Light and Sound Machines – Meditation Training Wheels for the Brain?

Â

Stress relief, superlearning, heightened focused concentration, creativity, superlearning, easy changework, instant Samadhi. These are goals that can be reached if you use a Light and Sound Machine. Sometimes called a Brain Machine or Audio and Visual Stimulation (AVS), these devices allow the user to reach states of being in a controlled way.

Â

Neurologists have studied the brain since the late 1800′s seeking ways to help people with brain injuries and learning dysfunctions. Recent discoveries have reached the general population. If something can help a subject with a learning disability or brain injury, what could it do for a “normal” person?

Â

The brain has 100 billion neurons generating and transmitting electrical signals. These signals can be detected by devices called EEG machines (electroencephalograph) One of the big discoveries was the correlation of brain waves to states of being. Stress, alertness, relaxation, mediation, and sleep have been shown to match particular wave patterns. Neurologists have given these brain wave patterns names taken from the ancient Greek Alphabet. Typical alert behavior registers at 30 or more hertz (cycles per second). Alpha state is a condition that is easily achieved by closing the eyes and relaxing. 7-13hz is the range for the Alpha condition. Sleep is the lowest frequency at 0.5 to 3hrz.

Â

The most difficult state to achieve and maintain is the in-between state of Theta (3-7hz). It is the state found in the brains of meditation masters. Many students of meditation work for years to reach the Theta state reliably and consistently. Either the mind wanders off into some train of thought or it falls asleep. What if there was a way to quick and easy way to learn how to meditate?

Â

In the late 50′s a radio broadcaster named Robert Monroe was experimenting with sound tones for super-learning. He discovered that sound frequencies created certain effects in the brain. When two different frequencies are played in both ears the brain will resonate at the vibration that is the difference between the two tones. If one tone is played in the left ear at 110hz and 100 is played in the right ear the brain waves will resonate at 10hz, which is the same as Alpha Waves. The same effect is triggered by flashing or flickering light. That is why looking at a campfire is so relaxing. The flames just happen to flicker at the alpha rate. He coined the term Frequency Following Response (FFR).

Â

Light and Sound Machines are devices that bring that experience from the lab into your home for a fraction of the cost. Typically they consist of a controller, stereo headphones and lightglasses. The controller is a computer that creates the light and sound sessions. There is a user interface for selection of time, and the combination of desired frequencies or brain states. They can be selected manually, or a pre-programmed session can be picked. Headphones provide the sound with high quality comfort. The lightglasses are like opaque sunglasses with two or more LED lights positioned over the eyelids.

Â

Here are some features that can be found in superior brain machines:

Â

â?¢ Rechargeable batteries – nothing worse than a blissful L&S session cut short due to dead batteries.

Â

â?¢ Input jack – add music or hypnosis recordings to the sessions

Â

â?¢ Programmability – custom design your own sessions.

Â

â?¢ Two or more output jacks – share the experience

Â

â?¢ Ramp up ramp down – a gentle beginning and end

Â

â?¢ Download sessions via computer – add to your collection

Â

â?¢ Color choice – red, green or yellow -what is your preference?

Â

â?¢ Carry case or bag – safely store and transport

Â

â?¢ Ongoing customer support – what happens when you have a question or problem?

Â

My personal experience with brain machines started in the late eighties. I discovered the book Megabrain by Michael Hutchison. He described various technologies for accessing and enhancing brain states such as brain machines, float tanks, nutrition, and electro-stimulation.

Â

I purchased a basic AVS unit from a direct mail advertisement and began to use it regularly. I experienced some sublime peak experiences using it along with meditation tapes.

Â

The system I am using now is called Nova Pro by Photosonix. I have used it for approximately ten years. It is a real workhorse and creates beautiful experiences for me. The only trouble I have had is with the headphones. They had to be replaced after the phone cord got sucked into a vacuum cleaner. Totally my fault, but easy enough to go to any department store and pick up a new set of headphones.

Â

So, where do you get a Light and Sound Machine? There are a number of manufacturers and even more distributors for them. I have discovered that there is a cost savings by going directly to the manufacture if you can. That is why I picked the Photosonix unit. I got a great price for it. I am still using it after all this time.

