The Rebirth "This Journey in" Album Review

Soul music's jam band
Atlanta natives and a growing number of others will recognize the compliment and the comparison when I say that The Rebirth reminds me a great deal of Seek. Subtle, moving vocals over a very organic and musically adept band all combined with a hard to place, vaguely spacey feel. Noelle Scaggs has the kind of voice that you can listen to all night without being blown away and yet simultaneously have absolutely no desire to go anywhere else.

The Rebirth is essential summer mood music. Songs like "Stay Away" make you feel good in the same way that it's always harder to be down when the sun is shining. It's sunroof open and windows down music. It's dance in the living room with your sweetie music.

The band has a Sweetback-type funk to it. The grooves are solid and the instrumentation tight, but there's nothing that might threaten to take the spotlight off the collective output. There are no wild solos, nothing to draw attention to individual players. It's playing for the sake of the audience. Songs like "Shake It", "Got Your Madness", and "This Journey In" are demonstrations of The Rebirth's ability to create an atmosphere where their audiences can enjoy themselves. It's not necessarily about the audience singing along, it's about the experience.

The Pointers unfortunately minus June but with Ruths daughter Issy as replacement are still as taut and vocally efficient as ever. Their harmonies remain unsurpassed. From the first number Happiness to the encore of Wang Dang Doodle, the Pointers will have you dancing, and singing along. I really loved their live version of Neutron Dance and Chain of Fools,.

Strong Start
This is a good beginning to Michael Jackson's solo career. "I Wanna Be Where You Are" is my favorite, and after reading a concert review from the early 70s it was the audience's favorite then too. It's timeless.

His cover of "Ain't No Sunshine" is great, and as an intro he talks about missing his girl. It's very cute when you think how young he was. Then of course there's "Got to Be There" which is a good song. Overall it's one of my favorite cds.

A Must-Have for Old School Ballad Fans
This album has some of the best smooth jams from the early 90's. "Always and Forever" is a nice cover for Heatwave's original version, and "Whatever Happened To Us" is a nice slow jam if you're in the mood for something thought-provoking. "Right Next To Me" is definitely a top-notch slow jam for anyone that appreciates romantic music. Although some of their up-tempo songs aren't all that catchy, the whole album is pretty good to have in your collection.

Thank heavens for Malaco because the soul is still alive!
With R&B music becoming so image-conscious & profit-driven nowadays, it's easy to forget when it was all about the soul & the emotion was what carried the song. But for fans like me who like the "more real" soul music than today's unreasonable facsimile, Malaco Records is nothing less than a godsend. Time has not only stood still for them it seems, but it's also proven to be a home for those soul stars who've found themselves passed on by the major labels in favor of younger, more photogenic artists. One of those unknown legends is Denise LaSalle.People may know her best from her 1971 #1 R&B hit "Trapped By A Thing Called Love". In a rare feat at the time, Denise managed to write her hit single as well as sing it & this was still at a time when most R&B singers didn't have such freedom yet. While the song may have been her biggest commercial success, Denise wasn't content to fade into obscurity, for she kept on working & recording quality soul music even as it saw less & less success in terms of sales. But when she joined Malaco Records in 1984, she discovered not only could she continue making the music she wanted to make, but also make some of the best music of her entire career. One of the highlights of Denise's Malaco period is her 1992 album LOVE ME RIGHT.I'm not stretching the truth when I say that is one of the most upbeat & smile-inducing pieces of music you will ever listen to (even the rather half-hearted cover of Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" is still quite infectious). Whether or not she's rocking the bedroom or looking for true love, Denise wants to keep the music as light & fun as possible & LOVE ME RIGHT more than demonstrates that. Songs like "Don't Jump My Pony", "Long Dong Silver" & "You Can't Get Nothin' Straight Between Us" show Denise can be as up-front & no-holds-barred as they come. Yet just when you think she's said a little too much, the rhythm has already gotten to you & all that matters is you dancing up a storm. If you think today's more modern R&B is too suggestive, wait until you hear songs like these.But some action in the boudoir isn't all on Denise's mind. She wants a steady love just like all of us & this is proven with the title track, "When We're Making Love", "I'm Not That Kind Of Girl" & "Fast Hands & A Dirty Mind" (actually reflected on the man & not the singer). They go to show that even if you have a raging libido, there's still room for a heart of gold. At the same time, Denise can tell it like it is with respect to life & not just love. "Too Many Hungry Mouths Around The Table" has her telling a man if he can't provide for the family, don't come knocking down her door. An important message for all of us men to take to heart. "One More Wrong Step" reminds us to watch ourselves in whatever we do & that if we don't learn from our mistakes, they'll repeat themselves. "Don't Pick It Up" tells us to finish what we start & not engage in anything we can't handle. Who wouldn't take valuable lessons like these from a wise woman like Denise?To the uninitated, LOVE ME RIGHT (or almost any Malaco album) will sound too old-fashioned & just not with it. But punchy horn charts & sweeping strings are fast becoming a rarity in today's R&B music, as are full-bodied, powerful vocalists like Denise LaSalle. A lot of today's R&B "stars" were born almost after this kind of soul's golden age had passed & they probably have no idea how it once was. This was my first Denise album & as a fan of more organic soul, it was a relief to hear someone who doesn't sing about how much money they have or how fly they are. Singers & personalities like Denise don't exactly come a dime a dozen, so for a chance to hear a kind of music that's becoming too much the exception instead of the rule, LOVE ME RIGHT will certainly do you right.

