So was that my psychic side coming out in my last blog? Not only has Warner Music Entertainment announced that Hugh Laurie’s debut blues album will be out in Spring 2011 but, Tom Jones will be one of his duet guests – I did mention Tom in the same paragraph as Hugh didn’t I?

Well, it remains to be seen, or heard, what James Hugh Calum Laurie OBE will do to the blues but I’m not so sure he should have chosen Tom Jones to help kick start this epoch of his varied career. However, looking at the comments on his Facebook page the ladies seem to like the idea. Stay tuned.

Sadly bluesman Albert "Little Smokey" Smothers passed away on Saturday 20 November 2010 aged 71. The talented Chicago guitarist had had a lengthy illness.
Born in Tchula, Mississippi on 2 January 1939 he later moved to Chicago, on the heals of his big brother Otis "Big Smokey" Smothers (I assume there was just the two of them!!!).

Through the years Little Smokey accompanied Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, and Magic Sam - and a few others - both on stage and in the recording studio.
Influential in helping Paul Butterfield form his blues band he also mentored Elvin Bishop, who later took his place in the band. This collaboration with Elvin Bishop led to the 2000 recording of "That's My Partner".
Smothers final recording was in 2009 with "Chicago Blues Buddies", the proceeds from which went to help offset his growing medical expenses. R.I.P.

Four years after she released any new music, the wait is finally over and if there was ever a song fitting for Amy Winehouse’s trials and tribulations it is Lesley Gore's 1963 hit ‘It’s My Party’. Laid down in April with Mark Ronson for a Quincy Jones tribute album, doubts may remain about the coherence of her wandering vocal but there's little denying its enduring aura, all dressed-up in the producer's typically authentic sound. But is this cover enough to rebuild her shattered career? I suspect it is back to black for Amy!

Long known as the "devil's music," thanks to the legend surrounding bluesman Robert Johnson's alleged deal with the devil at a Mississippi crossroads, "Old Nob," as he's known, has become firmly identified with blues music. The devil is often just a metaphor used by blues singers to describe a cheatin' woman, a bad boss, or even the evil in the world, and not a literal being. Still, from his first appearance in Clara Smith's 1924 song "Done Sold My Soul To The Devil," the devil persists in the culture of the blues.

Marking the 100^th anniversary of the birth of Mr Robert Johnson is the “Blues at the Crossroads” tour starting January 2011 in San Francisco. On tour will be the “Two Man Wrecking Crew” of Cedric Burnside and Lightnin' Malcolm, original Delta bluesman (and friend of Robert Johnson) David “Honeyboy” Edwards, and the great Hubert Sumlin (former Howlin' Wolf guitarist).

Winding its way through the States the “Blues at the Crossroads” tour is currently scheduled to complete in March 2011 in Urbana, Illinois. Other venues and dates may be added. If anyone is listening out there – don't forget us in Europe.

Oh, I almost forgot, there will be an accompanying tour album – of course.

Pink Floyd

Yes, I know that Pink Floyd was not a blues band but there are blues links. The blues influenced Syd Barrett and, Gilmour's solo style is often characterised by blues-influenced phrasing. And, of course, the name was concocted by Barrett combining the names of Pink Anderson and Floyd Council when, in a blind panic, he had to find an alternative band name to The Teas Set – hence Pink Floyd was born. A miracle really. Can you imagine a band called The Tea Set making ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ or ‘The Wall’? No, nor can I.

Anyway, the Pink Floyd legend lives on with a handful of tribute bands and, arguably the best (up to now) is the Australian Pink Floyd Tribute Band (which I have had the pleasure to have seen play in Lisbon, Portugal in 2008). But, allegedly, a problem has occurred whereby the Aussie members of the band do not want to go on tour in the USA. Perhaps unknown to their American audience the band that they see during this major annual tour is made up almost exclusively of Brits and does not feature the Aussie artists at all. This, as you can imagine, has caused some problems that have

resulted in the members that do tour the States forming a breakaway band called The British Pink Floyd Show (or Brit Floyd for short).

Confused? Well, there’s more. The Brits have just completed their final USA tour as the Aussie Floyd band and they have returned to the UK and will re-appear as Brit Floyd ready to start their inaugural tour of the UK early in 2011.

Willie Nelson has been charged with possession of pot. Apparently his tour bus was pulled over at a check-point set up in Sierra Blanca, Texas. The arresting officer said he could smell pot when he opened the door of the bus. Willie was held for a short while whilst he arranged a $2,500 bond.

A three-day festival on the banks of Loch Ness, in the village of Dores, Scotland, during 10-12 June 2011 will headline Paolo Nutini.

Festival director Jim King said: “We have always said that RockNess is about delivering the best performers. Paolo has proven across his two albums that he is the best act of his generation to come out of Scotland and he is way to becoming one of the very best acts in the world”.

Just as many have celebrated John Lennon’s 70^th birthday it has been announced that his hand written lyrics of "I’m Only Sleeping" will go on sale at Bonhams auctioneers. The lyrics, which he had written on the back of a letter chasing payment for a radio phone bill, are expected to raise between $400 – 560,000. The sale is on 15 December so you’d better get moving.

Meanwhile iTunes have come to the end of a long and winding road and now have Beatles for sale on their web based iTunes Store. All 13 studio albums – from “Sgt. Peppers’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” to “Revolver” to “The White Album” are now available.

During the first week of sales iTunes sold more than 2 million individual songs and more than 450,000 albums. “Abbey Road” was the top selling album and “Here Comes The Sun” the top selling single.

Convicted of exposing himself, on stage, at a 1969 concert in Miami, Jim Morrison of the Doors may be pardoned.

Gov. Charlie Crist, whose favourite Doors song is “Light My Fire”, has said that evidence maybe flimsy. Doors keyboardist Ray Manzareck said Morrison put a shirt in front of his crotch and wiggled his hand behind it. He briefly pulled the shirt away and said, “I just showed you. Did you see it?”

Morrison was found guilty in 1970 of indecent exposure and fined $500 with a six month jail sentence. But he never did do the time. He was appealing his conviction when he was found dead in a bathtub in Paris in 1971. He was just 27 years old.

Govenor Crist plans to ask Florida Cabinet members to support a pardon. “My heart just bleeds for his legacy and his family” says Crist.

Marking the 40^th anniversay of Jimi Hendrix’s death the box set of “West Coast Seattle Boy: The Jimi Hendrix Anthology” is on the shelf this month. Featuring four discs of previously unreleased material and alternate takes, they include a full disc of pre-Experience tracks recorded with Little Richard, the Isley Brothers, Don Covay and others.

The box set also includes the documentary “Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child” narrated by Bootsy Collins.

Coming out on the same day are deluxe editions of “Jimi Hendrix Experience:BBCSessions”, Jimi Hendrix Blues”, and “Live At Woodstock”.

Responsible for all this is Jimi’s sister Janie Hendrix who is president and CEO of Experience Hendrix.

Janie says that next year will bring a documentary about Hendrix’s 1969 concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall. “It’s kind of a day in the life of Jimi, how we put it together” she says of the project, which has been two years in the making.

Gibson recently unveiled their “Top 50 Acoustic Guitarists of All Time” with Belgium born Django Reinhardt taking the number 1 slot. Robert Johnson made number 4, Jimmy Page was 17^th, and Eric Clapton got in at 41 on the list.

Being dead does not stop the wheels of commerce turning. “Hold My Hand”, a duet recorded by Michael Jackson and rapper-producer Akon went on sale this month. The song was first recorded in 2007.

Sony will also release a 10 track album “Michael” (to include “Hold My Hand”) on 14 December.

Another new track “Breaking News” from the upcoming album has met with skepticism by some music critics and Jackson’s family members who are reported to have said that they do not believe the vocals on “Breaking News” really belong to the King of Pop.

The Who are to perform alongside Jeff Beck, Blondie singer Debbie Harry and The Verve’s Richard Ashcroft in a charity concert to raise money for research into a little-known cancer treatment called Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). The stars will appear at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo, London on 13 January 2011.

And finally in the news, Rolling Stone Keith Richards is fed up with his junkie image.

Talking about his book “Life” he said: “You get stuck with an image, part of the whole reason for the book was to dispel some of the junkie, dopey, rock and roll … it’s not like that at all. Hey, I can get crazy but I aint’t stupid”

He also explains that he wrote to Tony Blair backing him in his decision to go to war in Iraq. Yep, Keith, you are well and truly stuck with the image!

Back to Blues

Some 40 years after meeting her hero, Cyndi Lauper got the opportunity to work with 85 years old B.B. King.

Her first meeting with B.B. King was in the 1970’s when she was a student at Johnstone State College, Vermont, USA.

Being a school radio DJ the Blues had made an enormous impression on her. So much so her latest, and 11^th, album is “Memphis Blues”.

Not many would have linked the pop queen with the mighty, talented, veteran King but their love of Blues has brought them together.

Cyndi Lauper says that she has wanted to make a Blues album for more than a decade but has only recently found time to put everything together and get down to Memphis.

The 12 tracks are gritty, in the style of a Beale Street blues singer jamming in smokey juke joints. Inspired by the Memphis Civil Rights Museum she says that Memphis was the only place to be to cut this album. It represents the crossroads in American culture and music. “I wanted to be in Memphis. I wanted to eat the food, breathe the air, see the sites, walk the walk.”

Cyndi Lauper hooked up with Scott Bomar, a local musician and producer, who worked with Al Green and Charlie Feathers among many other local and national acts. He helped her assemble a “who’s who” of Memphis musicians to back her up on the album. In addition to Allen Toussaint, Ann Peebles, and Charlie Musselwhite, “Memphis Blues” also features the infamous Hi Rhythm Section and all-stars from Stax and Satellite Records.

Charlie Musselwhite harps the blues in the first track “Just Your Fool”, and a trio of B.B. King, Allan Toussaint, and Cyndi Lauper provide an up-beat little song called “Early In The Morning”.

Track 8 is a version of the classic “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” and features Ann Peebles. The more I play this the more I like it.

It’s not earth shattering but is a good album to own. The girl has done good and – the girl has had fun !!!

Bonjour tout le monde,

There’s loads of stuff in the news right now. Can you believe it? Hugh Laurie says he wants to sing the blues! Even 70 years old Tom Jones has released (some time ago now) “Praise & Blame” in an attempt to reinvent his gospel/blues roots – and I thought he was from Cardiff.

