Capturing those unforgettable picture-perfect moments make every photograph a gem of treasure to keep. It reminds one of the event and people whom you shared that moment with. I’m fond of taking photographs and immediately share them on my social media accounts such as Facebook and Instagram. Aside from being a wedding events place and a hub for special occasion, it has different theme-based venues that can accommodate the creativity of both the bride and the groom in creating their ‘dream wedding.’ If you want a feel of the past, there’s Old Manila Intramuros-like themed spot for you complete with all those lovely trellises and cobblestones. If you want a simple wedding ceremony, there’s Estacion—a flat garden where you can have a set up of chairs and the works. For Kiddie parties, there’s Boat Themed Garden which I’m pretty sure the kids will love. With its three hectares garden compound, there’s a plethora of options for you to choose from, depending on your style and creativity.

The Sevilla, the open air pavilion, the Filipiniana Open air pavilion, the Terazza are all perfect for an elegant setting. The al fresco garden has vast spaces that can accommodate any gathering with a long guest list. So regardless if you want your events to be outdoor or indoor, Jardin de Miramar is perfect for you.

Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite: A Must-Visit Historical Place for Every Filipino

I'm sure that the mere mention of Kawit Cavite instantly reminds one of the renowned Aguinaldo Shrine--where the First Philippine Republic took place and it's where they first waved the Philippine flag and sang our national anthem. It could also mean as the birthplace of the late Philippine President and General Emilio Aguinaldo. I used to just see them either in post cards, textbooks or in the old five-peso bill but I had never set foot in Kawit, Cavite until last year, December 30, 2014 to be exact.

I had just been invited to cover Kawit's annual Pamaskong Aguinaldo event organized by Kawit Inc. and the city government. Part of the visit was the chance to tour the Aguinaldo Shrine. Touring the late General's house had given me a glimpse of the past--on how he had lived his life and how much he truly loved his country. I had learned so much about the Philippine history that afternoon. Seeing Gen. Aguinaldo's house is like getting to know him up close and personal or perceiving him in ways other people may not have known. His home speaks patriotism. You'll see it from the Philippine flags that adorned the poles of his house, the decors on the walls, even as you look up to the ceiling (their main dining room's ceiling had the Philippine map) or you look down on the spacious old wooden floor. He had designed a home that reflects his personality. Aguinaldo Shrine had lots of secret passages (one leading to his room), dual purpose decorative table, and it has a very unique architectural style. Looking from the outside, one would think it's only four or five storey. But Aguinaldo Shrine actually had seven floors + an attic. The structure is very clever, very shrewdly made. The late general is indeed a genius on his own.

Did you know that the late President of the First Philippine Republic, General Emilio Aguinaldo had his own bowling lanes and 10-feet swimming pool at his home? The old ancestral house of the Aguinaldos was indeed grand. It had the late General's medicine cabinet along with his used medicines intact. There was even a "loveseat" and a beautifully decorated "spit bowl". We were dumbfounded by all the sightings we've had. They also own a special compartment where they kept dry ice from the USA until they were able to acquire one of the very firsts 'General Electric' refrigerators in the country. Plus the Aguinaldos also own a manual washing machine using bamboo and a huge machine like structure.

I was so amazed at the old house that it had stood the test of time despite being made of entirely of hard wood. The tour guide even said that it is indeed the Aguinaldo Shrine that's the most expensive and e most difficult to maintain. According to the tour guide (who was a close friend of the late general himself), unlike in other shrines or museums, every little piece at Aguinaldo Shrine are still original--there's no need for restoration yet.

Everything from the said shrine depicts the late general's patriotism. The late general also had a dungeon-like underground tunnel where one has to crawl to reach the town church in five to ten minutes. Unfortunately, it's the only thing that the shrine still needs a lot of money to restore and as of this time, it's not yet open to the public.

Visiting the Aguinaldo Shrine is likened to opening a historical book. The quaint town of Kawit in Cavite allows one to travel back in time and discover interesting trivia in the Philippine History + gives one a chance to get to know how the late general lived his life.

My Manila Hotel Tour: A Glimpse of History

I have always marveled at Manila Hotel's magnificent lobby. As a young child, I am fascinated with its grand chandelier because it made me feel like a real princess dancing with her prince under such sparkling bright lights. I had no idea that several decades later, as a young adult, I'd still find myself in awe by the beauty and grandeur of Manila Hotel's ante-lobby. I guess one could call it serendipity that I had been invited to tour the hotel recently.

A visit to Manila Hotel transports you back in time. Built on July 1912 in the heart of what used to be the Philippines' central business district--Manila--Manila Hotel opened its doors to the most influential people of the time, from the Ilustrados to high-ranking government officials.The hotel's main building boasts of five floors while the tower suite is 18 storey high with further plans of expansion in the offing. With 102 years of service in the hotel and tourism industry, Manila Hotel continues to celebrate history with their best personalized service and giving guests priceless memories. This is what sets the Grand Dame apart from all the other five star hotels that have sprouted in the last century--they offer not just a typical hotel but for their guests to experience and have a glimpse of the Philippine history. Not every hotel can do just that.

Walking through the halls of Manila Hotel alone gives you a nostalgic ambiance. Imagine that you're walking on the very same venue where the prominent people of our history used to frequent. The alta de sociedad (elite society) and those who were well off in the olden times had actually partied in the rooms and maybe celebrated important occasions there. Each and every nook and cranny of Manila Hotel speaks of elegance and a great sense of history. This is what sets The Grand Dame (a monicker of Manila Hotel) apart from other modernized hotels that we now have. Checking in to Manila Hotel is tantamount to experiencing a glimpse of Philippine history.

The Champagne Room alone is a sight to behold. The glass panel is bullet proof because it is the past Philippine presidents and other government officials would hold events, dinner and other private functions. The vintage glass trees gives the room an edge because they're still original, nevertheless untouched from what the Champagne Room used to be. Meanwhile the tasseled lamps add a romantic ambiance to the place which makes it perfect for intimate dates. The Roxas Room at Manila Hotel according to the guide also used to be bullet proof too.

We were able to visit the Honeymoon Suite, and I'd have to say I was surprised to find it a room a whole lot bigger than what I had expected it to be--a spiral staircase, two sets of sofa can be found on the upper (TV room) and lower area (receiving area) of the said suite--huge enough to accommodate not only the newly weds but also including their guests prior to the wedding day. The said suite had two toilets, a bath tub and and enclosed shower as well. But here's the best part of the suite: it has an amazing view of the splendid view of Manila's skyline at night from the second floor which is simply breathtaking.

But throughout the tour itself what interests me most is the part where we visited General Douglas MacArthur's Suite. Well, who wouldn't have known the man famous for his own words, "I Shall Return"? It felt really nice to know a little trivia or two about how the General lived in the Philippines during their time. I think it also helped that I was able to visit his close friend, former Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon's Heritage House (which I have featured on this blog quite recently) to further understand the friendship that transpired between them. For someone who had only seen those two historical figures (the President and the General) on textbooks alone, it's refreshing to learn that they aren't just product of fiction or any fabricated story, but they were real people. I strongly suggest that the youngsters of today should try joining the My Manila Hotel tour so that they'd be able to learn something more interesting apart from the ones they only read on books.

