My grandson, Dylan, loves this place and he thinks they have the best fries. I checked out the website and discovered that this burger joint started out as just Boardwalk Fries; adding the "decadent" burgers later on.

This place is just another of the many new-style hamburger joints that are popping up as the hamburger frenzy keeps going. Much the same as Five Guys and Burger Fi that are also opening up new locations weekly.

I think the single and double patty idea is about worn out. All they are doing now is adding all sorts of unique and sometimes oddball toppings.

I came to Boardwalk for a burger and fries on a Sunday night at 7:45pm. I guess it would take a trip or two to really understand how to order. They have a list of "free" add-ons and a list that are "not free." If you add on a few extras it could get a little pricey. My total cost for a double burger, medium fries, drink and tax was almost eleven bucks.

The place was empty except for a gentleman waiting outside for his take-out order as he talked on his phone. I tried a double burger, no cheese, with lettuce, tomato, red onions, and pickles.

The hamburger was prepared fresh, just like the other places mentioned above. It was well done and built pretty well with the patties centered properly. One of my pet peeves is getting a burger that is sticking out of the bun on one side and you have to rebuild it before taking a bite. It was juicy and tasty but by the third bite I realized that the mustard was left off. Both employees were missing so I continued sans mustard. I would say that the burger was not any better than a Five Guys or a Burger Fi burger.

I was really expecting that the fries were going to knock my socks off, but I was wrong. I ordered a medium, but I think the server "super sized" me for some reason because I could only finish about 2/3 of them. They didn't seem fresh; like maybe they were made an hour before and they had a little after taste. I definitely like the Five Guys fries better.

I chose to eat in and for the twenty minutes I was there not another soul walked in and when I left I saw that they would be open for another two hours! I hope the traffic is better during the day.

The bottom line is that there's not anything special here. Decent burger and fries, but nothing exceptional unless your looking to add some decadent add-ons.

Charm City Burger Company

Charm City Burger Company's name has been popping up on almost every food blog in South Florida so I thought I really should check them out. I drove right by the place on Hillsboro Blvd in East Deerfield, hit the brakes and swung into the parking lot. I was lucky enough to find a spot around back and walked past the garbage dumpster through the advertised rear door and fell right into the "order here" line.

The place is small, maybe seats twenty or so, and has that "beachy" super laid back atmosphere that you would expect from a walk in place not too far from the surf.
I already knew that I was only interested in getting a hamburger and the same for Michelle. She ordered the "Good Ole" combo. Just a burger with American cheese, lettuce, and tomato; well done (their term is hammered), with fries and a drink for $8.25.

Cowboy Style with thick cut bacon, cheddar, sauteed mushrooms and grilled onions

I got the "Cowboy Style" combo: thick cut bacon, cheddar cheese, sauteed mushrooms and grilled onions, also with fries and a drink for $9.75. This burger was juicy and I needed a couple of napkins before I was finished. Both burgers were cooked perfectly and tasted great. The hand cut fries were also very good.

I love burgers and Charm City Burger Company makes one of the best I've had in South Florida. If you are ever "jonesing" for a great tasting hamburger try this place out and I'm sure you will return again and again. Look for me there!

Gilbert's 17th Street Grill

Gilbert's is a little hard to find. It's tucked away in the Harbor Shops of Ft. Lauderdale which is not on 17th street at all. The address is actually 1821 Cordova Road.

I've been there a few times for some family events and was pretty satisfied with the food. But my son sent me a picture of a burger that he enjoyed there and suggested that I stop by and sample one.

Michelle and I popped over the same night that the Miami Heat was playing and there were tons of people standing in line at Duffy's across the parking lot. Gilbert's was very busy also but we were still able to get in and order pretty quickly.

When you enter you go to a counter and place your order which is prepared and then delivered to your table. Our order taker introduced himself as a member of the Gilbert family and said "nobody takes better care of you than family." I was already quite impressed and when I asked "what is the best hamburger to order," he replied with no hesitation, "the brie burger, with bacon and fried onions."

I added an order of fries and Michelle ordered a jumbo kosher hot dog with fries and a couple of self serve fountain drinks. Michelle thought her hot dog was average but complained to me about the fries. She thought they were too greasy and a little "rubbery."

