If you desire a mid-life career change you must know that there will be hard work and learning involved. Even if you are a grandmother with extra time and a desire to continue learning new things, you know that your learning will require hard work and time. No matter how young or old you are and regardless of what kind of learning you want to do, consider the use of educational software for all of your learning needs.

The ability to use educational software for many kinds of learning is one of the great blessings of our computer driven society. If you are looking for ways to help prepare your children for school or to keep them busy with constructive things, educational software is perfect for you. Kids of all ages love to spend time on the computer, so it will not be long before they begin loving spending hours using their educational software. Some kids will have so much fun on the computer that they will not realize how much they are learning. There is nothing more exciting and relieving for a parent than to see kids enjoying the learning process.

Educational software is also ideal for teens and adults of all ages. There is nothing more convenient than sitting down to learn at your personal computer and having great materials come in package deals. With educational software you do not have to sign up for a class or find time to head to the library. You can simply set aside as little or as much time as you have to continue the lifelong privilege of learning new things.

One of the hardest parts about beginning to use educational software is sifting through all of the products that are available. You will find the process less overwhelming if you begin with a clear sense of your learning goals. Knowing the things you hope you or your children will learn makes it much easier to narrow down educational software packages and programs that might be right for you.

You can shop for educational software online, in bookstores or in many computer supply stores. Whatever your source, just get your hands on some educational software programs that will teach you and your family to love rather than loathe learning new things.

Basic Spyware Tips

Technorati Tags: spyware,removal spyware,anti spyware,adware spyware,adware remover spyware,free spyware

Nowadays, it's a sad but true fact that spyware and adware programs are a far greater threat to your internet security than the dreaded computer viruses. Indeed, spyware, adware and other so-called malware (such as key loggers and trojan horses) actually constitute the biggest single online threat to your privacy and the security of your data.
It's also a major reason for system slowdowns on computers, as these types of programs generally use up precious system resources including RAM (memory) and hard drive space.
So, let’s look at some basic facts about spyware and adware, where these programs come from, what they are, and what you can do about protecting yourself.

Spyware comes in various guises and forms, but basically, it is a program or piece of information that is secretly placed on your computer, that sends data about you or your computer habits to someone else on the Internet, without your knowledge. This can be a company that is collecting data, or a thief seeking to steal access to your computer or the information held in your database (passwords, credit card details and so on).
Spyware can also be a program that places unwanted ads on your computer, often in the form of a malicious cookie. A cookie is a little piece of information placed in your web browser to track your web habits, which, in its more generally benign form, is useful as, for example, a web site can see you have visited it before and let you on without a registration process. Again, in its more benign guise, a cookie can help you by keeping track of your progress through a web store. They are also used to customize website ads to your likes and dislikes.
But, obviously, when they are used for spyware or adware purposes, a cookie is not a welcome guest on your PC!
Spyware programs can get into your computer in several different ways. Sometimes they arrive as an automatic download from a website you are surfing. Porn and online gambling sites are notorious for this, for example.

Sometimes, if you download a free or illegal piece of software, they are embedded in the installation process, or spyware can get on your computer via an email attachment that you shouldn't have opened. (Tip here - if an e-mail comes from an unrecognized source with an attachment, DO NOT open it - it's almost guaranteed to be some sort of program that you definitely don't want!)
Spyware and adware are bad news for several reasons:
They hog precious system resources like memory and hard disk space. If you computer runs much slower than it did previously, then it probably is infected with spyware. If you have never done a spyware scan, then it’s almost guaranteed that there is spyware on your system slowing things down.

They can seriously compromise your privacy and security, providing outsiders with information about your computer habits. For example, by installing a keylogger, spyware can capture your keystrokes and send it to a third party.
This can potentially expose your user IDs and passwords to thieves.
Other program such as trojans which allows someone to log into your computer remotely and use it for their own purposes like sending spam or launching malicious attacks on other computers on the Internet, making it look like you are at fault.

So, it’s bad! Let’s look at how to get rd of it.
There are lots of both paid and free anti-spyware programs out there, and, like all things in life, some are better than others. The question often asked is, which is better, a free program or a paid one.

The simple answer is that the best approach is a combination of the two, and, unlike anti-virus programs, you can run more than one anti-spyware program on your system without any problems.
First thing to do is to install the totally free Spybot Search and Destroy program, which will eliminate 70-85 per cent of all known spyware.
The, invest a little money in a good paid program like Spyware Doctor, NoAdware or Spyware Nuker to complete the job for you. Yes, I know that it means spending some money, but if it can prevent someone stealing your credit card details, for example, then it's a sure fire thing that its going to be money well spent.

Another advantage of the paid programs is that they generally have a more effective "pro-active" nature to them than the free programs do. In other words, they are usually far better at stopping spyware and adware actually getting into your PC in the first place, and, clearly, preventing the problem is far easier and less time consuming than having to deal with it once your PC becomes infected. To read more, http://webbiz99.com/spywareadware/