In fact, although the General's suite mostly had items made of replica, it is now only 1/3 of its original, there were two items which remained original, two chairs to be specific who were mere witness to the life of the famed General Douglas MacArthur. There was even his hat as well as old photographs of him, his family (wife and son Arthur MacArthur as a child) and his dear friend, former Philippine president Manuel Quezon. If those walls could only speak for themselves, they could tell us more how the General has lived his life.

We also made a stop to Mabuhay Palace where the wall panels were said to be imported from China and that they were made from jade. They looked pretty sophisticated and they tell the story of Chinese famous philosopher, Confucius. The canopies were made of bamboo to somehow give some balance and harmony in feng shui. The place is a good venue for special occasions such as wedding and baptismal receptions, family reunions etc. I was able to eat at Manila Hotel's Mabuhay Palace once during their celebration of the recent Chinese New Year but they highly recommend their salted egg ice cream found only at Mabuhay Palace.

Apart from Mabuhay Palace, we also dropped by the posh Cafe Ilang-Ilang. There was an array of sumptuous and delectable buffet choices as well as highlights of international cuisines such as Japanese, Mediterranean, Indian, Thai, Italian, Spanish and many others. There was even a fun activity where volunteers were asked to help the Chefs in putting their preferred toppings on their D-I-Y pizzas. Before the Manila Hotel Tour was over, we were lead to an upper deck behind the swimming pool where one could catch the famous Manila Bay sunset! It's such a romantic place by the sea where we devoured on pizzas made by our co-bloggers. With the sun setting as a backdrop, it was a perfect way to capped our My Manila Hotel Tour.

According to Ms. Denise of Manila Hotel, they are now working on a special app using augmented reality where upon entering a specific room or place within Manila Hotel, using that special app would make you see the things what has happened or transpired in that specific place in history. It's like making your own My Manila Hotel Tour--at your own pace and time. It'll be an exciting adventure and another reason for you to come and visit Manila Hotel anytime soon.

The Quezon Heritage House: A Place of Refuge and Comfort

I have a confession to make: I do not know much about the late President Manuel Quezon--aside from seeing him on a twenty peso bill, knowing it was during his time that Commonwealth law had been implemented and that it was after him that the city where I live got its name. Apart from those I've mentioned, I knew very little about this guy most commonly known as Don Manuel. I recently went to the Quezon Memorial Circle and found out there's something new in there that's worth checking out for--especially those who want to find out more about the late Philippine President Manuel Quezon. The newly built Quezon Heritage House speaks more about the great president's character as well as that of his family.

The Quezon family once lived in a house originally located in Gilmore Street, New Manila. The ancestral house stood as mere witness to the trying times of the late President and the resilience of his family after his passing. It is the only house associated with the Quezon clan, a testament to the bygone era so inextricably entwined with the birth of an independent nation. The Quezon City local government unit heads together with the descendants of President Quezon had put on all their efforts to rebuilt and transferred the original house to the newly constructed Quezon Heritage House found in the heart of Quezon Memorial Circle. From the huge doors, the bed linens, the good 'ol treasure trove or what we Filipinos call "baul" or treasure trove, bathroom tiles, all the way to the wooden floorings--they were all original--they were builtin each and every piece, just like a puzzle to make sure that the Quezon Heritage House will look exactly as it was in its original location. Of course, there had been some changes among the items that can no longer be retrieved such as the jalousie window that was damaged, as well as the images of Jesus and Our Lady of Miraculous Medal which the Quezon family decided to keep (so guests can only see photos of the said images instead of the real thing).

Coming to the Quezon Heritage House is like going to your grandparents' house in the province. But it feels like getting to know Don Manuel and his wife Dona Aurora for the first time. It gives one a taste of history, an idea how the First family lived and in the process learn bits and pieces of the Quezon family's secrets. Did you know that President Manuel Quezon married his own cousin? Yes, you read that right. Dona Aurora and Don Manuel were cousins. Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon was not only the country's first lady but she was also the Philippine National Red Cross' founder. She was a key leader during her time.

President Manuel Quezon's so-called Achilles' heel was his being a chain smoker, thus he later developed tuberculosis. Thus, when you come and visit the Quezon Heritage house, you'll find two rooms with a common rest room: one for Don Manuel and the other for Dona Aurora. The Quezon Heritage House also shared the late president's favorite recipe called Cocido Espanol--a heirloom chicken recipe which every guest can actually try to cook at home since the Quezon Heritage House had the special recipe posted on the walls (in English and Filipino).

There were so many things I've learned about the great man where my city got its name. The late president Quezon isn't no longer just someone I see on my twenty peso bill. He became real to me more than ever after visiting an imitation of his original ancestral home. He's like a "lolo" to me. I feel proud to live in a place named after the great man that he is.

Come and visit, former Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon's Heritage house located at the Quezon Memorial Circle. Yes, just a stone's throw away from his final resting place--The Quezon Tower (that symbolizes Birth, Life and Death) at the heart of the Quezon Memorial Circle. At this time, entrance to the Quezon Heritage House is still FREE. But according to the tour guide, the management are still thinking if they'd be asking for a fee in the future for house's maintenance.

Revisiting Residence Inn in Tagaytay

If you've noticed, the Philippines had been experiencing cold weather lately due to polar vortex in other parts of the globe. If you're like most Filipinos who's a sucker for cold climate, you'd surely be rejoicing by this time since seldom do we experience such kind of climate since the country is a tropical one. Most of us would either go to Baguio City, but for the ones who do not like to travel that far, Tagaytay is the best option. After all, Tagaytay is just a few hours away from Manila. Known for its scenic sights and fresh produce, Tagaytay is also home to Residence Inn.

I've been to Residence Inn a couple of times. The first time was when we had our field trip in my junior year in high school. I remember how much we had fun. Then, it also became a witness to one love story--my ex boyfriend and I once dated at the Residence Inn. So to be honest, there have been a whole lot of memories brought back to me when I revisited Residence Inn again after a long time. I wasn't surprised to see a lot of changes and improvements throughout the place.

Exotic animals, birds, and serpents will be meeting you at Residence Inn. You can have your pictures taken with a friendly cockatoo, an awesome white owl like Harry Potter's Hedwig, an iguana or if you're brave enough, even with a serpent should you wish. There's no need to fear though as all these animals are trained by Residence Inn animal trainers to interact and welcome Residence Inn's guests and visitors.

Kids will also be amazed with different animals' tricks during the special show where equally talented Residence Inn staff showcase their singing,dancing and even acting abilities. At the end of every show, guests can also interact with the different animals featured during the said show.