Bessie? Millie? Naw, fool! Denise--Ms Lasalle, that is.
Admittedly, if you were not part of this scene, you'd probably never know--Ms Lasalle has written and recorded probably twice as many songs as that Roger Nelson guy and she has a following as devoted to her as strong as the Pokemon crazies are to Pikachu. She, however, doesn't get guest spots with RuPaul or does soda commercials like her comtemporary, Millie Jackson. Her stage shows are as rocking and raucous as say, a visit to BET's ComicView, but she keeps it considerably classy, especially when she does one of her Muscle Shoals and Delta tinged ballads. She has a performance nearly everyday somewhere in these United States in somewhat of an updating of the famed chitlin' circuit of years back and she's still layin' the law on them no-good lovers. We love her here in Oz, and until Malaco Records can come up with a box set or greatest hits on Malaco (like they did for Johnnie Taylor some years back), then we have the CDs like this classic with the tunes "Lady In The Streets" and "Down Home Blues" to play. (Besides, she is the singer they are REALLY playing in those R&B and blues joints across the nation.)

Ask Any Real Sista....
In any city of the nation and they can tell ya about Denise Lasalle, which song of hers she loves, and what was going on in her life when she first heard it. Brothers like me kinda can get with her'cause her sassiness is of the humorous kind a la Millie Jackson or Moms Mabley....not of the vindictiveness witnessed in whoever is the flavor of the week looking for a quick hit and fame. Naw, Denise has been around for a bit, and she knows that gambit ain't as glamorous as it seems... to me that means she's one of the real deals, and most of her fans love her for that. I know I do...this CD is another real good one from her Malaco Records years. It has a houserocking "Don't Cry No More" remake on it, a reggae flavored "Bring It On Home" and bluesbar favorites "Write This One Off" and "I Forgot to Remember". Watch out for her, especially as she gets the Jellyroll Award for Best Blues/Soul Artist.