How To Overcome A Fear Of Computers

Does the thought of computers make you fearful, worried or concerned? Does it cause anxiety as you know you should learn how to use one? Do you feel overwhelmed at the thought of learning a new skill? Are you afraid that you might not be able to learn? Are you scared that you might press the wrong button and delete everything?
A key emotion that can keep you from achieving what you want in life is Fear or Low level concern, Anxiety, Worry. I'm not talking about panic attacks, high level fears and phobias, which are often caused by a significant emotional event in your past. The fear and anxiety I am referring to are those daily worries, niggles or sixth sense telling you that all is not quite right for you. They can keep you stuck if you allow them to and can grow out of all proportion if you don't act to resolve the feelings.
If this fear is having a significant negative impact on your life, it’s time to do something about it.
Luckily these fears can be turned into a positive resource and can be easily overcome. They are telling you that something is going to happen soon that you need to prepare for. They are your body's way of alerting you to something you need to do.
The solution
• Review what you are feeling fearful about and evaluate what you must do to prepare yourself.
• Figure out what actions you need to take to deal with the situation in the best possible way.
Overcoming your fear – e.g. a fear of learning IT Skills
1. Understand your reason for wanting to learn new skills. What does it mean to you? What will it give you? What's in it for you?
If you have a compelling reason for achieving your goal of learning a new skill then you will overcome any barriers that might come along.
2. Identify what you are afraid of. What exactly are you saying to yourself? If it’s ‘I can’t do this’ or ‘I’m too old to learn something new’ or ‘I might make a mistake and break something’. These are negative or limiting beliefs that you have about the situation and if you allow them to, will stop you from being successful. What you need to do is change a negative thought to a positive one. For example, ‘I can do it’ or ‘Even though I am XX I can learn a new skill’.
One of my favourite quotes is from Henry Ford who said ‘If you think you can or you think you can’t, your right!’ Start telling yourself that you can do it.
3. What do you need to do? Who can support you? Who do you know who has already done what you want to do? What courses are there locally?
4. Decide what you need to do, believe that you can do it, then do it!
At this stage also check in with yourself about your level of commitment. Rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being low and 10 being High as to how much you really want to learn about IT. If it's 7 and above well done and go to it. Anything below 7 then you need to go back to your goal and understand what it is that you want to achieve. Once you are at 10 then you will do whatever it takes.
Enjoy the Process!

Installing A Blog ( WordPress )

Technorati Tags: Blog,WordPress,Software Installation

WordPress is a fantastic piece of software, and what is even more amazing its Open Source, meaning it will cost you NOTHING!! You can visit wordpress.org and download the full application here, and then manually install it on your server. If you do go down this path, then make sure you check out the following installation guides

http://www.optiniche.com/blog/26/installing-wordpress-an-audio-visual-presentation/
and
WordPress’s Famous 5 Minute Installation guide (check it out at http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Famous_5-Minute_Install)
But an even easier way to install Wordpress is to install it using Fantastico that is included with just about every cPanel installation on the planet.
You can log into your cPanel application, and at the bottom of all the icons you see on the main startup page is an icon with a “funny” name called FANTASTICO
Fantastico is way to install all sort of open source application on your server for FREE.
Find the WordPress link on the left hand side of the screen (in the blogs section), and click on it.
Then move across to the right hand side of the screen an click on the word that say “New Installation” - It actually a link but it doesn’t have an underline under it.
This pops up a very simple form (and the only form you have to fill out).
Put in your blog details, like what you are going to call it, what you want as login details plus a few other bits and pieces and press the button at the bottom.
Within seconds, you will be taken to another page that will show you the login details for your blog and away you go..
It just could not be easier way to install WordPress..
No messing about with databases, no FTP’ing files back and forth and no messing about setting file permission etc.
It sure is easy.. Check it out..

Submit your software automatically to web sites.

Technorati Tags: ad submission,pad submitter,software promotion,software submission,software submitter,search engine placement,SEO,software marketing,software advertising,software distribution,Software Promote,add software,increase software sales,pad

The GSA Auto SoftSubmit is a program designed to submit software to hundreds of web sites.

The best software doesn't get soled if you don't promote it. A good and easy way is to submit your software to shareware archives. Unfortunately this could take a lot more time then actually developing your product. With the GSA Auto SoftSubmit program you can cut that time to a minimum. Software submission to promote shareware has never been easier with it.

It will save you a lot of time and money since its fully automated. Load a PAD file and let the program do the rest (pad submission). You can even create and edit PAD files (no need to use an external editor like PADGen). That is software marketing at its best.

The program is getting updated several times a month to make sure all included providers (over 3300 archive sites, web directories and search engines to submit to) still work.

There are a lot of web sites with shareware and freeware archives. Is your application listed on those? This program will take care of it and submits your software to all of them. Imagine your software is added to thousands of web sites.

But why is it so important to submit shareware and have it listed there? Not only that more customers will find and buy your product, but also your ranking in the search engines will dramatically rise since many of the shareware sites have a back link to your web site. More visitors result in rise sales of your product.

A demo version is available form the homepage
http://www.gsa-online.de/eng/softsubmit.html

Twitter and How It’s Changing the World

There is a pretty good chance you have heard of Twitter, as it has been mentioned on Good Morning America, CNBC and CNN. It was talked about all through the recent election, quoted in movies, and even on a variety of the current hit TV shows. Terms such as tweet and status update are now common language. What has really given Twitter the steam it needs to survive as a long-standing successful Web 3.0 company is the fact that it’s totally different than everything we’re used to. The norm has been search-engine friendly articles, long blog content and even longer press releases. The founders of Twitter (Evan Williams and Biz Stone) knew people were lacking time and getting frustrated with the status quo, so they decided to shake things up a bit. The shake up: No more long content allowed. Anything you want to say must be 140 characters or less. The result: People have been flocking to Twitter like there’s no tomorrow!
What is Twitter?
“Twitter is a service for friends, family and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?”
That is the definition provided by Twitter.com but it doesn’t do it justice. Twitter has outgrown the vision of the people who originated it, and it has become a place to find long-lost friends, connect with your favorite authors, build raving fans, get instant feedback, launch new products and build long-lasting relationships. You have the ends of the spectrum: social networking and micro-blogging. In other words you can have the social connection with people, but your able to do it with much smaller amounts of text. Obviously the use of Twitter easily scales past the idea of updating people on “what you are doing.”
On Twitter, there are three key terms you need to know: followers, following and tweets. Following are the people you personally are tracking and want to be kept up to date on. Followers are those people who want to be kept in the know of what you’re doing. Lastly, tweets are your updates broadcasted to your followers. These updates are strictly limited to 140 total characters. This makes it a micro-blog post.
Other Twitter Lingo You Need to be Aware of:
• Status: Your update to “what are you currently doing?”
• Direct Message: Conversations that are private between you and another user.
• @Tweets: Public responses to others’ tweets.
• Retweets: taking someone else’s message and broadcasting it to your followers
• TinyURL: A tool that shortens your long links automatically
• Tweeps: (for good measure) Your Twitter peeps.

