Carole Bayer Sager • ...Too

At the beginning of the year, I wrote about the first album from one of my early fascinations, Carole Bayer Sager. I first became acquainted with her through her collaborations with Melissa Manchester in the late 1970s. I was a fan of Manchester, and figured out I loved the music of Bayer-Sager as well. And when I went a little deeper, I found out I have been a fan of her songs much longer than I had know. One of her first hits was written with Toni Wine, and released in 1965. The group The Mindbenders went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "A Groovy Kind of Love" in 1965. Phil Collins topped that when he took the song to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988. She collaborated with many different artists over the years, including boyfriend Marvin Hamlisch, and her second husband, Burt Bacharach. Her work has been recorded by some of the greatest names in music, with Manchester as well as Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler, Carly Simon, Rita Coolidge, Bernadette Peters, and Liza Minnelli, to name just a few.

Well, in 1978 Bayer Sager released her second album, the aptly titled '...Too'. Her self-titled debut was released the year before, and had spawned the international hit, "You're Moving out Today", written with Bette Midler and Bruce Roberts. I will admit upfront that I quickly added both to my young collection, and made room for her third that was released a few years later. The music was beautiful, and her own quirky voice was just off kilter enough to hold my interest still, to this day. The album kicked off with a song Bayer Sager wrote with Melissa Manchester, "To Make You Smile Again". There is a sweetness to the song, I find it impossible to resist.

While I just love the way Carole can inject so much emotion into the ballads, I wasn't sure what would happen when she would take on a song with a higher octane. And on the second track of '...Too', that was answered. "It's The Falling In Love", written by Bayer Sager and David Foster, she delivered the goods on this wonderful up-tempo song, keeping up with the delicious background vocals supplied by the amazing Michael McDonald. I just love everything about this track! Enjoy "It's The Falling In Love".

Part of the reason this album intrigues me so is that I have heard some of the songs already performed by other artists. I first heard "Peace In My Heart" on the album by Mellisa Manchester, who also co-wrote the song. There is a very different feel to both versions, and I like that. I have to say, I really didn't see the next collaboration coming. "Shadows" has such inherent innocence and charm, it is impossible for me to listen to it only once. It was written by Bayer Sager, as well as Alice Cooper and Bruce Roberts. Yes, Carole worked with Roberts often, but who'd of thought about Alice Cooper? There is something about it that talks to my inner child, and reminds me I am not as grown up as I think I should be. You can hear for yourself, as Bayer Sager sings "Shadows".

That is followed by "You're Interesting", a song written with the late, great Peter Allen. It is a wonderful, flirty Pop song. There is a wonderful drama in "There's Something About You", which should not come as a surprise for it was written with Marvin Hamlisch. "It Doesn't Add Up", written with Johnny Vastano, is just dripping with charm, and just too damned cute. In another collaboration with David Foster, Bayer Sager once again picks up the tempo on "I Don't Wanna Dance No More", with some playful 1970s dance moves. The next song, written with Bruce Roberts, is my favorite from the album, and one of my favorites of all time. "One Star Shining" is a song that I have played many a time after a break up, for it talks to my soul. Give a listen and see if "One Star Shining" speaks to you.

The album ends with "I'm Coming Home Again", written with Melissa Manchester. Again, I had heard an earlier version by Manchester, but this one truly touched my heart. This whole album is pretty special, and more than 30 years later, I am still listening to it. That means I am still a huge fan of this very talented lady. Andrew Abaria • We Are The Underdogs

Looking back, I am very glad I got an email from Andrew Abaria not that long ago. I hadn't run across his music before, but due to a tip from JD Doyle of Queer Music Heritage, Andrew remedied that situation. Along the way, I discovered Andrew is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter. As the photo above can attest, he is also a handsome man, whose thoughtful portraits might belie the frothy music he makes. He is also an out and proud performer, joining the racks of many other talented artists featured on this blog. And he has just released an EP, 'We Are The Underdogs'.

When I hit play, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. There is a certain excitement about discovering new music. You can never be sure of the quality, the content, or the genre at a simple glance at the cover. There is, for me, a hope I am about to hear a voice that will speak to me. Often, it comes true, but there are also those moments when I wish the song had remained unplayed. However, if that were the case, I am not sure the same excitement could be retained, if not for the uncertainly of the experience. That said, it was not long in the first track on 'We Are The Underdogs' that I knew I'd found something I enjoyed. From the simple chords of the piano, to the addition of his voice, "Boulevard of Broken Heart" captured my attention, a bold Pop song that allowed Abaria's vocals to form a connection with me, to my heart. I could see this being sung by a true Diva, offering a bit of Whitney Realness. While the orchestration remains somewhat simple, there is a grandiosity to the song, bringing the emotions to the forefront. Rather than my silly prattling, check it out for yourself.

The tone for "Can't Stand the Fall" tilts more toward melancholia, a real hurt that is practically palpable in Andrew's voice. We can feel the loss, and identify with the pain we have all felt following an important breakup. Abaria connects with that so well, we are brought along with him. The mood certainly moved from the beginning of "Kiss Me Till They Find Us", an unadulterated joyful Pop song, shining a light on the joy a love. If this chorus doesn't make you smile, it is time to defrost that heart. By the end of the song, I was singing along, and clapping with the rhythm. That delivered us to the title track, "We Are The Underdogs". Quickly, there is a bombastic feel, more Freddie Mercury that Meat Loaf. Just when you think the song has brought you to a new height, Andrew manages to soar a bit higher. Give it a listen, and you'll undoubtedly agree.

That leaves me with the final cut on the EP, "Silent Tonight". This really is a song that allows Abaria to reach down deep, and explore his own hurt, to expose his nerve. We've all had those moments, when we are with a loved one, looking for those soothing touches, the warm embrace, or just the right words to set our heart at ease, but instead, we are greeted by that moment of silence. That completes the album, and after several listens, I am not sure I can find a weak spot on it. Arbaria takes us with him on this emotional journey, experiencing the high and low points of love and life. We might be seen as underdogs as we find our way, but it is our resilience that increase the odds for finding happiness. The Voice Season 4 • The Finals

This evening, the Top 3 acts from Season 4 are looking to secure your vote to be named the winner of 'The Voice' on Tuesday night's results show. Last week, Team Adam and Team Shakira were eliminated, when Amber Carrington and Sasha Allen, respectively, were sent home. Both are very talented ladies, and may have paid the price for some questionable song choices, as has often been the case this strong and very entertaining season. From all reports, it sounds as though both Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green will be returning in the fall for Season 5, so Usher and Shakira might be done for at least the time being. I must say, I think they have done a good job, and was hoping to see what might happen if they were to return with a season of learning under their belt. My hat's off to all the judges for doing such a strong job, without becoming the focus of each and every episode.