For the more adventurous ones who like to fuel up their hunger for something extreme, they can try the zipline and cable car at Residence Inn. A breathtaking and scenic view filled with verdant field on a hill and the beauty of Taal Volcano and Taal Lake awaits you when you take the zipline. While you're up there, don't forget to smile on your right side, someone's taking your photo--say "Cheese!" You may claim your picture later for a minimal fee and take home a printed copy as a keepsake or a little souvenir of your Residence Inn zipline adventure.

Paradizoo: Power of Three-Festival Bloom of Agriculture

Mendez in Cavite may not be your usual go-to destination for families in need of some good R and R. Exploring Zoobic Safari at Night: One Unforgettable Night Safari Experience

When one mentions the word 'travel', the first thing that comes to mind is 'excitement'. It was an invitation hard for anyone to refuse. To do so would mean being killed joy--sometimes it is a healthy thing to indulge in life's simple pleasures--that of traveling and giving in to your adrenaline rush. Besides I had never set foot on Zoobic Safari. It was my first time to visit. Although I had always heard of Zoobic Safari from friends where they had memorable and fun experiences, I never had the time to actually go, until this invite came along. I decided to grab the opportunity, after all, we just had a long weekend vacation from work. So I jumped at the chance to experience Zoobic Safari, only this time, it is a tour of the Zoobic Safari at night time. Somewhat similar to Singapore's Night Safari. This night trip makes it more exciting.

Zoobic Safari is a very family-friendly destination to visit. Children will surely enjoy seeing all kinds of animals in facilities that a very well maintained and somehow close to each animals' natural habitat. It's fun to see the animals up close and personal from the ones you only get to see on books.

I did not expect that food at Zoobic Safari's Buhi Grill would be so good. It made a good first impression on them. We had a choice of Chicken Inasal/Barbecue with steamed rice or Liempo/Grilled Pork Strips with rice for dinner. These meals were served with a hot soup. Our meals were served by a cute looking guy named Argee (more on him later). I loved the fact that Zoobic Safari's Buhi Grill has free wifi access to guests. It meant I could easily upload photos on Instagram, Twitter and update my friends on Facebook about my experiences and stuff.

After dinner, we were whisked to ride a train that would bring us to Serpentarium to see different kinds of snakes, followed by a walking trip to the Forbidden Forest. Since it was dark, I had to admit, it was a bit creepy to enter the cave. But our tour guide had assured me that I'll be safe and fine. Inside the cave, we saw animals endemic to the country which Zoobic Safari tries to give a hand to save them from becoming extinct.

Wear comfortable footwear when you come and visit Zoobic Safari. And be ready to take the treks and trails as well. The walking nigh safari tour takes about an hour, with witty and well-informed guides spouting off facts that will keep your mind off the enveloping darkness.

You don't have to spend a lot to make the trip memorable. Just remember: what's important is that you are together as family/ friends, enjoying the night chilling out on a zoo tour. Not only do you get to reminisce your field trips back when you were in school, but you can also have a good time enjoying while learning new things as you go along the Zoobic Night Safari Tour.

Everything is interactive and enjoyable so it is something that anybody at any age can appreciate. Do not forget to catch the Night Safari Show as well. I was surprised to enjoy the said show.

This trip has to be one of the best Zoo I've ever been to. There is so much to Zoobic Safari has to offer and despite all wonderful activities we did, there is still so much more to do and see here. There is no doubt in my mind that I'm heading straight to Zoobic Safari again when I visit Zambales again.

My Zoocobia Experience

Having a great time doesn't necessarily mean spending a great deal of money. Going to the zoo is an inexpensive trip that is both educational and entertaining for children of all ages. My adopted son Kyle and I recently visited two of the different fun zoo theme parks owned by the Zoomanity Group.

It was the first time that Kyle and I had set foot in Zoocobia Fun Zoo. And they do live up to their name--I had not realized how fun it is to visit a zoo until I came here. For one, Zoocobia isn't your ordinary zoo. Zoocobia totally spells F-U-N! There will surely be something for the whole family to enjoy- regardless of your age. Yes, there are lots of other activities that you and your family can do at Zoocobia.

Getting to Zoocobia is a little bit tricky, the road is rough with some twists here and there because it is located inside the Paradise Ranch which is on the far end of the somewhat hilly slope. But I can assure you, once you and your family get there, it will be all worth the trip.

Zoocobia houses an Animal Bone and Skin Museum where your little one can start his interest to become a future archeologist without digging for bones. Here, one can find a large black bear, Siberian tiger skin, Ostrich's eggs and bones, Palawan squirrel, pot bellied pig, mouse deer, civet cat, black ape etc. Zoocobia's Zoocology Museum had skin animals that offer extensive information and interactive activities for the young and old. Animal lovers and activists need not to worry though, because no animals were killed or harmed for the purpose of the said exhibit. In fact, it was made in honor of Zoomanity Group's chairperson Ms. Nita Laurel Yupangco for her unwavering support in the conservation and awareness of the country's biodiversity.

For live animals, there is the Birds Of Thrill where one could feed birds inside the aviary. Kyle even had a chance to feed love birds in different colors. We also had the chance to see other kinds of birds such as serpent eagle from South Asia, Rufous hornbill, Sun Conure from Brazil, and the Philippine Scops Owl.

Those looking for some wild animals, there is a serpentarium which houses a few snakes. But kids will surely be delighted to know that they can feed banana slices to the buttered popcorn smelling animals, the Palawan bear cats. They looked so cute that I wish I could bring them home as pets. According to the tour guide, they originally eat cherries and fruits, so banana slices will suffice.

You could feed more animals for a minimal fee at The Barn. Here, there are camels, miniature horses, goats, pot bellied pigs and other animals. It was fun to treat a child to an entire day filled with ostriches, horses, goats, birds. For small kids or pre-schoolers, I suggest you to bring along a small book about animals to let him see while you're still on the road to further acquaint your child with the creatures he sees later at Zoocobia. Interesting tidbits, such as monkeys' habit of peeling bananas before eating them, will help your child retain more information.

A trip to Zoocobia isn't just all about animals though. There are other attractions like the Garden Maze. We had fun with the garden maze as a group where you had to go through plants and flowers to find your way out the maze.

There is also the Giant Fun Slide where kids and those kids at heart can slide to their hearts' content. Fee is about Php50 (per 3 slides) and Php20 (per slide).

But what probably made our adrenalin rush was the Zooc Ride. It was some slipper-looking car that the rider has to ride going down the hilly slopes using acceleration of gravity to make the said cars move and go down. A rider has to wear protective gear like the helmet to prevent head injury for the duration of the ride. But it is absolutely safe for kids 7 and up. I strongly suggest you ride the Zooc ride even once. It will give you a sudden rush of excitement and you will feel like a child again even for 5-10 minutes.

Kids and teens can also try the Zing Ride--a combination of swing and zip line. It feels like just the real thing except that you feel much comfortable and safe as you seat on an actual swing. Not to worry though, there are seatbelts to keep you safe and harness.

