Kicking off the Summer and the festival season the Southside Fringe is back.

I know we say this every year but this really is our favourite time to live in the Southside, there are so many community events, pop ups, music, art and other fun stuff happening its an absolute joy to have the area so buzzing.

Other the last couple of years we've both been so busy with work we've not managed to get to too many events but we hope to change that this year.

So in the next wee while we'll try to write up about the upcoming Bungo in the back Lanes, Streetlands, Blossum, Ready Steady Grow, Southside Film Club, theatre at the Shed and The Citizens to name just a few but first lets enjoy what is kicking it all off, the Southside Fringe.

This looks like fun, an art festival taking place in odd locations and peoples homes. Its a mini art festival crossed with doors open day.

"Glasgow Open House is an artist-led, not-for-profit organisation that was founded by Glasgow School of Art alumna Amalie Silvani-Jones in 2013. It was formed in order to meet the practical needs of the city’s grassroots art community and takes its lead from Glasgow’s already prevalent ‘Do-It-Yourself’ culture in relation to visual art and music."

A lot of people sending us news of Southside #Indyref events at the moment. Seems to be a very popular topic.

Tomorrow night's event should be a more relaxed event as its twinned with a jazz cafe.

The music will start from 7:15 with refreshments and then the debate.

The local MP Jim Murphy was due to be taking part in this event but we've been informed that he has now pulled out due to another booking.

"This will be a jazz cafe style event with live music and refreshments where the candidates will have the chance to speak about their vision and values rather than simply re-state the economic and political arguments we are all familiar with."

A rather brilliant sounding event is taking place in the Southside next month.

Organised by Gerry Hassan and Roanne Dods (supported by University of the West of Scotland and PAL Labs), the Imagination Festival: 'Scotland's Festival of Ideas' is on the weekend of Friday Sept 5th-Sunday Sept 7th.

Taking place at the Govanhill Baths, the Glad Cafe and other Southside venues there will be over 20 events with 60 speakers, films, eight bands, musical acts and a DJ set;

"Our programme and speakers will cover areas of ideas, culture, history and politics – all in a way which is non-partisan and non-aligned. We are aiming for a programme that is intelligent but relaxed and personable – marrying the best sense of an intimate book festival with an engaged light touch connection to people and place."

The Southside of Glasgow has for a long time been at the forefront of community engagement projects and new ways of thinking with things like Locavre, Bungo in the Lanes, GladCafe, Southside Fringe, the Laurieston Arts project, Caledonia Church, Govanhill Baths and the Kinning Park Project etc, people of the Southside are just getting out and making things happen. This festival seems to be a celebration of that type of approach and thinking.

Creative Thursday - Kate Tough

Today's Creative Thursday interview is with poet Kate Tough who also co-runs the regular poetry nights at The Ivory.

Where in the Southside are you based?

I live on the far edge of Clarkston, by the fields and woods of High Flenders Road. It’s beautiful, but I’m ready to be closer to Shawlands. If anyone has a quiet, leafy flat to rent out, or a nice Newlands ‘annexe’, let me know.

What do you do?

I write, publish, perform and collaborate with others in the genres of fiction and poetry. Also, I host space for writers to share work and inspire each other, and I tutor new writers.

In fiction, the main focus was a first novel, written 2007-10, revised 2011-12, and published by Cargo in May 2014. It’s character-driven, with a distinctive narrative voice that incorporates my poetic bent. Others tell me it’s laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreaking, too; if that’s true, I’m pleased.

In poetry I publish a range of work; from short, quiet nature meditations, to gobby analyses of love, to experimental pieces made with black-markered documents and found bits of paper.

In Shawlands, I co-run Poetry@TheIvory, the regular showcase night where Scottish headline poets and new, local poets share the same stage. We have a reputation for relaxed, egalitarian, stunning loveliness. Come along.

Summary of your background?

After uni and travel, I worked at Greencity Wholefoods, then the Scottish Parliament. I left to do the Glasgow Masters in Creative Writing. Since graduating in 2008, I’ve worked in the arts and education: lecturing in creative writing, running a drama drop-in, teaching animation in afterschool clubs and, recently, undertaking a PGDE.