Top 5 Accounting Software for Small Business

1) Intuit QuickBooks Accounting Software
Quickbooks is a popular full featured accounting and payroll program designed for small businesses - or, I should say, a small business accounting software series. Full Coverage sections.
If you've got great content, use this little known tip to get a link from a popular section of Yahoo!.
Yahoo has "Full Coverage" pages on hundreds of news topics. Under those topics, they list useful sites. They're not the same as those listed in the Yahoo! Directory.
Yahoo! will consider suggestions for original content news and op-ed (opinion/editorial) articles, and for related web sites of a non-commercial nature. Do not submit syndicated or wire service content.
You may submit content to the following areas:

Full Coverage on Yahoo.com
Full Coverage on Yahoo! Asia
Yahoo! Movies Full Coverage
Full Coverage on Yahoo! Canada
Yahooligans Full Coverage

To submit your site for review, click on the "Submit links or send feedback to Full Coverage" link at the bottom of a page in the Full Coverage section, and you will end up on the "How do I submit a link to Full Coverage?" page.
If your content is deemed worthy by a Yahoo! editor, they might just link to it. In addition, Full Coverage editors may also post links to specific articles on your web site.
Inclusion into Yahoo!'s Full Coverage section will almost definitely increase your traffic, boost your credibility, and search engine link popularity of your site.
But be warned. You MUST be submitting great content. Inclusion into the Yahoo! Full Coverage section is pretty much reserved for the very best content.
It is for this reason that few submissions are ever successful. But it's always worth a try, right? The printer is about what you’d expect from HP these days, while the tablet presents some interesting new usability options. You certainly shouldn’t buy the eStation just because you want an Android tablet, but it makes a decent bonus if you’re looking for a functional all-in-one printer anyway.
Features:

wireless all-in-one supports HP ePrint and iPrint technologies

includes 20 free faxes per month via eFax.com

separate ink tanks per color

includes a 7″ wireless Android-powered tablet called “Zeen”

MSRP of $399.99

Pros:

fast, sharp printing

easy to set up

decent paper tray

Cons:

the Zeen tablet feel under-powered

No market:// URI support for Android apps

Limited Linux support

Review:
Reviewing printers in the year 2011 just isn’t that exciting. Unless, of course, that printer also includes a wireless Android-powered tablet. The output quality from the eStation is what you’d expect these days: fast, high quality text and graphics. Photos on photo paper look good. The printer is not particularly quiet about its job, though: loading paper is actually a fairly noisy process, and the sound of the print head speeding back and forth across the page is more than a little noticeable.

HP calls the tablet portion of the eStation the “Zeen”. It’s a 7″ touchscreen that provides you control over your printer, and for its primary task it does a great job. It’s unobtrusive and intuitive to use. When a print job completes, the Zeen makes a demure little “ding” sound to let you know. Using the Zeen, you can copy, scan or fax without ever using your computer.
The integration of printer information and controls into Android is very well done. The Zeen system dashboard shows you a quick overview of your wireless network settings, Zeen battery charge, estimated ink levels in the printer, and info on any SD card inserted into the Zeen. The typical Android slide-down notification system reveals active print jobs as well as the printer’s IP address and ePrint email address.
Setting up the Zeen’s home screen is a little laborious, and includes a rather paltry selection of widgets. It’s not possible to add widgets, so if you don’t like what they give you you’re out of luck. One of the most striking things about the widget selection is the complete lack of anything from Google. Instead, you get Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! Weather, and Yahoo! Daily Digest news headlines widgets. It’s pretty obvious that HP and Yahoo! made a deal over this, and it’s a little unfortunate that they’ve chosen what widgets you can use on the Zeen.
The eStation supports the same print apps that other HP printers do, with the difference being that you access the apps through the Zeen. This is the biggest real-world use of the Zeen you’re likely to see. The physically attached interface of other printers means you need to gather the kids around the printer itself to select which PBS Kids coloring book pages you want to print out. With the eStation, you can give the Zeen to your kids and let them find and print the pages they want. Be advised, though, that the Zeen will not be responsive enough for most hyper-stimulated kids today. It literally takes about ten seconds to launch the PBS Kids print app. Navigating within the app, and selecting something to print is also measured in seconds.
The selection of content within the print apps is fairly stagnant. I haven’t seen a lot of new coloring book pages or CubeeCraft constructs since I first got my review unit of the eStation. I haven’t looked at the Coupons, My Recipes or the daily Sudoku apps, though, so maybe those have more regularly updated content.
The eStation driver software is pretty typical. Printing and scanning is easy if you’re using Windows or Mac. Linux users should note that Ubuntu 10.10 is not yet supported. Linux support comes via the HPLIP Open Source project.
Interestingly, the Zeen made it possible for me to print from and scan to my Ubuntu 10.10 laptop, although in a very roundabout way that few sane end users would opt to use. Remember that the ePrint print-by-email service has a 5 megabyte limit on files it will accept, so to print anything larger than that I had to first copy it to an SD card, then insert that SD card into the Zeen, and finally print the item from the Zeen’s QuickOffice app. Like I said, roundabout. A similar process worked for scanning: scan to an SD card in the Zeen, put the SD card into my laptop, retrieve the files.
The Zeen has a very specific set of features, and is not a general purpose tablet. You’re not going to whip it out to check IMDB while watching a movie. You can load an SD card full of MP3s and use it as a portable music player, but really, why would you? Web browsing on the Zeen is so slow as to be not worth the effort. Checking your email on the Zeen is a novelty you’ll try, just to see it work, and then never use again.
One real shortcoming, I think, is that the Zeen has no support for market:// URIs for Android apps. I understand they don’t want to support third-party apps, and some (many?) apps might not even function very well, if at all, on the Zeen. You can load Android apps if you can find a .apk file, but it seems really lame to me for HP to completely disable access to the Android marketplace.
Bottom Line
Does the marriage of an Android tablet to an all-in-one printer make sense? Yeah, actually it does, as long as you understand the limitations of the pairing. The Zeen isn’t a fully featured tablet, but rather a specific feature, with a specific set of functionality tailored to the eStation. Don’t buy the eStation for the Zeen. Buy the eStation because you need a reliable all-in-one printer, and enjoy what the Zeen offers you.