But for the more adventurous ones, don't miss the thrill of Zoocobia's other island called Clarkzilla at the Mango Camp. Adventure-seekers will surely be satisfied with the presence of 4x4 rides on a hilly rough ride. Get the chance to maneuver a powerful 4-wheel engine in an off road rail. Get ready to course through the slopes, mud and terrains using a well-secured leisure vehicle. Challenge yourself to zooper up your 4x4 experience by crossing river, lahar and off to Mount Pinatubo. It is indeed one hell of an exhilarating ride. It is worth all the fun, thrill and the excitement. You are getting more than what you paid for. It will be an unforgettable experience for you.

If riding the 4x4 ride is too much for you, one could try the Zoocobia's Clarkzilla Zip line. A 400 meter stretch of a zip line, it is not just a must-try when you come and visit Zoocobia's Mango Camp Clarkzilla area. I tried it myself, and I swear, it isn't for the faint of heart. The fun part does not stop with the zip line though. After your zip line comes the more scary part: the carabao ride that will fetch you from the end of the zip line course. What's so scary about the carabao ride? The carabao will fetch you with a wooden cart but that's the catch, you need to hold on to your grip as the ride goes on that hilly slope. It's fun, it's indeed exciting yet a bit scary as it will become one of your most memorable fun experience at this extraordinary zoo called Zoocobia.

Things to Do in Dumaguete City on a Budget

Dumaguete comes from the word “Dagit” which meant to snatch or kidnap. It was named that way because during the past, it was said that pirates had occupied the city. Nowadays, when you go and visit Dumaguete City, don’t be surprised if the beauty of the city will snatch your heart.

Given that we only had a few days in the “City of Gentle People”—Dumaguete City—we wanted to choose how and where we would spend our days well. An easy choice would have been to go to the nearby towns in the outskirts of Dumaguete, but due to limited budget and time, we decided to stick to the city and see what’s there to see.

Our palates led us to explore the different restaurant and establishments around the city. It was also a natural and easy excuse for us to visit since Mom had just celebrated her birthday, and we tried to find excuses to eat.

We’re pleased to find a paranomic view of a fine day in the city of Dumaguete at a restaurant called Lab-as and Hayahay, both fronting the sea along Rizal Boulevard on Flores Avenue, Piapi, Escano Beach. Officially, both restaurant serves the freshest seafood’s and traditional Filipino cuisine but they differ in atmosphere. Lab-as is more fine dining while Hayahay is more laid-back, chill, and relaxing treetop al fresco dining.

Eat what the locals eat. We had lunch Dumaguete style—heapings of fragrant puso rice (Visayan rice cooked in coconut milk wrapped in coconut leaves) and a plate of kinilaw na tanigue or Wahoo. In Dumaguete, kinilaw is eaten like ulam (viand), so each spoonful was a contrast of cool and steaming hot. The freshest, sweetest fish, the acid freshness of calamansi, the bite of ginger, the spicy heat of chopped chili, and a heap of crushed chicharon (crispy post rind) to add crunch meatiness + a picturesque view of the Visayan sea—truly made that meal unforgettable. It was the best kinilaw I had ever eaten in my entire life! On the other hand, the Sinigang na Blue Marlin with loads of veggies blew us away. It was fantastic!

After lunch, we rode a tricycle that would take us to the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria, Diocese of Dumaguete. Towards the side, a spectacular view of the city greeted us with the Grotto and the Belfry or Dumaguete Bell Tower piqued our curiosity. Originally built in 1754-1776, it was reconstructed in 1885 and was extended with its present façade in 1936.

Across the church is the Quezon Park. Take a photo at Maria Clara and our national hero, Jose Rizal at the heart of the plaza. Here’s a little trivia in history: Jose Rizal had been to Dumaguete City on the eve of July 31, 1896 on his way back to Manila from Dapitan, Mindanao. Rizal was with his love, Josephine Bracken and sister Narcisa. On August 1, 1896, Rizal met Governor Emilio Regal, head of the islands of Negros Oriental along with Faustino Herrero Regidor, Rizal’s former classmate. Rizal did an eye operation on Governor Emilio Regal within the same day just before he left the city of Dumaguete. And to honor and remember Rizal’s kind gesture, thus the statue of Rizal and the character of Maria Clara (from Rizal’s novel, Noli Me Tangere) can now be found in the heart of the city.

Don’t forget to take pictures with the old fire truck found at Quezon Park, as well as the display of old canyons located within the area. Sit on a bench and enjoy the beautiful day while watching happy locals strolled by. You might see some kiosk selling tempura (small kikiam also called as orlian) and Ngo-hiong (lumpia roll in five spiced powder). Go ahead, order some and dip them in hot sauce.

Tour the Silliman University. Established by American Presbyterians in 1901, it has pre-war buildings mixed with modern structures and facilities with over 300 acacia trees throughout the campus. It’s like the University of the Philippines in the South. Their Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium is similar to the Cultural Center of the Philippines. If I could only turn the hands of time, I would’ve chosen to study here.

Due to the heat of the sun, we headed for Panda Fried Ice Cream, an ice cream shop on Silliman Avenue. Pinoy-style artisanal fried ice cream, Panda’s a frontrunner in the local scene. It had exciting flavors such as Malunggay (Moringa Oleifera) flavored ice cream, Melon, Vanilla, Chocnut etc. The ice cream’s delicious. Curious? It’s worth checking out. With ice cream in hand, we trekked the city’s pedestrian lanes and found a store called Handumanan that’s filled with souvenirs.

Another fascinating attraction was Silliman University’s Marine Mammal Museum or University Town Anthropology museumon Hibbard Avenue where fossils and remains of different giant whales and sea creatures like Dugong (sea cow) were on display. This one fascinated Kyle to no end! Admission fee is P25 per person. This is quite far from the heart of the city because it’s near the beach (near the coastline) but definitely worth the trip.

Many sweets show European influences such as sans rival, silvanas, ensaymada, pastillas, cookies, muffins, cinnamon buns, pralines etc. The said business started by the late Trinidad Sagarbarria y Teves (1920-2004); she may have passed away but her family continues her legacy to the people of Dumaguete and up to this day, her to-die-for silvanas are still the best! Thus it became the famous Silvanas from Dumaguete. Remember the immaculate white and sky blue colors of the box—they’re guilty pleasures you must-try while in Dumaguete! Sans Rival’s Silvanas costs P125 a box (consists of 10 pieces). Their silvanas are made from heirloom recipe. Oozing with butter, its slightly sweet and chewy delicately layered yellowish or brownish (they even had chocolate flavored silvanas) crust covering is enough to make you salivate for more and drives more tourists crazy that they end up buying a big box of those heavenly goodies. Try their warm, soft and deliciously heavenly cinnamon buns. Even if you’re not a cinnamon fan, you’ll easily be converted upon first bite. Sans Rival’s cookie monster cake is also quite a legendary among the people of Dumaguete.