Can a real Carla Thomas stand up please?
Carla Thomas was essentially a balad singer in heart who started with "Gee Whiz" and "Mama,Mama Wish Me Good Luck",just to be pushed in more commercial vein of "Stax" sound,the role of sexy seductive soul-godess that never suited her and lady herself (in liner notes) noted that 1966. was the moment when her music became more hit-heavy but strangely detached from her real personality.As the result,this 22 songs-compilation is almost a schizoprenic split of personality between early,young and romantic Thomas and later horn-bass-rhytm drenched "Stax" product,hit material that perhaps showed more of Thomas acting ability than her real vision of herself as a singer."Stax" was excellent company that produced exciting and energetic music,but it was a man's world (Sam & Dave,Otis Redding,Isaac Hayes...) and Thomas sweet voice & gentle personality would have much better suited to Dionne Warwick/Diana Ross/Mary Wells style - I have impression that while she gave "Stax" its first big kick with "Gee Whiz",the company slowly but surely pushed her in the back while changing music direction towards rhytmic numbers and her "Gee Whiz" was more of a past relic than something the company wanted to pursue.True,the second part of this CD compilation is recognisable "Stax" music but I can't shake the feeling that Carla Thomas was not there completely and she had just listen Isaac Hayes instructions.

Stevie Wonder "Motown Legends I was Made to Love Her" Album Review

His Best '60's Album
It's true. Not all the tracks are original songs, but enough of them are and I'd say about six are really, really good. I've known them all my life and I love them. Just great mid-'sixties Stevie that you haven't heard anywhere else before, not even on compilation albums.

I also love his renditions of 'Respect' and 'Can I Get A Witness', they both have a grooviness and originality of their own.

If you really like Stevie's mid-'60s sound, don't hesitate tracking this album down.

It's a real finger clicker.

'Everytime I See You I Go Wild' is wild and fabulous!

'I'd Cry' is divine. There's a wonderful irony to the way he sang sad songs in a fast uptempo way.

'Everybody Needs Somebody' has a wonderful, melodic, understated soulfulness.

Actually, the only song I've grown tired of is the title track and yes, there are a few fillers/duds that you'll want to skip, but the good far outweighs the bad.

He was very proud of this compilation when it came out and he was right to be.

A Shining Star
The English language does not have enough words to describe this incredible talent!! If you purchase this CD you will NOT be disappointed. One word that does describe Alexis is "Powerful".
I had the privilege of seeing her perform last year in Woodstock at Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble and was blown away by her and her Brooklyn based band (The Bennett Brothers). This CD moves you through a myriad of emotions and is well presented by recording engineer and producer Vicki Bell, who co-writes many of the selections and appears in the line up of back up singers as well. The musicianship is superb, and along with some very tasty engineer techniques makes this a must for your music library. As Alexis say's "There is something for everyone here", from the very soulful blues of "Never", the fast moving "Ride-Ride" and the pop sounding "More To This" (one of my favorites!), and don't miss "Da Hood". It is hard to categorize Alexis and this CD into a specific style of music, you will just have to listen and judge for yourself. You will come away smiling and feeling very satisfied.

Absolutely Superb!!
This is by far one of the best CD's I've purchased in the last 10 years or so. From beginning to end, she has a wonderful voice and the smooth music to create a CD that you don't have to skip through AT ALL. My personal favorite tracks are No Words, I Only Want You and Let Me Love You. She's even made a cover for Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" seem magical. I've bought this CD at least 5 times (four of them were gifts to friends and family) and she needs to get more air time. Support Janita everyone!!

Nice easy listening, with a Brazilian flavor!
I have enjoyed Brasil '66 since hearing Fool on the Hill on satellite radio. The group, working with jazz legend Herb Albert, covers a number of easy listening hits, though spicing them up with a Brazilian flair. Check out Fool on the Hill, With A Little Help From My Friends, and Scarborough Fair to see what I mean. Also check out Mais Que Nada, a nice song in Portuguese (you don't need to understand Portuguese to like the song - I only understand a few words). In short, this is a very nice sounding album for people who like soft, easy listening.

You Can Teach a Bear to Dance
You can teach a bear to dance, but don't expect him to enjoy it or look good doing it. It's hard to believe after the excellent "Don't Give Up on Me" (5 stars), anyone could make a Solomon Burke CD this bad. From the first notes of the first cut, I said to myself "Oh no". First there's the terrible mismatch of the material/arrangements which has Solomon's wonderful voice stretched to the breaking point on virtually every cut. Then there's the uninspired musicianship of the backing instumentals. And finally, even the back-up singers are often shrill and seldom mellow. This is my first review for Amazon & I'm doing it so that those who loved "Don't Give Up on Me" won't make the same mistake I did & buy "Make Do with What You've Got". If you bought this one first, don't give up on Solomon, just back up in time a little, or a lot.