My hamburger was amazing! Cooked perfectly with all the components piled on top. I thoroughly enjoyed it and vowed to be back soon.

If you are in the mood for a great burger I highly recommend Gilbert's 17th Street Grill.

I finally got a chance to pop into David Korn's Between the Bun in Boynton Beach. It's just east of I95 in the opposite end of the Publix shopping center on Gateway Blvd. Even though it was almost closing time, Dave and his Dad invited us in. They both go way back in NY deli history having owned a few delis in lower Manhattan.

Hotdogs with fries

When we arrived Dave was making a Roumanian steak sandwich for himself and offered a slice for me to try. The medium rare marinated steak was excellent and I instantly knew I would be coming back to this place many more times.

They have so many tempting things it was hard for me to stick to my plan but that little voice inside me kept reminding me that I was here to try the hamburger. I ordered up my BTB 8oz burger without cheese and "run through the garden" along with their signature, now locally famous crinkle cut fries.

As close to Nathan's that it gets says one South Florida blogger about the hand cut fries. They were delicious. Unfortunately, since I didn't grow up in New York, I can't compare them to the originals of Coney Island.

My hand packed patty was great, cooked perfectly, and with that wonderful gas grill taste that I love. A thinly sliced onion with lettuce and tomato loaded on the bottom were easy to maneuver to the top, along with a slather of mustard. Perfecto!

Michelle ordered a salad with chicken and was very pleased. Dave even offered her a couple of pieces of rye bread to go with the salad. She was really happy to be able to get a can of her favorite Dr. Brown's diet black cherry soda.

Next time I'm going to try the Roumanian Steak sandwich, then the hot dogs, the roast beef, the grilled chicken, the egg salad the.......

Smokehouse Burger from Grand Tavern Delray

I had read online that the Grand Tavern had some breakout burgers and I wish I had the appetite to taste them all. Since I could only try one burger on this visit, I requested the recommendation of our server, Daniel, who we found out is a student at FIU. Daniel, without hesitation, suggested the SmokeHouse Burger: 1/2 lb. burger topped with smoked bacon, melted cheddar cheese & crispy onion rings and a side of homemade potato chips. I agreed and ordered a PBR and an appetizer (in the name of science - taste test.)

Yes, they have Pabst Blue Ribbon on tap. A throwback to my college drinking days. To compliment the beer I got the Buffalo Chicken Dip: mixed cheeses and Buffalo style chicken served with toasted pita chips for dipping. The dip was very hot and VERY cheesy. The pita chips were crisp and seasoned perfectly. I wasn't too fond of the dip so after a couple of tastes I asked for a "to-go" box. Michelle commented that her salad was quite fresh and crispy.

After a short wait the burger arrived (with another PBR) and it looked stunning! Michelle laughed that there was no way I would get it in my mouth. She was correct so I mashed it down forgetting that I had not yet taken a picture.

The Tastes and Textures Exploded in My Mouth like an Atom Bomb

The burger did not appear to be a freshly hand formed patty, but when I took a bite I really didn't care. I got a full mouthful of flavors exploding on my palate like an atom bomb. Smoked bacon, cheese, burger, onion rings and bun all providing different textures at the same time. It was delicious. I ate half and packed the rest to go and enjoy the next day.

I had a very nice experience at the Grand Tavern and I think you should give it a try. They have only been open a few months and I think the food will get even better over time. Give them a try and tell them you read about it here!

Champps Americana

I've been going to Champps Americana for several years, mostly for lunch because it is close to my workplace. I've eaten my way across the menu and have tried almost everything on it! They are described as a "sports bar" and the walls are covered with television coverage of all the days events. But the food is definitely way past sports bar.

When you read the history about Lindburgers you will see that they have been serving great burgers in Delray Beach since 1983. I was lucky enough to have tasted their burgers in late 1985 for my first visit and little did I know that I would be moving to Delray seventeen years later. Now I can go whenever I want!

Lindburgers is a really, really cute restaurant. It is quite small; several booths along the wall and 10 or twelve "four-tops" fill the place up. The walls, counters, and tabletops are all decorated with cute aeronautical phrases, pictures, and paraphernalia. Enough to keep you busy for at least three or four visits.

