A COOL BOOK PROJECT

Every so often I get a little book project to work on. Anything multipage, where things have to flow from one page to the next is my absolute favorite kind of work, so I am excited to share this with you.

This project is a series of 3 books with stories that are being republished by Bókabeitan. Bókabeitan is a progressive new publishing house, founded by Marta Hlín Magnadóttir and Birgitta Elín Hassell. Their goal is to promote reading for children, teens and young adults by publishing carefully crafted quality books.

The stories were all first published between the years of 1949 and 1968. Puti í kexinu and Strandið í ánni were books that had been published before and Krummahöllin was a story published first in an Icelandic Youth Magazine called Æskan (or Youth). The two first books have original illustrations by Sigrid Valtingojer and the stories are all by Björn Daníelsson who was a principal at a children's school in Sauðárkrókur with a passion for teaching children to read, through interesting stories.

For the two first books we only had the original books and scans to work with so it took some time cleaning up all the old illustrations and I had to rework the covers in order to give them a coherent look. My favorite collaborator, Linda Ólafsdóttir, illustrates the third story. She and I recently worked on some Icelandic stamps together, a project that we started a year ago and will have it's second round of stamps coming out this spring. Her drawings are so intricate and beautiful and she has such a great instinct for illustrating stories. She and her drawings are such a treat to work with.

It was a really great project and I am really proud being part of this series of children's books. They just came from the printer and are on their way to the bookstores today. Make sure to check them out in one of the local bookstores in Reykjavik, Iceland. Enjoy!

Well ok, maybe a little too late. But, hey!

I could go on and on about why I haven't blogged in so long but I believe that it wouldn't do anyone any good. All I can say is that I got the urge again and hopefully it will stick with me for a while.

I read a great blog post by a dear friend - Linda Ólafsdóttir where she says: "... even though I'd be the only one reading it, (her blog post that is) I felt like it kind of put my work in perspective, for myself!" Something about that clicked for me. That's what this is! Ah!

You are documenting your likes (sometimes dislikes), your inspirations, your hopes and I have used it in the past as a tool to keep me writing and keep me learning about new things and documenting my finds. I have truly missed that and so that is why I am back! I have no plans as to when I will update, nothing scheduled, and I am going to try and just go with the flow and scratch that itch when it comes to me.

With that, I really wanted to share with you the Christmas gifts we created for this year. We are always trying to find fun ways to document the kids and give our families back home in Iceland something fun and different that still gives them a glimpse into our little lives here in L.A.

If you are constantly looking for inspirations online, like me, I am sure that the amazingly beautiful print company Artifact Uprising hasn't passed you by. If you haven't discovered it yet - you are truly in for a treat. They offer all kinds of services to create beautiful printed pieces - their niche being that you can upload directly from you instagram account - and create printed books and pieces with your instagram photos. Recently they created an app so you can actually upload right from your phone. I haven't done that yet, but I see that coming in the future for sure, especially after creating these calendars for Christmas.

I am so incredibly happy with the way they turned out. The Artifact Uprising team takes care of everything. The wooden magnetic clipboard, the template for the calendar days, and the beautifully printed pieces delivered right to your doorstep. Super easy!

We only had to provide the images, and that was the fun part. We took the boys out early in November and shot them playing around in the park. Ingo took the photos, of course, and created this amazing filter that looks a bit like the vscocam filters. So, beautiful and I pulled the images together, designed a little heading and created a little story giving each boy a month to shine.

(By the way if you haven't discovered the vscocam app - oh boy, is that a treat and conversation for a whole new blog post.)

Hello there my dear friends. It's been a while!

Life, work, kids & teaching at the Dailey Method have been keeping me busy these past months and I am trying to work out how to keep blogging alongside everything else. I will get there - it just all takes a bit of time.