An okay album
Sorry, but I have to disagree with most of the reviewers on this disc. I love Vanessa Williams, and I especially loved her "Sweetest Days" album (my favorite of hers), but this one is just okay.

I bought this about a year ago, and just got around to opening it and putting it in my disc player for my alarm (I had Luther in there for a long time). I can barely keep my eyes open when this music comes on, because it is so tepid. She has a great voice, but she interjects absolutely no emotion into these songs. It irks me, because it could have been so much better than it is. She picked great songs to cover, but they are songs that need life breathed into them, not songs that should just be song note for note, which is pretty much what is going on here.

Fabulous.
This is one of the best cd's I've purchased in years. Sharon Jones has this incredible voice- it sounds a bit weathered, like she's been there, done that. The band is really tight, and I'm not sure how long they've been playing together, but it sounds fantastic. They have an old school Motown/ funk thing going on, and all of the songs are really fun and energetic. I've been running my mouth off about this cd to my friends, so I figure I may as well do it on Amazon as well. Enjoy!

Of no use!
Unable to experience this cd due to it's inability to achieve audio output.
Although I ordered this product twice, showing my desire for it's content,
I was left as empty as it's audio output;(twice) and that hurt alot!!!

I have listened to this album again and again and it seems convince me that these days, the most popular are increasingly the lest talented. If Lokua is not the best african musician of his generation, he is certainly the best I know.
His sense of melody is truely unique and when coupled brilliant musicianship, one begins to understand why this guy would seduce anyone who dare listen to him. The music speaks for itself, and so eloquenty. The guitar lines are elegant and polished. The medolies are full of finesse and creativity. The rest is the talent of Nat King Cole, Bill Evans, and Frank Sinatra, multiplied by 10.

Another fantastic CD
The follow up to "Home of the Brave", this incredible artist has hit another home run! This is a very soulful CD with a great deal of variety. Staying true to her native and african american roots, Martha Redbone shows why she is fantastic songwriter and musician. There is also some excellent guitar work on this treat. I found this CD to more in line with traditional R&B than her previous CD, which just shows her amazing versatility. There's something on the CD for everyone. I would suggest one sit back relax and spend some quality time with this quality CD. It's proof positive that music is still alive and some of its best performers are unknown or don't receive ample recognition. that's really too bad because folks are going to miss out on some exceptional talent, and Martha Redbone is just that; an EXCEPTIONAL TALENT!

I was fortunate enough to meet and spend some time with George a few months ago. At the time I didn't own any of his cd's, but now I do, and I gotta say he is incredibly talented! I don't usually listen to this style of music, but my wife loves it, so I try to find artists that I find bearable so we don't end up fighting over the car radio on trips. I find myself being the one to recommend putting George in the cd player. He is a great artist, and a wonderful person to boot. In person he is just as genuine, kind, and nice as he appeared on Idol, and that carries through to his music. Great guy. Great music. Great purchase!

Late Night Love Music
Marlena's latest release is simply beautiful. A mixture of simple yet interesting arrangements with a trio and sometimes percussion, excellent songs produce Marlena's most relaxed vocals in decades.On this album she doesn't shoot the sparks that she can, she opts to just sit back and let her unique phrasing and time do their thing. She's been around long enough to know that great songs can just be sung and if you're comfortable with the song, the results will be special. The music starts with "Hope In A Hopeless World". It has great lyric and the Stevie Wonder reference after the bridge drew chuckles for it's pertinence to the song. Marlena sounds divine! "New York State Of Mind" is given a nice mid-tempo treatment and Marlena glides right through. "For All We Know" is one of my all-time favorites and Marlena keeps it there- She's great with ballads and even with all of her vocalisms, never over sings. "Just The Two Of Us" is so fresh with a new tempo and Marlena just makes you feel every word! "Everything Must Change" is Marlena doing Bernard Ighner (who played a major hand in her other classic "Who Is This Bitch?")- It's fabulous. "Here's To Life" would be worth the price of the album, even if the rest weren't this good. "Easy Living" is just oh so nice. "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" is Marlena revisiting her first hit from the 60s and she has now recorded it for new listeners- We're glad she did.

