say or want? I have been steering clear of playing parang (West Indian Christmas Carols for those who do not know) or Christmas Carols on the whole.  My cousins even went so far as to call me Scrooge...lol  But everyone understands it's a tough time of year for me, so I deal and we move on. Contrary to my mood and ranting, I do have a couple of favorite Christmas Carols to share.  I love this movie and just watched it the other day for the umpteenth time. Will Ferrel is PRECIOUS and always manages to make me smile.   And my other song: I heart this album and play it every single year without fail.   Check out the other fabulous OSF participants here.  Have a great weekend... The ladies behind ONUTSS - Detrel &amp;amp; Pam The bill had quite a few stellar acts performing - Serena, Tom Paul, Robin Small, Keith Fluitt and Abby Dobson and they each brought down the house with their own style of seductive or interpretive soul.  Each artist took to the stage and showcased two of their tracks for the patrons to enjoy.  I will go through one from each.  Serena started off the show with "Nobody Has To Know," a stellar mellow track that had everyone in the groove right from the start.  Robin Small followed with her powerful gospel tinged voice, taking us all to chuch.  She surely delivered the message with "I Surrender" and I know that it did not fall on deal ears.  Tom Paul debuted "A Different World" and had harmonies floating from patrons in every corner of the room.  Abby Dobson represented with her unique, yearning and powerful voice on "Born 2 Love U" leaving everyone craving for more.  Angela Johnson, Monet, Mike Hammond,  Starbrite and Mika were all present (forgive me if I forgot anyone!) and so was Vivian Sessoms, who took the stage.  She blessed us with a passionate cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy."  The versions I have heard lately from both Kimberly Nichole and Vivian, have been ON POINT.  No need to say anymore on that.  However, it was the finale that was worthy of an encore or two.  Keith Fluitt took to the stage along with most of the amazing talent in the house: Myoshi, Ra-Re Valverde, Andricka Hall and the artists on the bill - for a rousing rendition of "This Christmas."  It was a beautiful night that ended on a high note indeed.  Everything just flowed...great company, good vibes and lots of love all around.  For those who were trying to disturb the groove - God does not like ugly.  They know who they are.  That is the reason why the night went on without a hitch.  Not to mention, I must say that I have been blessed to become friends with a lot of these artists.  I give thanks for these wonderful friendships and look forward to what 2009 brings forth for all of them.  I send out nothing but love and positive vibes. Flashback of the day: I thought it would only be right to go a bit further back into time with this one. See y'all soon... On that note, let's just jump into it shall we?  Here is Monday Madness, the news that made me cuss, cringe and shake my head. 1) What could I possibly say?: I really miss "Rock With You" and "Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough" Michael.  Apparently he was out and about shopping in this get up.  You would think we would be used to it by now, but...UGH.   2) The last thing I have to say about the matter: I am extremely happy that Jennifer Hudson's family can somewhat rest easy, knowing that the person behind the heinous acts of violence on their family is in custody.  Obviously it is not comforting to know that the person in question is someone they once considered to be family.  What really irks me, is the reasoning behind the murders.  William Balfour had the audacity to say that he murdered the family members because he thought a gift that was sent to Julia was from another man.  I remain speechless... 3) Why?: I have always liked Jennifer Anniston, but why the naked GQ Magazine bit?  Perhaps I am behind on my news bits, but does she have a movie coming out (oh wait, she does!  Something about a misbehaved dog?), is she trying to prove something?  This is not her usual ammo. Or is she trying to remind Brad what he left behind?  Especially since she is still answering questions about the whole marriage thing.  I think it's time to just tell everyone to shove the question where the sun doesn't shine.  Her answering them, personally, looks to me that she is still hurt by the situation - but sweets obviously Brad has moved on.  It's time you do the same.  Or better yet, keep your comments out of the magazines, that's a bit petty n'est pas?  Here's her pic for those of you who have not seen it.  4) Times are HARD!: Things are not easy in the U.S. economy and everyone is feeling the pinch.  Even celebrities.  I am sure you have heard about the list of people who have been loosing property over the past few weeks.  From NeNe Leakes from The Real Housewives of Atlanta business (although she is saying she "left"), to Fantasia, Aretha Franklin (an attorney's mistake, really?)and now T-Boz.  Like a bullet, the recession obviously does not discriminate.   5) And the winner for the Monday video laugh (thanks to Afrobella): Oh this is PRECIOUS.  And my West Indian massive will laugh their asses off.  The rest of you can read the print in the boxes...LOL Flashback of the day: In listening to my favorite podcast on Wednesday's (EJ, it's all about EJ y'all!), I heard a Soul II Soul song and it reminded me of how fond I was of Caron Wheeler.   See y'all soon... Well, now is the time for me to bang out a short and sweet OSF.  This week's theme is - favorite band.  In this day and age, it seems like the idea of a band in soul music is next to nil.  With the exception of a few, I do feel like the Snufalupagus syndrome (around, yet thought to be extinct) bows it's ugly head when it comes to this topic. Anyhow without further adieu, I will share three of them with you. One - I just had a flashback moment the other day with these cats.  