After a long time without drawing I'm back. I recently received a commission for a man playing soccer. Here is the three step process I used. First I penciled the drawing, then I added some color pencil details, last is the finished airbrushed piece.

One the things I like about working with Caricature Connection is that guest sometimes ask you for things that are not "in the book" like this kid who wanted to be drawn riding Space Mountain with his weimaraner. At first I was a little intimidated with the request, but once I got into it, I rather enjoyed figuring out how to make it seem like he was riding Space Mountain, which is really dark, with out making the whole background black.

The second one is from "the book", but I liked drawing this girl. She had a fun face.

My first Caricature Connection post

So after Edward's arts lost the contract in Citywalk. I needed a place to finish off the summer. They wouldn't take me back at Universal (long story), but thank God I found Caricature Connection. It's a different style of doing caricatures than I'm accustomed to. I have to draw body situations. There is a book where the customer can choose what they want to be doing, but we don't have to copy it. We are free to interpret they situation in our own way. Here are some examples of a few situations from the book as interpreted by me in my first month at Caricature Connection.

This one is from the first week or two. The girl's name is Zoe, which happens to be our dog's name so I drew our Zoey into the picture. I didn't tell the little girl that she has the same name as our doggy though.

This one is from my first day at Animal Kingdom. The girl wanted to be drawn as "Jungle Girl". Note the Tex Avery inspired lion.

This is the same pose and situation as the first one above (Roller Blading), but this girl was older so I caricatured the body too.

This last one is from today. Mermaids are one of the most requested and also one of my favorites to draw because it lets me have fun with the supporting animal cast. I prefer the mermaid on the rocks.

We've been in Orlando trying to work, but not having much success. At least we have been drawing more than we did in L.A.

Ellen in Airbrush. This one brought us a little bit extra business when they were filming a couple of episodes of the "Ellen Show" at citywalk.

My lovely wife... Believe it or not she requested that I push the exaggeration. It's one of the many wonderful things about being married to her.

Despite what ever problems she has in her personal life. Amy Winehouse has some cool music. I didn't listen to her for a long time, because I thought it was all hype, but when I heard her rendition of "Cupid", I was hooked. Now she's one of my favorite singer/artists of all time.

Tomorrow is fight night. I wish I could watch. Since I can't here's sketches of some MMA rumbles. When I sit down and watch the fights I usually try to sketch for practice. It's great for actions, as well as interaction between two figures.

Most cartoon shows now are horrible. The only two modern cartoons I can watch right now are Spongebob and The Misadventures of Flapjack. It's eye candy and it's funny. So I did a couple of little fan art sketches of the boy.

Masha and I watch allot of reality contests and we watch allot of food shows. One of my favorites this past season was "Chef Academy". Chef Jean Christophe Novelli tries to make chefs out of his students. I guess he's pretty famous in the UK and he's got 2 michellin stars and he makes some cool looking food.

Still posting drawings from 2009. This one is of Taylor Swift. Done in ink, watercolor, and glitter. You can't really appreciate the glitter from this scan or color for that matter. I've yet to figure out how to make color scans look good.

My 50th post is coming out of Russia. This weekend was busy, as I not only painted a caricature for Sergey and Masha's wedding, but I also drew live at their reception. It was a fun, interesting, and tiring event. I enjoy weddings, and hope to do more events like this, either in Russia or the U.S.A. or anywhere!

I Just spent hours reading posts about Emily the Strange character being ripped off from a character from a children's book. Read about it here...

To me, this is serious. I highly value originality. I struggle with it myself and sometimes I don't produce anything because I don't want to be derivative. So I look down upon artist who "borrow" from others who have suffered to spark the fire of a good idea. Reading about this issue has inspired me to from now on strive to create truly original art. I only want to use photos to study, but not copy and If one of my ideas is similar too to someone else's, then I won't use that idea.

No more using single photo references for caricatures either. I believe this will only improve my creativity and add a new dimension to my caricatures. Static samples derived from single photo is so boring anyway.

So you shouldn't see more of those samples like the ones below. Caricatures from photographs will only be done for customer commissioned pieces, and even then I will add my own twist as to not make it a copy of a photo.

Perhaps this concept will even creep into other sphere of my life. Hopefully it will.