Source:crunchgear.com

Free iPod Video Converter Tips

Technorati Tags: free,ipod,video,converter,software,conversion,convert,download,media,movies,shows,firmware,format,games,website

An iPod video converter is a software that will allow you to quickly convert your computer media files (avi, mpeg etc) to a format supported by your iPod. This way you can download, transfer, convert and watch all kind of movies, TV shows and other video files on your iPod. There are a lot of free iPod converters out there and most of them include extra software that will allow you to download video before converting it and playing it in your iPod. Here is what to look for when choosing a free iPod video converter: - The video converter software must support as many video file formats as possible (avi, mpeg, wmv, mov, divx are just some popular formats). There are video converters that also support conversion of popular audio files (wav, mp3, ogg, m4a etc). Check out if all the necessary encoders and decoders are included in the software.

An iPod video converter is a software that will allow you to quickly convert your computer media files (avi, mpeg etc) to a format supported by your iPod. There are a lot of free iPod converters out there and most of them include extra software that will allow you to download video before converting it and playing it in your iPod.

- The video conversion speed. A lot of converters while they support all the possible video formats, they are really slow and sometimes they freeze causing a lot of frustration. Many video converters do not support multithreading and batch conversion making the process of video conversion apain. Batch conversion will allow you to convert more than one video files at the same time. - The user interface must be friendly and designed in a way that will allow even a total newbie to access all the controls and functions of the video converter software. If a software company creates a user friendly iPod video converter, chances are that the video converter will work properly apart from being user friendly. - Check out if the iPod video converter allows you to convert a part/segment of the movie. This is a demand if you want to watch just a part of a movie show or a football game. Be sure to use the preview feature if any, to see the output result before converting. - The quality of the converted media file. Many iPod video converters are really fast but the output is disappointing. Video freezes, audio stops playing, screen turns red or green, short audio or video breaks during playback. This is common for some video converters. Especially if you don't know how to use the conversion process properly. Be careful when adjusting video size, bit rate etc. Before installing any iPod video converter make sure you have the latest version of firmware for your iPod in order to get the most out of the video converter software. Download the latest firmware for your iPod for free at the apple website.

Title: Stopping 100% Of Spam In 7 Minutes Flat!

Quit some time ago, I don’t remember where exactly, I read about a technique to stop receiving spam for good which worked very good for me and it will soon work for you as well.

1. Stop using any email address that currently receives spam. Yeap it’s tuff and harsh, but will 100% sure kill all your current spam.
With any body that you want to stay in contact with, give them a unique email address of yours as described below in point 5.
The next step is to setup a system to protect you from future spam. Note that the following instructions all have to be followed in your servers cPanel area.
The cPanel web host I use and recommend is Kiosk. http://www.wwkiosk.com/members/add2you/
2. a) If you have more then one domain name, setup your catch all addresses for all except one of your domains to:
:fail: unknown. Contact me at http://reply2frank.com/
b) If you have just one domain name, add forwarders from all email addresses that used to receive spam to:
:fail: unknown. Contact me at http://reply2frank.com/
3. With your remaining or only domain, create a secret POP3 email box, e.g. ur-catch-all-dom.com
5. Whenever you need to give somebody somewhere an email address, just make up an email address that identifies the person or company you give it to e.g.
Frank.Bauer@ur-catch-all-dom.com or add2it-com@ur-catch-all-dom.com etc.
Now, the final step how to maintain your spam free system
6. The first and most important is loading time. The time taken to open a file is very less as compared to earlier versions. There are many advantages as viewing screen is larger than earlier one and there is special taskbar on left hand side of document which allows you to add comments, thumbnails, which show where we are right now when there are many pages to read. There is one more option where you can create PDF files online but that is not preferable as there is good free software such as primo PDF you can see the review of that software on review page on www.mypczone.co.nr
Adobe PDF 8 have net meeting feature where people all across the world having internet can connect with each other and share their PDF files and presentation online it is very good for corporate and business clients but not so useful for normal people.
It has very simple tool bar containing zooming options, printing, page numbers, and search option where you can search for required word or bookmark. So it is very convenient for reading e books. The most impressive feature is faster opening of online PDF files and faster file saving from Internet.
It also has automatic scroll option where you don’t have to click to go ahead with page and it is done automatically. It also has full screen mode to read documents as in book. It is good for reading e books where you can concentrate on material as there is no toolbar etc to distract you.
Some features such as dictionary additions and digital signature that are good.
Appearance: ***1/2
Ease of working: *****
Tools: ***1/2
Overall:****

SMS SOFTWARE AND SMS GATEWAY

Summary:
What is SMS Software ?
Send SMS Message from your PC to Mobile
Bulk SMS Software
What is SMS Gateway ?
SMS API?