Is this the start of a new era of celebrity talent finding themselves with The Blues – will we soon be seeing “(your country)’s Got Blues Talent” or “Blues Factor”?

And Keith Richards claims he has not been to Mick Jagger’s dressing room in 20 years! Lucky old Mick I say!

Sadly, Solomon Burke died on October 10 aged 70. Arguably the first man of “soul” he was a big man in every way; big on food, big on religion, and he leaves more than 80 grandchildren.

October 9 would have been John Lennon’s 70^th birthday had he not been gunned down outside his New York apartment on December 8, 1980. A lot of Lennon’s early stuff was Blues orientated and what about “Imagine”? Is that not blues?

Amy Winehouse (translates to Amy Cave in French!!) wants kids and also claims to have been drug free for 3 years. Anyway, to prove that she is still a real person, 27- year old Amy climbed up on stage at her local pub, the Hawley Arms in Camden, London, and gave a pitch perfect rendition of “Tears Dry On Their Own”. Apparently it was a charity gig and she just turned up and joined in. Well done, Amy. I wish other so-called super stars would follow your lead.

Coming out from the recording machinery is a much anticipated second round of Jimi Hendrix archive material – to be released October. And Backbeat Books has published a 256-page hardback “Day by Day, Night after Night” by Craig Hopkins which will be the first in a two volume set to trace the complete career of Stevie Ray Vaughan 20 years after his tragic death on August 27, 1990

Just over 11 years after another tragic death of a legendry singer, I have been drawn to listen to Dusty Springfield’s “Dusty in Memphis”

Ask your dinner guests, as they sup your finest Bordeaux, what they remember of the much loved “Rusty Springboard” and it is odds on that they will recall the hits “I Only Want To Be With You” or “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” or “Wishin’ And Hopin” or any of the dozens of 60’s tracks she is famed for. It is unlikely that mention will be made of her releases in French, German and even Italian, but someone might just remember her for her blues classic “Son Of A Preacher Man” which was a huge hit following her recording session at Atlantic Records in Memphis, Tennessee.

Even Dusty said “I rather associated Memphis with one kind of sound, a hard R & B sound. That’s not the thing I can do, and I’d rather leave it to those who can”. What followed was a landmark album that has assumed legendary critical status.

And, if you have heard Dusty’s hit single “Son Of A Preacher Man” (you must have?), you will know that the Memphis sessions revealed something new in her singing not heard before – a certain vulnerability that is quite moving and attractive.

So often in contemporary music emotions are expressed by screaming, grunting, and frankly, going out of tune. Plus, of course, the use of electronics to achieve supernatural vocal effects. On this album Dusty’s voice brings you a simple quality that seems quite miraculous these days.

A real cool, drifting, sexually distracted album, which still sounds uniquely classy. Try it on your guests at your next candle lit soirée.

Nico Wayne Toussaint in Quillan

Quillan is an unremarkable town straddling the banks of the river Aude, in the foothills of the French Pyrenees.

Pronounced key-an or, in the local dialect key-ang it was home to a large Formica factory. Now bare wasteland is all that can be seen of the former industrial glory and the little town struggles to find a place on the tourist trail.

Remarkably they hold some extravagant summer festivals ranging from an annual bikers club meeting to an International Folklore Festival, and it was at the annual, three night Quillan Jazz Festival, that I had the pleasure to see Nico Wayne Toussaint, and his quartet, in action.

In previous blogs I have tried to describe the low key, relaxed, atmosphere of events in France and this event, in Quillan, typifies the very pleasant way of life in the south.

A stage had been erected in a riverside car park. Normally this car park is hardly noticeable to those passing by. A couple of hundred collapsible metal chairs had been set out and that was it. No bar, no stalls, NO CHARGE! Yes, it was completely free.

Nico is a southern born boy so it was no surprise to me that this Pyrenean town adopted him as one of their own. By 9pm the concert area was packed and when all the seats were taken people sat on whatever they could find, and when these places were taken people were happy to just stand.

The band, comprising of Michel Foizon (guitar), Sam Tchang (guitar), Antoine Perrut (bass and sax), and Vincent Daune (drums) got started just after 9.30pm with an instrumental warm-up and introduction – and then Nico was on stage and the show really got going.

Most of all Nico is a great bluesman. Nico Wayne Toussaint is a unique French blues artist. A master of the Blues Harp he is one of the rare artists to have created a completely personal vocal and performance style. His current musical universe goes way beyond his earlier influences.

Seeing his explosive concert and his sheer talent it is easy to see how he has built a solid reputation in France and around the world (he tours regularly all over USA and Canada). His on stage charisma is exceptional and his music is largely inspired by America's deep south and peppered with African, and jazzy spices.

This guy is a real showman and he’s so amazing every time he plays live. He puts life into his music with his unique personality and with his amazing energy, but he has retained the soul of the music that has been pioneered by the masters of the Blues. Always singing in the language the song was penned he shows his deep respect for the legend.

Switching to swing for “When the Bobcat Play” he was soon back to blues for “Living on the Highway”.

Sam Tchang gave Nico a break with his very impressive version of “Turpentine”. A master of guitar improvisation Sam also has a remarkable voice and showed it with his gutsy rendition.

Nico changed the mood by switching to songs, in French, that he has written for his album Blues Entre les Dents (Blues Between the Teeth). A superb album that I bought on the spot.

Of course Nico and his band had to reply to the cries for more and I was truly amazed at how anyone can sing, play harmonica, smile and laugh most of the time, and jump and dance, both on the stage and within the audience. Remarkable stamina and remarkably good blues music.

Nico Wayne Toussaint is constantly touring, from Europe to the USA, and is really respected for his impressive live performances. He’s considered by a lot of European blues magazines as one of Europe’s best blues singer and harmonica player. I can unreservedly recommend you buy any of his seven albums from Dixiefrog Records that include originals and covers but always recorded with his very personal touch and his energetic temper.

Bonjour mes amis,

Yes, I know I'm getting behind with the blogs but it is August and most of France closes down for the month - so why not me? And, we have had our usual quota of summer guests to cater for. I'm forgiven, I hope, because I've got loads to pass on to you guys.

For instance, I went to see the doctor recently. Not because I’m ailing in my old age (although it did prove to be a bit of a much needed tonic). This was not just any doctor – it was The Doctor – Dr Feelgood no less, who were at Althens les Paluds (near Avignon). And what a memorable concert it was.

Going to a Blues event in France is a real treat. Unlike anywhere else I know. Mostly it is a relaxed, un-rushed affair but superbly organised in an unobtrusive manner, and Althens les Paluds Blues Festival was no exception to this. Held on a small, out of town, piece of parkland, it had the atmosphere of a summer picnic. Two stages had been erected at opposite ends of the field (about 150 metres apart), and a makeshift bar erected under some large weeping willow trees jut about in the middle of the field.

The Alex Henley Band had made a home of one of the stages, and played between performances on the other stage. Alex kicked off on a warm (32°c) evening with Clapton’s “Old Love” which was an excellent choice to open the evening and welcome the stragglers who were still strolling in with their rugs, picnics and fold-up chairs.

Throughout the evening the Alex Henley Band played on three (or was it four?) occasions with a good mix of music – some of his own songs and some well-known covers.

Yaume Lannoy (the one with very little hair) did a great job on bass, and on drums was Micha Paquier (with a lot of hair!). Both were having loads of fun and formed a great trio with Alex.

I did particularly like his versions of “Nobody Knows You (When You’re Down And Out)”, Blaze Foley’s “If I Could Only Fly”, and surprisingly, “Back To Black” (Amy Winehouse). I have been waiting for someone to cover “Back To Black” and I was not disappointed. Alex, who has a slightly Curtis Stiger like quality in his voice, plays (guitar) and performs well, and his fellow band members were having a ball too.

First on the other stage was Mannish Boys. Not to be confused with the American band of the same name. No. This is the Mannish Boys – South of France.

Mojo Bruno is the groove man leading with vocals plus electric and steel guitars. Mickael Mazeleyrat provided real funky blues harp. Jeff Cazorla on bass, and Frank Zurano was fabulous on drums.

Playing in the styles of Chicago Blues, Mississippi Blues, R & B, or Soul they captivate their audience with their repertoire of homegrown music and songs – much from their album “Blues For You”.

If they are in your area get to see them. They are good fun, talented musicians, and very original.

After Alex Henley had done another excellent turn, Jean-Jacques Milteau and his Soul Conversion readied themselves for something I was not expecting.

JJ Milteau is a blues harp icon in France but, sadly, his fame is like so many good things from France – it has not travelled well. However, I was intrigued by this maestro of the blues harmonica and wondered what kind of show he could provide.

The first thing that struck me was the number of band members. Two black soul vocalists (Michael Robinson and Ron Smyth). Manu Galvin on guitar, Gilles Michel on bass, and on drums was Christophe Deschamps.

Another surprise – gospel! The sun was just setting when Michael Robinson lead the way with “People Get Ready (There’s A Train A-Coming)”. I would say it is pretty damn hard to silence two thousand or so French people but these boys did it. The chatter stopped, the sandwiches put to one side, and the wine left to warm in the evening sun as we all stopped to listen to their enchanting version of this classic song. The very best I have heard.

“Rock Me Baby” was a real treat but my favourite was “Long Time Gone”. Click here for a Youtube video and tell me if you can keep your feet still to this great tune and great beat. It’s on their latest album too – JJ Milteau Soul Conversion (DixieFrog Records).

And then, there was the Doctor. Could the night get any better? – Yes, it bluesing well could!

I had heard a lot about the Feelgood men from Essex and I was anxious to correct the fact that I must be one of the only Essex boys of my era who have not already seen them.

Of course they are not the original Dr Feelgood band of the 70’s. Lee Brilleaux has joined Rory Gallagher in the Blues yonder, and Wilko is doing his own thing. But does it really matter? I’ve read loads of stuff complaining that they (the current band) should not call themselves Dr Feelgood but I don’t agree. It is all part of the legend and it must be kept alive. Alive? These guys can raise the dead!!!