Transported to another world..
This Cd with it's heavy bass lines and exquisite surprises tucked mid-way within each song, is one of my favorites. The first 3 songs are AWESOME. Many others are notable. Track #8 "Selfish Tendencies" is raw. I was so excited when I got the Cd (at work) that I ran down to the parking lot to listen to it in my car. When the CD ended, I had to "shake it off" because I was in the zone. You feel like you've stepped into someone else's life - and that's what makes her music so special. This Cd is chill, unique and unlike your typical "never hear from them again neo-soulers". If you like complex beats, tight bass lines, a unique voice and lyrics that twist and turn - then this CD is for you. You won't be disappointed!

The Stylistics "The Stylistics" Album Review

Their Harmony Is Unbelievable: Musical Ecstasy
I am maninly a rap fanatic, and I am mad young, and I ain't gone front, I know litle about this great soul group, but I will say this, this collective has some great 70's soul jams with great vocals and sweet hooks and smooth jams. Fans of Delfonics and similar groups who have not yet checked the Stylistics out should. Russel Thompkins Jr.'s mountain high falsetto is cool. "You Are Everything" is one of the best songs I have ever heard. I love how songs like this build up to a musical and vocal climax from the beginning of each verse to the wonderfully harmonic choruses. I love the simple lyrics of the song, and how deep the emotions are behind them. It is such a beautiful song. This jam along with "You Make Me Feel Brand New (my close 2nd fav here) really captivate the soul. I would like to experience the emotions the singers and writers had while creating these classics. "People Make The World Go Round" is a cool jam dealing with social issues in society. "Break Up To Make Up" is a little sadder and slower and as emotionally rich as any other here. It analyzes a rocky relationship with sweet yet somber vocals. I would have loved to grow up in a musical era with such rich songs. I love the airy chorus of "Betcha By Golly Wow" and "Stone In Love With You" and the breezy, sweet vibes they give off. "You're A Big Girl Now" is a bit upbeat and funky adressing a love interest coming of age. For some reason to me, this joint sounds cool for lowriding. If you like slower soul jams with breathtaking heavenly vocals and instruments, then this Stylistics collective has all the cool slow jams to evoke those feelings for ya boo. These songs all have a magical feel to them and define real soul music. Anyone going retro like me and exploring older soul should start with groups like The Stylistics.

Unbelievable Debut!!! Best album I have heard in a long long time
I don't know how I found this album, I think it was through Amazons or ITunes recommendations. However I am extremely happy that I did. It is one of the most engaging albums I have ever heard. What effects me the most is the harmony of the production and her voice. The music plays off of her voice so well, its seems improvisational much like jazz, but its not. Its very hard to classify, and that is [art of what makes it so beautiful to me. My favorite songs from the album are Demise and Larva both of which are outstanding and sound so different then anything out now. My only complaint about this album is that it is to short, but it lends itself to repeated listens. The music is so rich I discover something new about it everytime I listen to it.

I love this cd!!!
I picked up a used copy of this CD just this year because I have always like Melba Moore. It has become one of my favorite Christmas cds. I think it may have been a little ahead of its time when it was initially released. It is not a cd for those that like their Christmas songs sung in the usual traditional way. Melba infuses stong vocals with R&B and Gospel influences. I found it to be totally refreshing and emotionally moving.
For a change of pace from the usual, this was certainlly a welcome relief!

