Directed by Pierre and Bertrand, this video to Charlie Winston's rather catchy Kick The Bucket is a super-sweet and suitably pre-Halloween affair. Popular in France, this singer-songwriter Brit released his first album, Hobo, from which Kick The Bucket is taken, earlier this year on Real World Records/Atmospheriques.

And in other news regarding Kick The Bucket today, there is somewhat of an in-house dispute over at LateMag Towers between myself and Leigh over which section of this track is the superior. He favours the beginning, whereas I took a shine to Mr. Winston and his facial hairstyle and his whole point of view skeleton crew kicking up a gear from about 1.50 onwards. Pointless, yet undeniably true news.

vinyl4giants has a quick interview with composer of the Black Dynamite OST Adrian "AJ" Younge. The film directed by Scott Sanders and starring Michael Jai White is a homage to classic 70's Blaxploitation flicks and needed a homage soundtrack to suit. Those familiar to the genre will know that it's one where the music is hugely integral. Often the soundtracks were works of a far higher calibre than the films themselves. Legends of funk and soul contributed to and created albums, some of which are amongst the greatest recorded works of all time. You just have to listen to Curtis Mayfield's sublime Superfly OST once and you'll see what I mean. Isaac Hayes, Bobby Womack and the Godfather Himself James Brown were all to create sonic backdrops for these black action flicks. Brown even made an album for a film that didn't exist, The Payback (Rejected by Larry Cohen as the soundtrack to Hell Up in Harlem), Brown himself felt his Black Caesar OST was sub-par.

Understanding homage is not the same as copy, Adrian "AJ" Younge has taken inspiration and developed the score he would have made had he been working at the time.

Unless you've had the distict misfortune to have been stuck under a rock lately, you'll probably know that long-established Disco House producer Daniel Wang has recently released a retrospective album of work taken from his own label, Balihu, informatively titled The Balihu Years 1993-2008.

Plucked from this generically du jour album, my pick for a weekend pick-me-up is the sweetly uplifting Free Lovin; a gorgeously chipper little number that sees classic Disco infusions sweeping what'll probably be the cutest, most free and unassuming track you'll have the pleasure to gift your ears with this weekend.

The Balihu Years 1993-2008 is out now from Rushhour.

Sporting what could well be the greatest music video since Thriller, producers Diplo and Switch's cartoon alter ego, Jamaican commando Major Lazer, came storming onto the scene this year with the debut album Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers Do on Downtown Records/Mad Decent. The first single released was Hold The Line; a Western-infused dancehall track that makes me yearn for sunshine and bass bins.

But if the track itself takes you away to sunnier climes, the video will surely take you back to happier times, playing like a homage to that golden age of kids cartoon merchandising. Indeed, anybody who regularly tuned in way back in the day to watch He-Man hold aloft his mighty sword of a morning will doubtless be similarly enamoured by this supremely spot on reworking of that classic 80's formula.

I took the beat of a long-overdue unreleased tune called “Stretch Reflex” and melted it together with the synths and melodies from another song that was supposed to be on Underground Communication, but ended up getting saved for later. It was written as a pensive homage to the dead, the original melodics sound like a black metal song but in this version they have kind of a nice 1990’s Orb or FSOL feel to them…that sound will never get old for me! Then i took some of the prettier melodies from that song and mixed them with a Lupe Fiasco acapella (i looooove his voice) and it became one of my favorite tunes to close a party with.

The theme for the classic UK TV show Return of the Saint, which starred Ian Ogilvy as Simon Templar AKA "The Saint".  The show was a revival of the classic show The Saint which starred Roger "the eyebrow" Moore.

Both shows had great themes, though the original is probably best known because of Orbitals update. However, as a little kid I remember dancing around my living room to the Theme from the updated Return of the Saint, so its kind of special to me. Plus It confirms I was damn funky even as a tiny kid (even if I do say so myself).

Anyway, behold the greatness that is the Steve Gray conducted "The Saint Orchestra" by listening below to the "Return of the Saint Theme" and as a bonus, the uber-funky and aptly named "Funko" which was the B - Side of the 45 single released in 1978 on PYE Records.

Really rather like this video for "Dynamic Tension" by Mr. Dead featuring M. Sayyid. Kind of has that gritty early 80's New York exploitation look / feel, you got in films like Driller Killer and Basket Case. The tune itself is OK and it does sample the classic Morricone ditty from A fist Full Of Dollars, which vies for the title of my favorite film ever.

On a side note "pencil Fighting" seems to be an inner city version of classic English kids pastime Conkers.

Video for "Boom Up History" by 3canal, taken from their LP "Joy + Fire". 3canal are leading exponents of the "rapso" genre of a music which is a "conscious" blending of Soca music and Hip Hop. 

The term Rapso was coined by fellow Trinidadian artist Brother Resistance (Cyar Take That) in the early 80's.