You have probable noticed that the latest issue of Home & Delicious is out and oh, is this a good one. Packed with interesting Icelandic Design and Designers (Iceland recently had it's DesingMarch event), home visits, recipes and as before you can find a DIY by my husband and me. Take a look! If you happened to miss all the announcements on facebook this morning about the latest issue of Home & Delicious being out - then please check out the Holiday Issue. As before it is filled with gorgeous photography, beautiful homes, and oh so yummy recipes. There is also a great interview with the Dutch stylist AnoukB & an interview with my Bay Area neighbor Victoria Smith of sfgirlbybay. I love reading the interviews that Halla Bára curates in the magazine. It is always so interesting to hear a bit more about all the bloggers that you follow, so closely, and get a little insight into their life, outside of blogging.

And of course as always, I have a new set of wallpapers for you to decorate your mobile phones. This time around I created some fun patterns that I used to make stars for our chapter openers and thought it would be nice to offer both of the ideas to you.

I just found out through Mode et Maison that you might be able to get your hands on one of these, but you will need to visit the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and they will sell you a copy. They do not sell them in their online shop. I also just saw one that went for about $80 on Ebay, so perhaps there is still hope to find a copy somewhere in cyberspace.

I have always wanted to visit Stockholm though. Hmmm.

READY FOR WINTER?

I am so incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by many talented an amazing people and I just love that they are my constant source of inspirations and are so full of life, humor and ambition. These here are the latest creation of my friend Heiða Eiríksdóttir. Aren't they just to die for! Heiða is a fashion designer and lives in Iceland and is one of the most positive and efficient people I know. Never backing down from a challenge and always finding new ways to create amazing things.

You can find more of her mittens or as she calls them in Icelandic "dúlludúskar" for sale on her facebook page.

I just love going out in the cold with a huge and cozy scarf, a cool hat and some gorgeous mittens. I miss you Iceland... mostly for the winter fashion and maybe a smidge for the snow.

It's here!

The second issue of Home & Delicious magazine is hot of the presses (or hot uploaded to 3D Issue) YAY!

This issue is full of so many great things. Fun ideas for the home and of course a DIY by yours truly. Ingo and I went to visit Green String Farm here in Petaluma as well and got to hear all about their farm. Ingo took some amazing photos and I created a yummy lunch menu inspired by some Green String produce. You will also find some gorgeous home visits, interesting interviews and savory recipes.

We have been working away on the second issue of Home & Delicious for the past few weeks and are all set to publish next week. This one will be filled with so many cool things to do, to make and to eat. The homes visited in this issue are gorgeous and I can't wait to hear what you all think of it. A LITTLE BREAK FROM THE BLOG

I had made a promise to myself when I moved to Petaluma that I wouldn't get too isolated. It's easy when you have your work, your little family and your blog to think of, to not reach out to other people, and forget that being social and getting to know others around you is important. So, since I am pretty good at being on my own and missing out on the social scene I came up with a plan.

An this was the plan: Figure out how I could get more involved with a studio (somewhere in the Petaluma area) where they teach The Dailey Method.

Say what!?!

Yes. When living in Oakland my dear friend and fellow Icelander, Kristín, took me one day to this exercise studio called The Dailey Method. It is a system of strengthening and stretching all the major muscle groups in the body. It combines ballet barre work, core conditioning, yoga, and orthopedic exercises. And it is the most fun, hard working & effective exercise system I have ever done. I completely fell in love with it and I believe Kristín and I went together every chance we had after that. It was so great to get out of the house, take a break from work and just go, work your ass off and socialize with like minded people (mostly women) as well.

Of course when we decided to move to Petaluma I checked to see if there was a studio here, but no such luck, so soon after I had my youngest last year, I contacted the original studio in Corte Madera and asked if they could give me any guidelines as to how I could get involved with a Studio. Soon after I was contacted my a woman who is opening up a Studio in Santa Rosa. YAY! And she was looking for teachers. We talked, met, I took a class with her and consequently I was in a teacher trainer program for The Dailey Method.

Say what!?!