What is SMS Software ?
Software for Pocket PC, PDA and smart phones is a simple powerful easy to use messaging utility that allows you to create and send group (mass) sms messages to list of selective contacts, phonebook or individuals globally. It allows you to backup Blogger, WordPress and self-hosted WordPress Blogs. It can backup articles, user comments and blog categories of your blog. Ability to backup images will be added soon.
3. HTTrack Website Copier - This free software allows you to create a mirror copy of the blog on your computer. It builds recursively all directories, getting HTML, images, and other files from the server to your computer.
4. BlogBackupOnline -A free web based service that allows you to backup your blog. You can restore blog content anytime using the backup created with this service. It is also very useful in case you are shifting from one blogging service to another. For example switching from blogger to wordpress.
5. Official Blogger backup steps - Blogger does not have an export or download function. However, you can use these instructions to create a single file with all your posts which you may publish and then copy to your own computer for use as desired. This detailed method involves modification of template and few steps.
6. Manual way to backup posts & Images -This method works for new blogger (previously called blogger beta). Save and copy all textual content using standard URL: http://name.blogspot.com/search?max-results=N (where name is blogname and N is number of posts you want to backup). Using Blogger Email feature - You can enable send post by email feature in your Blogger Dashboard. As soon as you publish a new post you will receive whole post in your inbox. In this way you will have blog posts archived in your inbox. Under ‘Settings’ click on ‘Email’ option. Enter your email address in ‘Blogsend address’.
8. BlogCollector - This software allows you to backup your blogger blog on your computer. You can publish that backup in PDF or MS Word format. However, that backup is no good to restore content of your blogger blog. This software is good enough to create blog backup for redistributing it further in PDF or Word format.
9. Good-old Copy Paste Method -It is a time consuming but very simple way of backing up your blogger blog. As soon as you finish writing your blog post, copy the post content while in HTML mode and paste in notepad file on your computer. Name the notepad file with the title of post for easy searching.
10. Start thinking, innovating - Well, above were 9 ways to backup your blogger blog. Do you know any method that can be 10th method to backup blogger blog? If YES, please share by adding a comment. Sometimes these are just individual slides (like a diagram or case study), sometimes they are templates, and sometimes they are whole, individual presentations. Most of my PowerPoint work is completed at my day job where I am an in-house designer, but my freelancing alter ego occasionally comes across a client needing some presentational pick-up. Over the years, I have built and edited hundreds of PowerPoint files.
I know a lot of people think PowerPoint is the devil incarnate, but in the corporate world, it is an ubiquitous evil. To shake some of the negative stereotypes, I apply traditional design principals to make my company and clients look better than the competition.
We go to 120 trade shows a year, and we present at every single one. We also use Macromedia's Breeze for hundreds of online demos. Our PowerPoint is often the first thing a potential customer will see from us, so it is critical (and easy) to make a good impression before they even receive a brochure.
PowerPoint is used by nearly sales guy on the planet, with a whole industry of accessories built around the presentation guru / road warrior concept. It is employed for downloadable or live web demos, and it is even used (or abused, depending on your point of view) to pass along copy, concepts and notes between internal team members. With this volume of use, PowerPoint slide design becomes just another facet of a company’s identity program.
From Chuck’s Neighborhood PeeCee Warehouse to Apple Computer, the local cafe with the amazing bagels to Starbucks Coffee, every business benefits from a unique identity, a look and feel that separates them from competition. The company logo is only a small part. Corporate colors, type treatments, illustration styles and repeated graphic elements are all parts of the greater whole. This identity is carried through to stationary, trade show graphics, packaging, advertising and yes, PowerPoint.
The software has become so ubiquitous that I consider it part of a greater paradigm shift in mainstream communication. The only problem is that this evolution is hindering communication. Like text messaging or 200-pixel banner ads, the information is compressed to a set of key buzzwords, crippling the message by stripping the skeleton of any meat. Bullet points become rapid-fire metadata. I give you the words "purple" and "fish" -- you figure out what I am trying to say.
* Leverage your existing technology
* Realize rapid ROI
* Streamlined implementation
Is about as meaningful as:
* Parsed cabbage flux capacitor
* Disco glitter manifestation
* Expressive giraffe BLT
Maybe a hundred years ago those phrases denoted something, but by sheer repetition and abuse, the PowerPoint generation has crushed the meaning like 200,000 people at a Stones concert trampling through a flower garden.
In the same way a good logo supports a successful identity program, good PowerPoint transcends half-assed bullet points and reinforces the speaker -- their personality, message and purpose. It doesn't recycle the same, tired messaging over and over. Not only does it look awesome, good PowerPoint hammers home the presenter's message with unique phrasing, interesting design elements and a certain disregard for the status quo bullshit buzz-speak.
All the flashy backgrounds, painstaking animations and intense clipart research are for nothing if the message has been gutted from the shell. So while I "design" PowerPoint, I design for the audience because I am focused on how they will react to the information.

9 Tips To Keep Windows XP Running Smooth

Technorati Tags: Microsoft windows,windows xp,xp tips,RAM,BIOS,Operating Systems

According to my fellows Microsoft Windows XP was the worst operating system ever released..That is until Vista made it's debut. So here is some XP tips.