Robert Kane (vocals and harmonica) ploughed (Am. plowed) his way onto the stage to join Steve Walwyn (guitar), PH (Phil) Mitchell (bass) and Kevin Morris (drums) for a hell raising “Hoochie Coochie Man”. And it didn’t stop there. “Riot In Cellblock No. 9”, “Down At The Doctors”, “Milk & Alcohol”, “Route 66” and loads more.

Kane was remarkable and exhausting just to watch. Switching instantly from scary stares to mischievous grins he used every bit of the stage in a way only Jagger could do (or could have done!). Guitar solo extraordinaire came from the hands of Steve Walwyn and at this point I was just too taken with the show to make any further notes.

However, sadly, but understandably, Robert Kane announced that both the show and his voice were at an end. The lights went off, the band went off, and the techs came on to dismantle the gear.

I don’t know about cell block No. 9 but a field full of French people were close to a riot. They wanted ……………… no, they insisted, on more.

Twice the Feelgoods came back on and the final time they brought on some help. Some guy, Phil I think, who had made a guitar for Steve Walwyn, and Alex Henley, joined them for what had to be the final of finales. Kane, with the last strains of his vocal chords announced that the final song for the night was one they like to call “B*ll*cks”. Not many in the crowd understood this typical London choice word but they all knew the song that followed – “Great Balls Of Fire”. And they set the place on fire. It was extraordinary.

Suddenly it was all over big hugs by all on stage and a grand bow to the audience. Almost midnight and the lights went out.

What a brilliant concert event Althens les Paluds put on. Nothing flash. No T-shirt stalls or mass-produced ‘original’ prints of Jimi Hendricks. Just, good non-commercial, fun. I did notice five real bis' camcorders in action and the results of some expert mixing put on a large screen to the right of the main stage. I’ve found a Youtube video of Alex Henley on stage with Dr Feelgood (see here) but I would love to get my hands on the full concert video. Anyone know if it’s to be released?

Cahors Blues Festival - Day 7

Le Blues Dans La Ville

The main theme of this Friday night was for various bands, including some that had been in the Festival, to play in restaurants and bars throughout the town of Cahors.

With more than a dozen venues advertised it should have been hard to choose but I had previously noticed, during the week, a solitary poster in a shop window. It was advertising Rachelle Plas and the poster read (in English) "A Girl, Her Harmonica, and Her Voice". No contest. This was the one for me. But more of this later.

Bad To The Bone (French)

Back in the Festival Village there were two more free shows in the early evening. The 5pm one we could see - the 7pm one we could not as we had booked the restaurant for 19:30.

Bad To The Bone, I think, were having a bad day. Rather embarrassingly they had to apologise for the absence of their keyboard player. Whether this phased them or not I don't know (I'm sure it did to some extent) but they were not impressing the audience that bothered to turn up.

What they played was mostly rock and I've hard much better. Sorry lads. Maybe another time.

Rachelle Plas (French)

If you have been reading the previous blogs on the Cahors Blues Festival you will know that Rachelle Plas made an impromptu appearance with Connie Lush & Blues Shouter and this was a great preview for me.

Tonight she was playing at the Food & Beverage restaurant which is situated in a beautiful old square in the old quarter of Cahors town. It's a strange name for a French restaurant, especially as it is owned and run by a Frenchman who speaks no English. I will prefer to call it the F & B restaurant. Its a charming place with almost tropical gardens behind a high wall, and this is where we were seated on this warm evening for both our meal and the show.

Rachelle had set herself up with a small band; keyboards, guitar, and drums - and herself on harmonica and vocals.

We were not at all disappointed. Rachelle is both a talented and an accomplished blues harp player - and she has an excellent voice to suit the music too.

While we finished a superb meal she got our feet tapping to a mix of blues, soul, and just a little jazz. I particularly liked her versions of "Sir Duke" and "I Can't Stand The Rain". A table of fans, of similar age to Rachelle, got up and were dancing to the music that was drawing crowds to peer through the gate and over the wall. The meal was turning into a party!

This girl, from Paris, with her harp and voice, is going places. Look out for her. You will not be disappointed.

In fact, she will be playing at the National Harmonica League, Bristol (UK) at the end of October.

Sadly, my camera started to play up and the lighting in the restaurant garden was not placed to shine on dear Rachelle. Therefore, I have had to rely on web sourced images in this instance. But there will be another opportunity.

So that's it. That's all the bands and artists I got to see in Cahors this year (2010). There was a final night but the Tour de France was passing my house the following day and I did not want to miss it and the massive BBQ party that was to follow.

Cahors Blues Festival was a massive event and extremely well organised and very successful. Bags of credit must go to all who arranged and helped to provide such excellent entertainment.

However, I will say that I found the volume levels often unnecessarily high. I was staying more than 1 kilometre away from the Festival Village, and the two shows I did not stay to the end, I could still hear very clearly from that distance.

I am not adverse to jacking up the volume when listening to my blues or rock - at home or in the car. It is, after all, important to feel the music. But care must be taken not to distort the music, it must be respected - and so too are the rights of those that, for whatever reason, may not wish to share the same music. I do feel that being able to hear the words of a song 1 kilometre away rather excessive.

Despite my one or two negative comments my complete admiration goes to all who performed. Although some were better than others they all had to be good to be there.

And this brings me to my list of favourites. To name who I thought was best is not possible because of the diverse talents and different styles. So, I will list them in the order that they appeared:

Malted Milk - A real blues band
Cisco Herzhaft - Fantastic entertainment
The Honeymen - I bought the CD, they must be good!
Connie Lush - The belle of the Festival
Nine Below Zero - Great blues, great rock, great fun

Oh, and the Tour de France? It was won by Alberto Contador.

Cahors Blues Festival - Day Six

The problem is that by this stage of the game anyone who comes on stage has got to be more than just good, and I'm afraid the next performer, first of this night, should have been on earlier in the week.

Jean Chartron (French)

In comparison with Cisco Herzhaft (see Tuesday 12 July) Jean was a dull performer. Picking away at some Delta Blues and then feeding in some French numbers there was just no zest. He even tried “Stand By Me” but could not make people listen.

This was not helped by his need to stop the flow for a few puffs on a cigarette. Each time he stopped he lit up a fresh ciggy, took a couple of casual puffs, and stamped the rather large butt out – on the stage!

When he finished his repertoire of songs the audience hardly noticed and many just carried on talking. He then asked those that had realised he had come to an end, if they wanted him to continue for an encore. Clearly he needed to finish the whole packet of fags before leaving the stage!

He vaguely continued on and, to be fair, his audience did give him a warm clap and encouraged him into his second and final encore.

I'm probably being very unfair to the man but I will say again, he should have been on earlier in the week. The expectations at this stage were too high.

Nina Attal (French)

Very obligingly Nina was doing the 7pm slot of the free shows which was good because she obviously appeals [also] to a younger audience that would not always be able to pay for the later shows (see Nina Attal – Wednesday 14 July).

For this showing I was joined by friends Alex, Mick, and their two lovely daughters, who live near to Cahors, and this seemed an excellent time and place to meet up.

Being on a smaller stage the band had dropped the brass section and the amps were set at a more comfortably volume, which greatly improved the tone. In my opinion a much better performance and I (we) were able to appreciate her extraordinary musical abilities.

What really came across; here was a group of young musicians on the threshold of fame and glory but still thoroughly enjoying being on stage.

Friend Mick, who is a formidable musician himself, seemed to be totally absorbed in these young talents and it was good to see that his eldest daughter was too.

I really hope that Nina Attal and her band go on to even more success. It would be so good for popular music at a time when real talent in commercial music is very thin on the ground.

Nine Below Zero (British)

Stemming back to 1979 in South London, Nine Below Zero are one of the oldest and best known 'pub rock n blues' bands with a huge following in the UK and Europe.

Associations with The Blow Monkeys, Dr Feelgood, and Rory Gallagher have seen the original band move on. The band of 2010 comprises of Dennis Greaves (lead guitar and vocals), Mark Feltham (harmonica and vocals), Gerry McAvoy (bass guitar and vocals), and Brendan O'Neill (drums).

But the audience didn't care too much who they were, they just loved the music. Fast, bluesy, and good – real good. And how could it not be – these guys are the tops.

Dennis Greaves put on a stunning performance and really drew the crowd to him and, Mark Feltam – wow!! As one of the pre-eminent blues harmonica players in the world this was not just a treat but a privilege. His playing was without bounds. Resourceful, gutsy, blues at its best. He sung pretty damn good too.

All together a great performance and I cannot wait to see Nine Below Zero again – soon.

Liz McComb (USA)

I was looking forward to a change in pace. Something different. And I do like a bit of gospel from time to time.

A Steinway piano was wheeled onto the stage and lots of time was spent setting up mics and adjusting sound. This was going to be good, I thought.

Liz came on in full diva style – escorted on the arm of – I'm not sure who. He went off and Liz struck up a gentle gospel blues tune whilst the other members of her band slowly took their places on stage. An impressive start.

Liz then went on to bellow into her microphone with such power she was instantly drenched in perspiration. It was pouring off her.

I have every reason to believe that she was playing and singing superb gospel music but it was ruined by volume and subsequent distortion.

Again, as I have said earlier in the Cahors Blues Festival review, expectations probably did not help but I had in my mind that I was going to be wooed with gentle praising and a few hallelujahs. I thought there was going to be several gospel singers led by Liz McComb, all singing about happy days. I got it wrong I suppose and what I actually got I did not really like that much. I stayed for about an hour and then decided I needed some paracetamol.

Shame really.

Cahors Blues Festival - Day Five

I was excited, we'd had our night off and now I was ready for the shows that had drawn me to Cahors. Connie Lush, Nina Attal, Nine Below Zero – oh, that reminds me, it was still around 30°c - all yet to come. So sporting our “South Of France” 'T' shirts we again hiked our way up the charming Boulevard Gambetta to the festival village at the Espace Bessieres.

Almost precisely at 5pm the first band up on stage were:

The Honeymen (French)

It is very rare that I will by a CD on the back of a live session but these guys; brothers Jimmy and Elmore, lured me into parting with 12 euros for “High Rise Fever”.

Jimmy is the bald geezer with dark glasses, plays guitar and sings – the straight man. Brother Elmore provides great blues harp, vocals, and the humour. Oh, and Jimmy also bashes away at a pair of foot-pedal drums.