Â

Ebay is a good source for a great bargain on an L&S machine. Some are sold brand new, others are used and at a remarkable savings.

Â

Amazon is an excellent source. They carry the book Megabrain and Light and Sound Machines

When your Baby Sleeps-baby Care

Young babies spend up to 14 hours of any 24 hour period asleep. Unfortunately, this doesn’t often coincide with their parents sleeping pattern, because it takes a few months for babies to learn the difference between night and day.

How Babies Sleep

The way babies fall a sleep differs from adults, adults can crash suddenly, whereas babies sleep lightly for about 20 minutes, then go through a transitional stage before reaching deep sleep. Nothing will wake them until they’ve had enough sleep. This means that babies who are simply put down will not necessarily go to sleep peacefully. You may need to nurse your baby to sleep for quite a while, so try to be patient, particularly at night, when you’re longing to go back to bed yourself.

Where Should A Baby Sleep

Where a baby sleeps isn’t important to him to start with. He won’t automatically fall asleep when put into a darkened bedroom, light doesn’t bother him at all. He’s much more likely to be disturbed by being too hot or too cold. Your baby will be happiest going to sleep hearing your voices and the household noises that he is used to in the background, so let him sleep in a bassinet or carrier in which ever room you happen to be.

Using A Baby Monitor

If you leave your baby in another room, set up a baby monitor so that you can hear him as soon as he wakes. He may feel disturbed by the silence when you leave the room and this could make him more fretful, leave the door open so he can hear you moving aroundunless you have a cat that may climb in to the crib. Avoid going back in to the room once your baby is asleep, your smell could wake him, so resist the temptation to check him too frequently.

Encouraging Longer Periods Of Sleep

A young baby needs food at regular intervals, so he’ll wake for a feeding when his body tells him to. The way to encourage your baby to sleep for a stretch (four, then rising to five or six, hours) during the night is to make sure he’s taken in sufficient calories to last. that long. This means feeding him when ever he shows he’s hungry during the day. As he steadily gains weight, he can go longer between feedings and by about six weeks he could be sleeping for at least one period of about six hours hopefully during the night. When he wakes for a night feeding make as little fuss as possible. Feed him in bed, if he needs changing, do it quickly in dim light. Don’t make this a time for chatting and games, he’ll learn that waking at night doesn’t bring any special privileges.

Rescue Package For A Sleepless Baby

Night after night of broken sleep is wearing for parents and a young baby who perhaps only catnaps during the day makes it hard to catch up. Use this checklist of strategies to reduce unnecessary fatigue.

Be aware of background noise

Don’t shield your baby from the sounds of your home. They won’t disturb his sleep, in fact some babies are soothed by the rhythmic noise of household appliances.

Keep him close to you

At night, put your baby’s crib next to your bed so that you can take him in to your bed to feed him. Then put him back in his crib afterward with minimal disturbance.

Play music

Babies respond well to soothing music (classical is best). Keep certain pieces for when your baby shows signs of tiredness.

Carry him in a sling

Rhythmic movement can hasten sleep, but your baby may wake up when you stop moving. Carry him around in a baby sling when you’re in the house, when ever possible. As well as being relaxed by the constant movement, your baby will be comforted by your body and your smell if he is this close to you.

Give him plenty of fresh air

Fresh air is said to tire babies out. In fact, it’s probably the stimulation they receive from the sounds and sights outside, or simply the movement of trees or branches, that makes them sleepy.

Father

Understanding the way your baby’s sleep patterns work will help you to tune in to his and your partner’s needs.

Being realistic

Your new baby will probably sleep less than you think. He spends 50-80 percent of the time in light sleep, when he wakes very easily. His sleep cycle-light, deep, light is shorter than an adult’s sleep cycle, so he’s vulnerable to waking each time he passes from one sleep state to another. He’s programmed to wake up for all kinds of reasons when he’s wet, hot, cold, unwell because his survival depends on it. It’s good to know that light sleep is likely to make your baby more intelligent because the brain remains active and it enhances brain development.

Having a sleep routine

Your baby has to be deeply asleep before he’ll settle down, so try a tranquillizing sleep routine gentle rocking, quiet songs and talking. He’s deeply asleep when his eyelids don’t twitch and his limbs feel limp. Lay him down and gently pat his shoulder at about 60 beats a minute for a few minutes.