The Final 3 are made up with members of Team Usher, Michelle Chamuel, and Team Blake, Danielle Bradbery and The Swon Brothers. Can Usher come through with a win in his rookie season as a judge? Can his Electro-Pop starlet command the votes to unseat the Country acts? Or will Blake take the title for the third consecutive season, and earn the first victory with a budding Country star? Can 16-year-old Danielle garner the votes to be the youngest winner so far, or will The Swon Brothers become the first group to take home the title. After all, Zach and Colton bucked the odds all season long, being the first duo or group to make it to the semifinal performances, and now the finals. Will the Country vote be split between the two strong acts, leaving room for Michelle to take the title in a season dominated by Country influences? Only time and Carson Daly can tell...

Carson Daly comes out to the screaming audience to remind us that this is the final chance to impress the voters, and all three acts want to win it, and get the recording contract with Universal. It seems like they will be singing three songs each, with one new song, the song considered their 'breakthrough moment, and a duet with their coach. Touching base with the coaches as the show begins, Blake has faith either of his acts could take the title, and Usher has designs to win it all with Michelle. The first performance tonight is from the judges, who take on "With A Little Help From My Friends", the iconic song from the Lennon-McCartney songbook. Here is how the Beatles got the job done "With A Little Help From My Friends".

After a break, it is time for The Swon Brothers to give their first of the night. We see a recap of their journey on The Voice, and how far they have come over the past few months. They are singing "I Can't Tell You Why" by The Eagles. The chorus for this song is sung in falsetto, with a real sweetness to it. Right away, we hear that Zach is in great voice, taking it to the song. They hit the falsetto in the chorus and are so on, it is scary. I am loving this performance. The Swon Brothers came to take the title back to Oklahoma. Usher was somewhat cool with his critique, but Shakira loved it, and had nothing but wonderful things to say. Adam thought it was incredible, just so right on. Blake is so proud of the boys, and how they have continued to evolve as artists, never resting on safe choices. After a break, Usher talks about how proud he is of Michelle, and to mark what he thinks is her breakthrough moment, Michelle will be singing Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble".

She sound pretty damn good, but I find it is often so hard to catch lightning in a bottle a second time. She sang it beautifully, and delivered it with a real Pop/Rock feeling. Shakira tells her she is extraordinary as an artist, and that is what music needs right now. Adam just loves her energy, and what she does live. Blake agrees with Adam, and thinks she is a Rock Star. Usher calls her the winner, and is just so very proud of his pupil. After the break, Blake meets with Danielle Bradbery and her family, talking about her journey with them. Then they step on stage for a duet, and they sing "Timber, I'm Falling In Love", the great song from Patti Loveless. Blake is so sweet, taking the high harmonies, letting Danielle shine. After the break, Blake is back on the screen, this time to talk about the Swon Brothers. They are reviving the Loggins & Messina song "Danny's Song", which they first sang just last week. Their harmonies are so tight, it is hard to find fault. But once again, it is hard to spark the magic of the first performance. Solid, strong, and a delight. Usher thinks they were incredible, and made the competition disappear for a few moments. Adam agreed with Usher, and thought they did such a great song. Blake loved how they reinvented this classic, making it their own. Michelle Chamuel is up again, and will be singing "Why", the great song Annie Lennox. That is an incredible song, but Annie is a tough act to follow.

She sings the first part of the song into a mirror/video screen, with her back to the audience. That doesn't really work for me, I like it best when she has a direct connection to us. This is good, but not great. It is so hard to follow up the great Annie Lennox, who sings everything with such conviction and honesty. Michelle seemed to really connect with the final minute of the performance, which was so nice. Shakira loved it, and thought it proved her value as an artist, showing likability and capability. Blake loved the production, and thought it was wise to offer a softer performance, a different side of Michelle. Usher is just so proud of all she has done, and looks forward to hear what she will offer as an artist in the future. Blake meets with Mama & Papa Swon, before they do their duet with him. They will be singing "Celebrity", the big hit by Brad Paisley.

While the boys do their thing on the chorus, adding sweet, tight harmonies. However, the rest of the song proves to be a bit of a weak song for them. It just didn't feel like the type of song they would be singing on their own, lacking the musicality they have in abundance. After a break, it is time for Danielle to come out with her breakthrough moment. Blake believes she has had many such moments, but decided on "Maybe It Was Memphis" by Pam Tillis. Danielle performed it for the Top 16 round, which seems so long ago now. She did a lovely job, but I did feel she fell a bit flat at the end. I don't know what it was, but I thought she struggled a bit. Shakira donned a cowboy hat and tells Danielle she has such star power. Adam loves her, and announces he thinks she has won the whole competition, even thought it pains him that Blake would win again. After a break, Christina Milan reminds me why I think most of her onscreen interviews are a waste of time. Then Carson introduces Danielle, Michelle, and The Swon Brothers, who are there to sing "Home", a song from Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

I like the song, and it is fun. Then the rest of the Top 16 join them on stage. I think this is a really nice song, but the group arrangement comes off a little too 'Up With People', a bit dry and soulless. Which, by the way, I blame on the show, not the Top 3. After the break, it is time for Michelle Chamuel to duet with Usher. They will be singing "One", the great song by U2, covered exceptionally by Mary J. Blige.

Usher opens the song, with some of the best vocals I've heard from him this season. When Michelle joins him, they sound great together. By the end, Michelle is out-singing Usher, catching fire just as her coach was running out of gas. As we go to the final break, Carson reminds us that we still have a performance from Danielle Bradbery. Once again, we are reminded of her journey, and hear Blake using his superlatives again, and we get it. She is going to win. She will sing "Born To Fly" by Sara Evans.