An all round true blues duo, great beat, great harping, that would be welcome at any gig or concert.

Jimmy sings in a gutsy American blues style that completely masks his natural accent (that always amazes me) plus a wonderful warm harp sound by Elmore, and his retro mic, became for me, a highlight of the week. Why the hell they were not one of the top billings in the main arena defeats me.

I’m playing the CD whilst I type this and I’m finding it hard to keep still – 12 euros well spent. I’ll do a CD review in a future blog.

Kevin Texas Band (French)

I really wasn’t sure of what to expect from this band and the Honeymen were going to be a hard act to follow. The programme read ‘do not miss on any pretext’ and I’m pleased to say that the advice was sound – they were good entertainment and a great way to spend the last rays of a warm sun whilst supping an ice cool beer – or two!

If I say they were not exceptional I do not in any way want to imply they were not good. A young band of competent musicians they were clearly having as much fun as their audience – and isn't that what it is all about?

The sound was rock ‘n’ blues at its best with great sounds from Kevin Gueganon lead guitar and vocals, Julien Cormier on blues harp, Bruno Breton on bass, and Yves Louet on drums.

An unlikely looking front man for a blues band Kevin toured the audience during a his guitar solo and especially spent time to captivate (and hopefully inspire) the kids. However, he called on Julien Cormier to join him on his sojourn but a harmonica without a remote mic is just lost in a crowd.

I did appreciate their music and think it is great to see young people that can both enjoy and play real music.

Nina Attal (French)

After a short break for some nourishment it was back to the festival village but this time into the paid concerts area for the big stage, and the big build-up for Nina Attal.

Nina is gaining cult status in France and I wanted to see what this was all about – I was not at all disappointed. The girl can sing, in at least French and English - perhaps other languages too, she can certainly play guitar, she is bright and charismatic, and she has surrounded herself with good band of musicians.

At just 18 years old she is a pretty, bubbly, little thing with bags of talent – but not much of a wardrobe!

But it was not Blues. Soul, Funk, Popular, it may have been. Good it certainly was, but it was not Blues.

Frankly it was all pitched a bit too high for me and her two brass players (trumpet and sax) did not help with this. Towards the middle of the second hour my eardrums were beginning to complain and although she is a fantastic artist in what she does I was quite glad when she completed her second encore and stopped.

The audience, however, loved her and without a doubt she has a remarkable music career ahead of her.

Connie Lush & Blues Shouter (British)

This wonderful, lovely woman is stark raving bonkers. Mad as hell but it is this, and being Britain's diva of the blues, that makes Connie Lush sooooo appealing.

Voted Best UK Female Vocalist (5 times!) and European Singer of the Year (2002) in the French Blues Trophies (twice) puts Connie Lush top of her class – and boy does it show.

One minute my eyes were searching amongst the, yet to be used, paraphernalia that is strategically placed around the stage and then the next moment my eyes were fixed only on Connie. Dressed in a kind of 'wife of Fagin' outfit she made her big entrance and stole the scene. The crowd went mad and Connie's strong voice rattled every window in town. Her audience loved everything she did. They lapped up “Send Me No Flowers” and “Blues Is My Business”, and I just loved her version of “Feeling Good” - and I was!

Lubricated by frequent slurps from a rather large glass of Bergerac(!) rosé wine she kept up a stunning performance for a full two hours. I'm not so sure that boasting about drinking Bergerac wine, on stage, in Cahors went down quite so well with the traditionalists but how could anyone not love her – and they did love and enjoy this amazing eccentric, talented, English woman.

The dynamics of the performer/audience relationship created a positive exchange of high voltage energy. To say that she is a hit in France is just slightly an understatement! The French love her.

And, she had another little surprise up her voluminous sleeve, Connie stopped the show and she introduced a young, home-grown, harmonica player and singer in the form of Rachelle Plas. Strangely, I had seen a single poster in the town advertising Rachelle Plas to be playing in a restaurant on Friday evening and, being as I have an interest in harmonica playing, I had booked us a table. Now we were going to get a preview!

It was pretty obvious that this situation had not been rehearsed but Rachelle managed to find the beat with the lads of Blues Shouter and came up with some pretty impressive harp playing. What was very clear was that Connie and Rachelle hit it off and were having a ball.

Cahors Blues Festival - Day 4

Listed as Le Tremplin, the final of a Blues talent completion we decided to have a restful evening, with friends, knowing that the next two evenings would be packed full with big sounds. So I’m really sorry but I have nothing else to report. The only sounds I wanted to reach my eardrums were the chinking of wine glasses!

The future of the legend !!!

Cisco Herzhaft (French)

The programme described him as one of the last of the authentic blues pickers which is undoubtedly true, even if that “one of the last” encompasses several hundreds of bluesmen and blueswomen!

However, what a lovely warm, talented entertainer this man turned out to be. Seated comfortably he picked away at his steel slide guitar, sang well, and constantly hit the beat with a stomp-box*, he took us on a tour of The Blues and all its derivatives – Delta, Chicago, Rag Time, even American Indian, and Irish influences. He even managed to fit in a blues stylised version of “Apache” (Shadows).

He had his packed audience in the palm of his hand. Hands and feet were following his beat as his left foot never stopped its mesmeric drumming.

A great show by a real bluesman. He is well up on my list and I will want to see him again.

* (I've looked up how to make one - its easy!)

We didn’t stay for the 7 o’clock show with Fred Chapellier as he was to be playing later so we took the opportunity to head into town and sample some of the excellent cuisine for which this region is famed.

Roland Tchakunté (Cameroon)

As you will know from one of my previous postings I have sampled some West African music in its raw state so I was keen to see what this guy could do. Well, he could do well and was by far, in my humble opinion, better than the other two acts that were to form a melange as the night wore on.

His tribal music with blues influences put out a gutsy performance and I would have been quite happy if he had filled the rest of the time that evening.

This especially as his companion guitarist, Mr Mick Ravassat (French I think), was absolutely brilliant and worthy of a place amongst Bonamassa,and the likes – yes, really! Mick also has his band 'Mick Ravassat & The Blue Team'.

Mathias Bernheim, percussion, was good too - making a well rounded and interesting trio band.

Roland and Mick worked exceptionally well together and I would gladly like to see either of them again – together or on their own. A good show lads.

Amar Sundy (listed as Touareg)

Whilst researching gigs, concerts, and events for my monthly list of “What’s On In France”, I have often found Mr Amar Sundy and, knowing he is of North African origin (another region I have spent some time in) I was again most interested to hear his style.

I suppose I fit a minority opinion but I found him to be a kind of middle east Popa Chubby but nowhere near as skilled. His improvisations left me confused and often I was convinced he had lost his way. I was looking for much more, something very different.

I suppose I was expecting, hoping for something like the style of Cheb Mami (Ahmed Khelifati Mohamed) but sadly Mr Sundy’s Saharan roots where nowhere to be seen. Disappointing.

Fred Chapellier (French)

In retrospect I think we should have opted to have seen Fred on his earlier performance. Without doubt he is a fine bluesman with a very fine band (Rhythm, Bass, Hammond organ and Drums) but having seen so much previous talent – and it was still only the 3rd day of the Festival – his light just did not shine for me.

And then they all got on stage together! Frankly I was not impressed. Fred is obviously a professional and experienced performer, and can hold his own but it looked to me that Roland was beginning to wish he had gone home whilst the going was good.

Amar wanted to dominate the stage in that infuriating way some people try to be magnanimous whilst really seeking attention for themselves.

I would love to see Roland Tchakounté again and my ‘man of the night’ by far was Mick Ravassat.

Second Day - Cahors Blues Festival

Sunday 11 July

To give the town a break after the correctly predicted late night finish of Popa Chubby there were only two early shows on this equally hot summer Sunday.

All the free shows were hosted on a small but ample stage, near the refreshment area, the bar, and the ‘T’ shirt vendors. Plastic chairs and plastic tables, with occasional brightly coloured parrassols gave a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and when the sun made its way down partial shade was provided by the huge plane trees that surround the square.

Rolf Lott (German)

First up on stage, and pretty well on time, was Rolf Lott who perched himself on a stall and picked his way through many favourite traditional Blues songs from the 1930’s to 1950’s. After the releases of energy of the previous day this was a more sedate way to enjoy an early evening drink and listen to some ‘roots’ music. Probably not one I will remember long term but not at all bad – on the following night Cisco Herzhaft was to outshine Rolf in a way I will remember.

Hofmann Family Blues Experience (French)

Despite their name these are a French band with daddy Hofmann looking like Roy Wood and Hofmann Jr. looking like – well nothing like anything you can see in dad. On bass and drums are two other members of ‘the family’ but I have no idea as to whether, or not, they are indeed related.

A very colourful mummy Hofmann sat on the sidelines hoping to sell CD’s and occasionally advising the sound tech to pump up the volume – as did the drummer, as did daddy Hofmann.

The first half hour or so was not good and Hofmann senior was clearly getting agitated. To be fair, something had gone wrong with the sound consul and support staff were busily bringing in fans to cool the thing down.

A switch to a duet with acoustic guitars seemed to be the turning point. Dad and son got it together, the sounds merged to music and the audience stopped talking. They were away and went on to produce some good rock ‘n’ roll.

Will they be on my list of ‘the best’ I don’t think so but damned good entertainment and it was free!

Cahors Blues Festival - Day One

So you couldn't get there eh? Well that's too bad. You missed something really good and you MUST MUST MUST make sure you are in Cahors next July. It truly is a great blues festival and I can say, from first hand experience, that I heard more good blues music in Cahors than I did in Memphis, Tennessee.

If you did get there then I hope these ramblings will help you to re-live one of the best Blues festivals in France.

Cahors is a majestic town built on a horseshoe bend of the river Lot which meanders leisurely through wide valleys and steep gorges eventually running into the Garonne.

It’s architecture is typical of the region. It’s many narrow streets and secluded squares fashioned from its rich and varied history. Within the centre ville it cannot be much more than 20 or so paces between cafes and restaurants where one can while away an hour or so with a cafe crème or a cool beer, or enjoy some of the fine cuisine and excellent wines for which the region is famed. And, if that is not enough, there are dozens and dozens of interesting little shops selling everything from boutique cloths to local produce, or even a house if you like!