Tell us about your favourite piece of your work?

Well, the fun of the moment is coming from the novel, Head for the Edge, Keep Walking. It was a long, solitary journey to write and redraft it, but it had supporters along the way (such as Creative Scotland) which helped my diligence. After years of not knowing why I kept going, it ended up with three publication offers. Choosing Cargo was the best decision – what a wonderful team. Collaborating with other specialists (on editing, cover design, promotion) and benefitting from their expertise is a privilege. It’s been a strange, humbling experience to have readers now, too – people who’ve spent £9 on the 80k words I determinedly crafted. Their support and appreciative feedback has meant more than I realised it could. They’re superstars.

What is your favourite creative blog/ website or other source of inspiration?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (and again) Sunny Govan radio station is the 8th wonder of the world. It’s a beacon of authenticity in a sound-sea of constrained, contrived, banal sh*te.

What key piece of advice do you wish you'd known?

There’s seldom a single right answer. There isn’t one, right way to do things. The way you want to do it is just fine – so get on with it.

Tell us your favourite place/ space in the Southside?

If a non-tangible phenomenon can be a ‘space’… then my favourite space is the Southside’s commitment to community. That ‘common weel’ spirit is evidenced everywhere, from the Glad Cafe, to the Govanhill Baths project, to Locavore, Urban Roots, Merry-Go-Round and more.

Name another Southside creative whose work you admire?

I’ve become a huge fan of local poet Alexander (Sandy) Hutchison – a mighty talent who’s also a top-notch kind of bloke. www.alexanderhutchison.com

If money was no option what would you change about the Southside?

I’d bring the subway system out as far as Cathcart, so the Southside and West End were connected in one big love-loop, and I’d have it running till 3am.

Tell us one other interesting fact about you?

The debut novel was fiction when I wrote it (2007-2010) but elements within it have come true since it was written. Weird.

Creative Thursday - Lisa Ballantyne

After a little break we return to our Creative Thursday interviews. This week is shawlands noveliest Lisa Ballantyne.

Describe your creative practice or what it is you do?
I am a novelist. My debut novel, The Guilty One was published in 2012 and my second novel will come out in 2015. I am currently working on my third novel. I am a full time writer at the moment, and tend to write in the afternoon and early evening. It is something I have always wanted to do since I was very young, so despite giving up a demanding, exciting job to devote myself to writing, I am still loving it.

I am from a small town in West Lothian, and have lived in Glasgow for nearly ten years, coming here initially to work in the International Office of University of Glasgow. I am very well travelled, having lived and worked in China for 6 years, and travelled to many different countries in my previous career. I still really enjoy travelling and meeting people from different cultures to my own. I think it's hard to write well unless you've lived a fair bit.

Tell us about your favourite piece of your work?
My favourite piece of work is still forming in my mind!

What's next?
I was delighted to be awarded one of the prestigious Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowships to spend a residency in the fabulous Grez-sur-Loing, France (just an hour south of Paris). I will head to France in July this year and hope to finish the novel that I am working on at present. I have so many: Lovestruck Cafe, Queen's Park for running and Pollok Park when I'm stressed, Glad Cafe for evening, Young's Interesting Books for wasting time, Biscuit for their French Toast.

Name another Southside creative whose work you admire?
I am a great admirer of William McIllvaney. Although he has moved away, he used to be a Shawlands resident.

If money was no option what would you change about the Southside?
Shawlands Arcade - get rid of it!

Tell us one other interesting fact about you?
I speak Mandarin. I am very tall.

Art on the Hill

Art on the Hill is a group showcase of Glasgow’s fine artistic talent. Running for the month of May upstairs in the amazing empty upper floor of the Church On The Hill, the exhibit will cover a diverse range of practices from painting, sculpture, photography and audio visual works.

"Art On The Hill will be taking place in the ‘Church On The Hill’ Battlefield Queens Park, as part of the Southside Fringe Festival in May 2014. We aim to be something of a new Glasgow Art Fair showcasing the work of around 100 artists. Bringing together select fresh faces just starting out, recent graduates from the Glasgow School Of Art, seasoned professionals and even some artists from Edinburgh!