Getting home late

If your baby is asleep when you get home from work, ask your partner if your baby can nap in the afternoon so that he’s awake later. Be patient if this isn’t possible. Try getting up earlier and spending time with your baby before work.

Mother

If you find you’re trying to get your baby to sleep as much as possible, ask yourself why.

Does your baby need to sleep?

Trying to get your baby to sleep when he doesn’t need to is pointless. He’s longing for your company, so talk and play with him instead, put him in a baby chair so that he can watch what you’re doing. Research has shown that even young babies are very receptive to interaction with their parents, and with increased stimulation over all, your baby is much more likely to sleep more soundly and for longer.

You need rest, too

You may become over wrought if you’re suffering from lack of sleep. Being overtired builds resentment and makes you irritable and likely to get things out of proportion. If you’re exhausted, express breast milk so your partner can take on the night time feedings for a couple of days so that you can get some rest.

Reasons To Use A Sleep Apnea Machine

When I was a child my father worked “swing shift” at a chemical plant in a nearby town. Some weeks he worked at night and slept during the day. He could be heard snoring all over the house. We thought it was funny then. Now I know it was a potential sign of a serious sleep disorder called sleep apnea.

Snoring is an indicator that your airway is not completely open. The sound of a snore is made when the air you breathe in has difficulty pushing past this obstructed area.

For most people who snore, the medical consequences are not severe. But for an estimated 5 out of 100 individuals, it is a sign of obstructive sleep apnea.

In addition to snoring, some other symptoms are excessive daytime sleepiness, restless sleep, high blood pressure, being overweight and waking up gasping for breath. Even if you don’t have high blood pressure during the day, you could have it when you first wake up due to the lack of oxygen you get when you do not breathe properly. If you awaken with headaches, this is a good indicator that your blood pressure is high due to respiratory disturbances during your sleep.

After being evaluated by a sleep specialist, if you are found to have sleep apnea, the best treatment for you is a sleep apnea machine, also known as a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. This is simply a device that sits on your bedside table and delivers air pressure to you via a mask over your nose and mouth.

A CPAP machine will hold your airway open and allow you to breathe like you should. Using a sleep apnea machine will ensure that your oxygen levels stay where they should while you sleep. It will also help you to achieve a restful nights sleep so that you feel refreshed the next day.

There are serious consequences of leaving sleep apnea untreated. A CPAP machine is the optimum choice to maintain your health and overall well being.

Baby Sleep Routine – 5 Must Know Steps

If your sick of stumbling around your house in the dead of the night trying to answer the call of your baby who apparently doesn’t require sleep, then you need a baby sleep routine. Nobody likes losing sleep and it can have drastic implications on your daily life and that of your family.

So how do we get that little baby to sleep soundly so we can relax?

Creating a baby sleep routine…

A good sleeping routine should consist of the things you need to get done with your baby before bedtime that aren’t very stimulating. We want to get the baby to start feeling sleepy, so no crazy fun games! Here is a good routine that is working well for a lot of parents:

1. Take a nice relaxing bath with the baby (don’t fall asleep yet!)

2. Give your child a feed and burp

3. Now it’s time to work your sleepy powers, read a story or sing a lullaby

4. Once the baby is sleepy, put him where you want him to sleep while still awake

5. Let him fall asleep by himself (now you can go to sleep!)

Important tip: Many new parents unintentionally create bad sleeping habits for their babies. Letting your baby fall asleep in your arms or while rocking is nice, but the baby will eventually start relying on that to get it to sleep.

You know what that means? He won’t be able to get to sleep when he wakes during the night and you’ll have to blindly thump and bump up and down the halls to get him back to sleep. Fortunately sticking to a good baby sleep routine will stop this, so you can catch some winks.

This method might not work for your baby, one solution doesn’t work for everyone. If you want to be sure and find the best baby sleep routine so you can avoid more sleepless nights and start functioning like a human being again click here: http://www.putbabytosleep.com

You’ll be able to sleep soundly after that, sweet dreams!