There are many things that cause a computer to be sluggish from software to hardware. It can be too small a hard drive or not enough RAM. It can be anything from BIOS and/or Operating System Settings to programs that are eating up your CPU and RAM (no matter how much you have). Or it can be your network.
Personally, I work my computer like a young mother with a house full of kids 12 to 18 hours a day.
That mother needs to unwind at the end of the day and so does my computer and probably yours too.
Here are 9 Tips in the order they should be completed that can help keep your computer happy and working without complaining:
1. This is so basic I shouldn't need to say it, Keep Which Ever E-Mail Program You Use Cleaned Out. I have clients who are always complaining, but who refuse to dump years and years of accumulated e-mail.
2. Make sure you have a good anti virus program (Only one per computer please), have it up to date, and auto monitoring.
3. Make sure you have a good anti spy ware program (Only one per computer), have it up to date, and auto monitoring.
4. Run Disk Clean Up Daily (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Clean Up - a box opens - make sure each box is checked, click 'OK' - a box pops up - Click Yes).
5. Delete Cookies and Cached Files Daily (Start, Control Panel -if you have not done it yet, click 'Switch To Classic View', Internet Options - a pop up box will appear - Delete Cookies, Click OK, Click Delete Files - check 'Delete All Offline Content' - Click OK, Now Set Your Clear History to no more than 7 Days - if you haven't used it for a week you probably won't miss it - Click OK)
6. A very important step almost everyone misses: Empty The Prefetch Folder (Start, My Computer, 'C' , Windows, Prefetch Folder, Edit, Select All, File, Delete - pop up box appears - Click Yes, Close Windows Window)
7. Empty Recycle Bin. For the sake of brevity, I am assuming everyone knows where it is and how to empty it.
8. Scan Hard Drive 'C' (Start, My Computer, Right Click 'C' - box opens - Click Properties at the bottom - another box opens - Click Tools, Click Check Now, Make sure both 'Automatically fix file system errors' and 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors' are checked, Click Start. Get a cup of java (oh, black, thank you) and Wait !
9. Defrag Computer (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter - window opens - Select 'C' Drive, Click Defragment). Pop a top and Wait !
The last two steps (8 and 9) can take awhile if they have not been done recently. I complete this entire routine on my computer just before I stop work for the day everyday and the entire sequence takes no longer than 20 minutes and often much less.
You can find more help with free download links at http://www.remotehelpdesk1.com

Every Computer Needs Anti Virus Software

Technorati Tags: anti virus software

There are a few things in life that everyone simply needs. I'l be the first to agree that we use the word "need" far too often when really we are probably wanting something rather than truly needing it. I believe strongly that everyone needs clean water, adequate food, proper medical care and a safe place to live and sleep. I will not say, however, that everyone in the world needs to drive an expensive sports car or go on vacation four times a year. As an internet design specialist, I must say that everyone who owns a computer must have anti virus software.
There is no question about it: anti virus software is a must for an internet using computer in the world. Why? Simply put, because far too many people have taken pleasure in or made a job out of messing up the security of the internet. Far too many people think that placing a virus over the internet that will effectively destroy many computers and programs is a comical thing. And this is why anti virus software is a must for all computer owners.
Anti virus software exists to combat the evil people who are at work to bring a nasty virus to your computer. A virus can come through a variety of ways and many that are seemingly innocent and unsuspecting. So anti virus software must work very hard to bring the level of protection that is necessary to personal and public computers of all kinds.
If you are unsure about where or how to get the right anti virus software for you, then talk with a friend who knows about computers or visit a store that specializes in computers and internet security. Talk through your options and do a little research to see exactly what you're getting for any kind of anti virus software. Make sure you choose anti virus software that will be effective in destroying the things you need destroyed.
You will never be fully safe to browse the internet or to use a computer until it is protected by strong anti virus software. So take some time, use some money and get your computer protected by good anti virus software. You will not see any effects of the software on your computer. Keep in mind that this is exactly the point: your anti virus software will keep you from having any problems or disfunctions with your computer and you'll be able to get back to work or to play hassle free on the computer.
There are a few things in life that everyone simply needs. Anti-spyware programs secure the computers against the effort of malicious spyware, to take partial control of, or intercept a computer’s operation without the user’s consent or knowledge.
Anti-spyware programs offer real time protection, and scanning and removal. Real time protection functions similar to real time anti-virus protection. That is, the program monitors all incoming data by scanning all the files that the user tries to download from the Internet, and blocks the activity of components that represent spyware. Real time protection also blocks any unauthorized attempts made to install startup programs or to change the browser settings. The scanning and removal features offered by most anti-spyware programs are simple. The program scans the contents of the operating system files, Windows registry, and installed programs and removes any entry or file which tallies with those in the already existing list of identified spyware components.
Anti-spyware programs also require a frequently updated database of latest spyware components. Whenever a new spyware is released, the anti-spyware developers discover and evaluate them, and create “definitions” or “signatures” which help the anti-spyware programs to identify and remove the spyware. Hence, it is highly recommended to update the anti-spyware program frequently to ensure protection.
Major anti-virus firms including McAfee, Symantec, and Sophos have added anti-spyware features to their existing anti-virus products.
Anti-spyware programs of recognized companies are usually not available for free use; occasionally the manufacturers allow a free trial, enabling only certain features. Very often they only provide free scanning; the actual removal of the spyware is possible only with a registered version of the product. Because fake anti-spyware programs that are actually spyware exist, one should not be put off by the price of legitimate software and the protection it offers.

Summary:
Anti-spyware is software that protects computer users from spyware and other unwanted software. Anti-spyware programs secure the computers against the effort of malicious spyware, to take partial control of, or intercept a computer’s operation without the user’s consent or knowledge.