It is really the first uptempo song we've heard from her. The song is a cute Country song, but somewhat generic to me. It lacked a bit of zip that might have allowed it to take off, but I am not sure Danielle is prepared to zip yet. I find her to be pitch perfect, but a bit vacuous, most likely because she is still so young. I wish I could get more excited about her, but it just isn't happening for me. Usher tells her she is special, and did well. Adam doesn't know what to say, since he already declared her the winner. Blake reminds us he thinks she is the most important artist to come through 'The Voice', and how important she will be to Country music. Yep, I get it, folks. I understand who you think will be announced as the winner tomorrow night. But honestly, I thought The Swon Brothers were the strongest on all three songs, followed by Michelle. My reaction all season long has been the same for Danielle, a bit tepid. But it is time for the votes to be cast, for America to pick their favorite. Dark Monday • Gwen Verdon in 'Sweet Charity'

When you think about Broadway royalty, when you find a show with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and a book by Neil Simon, that is a damn good start. Add in that the direction and choreography would be by Bob Fosse, and the leading lady played by Gwen Verdon, and I don't think you could go wrong. Well, that was the lineup for the 1966 Broadway production of 'Sweet Charity'. The production, which ran for over 600 performances, was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, winning one for Fosse's choreography. Here is a wonderful clip of the delicious Gwen Verdon singing "If My Friends Could See Me Now" on the Ed Sullivan show.

Their Heart Belongs To Daddy...

In my own way of wishing a very happy Father's Day to all those who are helping to raise children, I thought I would offer up a delectable plate of yummy treats. I will start with the song best known for it's saucy approach, written by the king a flirtation, Cole Porter, for the 1938 musical 'Leave It to Me!' This time, I thought it would be fun to include the gorgeous Lena Horne singng "My Heart Belongs To Daddy" to kick off the celebration.

In the 1950s, Ruth Wallis was known for her sexy, funny, and at times bawdy songs that were never light on the double-entendre. She never minded taking a little heat for her music, much of which she wrote herself. She often toyed with her audience, taking on taboos such as infidelity and homosexuality, long before it was acceptable. Enjoy Wallis as she sings her rather risqué song, "Long Playing Daddy".

Etta James is among the great Blues singers we have known, having made some great music during her career. Her recording of "At Last" quickly became a classic, as well as great Blues classics like "I'd Rather Go Blind". Here is her wonderful recording of "Good Rockin' Daddy", written by Richard Berry and Joe Josea which she released in the late 1950s.

There was just something so very sexy and sultry about Julie London, but she still appealed to women. I know my mother loved her, and had her records I would hear when I was young. So it was a no brainer for me to include her flirty version of "Daddy", a song written by her musical collaborator and husband Bobby Troupe.

Sunday Morning • The Lord's Prayer

As part of my celebration of Father's Day, I thought it to be a good start to offer up a song to one of the biggest Daddies of them all. Many have used "The Lord's Prayer" to sing His praises, but few could sing it quite like Il Divo, as they did on their 2005 Christmas album. Il Divo are Urs Bühler, David Miller, Carlos Marin and Sébastien Izambard, four trained opera singers who lend their talents as a quartet, singing anything from Classic masterpieces to Pop confections. Sit back and enjoy as the boys sing "The Lord's Prayer".

Father's Day with The Rat Pack

As this is Father's Day Weekend, I tried to think of a way to give a tip of the hat to all the men out there who helped raise their kids. While I was pondering that, the Rat Pack came to mind, and I decided to go with it. For those who may not know, officially, The Rat Pack was made up by Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr, Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop. They often traveled and performed as a group, causing great joy whenever they got together. The group formed in the mid-1950s, but the name didn't really catch on at first, until after the passing of Bogart in 1957. In truth, it was in the 1960s when the group really become popular, especially in Las Vegas when the trio of Sinatra, Davis, and Martin would pack in the crowds for their performances. They became known for their loose style. I will begin with the 'Chairman of the Board'. I love listening to Frank Sinatra sing his many hits, and "Fly Me To The Moon", written in 1954 by Bart Howard, was definitely one of them. While it was sung by many, it is Sinatra's version that is mostly remembered.

I remember growing up and my parents watching 'The Dean Martin Show', and seeing him on this show, and never seeming to be without a drink and a cigarette in his hand. I instantly get a warm feeling when I hear his voice, especially when he is singing. In 1965, Dean had a bit hit with a song written by Russ Morgan, Larry Stock, and James Cavanaugh. Sometimes, it feels as though "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" was written for Martin, but it wasn't. His version, some 20 years after the song was written, went to #24 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #1 on the adult contemporary chart.

I remember seeing Sammy Davis, Jr. appearing on many variety shows, from Dean's show, to 'The Mike Douglas Show'. My mother loved watching those progams, and I can remember seeing one of the few black men I remember seeing regularly performing. Sammy's easy style, never seeming to be trying too hard, but never short-changing the people in the audience, was hard not to love. I hope you enjoy as Sammy sings "That Old Black Magic", the classic song written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer.

And, finally,I thought I would bring them all together for you, and you alone. In the next clip, Sammy, Frank, and Dean singing "Birth of the Blues". The song had music by Ray Henderson, the lyrics by Buddy G. DeSylva and Lew Brown. It was nominated fro an Academy Award for the 1941 debut in 'Birth of the Blues', a film starring Bing Crosby 15 years after the song was first published. The Rat Pack made it famous all over again when they started to perform it in the 1960s. In the following clip, the boys were joined on stage by a very young Johnny Carson.

I hope they have reunited up in heaven, and are singing to all the fathers there this weekend!