Baby Sleep Tips – Create A Familiar Environment

All newborns are, of course, different. Some sleep better than others at a young age, which prompts many parents to trade stories of how “lucky” or “unlucky” they were with a given child. There is, no doubt, a certain amount of mystery to getting a child to sleep well and through the night on his own. Nevertheless, a plethora of baby sleep tips exist intended to speed up the process which your child goes through before sleeping on his own.

Getting your child to sleep on his own in a timely fashion involves speeding up a natural transition: the one from sleeping with his mother to sleeping on his own. At first, when your baby wakes up in the middle of the night, he will cry for his mother, as this is the only way he knows how to fall asleep. One of the things you must do as a parent is help create the best environment for your baby to fall asleep on his own.

Many people naturally assume that the best environment for sleep is one of total silence: most of us are familiar with having to tiptoe around a sleeping baby’s room. Although a quiet environment is the best one for most adults, you’d be well advised to remember where your newborn baby has been sleeping for the past nine months: in his mother’s womb. In the womb, of course, your newborn slept in many situations that were far from quiet – when the mother was out in public, or socializing with other people. For this reason a newborn baby will often sleep better by being exposed to some quiet background noise.

You should be trying to allow some ambient “white noise” to be around your baby when he goes to sleep. Sudden loud noises will, of course, rouse him, but in most cases some background chatter and other soothing noises will help the sleep process: most adults, I’m sure, can likely remember falling asleep to the sounds of their parents and their friends having a conversation.

There are products marketed to new parents to create these ambient noises – most notably audio CDs containing tracks of soothing noise. It usually isn’t necessary to buy these, however – in most cases simply leaving the door to the baby’s nursery ajar will do the trick. In a similar vein, if your baby falls asleep around company, allow him to stay there rather than moving him to a quiet room.

By helping to create the best possible environment for your baby’s sleep, you help him learn to fall asleep in his own. Often a humming noise can help – we all know how easy it can be to fall asleep in a moving car – so having a humidifier or fan in the baby’s room can often do wonders.

Whatever solution you choose, remember that it needn’t be overly complicated. Simply leave the door ajar, or let your baby sleep in the company of others. Contrary to what many people intuitively think, if you keep your baby from sleeping in total silence, he’ll often sleep much better.

Is your baby sleeping throughout the night? Most of the mothers will experience sleep less nights once after the arrival of their baby.

Here are the wonderful baby sleep products which encourage your baby to sleep well throughout the night.

Establishing a bedtime routine:

For this, you need to settle on a baby massage, a bath, and a story time as your baby’s bedtime ritual. You need to feed your baby, rock the baby for few minutes, place him on the bassinet or crib and then sing a lullaby for him before each nap. For this you need the products like a soft bath towel, soothing bedtime stories and glider or rocker.

Soft bath towel:

Binding your baby in a soft towel after the bath is a very comforting part of your baby’s routine.

The best way to make the bath time cozier is to put the bath towel in the dryer for few minutes in order to warm up.

Bedtime stories:

Select the bedtime stories that are rhythmic and include various repetitions. The stories must be the ones that you memorize yourself and must be chanting to your baby.

Safe glider or rocker:

The glider is the most essential part of your nighttime routine. It is used to rock, glide, or read a favorite story to your child. This can be used for many years after your baby’s growth.

Maintain the baby snoozing:

If you are not getting enough sleep, you need to find the ways that help to reduce the disturbances and also help your baby to keep disturbances away from the everyday noises. Here are the baby sleep products that help to keep your baby calm.

Baby monitor:

The baby monitor greatly helps you to avoid visiting the baby all the time.

Select the best model and a simple one that picks up your baby’s coos and cries or choose a fancier representation that allows you to know the temperature in your baby’s room.

You can also get a monitor that senses all the sounds and has a camera so that you can easily look your baby from anywhere in the house.

White noise:

Monotonous noise from the fan or a humidifier will greatly help in reducing the distracting noises like telephone rings, doorbell rings, and barking of animals.

Put your baby close to you:

For the first few months, keep the baby along with you in your bedroom. So, it will be easier for nighttime feedings and it is comforting to keep your new baby close at your hand. For this, you need to buy a cradle or basinet.

Cradle or basinet:

A traditional cradle or basinet is often proposed for youngest babies. You can put the crib anywhere in your house and also in your bedroom.

You can also get a basinet that is attachable to the bed so that it is easy for you to breastfeed your baby.

