Sioux Falls Sidewalk Arts Festival
The Sidewalk Arts Festival is a one day festival held in historic downtown Sioux Falls. It is a fundraiser for the Visual Arts Center of the Washington Pavilion. It is a free event that features over 200 vendors from 10 states. The Sidewalk Arts Festival has a large food court, live entertainment throughout the festival, and a large variety of vendors: fine art, folk art, craft, and non-profit. Over 40,000 shoppers attend each year. Come join the fun.

Menu Planning Monday - The Better Late than Never Edition

I confess, I have been thinking about closing this blog up. I've given it a good try, but I am just not sure I have time for it.

Ultimately, I've decided to continue to forge on for now, primarily because of Menu Planning Monday.

If it weren't for MPM, I would not be as accountable to menu plan. When I don't menu plan, the week goes to South Dakota in a hand basket. :)

This week is the perfect storm: I have no desire to cook, barely anything premade in the freezer and a busy week. I was chanting, "Go out to eat. Go out to eat." just about 10 minutes ago. But I walked down to my freezer and just started pulling things out. Once it's thawing in the fridge, we have no choice but to eat it, want to or not.

As for Freekend events I am taking the lazy approach and telling everyone to just come out to the LIFELIGHT Music Festival at Wild Water West. It is free and of couse I have to admit I want everyone to bring their children out to the children's stage to catch Do Re Let's Play!

The children's stage also has free inflatables, free craft activities, a sheep, giant sandbox and entertainment for the kiddos!

Menu Planning Monday - 5 Minute Meals All Week!

This week, the kid and I are on our own. This is the most difficult challenge for our family, food wise. We either don't eat all and are crabby, or eat out every meal blowing our budget out of the water. Neither option works out well for us.

The only time we have a good week in this situation, is when I make very easy and very satisfying reheat and eat items and have them in the fridge. If I know I can have something we really like on the table in 5 minutes w/almost no dishes dirtied, I can usually avoid the previously mentioned two traps.

Here's what I did/am doing to make ahead components for a variety of 5 minute meals.

Saturday night I grilled hamburgers for dinner, and grilled a bunch extra to put in the fridge and reheat throughout the week.
Sunday night I baked a chicken, and we have 2/3's of the meat off that in the fridge to use in salads, sandwiches or tacos.
Monday, I am going to boil a box of pasta shells, to have in a bowl in the fridge for quick pasta servings. I'll also hard boil a half dozen eggs to have in the fridge for salads and snacks.
The kid and I will make a loaf of apple bread Monday as a fun activity. We could live off apple bread, so this is my ace in the hole.
We have tortillas, buns, apples, peaches, bananas, lettuce, carrots, rice, various salad dressings, chips, yogurt and granola in the fridge/pantry ready to eat.

Here's what I think we can do on the fly with those ingredients pre-cooked/ready to go.

Lunches and/or Dinners
Cold Veggie & Pasta salad w/apple bread
Chicken, Apple Pasta salad w/apple bread
Hamburgers & Salads
Hamburgers and Butter & Parm Noodles & veg??
Chicken Quesadillas w/guac w/fruit X2
Chicken Sandwiches and carrot sticks w/dip
Chicken, broccoli, and rice (stove top) casserole (OK, this is a 10 minute meal)
Apple Bread, yogurt & granola, hard boiled egg and/or carrot sticks
Sack lunch for park = ham or pb&j sandwiches, apples, eggs

Looking for something to do? Want to provide some family entertainment in our area without breaking the bank but there is not much going on to attend.

No problem! There are some great activities our area has to offer that don't cost a thing. Feel free to add more to the list if you have ideas as well by using the comments section of this post.

The Outdoor Campus

One thing our family enjoys is a trip to the Outdoor Campus. This is free! We usually start with a walk along the nature trails to spot various animals in nature. We bring along a bag of popcorn or old bread and feed the fish turtles and geese at the pond. We usually bring the camera for some great outdoor shots, being outdoors in nature provides the best backdrops for great shots, and costs much less than hiring a professional photographer. Early morning and sunset hours provide the best light for taking great shots! But you can get great shots anytime along the trails where the sunlight streams through the trees. We sometime pack a picnic lunch to bring along as well.
When we are done walking the trails, we head to the Outdoor Campus Building to learn about local wildlife from hands on exhibits, a giant freshwater aquarium, and other life wildlife including butterflies that hatch from their cocoons in the butterfly viewing room, or a life blue jay named hopper who lives inside the Outdoor campus.
My children usually don't even care that we are not going to Sertoma Park, which is just adjacent to the Outdoor Campus, because they enjoy the Outdoor Campus so much. It is a great family activity and if you have not ventured out to the Outdoor Campus yet, I suggest you check it out!

Ding Ding Ding goes the Trolley!

Did you know you can ride the trolley through downtown Sioux Falls for free? Yep! This is another of our free family activities. We usually start by parking at Falls Park, you can also hop on the trolley at the Washington Pavilion, but parking can bit a bit more difficult.
We explore the falls and climb the tower; all free, then hop on the trolley and enjoy a ride through historic downtown Sioux Falls. You can even enjoy the sculptures on Sculpture walk while on your ride. The trolley will stop anywhere you ask. These are some of our favorite free stops on our ride.

