If you’ve ever been sent a promo by Gadi Mizrahi from Wolf + Lamb you’ve probably noticed the (G$) after the filename. At first we were kind of confused but then he explained that he puts that there after he masters a track on the system at The Marcy and then we started calling it the G$ pump. Of course Gadi soon just became G$ and when he discovered a newfound love for hip-hop it seemed even more appropriate. It’s pretty surprising that a native Brooklynite only got into hip-hop later in life but there are lots of things about G$ that are surprising, like this mix, which randomly appeared in our inboxes the day we got to Berlin. Obviously we’re all massive 30 Rock fans, but it seems G$ loves Tracey Morgan so much that he made this mix, an hour long journey through deep and heavy hip-hop, trip-hop and of course Tracey Morgan. When he told us we could podcast it we pooped in the pool and we hope you’re just as excited by this totally unique creation from one of dance music’s true visionaries and of course one of our closest friends. It sure has been awhiiiile since we did a mixTape time, but when DJ Three sent me this drum & bass mix he did 1996 it seemed like the perfect way to bring it back for 2 reasons. First, because we had Three on mixTape time way back in 2008 before we even knew him personally. Second, because we’ve been loving the old school jungle/d&b sounds lately. It started with our remake of Goldie’s Inner City Life that just dropped on Crosstown Rebels, but seems to have been following us everywhere so we’ve even done our new Beatport chart with all our favorite jungle/d&b classics. Check this mix and you’ll see why!

Here’s a blurb he wrote about it for the Hallucination message board years back…

Rave culture having the musical timeline it does I had always been into drum n
bass and its various incarnations, albiet some more than others. Drum n’ bass
to me was a tempo thing rather than a specific sound, but thats another (rather
unnecessary) story.

(1995 / 1996) Genrally speaking, Drum n Bass was getting knee-deep in its
“golden era” around this time. It was finally starting to cross into other
areas and all sorts of people and artists were taking note. Richie Hawtin was
spotted at Fabio and LTJ Bukem’s “Speed” night in London. Sasha had a chart of
favorites in The Face magazine. Proverbial “outsiders” to the drum n bass scene
like Ashley Beadle and his Balistic Brothers outfit had released an excellent
drum n’ bass record on Junior Boys Own that DJ’s warmed to — the first of many
“outsider” contributions to come. Bjork dated Goldie (LOL). All these signs
of a scene and sound disocvering it was, for now, the eyes of the world.

House and Techno DJ’s from San Francisco (Markie of Wicked) to Paris
(Laurent Garnier) et al were beginning to stretch their wings and incorporate
some bits into their sets much the same way they would some electro,
dub and so on. I had experimented a bit (mostly at Florida institutions Simons
and The Firestone) myself and began to find a common aesthetic between house /
lounge-type crowds and certain drum n’ bass records. So, when i was asked by
Jask (Tampa deep house mainstay / Large Records, Soulphuric etc…) to play the
last night of his long running “Martini Jazz Thursdays” I decided to start
straight from the top with grooves i thought would work, but were certainly not
what anyone was expecting. Recorded off a TDK SA-60 with a little digital work
to fill the gap between side A & B…here’s what went down. Thanks to Jask.

mixTape Time 21: DJ Three’s Martini D&B Mix (circa 1996)

So on our latest trip to Chicago we were lucky enough to get picked up at the airport in a cherry red ‘61 Chevy Impala convertible (thanks Maryrose & Elena). It’s definitely the coolest car either of us have ever been in, but what’s a cool car without a cool soundtrack?! Luckily our girls were bumping a brand new live recording of our favorite Chi-Town mixmaster, Phil Stone. If you’ve been paying attention then you know that Phil Is Ill and once again he has absolutely blasted our minds. Apparently the story is that Phil recorded this mix on a cloudy after(party)noon and when the skys opened up everyone ran outside and started dancing in the rain. For us, this beautiful blend of laid back disco grooves is absolutely perfect for all your summertime needs, especially BBQs and beaches, but most importantly a sweaty summertime bedroom! Enjoy…

One of the privileges of programing a podcast is the ability to uncover new DJ talent. Such is the case with 23 year old Parisian, Funkalicious James. An elementary school classmate with Le Loup, these two make up the production duo Childhood ‘87, featured on Aux-Rec (on the flip side of our Baker Man release) with an edit of Inner Life’s “I’m Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)”. PS, vinyl copies are still available here.