Computer Viruses: The Nasty Truth

The term, “virus”, in computer technology, refers to a self replicating application that spreads by making copies of itself by inserting into other programs, other executables or documents, and when executed begins to perform harmful actions on the system. All computer viruses are deliberately created, not always malicious and some of them may be benign and simply annoying.

Non-Memory Resident and Memory Resident Viruses:

Non-Memory resident viruses, when they are executed, immediately look for other hosts that can be infected. When they infect these targets, they transfer control to the application program they infected. A non-resident virus has a finder module and a replication module. The finder module, once it finds a new file to infect, calls upon the replication module to infect that file.

Memory-Resident virus stays in the memory and do not look for hosts to infect when they are executed. It stays active in the background after its host program is terminated, and infects files as soon as they are opened or accessed by other programs or the operating system. It does have the replication module like the non-memory resident virus, but without the finder module.

Types of Computer Viruses:

File Viruses: These types of viruses are the most common, and mostly infect open files and program libraries on an operating system. The virus functions by inserting itself into a host file, modifies it in such a way that the virus is executed when the file is opened. They are also known as left viruses. Today, there are known viruses infecting all kinds of executables of standard DOS: batch command files (BAT), loadable drivers (SYS, including special purpose files IO.SYS and MS- DOS.SYS) and binary executables (EXE, COM). There are also viruses targeting executables of other operating systems - Windows 3.x, Windows95/NT, OS/2, Macintosh, Unix, including the VxD drivers of Windows 3.x and Windows95.

Macro viruses: Macros are used in most word processing programs such as Microsoft Office in order to automate or simplify recurring tasks in documents. Macro viruses are those viruses that use the application's own macro programming language to distribute themselves, in which an unwanted sequence of actions is performed automatically when the application is started or something else triggers it. These macro viruses may inflict damage to the document or to other computer software but are relatively harmless, and are often spread as an e-mail virus.

Boot Viruses: These were one of the most common viruses prevalent during the early and mid 1990s, when the use of diskettes was popular. These viruses infect or substitute their own code for either the DOS boot sector or the Master Boot Record (MBR), which controls the boot sequence of the PC. The MBR is executed every time a computer is booted so the virus will also be loaded into memory on every startup and spreads to every disk that the system reads. They are typically very difficult to remove, and most antivirus programs cannot clean the MBR while Windows is running. So, bootable antivirus disks are needed to fix boot sector viruses.

Script viruses: They are a division of file viruses, written in a variety of script languages such as VBS, JavaScript, BAT, PHP, HTML etc. They can form a part of multi-component viruses or infect other scripts such as Windows or Linux command and service files. If the file format, such as HTML, allows the execution of scripts, they can infect it.

Windows Registry - Problem Solving

With so many computer users online in the current day and age, it is inevitable that PC problems will be encountered by most of them from time to time.

IceRocket Tags: registry, windows registry, operating system maintenance. troubleshooting registry,Registry editing and cleaning

With so many computer users online in the current day and age, it is inevitable that PC problems will be encountered by mostof them from time to time.

A lot of these problems are easily avoided, but that's easy to say for someone with technical knowledge and experience, and not so easy for a huge number of users who just want their machines to run as reliably and hassle free as possible.
A great number of people do not even know where to begin when it comes to keeping their PC running as sweetly as the day it was first plugged in, and over a period of time they start to notice the length of time it takes to boot up in the mornings, and that it seems reluctant to carry out tasks that once upon a time it simply sailed through. By the time they start to notice this degradation in performance, the workings of their machine have beome horribly clogged with internet and software "garbage" that the machine has been accumulating every day for months on end.
There are a variety of reasons for this, but this article aims to deal with just one of them - the Windows Registry - so long an area excluded to all but the techno geeks among us, with dire warnings of the dangers of editing your registry!
This was fair, because an inexperienced user running rampant with their delete key in the registry minefield would certainly spell danger for the unfortunate copy of Windows on their machine. Nowadays, things have become a lot easier....
It is quite simple now for people to look after their Windows Registry and this is fortunate indeed, because with high speed internet connections allowing people to download and install a whole host of applications and files, it does not take long for the registry to become horribly clogged with extraneous bits and pieces, all of which will slowly but surely degrade performance of your operating system.

If you don't like the idea of delving around and trying to understand the workings of this mysterious area of Windows, there are plenty of affordable software solutions on the market today - see the foot of this article for a couple of suggestions. Many will offer free trial periods, and will demonstrate in an easy to understand format, just how bad things have become! If you haven't checked your registry in a while, or maybe even never, you should serioulsy consider doing so. You will probably be very happy with the results of a thorough clean up, all at the push of a button and without risking the ruination of your valuable Windows operating system.
Just like anti virus, anti spyware/adware programs, a good registry leaner should be high on your shopping list. When I've shown people the results of a registry scan after just one week of internet use, they are extremely surprised by the large number of conflicts thrown up - often into the hundreds!
In conclusion, keep your registry clean, and if your other system maintenance tasks are kept up to date, you and your PC will be far happier in your partnership for a long time to come.

Alternative Web Browsers – What Are The Choices?

