SM City Davao and SM Lanang joined the nation in observing National Flag Day with a simultaneous flag-raising ceremony on May 28.

The synchronized event aimed to inspire patriotism and civic unity among mall employees, affiliates, and tenants. Joining the ceremony were the Eastern Mindanao Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (EASTMINCOM-AFP), alongside the Philippine Air Force (PAF), Philippine Navy (PN), and Task Force Davao (TF DAVAO).

National Flag Day commemorates the historic Battle of Alapan on May 28, 1898, where the Philippine flag was first unfurled. This significant occasion also marks the official start of the annual “Flag Days” period, kicking off a two-week celebration that leads up to Independence Day on June 12.

Turn off and unplug. Standby power or phantom load refers to the power used by electrical items when switched off but still plugged in. Though minimal, the unused consumption from television units, computers, gaming consoles, printers, and the like draws power and adds to the monthly bill.

Davao Light and Power Co., Inc. (Davao Light) residential customers will see a drop in their electricity bills for the May 2026 billing, mainly due to a lower transmission charge.

The overall residential electricity rate decreased by P0.18 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), bringing the new rate to P10.35/kWh from last month’s P10.53/kWh. This translates to savings of P35.94 for typical households consuming 200 kWh. The rate applies to bills received from May 12 to June 10.

The adjustment is primarily due to lower transmission rates from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). Additionally, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has directed the temporary suspension of the P0.0371/kWh Green Energy Auction Allowance (GEA-All) collection for the May and June 2026 billing periods.

This is the second consecutive month in which the overall residential rate decreased, providing continued financial relief for households this warm and dry season.

Since market prices remain volatile, Davao Light reminds customers that rates change monthly and encourages continued energy-efficiency practices to manage electricity costs. “The rate reduction comes at the perfect time,” said Fermin Edillon, Davao Light Reputation Enhancement Department Head. “With the warm and dry season, electricity demand will be high as heat drives up the use of air-cooling appliances. Moreover, with school out, students are spending most of their time at home. While power consumption may go up, we encourage everyone to practice energy efficiency so families will not worry about high bills.”

Here are some practical tips to smartly manage power use in households:

1. Be on the lookout for unused consumption. Known as standby power or phantom load, this refers to the power used by electrical items when switched off but still plugged in. Though minimal, the unused consumption from television units, computers, gaming consoles, printers, and the like draws power and adds to the monthly bill.

2. Let natural air and light enter the home. During the cooler hours of the day, open curtains and windows to let sunlight brighten the space and allow air to flow in. This enables families to cut back on electricity use from air-cooling appliances and lighting fixtures.

3. Inspect your home wiring for damage. Make it a habit to check for deteriorated or exposed wire insulation. Faulty or damaged wiring can cause electricity “leaks,” leading to wasted energy and higher bills. More importantly, damaged wires are serious fire hazards that can compromise your family’s safety.

Davao City — More investments must be poured here said tycoon Hans T. Sy in an interview over the weekend..

Mr, Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings is optimistic of investing more in the area, referring to Davao and Mindanao, seeing how the place has transformed.

“Frankly speaking, the last time I was here was 10 years ago  and now a lot of  things  has changed,” he said. 

Sy said I like what I see and I am more encouraged actually that we should  really pour in more investments here not only for the National University (NU) but also for the SM Group and not only in Davao but the whole of Mindanao.

To date, there are already 7 SM malls in Mindanao, namely, SM City Davao, SM Lanang, SM City Cagayan de Oro, SM CDO Downtown Premier, SM City General Santos, SM City Butuan, and SM City Mindpro.

Sy confirmed of their site  in Toril here but he did not disclosed as to when it will be established although he said the construction of the Tagum mall is ongoing.  

“Tuloy tuloy yan even more so that I see all these progress then I am very encouraged,” he said.      

Meanwhile, Sy, who is also the Chairman of the Board of National University Philippines said the entry of NU in Davao is not to compete with other schools but we are here not to eat up the pie but make the pie bigger. 

He said we want to reach out to more deserving Filipinos with good quality education yet affordable.

NU Davao is housed at the seven-story expansion building of SM City Davao occupying the 5th 6th and 7th floors.  The first and second floors are commercial and it’s a design that we have done to somewhat subsidize NU. That’s the one taking the hit of the capital expenditures.  Most of the cost is absorbed by the company, he said.  The 3rd and 4th floors are parking spaces.                                          

With NU Davao located here Sy also said it will benefit the mall. First is the daily traffic and second it gives not only us the opportunity to really reach out to the students but all the businesses around and thirdly to the students for them to be able to understand the business regimen directly.

NU Davao executive director Edwin J. Loma said students enrolled in the university for a degree program will undergo internship for 6 units per term where they will be working part time outside the campus and it is us here in NU who will  look for their employers.

Loma said although it is not required the partner employers will pay them minimum wage but it is optional on the part of the employers. However, some employers do provide and even more than the minimum wage.

After six months they come back for graduation and most of them are hired by their employers, he said.

Loma said the students must comply the internship as a requirement before they graduate.

He also said that they have international partners for internship but they prefer that their employers are here.

Right now he said they already identified their partners even as he said that all members of the SM Group are potential employers but we are not limiting them to just SM.

Internship is a national program for NU he said and it is very effective as students are already considered experienced when they graduate. 

With this internship the students already have the six months experience and some employers would no longer subject them to probationary period and automtically hire them as regular employee.

Loma said they monitor their graduates and they have very high employment rate because of the internship program.
