Yemen Times launches news platform, restores lost archive using Newscoop

Yemen Times, the country's first and most widely-read independent English-language newspaper, has launched their new website yementimes.com and has begun to restore the largest online news database in Yemen. Having experienced severe technical difficulties that threatened the newspaper's online existence for more than two years, the newspaper collaborated with open source software developers Sourcefabric to build an entirely new platform.

The latest version of Sourcefabric's open source radio automation software now adds the ability to configure Icecast and Shoutcast streams in the browser, a button to listen to the station's output and multiple improvements to the playlist and calendar views.

The focus of Airtime 2.0 was to reduce the time and effort station managers and DJs spent on behind-the-scenes work, and thanks to the feedback of users we've been able to integrate many tasks into the Airtime interface. Configuring Icecast and SHOUTcast streams is just one of those things. We've also improved calendars, playlists and the media monitor in order to make everything that little bit easier and more intuitive.

The open source not-for-profit organisations FLOSS Manuals Foundation and Sourcefabric are pleased to announce their newly forged partnership to maintain and develop the code base behind FLOSS Manuals' successful free software documentation platform. Superdesk nominated for Ashoka Changemakers Innovation Contest

Superdesk is an open source newsroom tool being developed by Sourcefabric to bring converged newsroom technology to any news organisation. Out of 426 entries from 75 countries, Superdesk has been nominated for Ashoka's Citizen Media: A Global Innovation Competition, supported by Google. Eleven finalists will be open to a public vote with the deadline on Wednesday 23 November.

Sourcefabric has announced it has begun work on a new software called Superdesk, which joins Airtime and Newscoop in its suite of free, open source tools for independent media. Superdesk's aim is to allow news organisations to build flexible, scalable newsrooms and deliver content to any available platform. Superdesk has been nominated as a finalist in the Ashoka Changemakers Citizen Media Innovation award.

Tageswoche, an independent Swiss newspaper, has launched in Basel 14 months after the city's liberal Basler Zeitung was sold to unwanted investors. TagesWoche's editorial team of 30 professional journalists, including former 'BaZ' staff, promise to challenge the Swiss media landscape through an innovative daily online and weekly print model based on open source software.

Journalism goes open source at Mediafabric in Prague

Airtime 1.9.4 has been released with new DEB packages for Ubuntu and Debian that keep installations automatically updated with the latest version. Airtime 1.9.4 also includes the new file storage system with 'watch' folders, allowing stations to magically synchronise files and to easily browse their audio archives, as well as Shoutcast support, improved front-end widgets, and extensive bug-fixes.

Sourcefabric Extends News Design Contest Deadline

Airtime radio software wins Knight-Batten Innovation Award, announces new release.

Airtime, the open source radio software, is part of the West Africa Democracy Radio platform that has won a Knight-Batten Award for Innovations in Journalism. The developers Sourcefabric, who announced the release of Airtime 1.9 this week with over forty improvements, will attend a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington DC on September 7th 2011 to receive the $2000 Special Distinction prize.