The next day, after checking the Google map for directions, we headed to the Dumaguete Public Market on Bishop Surban Street for some cheap breakfast. Realizing that it was just around the corner from where we were staying, we had to experience “painitan”—a cup of rich hot chocolate or coffee and a local budbod (read: “Suman”—local delicacy made from glutinous sticky rice and chocolate cocoa). While you’re there, be adventurous when it comes to food and sample the Dumaguete local viands such as Paklay (pork dish), Balbakwa (ox tail soup) and Chicken Halang-halang.

Along Sta. Catalina, don’t forget to try Pizza Jamba at a place called Food Net. It had everything I like to eat: chicken, seafood, viands, barbecues etc. But the best happens to be their Pizza Jamba with seven different flavors: Hawaiian (consists of cheese, base with pieces of ham and pineapples); Pepperoni (pepperoni spruced up with onions, bell peppers and cheese; Super Meaty (all-time favorite ground beef topped with pineapples, onions, mushrooms and cheese); Cheesy Pizza (topped with cheese, basil and sautéed garlic); Pizza Karne (loads of ground beef topped with mushrooms, bell peppers, onions and cheese); Hot and Spicy (Ground meat topped with peppers and cheese); Hungarian Pizza (topped with sausages, spiced with onions, bell peppers and cheese. For a 14” sized pizza, they’re pretty cheap for P120 each. Pizza Jamba’s very tasty and crunchy with its thin crust; they’re perfect for an afternoon snack. We spent a good six hours tasting all we could possibly sample. If you have extra money to spare, Dexter’s Pizza (also on Sta. Catalina) is your next bet.

The original inasal can still be found in nearby island of Bacolod, but Dumaguete had their own version called inato. Slow-cooked and grilled to perfection, chicken inato is best eaten with s sawsawan (condiment used for dipping) of sinamak (age old local vinegar) mixed with ginger, chili, and other spices and generous amounts of garlic rice. Don’t forget to drizzle it with annatto chicken oil. It’s like chicken confit simmered in annato oil. Most small native chickens have tough meat but this one is juicy and tender. For the best chicken barbecue, head over to City Burger (which surprisingly does not offer burger on their menu) along San Jose Street for some juicy barbecue chicken. Jo’s Chicken Inato (Rizal Boulevard and Silliman Avenue) comes close with its P95 meal with unlimited rice.

Dumaguete will certainly be in your heart for its own rustic charm. I wish to go back there someday soon. Only The Lord knows when.

The Oasis is a function room that holds indoor meetings or closed door seminars. Here, one can have a view of the lush premises outside through the glass panels while having that privacy.

My Mind Museum Mind Blowing Experience

It had taken quite awhile before I was able to finally had the chance to visit The Mind Museum. But I'd have to say it is indeed one hell of a mind-blowing experience. Imagine seeing a life size fossil of a huge Tyrannosaurus rex right before your eyes? Sure, I used to see them on my textbooks and encyclopedias, but nothing beats the real thing. It was the first time I've seen one and it was truly A-W-E-S-O-M-E in all capital letters!

Going to the Mind Museum is such a joy to begin with. There were a lot of interactive stuff which kids and those kids at heart can tinker with. I was able to learn a lot, see and absorb everything there is to see...It is a very family friendly destination to visit. And it is in the heart of the city, so going there is easy peasy, very accessible from the MRT. Children will surely enjoy and learn so much from the different facilities and it is very well maintained. You can be assured that you'll be getting what you've paid for.

I super love these baby fossilized dinos. It made me feel like a child again or better yet it made me feel like Angelina Jolie's character, that of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. I also like the evolution of man exhibit found at the Mind Museum. It looked just like the real thing. It's nice to see that we came from the apes and we knew how we had improved through ages in terms of looks.

I couldn't help but have my photograph taken with the large T-Rex dino on my back. It's like being inside the Jurassic Park set. Well, sorry I'm such a movie buff, I kept mentioning about films. But Mind Museum truly fuels your mind, drives you to think about life and science as it opens you to a whole new world of possibilities and the history.

The static ball is such a hit among children and Mind Museum guests as well. With your hair up in such way, who wouldn't want to experience such thrill and delight?

Meeting the robot Mimo live is also great. Man made Mimo may not be perfect, but he's a prototypeof the robots in the future.

Going to the galaxy is also possible with Mind Museum. We were able to see the outer space through a short film. And we're able to learn a lot about galaxies, planets and asteroids to name a few.

The school year is about to end. In fact, most of us could already feel summer’s scorching heat. But you don’t have to wait for summer or your child’s school to initiate a family field trip—you and your young ones can maximize your weekends at various edutainment places in nearby towns where learning and having fun go hand in hand.

First Stop—PARADIZOO, Mendez, Cavite

Paradizoo is where animals and flowers abound! If your child is an animal aficionado, he will have fun at Paradizoo. Located in Mendez, Cavite—this mini animal haven is home to farm animals including miniature horses, one-hump camels, goats, boars, rabbits, birds, and even a five-legged cow and greyhound dogs. From donkeys to birds, little ones will enjoy pointing out the animals they are already familiar with as well as those that are new to them.

Carousels provide endless delight to young kids, but how about letting your child ride on a real pony? Dress your child in jeans and sneakers, and don’t forget your camera!

Must do: Petting Area—For as little as Php10, you and your young one can feed carrots to furry rabbits and guinea pigs in an enclosed area. The petting area also extends to nearby pens housing llamas, goats, deer, camels, donkeys, cows, birds, and ponies.

Come See the Butterflies—Your kids will marvel at these winged wonders at Paradizoo. They’ll also learn about the life cycle of butterflies and if you’re lucky even get to touch real caterpillars. Here, your family can stand in a butterfly enclosure and wait for these beautiful creatures to perch on you!

Try a hand at milking goats. Yes, with a guide, you can take turns at milking goats. While you’re there, take advantage of buying fresh goat’s milk as well.

Have a toe-tickling experience. Take off those shoes and dip your feet in the tiles mini pool. For a token fee, you and your child can experience the feeling of doctor fishes gently nibbling away at the dead skin cells of your feet. Children’s sensory experiences will expand as they find out firsthand how tickly it feels.

Children will also learn about how bees produce honey as well as caring for the animals. Paradizoo has an in house pet cemetery and will soon have Noah’s Ark style pet columbarium.

Organic produce is also on sale, which include a kilo of hydroponic lettuce for Php100. Paradizoo really concretized the lessons and discussions they’ve had in school about herbivore animals and other farm creatures. Paradizoo is indeed a paradise tucked in the heart of a busy concrete jungle. A quick escape from the city as you bask in the beauty of both flora and fauna.

Second destination—RESIDENCE INN

Only fifteen minutes from Paradizoo is a place called RESIDENCE INN. Located in Tagaytay. I’ve been to Residence Inn a couple of times since my junior high school, I was surprised with the improvement it has made since the last time I’ve been there.