Liza Minnelli • Easy

While trying to brainstorm what I was going to post for this fine Saturday morning, I was at a loss a bit. I just couldn't decide, with a bunch of ideas floating through my brain. But one I remembered the inspiration for the Saturday morning posts, I knew the direction I needed to take. You see, a long time ago, I was trying to figure out this whole blogging thing, and I thought it would be oh-so-clever if I were to post Liza Minnelli singing "Come Saturday Morning", originally on the soundtrack to Liza's film, 'The Sterile Cuckoo'. So I went back to dear Liza, and thought about going to see her in 'The Act' while still in high school, something that sealed my fate as her fan since. In fact, I still have my show program from the show, which tells you something. After seeing that show, I went out to purchase the latest from Liza, which turned out to be the odd album, 'Tropical Nights'. I say add, for it is an odd combination of Funk and Disco, some of which really works, and some did not. I was particularly fond of the song 'Easy', written by Jim Grady, who was also credited as 'Arranger, Composer, Concept, Piano, Piano (Electric), String Arrangements, and Vocals' for the album.

See, it really was a sweet song. I also find her medley of the title cut and "Bali Ha'i" to be something special, and one of the times on the album her voice is allowed to soar. Now, I am very happy to have this album in my collection, I can't say I would heartily recommend it to someone looking for some great Liza. There is a great wealth from which to choose, and I would go for one of the greatest hits collection. With that in mind, I would suggest anyone in the mood to buy the 'Ultimate Collection: Liza Minnelli' on iTunes and Amazon.

Date Night - En Forelskelse (Awakening)

Tonight, for my 'Date Night' showing, I bring you a really beautiful short film, 'En Forelskelse', or 'Awakening' in English. This Danish film was released in 2008, written & directed by Christian Tafdrup. It stars Allan Hyde, Lars Brygmann, and Julie Grundtvig Wester. It was the following year American audiences got to know and fall just a little bit in love with Hyde, when played the beautiful Godrick on 'True Blood'. Before we touch on 'En Forelskelse', I thought it might be nice watch a trailer for another movie you might want to check out sometime in the near future. This is a peak at '3-Day Weekend', written and directed by Rob Williams.

Now back to the task at hand. In this film, Allan Hyde plays 16-year-old Carsten, who recently started dating Melissa, played by Julie Grundtvig Wester. Things seem to be going smoothly for the couple, who even enjoy spending time Melissa's parents, played by Lars Brygmann and Ellen Hillingsø. But there is one moment in which so much changes, and Carsten truly begins to learn about himself. 'En Forelskelse' runs just under 39 minutes, and has English subtitles.

'En Forelskelse' was the winner of the Robert Award for Best Feature Film - Fiction/Animation in 2009. The Robert Awards are the Danish equivalent of the Academy Awards. The award was well-deserved, as the film told the story of a young man coming of age with a light touch, allowing the story to have a more organic feel. The the performances are all strong, but particularly those by Hyde and Brygmann. They told so much of the story in the quiet moments, and kept my attention to the end. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Scandocious J.R. • The Boy That I Like (Don't Like Me Back)

It is Friday morning, and many will be getting ready to take advantage of your weekend off from work, so I thought I would bring a little something to the table to get your weekend off a little early. So today I offer you "The Boy That I Like (Don't Like Me Back)" the latest by Scandocious J.r., aka 'The King of Gay Music'. The Chicago native has been making out and proud Hip-Hop music for a while, and just always seems to up his game. This song if from the up coming album 'Secrets of the King', and I am certainly looking forward to learning some of J.R.'s secrets. Out In The Rain • Out Artists Singing About Weather

It was all over the television, there was a big storm coming to the area. According to both local newcasts and 'The Weather Channel', this was going to be a quick by hard storm. There were reports of the dark clouds coming in, and making it seem more like night than day. High winds and heavy rains would make it seem more like a monsoon than a spring shower, so they said. Soon the thunder and lightening could be heard in the distance, and some dark clouds came rolling in. It turned the day gray, not quite the darkness we expected. The wind blew a bit, but not enough to send the sheets of rain that followed too far. And just as quickly as it come in, it moved on through. The sky to the East showed the effects of lightning, flashing more dimly as the sound of moved further and further away.

With the storm gone, it left a glistening sheen on the plants, and puddles on the driveway with the occasional ripples from the drops off the trees. The birds came out, looking to eat, flying from one spot to another to check for worms and insects. Life was quickly back to normal. But it lasted long enough to make me think of songs about rain, some you might be familiar with, others refreshingly new. The first is a song by Darren Ockert, from his album 'Anything Is Possible'. There is a wonderful feel to the song, the sound of rain made in musical form. Enjoy "Out of the Rain" by Darren Ockert.

The next song has a beauty that is stunning in conjunction with the description of Manhattan's 8th Avenue. This is a very different rain than what I just experienced on the farm, but one I do remember from the decade I spent living in New York City. Dudley Saunder's evocative and intoxicating "The Rain on 8th Avenue" just fills me up like few songs could.

Above you will see some screen grabs from the latest music video from Vanilla Lush (the blond), Vicki Vivacious (the brunette), and Maddison Lee (the redhead), better known collectively as The Supreme Fabulettes. Their single, "A Drag Queen Is A Cowboy's Best Friend", was written by Boy George, and he also directed the music video. As you can see, The ladies are joined in the music video by several handsome men, including the adorable Johnny Hazzard. The song is just a delight, at least for me. I hope you enjoy "A Drag Queen Is A Cowboy's Best Friend".

The Voice Season 4 • Top 5 Perform

Alas, my dears, I was not around last week, as Bryce needed some assistance to celebrate his 5th birthday. That means the last time I recapped, it was the Top 8 performing. During the results show, we learned that Sarah Simmons and Judith Hill were sent home. I was truly surprised by Judith's dismissal, for I felt she showed true talent during her performances. Last week, the Top 6 performed two songs each, one picked by the coach and the other by the artist, and when all was said and done, it was Holly Tucker who left the show. That means we are down to the final five artists, including the only remaining men, The Swon Brothers, who are also the only group to make it to the semifinals, so each week they are making Voice history. So far, all four coaches are still in the game, with Shakira, Usher, and Adam Levine with one artist, and Blake with two still going for the win. There are three Country artists, and two Pop singers remaining, and it is just a matter of weeks until we learn which the public will prefer this year. Who is your favorite?