Yes. Slowly but surely, I have been training myself and learning about the program with workshops and observations since May (with a bit of a pause mid-summer, where I almost backed out due to workload and nerves, but oh so glad I didn't) and now soon it is time to take it to the next level. Finish the program and become a teacher.

That is where my dearest blog comes in. I have talked about this before. Not wanting my blog to be a place of stress and nerves, but a collection of good work and writing. So, I am going to take a break from it. Finish my teaching program. Get a workload/teaching schedule going and then come back to it with good care and drive.

This past winter and summer here on the blog have been so great. It has served as a platform for my daily findings and fueled my creativity incredibly. I love this form of outlet and that it has pushed me to collect my thoughts, write more in English and with my Icelandic Designer Spotlight series gotten to know a few incredible Icelandic designers and I feel like I have just scratched the surface with that project.

I will see you all soon again. Hopefully no later than early October. I do plan to post some work updates, if time permits, and I look forward to coming back to all of this with more focus, more insight and a totally stable core ;)

LOVELY LABELS: HUMANOID

There has been a definite shift in the air this past week. Summer is ending and the days of lounging and chilling are coming to an end, (for now). A new school year is starting with all its planning and organizing and I am super excited to reclaim my oldest son this week, who has been spending the past 9 weeks in Iceland. It will be great to have him home.

I don't do too much of shopping (or at least I try to keep it to a minimum) but every season I feel it is necessary to add a little something to your wardrobe. My mom used to take me to buy something new before school started, and usually I got something wearable for Christmas and again a little something at the first day of summer. I think it's a nice tradition and I do the same for my children.

I was reminded of a beautiful label this morning, during my daily blogroll at all the mountains. Humanoid was created in Arnhem in the Netherlands over 30 years ago and I first was introduced to it through one of my all time favorite stores in Iceland Fríða & Dýrið (unfortunately not still open). My first Humanoid pants I bought during my first pregnancy in my early twenties. They were amazing. They had the roll down yoga pants waist (something so new at the time) and were cool and stretchy and I wore them until they fell apart. I remember a few other items I purchased at that time, always in love with the material, the style and quality of the label. And then somehow I lost contact, perhaps because it wasn't around as much in Iceland and I wasn't keeping up, but how I loved looking through their latest brochure. They still have the same style about them, still look oh so comfy and oh so cool.

The kami collection by et la benn.

et la benn is a design studio based in Berlin, managed by Oliver Bischoff and Danilo Dürler. They offer consulting for product, interior, furniture, food and retail design and concepts. This collection of pots and vases is one of a few in their kami collection and it is so interesting. They have the look and feel of heavy cemented pieces but are made from 100% biodegradable cellulose using a simple air drying process.

Pretty cool.

Ingo and I have been making our own muesli for some time now. Trying different things with the recipe and recently we discovered that adding a bit of orange zest to the mix just made it too yummy not to share. I have actually made batches and sent home to my father in Iceland, who absolutely loves muesli and gave our batch a great big stamp of approval. It doesn't get much better than that!

Home made Muesli a la Ingo & Helga

2 cups oats

1/2 cup shredded coconut flakes (sweetened)
1/4 cup pecans (chopped)
1/4 cup almonds (chopped or thinly sliced)
zest from half an orange
3 tbls olive oil
3 tbls honey

1/4 cup raisins

1/4 cup dried cranberries

Heat your oven to 375. In a large bowl mix all the dry ingredients (except the raisins and cranberries). Coat the dry ingredients with the honey/oil mixture. Place in a baking pan and spread out. Be careful to not spread the muesli too thin, then it will burn. Put it in the oven for 15 minutes, taking it out every 5 minutes and giving it a twirl with a wooden spoon (I use this one), so all the oats, nuts & coconut get evenly toasted. Let cool before placing it in a large bowl and adding the raisins and dried cranberries. Keep in an airtight container. We usually make about 4-5 batches in one setting and that lasts us about 2-3 weeks. Enjoy!

my office.