The Museum of Visual Materials.
Fun free place to visit in one of the oldest building in Sioux Falls, but not has been converted to one of the "Green"est with solar panels and other "Green" aspects. The main room has many bookshelves with different items and books from throughout the years. Now you must be thinking what do my young children do there? Well on the bottom shelf of each bookshelf is just for kids. There are toys from throughout the years! Matchbox Cars, barbies, stuffed animals, a box full of eggs you can sort by color and size(one of my kids favorites), a bunch of troll dolls, and other interesting toys and items from the past all there free to touch and play with. There is even a room off the main room that has a shelves for different countries around the world! They love visitors, so just stop in and explore!

The Courthouse Museum!

They actually have a couple of really fun exhibits right now. A fifties dinner exhibit that has a soda shop counter, a booth with a jukebox complete with 50's music choices, aprons and fake burgers and fries so your little ones can play waiter and take your order, and even a dive up option with a half a car door you can order from! Great fun!
They also have an exhibit on Corn! Yep Corn. You can learn everything you ever wanted to know about corn. How heavy is a bushel, you can actually try to lift one and see! Sit in the seat of a combine and harvest the corn, and see a giant corn that reaches to the ceiling!
This with the fur and trapper exhibit, wedding dress exhibit, and Native American beading exhibit make it a pretty fun and educational place to hang out for the day!

The Washington Pavilion Art Room

This room is located on the second floor of the Washington Pavilion on the opposite side from the Discovery Center. It is a fun room painted with bright colors. Here you can build a giant Duplo Lego house you can actually play in, put on puppet shows, make an art project with free materials provided. Weave a tapestry, work on artwork puzzles, listen to music, and much more! It is a really great and fun room and it is free! They do not even advertize this room on their website! It is a great area secret!

If I were cooking from the Hy-Vee ad starting 8/19, I'd shop the three day sale Thursday - Saturday and buy a whole chicken, whole ham and whole pork loin that were the right size for my family to get at least two meals out of each of them.

I would see if any of my peeps had overproduction in their garden they were looking to share, and if not, I'd buy what I could afford of seasonal produce at the farmer's market.

Menu Planning Monday - The "I Don't Want To!" Edition

In honor of my cranky 3.5 year old, I am calling this the "I Don't Want To!" menu plan. As in, I don't want to menu plan!!! Translated: Can't we just eat out?????

Good thing I have Menu Planning Mondays to keep me on the straight and narrow:

Dinners:

Spaghetti
Steak Sandwiches w/ potatoes and onions
Chicken Tacos & Rice and broccoli
Chicken in the crock pot w/baked potatoes and broccoli
Spicy Chicken Salads w/warm bread and honey
Roast in the crock pot w/corn on the cob
Sausage, Egg & Cheese Egg bake, banana muffins, fruit smoothies

These meals are all from my freezer and pantry. The only items I need to purchase are some hoagie buns for the steak sandwiches, some plain yogurt, and the corn on the cob.

Believe it or not, my freezer is getting pretty bare. Well, I have coleslaw and broccoli and round steak out the wahzoo, but everything else is dwindling. I am even down to my last 7#'s of hamburger, so no way I can even make my staple meatballs . . . things are gonna get interesting around here I think.

The good news is I have plenty of room to buy Papa Murphy's pizzas on Tuesdays and store them! I usually don't have space for that.

Catalina Coupons at Hy-Vee & Tombstone Pizza Rebate

Soccermom reports she received the following catalina coupons (coupons that print at the register when you check out and can be used on your next order (OYNO)) at Hy-Vee this week.

Buy 2 Velveeta Shells and Cheese between 8/14 and 9/7, and get a $1 OYNO coupon.

Buy 2 Kleenex (on sale for $0.99 each) and get a coupon for $0.75 off a 3 pk bundle.

Tombstone Pizzas on sale 4/$11: Valid 8/14 - 9/6
Buy 6 pizzas, get a $5 OYNO coupon
Buy 5 pizzas, get a $4 OYNO coupon
Buy 4 pizzas, get $3 OYNO coupon.

Combine this deal with the Tombstone rebate HERE. Note the details, but you can buy these on multiple receipts and you have until 1/15/2010 send everything in, including a copy of a utility bill. Your rebate will come as a credit to the utility acct you indicate.

Buy 7 12" pizzas get $5 credit
Buy 12 12" pizzas and get $10 credit
Buy 17 12" pizzas and get $15 credit

The way this whole thing would come together:

Buy 6 for $16.50, get $5 OYNO coupon. Do this 3 times.
I'm not sure if this would roll - meaning I'm not sure if you could pay with for the second order with the $5 OYNO coupon, and still get another $5 OYNO coupon.

Final cost after utility credit rebate, and OYNO coupons: $19.50, or $1.08 per pizza!!
Remember, you have until 1/15/2010, just save your receipts and proofs of purchases.

I haven't been able to look at them yet . . . but here are some links for you to use to start making your list.

My advice is to stick to things that are free or nearly free after coupons . . . unless you are sure that it's a killer deal.

You can use 10 coupons and your order has to hit $25, so it doesn't hurt to do a little pre-planning.

Once you have your list, know what your best 10 (free!) items will be, and know that your total (before coupons!) will be $25, put those 10 coupons in an envelope, and get ready to go shopping!

I like to pick out a few back up items, items I'd like to get, in case anything on my first list is out of stock.

**I haven't actually verified our stores are for sure participating, but I'm guessing they will be, since they have participated every time so far.

Because of the Buy $40 Get $15 Promo and the Fuel For School Rebate, I hit right at a $100 purchase (before coupons!) - so I also got to use a $5 off $100 Hy-Vee coupon from RecycleBank. All tolled, I used $30 in coupons, and got back a $15 OYNO coupon and will get $1o in rebates. Not bad at all.

Looks like there will be more FREE Cereal at Kmart this week. Details to follow.