Carson Daly tells us that for the first time ever, the top 5 were sent home to visit their friends and families. And there will only be three performing in the finale next week, so tomorrow night, we will see two acts going home. And even in the best of circumstances, one judge will not be joining the others in the finals. And if Blake has his way, maybe even two. Then Carson introduces Usher, who sings "Twisted". They are dedicating their performance to friends back in Oklahoma, and they will sing Bob Seger's wonderful "Turn The Page". They are sounding great, and Zach in great voice. It was intense and strong, just what the boys needed. Usher thought they were fantastic, and set the bar high for tonight. Adam loved it, and is so glad they dedicated the song to the musicians back home. Blake is quite proud, and feels they continue to get better and grow as artists. After what feels like a long break, Christina Milian talks to Danielle Bradbery & Amber Carrington. She has a message for Danielle from Tim McGraw, wishing her good luck when she sings his song tonight! Not to be outdone, Adam arranged for another message, when Katy Perry wishes Amber the best of luck singing her personal favorite, "Firework". Both girls are thrilled and excited. Carson introduces the next artist we see, Sasha Allen, who will be singing "I Will Always Love You", which she dedicates to her son and daughter. Whitney Houston has always been an inspiration for her, and this song has extra meaning.

She does a lovely and restrained version of the song, a much more intimate and personal feeling. She certainly sings it her own way, not imitating anyone. It is gorgeous, really, and so heart-warming. Adam is impressed by her, knowing the iconic nature of the song. And he loves that she not only sang it her own way, she also sounded amazing doing it. Usher thought it was amazing, and thinks that voice will keep her in the competition. Shakira is so very proud of her, for Sasha gave a wonderful performance. Shakira's mother has been telling her Sasha should sing Whitney, and this proves she was right. After a break, we visit Amherst, Massachusetts, on her home visit. She sees friends and family and her old job. She has an interview on the radio, and sings 'God Bless America' at Fenway Park! For her first song of the night, she sings "Clarity" by Zedd, the German electronic Dance musician/producer. She sounds great, although it wasn't her strongest so far. Adam just loves her, but feels that is he says that every week - cause it's true. Blake wishes she would stumble, but she never does. Usher is so proud, for she is so consistently good. He is so glad to be her coach. Danielle comes out next to sing her first of the night. But first, we see her trip home to Houston, Texas. She has a large family greeting, and heads over to her high school. There she learns she will be singing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros game. Tonight, she will be singing "Please Remember Me", written by the Country songwriters Rodney Crowell and Will Jennings. Here is the most recent version, sung by Tim McGraw.

She does a great job, showing nice vocal control. I felt it lacked a bit of emotional content. I know she is just 16-years-old, but I would just like to feel more on a song like this. Usher calls her performance "amazeballs", telling her how impressed he is by her poise and grace. Adam agrees, and talks about the performance being so very technically proficient. Blake loves her, and how she never takes a wrong step with her notes. He loves every note she sings. After the break, it is time for Amber, the last to sing her first of the night. She will be singing "Firework" by Katy Perry. She dedicates the song to her best friends back in Texas. The beginning is a bit low, showing a weakness in her range. But once the song picks up, she is bold and strong, and even outstanding at times. It is nice to hear her put a bit of Country in her Pop diva. Blake is impressed, and calls the power of her voice 'Phenomenal'. But he wants her to sing more Country! Shakira knows that is a tough song, but thinks she did very well. Adam admits it is a tough one, but thinks it is the best he has heard the song sound. And he loves that she can sing Pop, and Country, and embraces the fact she doesn't fit in just one place, she defines her own. After a break, we see The Swon Brothers returning home to Oklahoma. Colton and his Grandmother were adorable. They visit the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, where they used to work. They are surprised to learn they have been named the Rising Star of 2013, complete with a welcome message by Vince Gill! They have a sold out show in their hometown, truly energizing them for the show. They sing "Danny's Song" by Kenny Loggins, a true classic from his Loggins & Messina days.

They have such a natural sense of harmony, this is really beautiful. The harmonics of the song seem tailor-made for them. This was simple, beautiful, and breath-taking. I am not sure it will save them, but it certainly showed their strength. Usher thought it was another great performance from the boys, and loves how they made Country music so accessible for him. Adam says this is one of his favorite songs, remembering how he learned to sing to the original Loggins & Messina single. He just loves what the boys do, even if this is one of the few songs he already knew! Blake points out he learned from the Ann Murray version, and Adam is lost again. Blake is so proud of them, and thinks this was a great week for them. Next up, we return home to New York City for Sasha Allen, and how she surprises her daughter after school. She also has a radio interview, and then goes on to sing at the Village Underground, where the artists show up to support one of their own. She then takes on her second diva of the night, for she is singing "Bad Girls" by the late, great Donna Summer. She sounds amazing on this, updating the sound with a new and vital vocal. The audience goes wild, the best response from them so far. Adam loved it, and thinks she was great. Usher, who gave her a standing ovation, loved it, and thought it offered a wonderful tribute to Summer. Shakira is so proud, and mentions that "Bad Girls" was the first record she purchased. After an excessively long preview of the new film starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, it is time for Danielle Bradbery, who will be singing "Who I Am", a song recorded by American country music artist Jessica Andrews.

This is a great song for her, allowing for her youth and ups the cute factor. While singing, she goes out to her family, and singes to her parents. There is a sweetness factor that can't be missed. Usher loved it, and thought she was incredible. Shakira loved it, and thinks she will be able to say "I knew her when..." Blake thinks she is a superstar, and predicts big things for her. After yet another break, it is time for Amber Carrington, who will be singing "Sad", written by her coach and James Valentine, and performed by their band, Maroon 5. But first, we see her visiting home in Texas, and her sisters are just adorable. She sounded relaxed for the radio interview, and excited to visit the boutique where she used to work. She visits with her late mother's parents, a touching moment. Then she heads to the Riverfront to give a concert, where there was no standing room to be had! Back to the show, she sings this really beautiful song, and it sits wonderfully in her register. Her emotional connection is wonderful, and it brought a tear to my eye. Blake loved it, and thinks she hasn't gotten the recognition for her emotional performances, always there. Usher congratulated her for making it this far, and thought her performance was fantastic. Adam is so proud, for he wrote the song with Valentine, recorded it, and he just saw her make it sound so much better than he ever could. He loves her, and couldn't be any happier. After a break, we come back to hear Michelle Chamuel sings a song written by Tony Award-winner Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman, of the great band, The Hooters. She dedicates her performance of "Time After Time" to her coach, Usher. Here is Cyndi's iconic version.