Kool and the Gang were THE ultimate band for me when I was younger.  It's the brass, it gets me every time.  They were just so...Kool.  And please do not even get me started about James "J.T." Fine-ass Taylor. Next up, without a doubt one of my Dad's favorite bands, which of course became one of mine.  I absolutely love, love, LOVE this track and they were known as The Stax Records Band.  It does not get any better than that. And lastly, my favorite band from the day they released "Pretty Brown Eyes."  Stokley put it on ME.  And I have been a serious, die hard fan ever since.  I have crossed borders to see this band perform and the musicianship and love for the art and craft of music is exactly what this group personifies.  So many favorites, I have no idea which to choose... Please check out my fellow OSF peeps here.  Have a good weekend y'all... PJ made the venue his home - just him, his keyboard, his percussionist and bass player.  So heavy, yet so light.  They meshed seamlessly, because obviously you don't always need a huge 10 piece band to be the filler.  Sometimes, less is more.  And in this case, it was exactly what everyone needed. Starting his set with the feel-good, sing-song track "Blah Blah Blah," (Jiborish) he was already in everyone's good graces.  The whole restaurant was singing along from the first word, and literally took over the song during the chorus.  Track after track, the Grammy Award winning writer had everyone geared up for the night ahead.  With the rhapsodic "Superstar," the floaty "Fly Away," the unforgiving "How We Were" and the jazz fused "No Ordinary Love,' it was an evening worthy of a fireplace, a glass of wine and a room full of good friends.  And that was the exact vibe emanating from Billie's Black that night.  Midway through the show, we where treated to a phenomenal rendition of  Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" by Kimberly Nichole.  Kimberly took control of the mic and by the end of the first verse, she made the song her own.  Delivered through her power and testament to the song, I seriously thought I was in chuch.  And of course after an evening of sing-a-longs and break downs (PJ stopped in the middle of "Today" to break it down so it could forever and consistently be broken), he ended the set with a seasonal Christmas Carol - "The Christmas Song."  Sorry it's a bit dark, as the restaurant's lighting was dimmed.  Thanks to my girl Detrel from ONUTSS for the borrow: That was my first foray into the world of PJ Morton and I will say, it is a trip I do intend to take again.  I love his music, but never saw him live until now.  I do hope to catch him in full concert again sometime soon.  Perhaps during the release of his new album in 2009.  Right now, you can enjoy the sounds of PJ Morton Live From LA and find more info about the talented singer on his official website here and his MySpace page here. Flashback of the day:  PJ put me in a mellowed out mood and seriously made me all warm inside.  Took me back to this song right here.  One of, or perhaps, Tha Connoisseur's favorite song EVER.  I can't explain the bliss and heart palpitations that I am overcome with when I hear this song: See y'all soon... During the week, for some odd reason, I have fallen upon some vids that had me falling off of my seat and breaking out into a laughing and coughing fit.  I figured since there wasn't that much on the news front that really tickled my fancy this week (why babble about the obvious stupidity of O.J. or Plaxico), why not share the vids so you can all get a good laugh?  It is Monday after all, so we can all do for a joke or two or three.. On that note, here is your installment of Monday Madness in video.  The news that made me cuss, cringe and shake my head (and reel and kick up!!). 1) Colbert vs Kanye: This is just too PRECIOUS.  One delightful day last week on Twitter, Kanye left a message asking "Who the fuck is Stephen Colbert?" - now of course someone went and did the research for all of us as to why Kanye was so incensed about Mr. Colbert.  Well, this was the reason.  Let me entertain you... .cc_box a:hover .cc_home{background:url('http://www.comedycentral.com/comedycentral/video/assets/syndicated-logo-over.png') !important;}.cc_links a{color:#b9b9b9;text-decoration:none;}.cc_show a{color:#707070;text-decoration:none;}.cc_title a{color:#868686;text-decoration:none;}.cc_links a:hover{color:#67bee2;text-decoration:underline;}The Colbert ReportMon - Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30cOperation Humble Kanye - Stephen Beats KanyeColbert at Christmas Colbert Christmas DVDGreen Screen Bill O'Reilly Interview 2) McDonalds really did it this time: My Canadian readers will understand when I say that sometimes we are just lucky that some programming does not reach our airwaves.  Let us take this McDonalds commercial for example.  It is the epitome of cheese and stank athletes foot.  And to make it worse, I am hearing that my boy Ne-Yo wrote it??  If that is the truth, he just lost some points in my book.  I detest this commercial that is being driven into my brain at least every other hour by some broadcasting network.  Not impressed, but it sure is corny - the dude is singing about McNuggets!  The commercial is called...wait for it...McNuggets Love. 3) The Ad Council: So much fun!!  My sister kept on talking about this commercial when she was up here and I never had the chance to see it, until recently.  I L-O-V-E it.  I think it really speaks for itself.  It is an ad focusing on the troubling statistic of families coping with the absence of a patriarchal presence.  It is not just in America, but it should resonate everywhere.  This add just puts a big ol' uncontrollable smile on my face.  