I was in the mood for a good burger last Sunday night so once again I made my way to the NW corner of Military and Atlantic in Delray. It was almost 8pm so the early bird crowd was already home and under the covers. The better for me as there was no wait and we were seated immediately.

Lisa, our server, took our order and brought our drinks. In addition to the 50 gourmet burgers that they list on the menu they offer a plethora of soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, and platters. I started with a cup of really good split pea soup. It needed some salt and pepper, but otherwise was good. I guess they have to make it kind of bland for the geriatric clientele who probably are all on low salt diets so anytime something has salt in it they think it tastes "salty." On this occasion I ordered #50, the "Truck Stop" burger. For an extra 99 cents I upgraded to a 10 oz. instead of the standard 7 oz. patty. It comes with lettuce, tomato, sliced raw onion, and mayonnaise on the side. I added some sweet pickle relish and an order of thick cut french fries. Yum!

Michelle ordered a chicken quesadilla and it was big enough to choke a horse. She said it was exceptionally good and took half home to eat at another time. In the past we have tried many of their different burgers and found them all to be top notch. For an extra treat try their onion rings or sweet potato fries.

I have never had a bad meal here and for a restaurant to still be around after all these years says something for their good food, good atmosphere, and good service. World's Largest Hamburger

Just like the tallest buildings and the longest SUV's there is a never ending battle to build the largest hamburger. Once again the record has been broken. This time on July 3, 2011 at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, CA.

The record breaker weighed in at a very impressive 777 pounds including all the trimmings. It took 13 hours for the ten person crew to actually cook the burger alone. Breaking the former world record by 187 pounds, the new contender is awaiting documentation from Guinness World Records.

It was a Saturday night about 7:30 pm and I was in the Aventura area going to a pizza joint recommended by a fellow blogger. I was disappointed when I drove by to see that the place was closed. Saturday night? 7:30 pm?

Honky Tonk Woman: Full size burger topped with Pulled Pork, Cheddar Cheesse, Fried Pickles, & Cole Slaw

I needed a new place to go to and remembered hearing that "top chef" Howie Kleinberg's new Bulldog Burger in North Miami was open and just a couple of miles down US 1 to 154th Street. I was in the mood for a good burger anyway.

The sweet aroma of bbq hit me as soon as I opened the door and I knew I was going to have a gastronomically good time. The burger joint is in the next bay of the strip center attached to Howie's other restaurant, Bulldog BBQ. In fact, you enter through the bbq restaurant into an adjoining room where there are several tables with chairs.

The place is clean and not over decorated; with framed chef paraphernalia touting the owner's tv persona. We were pleasantly greeted and served our drinks while we checked out the menu which consisted of a single sheet attached to the front of the bbq menu. It contained about eight different signature burgers. I was practically drooling as I looked over the list and chose the $9 Black Angus Burger. Michelle isn't really big on burgers so she chose a $20 8oz skirt steak but we were shocked when our server explained that both items came with no sides. I added fries for $4 and Michelle got an ear of corn for an additional $2. Michelle's did come with cornbread.

The burger was better than average and worth the $9 but a little pricey when you add an order of fries and it comes to $13. Michelle stated that she never heard of a skirt steak coming without sides. When we got home we checked out the menu online and found that the skirt steak does indeed come with sides: (Served with Carolina Slaw, Cornbread, and Choice of Side)

If the menu has changed Chef Kleinberg needs to get on the ball and update his website with the new pricing.

The bottom line: Good food, good service. Some outside eating on an overcrowded walkway. Some people might not like having to walk closely to large dogs lounging in the walkway where they have to step over them to get to and from the front door.

BurgerFi has taken Five Guys Burgers to the next level. Located on A1A about 50 feet south of Commercial in Fort Lauderdale this eatery is attracting a lot of attention from the beach dwellers and landlubbers alike. This location has plenty of parking and that's a positive because the midday Sunday traffic in this area was ridiculous.

We were a party of five and you just grab a chair or bench wherever you can. It's an air conditioned open store with plenty of overhead fans and even though it was in the nineties on the street we were not uncomfortable. Similar to Five Guys, you go through a line to place your order and they buzz you when it's ready to pick up. Fresh ground patties, single, double, or triple stacked. There are more choices than 5 Guys and they have given some cutesy names to some of their signature burgers.