Growing up Funkalicious James was deeply influenced by his mothers jazz and R&B records as well as his cousins favorite hip-hop acts like Gang Starr and Arrested Development. Around 2004 he got into deep house going to party at places like Cheers @ The Djoon. There he made the discovery that the music of his childhood was heavily sampled and the core of this new dance music. He was hooked and set his sights on becoming a DJ.

Funkalicious’ DJ sets are self described as “a milkshake” of his childhood influences thru the filter of deep house. We dug his mix, can you?

When we first made it to Made Event’s now legendary WMC closing bash 4 years ago we we’re completely blown away. The party was still at the now defunct (and sorely missed) Pawn Shop parking lot and I’m pretty sure Sunday School was the only day of the year they opened up out there, so it was really special. It was basically way too packed with the hot ass sun cooking your ass while getting absolutely mental to the most upfront house/techno DJs in the world and boy did it leave a lasting impression. While, some people complained when the event moved to Ice Palace in ‘09, I think the added grassyness and extra space outside made the new digs an even more fun place to party, plus having the inside area in a massive warehouse space is the perfect environment for slamming Adam Beyer style techno.

Needless to say, when we were asked to play Sunday School this year we were totally honored and blown away and when we found out we got the 9:30-11am outside set time we were even more excited. If you know us, you know this is pretty much our dream gig and time slot, so we immediately got to work preparing the perfect set to reach the more techno oriented crowd, but still showcase our unique sound. Saturday night we hit the sack super early, got up fresh at 6am, hit Latin Cafe 2000 for breakfast sandwiches and Cuban coffee and headed down to get in the morning time vibes. It was a bit cloudy all day but there were some amazing moments when the floaty jams brought out the sun, the crowd response was beyond anything we could have imagined and we even ended up with this here awesome recording to share with everyone! Most of all, thanks to the entire Made Event team for being super pro, all our friends for getting up early/staying up late and smiling and going crazy in front of the booth, Zoe for being Ms America, DJ T for dancing on stage the whole time and of course Betty Kang. We can’t do it without all yalls support

For obvious reasons Episode 69 is pretty important here on the mothership. So when we realized that it was coming up we thought about maybe skipping it until we could get a special Soul Clap mix ready. That was until I heard Mazda’s sound of one soul clapping mix, or more importantly, made love to Mazda’s mix and justified the perfect Episode 69. Mazda aka Audio Prophecy is a Boston-based DJ and aspiring producer who understands the importance of mature and sexy music and this style shines through on the mix, which I had to rename in honor of the occasion.

The only way I could explain my relationship with music is obssessive addiction, Never satsified with what I have in hands and always looking for my next fix. It started with collecting, searching for the rare releases and then the urge to share / twist/ edit and spin followed. My message to everybody out there: It’s Ok not to fit into a particular grid or style or image. The sound of one hand clapping is dedicated to that spirit. Most of the artists on this mix have somewhat shown their middle finger to the man and did their own thing and subsequently succeeded at it. We got the deep spacey sounds of Space Ranger (former Dublex inc members), Crowdpleaser and Autodeep (future stars of deep house), to the nu-disco funk of Maurice Fulton, Lindstrom, Aeroplane and Tensnake, & the global sounds of Moodymanc and DJ Disse (Music for Dreams). No self respecting soul clap mix would come without a few left field edits, here we have bloodfire’s remix of James Brown (GAMM), and re-boots of Curtis Mayfield and D-train. The mix ends with soulful sounds of Trus’me, Rick poppa Howard and Glimpse leading to spiritual nirvana of Lightness by Dollar Mambo (newly signed to Mental Groove). Way back in November 2008 we posted a mix from 1988 by old school Boston house legend Eddie Neal with a whole back story (which proves how small the world is) and interview (which includes a major Boston dance music history lesson). Now, Eddie has hit us up again with some new recordings from the vault. This time around we travel to 1990 for a Chicago style house jackup that perfectly contextualizes the current Chicago house sound revival. Here’s what Eddie had to say:

This mix came about in the Summer of 1990. Four months prior to the mix, I left the HUB CLUB in Boston where I had served as one of the resident DJs and Promotions Manager for about two years. “The Decade Dance” was the clubs welcoming in 1990 New Year’s Eve Party. It was a big production I had planned with attention to every detail. The best club and house music from each year from 1980 to 1990 was showcased every 30 minutes in spectacular fashion with special celebrity introductions, sound effects, remixes. For me, it was about the music and the heads on the dance floor. After New Year’s the club started to veer away from its rep as an underground house music venue. It was time to go.In the months that followed, I returned to the private mobile sector, continued working in radio and helped kick-off the short-lived “Underground” in the South End. However I missed the wild Hub Club Friday and Saturday nights where I could tell a story with the music. Housemaster B is a throwback to the earlier era of underground house with a few influences of hip hop and acid.