I know it's only a commercial, but if only we had more like him... 4) Oh Mother of Satan I rebuke thee!!: I have no idea what to say about this one.  I know that everyone has to channel their creativity in which ever way they see fit.  Nonetheless, when I saw this video?  I was...speechless.   And I will tell you what I told my friend after I saw the video: "Prince is in a corner somewhere rocking back and forth."  And that is all I will say on this.  Here, take a look for yourself, at Supa Nova Slom.  I couldn't even watch the whole video...LOL (thanks Buttababy). 5) Star Wars is killah...if you didn't know...: We are obviously not the only one's that enjoy good music.  I was watching Return of the Jedi yet again the other night and I completely forgot about this scene!!  It brought me right back to my childhood, not to mention The Max Rebo Band was SERIOUS.  A touch of jazz and funk, okay not in english of course, but funkay nonetheless.  And with their own Alvin Ailey dancer in the background?  It can't get any better than that! And secondly, my actor turned singer goes to Tisha Campbell.  Yes, I went THERE.  I loved this woman.  We all know she was that chick in House Party and who can forget her as Gina.  But back in the day, when my girl dropped "Push" and "Love Me Down," Tisha gained a fan in me. Like her best friend Tichina Arnold, both can B-L-O-W.  Not to mention Tisha knew her way around a dance floor like it was nobody's business.  Friday Night Videos killed out both songs and I loved every minute of it.  I didn't know which one to post, so here are both "Push" and "Love Me Down."   Have a good weekend y'all... Anniversary - Tony! Toni! Tone! Alright, it's not really today, it was actually last Wednesday.  However, better late than never is what they say (who the hell are 'they' anyway?).  First let me take time out to say thank you to my girl Marvalus One, who has blessed me with another blog award and has a sister blushing, yet again.  I am honored and humbled to accept the Uber Amazing Blog Award.  I love to write and share thoughts and I am ecstatic that so many of you out there enjoy hearing my rants... :)  I thank you immensely (I promise I will spread the love on an upcoming entry). Anyhow, I figured it would be fun to go through the top 5 or 10 - depending on how I feel after 5 - of my favorite posts in my 100 strong pile.  Let us begin: 5) My "6 Questions With" Series: If it is one thing that I have learned over the years about interviewing, is that it is so much easier to talk with a person than at a person.  What I mean is, I always find that artists end up becoming extremely comfortable with you when they are relaxed and not bombarded with similar questions they have answered for the umpteenth time.  Two of my favorite interviews I have ever conducted were with Teedra Moses and Tamia.  So I decided to use that so called charm that I have and apply it to my blog.  It is only 6 questions, but I have fun doing it and it gives us a little insight into the artist.  Hopefully a few tidbits that you did not know before are shared as well.  I have not done many, but that will soon change as I am working on a few good ones to bring forth.  For now, check out 6 Questions With Taniq and the first entry in the series, with Sy Smith.   4) My Album of The Week: I have no idea what I would do or be without music.  Music is what fuels me and it continues to be my muse.  It has taken me to great heights and has bailed me out of great lows.  A lot of the music I feature under this title are favorites that I dig from the crates.  I have not written too many posts, but again, that will soon change as it has become a favorite of mine and a lot of you out there as well have made it clear that you would like to see more.  I aim to please!  A couple of my favorites include Maxwell's "Urban Hang Suite" (no kidding) and my boys Intro.  3) Concert Reviews: Who doesn't like to hear about a concert that they could not attend?  I love to write concert reviews, especially if the concert is off the chain.  I try to bring the concert to you - the vibe, the songs, the flow of the soiree.  I make an effort to bring it to you to the best of my ability.  I usually run home and with the last beat of the drum snare in my head, I come in at 3 am and bang out the review so it is fresh.  My favorite reviews thus far are of COURSE Maxwell's show (still fanning myself vigorously) and my boy George Michael's show.  2) Monday Madness: Now how could I pass Monday Madness?  It is so funny how this regular entry took off.  I think you all like to hear my rant and of course, I feed off of that!  The news is always filled with such negative reports - this one dead, this was blown up, this person was shot - sometimes all we need is a smile to bring things back into perspective.  They (there 'they' are again!) say that laughter is the best medicine!  And those who know me are quite aware that I love a good laugh.  I cannot and will not even think of choosing my favorite Monday Madness entry, however please feel free to dig in the crates and click on any entry.  I promise, you will not be disappointed! 1) Flashback of the Day: This is my FAVORITE part of my entry.  The part where I get to share a bit of my musical knowledge.  I mean, I do have to live up to my moniker after all.  I have mostly stuck with the genre of R&amp;amp;B, however I will be changing that as I go along.  I have always shared that I listen to a little bit of everything and I believe you have to in order to be a connoisseur and true lover of music.  I kn</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>soul,afrodisiac,music,arts,reviews,restaurants,plays,exhibits,museums,politics,news,fashion,design,beauty,food</itunes:keywords><description>"Do you know what today is?  It's [my] anniversary..."