Within the town the festival was extremely well advertised. Barely a shop or billboard did not display a poster listing the main events to take place during the week. However, a major omission was that none of advertising gave any clue to where the Blues Festival was to be held, and for this reason we missed the opening (free) show of Loïc Hula Boy. Bearing in mind that Hula Boy did not provide a highly amped show the only way that we found the 'Blues Village' was when we saw a display of perhaps a hundred Harley Davidson’s, and being drawn to these, we then saw the entrance to the concert area.

Very fortunately we did not miss the second act on a very hot and humid (35c) Saturday evening. For, what did not sound too inspiring in the programme turned out to be a cracking performance by young Vicktor Huganet.

Saturday 10 July

Viktor Huganet (French)

My initial reaction to Viktor, as he went about preparing for the off, was that he looked like a nice boy with early George Michael bleached streaks in his hair and a chin as smooth and fair as a baby’s bum. In no way was I prepared for an exceptional performance by an all round good rocker. Although I was pretty impressed with his Gretsh White Falcon semi-acoustic guitar. Very nice.

Supported by a Max Headroom look alike on drums and a resistance fighter on bass they did look an odd bunch .... but a very good odd bunch they were. A definite 'son of Setzer'!

The label said he sounds like Eddy Cochran and ‘just like Eddy’ he was, punching out song after song from the late 60’s / early 70’ in a style that could have matched the King himself. "Jeannie Jeannie Jeannie", "Mystery Train", "That's Alright" and stuff I have forgotten because I was having such a good time. All three are fully competent musicians who clearly enjoy what they do. As I looked around the audience it was hard to find anyone who was not foot tapping or clapping to the many songs that were so good to hear again and so good to hear done well.

Well done Viktor - a real good rocker – I’ll definitely get to see you again.

Malted Milk (French)

Malted Mi lk are a blues band I had noticed, and read about, on the Dixie Frog Records site and one that I had marked as a ‘must see’. From the hand of Robert Johnson, and then popularised by Mr Clapton, Malted Milk is a classic blues track - and these boys did the name proud.

First of the paid shows, and to start at 9pm, the setting sun did not provide any relief from the heat that radiated from the ground, the walls, the railings, even the air that seemed in short supply. Fortunately the beer, at 2 euros a plastic beaker, was ice cool. Yeh!!!

Three guitars (lead, rhythm, and bass), keyboard, drums, and a couple of brass (sax and trumpet) supplied the sound with Arnaud Fradin (also lead guitar) and Yann Cuyeu (rhythm guitar) providing most of the vocals.

The band work well together and, at the same time, interact with the audience during their powerful, first class, two hour session.

The mix of Mississippi, Chicago, and West Coast blues were all given an added ingredient – Malted Milk – and I really was very disappointed when their time was up.

Although each and every one of the band gave a brilliant performance, in my opinion, worthy of special note was the drummer Gilles Delagrange who I thought was inventive whilst still providing a deep pulsing beat with enviable concentration. The final beat of the show drained the last of his massive energy, running down his arms and into the battens, whereby he simultaneously let go of the sticks and sprang up and in the same motion made strides away much in the same way a weight lifter would do after just completing his record lift – needing to wind down such tremendous physical and mental energy.

Now marked as a ‘must see again’.

Popa Chubby (USA)

The late night show, sponsored by Harley Davidson, was the man that fills the stage with his size and presence. When he entered on stage I took a double take cos’ he looked just like my mate Tank wearing a spotted tea-cloth on his head!

Popa opened the show with an elongated version of “Hey Joe” – a brilliant track which set the scene for what was to come – and during which he became a fountain of perspiration that burst from him at the same rate as his repertoire of heavy rock music. A bikers dream!

Improvisation in music is what makes Blues so diverse and interesting, enabling the artist to put his soul into his sound, but I do find some over extended versions difficult to follow and I loose the drift of the original tune. Yes, I may be a pleb but at the same time, I was left in no doubt whatsoever that this man Popa Chubby knows how to squeeze every note known to man out of his well worn guitar.

A big show by a big man.

We are well into the concert and gig season now and there is loads going on in France. See the details below for concerts at Avoine, Cahors, Althen des Paluds, Cognac, and in October the Avignon Blues Festival.

I’m still waiting for news on when and where Shri Blues will play. They were at Gruissan (11) last year and put on a superb performance. I’ll let you know details as soon as I hear anything.

Sadly, in June, 15 years ago Rory Gallagher joined the great bluesmen of the after world. In June we also lost Pete Quaife (aged just 66) who was, for some time, bassist in the Kinks. On a lighter note, on 10 June we celebrated 100 years since the birth of Chester Arthur Burnett a.k.a Mr Howlin’ Wolf.

Occasionally I’m asked where we can buy good blues music. Of course the usual supplier sites like Amazon and iTunes will stock the better-known material – and many of the links in my blogs will take you to the relevant counter within Amazon. But there are one or two specialised sites as follows:

HOW DEEP CAN THE ROOTS GO?

During my working days I was very fortunate to have travelled to most parts of the globe and this included much of West Africa from Morocco down to Angola. And on some occasions I made my way to small shack bars in the suburbs of Abidjan (Ivory Coast) or Lagos (Nigeria), or Douala (Cameroon) where I could hear excellent local artists playing the Blues and R & B. In particular I remember one hot sticky night making my way to Vridi, on the coast near Abidjan, and finding a small bar with just a rush roof on rough poles and open to the unmade roadside. The only seating was heavy, clumsy looking wooden benches and the beers were served from a large plastic cool box. I got there literally as the 4-piece band struck up and they opened with a 20-minute lead-in to Hendrix’s ‘Hey Joe’ – followed by an extended version of the song with various solos. I don’t know if you can imagine that atmosphere but I will never forget being the only white man in town and no one cared because we all enjoyed the music.

So, I was very intrigued when someone recently gave to me the CD album “West African Music” (The Rough Guide). It open with a light calypso like track called ‘Foliba’ by the Super Rail Band from Mali.

Track 3 ‘Roucky’ by Ali Farka Toure (again from Mali) could easily sit comfortably on a Chris Rea album. Over 8 minutes long though!

Another 8 minutes fills track 9; ‘Utru Horas’ by Orchestra Baobab (Senegal). Now, in which direction across the Atlantic has this music travelled? And did it call by Mexico on the way?

The final track (12) is ‘Agne Anko’ by Kante Manfila (Guinea). A simple but pleasing acoustic guitar accompanies this ballad – perhaps praising the land he loves, his village, his people, his family?

This album presents a medley of fine tunes and rich musical textures. Influences from the musical storytellers that travelled the trade routes from darkest West Africa to the Sahara in the north – and beyond.

Undoubtedly Blues as we know it was born out of the harsh conditions of life as a black African in the Mississippi Delta but they brought their knowledge of music and an African beat with them on the slave ships. I wonder if, in those very early first years in foreign lands, did those impoverished slaves play their African music to their friends – maybe to remind them of home and those left behind. Did those more upbeat tunes gradually become the Blues of our Delta legends?

Listening to “West African Music” it is very clear that music influences have done a full circle. Modern African music is clearly styled, in part and in particular, on Blues-Rock but it is still the very deepest root of the Blues we are so fortunate to have inherited.

There are dozens of similar albums with West African music and I’m sure most will offer good listening.

I’m not sure if “West African Music” (The Rough Guide) will replace John Lee Hooker on my listening list but I did enjoy it and I would recommend it.

“I’VE GOT A BOTTLE IN MY POCKET AND A BLUES SONG ON THE RADIO"

Bonjour,

I’ve had ‘Dark Hours’ by Mean Read Spiders (see my March 2010 posting) playing in my car as I’ve been driving around in the blazing summer sun. It is one of my all time favourite CD’s and I just cannot hear enough of it. The music is superb – lively and varied – and I always find something new in the lyrics.

Many people mistakenly think The Blues is all about sad songs. How wrong they are and, despite it's title this great album is far from depressing. Rain or shine it never fails to lift the mood.

Of course much of The Blues is the musical description of bad times – that’s the legend! – BUT, it is music set in sad times to lift the spirit. Just listen to track 5 ‘Feel So Bad’ about an evil hearted woman who has just left him in misery but, and this is the great line, he's ‘Got a bottle in my pocket and a blues song on the radio’. Brilliant. Get my point?

On 24 June in New York City there will be a Blues Summit with blues legend James Cotton and friends who include pianist Pinetop Perkins and blues harp player Mr Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith. Plus, Hubert Sumlin and the great Taj Mahal. Sure to be a memorable night.

We are only 6 weeks away from one of the main blues festivals in France and, if you haven’t got your tickets yet you need to shift your butt.

The nearest international airport is Toulouse (Blagnac) just 1 hour from Cahors or there are train services directly to the town. By car Paris is just 5h30 away. So there really is no excuse, wherever you are, get down here and have a weeklong fun time in a great town.

T-Bone Walker (1910 – 1975) would have been 100 years old this month. Arguably the first bluesman to plug his guitar into an amp, and mentored by the great Blind Lemon Jefferson, his influence has rolled down the years to inspire BB King, Hendrix, Clapton, Bonamassa, and the like.

In the news Sir Paul McCartney got himself into trouble when his tour bus was attacked in Mexico City. Well Paul perhaps you should sack your security advisor for allowing your bus to be taken into a so called ‘no go’ area.

Another Sir, that of Mick Jagger, has put his lips in it by stating that he thinks the Isle of Man should legalise drugs. Off of his cloud again?

Moving on I had two opportunities this month to listen to some good live blues music in this sleepy part of the South of France. Uncl STF played, last Friday, at the Café du Pont, Esperaza (11) giving an appreciative audience three hours of continuous blues songs from Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton, and (after my recommendation) Mean Red Spiders.

Interchanging his guitars, from steel, acoustic, and electric, to suit the music style, Uncl STF gave us his version of; Driftin, Walking Blues, I Can’t Be Satisfied, Hoochie Coochie Man, Call Me Long Distance, and St. James’s Infirmary – and much more – despite the occasional technical problem with plugs and connectors.

This was followed, on Saturday evening, by an invite to a practice session with John Lansley’s “The Jam Tarts”. A relatively new band formed to play blues and blues-rock.