Life sure is full of coincidences, so i guess it makes sense that we got an email from UK dance music veteran Demi asking us to air a very special mix on our podcast while we were in London in January. While he’s been a major name in the game for a long time many of our listeners might not know Demi, because we’re from different musical worlds, but his SOS crew, which also includes, Omid16B and Desyn Masiello, has always been a guiding light in the world of tech/prog house. For us SOS first came to our attention with Desyn’s superb 2004 Bedrock compilation, which led us to check out an amazing SOS performance at WMC the following year. While their sound might not line up exactly with where we’re at these days, there’s no doubt these guys are DJ’s DJs, with impeccable selection and skill that shine through no matter what your taste.

So now you’re probably wondering how we ended up with a Demi mix on The Adventures Of Soul Clap. Apparently he’s been following our podcast for awhile now and felt it was the perfect home for this awesomely eclectic masterpiece of a mix. What makes this episode even more special is that the mix is a tribute to his friend and influential Londoner Jonny Rhythm who recently passed away and who’s memory lives on through this music.

Here’s what Demi says: “The mix is a reflection of some very special and personal moments shared with him and the eclectic tastes we shared. The mix was a labor of love and ended up being a work in progress for a year because of the varied sounds and samples/snips spliced and put together.”

We first met William Rauscher of Night Plane at the Marcy Hotel outside in the yard. It had been a long night and it was a beautiful Brooklyn morning and when we were introduced, his name immediately rang a bell. Wasn’t he the Resident Advisor writer who did the label of the month feature on Wolf + Lamb? He was! And wasn’t he the guy who reviewed the Love Light Edits EP on Wolf + Lamb Black? YES! Oh and didn’t he give us only 3 1/2 stars??? Well turns out William is a tough critic and this we can appreciate, but we told him “it was nice to meet you, but we only give this experience 3 1/2 stars”.

All ball busting aside, William is more than just a writer/blogger, he is also a very talented producer. His project Night Plane sounds like a stunning combination of new disco, house, jazz, rock and psychedelia that couldn’t be more timely as the lines of dance music continue to blur. Samples, synths and tons of reverb, William’s music is really impressive and when we received his mix of ALL ORIGINAL material, we knew we had podcast gold.

When it comes to the few North Americans seriously stacking their discographies in recent years, few can compete with Jonny White. Representing Toronto, Jonny has been just slaying the Techno/House genre with releases on his own No. 19 Music, Ripperton’s Perspectiv Records and a ton of remix work including a feature alongside Tiefschwarz for Crosstown Digital Rebels. Unfortunately we’ve still never met face to face, however we’re already quite familiar with his music after discovering his after hours treasure “Rainsong” (No. 19 Music) back in 2008 and what a tune!

We asked Jonny to do a podcast a while back and this one came together live at his pad in Toronto New Years Day after a night of madness! Right before Thanksgiving we did a mini US tour of New York, Chicago and Detroit and it felt pretty amazing. Everywhere we went we debuted new Soul Clap music and every time people went crazy. It really blew our minds to get such a great response in America, especially at such an American time as Thanksgiving. I’m not going to get into a discussion about the moral implications of t-day, but I will say it’s a special time for family and friends to get together here in the states so it meant alot for us to get so much love in our home country. Now, before it’s too late we wanted to give you, our beloved listeners all over the world a taste of what our pre t-day tour sounded like. This recording is the first hour of our 3 hour, early morning set at Brooklyn’s Market Hotel for Airdrop’s Late Supper. It features a bunch of exclusive new Soul Clap music, some of which has been released, but mostly is forthcoming and never coming out. Part 3 of the mix is a bit deeper for the sunrise and should be coming out on Airdrop’s Airpod in the next few weeks, so stay tuned.

