Today, Nov. 2,  is the last day to impact the health care bill which will be taken up by Congress. The Kucinich Amendment, which protects the right of states to pursue single payer health care initiatives, was stripped from the legislation. The only way to reinstate it is for it to be included in a Manager’s Amendment which will be completed this evening.

Today is the last day to demand that the Kucinich Amendment to protect state single payer initiatives be put back in the Health Care bill (H.R. 676). Ask your Representatives to put the Kucinich Amendment back in the bill. It has already been approved by the Education and Labor Committee in a bipartisan vote.

Why We Do Not Have Health Care for All

For nearly one hundred years, beginning with President Teddy Roosevelt in 1912, universal, not for profit health care has been proposed to meet the social and economic needs of all the American people. Yet today forty seven million Americans are uninsured and another fifty million Americans are underinsured.
—Why?
In America today health care is a privilege, based on ability to pay. If you cannot pay, you do not have the privilege, you may get emergency room care, but that’s it. Long term, your life is shorter. If you have health insurance, premiums, co- pays and deductibles may be cause financial ruin. At least 60% of all bankruptcies in America are due to people not having enough money to pay for hospital bills.
—Why Don’t We Have Health Care for All?
Health Insurance Companies are investment companies. They make money when people purchase policies. They also make money by refusing to pay claims. In a recent study by the California Nurses Association, insurance companies denied 28% of claims. This means the people who bought the insurance had to pay the very claims they thought they were insured against. As investment companies insurance companies have an obligation to shareholders to make the most profit, to get the highest rate of return. That is why they have to make money by not providing health care. One of every three dollars in our health care system, $800 billion a year goes for the for-profit system, for corporate profits, stock options, executive salaries, advertising, marketing and the cost of paper work. The insurance companies, and their Wall Street partners, do not want to change this arrangement.
—Can We Change the System?
Yes. But first we have to understand the influence that insurance companies have on our political process. They make large contributions to both political parties, to committee chairs and to individual members. Why? To protect the status quo, to make sure there are very few changes which interrupt their profits. That is why most proposals coming out of Washington today are weak, because most are written with an eye to the concerns of insurance companies.
—Is There Any Way Out of This Mess?
Yes, it is HR676, a universal, single payer, not for profit health care system, which is supported by 85 members of congress, and hundreds of other organizations made up of students, nurses, doctors, seniors and workers. It provides for all health care needs, doctor of choice, plus vision care, dental care, mental health, prescription drugs and long term care. We are already paying for a universal standard of care; we are just not getting it. We need to work together in making HR676 a reality. We cannot wait another 100 years.

Man walks by with a machine gun, casually dressed in slightly military attire. I’m at the airport to see some friends off, back to Peru. He walks by, smiling, beautiful in the fulfillment of his “mission”. People are smoking in front of the terminal. People are noticing, but hiding their noticing. I hear comments ringing inside all of our heads, “just like in other countries”, “wow this is what we have come to”. I sit quietly in the uncanny casualness of the moment. I appreciated him, at least for the fact that he projected, not an air of fear, but calmness. Best you can do in a situation like that. Even though he has been slotted into this job of “casual machine gun bearer” he did not misuse it. He was good with his energy — so good some people didn’t even see him.

Still it’s surreal that this is what we’ve come to, this is what the world has come to or probably has been like for some time.

We’re not all money-hungry people, mindless to our own impact, careless towards others. In fact most of us would be in the category of caring about other people, the environment, living in compassion, wanting happiness for ourselves and others. Most of us live there, not in the mind of the machine. There are more of us, than “them”. Them being the ones that feel disconnected. The ones that have been “taken over” and lost their humanity. Some are rich, some are poor — they don’t know themselves at all. Some kind of strangle hold on consciousness?

The Elders that I have had the honor to hear, Mayan, Hopi, Inka, Lakota, Tibetan, Cherokee, and others all say in one way or another that what is happening is “a coming together”. Come Together. In fact that IS the doorway. An understanding of the how forces of dissonance can effect us all. How to move beyond it. That’s what we are doing.

As a result of Peltier’s recent parole denial, BEN CARNES, Choctaw Nation, and a Sun Dance Chief, states he will go to Washington, D.C. to stand and fast in front of the White House between September 5th – 12th, in hopes of securing a meeting with President Obama.

Leonard Peltier has been an international symbol of American injustice based upon critical questions surrounding his conviction in 1977 in the deaths of two FBI agents. Amnesty International has designated Peltier as a political prisoner and a U.S. prosecutor has admitted in court during an appeal hearing that he did not know who killed the agents and cannot prove who did. A federal judge who heard this statement was unable to afford any relief wrote a letter to Sen. Inouye to ask the president to grant clemency.

There will be a prayer gathering at 6pm on Saturday the 12th for Leonard Peltier and Ben Carnes (during his fast to bring awareness to Pres. Obama about Peltier’s injustice). People may bring small items for the vigil, which will include artwork and gifts. We would like to get these to Peltier’s family.

Let’s give us all a pat on the back and remember that doing  a job for $ alone is not a job worth doing – because if your heart is not in it — It is NOT WHERE YOU SHOULD BE. Right. It’s pretty simple.
Not that easy it can seem but in the end it is a better road. It is the road you always take sooner or later. Why not now? You never want to say, “it’s just my job.” Cause then you are quite dangerously close to being checked out, not there, robotsville.
If you can’t move on from something like this right away at least pursue your dreams along the way. At least a little bit.

Don’t get me wrong nothing is more exciting than working. Working, or shall we say creating, what you love. For then the good feeling is attached to what you are putting out to the universe. You can at least have a good feeling (do the best you can) while at a job you don’t like . . . for a while anyway.

Take the day off and smile. Open up a window. You are in the hands of the Universe.

Sometimes real feelings are the guideposts that pop up first when a change is at hand. There is a point, I think, once you are in the flow of creation, and not obstructing it with your own thoughts, that you move beyond feeling (at least the random, crazy, destructive kind of feelings) and move into a different state of being.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s, my generation is the first generation who grew up with total saturation by television. Advertising aimed at kids was just beginning. We have no idea how deep it goes, how our minds and hearts may have been unconsciously sanctioned off by absorbing these messages from big business served up in bit size portions for us to build our reality upon. Starting to dig through these perceptions that are embedded in us is kinda like a Babushka doll, where you see one doll then you look inside and there is another one and another one. A couple days ago we got hit by another one of those crazy waves in Los Angeles. Everyone I spoke with had something going on. Seems like we are moving ever closer to the speed of light and this is what it can feel like. Like you are bombarded and about ready to split in 2 (or more). Try gathering that crazy energy and focusing it in a positive manner for the world. It does help you get through it. And just like all the other waves that have come, there is the reward, the insight, the evolution, on the other side of it.
