Congressman Cohen presented a variety of items that are currently happening in the South Main historic district. Congressman Cohen also spoke about a number of items currently in the works that may soon affect our neighborhood. He also reminded the group that he was instrumental in passing the open container law for special events in the South Main district. This allows groups hosting special events – like the South Main Association Trolley Tours – to include alcohol as part of the event. Congressman Cohen was very informative and highlighted some exciting developments for our beautiful historic area. The Main Street to Main Street project which Congressman Cohen is working on will help revitalize, beautify and connect our city. We were happy to see so many of our members gather to hear him speak. We are excited to see what Congressman Cohen can do in conjunction with the Main Street to Main Street Multi-Modal Connector Project, a federally-funded program designed to revitalize our downtown. The South Main Association and its members cannot wait to be part of this exciting project.

South Main Association got a sneak peak at this new Memphis treasure because they were the host of our May 2012 monthly membership meeting. Our speaker was Linn Sitler, Memphis and Shelby County Film and Television Commissioner. She told many great stories of how Memphis movie making began and how the corner of GE Patterson and South Main became a favorite of film producers. She helped us realize how important and how much history we have right here in our own neighborhood. And now with the Memphis Railroad and Trolley Museum we have even more history to share. South Main is really coming alive and we hope you will bring your friends to show them all of what we have to offer. Click here for Memphis Railroad & Trolley Museum website with hours and prices or to donate.

Recently, the South Main Association took part in “Hook Up to Clean Up”, a volunteer event focused on cleaning up Downtown Memphis. Three areas were targeted as part of the Great American Cleanup initiative – South Main, the Riverfront and Uptown. Volunteer registration began promptly at 9 am to get our teams organized for the event. We’re proud to say that on April 14, 2012, we had 87 volunteers arrive at three locations to help beautify our city. Our generous and eager volunteers helped make this event a success while making our city even better. The volunteers’ time was rewarded both with a rejuvenated cityscape as well as a post-clean up party.