Flickr Tags: Alternative,Web,Browsers,What,are,the,Choices

With all the security woes and annoying user-unfriendly problems associated with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, more and more people are looking for alternatives. Internet surfers seeking out new web browser options have a few good choices to consider, and luckily, all the browsers in this category boast positive attributes and cool features that can make anyone’s browsing experience a good one. In the end, it’s up to you to pick one that fits your specific needs, as everyone looks for something different in a browser. But one thing’s for sure – you’ll never go back to IE.
Opera
The Opera browser sings to a tune all its own. One of the more popular alternative browsers available, it is highly acclaimed by new and veteran users alike. This browser is well-known for loading pages very quickly (especially important for those of us still puttering along on a dial-up connection) and making the browsing experience a smooth one, especially compared to the sometimes-grueling loading times that are the trademark of Internet Explorer.
Opera is lighter than its competitor as well, weighing in at much less than Internet Explorer. The browser comes with a lot of features people have come to expect in the realm of alternative browsers (such as tabbed browsing and a pop-up blocker) that make it faster and easier to navigate the web. Another thing about Opera is that it lets you choose whether or not to run certain features, such as java applets. These are small applications written in the java programming language that can slow down a browser. If you specify, you can turn off certain JavaScript functions. If you’re willing to sacrifice some features that bog down other browser software in order to enjoy the benefits of a faster online experience, Opera is probably the perfect browser for you.
Opera can be downloaded for free – in the past you had to pay for the ad-free version, but with the release of the latest version all that has changed.
Another plus: no security issues have yet to be associated with the browser, so it’s your best bet for surfing safely, although compatibility issues may sometimes hamper your ability to view particular websites.
Firefox
Firefox is gaining steam as a favorite alternative browser, although it has been the top choice for quite some time amongst old-school Internet addicts and those who make good use of tabbed browsing and other user-friendly features not available with Internet Explorer. As it cements its position in the world of mainstream browsers, you can expect even more people to jump on the Firefox bandwagon (Grandma included).
There’s good reason why Firefox is fast becoming a favorite browser. It offers a simple design, fast browsing, and a safer Internet experience. The browser blocks pop-ups, viruses, and spyware – and it doesn’t contain near as many security holes as Microsoft’s IE, meaning the chance of falling prey to browser hijackers and other such online vultures is slim to none. Patches are made available very quickly when problems do arise. Browsing is faster because you won’t have as much spyware clogging your computer’s arteries, making your trip down the information superhighway slower than molasses.
And of course, anyone who has tried to open multiple windows on Internet Explorer knows that tabbed browsing is the most convenient way to surf the web – it sure beats having a million separate browser windows open at once. Another great aspect of tabbed browsing on Firefox: when you open a window in tabs the browser doesn’t automatically take you to the new tab – instead, you remain at the original page. The latest version of Firefox even lets you move tabs around after opening them.
Alternative browsers can be a lot more fun than IE as well. Firefox, for instance, offers neat features such as live bookmarks, an integrated search bar, automatic software updates, and the ability to customize the browser by taking advantage of a number of available extensions.
As usual, the trimmed-down browsing experience means not all web pages can be accessed through Firefox. Lacking ActiveX support, this browser can’t display certain types of web pages, although the majority of websites can be viewed using Firefox.
Safari
For all you Apple users out there, Safari is your best bet for an alternative web browser. If you own a Mac, you probably already know about Safari, as it came bundled with Mac OS X, but it’s worth mentioning as an alternative to Internet Explorer simply because it is another option that works well for most web users.
Safari possesses all the usual browser features, such as bookmarks, but it also offers features people have come to expect from the other popular alternative web browsers currently on the market. The browser offers tabbed browsing and an integrated Google search box, similar to Firefox, and an automatic pop-up blocker. Again, like its competitors, Safari also offers a faster browsing experience for the keen Internet junkie.
Many Mac users prefer Safari to Internet Explorer for Mac for the same reasons more people have been flocking to Opera and Firefox. Overall, it makes the whole Internet experience faster, and the browser is very easy to use.

A Guide To Free Screensavers

Technorati Tags: screensavers,free screensavers,nature screensavers,animated screensavers

There are millions of Screensavers available on the Internet. Almost all of these can be downloaded and installed easily. These are usually categorized according to themes. Nature lovers can choose picturesque locations. Fish lovers can choose from different kinds of aquariums with multi-colored fish that are swishing through colored water. Those who really like adventure sports or aircraft can choose from a wide array of moving images and clips of death-defying stunts. Screensavers can also be slide shows that have various pictures of movie celebrities, sportspersons and politicians.
However, some precautions need to be taken before downloading Screensavers. The most important one is that Screensavers must be downloaded from trusted sites. It’s also always a good idea to scan Screensavers for viruses and other potentially dangerous elements, such as spyware and adware. If an anti-virus is already installed on the system, a right click enables a menu which provides for a ‘scan with…’ option. This option can be selected and left-clicked to check the selected download before double-clicking it and installing it.
Sometimes Screensavers are extremely graphic-intensive. This means that they contain so many graphics that they are huge files. Huge files take a lot of space on the computer when they run, and make the computer work so much harder and so much faster than normal that the computer freezes. Then the computer needs to be restarted and all the unsaved information on the computer -- such as open files that were being worked on before the Screensaver was activated – is lost.
Some Screensavers also make the hard drive of the computer crash, causing irretrievable data loss. Therefore, it is important for users to download Screensavers that are compatible with the configuration of their computers. This means that the speed of the processor in the computer, and the free space on it, should be sufficient for the Screensaver to be downloaded, installed and run.
Many users like to create their own Screensavers, often with the visuals and audio of their choice. Some software applications facilitate this. Out of these, some can be freely downloaded from the Internet. However, these should be downloaded only from trusted sites, and should be supported by the configuration of the user’s computer. Once downloaded, these should also be scanned for viruses and other common infections. When installed, these programs enable the user to combine images, video clips and audio clips to create a personalized Screensaver, sometimes even for circulation amongst friends and family.

Summary:
There are millions of Screensavers available on the Internet. Almost all of these can be downloaded and installed easily. These are usually categorized according to themes. Nature lovers can choose picturesque locations.