After a feast of BBQ duck, chicken, sausages, etc., the band set about tuning up – with greasy fingers – and then set the pace with Crossroads.

Inevitably things turned into a jam with several bluesmen turning up. A really great sax player (I’m kicking myself for not getting his details), Serge on his piano, Tony on his steel guitar, even a little black dog gave an occasional woof when he felt it appropriate. A very informal, and pleasant evening, and I hope I will be reporting on “The Jam Tarts” in future additions of South Of France Blues.

Soulville with Fabienne DELLA-MONICA. Fabienne is a Gabonese gospel soul singer who, apparently, also performs a Pink Floyd tribute ! Interesting.

Elliott Murphy. New York born, now living in Paris, Elliott certainly gets around with more than 20 concerts in Europe this year. He is not shy of the recording studio either and currently has cut 30 discs since 1973 with his latest being “Notes From The Underground”. His debut album “Aquashow” has been rated a classic album by Uncut magazine.

Friday 25 June

Bjorn Berge. Expect to be blown away by this Norwegian guitarist! He will present his tenth album "Fretwork". Alone on stage, Bjørn is universally recognized by the specialized press. Although his main influences are Robert Johnson and Elmore James, he does not hesitate to incorporate sounds from funk and Hip Hop music after the traditional blues.

He also admits his passion for artists like Beck and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This eclectic music may indeed shine in his "Live in Europe" where he took the famous' Ace of Spades "by Motorhead.

Joe Louis Walker. BMA album of the year award winner with “Between A Rock And The Blues” Joe Louis brings his San Francisco blues to France. An accomplished blues guitarist and a lively singer Mr Walker is bound to give a superb performance. 1 year ago If this don't make you stand on the tables and dance then I don't know what??????

Saturday 26 June
Taste. In the true spirit of the Rory Gallagher band this tribute is sure to bring back memories of the legendary Isle Of Weight festivals of the 70’s.

Eric Bell Trio. A long history with bands; Them, The Bluebeats, The Jaguars, Shades, The Dreams, and then Thin Lizzy (and maybe more). Eric now heads up his trio with Brian Bethell on bass and Romek Parol on drums. This music will fill the night air and reach up to the stars.

Pat McManus Band. And finally another Irish band. Famously from his band Mama’s Boys – who played at Thin Lizzy’s farewell tour – Pat McManus has teamed up with Paul Faloon on drums and Gordon Sheridan on bass – and, of course, Pat on violin, guitar and vocals.

Also, in Brittany this month we have the Trieux Tonic Blues Festival being held in the seaside village of Lèzardrieux (22) in the Côtes d’Amor no less. It’s only on for two nights but is packed with good stuff. The amazing, and award winning, Connie Lush will be there with her Blues Shouter. Other acts will be the Cotton Belly’s – loads of fun, just brilliant and a not to miss are Blackberry’n mr Boo-hoo. In May, in Brittany, what could be better? Spend your days sampling the famous Breton galettes or some of the best seafood you will ever find, and wash it all down with Breton Coreff beer or the local cider. They even have their own whisky called Kornog!

Or, if you really want to spend mega euros Mr Slowhand himself is on tour with Mr Steve Winwood and will be at the Bercy Arena, Paris. I’ve seen Clapton and Winwood on the TV and the show looks and sounds everything it should be. If anyone out there has a spare ticket, let me know first!

Blues Note

In my March (2010) post I featured Mr Pinetop Perkins who, at 97, is still playing and touring. This month I want to talk about a younger bluesman, Mr David “Honeyboy” Edwards.

Just 95 years old Honeyboy Edwards is another of a very depleted club of the last of the true Mississippi Delta bluesmen.

On 11 March 2010, at B.B. King’s Blues Club, New York City, he was recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award from The National GUITAR Museum, the first such institution dedicated entirely to the instrument. In addition he has won the 2005 and the 2007 Handy Award for Acoustic Blues Artist.

Along with Pinetop Perkins these are the last of the links with legends like Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton, Memphis Minnie and many more.

His website calendar indicates that he no longer tours outside of the USA and Canada (can you blame him?) but he still manages about 20 shows a year. Perhaps more than anyone, this man is keeping the legend alive.

CD Review

A very good friend, known to me as Tank, recently gave me Joe Bonamassa’s “The Ballad of John Henry” which was released in 2009 on the Provogue label.

I must confess that up to now I have had mixed feelings about young Joe. I saw him at the Havana Club, Toulouse a couple of years ago and he definitely put on a great show. Without a doubt his guitar playing skills were impressive but, was it blues? Was it supposed to be blues? Certainly he created something very different to the old Delta Bluesemen I have written about over the past few months. Blues-rock I think it is called and I’m comfortable with that label. For me it fits this exciting, full on, evolution of music.

"The Ballad of John Henry" is Bonamassa’s seventh studio album and follows his 2007 release, Sloe Gin. This latest album includes seven of the twelve tracks written by Bonamassa himself and really do emphasise his growing songwriting skills.

The title track is somewhat psychedelic in style with a good solid beat that will get your foot pounding the boards. Setting the mood for the the more Claptonesque blues ballad “Stop”.

I particularly like “Lonesome Road Blues”. Its everything I like about Bonamassa. Good gritty vocals and skilful fretwork. The same applies to “Happier Times” but in a more sombre mood. A very powerful track that will compliment your high tech sound system. Turn the sound up and enjoy.

Up to now it would have been hard to surpass Nina Simone with her version of “Feeling Good” but Joe has recreated this 1964 classic with his own style but without losing any of the original flavour. Brilliant.

The “Great Flood” was not that great for me although a definite contender for weeping guitars and “From The Valley” is a short experiment with the orient.

Finally, the final track “As The Crow Flies” takes us firmly back into the rock genre.

The Ballad Of John Henry confirms Joe Bonamassa’s place as the most talented, and most exciting, guitarist, singer, song-writer of his generation. In his work one can hear strains of Santana, Beck, Rea, and Clapton, and now reaches for ‘Bonamassa is god’ status.

Thanks to friend Tank I can now add this great album to my collection but, had he not been so kind and generous to me, I would have bought Ballad of John Henry anyway.

Finally, if like me you don’t know, John Henry is an American folk hero who was supposed to be the strongest man alive (in 1840) and who raced against a steam powered hammer whilst working as a slave on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. He won his race but died still holding his 20 pound hammer. Excellent blues material don’t you think?

Bluesman Mississippi Slim

Sadly, Walter Horn, Jr. - "Bluesman Mississippi Slim" – passed away on 14 April 2010 at the age of 66 years.

Walter Horn was born and grew up in Greenville, Mississippi. As an adult, he worked on a plantation as a tractor driver during the day and sang the blues in local clubs at night. By 1968, he had decided to take a shot at blues music as a career, and moved to Chicago where he became known as "Mississippi Slim." In a city full of flamboyant, charismatic performers, Slim stood out with his brightly coloured hair, loud suits, and trademark mismatched, colourful socks.

The bluesman returned to Mississippi in 1994 to spend time with his ailing mother, but continued to sing the blues, performing at Delta juke-joints and at Southern festivals. Slim also took part in the "Blues In The Schools" program, speaking to schoolchildren about blues music. Mississippi Slim recorded sporadically through the years, releasing a few singles during the 1970s, finally issuing a full-length album, You Can't Lose The Blues, in 2008. Although he wasn't the best known of blues singers, Walter "Mississippi Slim" Horn, Jr. will be missed by family, friends, and fans of his unique soul-blues sound.

In this issue we have news of Joe Louis Walker coming to Cahors. The wonderful voice of Connie Lush (see March 2010 issue) will be in France too. Nico Wayne Toussaint, harmonica fantastic, continues with his tour in France and Spain. Malted Milk are running around, and BB King will be in Cognac again.

Other news is that the UK government has announced that they want to put a stop to the illegal downloading of music. I cannot imagine how they will do that, it is all a bit too late, but I wish them luck - after all it is wrong. But then, so is fiddling one's expenses!!!!!!!!!!! What do you think about music downloads and copying? Has the music industry shot itself in the foot? Let me know your thoughts.

BLUES NOTE

Joe Louis Walker adds to the line-up of magnificent blues artist to perform at the Cahors Blues Festival in July 2010.

Starting out in his teens, in San Francisco, Joe Louis hung out with guitarist Mike Bloomfield and jammed along with visiting bluesmen in the local clubs.

At some stage he moved to gospel and sang with the gospel quartet, the Spiritual Corinthians which, at the time when blues was more clearly defined as ‘Delta’, ‘Chicago’, or ‘West Coast’ seemed to confuse his listeners. But by the mid 90’s he was becoming more consistent and set about setting himself new challenges. Great Guitars (1997), with leaders like Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, and Ike Turner is an interesting feature of his work and reveals his wide knowledge of the blues.

Multiple Grammy and WC Handy award winner, Joe Louis Walker, is now a ‘must’ to see and hear. A guitar legend and a singer/song writer he now relentlessly tours the world spreading his unique style of his blues passion. He now has 19 solo albums and countless compilations with guest appearances.

Joe Louis Walker is truly keeping the legend alive and he is coming to the South Of France this year. Don’t miss him.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

John Lansley - Musician

John’s first visit to the Aude (11) was more than 4 years ago, when he and his then musical partner made the long trip down from Luxembourg to play at a birthday party. Seduced by the south of France, he has now made his home here and has started to get actively involved in the music scene.

South Of France Blues – What is your musical background?

JL – I started at the tender age of 13 and within a few years was serving my apprenticeship in various bands playing everything from Cream to Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath to Genesis, Pink Floyd to Yes. Over the years I have graduated from what might be termed English Blues through ProgRock, experimental music, reggae, and latterly back to the blues.

South Of France Blues – Guitar favourites and influences?

JL – Early on I guess it was Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Tony McPhee (The Groundhogs), then people like Santana, John McLaughlin, Steve Howe, Bob Fripp, Allan Holdsworth, Mick Ronson. But stand out influences are Peter Green and Jeff Beck – both have superb sense of touch, dynamics and melody, originating in blues forms, but taking the original ideas forward rather than churning out the same riffs.

South Of France Blues – What are your plans now?

JL – I love playing live and have been trying to find suitable opportunities here in France. I also love playing with interesting musicians who are involved in different types of music, and seeing what happens. So creating, writing and recording are also very important to me.