If you’re looking to spend some family quality time on a weekend, pack a picnic and head over to Residence Inn. There are tons of activities you can do for fun such as zip line, wall climbing, watch a show, take photographs and just enjoy the cold weather.

At specific times during the day, a magic show takes place in the main area of the zoo where animals interact with the show’s cast to the audience’s delight.

My nephew, ten-year-old Kyle enjoyed his first visit. He particularly liked touching the snake, and he wasn’t scared at all! The handlers were very knowledgeable about their animal wards and assist the children really well. Trying the zip line was also a great moment for him. He couldn’t stop talking about it for days.

The nippy weather gives zip line riders their double-shot of chills and thrills. Once you’re suspended in mid-air, you are rewarded with a heart-stopping views of the dense emerald hued ravine and the stunning view of Taal Volcano through it.

We stayed in one of their aqua verdana suites where there was 42” colored LCD cable TV, as well as fully equipped mini refrigerator and mini bar. Upon opening the aqua terraces and verandas, the stunning bay view will be greeting you. Kyle loved the ultra-comfort mattresses and lush pillows and fabrics our bed had. My Mom on the other hand, liked the fact that coffee and tea making facilities are in every suite rooms like the one we had. But I loved it best for its own Jacuzzi tubs (where I can take a bath while watching my favorite TV program) and private bath plus a rainforest shower head in a separated glass enclosed shower.

Chocolate lovers will be glad to know that there’s a chocolate night cap drink served, that’s aside from the welcome drink and fresh fruits.

Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary: Take the trek for a different kind of bonding!

When we went up in Baguio City last year, we decided to go to the Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary for a change. We've been to the City of Pines a couple of times and things had become quite monotonous: ride a bike, paddle a boat and mount a horse--so to make it extra special, we went to go trekking on the hilly terrain of the Sanctuary.

The best part is the hanging bridge. It is quite curve so we had to be really careful. The view had been perfect--stunning and we felt like boy scouts while we were touring the said place. There were 14 stations on the Sanctuary. The cosmic journey one has to take is quite steep, but definitely worth one's trip.

Yes, it's a hilly terrain and you have to go down to enjoy the view.

One will enjoy nature at its best. Communing with nature and in deep prayer will surely be experienced in Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary. They even had picnic areas but you have to bring in your food. Also be ready with a bottle of water in hand as the trek will surely make one thirsty.

The city of Tagaytay is known for a number of beautiful gardens--some are known; many are still hidden. Those that are still hidden get to the consciousness of the public through word of mouth. Take for example the lovely garden of Kampo Berde. Located in Baranggay Sicat, Alfonso, Cavite (yes, it is situated between Tagaytay and Alfonso Cavite), it is deprived of any indication that somewhere along this long and winding road is a paradise waiting to be discovered. This paradise is actually an events place, so, according to its owner Mrs. Cristina "Mama Solita" Villas, "you get to celebrate life in Kampo Berde".

Once you enter, trellises will greet you complete with a calming fountain to welcome your senses. The gurgling of the water mixes well with the cool breeze in the place. But upon closer scrutiny, you will delightfully find out that nature surely knows how to take its own course as there are some unruly branches and saplings that sprout here and there. When we went there, it felt like fiesta because there were colorful trimmings all around the place, making you feel all the more welcome to come and commune with nature in this small paradise.

"We wanted to share our garden to the public. When my husband Danny acquired this place, it was his idea to turn it into a garden. We planted most of the things you see here. Even if the family lives in Makati, as much as possible we make it a point to visit Kampo Berde often to invigorate our senses," says Mrs. Villas.

"Seeing how Tagaytay has become quite popular for destination weddings, we started working our plans to eventually open this garden to the public. Taal Batangas: History Book Come to Life

I jumped upon at the chance to visit Taal, Batangas again after more than two years. Despite my frequent travels, I find it unfortunate that a common Filipino’s knowledge of Taal was limited to the overly popular volcano and the lake, and to the Internet. When I told friends that I’m going home to Taal for the Holy Week, I got a lot of flak with raised eyebrows. Taal volcano’s level alert was raised to two, and people had been wondering what on earth was I thinking of? I soon realized the misconception between my friends and I. In fact, most Filipinos who had not set foot in Taal might be thinking the same thing.

For the record, the Taal volcano is not part of the town of Taal. It is actually located in Talisay, Batangas. To get near the crater, one must ride a ferry boat. The laid-back town of Taal, on the other hand, can be found after the towns of Cuenca and Alitagtag in Batangas. It is also after the town of Lemery, if you’re driving from Tagaytay.

It is always different and more satisfying to experience the town itself. It is the South’s answer to the UNESCO World Heritage town of Vigan. Walking through the streets of Taal Batangas will bring you back to the time of your ancestors with Spanish-inspired houses abound. Talking to its people, appreciating it visually will make one learn more about its rich culture, history and heritage.

My grandfather’s side, the Ylagans were one of those who had built a “bahay na bato,” in the mid 1800’s. Our ancestral house proved to be a perfect introduction to Taal’s heritage. “Bahay na bato” in the southern region had the upper level of the house made of wood while the lower part is made of stone. And since television was not invented yet at the time, people amused themselves by watching other people pass by, so they had huge windows.

To give you a better idea, my great great ancestors had no less than Marcela Agoncillo (yes, the woman who sewed the first Philippine Flag) and Eulalio and Gliceria Marella Villavicencio (The Forgotten Heroine of the Philippine Revolution) as neighbors. The Villavicencio’s house was the refuge of Filipino soldiers and the secret meeting place of revolutionary heroes. I can’t think of anything cooler than that!

Nowadays, their ancestral houses are open to the public. It offers a sneak peek into the heroine and their family’s life in those days. Unfortunately, cameras aren’t allowed in both houses, so I cannot use mine. You have to visit and see for yourself. But it is interesting to note that during those times, Filipinos have two living rooms. There used to be a level of intimacy between Filipinos then. If you are not a close friend of the family, you are relegated to the ante sala, which is smaller than the main sala. But if you are considered family friends or relatives, you get to sit in the main sala.

There’s also the centuries-old Our lady of Caysasay Church. We were able to access the church via the San Lorenzo Ruiz Steps—that’s 125 granite steps. Nearby is the Sacred Well of Sta. Lucia. This used to be a brook where the Lady of Caysasay granted miracles and where a church was previously built. We could see the half-submerged church façade peering out of the earth.

The Basilica of Saint Martin de Tours located in the heart of the town is one of the oldest Catholic churches and undoubtedly the biggest church in Asia. It rises majestically amid patches of ancient ruins and a row of residential houses still aglow with old-fashioned splendor. Breathtaking even at first glance, the Basilica of Saint Martin de Tours cut an imposing figure, a clear testament carved in stone of both the imperial power of Spain and its unwavering faith in its church centuries ago. The basilica is now in thick major restoration effort that started last year.

Taal truly provides an opportunity to establish a deeper connection with one’s heritage. It is more than just ancestral houses, it is history book in itself, with each turn a story that left us enthralled and wanting for more.