This, I would have to say is absolutely, right on. Rufus and Chaka Kahn, were, and as far as I'm concerned one of the best from the 70's. This CD features some of the best from the group. Ray Charles "Genius Loves Company" Album Review

Well named
I love music, but I'm not a "word guy". Words and voice must be musical in addition to their meaning. Too many singers don't understand this as well as they should. Most of the singers on this album seem to understand that their voice is not just for recitation of the lyrics but is an instrument - and they excel at it. This is truly a wonderful album to listen to and I just never tire of it.

Ray has obviously mastered his craft and it shows in this album. You can clearly hear him mentoring Norah Jones in "Here We Go Again" and hear the pride in his voice when she rises to his standards. And Billy Preston and his Hammond B3 is so important there that it's almost a trio rather than a duet.
You can hear the give and take as he nudges Elton John out of his usual style and the delight when it works. The synergy with BB King is that of two old friends in a tight game of rummy - each with his own style and each knowing the others so well that neither wins or loses and both are happier for it. Bonnie Raitt seems to carry "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?" with Ray just along for a ride, but it works perfectly.
There is so much music here and so much pride and so much joy. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

Etta James, National Treasure
This is one of the most pleasurable CDs on the market. This collection of Etta's songs showcases her considerable talent as a blues singer. Though the instrumentation is dated on some of the songs (the strings soar a little too high), her voice saves the day, alternately powerful and vulnerable.

Her version of "I Just Want to Make Love to You" rocks harder than the Rolling Stones version, and that is no small feat. 'At Last' is a great song, and her vocal interpretation is the best out of many artists who attempted it. 'Sunday Kind of Love' is another masterpiece, as is her rendition of 'Stormy Weather'. Not a bad song on the record.
Etta James is a national treasure. Thanks for the beautiful, heart-felt music.

As an aside, does anyone else see a resemblance between Etta's singing and Janis Joplin?

Truth Hurts "Ready Now" Album Review

Truth is more than ready
Truth's second album, Ready Now succeeds her debut in a number of ways. Unlike Truthfully Speaking, Ready Now isn't full of the A-list producers her debut featured. Truth's music isn't hurt by the abscense of big names such as Timbaland or Dr. Dre. Working with lesser known producers can be a step in the right direction for artists being that it creates a more "original" sound. Production wise Tony Toni Tone frontman, Raphael Saadiq takes on the production duties among others. Saadiq known for his bluesy southern soul and funk works well with Truth. On the funky title track, Truth sings over a pulsating beat that sucks you in with illict lyrics. Truth also seems to have toned down on her vocals which before were all over the place. This time Truth is more subdued delivering smoldering sexy soul music which is slowly becoming her trademark. While this album isn't as commercial as her first release listeners will enjoy Truth's sassiness and sense of humor. Truth hurts, but it definitely feels good!

Ray Charles "American Soul" Album Review

Great mini-collection at a great price!
After watching the Ray Charles biopic, I went poking around looking for a good single album of Ray Charles' to add to my collection. I didn't expect this CD to fit that bill. It was 4 bucks at Wal-Mart and the generic artwork had me worried that I'd get some horrible sounding recordings. My primary interest was the song from Groundhog Day, "You Don't Know Me."

Not only did I get a lovely version of that song, but I got a whole bunch of other beautiful songs, too! The only one that doesn't quite fit is "What'd I Say" and that's only because it's a live recording instead of a studio recording. Very lush arrangements give it a great old-time feel. If you think you'll only ever be a casual fan of Ray Charles' music, and you like it when he keeps it on the slow, soft side, this is a great alternative to the pricey duets CD that I see everywhere.