It is clear there are some good musicians in the area, and lots of people interested in listening to live music, but there seems to be relatively few venues capable of providing for the demand. I’m involved with a group of people trying to address this. Watch this space!

South Of France Blues – Aha! Do tell us more...

JL – Well its early days but we’d like to set up a sort of Blues Association which would help put musicians in touch with each other, publicise and even arrange gigs, help with recording projects and so on. But we’ve got some work to do before we’re ready to launch it. Anyone interested in helping should get in touch with me (john.lansley@yahoo.co.uk)!

South Of France Blues – So you’re a professional musician? Or (dare I suggest it) retired?

JL – Ha ha. Neither. I have always wanted to have fun playing and made the decision not to rely on music to pay the rent. My ‘day job’ is in the investment planning field – I was a tax consultant advising expatriates around the world and over the last 20 years have also been specialising in helping people invest their money tax-efficiently, deal with pensions, inheritance issues, and related financial matters. I am a member of the Spectrum IFA Group (www.spectrum-ifa.com) and will gladly discuss either music or finance with anyone!

At the time of this Blog chapter South Of France Blues is working with John to find a suitable venue in the Aude (11) for blues events and for ‘open mic’ jamming sessions. Anyone who can also assist in this direction, or is interested to play, can contact John on the link above or through the comments link on this page.

RAMBLINGS
Hello everyone. March has finally arrived and not a moment too soon this year. What a winter eh? Northern Europe and the UK have been hit hard but, even down here in the South of France it has been a long, cold and damp few months.
But, what keeps me going is knowing that we have a full summer of great blues events ahead of us. Eric Bibb will be on tour in the south, Nico Wayne Toussaint is also on a grand tour playing in Bayonne, Bordeaux, Toulouse and even Quillan this summer. The Cahors Blues Festival is jammed packed with good stuff from Joe Louis Walker, Connie Lush, Malted Milk, Popa Chubby and more. I don't have a line up for the Cognac Blues Passions but it will be good - always is. And I'm waiting to hear where Shri Blues will be playing this summer. In addition to all that, there will be loads going on in the bars and town squares. All we need now is the sun!

Although I love going to the various South of France Blues Festivals there is nothing like finding that great little band playing good solid blues in a crowded French bar or in the corner of a village square. One example of this springs to mind when I saw Beth Kohnen (harmonica) and Stan Adler (guitar) blues jamming at a Sunday market in Esperaza (11). Beth plays with a wonderful Chicago blues style and Stan, being a Chicago boy, jammed along with her. Brilliant stuff that just happened without any planning or rehearsing. I just hope they do it all over again.

Another great little haunt is a small bar in Alaigne (11), Les Gallois, where, on the first Thursday of each month they hold an open mic session. John Lansley (guitar) will be getting together with friends to belt out some blues favourites and all are welcome to just listen or to join in.

In the press Roger Daltrey is planning to sing blues with Jimmy Page, and Eric Clapton, who will be touring with the brilliant Steve Winwood, says that Daltrey will be opening his US tour. All well and good, and I'm sure they will be fabulous shows but it does seem to be all about big events and big money. Perhaps I'm just jealous!

BLUES NOTE

Born in Mississippi in 1913 this guy grew up with Delta music and the great names in Delta music. He worked with Sonny Boy Williamson, Robert Nighthawk, BB King, and Earl Hooker, and is no stranger to the famous Sun Records recording studio in Memphis, MS.

He began playing blues around 1927 and is widely regarded as one of the best blues pianists. After 83 years of performing, and at the age of 97, he is still touring (albeit not outside of the States) and I’ve found 17 venues he is playing between 5 March and 14 August this year. Just amazing!

His name is Mr Pinetop Perkins (Joe Willie Perkins). A real blues legend in his own lifetime.

In the 1940’s he was one of the King Biscuit Time gang and 20 years later he replaced Otis Spann to play piano in the Muddy Waters band.

After touring with the Legendry Blues Band, a band he helped form (recording two pieces of vinyl for Rounder), he decided to retire – but not for long. In his eighties he came back as a solo artist and went on to produce fifteen recordings which include the release of After Hours on Blind Pig Records in 1988 and the album Legends featuring guitarist Hubert Sumlin in 1998.

In 2005 he was a Grammy nominee for Ladies Man on MC Records and at the same awards was presented with a Lifetime Acheivement award. Having won the Blues Music Award for best blues piano every year until 2003 this prestigious award now bears his name – the Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the year.

This friendly and gentle man is a gift to us all – enjoy.

THE COLLECTION

If you Google “Mean Red Spiders” you will probably be taken to a rather Flower Power style Canadian rock band. Go there if you want but I wouldn’t recommend it!

No, thankfully, I want to take you to the Mean Red Spiders of the 90’s, a blues band formed by Toni Vines.

About 6 years back a good friend recommended to me the Spiders second album Dark Hours and on the second playing I was totally smitten with this great CD. Turn the volume up and prepare to be blasted into a pre-smoking ban shadowy bar with it’s smells of whisky and beer, and bodies.

Opening with Love In A Bottle you will start to notice an alchohol induced theme to the following 16 tracks. For me, Love In A Bottle is too short. I just want it to go on and on. Opening with a ‘good old boy’ singing along to a steel guitar you are slowly enebriated by his southern drawl and then “Twink” Connelly creeps in to take over the song with a gutsy beautiful ending. Always in the top 10 of my most played tracks.

Live And Let Live, Just Can’t Stop and Happy On My Own have some great foot tapping blues harp playing by Mark Sharpe, and the mood is lifted with some fun Sax (Chris Pyne) in Arms Open Wide. “Twink” and Chris join in again to an upbeat Feel so Bad – a great driving track. Back to that slid guitar for the final track Call Me Long Distance a simple fun number that fades out in perfect readiness to return to Love In A Bottle on the repeat.

Toni Vines has bitter sweet memories of his time with this band. For me I’m indebted to Mean Red Spiders and Billy and Andy Gray (Gray Brothers Records) for music that will lift anyone out of their Dark Hours.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

It was whilst I was trawling through the line up at the various blues festivals in France this summer that I came across Connie Lush. She is touring several French towns in May (details to follow) and will be at the Cahors and Bordeaux (Cognac) Blues Festival in July.

Use this link to go to her website and click on the “Live in Switzerland” video clip. Close your eyes and tell me if you can’t hear the sister of Tina Turner and Gladys Knight. Open your eyes and you will see, and hear, Connie singing with a sensitivity that will make your spine tingle.

I made contact with Connie and she opened her reply with “The sun is shining here in Liverpool but it is with an icy, icy smile” and it is that sunny side attitude that shines through in her correspondence and in her performances.

I asked her about her background, her music, her inspirations, and her love of France and this is what she said:

“Soul has been an overwhelming influence for me as besides everything else I grew up with the Mowtown greats, William Bell, Judy Clay, Otis Reading, I could go on for hours! My main influence though was Ray Charles. I do tend to luv more the male singers, don’t know why! But I suppose I grew up with my parents influence and thank the Lord they just loved all the chart stuff of their time so I got to hear everything.

My family aren’t musical but there is a history of Old Music Hall going back somewhere in time. My younger sister, (I have five!) had an amazing country voice but she only sang for a couple of years and then gave up. Mum and Dad would sing together around the pubs and at parties as everyone loved hearing them sing.

Talking about singing in French, I used to sing a few lines in French in the song “Autumn Leaves” mainly when I was over in France. I luv the French language and it was made for singing! I only did school French so I do that terrible mixture of English and French when I have a go. I think the French loved it cos I would always have a go on stage and pick up some French slang and get it completely wrong so I think maybe they like me because I laugh at myself and they could sense that I love France too. Especially Vin rouge! People do know instinctively if you are genuine in what you feel and the French especially are good at sussing that out……….. I’m really obvious I’m afraid about my French Artist, I luv completely Edith Piaf .…………………..

I don’t really aspire to anyone, I just try to be me but I listen to everything because I luv music so much I find it hard to stick to one thing….I am crazy about classical and Opera too, house music……..jazz, soul, pop. I can’t get enough of it! Blues tho is my baby and I can’t seem to get away from it. Ella, Billie, Aretha just blow me up. And John Le Hooker is the King ! I ‘m rambling on. Ray Charles just makes me cry and don’t get me started on Bobby Bland “The Voice”. I recently went to see Mick Hucknall, who was touring doing only Bobby Bland songs as he too is a great fan and I nearly died listening to him sing all that stuff. (by the way not a fan of his)

I grew up in a very deprived but happy area in Liverpool and I was lucky to get in the church choir quite young…5 or 6 yrs so there I stayed until I was about 14 but also sang in the school choirs till 16 but had no idea of singing cos I thought I wasn’t any good, never mind make a living from it. Met my husband (the bass player with the band) Terry in the Cavern in Liverpool, got married etc., but he was always in a band so, quite late in life, I decided to join him. Started with funky stuff, then pop and punk and dared to start a Blues Band. It was hard work and still is as Blues is more specialised………but it soon took over. The story of me starting to sing was funny! The guys from Terry’s band would rehearse in our house and one day Terry asked me to stand in for a few songs as he was auditioning for a new band. I did and at the end of the rehearsal the guys said they liked the singer and Terry replied “She’s not the singer she’s my wife!” Needless to say I joined that day - just to prove a point. Terry eventually got used to the idea…….he had no choice cos I was hooked……I suppose its unusual for man and wife playing together in a Blues Band but we have such a life together……………….”

What more can I say??? Connie Lush and Blues Shouter will be playing in France this summer. Be there …. I will.

Wowwee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A huge thank you to all those who have viewed South of France Blues. You are part of a group of interested readers in France (many), the UK (just as many), Spain, Denmark, and the good old US of A. The response has been overwhelming and it is clear that there is a real desire to keep The Legend alive.

However, don’t forget, this is your site too. If you play I want to know, we all want to know, about your experiences, your likes and dislikes, and where you play so that we can all come and hear you.

If you like to listen, tell us what you like to listen to and why. Let us all know about that favourite track or album that we can all add to our collections. And PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do tell me about gigs coming up soon in your area – wherever you are.

One of the nicest emails I have received since creating this site was from a French blues artist who wrote “Thank you for putting the light on us french blues players. We need more recognition”. That makes it worth doing – doesn’t it?