Michelle, who had a big moment with Cyndi's "True Colors" in the Top 16 performances, hopes to repeat history tonight. I hate to say it, but this one didn't work as well for me. I think she is incredible, and I love her, but this one got a bit lost in the process for me. She was always on key, never straying. But something was lacking. Shakira loved it and her, and says she is "in permanent crescendo". Adam says he loves her once again. Usher is moved she dedicated the song to him, and thinks she is the winner. Carson breaks in, and quickly signs off, as they are running tight on time. Before the show started, I figured The Swon Brothers would be most likely going home, but now I am not so sure. They had a great night, and I think they proved they have something to give to this competition. But no one really made a mistake, although there were a few stumbles. It wasn't the strongest night for Danielle, nor for Amber. We shall see if it comes down to Country artists, or if Sasha and Michelle will be fighting for your votes to stay for the finals. Dark Monday • Begin The Beguine

In 1935, a brand new musical with a book by Moss Hart and music and lyrics by Cole Porter. 'Jubilee' was greeted with outstanding reviews, and some still consider it the best show of the 1930s. However, opening on Broadway during the Great Depression made nothing a sure bet, and the show ran only 169 performances, less than 6 months. The show had a song introduced by June Knight that certainly had a great impact. "Begin The Beguine" is a beautiful and romantic song, talking about love unfolding. 'The Beguine' is a dance where the couple dances very close, and the song examines the time when the dance is just beginning, and you feel a chemistry that cannot be denied. The song was also used in 'Broadway Melody of 1940', used as an instrumental as Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell tap danced an amazing routine. Enjoy as Fred and Eleanor dance to "Begin The Beguine".

But I must remind you that the song definitely has lyrics, and they are beautiful. Truthfully, everything about the song is amazing, from lyrics to music. At the base of the song there is this wonderful hope, an inherent belief that something wonderful was about to happen. In 1939, the song was recorded by singer Tony Martin, and released by Decca Records. I think his vocals are just about perfect, and so I gladly will share them with you now.

One hundred and twenty-two years ago, a boy was born in Peru, Indiana. Cole Albert Porter was born to a wealthy family, a family that did not love the idea that the young man decided to embark on a career in music. I guess they didn't really understand he was going to be one of the top songwriters of the first half of the Twentieth Century, with shows on Broadway as well as movie musicals making his songs quite popular. To celebrate his birthday, I thought I would pick some of my favorite singers taking on his fantastic music. And I will being with the ever-so-handsome and talented John Barrowman. In 2004, John put out an exceptional album 'John Barrowman Swings Cole Porter', and it still love it. Barrowman first came to the attention of many in a revival of 'Anything Goes', with music and lyrics of Porter. But I decided to pick one of my favorites from the album.So here is John Barrowman singing "Ca, C'est L'Amour".

Well, it is tough to think of doing this post and not including the brilliant kd lang. She has recorded several of his songs, and each and every one has been a gem in it's own right. I mean, come on, her "Miss Chatelaine" is amazing, and her "So In Love" is haunting. But I discovered her version of "Love For Sale" while doing this post, and I have to say, I love it! Apparently, she recorded it for the 2006 movie 'The Black Dahlia', playing in a scene in a gay bar. My God, her voice is just amazing. Enjoy as kd lang sings "Love For Sale".

I have always had a bit of a thing for the very talented and ofter overlooked Anita O'Day. I just love her style, and the quality of her voice. And forty-five years before Barrowman released his album, Anita released an album titled 'Anita O'Day Swings Cole Porter', a wonderful collection of wonderful songs all given amazing treatment by this wonderful talent. With 24 songs from which to choose, I really couldn't decide. But then I remembered her version of "What Is This Thing Called Love", and I knew it had to be included.

Finally, I thought I would end the post with a song off the 1990 tribute album, 'Red Hot + Blue: A Tribute To Cole Porter'. Many of the biggest and brightest names in music joined in to be a part of the CD, and the money went to AIDS charities. It was the first time the music industry took a stand about the AIDS crisis, and it was incredibly successful, selling over a million copies. One of my favorite tracks was by the always amazing Jimmy Somerville, who sing "From This Moment On". Enjoy!

The Big Hits of 1923

When I was thinking about this Saturday night post, I decided I would deviate from the normal Torch-inspired songs and just go back in time. Randomly, I told myself 90 years, and went off to see what was all the rage in 1923. There was plenty of great music from which to choose, and I had fun listening and making up my mind. While I loved songs like "The Charleston", which brought no a dance craze, I went with four others that were popular, fun, or a little of both. And I will start with Wendell Hall, a man of many talents. He was an American country singer, vaudeville artist, songwriter, pioneer radio performer, Victor recording artist and ukulele player. While he became known for his interpretations of Stephen Foster Classics, I decided to go with his recording of "It Ain't Gonna Rain No Mo'" from 1923. Not only did he write and sing the song, Wendell also played the ukelele! Here is "It Ain't Gonna Rain No Mo'".

Bandleader Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra where known for being one of the most popular dance bands of the 1920s, it was also had to miss their recordings of of Pop and Jazz standards. During the 1920s and 1930s, many applauded his Jazz recordings, although later some questioned if he was doing little more that reinterpreting Jazz in a Pop format. However, in his autobiography, legendary Jazz great Duke Ellington said, "Paul Whiteman was known as the King of Jazz, and no one as yet has come near carrying that title with more certainty and dignity." Here I offer you his 1923 recording of "Felix The Cat", a composition by Alfred Bryan, Pete Wendling and Max Cortlander, inspired by the popular cartoon cat of the time. On the recording Skin Young handles the vocals.

The next song is not only a great one, it is also a rarity for the time. You see, it is a song written by two legendary Jazz ladies, and sung by another one! "Down Hearted Blues" was written by Alberta Hunter and Lovie Austin, both of whom had strong careers on their own. And it was sung by the then unknown singer by the name of Miss Bessie Smith. Of course, Bessie would go on to become an icon in Jazz and Blues, but was just beginning her recording career. Smith, had previously made a name for herself in vaudeville as a dancer, but was on her way to becoming one of the most popular singers of the time. And it all started with great recordings like "Down Hearted Blues".