James Ingram (born February 16, 1956 in Akron, Ohio) singing "One Hundred Ways" is an American soul musician, famous for his smooth vocal performances. Apart from being a great crooner or crooning he is also a producer and songwriter. Life and work As a self-taught musician who plays piano, guitar, bass, drums and synthesizer, Ingram began his career in the 70's as part of the band Revelation Funk starring Bernard Lawson Sr also from Akron, Ohio. During this time, Ingram developed a reputation in the Los Angeles area as a session vocalist, and came to the attention of ex-Motown songwriter and producer Lamont Dozier. Dozier invited Ingram to contribute vocals to some material; one such song, "Love's Calling," garnered some airplay. The remainder of the material surfaced in 1980 on an album entitled Zingara. In 1980, Ingram provided the vocals to "Just Once" and "One Hundred Ways" on Quincy Jones's album The Dude. He won a Grammy award for best R&B or rhythm and blues vocal performance for his work on Jones' album, "The Dude." Ingram's debut album, It's Your Night, appeared in 1983, including the ballad "There's No Easy Way." He also worked with other great musical artists such as Ray Charles, Michael McDonald, Patti Austin, Anita Baker, Viktor Lazlo, Nancy Wilson, Natalie Cole, and Kenny Rogers. Ingram performed two solos on the 1985 recording and video of "We Are the World" and was featured on "Somewhere Out There," a duet with Linda Ronstadt on the soundtrack to the 1986 film An American Tail. He also won a 1985 Grammy Award for "Yah Mo B There," a duet with Michael McDonald. He also co-wrote "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" that was recorded by Michael Jackson on his blockbuster Thriller. During the summer of 2006, James participated in the U.S. television reality show Celebrity Duets as a duet partner. The show combined professional vocalists, of different musical genre, with entertainers of different backgrounds in a weekly elimination competition. The winner of the contest was Alfonso Ribeiro. The prize was a monetary donation sent to a charity of the winner's choice. Mojoe "Classic Ghetto Soul" Album Review

Highly recommended for fans of Roots, Outkast, Odd Squad, D'Angelo
These boys put the output of major record labels to shame!

I found this CD after doing a search on another site for groups that sound like the Roots and noticed all the stellar reviews. After taking a listen to the sample tracks, I had to buy it. Now I rarely leave the house without it and few other CD's have gone into my car stereo since.

This is a SLAMMING! concoction of blues, funk, R&B, jazz, and most importantly real Hip-Hop. It would be impossible for me to pick stand-out tracks since it's all good. Even the few interludes are short, unobtrusive and entertaining. This album, along with Maktub's Khronos, goes near the top of my list as one of the best, most soulful independent releases of the past decade.

In addition to sounding similar to the acts listed in my review title, they bring something all their own to the table. The rapping is better than most chart-topping Hip-Hoppers, the singing is better than any rap album has a right to, and the music is so good that these fellas could sell the album as an instrumental.

Please purchase this album, spread the word to your friends and family, and continue to promote good music in the face of mediocrity fed to the public by record companies and commercial radio. Plus, if all my raving doesn't convince you that Mojoe's "Classic.Ghetto.Soul." lives up to its title, just take a listen. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting... or in this case the hearing.

Muitas vezes define-se o jazz pelo improviso,

No matter what language, everyone wants to define "jazz" musics, and the hybrid movements that followed.

Bertrami, Mamão and Malheiros are legend from incendiary days backing Marcos Valle and their first musical endeavours, and Azymuth has been a staple of the jazz musics performed with electric instruments that is touched by funk and "R&B " elements, as well as, in this case the famous MPB, "música popular brasileira"!

To the few who may be uninitiated, Azymuth is a wonderful musical stew;
~~ José Roberto Bertrami on multiple electric keyboards and piano,who can be compared to Josef Zawinul, except that Bertrami has his own unique flavour

~~ Alex Malhieros , Rickenbacker bass and violão, occasional electric guitar, the Rickenbacker gives the bottom a special edge, along with

~~ the incredible powerful drum of Mamão, Malheiros and Mamão can be compared, they are a unit much like the famous Tower of Power duo of David Garibaldi and Rocco Prestia!

For one lucky to see Azymuth "ao vivo" (live show), they go beyond the catagory they usually are given in USA, put in the "smooth jazz" , a misnomer.

Bertrami and grupo can be, given any evening, quite experimental, but the recordings are usually of the lovely melody, pretty chords (Bertrami's chord voicings gorgeous), funky grooves, all served up with the Brasilian tradition!