Set the right temperature:

The thing that is very essential for your baby is a cozy bedroom, the comfortable cool side is always recommended for your baby. No single temperature is best for every baby.

If the baby awakens sweaty or the baby’s feet or hands are very cool to touch, then you need to add or remove the layers. For this you need to buy a wearable baby blanket.

Wearable blanket:

If your baby feels cool, then your baby needs an additional layer to sleep. For this, buy a wearable blanket that is specially designed for the baby sleep and to keep the baby warm while sleeping.

Choose The Right Baby Sleeping Bag For Your Child

Baby bags are essentially recommended by doctors for infants who are in the age group of 1-2 months to 6 years. This is because at this stage most of the growth in the baby occurs, and proper sleep is very essential for proper growth of the baby. Infants are known to change positions and postures during sleep which is a very bad habit if allowed regularly.

This is because in at such a tender age, babies cannot express themselves properly in sleep. Thus if a blanket gets covered on the baby’s face or the baby lies on its stomach during sleep, then suffocation maybe a cause that can lead to serious circumstances in sleep and your baby would not even be able to let out a sound.

Thus baby bags are the best option for keeping your baby warm, cozy and in the right sleeping posture throughout the night, so you baby stays healthy and grows well after a good night’s sleep. Now, you might find a baby bag very easily in the market, but it is very important that you choose the best out of the range, because babies have a very sensitive skin and can be prone to allergies and rashes very easily.

So, you must keep a few facts in mind while visiting the shopping mall to buy a baby bag for your baby:

• Material – You must give the first preference to the material of the bag before buying one. This is because your baby has to sleep over 8-10 hours in the sleeping bag, and so if it is not a good and soft material then it might harm the baby’s skin. Also you must see that you do not use stuffed baby bags in summer, as the extra cotton layer can make your baby too warm and deprive him/her of proper sleep.

• Right Size – It is recommended that you take your baby along with you or at least carry the right size of the baby when you go shopping for baby sleeping bags. This is to ensure that you get the bag which exactly fits your baby. Otherwise, if the bag is bigger than the baby then it will have a risk of the baby sliding its head into the bag suffocating itself. On the other hand if the bag is smaller in size, then the baby can easily get out of it or change positions in sleep by throwing its hands and feet around. So, choose a size that will fit your baby comfortably in it.

• Price – It is recommended that you always go for a branded baby bag, as it ensures good quality material and also the right size and fit for your baby. Maybe it will cost you a little more than the ordinary ones, but it’s a very small price for your baby’s well-being.

Green Child is a reputed name in the market for its Baby Sleeping Bags, Baby Nursery Bedding, Moses baskets, cot mattresses, cot bed mattresses and wooden ride toys for babies.

The History of White Noise Technology and the White Noise Machine

White noise technology can be traced back to the late 1800s when people like Thomas Alva Edison were beginning to conduct extensive research and experimentation with sound and sound waves. Some of the earliest results of those experiments were the tube phonograph and components of the modern telephone. We all know where those technologies have led but not many people have followed the white noise technology that made so many of these advancements possible. The white noise machine is only a very small part of this adventure in scientific growth and expansion.

White noise, like white light, is a combination of all of the different bandwidths or frequencies played together. Noises are broken down according to their individual frequencies and become individual sounds. Adjustments in tone, volume and other changes allow that sound to be translated by the ear into what we finally hear as the result.

The reason that a white noise generator can work is because it generally plays all of the different sound frequencies together. What this does is effectively mask or cover up any external sounds without the need to overpower them or to be played louder than other ambient sounds. This is why a relatively quiet white noise generator can be used to deaden even loud and obnoxious sounds when it is used properly.

Imagine if there were only one hundred different sound frequencies. Imagine that each one of those frequencies is indicated by a separate “voice”. If there are one hundred voices all talking at the same time, are you going to be able to discern everything that is being said? If one or two more voices are added with the addition of your conversation, do you think the casual observer will have a great chance of understanding what you are talking about? That is the functional principle behind white noise technology and the white noise sound machine.

The first commercial white noise machines were made somewhere around 1962 but that did not stop the progress of white noise technology. Today, there is a wide range of white noise technology that is readily available which was not even dreamed about back in the nineteen-sixties. From the small and relatively simple white noise generator to some of the more advanced electronic white noise makers, your white noise sound machine options will only increase as time goes on.