When it comes to novelty songs, most disappear from your memory 10 minutes after first hearing them. However, there are some that live on way longer than anyone could have predicted. But there are a few that become a part of the Zeitgeist, and you can find yourself singing them at the oddest times. I cannot tell you the first time I heard the song "Yes, We Have No Bananas", nor could I even come close to remembering the circumstances. But I can tell you that I have sung the title and/or the chorus on many an occasion, both sober and not so sober. Perhaps I heard it in a cartoon, or maybe it was my parents singing it. The song was written by Frank Silver and Irving Cohn for the 1922 Broadway revue 'Make It Snappy', featuring the talents of Eddie Cantor. The song was sung by many people and went to #1 on the music charts in 1923, and stayed there for five weeks! Here is the recording of Eddie Cantor singing "Yes, We Have No Bananas".

The Shirelles • Will You Love Me Tomorrow?

In 1960, The Shirelles had a huge hit with a song written by the husband and wife team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King. When "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, it became the first song to top the charts by a 'girl group'. It was the first of several hits for the group, made up by Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie 'Mickie' Harris, and Beverly Lee. Since then, it has been recorded by far too many to list, including by King herself, when it was part of her iconic album, 'Tapestry'. But first, it was The Shirelles that brought to song to the world, so enjoy them singing "Will You Love Me Tomorrow".

Date Night: 'Ask Again Later' & 'After'

For date night, I thought I would take a look at relationships from a different perspective. Both films in tonight's Double Feature were released in in the new millennium. Added together, both take less than 25 minutes to tell their stories. I will start with 'Ask Again Later', a 2009 Australian short film by writer/director Jessica Smith. The film centers on the anniversary of Kate and Holly, and how both are planning a surprise for their lover. When plans go awry for both, how will they rebound?

This seems like a great time to take a break, and hear from our (non)sponsors. While Pepsi offers no money to this blog at all, I do have to hand it to them for creating this ad, even if the advertisement never made it to television. It was created and produced to run on television in the United Kingdom, but was shelved due to fears that it promoted the 'homosexual lifestyle'. Like watching the 58 second commercial will suddenly have straight young men and women running for a gay lover!

After that break, and before you hit play for the next film, it might be a great time for you to take a bathroom break, or refill your beverage. Since you are more than likely watching this from home, you can drink as much as you like! Now, our second 'feature' of date night, 'After'!

'After' was written and directed by Mark Pariselli, but was inspired by the poem 'after school, street football, eighth grade' by Dennis Cooper. The 2009 short takes a look three young friends sitting on the porch with their books in their laps, being distracted by the jocks playing football across the street. When the ball gets loose on the front yard, the thoughts of the geeky trio wonders as well.

Rowsy Bosch featuring Jeb Havens • "Turn Me On" & Others

I decided it would be a wonderful idea to lead off the weekend with some music I only recently discovered. First I found the music of Jeb Havens while cruising around on YouTube, and was intrigued. Then I also came across the music billed as Rowsy Bosch featuring Jeb Havens, and I have to say, I really loved it. With a minimal about of diligent research, I found out Rowsy Bosch featuring Jeb Havens is a collaboration between San Fransisco-based artists Jeb Havens and Oliver Voigt. Voigt was making music in his native Germany in the 1990s, writing and producing Pop all over Europe. After he relocated to California, he wanted to make music again, and was soon working with Havens, the gay singer/songwriter starting to make a name for himself as a solo artist. The ElectroPop the pair make is a far stretch from the piano-driven music of Havens. It is something rather wonderful, as you will soon hear for yourself.

I will begin with a new song from the duo, "Turn Me On". You can listen below to the official lyric video. The song starts off with a piano and Jeb's voice, but soon the production kicks in, and the song is driven by the electronic sounds of the synthesizer, and Havens' distinctive vocals. There is a breathy quality to his voice, but it retains a fullness that is intoxicating. This is "Turn Me On" by Rowsy Bosch featuring Jeb Havens.

The first official video from the collection was for the song "Take Me Back". This song sounds more like Havens' solo work, but one can certainly hear the influence of Oliver in it. And it is impossible to miss just how much the camera loves the handsome and sexy Jeb. Enjoy the music video for "Take Me Back".

"Take Me Back" was the third cut off the EP. "Strange Kind of Sadness" was the first cut off the release. It begins with the Electronic sounds that belies the instant intimate contact made by Havens. The song takes a look at the full range of emotions that can be found in anyone in in the midst of a relationship. From the magic to the sadness, Jeb brings them all to us.

Matt Fishel • "When Boy Meets Boy" Music Video

There must be an animation proclamation that I missed, for this is the second amazing animated video for a new song that I've not only seen, but loved! Now, both have started out with a great base - a brilliant song. That is most certainly the case with Matt Fishel's "When Boy Meets Boy", the latest from Fishel, featured on his album 'Not Thinking Straight'. The song, a cute and saucy look back at young love and the silly things that have charmed us all so, is a perfect starting point for this video. It allows the young members of the LGBT community to see themselves in the characters, for I have often thought the strength needed to come out should qualify for at least a cameo as a comic book hero. So it is even more special to be able to bask in the glow with the boys, so young, fresh, and bold, not letting the outside word interfere with their living and loving as they do.

I can't help it, this song makes me smile when I hear it, and seeing it in video form only makes me love it even more. You can purchase 'Not Thinking Straight' from iTunes and Amazon. Eric Himan Releases "Red Hot Tears"

Singer/songwriter Eric Himan has released a new single in preparation for the release of the highly anticipated 'Gracefully' album scheduled to drop in a few weeks. "Red Hot Tears" is a beautifully produced Pop song written by the talented musician. The song is a great combination of the driven Pop infused with the soulful vocals few can deliver like Eric. Like much of Himan's work, there is an unmistakable honesty present, the first cut on 'Gracefully'. This is the project for which Himan launched a successful crowdfunding campaign, and the faith so many held in Himan is now paying off. The album was made available to them electronically, and as someone who has heard it, all I can say is "WOW"! I can't wait for everyone to hear it. The album is named for Himan's grandmother, Grace Himan, who had a strong hand in his youth. She past away last year, but Eric still feels a strong tie to her, for she always encouraged the young man to be involved in the arts. In many ways, I guess I have Grace to thanks for so many years of excellent music.