During our recent visit to the homeland Chicago to play Noe & Fred’s Souvenir party we finally got a chance to hang with Phillip Stone. Many of you may already have this guy’s stuff, just check your iTunes and search for “Phil Edit” or “Phil’s Dub”, that’s where we first saw his name. For year’s Phil has built a name for himself getting his super-DJ-friendly edits of new heat and classic cuts (which he makes with Audacity!!! go figure) into the right hands. Plus with advanced mixing skill, extraordinary programing ability and a slew of high profile DJ gigs opening for the big boys in his home town, it is commonly noted that Phil Stone is Chicago’s best DJ. 2009 was without a doubt the year that Soul Clap’s edits and bootlegs got the worlds attention.  It all started with a burning passion for classic pop music followed by a newfound obsession with Ableton LIVE.  Soul Clap’s prior production techniques found them held hostage by Logic in an unbelievably slow moving world of “Core Audio Errors” and system crashes.  I mean really, WTF?  Who would have thought a $3,000 Dual Core Mac and software investment would lead to such misery? Sorry… had to vent, where were we… right…

This powerful combination of theory and method resulted in a slew of projects that would go on to shape the Soul Clap sound and with the support of the Brooklyn based megalith Wolf + Lamb as well as countless DJ’s around the globe, this force has bolstered a new trend in dance music.

The “RnB FreE.P.” is the first installment of Soul Clap’s free music series.  This series will showcase unreleased, but dance-floor-tested material for free download on our website.  This first release is a special thank you to our fans and supporters this holiday season. With an R ‘n B theme, the FreE.P. features reworks and remixes of famed Bostonian Bobby Brown’s late 80’s hit “Humpin Around”, fallen diva Aaliyah’s seductive “Rock The Boat” and 90’s Waco Texas based pop quintet Hi-Five’s Kissing Game all mastered by Gadi Mizrahi @ The Marcy Hotel.

Please note, this music is made out of a labor of love, but as we all know, love is really hard to eat.  So, for those sympathetic to the art of starving there is a choice for optional donation.  All proceeds will go to the making of more dope dance music by Soul Clap!

Sure has been awhile since we posted anything about Soul Clap releases, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy putting music out on both our label homes (Airdrop and Wolf + Lamb). Since we last posted about our MJ Edits EP on W+L in August, we’ve had our first all original artist EP “The Definition” released on Airdrop 12″ vinyl + digital. Then in October our second Wolf + Lamb Black 12″ vinyl release, the “Pop Edits” was sent out into the word. Next, mid-November our remixes of No Regular Play’s “Smiling Faces” & “Derecha” hit Beatport, with both breaking the deep house top 100 and Smiling peaking at #22. Finally, this week, our collaboration with Le Loup, “I Want You” was featured as a digital bonus on W+L’s Significant Others Too EP. For those of you paying attention, Baker Man Edit comes out on AUX 12″ vinyl this month and we’ve got loads more instore for 2010, so stay tuned!

So a couple weeks ago we got a message from our website from someone named Leonardo Machado. He said something like “I’m 15 years old, from Venezuela and I have this mix and was hoping maybe you can podcast it”. We love our fans and the first 2 tracks were Wicked Game Edit and 3 Wheel E-Motion, so we said what the heck let’s give it a listen. Guess what, it was awesome. It’s taken us a little while to get our act together and post the episode and he’s updated the mix a bit, but we’re just super excited to have the chance to get an awesome mix out to you from a bonafide DJ prodigy. Another month, another silly Soul Clap interview. This time with UK based fashion/culture/music trendsetter Dazed Magazine’s digital edition. Read the whole thing here.

Somewhere along our last European tour we were in Berlin and our good friend Voitek (spelled Wojchiech, believe it our not) from 3 Channels aka Catz ‘n Dogz told us it was time to go to dinner. So to dinner we went, and when we got there we met Jay Shepheard. Jay is from the UK, but recently made the pilgrimage to Berlin along with so many others in search of dance music’s holy grail (which we think is actually somewhere in NYC!).