Balatoc Mining Tour: Experience the Thrill of the Underground

We wanted to go up North in Baguio City, but for a change we decided to visit places we haven't been to, that means--no Burnham Park, no Camp John Hay, no Wright Park etc...

We ended up going to Benguet Mining Corporation in Balatoc, Itogon, Benguet. What made the trip more exciting was that we all became a miner for a day. We got to wear a typical miner's hard-hats and boots. We learned all the tools a miner uses to search for gold.

Part of the tour was to witness a real dynamite explosion inside the cave to make visitors like us feel what it's like to hear such but we were assured by the tour guide that it was safe since we're pretty far from the actual place where they had lit them. We were lucky to ride on the underground locomotive mine train in the famous Vegas tunnel. The mining tour ended with our own certificate to boot and we were given our own chapa ID for keepsake.

Symphony of Parol: Light and Sound Christmas Display at the Ayala Triangle Gardens

My friend Tita Galicinao and I went to an event yesterday. But after the event, both of us didn't want to go home yet. Since the event was held in Makati, we figured we could still roam around and see what's new in the metro. We heard so much about Ayala Triangle Gardens--behind the Ayala Tower One along Ayala Avenue. Tita and I had not been there yet, so we decided to go there. When we got there, only a few people were at the said park. But there were rows of restaurants where you can unwind and relax amidst the beauty of the park. You can choose from Banapple, Omakase, Golden Spoon Yogurt, Cara Mia Gelato, Wee Nam Kee and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. There's definitely a place to satisfy your cravings. Oh, and did I mentioned the garden has a free Wi-Fi from Globe? It is a delight to look at during the day as visual relief from all the district's tall buildings, but it is even more of a delight to visit in the evenings and on weekends.

Anyway, there's a light and sound show every night that starts at 6PM. We were amazed by the dazzling lights that was scattered within the area--some were on the trees, some are even on the grounds hidden within the grass. There was a medley of Christmas music playing on speakers and the lights seemed to dance to the beat of the music. It truly was a spectacular show that lasted for about twenty minutes.

Even Kyle who didn't liked to go to the Ayala Triangle Gardens at first enjoyed the show when he saw the lights twinkling brightly in different colors. He even danced to the Christmas music. However, if you'll be going there with kids in tow, I suggest you bring him a jacket and perhaps a hat because it does get cold during the night's show. You may even bring his bike so he can bike around while waiting for the show to start, with adult supervision, of course. The Ayala Triangle Gardens was built in the old Manila International airport, so there's a lot of history within its fences. Animals like dogs are allowed within the park area as well, just be responsible for them including their poops.

The Ayala Triangle Gardens is open to the public for free. The "Symphony of Parol" light and sound show will run until December 23, with special weekend shows on December 18 and 19. There will be public performances by choirs and a few personalities to serenade the guests.Designed by multi-awarded lighting designer Voltaire de Jesus and complemented by talented sound engineer Jethro Joaquin, the show uses the gardens' main plaza and huge acacia trees as the frame and setting for a multi-sensory, immersive experience.

It is a light spectacle highlighting color with musical score that is fun and contemporary, with a distinctive theatrical feel. The show is truly dramatic, a symphony of parols, kinetic lighting and festive music. I had blast myself photographing the event and the lights. Don't forget to bring your cameras, as if I had to tell you that. Filipinos are known to be picture-taking addicts. We all love taking photos, capturing each moment everywhere we go, don't we? That's why the term, "kodakan" came into our language. Anyway, you may see this wonderfully made Christmas light and sound show only until December 23, so hurry and see the show soon.

COD Christmas Display Lives On

The Greenhills Christmas on Display. This year's theme: Christmas in Wonderland

On my other blog, http://www.purpleplumfariy.blogspot.com/, I had previously featured the COD Christmas display that was transferred from the old Manila COD Department store building in Cubao to the Greenhills Shopping Center in Greenhills, San Juan. However, much to the disappointment of Filipino families who frequent the display, when the COD department store had closed down, the display also had to be stopped. But only for a while. It was soon revived by the same people behind the show when the Greenhills Shopping Center offered them to mount the shows again, but this time in San Juan. Mr. Alex Rosario, the brains behind the show that started 50 years ago (whose family owned the old Manila COD), who's now 84 years old is still at the helm of things when it comes to the COD Christmas display. His son, Rey, has followed his dad's footsteps to make sure that the tradition won't die.

For those born in the '70s up to the late 90's, I'm sure you guys are quite familiar with this annual Christmas display with different themes each year. According to Mr. Joey Santos, Greenhills Shopping Center General Manager, as early as the month of February each year, they'd start working on the display and brainstorming on concepts and materials to be used.

Santos said what makes the present animatronic display different from the past COD shows is that aside from being much bigger, the technology being used has become more sophisticated in recent years. “Presently, the show is bigger and we make use of electronics and automation. It’s three-dimensional. Aside from these, Pinoy or homegrown ang paggawa nito,” he said.

“To me, I think the COD show is the biggest Christmas promotion in town. The recall is huge. The people who come to see the show include not only the people of this generation, they also bring their kids, family members. Maganda rin ang feedback ng aming tenants because it helps Greenhills become stronger,” he said.

Santos, at the same time, said their vision is to keep the COD animatronic alive in the next few years because for them, this is their small contribution to the Filipino family and society as a whole.

Greenhills Shopping Center Christmas Display Show starts at 6:30PM everyday from Mondays-Sundays until January 2, 2011. Admission is FREE! What's more, there's lots of tiangge (really bargain items and goodies) and food kiosks to choose from before the show starts. I strongly suggest be there early as parking is quite difficult, and to get yourselves seats.

Iloilo—Island of southern mellowness and charm. You can’t rush through Iloilo. Take things as natives do: easy. Which is really the best way to appreciate its wealth of ancestral houses and churches. While you’re there be sure to shop for their pina and jusi, delicate fabrics woven from pineapple and banana fibers, and then hand-embroidered for Filipino costumes like the barong tagalog. Try to visit during Dinagyang Festival or Paraw Regatta.

There were a lot of reasons to visit Iloilo, aside from its friendly people, the freshest bounty from the sea can also be found in Iloilo. There were also lots of historical places in the city including the church where it was believed that Dr. Jose Rizal dropped by on his way to Dapitan. The UNESCO World heritage church in Miagao is also a must see for travelers. Don't forget to eat Diwal, Lato and the popular rice cake called "magkayakap" where two rice cakes were joined together by a banana leaf.

I've been fascinated with Iloilo. It has the charm of the past and it has its own uniqueness. For one, it's the only place in the Philippines that has a gender-sensitive type of church. I mean, there's a church that only had Saints that were all men and another one that had all women Saints. It also had the Lopez owned Boat House and Nelly's garden. What's more? I've observed that it's only in Iloilo that people would leave their bags when they commune during mass and they'd find out their bags later in the same place, without any doubt. How trustworthy and honest Ilonggos are, weren't they?
More than its rich culture and wonderful scenic spots, its uniqueness among all the other places I've been to, I guess Iloilo fascinated me all the more because of its people. They're "malambing" and very approachable. Find out and see for yourselves.