With September almost around the corner I am in the mood to really take on our little workspace here in the house. It's been a little over a year since we moved in, and at the time, we were in a hurry to get everything ready. Our youngest guy was born about 2 months later. So, not much has changed around the house since then and I feel like it is time to find a few permanent places for our belongings. Starting with the office.

We have had some pretty grand ideas of making our own tables (just need to get to it) and making the space the most efficient it can be. I think with my increasing workload it would be nice to get it to a point where it's a place for inspiration rather than an extension of the house itself. Give it a breath of fresh air, so when we sit down to work we are inspired by the things around us.

These Wallpockets by Ampersand are super cool and would work perfectly for my little DIY corner, to hold all the stuff I need to work with, and need to keep out of reach of, an ever increasing mobile, 1 year old. They add an awesome touch of color to a space and they are made from 100% recycled cardboard. Cool colors (orange, yes please) + cardboard + recycled, I mean, you can't go wrong. right!?

It's still the middle of summer here in California but for some reason this image caught my eye and it reminded me of when my family and I used to go, almost every weekend, skiing during the winters in Iceland. I loved those times.

ICELANDIC DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: Kría by Jóhanna Methúsalemsdóttir

Today we are talking with Jóhanna Methúsalemsdóttir, the creator of Kría jewelry. Since 2007 she has created 5 collections of her magical and mystical jewelry, all related to her initial collection Kría, that came to be when Jóhanna found a skeleton of an Artic Tern, or Kría in Icelandic, on a beach in Iceland. Her pieces are all hand cast and created by Jóhanna herself in her studio in New York, where she has worked and lived for the past 20 years.

I have been so intrigued by her craft and the delicate nature of her jewelry, since I saw them first a few years ago. The pieces still have that element of rock & roll, that is so absolutely cool and desirable. I love the fact that she explores all kinds of metals, that you can get her pieces in gold, silver and brass and that she mixes the metals together to create contrast and highlights. She uses chains, as well as beads and leather, to create her sometimes extra long chains, that remind you somewhat of spiritual malas or rosaries. You do indeed see the spiritual elements, and I am also convinced that with every piece created, and every piece worn, you are, as Johanna puts it: "fostering a kinship with anyone who wears my jewelry through one of the oldest traditions of humans."

I am thrilled to have Johanna as part of our Icelandic Designer Spotlight Series and even though I could spend forever going through her current and past collections, I really look forward to the journey she will take us on next time around. Enjoy!

SOUPDESIGN: Where does your initial idea for Kría come from and why did you decide on jewelry as your outlet?
JÓHANNA: It all started on a beach in Iceland when I discovered a skeleton of a bird by the same name, the Kria. It is one of the furthest migrating animals in the world. I took it home and started playing with it's individual bones, and began paying closer attention to repeated shapes in nature and figuring out how to wear them. That's when I decided that I would continue to make jewelry for a long time.

SOUPDESIGN: I read that you have your family and friends send you skeletons and bones from Iceland, but what happens next?
JÓHANNA: A dear friend of mine sent me the cod fish bones from Iceland for the last, the Cod collection, but all the other bones, teeth, crustaceans and branches I have found myself both in Iceland and the U.S. But if it's not bones, maybe it's plants or calcified shapes of something less permanent. Nonetheless, jewelry is a tradition of human adornment that dates back 100,00 years to shells and beads. I'm fostering a kinship with anyone who wears my jewelry through one of the oldest traditions of humans.

SOUPDESIGN: Can you tell us a bit about your process from bone to the finished product?
JÓHANNA: The bones are cleaned and boiled, and then spray-painted to close the pores for the casting process. Since bones are porous, the silicon can seep into them and ruin the shapes or brake the more delicate once Before casting begins, I puzzle them on my desk and hang them on my body to see how they might work as an ornament while sketching the better ideas. After the first round of castings, I decide how to wear them and make second rubber/silicon molds to begin casting in the desired metals. Afterwards, pieces are polished and finished and I do my beading or treating as desired.