Jay is a kick ass DJ and solid producer with the bulk of his catalog on Munich’s Compost Records and Compost Black. Remix-wise he’s done work for Buzzin’ Fly, Four:Twenty, Dirt Crew and Faze Action to name a few. But that’s not really the point, the point is that after drinking many very tall beers and talking plenty of shit, we went back to Jay’s place (conveniently located across the street from the Neo-Nazi’s) to skin up and talk some more shit. While shit-talking, Jay put on this mix he recorded LIVE and we were like, ROCKINNNNN! So, away we go…

The Adventures of Soul Clap Episode 58: Soul Clap in Leeds Pt. 2

So you probably noticed that we disappeared from the blog for awhile. Basically our hosting company (1and1, never use them, they suck) has a limit on the size of databases they host and no way to get more space. The timing was horrible and we didn’t have time to fix it before euro-tour so we could only keep you up to date on facebook and twitter while we were gone (both worth checking, but not as in depth as the blog). Well we’ve finally got our hosting sorted and now we can spend the next week updating the blog on everything that’s gone down since the end of August when it died. We just posted our animated interview with Heidi and last week got a new podcast episode up of part 1 (of 3) of our 4 hour set in Leeds.

There’s been much ado about dance music in our little twisted world this week. To top things off we got some numbers back for Beatport sales on our Wolf + Lamb Edits and much to our surprise, we’re BIG IN JAPAN. Not sure if its because of the Soul Clap Tween-Anime fan club over there, but we certainly hope it is, hehe.

Also, necessary big ups to our good friend Chinua Green for being “oh so current” with his Mixmag subscription, and to the great Jamie Jones for making our Conscious Edit #1 on his chart this month (see below)!

Speaking of big-ups, the princess of BBC Radio One, Mz Heidi Vanden Amstel went above and beyond on her latest “In New DJ’s We Trust” show with what may just be the illest Boston shout out of ALL TIME! Her time here in Boston was such a pleasure, and her DJ set at Midweek Techno, FAHGETABOUTIT! Heidi, you got straight up FAM in the bean girl, FO REALZ, please come back any time For those who haven’t heard this last show, check here, the shout out is 16 minutes in and its full of serious bombs AND a piece of her tag team set with Justin Martin from Exit Festival last month.

One last piece of news, we are proud to announce our next 2 big releases! Coming 8/4 it’s our first Wolf + Lamb digital EP (artwork at the top of this post). The release features a collection of three Michael Jackson tribute tracks including two from us titled Michael Went To Heaven (110 bpm) and Michael Went To Hell (108 bpm) as well as a cut from the No Regular Play boys called Things I Know, which features a Greg Paulus/MJ duet (figures). THEN 8/28 our next AirDrop release drops on vinyl. It’s our 4th vinyl on our original musical home (and their 11th vinyl so far) and we’re calling it the Definition EP because it marks the many new directions of our original music. We’re REALLY proud of this one and can’t wait for it to go out into the world

Something for the weekend… Something to get you excited for No Regular Play’s Boston debut with Soul Clap at Midweek Techno next Wednesday (7/15/09)… Something…

…that I think we’ve been waiting for since we met these crazy faukers earlier this year, but they’re so busy being amazing that it took a little while for them to get it to us. Needless to say, it was well worth the wait. Can you say perfect mix of deep, wierd, house, techno, vocals, grooves, whatever? Can you say beautiful? The mix is dedicated to their friend Connor aka Onno, who runs the Cut&Mistake blog, appeared on their 1st EP and got hit by a car while they were getting it ready. Thankfully he’s doing fine now, but this one goes out to him!

If you don’t know already, No Regular Play, or NRP (like NPR, but with the P and the R switched, I know you saw the stickers in Miami and Deetroit) for short, is the duo of Greg Paulus and Nick DeBruyn. Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota (of all places) they moved to NYC awhile ago and are now part of this new generation of American producers that are turning dance music on its head. Their boundary pushing and amazingly wierd yet groovey Blonde Juan EP was released last year on Wolf + Lamb to worldwide acclaim and they’re New Rhythm EP drops in the next couple months (complete with Soul Clap remix . They do a dope live said and obviously from this mix can DJ like nobody’s business too. Get to swimming friends

The first time I met Nathaniel Jay was after the AirDrop/Dirty Bird party when I ended up taging with him at his apt until like noon. We immediately were on the same vibe and when he told me he called his crew/parties “Pitch It Down” I was totally sold. Since then we’ve partied with Nat a bunch of times in New York and I have to say he’s one of the craziest cats I know, plus he’s got a super hot girlfriend (who he named the mix after, so cute). But regardless of all that, this dude has impeccable taste in house music and knows how to keep it slow and sexy like few others I’ve heard. Get down to this shit for the summer yo!