It takes a little longer to order here because of all the extra choices you have to wade through to make your decision. They even have a veggie burger for our beef challenged friends, and a half veggie/half angus for people who aren't sure if they really want to be a vegan.

We all agreed that the burgers had great taste and texture, good fresh ground beef and fresh toppings. The fries were excellent and the onion rings were superb! I added a Coffee Mocha shake for "dessert" but found the price tag to be a little steep.

Our seat near the street was perfect for people watching and this area has a lot of good people watching available. Can we have too many burger joints? Give BurgerFi a try and let me know what you think.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries

I've been going to Five Guys since they opened their location on Congress Avenue in Boynton Beach. Their claim to fame is that all their burgers are prepared from fresh ground beef. They don't even have a freezer, just a cooler.

I really like going to Five Guys for a few reasons:
1. They believe in the K.I.S.S. formula. And I'm not talking Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. I am talking about Keep It Simple, Stupid! A burger, with cheese and/or bacon. 15 toppings. Fries and a drink. Or a hotdog.
2. I think fresh ground beef just tastes better.
3. I like the complimentary peanuts.
4. They know how to serve great tasting fries. In a cup of course. A cup that overflows and half fills up your to go bag. I made a mistake and ordered a large size fries once. Can you say "too much?"

But there is one thing that I don't like about Five Guys. Their standard burger is a "double." That is two fresh ground patties stacked on the bun. I would prefer one large patty instead, so I usually get two of the little burgers (with fries of course!)

Five Guys is a refreshing (pun intended) upgrade to the usual fast food hamburger joints and if you are a hamburger lover Five Guys must be on your radar.

Hamburgers are one of my favorite meals and I’m always looking for a place that serves a good one. Fuddruckers "World Famous Hamburgers" is the best! If you’re looking for a little more than the average 4 oz burger that cooks down to 3 ounces, Fuddruckers is the place. I usually go for the two-thirds burger, medium. I prefer a hamburger, not cheeseburger, not bacon burger, not mushroom and onion burger. On my last visit the burger was cooked perfectly. I love their self-serve condiment bar, where I loaded up with shredded lettuce, tomato, pickles, diced onions and jalapenos. I complimented with an order of steak fries.

The Keg South

Consistently voted as one of South Florida’s best hamburgers, Keg South will show major sporting events 7 days a week. You can enjoy your burger while watching 6 flat screen plasma TV’s full of all of the best sports action. If sports aren’t your game, pardon the pun; try your hand at one of the pool tables. But it’s the burgers that will keep you coming back for more. If you’re brave, try to eat up the ¾ pound keg burger with all the fixins.

Charm City Burgers

Charm City certainly has small-town “charm.” The premium steak burgers can be had in a variety of styles including “cowboy, volcano, or the big sloppy.” Add everything from thick-cut bacon, fried egg, hash brown, and other things. You might also like the carnival style desserts including “oreo fritters or a charm sundae.”

Gilbert's 17th Street Grill

While you may not think burger when you first head there, it’s been rated as the top burger in Broward County in the past few years and only uses certified Angus beef. The Gilbert family has owned the store for the last 10 years and a family member is always on site and will open their kitchen to anyone. Try the Angus burger with sautéed mushroom & onions, or the Angus Beef Crumbled Bleu Cheese Stuffed Burger for a taste you won’t soon forget.

Tobacco Road

Tobacco Road has survived countless hurricanes and has remained open in Miami since 1912. It’s Miami’s oldest bar and restaurant, and if you’ve been open that long, you’ve got to have a great burger to go along with the live music. If you’re brave, or morbid, try the “Death Burger,” which has sautéed onions, jalapeno peppers, and melted jalapeno jack cheese. Probably a good idea to have a glass of milk beside you to get that one down.

Kingdom (Yelp says it's CLOSED)

Kingdom is located just past Legion Park on Biscayne Blvd, and even if you live in Homestead, it’s worth a drive to enjoy one of the burgers. The best nights to go are Monday, Friday, and Sunday, but you can enjoy happy hour with casual attire. The burgers will have you salivating for more, so get ready to loosen your belt and dive in face first into one of the tasty burgers.