This CD, a recording from England's "FAR OUT" label promotes the dance hall affair love England has with Brailian sounds, and features glorious vocals from Brasilian samba funk vocal giant Emilio Santiago, and less known Marcio Lott, who sings "over the moon" also!

Not as much a jazz/funk outing as a very nice popular funk /soul recording, much as Marcos Valle has been releasing the last few years.

"Demais" in particular, a standout vocal track, while "Pra Zé" features contribution from mestre Roberto Menescal, "Roda Piao" just insane FUN!

Not for the heavy jazzers with a prejudice against electric sounds, but I am sure the discerning ear of the most "elitista" jazz entusiast can detect the virtuosity of this famous trio and their guests!

Oh my goodness, Eran James is a star!!!
I have to say, this kid is going places. I saw his music video a year ago on an international sort of music channel, and lucked out enough to have a friend bring this cd back from australia. SO worth the effort! This cd is a classic that everyone should have! I don't usually listen to this type of music, but I was blown away. To this day, it's still one of my top five favorite cd's and the fact that a guy this young can do justice to "I'm so tired of being alone" is even better! Thank you Eran James, you're awesome!!!

Bangin' Album
I recently went crate diggin for the first time in NYC and while I was there this album was playing in the background. Needless to say, I was blown away by the vocal and chord arrangements I was listening to. This album has a feel to it that will take you straight back to the 70s. The title cut "Make It Last Forever" is a classic right from the gate. Donna McGhee's voice is absolutely gorgeous over these disco-driven tracks. If you break yourself away from the music and listen to what she is saying, there is definitely a love/sexual message there. You can tell she is coming from the heart. Props to Greg Carmichael and Patrick Adams for putting together a fantastic album. This is a classic worth having and it has me looking for other Donna McGhee projects. The girl can go! One of my friends asked to borrow it and I replied: "No my brother. You gotta buy ya own!!!" For real though, you have to get this.

Bettye Swann "Bettye Swann" Album Review

A revelation!
I bought this item based on the other excellent reviews here and my own craving for relatively obscure music. I must say that I do play this CD constantly and I've made multiple copies in the event that the original wears out! Bettye is absolutely amazing; I wish there were even more of her available on CD. I now also own her Money Recordings which are also absolutely worthwhile. It is a crime that Bettye wasn't more widely recognized and has now vanished into obscurity. A singer with such grace, power, and sensitivity should never herself have gone "unsung". Reviewers elsewhere have called her "low-key", I suppose because while one cannot deny her soulfulness, she sings with an economy that nonetheless carries great emotion. Witness her performance on "Closed for the Season" or "Little Things": Bettye can belt it, but she doesn't need to because her voice is so exquisitely expressive otherwise. In sum, I cannot sing the praises of this CD highly enough. I can listen to it all the way through and enjoy every track. With all of the decidedly soul-less music out there today, Bettye is truly a revelation from yesterday.

James Brown "Soul and Funky" Album Review

Pure unadulterated, nasty, booger nosed funk!
You can't ask for a better anthology than this one. The tracks are all classics and what impressed me very much were the liner notes, which gave a nice detailed mini bio on the band's history, which I knew very little of. It's a great read and goes into the tension between key members of the group. I know more about them now and that's a good thing!

In the end, you will recognize many of these tracks because they've been sampled nearly to death. I think every track here has been used multiple times by various hip hop artists and I was actually surprised enough to say, 'Oh, so that's where they got that loop from!' more than a couple of times.

Oh yeah, before I forget, I think Eddie Murphy said it perfectly when he commented that there was no way the band understood anything that James Brown was saying to them. Listen to the first track on this disc and see if you agree.

One of the best purchases you can make, without any reservations.

Excellent cd
This is a great cd. The title says it all with "Heart & Soul". beats are smooth and lyrics are very good. Vacal arrangement is also excellent. Its easy to realate to what he talks about in his songs.