Last Saturday was the party to end all parties at The Marcy Hotel in Brooklyn, NY.  The official line-up Lee Foss, Zev, Gadi, Le Loup, Jamie Jones & Mr Damian Lazarus.   By the time 11a or 12p came around we were asked to play.  It was both a tremendous honor and the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime

You know, no joke intended, it takes a lot of BALLS to step forward as a female DJ in boy dominated Boston.  There’s ego, testosterone, jealousy, no joke sometimes it can get really hairy, but our girl D-Lux, aka Laura Deluca, has proven time and time again that dance music is about a hell of a lot more than bromance!

D-Lux, a DJ who is continually refining her sound can be described as deep, drummy, tastefully techno and vocal with the appropriate feminine touch.   Her super tight mixing skills behind the decks, honest humble attitude and open mindedness to new sounds make her an irresistible crowd pleaser.  Catch D-Lux as she opens up the Dancing On The Charles 2009 season on Saturday, June 20th in Cambridge, MA.

Take for example a few months back when we PROUDLY presented the extraordinary talents of the young producer/live performer Nicholas Jaar. At only 19 years old (a FRESHMAN at Brown University) this young French transplant and musical prodigy has created quite a stir with releases for the likes of Wolf + Lamb and AirDrop Records and now on his own imprint, Clown and Sunset.

I’ve always been a bit iffy about Ableton sets, quite often it seems like the energy just isnt there. Nicolas Jaar’s performance however, is quite the contrary, his music weaves together like the gils of a french accordion, taking us all over the musical spectrum, way beyond simply DANCE music. Melodies, moods, emotions, seems like sky’s the limit for young Nico.

Just a few more tidbits: Seth Troxler’s remix of Nicolas Jaar “The Student” was the flipside to the recent deep bomb “Aphrika EP” that seems to be getting canned everywhere. Don’t sleep just cuz it doesn’t feature The Angelizer. Also, Nico is in cahoots with fellow Parisian Le Loup (performing at Midweek Techno June 3rd), who has also just released digitally the “See Line Ep” on Wolf + Lamb, again with a remix of “The Student” and another titled “Nico’s Bath Dance” which I imagine was created by both of these two yoots.

Ah yes, what a proud moment indeed! How often is it that Boston gets proper love on Resident Advisor? Very rarely. And how often is it that TWO roommates (Cnyce and the great Tanner Ross) receive nearly back-to-back features on the same day?? Dude, like NEVAH kid!

Anyways, mega props to Tanner Ross and James aka Killowatts for their hard work on the long awaited Voodeux album titled The Paranormal slated for release in July on Claude Von Stroke’s Mothership label, and big up the Soul Clap massive because the legacy of the “Love Light” and “Conscious” edits on due out in June on Wolf + Lamb Black just keeps on living!

MK, born Marc Kinchen, is one of our heroes. Born in Detroit, but later embracing elements of the New York garage sound, he’s one of the true innovators of the dub dance mix, a style made most famous on his “Dub Of Doom” mix of Nightcrawlers’ “Push The Feeling”.  Fast forward to the present and with the near death of major label pop remixes the true dub mix has become a lost art. So, what better time for a return of the King Of The Dub and what better place than at Detroit Electronic Music Festival (Movement 2009) where he will be premiering his new 4 turntable plus sampler set with his brother Scotti Deep. I had the honor of catching up with the man himself from his L.A. digs as he prepares for his upcoming return to dance music.

How’d you get involved with techno?
Basically, I started in Detroit when I was 16. I had started doing music when I was in 8th grade and then I met a guy named Terrence Parker through a friend of mine and he did techno music. I didn’t know about techno music then, but he saw I had gear and he’s like “you wanna make a record together”. So we made our first release as Separate Minds and it came out on a little independent label called Express Records and got a pretty good buzz. When that came out Kevin Saunderson heard it and got in touch with me to license the song for [his label] KMS.

That’s so funny, I just got a copy of that compilation the other day.
Yeah, that was big for us, but most important, that’s when I met Kevin and from that point I became Kevin’s protégé.

What did you use to make those legendary basslines?
I always sequenced on computers. I think I was using an Atari ST. Then I had a 909 and a sampler and for synths I would just use what Kevin had. He had like every synth in his studio, but always I tried to stay simple, I just winged it with like one or two synth parts. But, alot of my bass sounds were samples. I would sample a bass sound that then assign it to a keyboard. I’ve never really been like stuck to one type of synth or a couple types of synths. Other then bass, sampling was really just for vocals, but I probably used the same bass sample for about 5 years.