SOUPDESIGN: What or who inspires you the most?
JÓHANNA: I cultivate my inspiration from my friends and family, and from where we live in relation to nature.

SOUPDESIGN: Did you learn Jewelry Design or has this been a "learn as you go" process?
JÓHANNA: I was an intern for Me & Ro a long time a go when they first began, and back then I took some classes at FIT. But for the most part, this has been an instinctive process of will.

SOUPDESIGN:Name 3 things you can absolutely not be without in your creative process.
JÓHANNA: Love, Family & Friends, which I guess could all be considered as one and the same thing.

SOUPDESIGN:Do you see your jewelry moving from bones to another inspiration in the future? Or do you feel as if you have just started your exploration?
JÓHANNA: There's endless variations in bones, but so is there in leaves, stones, and many things. The ideas and patterns have presented themselves. I try not to think about it too much.

SOUPDESIGN: What's on your playlist at the moment?
JÓHANNA: I listen to WFMU, an independent radio station, where you can hear pretty much anything. I like surprises. I'm also a bit of a record nerd and have tons of them. And at the moment my soundtrack is Double Fantasy by Yoko Ono and John Lennon and lots of R&B.

IR SUMMER STREET EDITION

According to the publishers it will come out bi-weekly during the summer months and will focus primarily on helping the growing number of tourists to Iceland get to know the country better. TAKING TIME

I have embarked upon a new "getting organized" mission. With some positive new additions to my life I have more need than ever to be organized and STAY organized. I have to admit that I am always looking for ways to improve my "working from home with a 1 year old" system, but now is the time to stop planning and start executing. My husband has frequently talked about The Pomodoro Technique as something that I should try and I have always brushed it off as, oh I don't know, too crazy. Ha! I guess you can't get too crazy when it comes to organizing your work / life. Or, at least I am hoping that you can't because I am ALL in and will be doing some serious planning, list making and scheduling.

So, listening to my husband I am giving the The Pomodoro Technique a try and have had a pretty successful day so far. Finishing about 7 pomodoros of work and even planning for this blog post (2 pomodoros or 2 x 25 minutes.. yikes I only have 12 more minutes to get this published).

I did download a timer to work with on my Mac, but wouldn't it be nice to buy one of these to help my keep my schedule?

Oh, I am day-dreaming about how much I am in need of a perfect clutch. I used to be all about the "huge" bag, and don't get me wrong, still am truly a big bag lady, but recently I have been finding all these beautiful clutches that I covet. Maybe it's because my man and I finally found ourselves a great babysitter and we have had the luxury of having a few date nights and somehow logging a huge bag with all the baby stuff still in it, isn't too romantic.

We go out to feel babe free and carefree and having a beautiful clutch for just my phone, lipstick and wallet will definitely help set my date night mood. Don't you think?

I almost can't believe my break week has ended. I could have gone on and on and on, just hanging out with the guys and enjoying summer. It was good to unplug for the week and focus on other things but, now it's back to work and back to normal life. It's not a bad thing, since I do love what I do, and I am happily creating to-do lists for the weeks to come.

I wanted to share with you my little DIY feature I created for the first issue of Home&Delicious. It turned out really well and was so much fun to create. It was especially great because it gave Ingo and me a chance to work together, an added bonus to a fun process. I am really looking forward to the next one.

iPHONE WALLPAPERS

Home & Delicious published its first free online web magazine today. YAY! We have been working away the past few weeks, perfecting and tweaking, and today the Icelandic version went viral. We are just putting the finishing touches on the English version and I will post it here as soon as it's out.

I created these patterns for the magazine and thought it might be nice to offer them as free iPhone wallpapers for you to download. I will be creating new patterns for each issue, so look out for new ones in August and collect them all! Oh, and if you would like to download them for your ipad head on over to the Home & Delicious Blog and grab them there.