One of the latest additions to the white noise generator is the dubbing in of music or other sounds over top of the white noise being played discreetly in the background. Examples of this can be found in certain white noise machines that have pre-recorded sounds as well as the relatively recent introduction of the white noise cd that incorporates this same dubbing white noise technology. Together, the natural sounds mixed with the white noise itself, help to block out unwanted sounds while still allowing you to listen to music to help you relax and rest better.

The history of white noise technology and the white noise sound machine is a fascinating study across many types of medium and moving on into the future nicely as the technological advancements allow. Whether you are looking for a simple white noise machine to mask outside noises or one of the more advanced white noise sound generators with substantially more options, including the playing of relaxing music, the white noise machine is already available for you today. What the future holds for white noise generators and white noise technology looks to be a very interesting study though, and well worth keeping up with.

Reduce Stress at Home and at Work with a White Noise Machine

With increased expectations in the workplace and a rising cost of living, stress has become a leading factor in the lives of many Americans. The World Health Organization has said of stress that it is a “world wide epidemic.” For many people, stress continues to pile up from an inability to ever wind down or relax. Using a white noise machine works to reduce tension and restlessness during the times of the day when it’s most important to wind down or focus.

The importance of rest as a foundation for stress-free living
At the root of much of this stress is the fact that many people do not get enough good quality sleep. Lack of quality sleep is often the result of distractions in the environment that cause us to wake up throughout the night. A white noise machine works to mask these sounds by emitting a natural hum that absorbs the sound. The sound emitted by the white noise machine is comprised of every sound audible to the human ear so that external environmental sounds become part of the mix and goes unnoticed.

Many people have lived with too little sleep for so long that they don’t realize the impact that sleep has on their personality and stress levels. A white noise machine offers the opportunity for a deep restful night of sleep, the foundation for a less stressful day. With a good night of rest, we tend to be able to handle things easier, get frustrated less, and feel less worried overall.

Choosing to block out unnecessary distractions at work
Using a white noise machine at work can block out stressful distractions that pull you away from your focus. Using headphones to simply cover up the office noise can make you seem unavailable and make it difficult for people to get your attention when they need to.

A white noise machine does not cover up the ambient noise, but absorbs it. The workplace is a natural breeding ground for stress and some amount can be healthy and productive. However, if you’re falling behind at work or just simply can’t seem to concentrate, white noise can make a surprising impact.

Sleep and work account for more than two-thirds of the average American’s day. By using a white noise machine to reduce stress in these two critical areas, you can greatly decrease the amount of stress in your life.

4 Big Benefits of Sleep Apnea Machines

Sleeping is supposed to be a peaceful activity. But do you know that it can actually be life-threatening? Some people suffer from a disorder called “sleep apnea,” which means your breathing is interrupted while you sleep. If you have it, here are some benefits of using sleep apnea machines, which you should consider:

1. They improve your quality of sleep. Most of us wouldn’t mind sleeping better, and this is particularly true when we suffer from sleeping disorders. That’s where sleep apnea machines come to the rescue. Basically, these contraptions help air to enter your breathing airways with more ease. When you have the sleeping disorder, that’s a good thing!

A lack of oxygen is the cause of the problem, so more oxygen fed to the lungs can improve your breathing and help you to get some quality shut-eye.

2. They’re easy to use. For the most part, you only need to slip a mask on your face, and then switch on the machine. While the mask may take a while to get accustomed to, after using it a few times you will find it becoming an effortless part of your nighttime ritual.

3. They help your partner to sleep better. It can be nightmare for your partner to wake up and notice that you’re gasping for air. In fact, knowing that the disorder can (and probably will) strike while you’re sleeping can be annoying at the very least, and stressful at the worst. These machines can help both of you to catch some Z’s.

4. They’re a worthwhile investment. These machines not only help you to sleep better, they could also be a lifesaver. You can’t put a monetary figure on your life, so this is definitely a worthwhile investment. It allows you to sleep more soundly night after night.

If you’re wondering if sleep apnea machines are worth buying, then these benefits should put your worries to rest. Breathe and sleep better tonight!