For me your dubs are the most influential, but you also had a bunch of hit vocal tracks, what differs in your approach to a vocal vs. a dub?
I’ve always thought I had a good ear for vocals, but sometimes on some of the dance stuff the vocals were hard to work with. Most of the time if I had a vocal track that I didn’t like the vocals too, that’s when I would do a dub. As far as when I’m doing [original] vocals, it depends on the type of sound I’m looking for. The MK with Alana stuff like Burning was more a strategic approach. Now, vocally, when I approach something I go on a vibe, but now a days I use better singers.

What’s the dude saying on the Nightcrawlers jam?
Uh-and-a-night-again-uh-and-a-night-so-pull-it. But seriously, I got commissioned to do a mix [of that song], I did the mix, and they didn’t like it. I was living in New York and my manger called me and said they didn’t like it, but I was about to go catch a flight to Detroit. At that time one of my speakers was blown and my [mixing] board was on the floor, not even set up. My studio was a mess. I was kinda mad that they didn’t like it, so I did [a new] one real quick, in like 30 minutes. I didn’t like the vocals so I just cut it up. Everything I did was a first pass, from the horns to the keys to the sample. Plus, I was working out of only one speaker. I just did the mix sent it to my manager and I was out. I get back to New York a week later and I listened to the mix and I got goose bumps. Then I played it for my brother [Scotti Deep] and he was like damn.

Wow, 30 minutes, for one of the biggest dance songs of all time? Crazy!
I try to take that approach when I do dance stuff. I don’t put alot of thought in to my dance stuff. It’s more just a feeling, so I just go for it and hopefully it ends up working for whatever reason.

Why’d you step away from dance music?
I was doing a mix a week for like 15-20 grand so money wasn’t the issue. The issue became, am I just gunna remix my whole life? Cause at the time remixing was a relatively new thing and so was producing, I didn’t know about the longevity, so I was like I need to do original production. You hear about producers and artist that are living off of royalties later on in life. I kinda just stopped doing remixes and I went into production. I hooked up with Quincy Jones and that led to working with 702, Snoop, SWV, Jay-Z, E-40 and everybody else.

So why the return to dance music?
That was fine and [dance music] was in the beginning stages of dying down anyway. [Today] with the way the industry is right now, it’s not good right now. I feel like if your gunna do it now, just do it for the art. So it felt like a good time to get back into it. What I’m doing is trying to do some stuff a little different, I’m going to put out a new MK record vinyl only, no digital.

When’s it coming out? What does it sound like?
It will be done before Detroit and will probably be out in June. One of the tracks is called “Dance With Me”. [The sound] is kind of a return to before. I’ve been doing stuff over the last year to see what style works for me. My old sound still works, with a little harder drums but still the dub stuff. I like the dub sound of vocal pieces. I’m also gunna be DJing more over the next year or two. My brother [Scotti Deep] and I are gunna start touring around.

You’re gunna be playing with Scotti at Movement. What’s that gunna sound like? Is this the world premier?
Well, it’s a 4 turntable thing plus a sampler so I can do like dubs on the fly kinda thing. Almost like a live meets DJ thing. We DJed together like tag-team in London a couple months back, but Detroit is the permier of the keyboard and 4 deck thing.

What other new sounds are you into?
It’s the same as it’s always been for me. I never listen to anything by name. Maybe, just Masters At Work and Todd [Terry] back in the day. I wont even ask the name of it, I just listen and “yeah its dope”. I’ve also always really liked Mike Dunn.

Any last words?

Deshaies is a New England DJ hero and one of Boston’s pioneers of the San Fran/Chicago house sound that swept the late 90’s and early 2000’s. His crew, the ever so rave-a-ly named Marz Entertainment, launched in the mid 90’s and ran for over a decade at the top of the local dance music scene and his Sunday night party at the Phoenix Landing called Bump, with resident DJs Randy, Sergio Santos and Ryan Obermiller was responsible for countless DJ sets from the likes of Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Heather, Colette, DJ Sneak, Diz, Justin Martin and many others.

From his residency (alongside Armand Van Helden) at Boston’s legendary Loft club in the early 90’s, to running Biscuithead Records, to his long-standing deep house party, Utopia Sundays, Bruno has been one of the guiding forces in the growth and health of the house scene (DJs, dancers, producers, promoters) in our little city for almost 2 decades.