Chris Salvatore • I Want Your Sex

Whenever a handsome young man serenades me with "I Want Your Sex", I have to admit he has my attention. And when that young man is Chris Salvatore, I am definitely listening. So when I saw on Twitter that Chris had released a cover of George Michael's "I Want Your Sex", released almost exactly 26 years ago. It was the first single off the 'Faith' album, and the video included his then-girlfriend, Kathy Jeung. It would be 11 years before George would come out of the closet, following the arrest in the Beverly Hills park restroom.

There is no issue with Salvatore, who has been out and proud for his entire career. And I am a big fan, and not just of his pretty face. "I Want Your Sex" originally was part of the 2010 collection, 'The Sound of This Beat'. That album was a sweet combination of Electronica and Pop with some strong Rock influences. His take on the George Michael classic is an Electronica gem, sexy and modern, not bothering with the faux coyness of the original. Happy Birthday, Skott Freedman!

Today is the birthday of the talented musician, Skott Freedman. In getting this post together, I came to realize I have been a fan of Skott's music for longer than I have realized. It all came out when I came across his cover of "Walking In Memphis", by Marc Cohn. The song appeared on his 2003 release, 'Some Company'. As I am want to do, I found the album on CD Baby, and purchased it, along with his 2001 album, 'Anything Worth Mentioning'. Once they arrived, I played them, and instantly was blown away by this man, and his amazing talent. I swear, I would be able to listen to an instrumental album of Freedman playing the piano, it was so damn good. I swear, after listening, I put the CD player on repeat, and just was bathing in his music. The piano-driven music was lush, and ranged from sweet to intense. He had me from the first bar to the last.

So today is Skott's birthday, and to celebrate the day, I thought I would post a little retrospective of his music. I will start with the title song off his second album, 'Some Company'. The song has a great energy, combining a youthful swagger to a base of raw emotion. The piano has such a high-octane pace, and yet his vocals kept up with it, carrying us on the journey that went from hurt to joy, to dreams that allow you to bargain with God and be a better person. Enjoy the song"Some Company", written and performed by Skott Freedman.

But there was also a slower, softer side to Freedman's music. When I first heard "Do You" from his album 'Anything Worth Mentioning', I was so very touched. There was such a great honesty Skott brings to the song, and a beautifully soulful quality. This is only highlighted by stunning guest vocal by Kristin Cifelli. Listen to "Do You", and hear a different side of Freedman.

Now to return to his 2003 release, there is a stunning song that offered a message that was years ahead of time. "Until That Time", off 'Some Company', is basically telling people going through a tough time that things do, indeed, get better. If you are hurting today, or if you feel lonely, and don't quite feel as though you have the strength, look to your friend to lend a shoulder for you to rest, and regain your strength. I just adore this song.

Since I was already a fan, by the time he released 'Judge A Book' in 2005, I needed to get it right away. The album was a collection of songs chosen by votes from the fans, giving Freedman the opportunity to do some great arrangements for this cover album. He also did a few duets, all quite enjoyable. I will admit that I somehow managed to miss the release of his next album, The Cottage Sessions.' It came out in the fall of 2009, and I didn't realize it for about a month. What amazed me most was that I knew it was coming, because I had purchased the first single from the album a few months before, a cover of "Zombie" by The Cranberries. This song was a perfect match for his voice, and I loved it.

In 2010, Skott recorded the title track from a compilation album for charity. "I Hear On The Streets", from the album 'I Hear On The Streets', looked to raise money to benefit New Alternatives for LGBT Homeless Youth in NYC. The song was written by Emily Nyman, Lynn Berry, and Thomas Raniszewski. The song was dedicated to Jimmy Wheeler, a young man who took his life as the result of bullying. The song is really beautiful.

Summer Torch

It is June 1, when the summer season really starts to kick off. I know the recent spell of warm weather drove that point home here, and I sure I am not the only one thing of summer vacations. I bet there are plenty of kids eager to be done with school for a few months, and some parents trying to figure out what do do with those same kids. Well, you know what I suggest, don't you? Break out some great music and teach your kids something about the music of the past and present, to insure there will be plenty of music in the future! The first step on that education could be some amazing ladies singing about summer, starting with the beautiful Norah Jones. Her voice and style are so distinctive, I really enjoy it when she takes on the classics. Here is Norah singing "Summertime", composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera 'Porgy and Bess'. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward, the author of the novel 'Porgy' on which the opera was based, although the song is also co-credited to Ira Gershwin. While the great Billie Holiday might be the version most people know, I do like this one as well. Here is Norah Jones singing "Summertime".

Next up we have a beautiful song written by Johnny Mercer, Michel Legrand, Eddie Barclay and Eddy Marnay. Carmen McRae recorded "Once Upon A Summertime" for her 1965 album, 'Second To None'. It was originally recorded by Blossom Dearie in 1958, but there were many more who followed. Please enjoy this version, sung by the Carmen McRae, whose gorgeous voice is just perfect for "Once Upon A Summertime".

I know that Teresa Brewer was more well known as a Pop singer in the 1950s, with songs like "Music! Music! Music!" and "Till I Waltz Again With You". But in the 1960s, she picked her songs from a more classic reservoir, including the Great American Songbook. And in 1963, she recorded "I Guess I'll Go Back Home This Summer", written by Willard Robison and Ray Mayer, for her album, 'Moments to Remember'. It is a beautiful ballad, and I hope you enjoy it.

And, finally, I had to bring the magnificent Julie London to this weekends party. I just love her, and this song is not different. Here Julie sings "Theme from A Summer Place", a song with lyrics by Mack Discant and music by Max Steiner, written for the 1959 film, 'A Summer Place', which starred matinee idols Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue. While the best known version would be the Lite-FM version by Percy Faith, I think this one more than does the trick. So let's not waste anymore time and just get to Julie London singing "Theme From A Summer Place".