The Charm of Camiguin

Each time I travel, especially to places I’ve never been to, I can’t help but gush that God must have loved Filipinos so much He gave us the best postcard-perfect views on this side of the globe. We have wonderful beaches, hills, plus marine biodiversity being part of the Coral Triangle along with other countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

I’ve seen this awesome island on the silver screen when I was about eight or nine years old. But I had no idea I’d actually step on the island one day. And again, like most of my travels, I am at a loss of words to describe it. The jetsetter in me got really excited when I was told I’m heading off to Camiguin. The roads were steep and narrow. It felt like it had taken us forever to reach the island. We had to ride a plane to Cagayan De Oro, and then from CDO airport, we had to ride a van going to Balingoan Port, then a Ferry Boat to take us to the island, then another van again before we could reach Paras Beach Resort where we had stayed

I have collected sand from all the beaches I’ve visited—and still counting—yeah, I know I can hear the environmentalists protesting. It’s not much really, just a fistful each time, which I place on my Starbucks Mocha Frapuccino Bottle when I get home.

I just become completely different person when I am communing with nature. And it’s a feeling I do not get anywhere else. Camiguin had given me more than I had expected. I loved its quaint scenery. It reminds me of the good old times, it helps my soul become nourish as it offers picturesque spots I never even knew existed. I am charmed with Camiguin that I promise to keep coming back to this wonderful place forgotten by the rest of time.

Pack your bags, hit the beach, get a tan, go home. You know it perfectly, the routine when you visit a beach. But it truly gets boring before so long, it becomes just another vacation you spend on the same beach. Aren’t vacations are supposed to be fun, right? It’s supposed to be the time you spend doing things you don’t normally do like wearing that snazzy bikini swimsuit or board shorts instead of the corporate attire or school uniforms you’re used to. And you’re supposed to be having fun than sitting in that lonely cubicle or chair of yours.

THAT is vacation.

So forget about going to usual beaches this time because there’s one beach you definitely have to check out—well before it gets too popular and boring. Coron, Palawan may not exactly ring a bell yet for those who have not even heard of the wonders of Coron. Its beaches have clear blue waters, pristine white sand and it’s like having the island to yourself. But going to the island has its price of course. It lacks the amenities you expect from five star resorts like air-conditioned rooms and elevators. Getting there is pain.

When I said that the aircraft was small, I meant around 25-seater with no seatmate.

Traveling to Coron is already an adventure itself. You ride a small plane to Busuanga where you’re most likely to get dizzy from air packets the minute you step off the aircraft. You’ll have to ride an open jeepney from the airport to a port, there’s a boat-ride waiting for you. The waves can be choppy and they aren’t for the faint of heart or the unprepared.

A refreshing ride on a kayak with friends is indeed a fun way to unwind.

When you get to Coron, you get to pick which island you will settle in. There aren’t a lot of people on the island except of its locals. But keep in mind that some islands are privately owned so you have to check out first before you make camp, ask the boatman about it. Although there are cell sites there are also dead spots on the island. As for Wi-Fi, you can forget about bringing your gadgets save for your camera and music player; after all, you’re here to unwind and relax. And don’t forget to tell the boatman where he’s picking you up. Unless being left here is what you’re aiming for. What’s next after you get settled?

To be sure, settle at an island near Kayangan Lake. You could also ask your boatman to bring you to Twin Lagoons where you could kayak and snorkel (most resorts provide gears) and see the old-century Japanese wreck. Check out other islands nearby like Calauit islands, known for its animal paradise. It’ll make you feel like you’re in Africa or in the reality-show Survivor. While you’re there, explore the island by dropping by the Maquinit Hot spring, Banol Beach, Siete Picados and if you’re more adventurous; try hiking the 700+ steps of Mount Tapyas.

Enjoy the beach because it has the most pristine waters you will ever find. Yes, it’s a whole lot better than Boracay. The white sand is fantastic too. Go there on a sunny day and you’ll surely be trigger happy with your camera because the mixture of the blue skies and waters, golden white sand and the green hills as well as limestone cliffs means everything’s picture perfect. At night, it’s only you, the sea and the stars. If you haven’t experienced stargazing on a clear sky, now’s your chance.

So if you want to hit the beach minus the crowd and the insane accommodation fees, then going to Coron will be your best bet for a getaway.

Imagine if our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal would be your own chaffeur around the country driving in style with his own jeepney and you're one of the lucky ones being his passengers? Then, he asks, How well do you know our country? Where would you ask him to take you? Quite a difficult question to answer, isnt?

The fortitude of the Filipino people, with their innate cheerfulness and optimism in adversity, is quite remarkable. Filipinos are hard people to define: Oriental by virtue of geography and their Malayo-Polynesian roots, nut the temperament, outlook in life, and earthly Catholicism more suited to Central America than to races in Southeast Asia.

Filipinos are regarded as one of the most convivial and spontaneous people of Asia. Beneath the sudden, sometimes volatile swings from fatalistic and pensive moods to high spirits, is an underlying warmth, generosity and grace few visitors failed to notice.

The joie de vivre of the Filipino people, their passion for music and rythm, is most apparent during festivals and fiestas. It is hardly surprising that these attractive people and their impartial hospitality should attract not only the serious travelers but also the dedicated seeker of pleasure.

Sadly, even fellow Pinoys themselves are not really familiar with their own country. Most of us have gone abroad without really having the chance to explore their own beautiful islands. We have 7,107 islands to explore and so much more. As citizens, we often fail to see our own country's rich bounty in terms of scenic spots and picture-perfect islands. We need to know our history, geography and love our own; these will give us enough information where we had actually came from. It will be a shame for us if foreigners would be able to appreciate our country more while fellow Pinoys haven't.

There could hardly be a better time, in fact, to visit and explore the wonders of the Philippines. Most of the archipelago remains remarkably untouched by commercial tourism. With the exception of major cities and a handful of well publicized tourist destinations, untrammeled beaches, coral reefs, ancient rain forests, volcanic peaks, nature reserves, marine faura and little known ethnic beauty and eclectic culture--the country's Epicurean night life offers a heady blend of music club, casinos, discotheques and bars to suit most tastes.

With Soulful travels, I hope that my followers and readers, fellow bloggers in blogsphere, as well as foreigners soon discovers that the physical and ethnic diversity of the atoll, and the permutations on travel in the Philippines where an y number of itineraries for one destination are possible, are virtually inexhaustible.

For travelers whose curiosity is not easily quenched, there's always another island just over the horizon waiting to be explored and discovered. lastly, I'd like to believe that Soulful travel is my humble way of helping prosper the economy by means of promoting tourism and the importance of nationalism, patriotism and our historical heritage.