BLUES NOTE

My next blues legend has to be Memphis Minnie and what a lady of blues she was.

Born in 1897 and named Lizzie Douglas she spent her early years growing up in Louisiana, near to New Orleans. She then moved to Walls, Mississippi, south of Memphis, and by her early twenties she was playing and singing on the local streets.

By the time she was thirty she had moved to Chicago and was playing the clubs with Joe McCoy as Kansas Joe & Memphis Minnie (original eh?). However, this only lasted until 1935 and then in 1939 she married guitarist Ernest Lawlars (Little Son Joe). They worked together to produce some potent blues, much of her songs crying out events in her life in true blues style.

Arguably the best example of this period in her life can be heard, on YouTube, with “In My Girlish Days” – and you gain the benefit of a mildly saucy video clip too! But do concentrate on the music, please.

“In my Girlish Days” and 24 other fabulously gritty songs can be found on her album “Me And My Chauffeur Blues”. A must for any serious collection.

As a singer/songwriter and instrumentalist she was the only female blues artist that matched her male contemporaries, and boy, did she do it good.

Minnie was a warm favourite well into the 50’s. Retiring and spending her remaining years back in Memphis. She died, aged 76.

THE COLLECTION

Ever since I saw Jimi Marshall Hendrix, around 1967, in London at what was said to be his last UK performance (he did do others later on), I have been a fan of his everlasting music. However, I had not thought of him as a blues man – until now.

“Blues”, by Jimi Hendrix, has proved to me that he was not influenced from the planet Zogg but that he was beautifully weaned on blues legends Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and the like.

The more I play this album, well ……. the more I play it.

I just love the acoustic version of “Hear My Train A Comin’” (Track 1) this is real country blues that he performs remarkably well. There is an ‘electric’ version of the same song which definitely has an “Are You Experienced” feel about it. Not my favourite track but the others more than make up for it.

Other great tracks are “Red House”, “Voodoo Chile Blues”, and “Bleeding Heart”, all undeniably blues and all undeniably Hendrix.

It will be a long time before I stop playing this one.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Nico Wayne Toussaint is from Toulon, just east of Marseille – one of my favourite parts of France – and he found The Blues when he was just 15. Music was in his blood. His father played jazz and Cajun country music on piano and even helped Nico form his first band, Vent du Sud.

Nico now spends his time performing, on tour, in the USA, France, Spain, Switzerland, and elsewhere, playing over 100 gigs a year.

Track him down and you will find his music pleasantly lively, full of the passion you would expect from a southern boy, and wonderfully influenced by Muddy Waters and James Cotton, in the Chicago Blues style.

All music to my ears, and I wanted to know more about this great French Blues Man.

South of France Blues: "Hi Nico. You are now living in Miami, USA. Does this mean that we will not see you performing in France"?

Nico: "No, of course not. I play a lot in France and will be on tour during 2010. I'm in BORDEAUX this month"!

South of France Blues: "Do you write your own music and where do you go for your inspiration"?

Nico: "Yes, I like to write my own music and have done so for some of the tracks on my albums. I still am influenced by the great blues players like Muddy Waters but also by Parisian French singers as Brel or Brassens".

South of France Blues: "Tell us about your albums Nico, what is your favourite"?

Nico: "I have 8 albums available, all through Dixiefrog Records. I loved 'My Kind of Blues', and 'Transgender' has a special meaning as it was written for a good friend. My 'Blues Entre Les Dents' is my latest album and I love it. It is the result of many years of hard work and has 70% of the songs in French. I hope you like it".

South of France Blues: "I certainly do like it. Thanks Nico. Keep blowing that harp (I wish I could play just half as well!!), and we look forward to seeing you on tour.

Talking the Blues
There is very little that I could add to the heaps that have been written on the origin of the Blues. Without doubt it has a remarkable part to play, not only in terms of modern music, but also in the culture we now live in.

The Blues not only formed the base for Rock & Roll, and then R & B, but has strong links with Jazz and, of course, Gospel music. Early Blues was also the voice of Civil Rights movements throughout the southern states of America, and reflected the conditions of everyday life, the feelings and humour that helped people endure those conditions, and the long struggle for equality and freedom.

It is fabulously amazing that, from it's roots in Africa, the Blues is now performed and appreciated in practically every country and within almost every culture on this planet.

The Blues is truely the heart and soul of modern music and it is quite impossible to think of how music would have developed without it. In my small way I wish to help keep that great legend alive.

Better still Max D. Spiegel, Publisher, The Mudcat Café wrote:

"The Blues is very simply the purest form of Art that I have yet witnessed on this earth. Its meaning and history are something that are very nearly evidence of divine intervention. For such beauty from such pain, is magic, is glory to the human spirit. How strong it is, how it can find joy in misery, how it always has hope. Glory to the powers of creation and the reasons for it. Glory to the men and women that gave it to us. Men and women that you will see on this page. Men and women that should never be forgotten, for their example is a needed one. This project is in service to the preservation of American History, the History of Music, and the strength of humankind."

Blues Note
It is impossible to to talk about the Blues without talking about Mr Robert Leroy Johnson (8 May 1911 - 16 August 1938).

Robert Johnson was a gifted singer, guitarist and songwriter whose style has influenced a broad range of musicians, including Muddy Waters, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck and, of course, Eric Clapton who has called Robert Johnson "the most important blues singer that ever lived" and has dedicated an album to him; Me and Mr Johnson released in 2004.

Mr Johnson is known to have recorded only 29 songs before his death, at the age of just 27, in 1938 and, there exists only two photographs of him. His short but productive life is shrouded in mystery. He was known to be spontainious and, even, reckless jumping on freight trains just to see where they would take him. For him the Blues spoke of good-time women and big-shot gamblers, and he was to die, murdered, by a jealous husband or maybe a jealous girlfriend, while performing at a juke joint near Greenwood, Mississippi.

Listen to the lyrics of "Hell Hound On My Trail " - is he singing about his own lifestyle? Then listen to the marvelous "Sweet Home Chicago" which further expresses the feelings of this brilliant but insecure father of the Blues. A true legend whose music continues to influence and entertain us more than 70 years after his nimble fingers plucked their last chord.

Artist of the Month

This section will normally be dedicated to artists playing in, or having a connection with, the South of France. However, it is winter in these parts and not a lot is going on, but I will endeavour to introduce you to some great musicians in the coming months.

So, I would like to feature a young lad I have seen busking in the city of Cambridge, England. His name is Jack Luskin (Jack, if I've got your name wrong please let me know), and he sits on a corner of the market square in the city centre. Twice I have listened to him play his guitar, hooked up to a battery amp, and both times it was freezing, but his music was clear, bluesy, and beautiful. A real talented artist who I guess is only about fourteen (sorry if I got that wrong too). Hopefully I will see him play somewhere warmer in the future so I can listen a bit longer. If you are ever in Cambridge, with a big warm coat, check him out. He is good.

South of France Blues

Hi, this is my first issue of South Of France Blues which will be a monthly online magazine dedicated to those interested in The Blues.

I am not an expert on any kind of music nor do I play music (apart from a few riffs on a Hohner harmonica) but I do love the blues.

Recently I made a visit to the USA, to visit friends, and to find some good blues music. With a couple of exceptions I was disappointed (not with the friends, but with the music!). Some years back I had visited Philadelphia many times on business and often enjoyed a good blues evening in Warm Daddies. Sadly, they have moved to a soulless building away from downtown and, in my opinion, have lost the warm appeal they had in the past. Soul music was being played on the evening I went and both the lady singer and the band would have sounded just as good at half the volume.

In Chicago I was advised to visit Kingston Mines blues club. A much better atmosphere than Warm Daddies and good ribs too. This venue boasts two stages in two rooms. A strange system whereby you can listen to the band in one room until their break and then move to the adjoining room for the start of the second band. The first band was good the second a noise.

Nashville lived up to its reputation as the home of country music. Almost all the bars and clubs had live country bands playing and most were good. The Music Hall Of Fame is amazing and traces the roots of country and blues music and displays memorabilia from Hank Williams (all three of them), Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Elvis, and many more.

Memphis on the other hand was another disappointment. As a blues fanatic I had set my heart on finding real blues in Memphis but, oh dear, walk as often as I may down Beale Street, my ears were accosted with disco music and very poor karaoke. Such a shame.

I did find a blues band called "2 Weeks Notis" tucked down beside a bar and they were doing their best to provide some good music regardless of noise from the disco bar opposite. During their break I chatted to Bill, their lead singer and bass player, and he confirmed that the blues had almost been pushed out of Memphis.

Whilst in Memphis I went twice to BB Kings club, on Beale Street (good ribs too!). The resident band played on my first night and they were OK but not impressive. Don't get me wrong, I like virtually all kinds of music but it needs to be good and this band resorted to 30 minutes of poorly sung Michael Jackson covers - at BB Kings club, on Beale Street, Memphis? No ....................!!

My next night at BB Kings was more for the ribs than the music but boy was I in for a surprise. Playing the early slot was the Will Tucker Band. They comprise Russ Wheeler on keyboards, Randy Middleton on Bass, and Pete Mendillo on drums. Plus, of course Mr Will Tucker, who provides an amazing concert with his guitar and singing ranging from numbers by Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, etc. Whilst listening and watching this young maestro my wife and I tried to guess his age. With his incredible skills and total confidence on stage we guessed him to be around nineteen at least. Were we to be shocked when Pete Mendillo announced that the band leader is only 15 years of age and has been playing the guitar for only three years. Look him up on the above link (however, if you go to his Youtube site I don't think this does him justice).

My final destination on this quest for good music was New Orleans. Another place I have enjoyed in pre-huriccane Katrina days. The French Quarter was not seriously damaged by the floods but I'm afraid it has washed away the music - unless you like disco, karaoke, strip tease clubs, and bad food. Very sad.

So, what's all this to do with the blues in the south of France? Well, my trip also took me to Long Beach, California (just south of Los Angeles) which is a really nice place and home to the "HMS Queen Mary", now used as an hotel. Just as I was leaving my hotel and heading to San Diego I noticed a magazine called Southland Blues, in the lobby, and what a great find it was.

And, this is what has given me the idea to create a blog, in the south of France, for all those that want to keep the blues alive - wherever you are.