The aim of this exhibition is to act as an artist run platform, where by the artists can show in a professional large group show without the prohibiting costs of mainstream art fairs and also allow the public access to the diverse breadth of artistic talent that is rampant in Glasgow.

Some of our artists are well established, some just starting out. But we welcome them all equally and hope you enjoy the art on show. Come an introduce yourself to some work by the artists who choose to call Glasgow home."

Artists featured include; Libby Walker, Hole in my Pocket, Martin Grubb and Michelle Cohen.

After three successful years of running a film festival in May Southside Film Festival the team behind the festival have decided to do something a little different for this May.

Southside Film Festival presents Cinemap, a screening event over the weekend of 23-25 May, 2014 in various Southside locations.

Cinemap is inspired by last year's ALBERT DRIVE project that asked the people of Pollokshields to meet their neighbours through a series of artistic commissions exploring the central question 'who is my neighbour'?

Cinemap will screen a number of ALBERT DRIVE films including work by Basharet Khan and Abigail Howkins which explore the theme of neighbour but also highlight the importance of local, of community and of bringing people together.

Cinemap is looking for more films that explore the wider Southside community and the themes of COMMUNITY and LOCAL. We are looking for films that have imaginative approaches to these themes.
We are also looking for new work made in Southside Glasgow and/or made by Southside filmmakers that has not screened at previous Southside Film Festivals.
We are also inviting filmmakers to submit site specific work that responds to and relate to the Cinemap screening spaces- Shawlands Arcade, The Glad Cafe, Govanhill Baths, New Victoria Gardens and East Pollokshields Quadand The Tramway.

Citizens Theatre and Gilly Roche present a brand new late night arts club called BOOMBOX!

"BOOMBOX is a series of late night surprise multi-arts events at the Citizens Theatre, produced and curated by Gilly Roche, producer of the hugely successful IF events at the Southside Studios in Summer 2013.

The Circle Studio will be transformed into an intimate, informal black box of tricks presented by some of Glasgow’s most dynamic artists. We’ll invite them for to let loose, celebrate, experiment and entertain.

It might be a gig by a big name musician, a work-in-progress performance, a movie night or a DJ led dance party. The bar will be open and we’ll keep things nice and informal. One thing is guaranteed - these events go BOOM!

10pm - midnight and this is the first of three, monthly BOOMBOX events in the Circle Studio. £7 a ticket and the bar will be open all night. AND it's a surprise line-up to that people can come and see their new favourite artists."

The IF events at the Southside Studios were great so the new nights at the Citz is sounding really interesting.

The Turner nominated artist Phil Collins is looking for your help. Glasgow born but now living in Berlin, he is creating a project that celebrates the lives and stories of the people of his home town.

Specifically the section for the film that he is currently working on requires photos that explore our relationships, be these from weddings, long friendships or secret affairs. They don't need to be dramatic moments from your life, he interested in the private moments that would not normally make the papers. He's interested in the previously unhighlighted quiet ticking of everyday life that forms the heart and true tale of the City.

Submitted stories/ images will be used as part of a special visual arts project for the 2014 Cultural Programme and take place in Queens Park on 19 July as part of the Festival.

People can take their photographs to Photo Express on Pollokshaws Road (at corner of Alison St) for free scanning - or go to one of the libraries listed at selected times.

Come along to Pollokshaws Burgh Hall on Saturday 22nd February and join Glasgow Film Festival for an immersive 1920s cinema experience. Speedy will feature a live accompaniment on Pollokshaws Burgh Hall’s majestic Wurlitzer pipe organ (installed in 2008 by the Scottish Cinema Organ Trust), adding a touch of period charm and authenticity to the screening.

Harold Lloyd's final silent film is also one of his finest. The Oscar-nominated Speedy, directed by Ted Wilde, is a warm-hearted comic caper with the King of Daredevil Comedy in his element as the baseball loving soda-jerk who fights greedy, ruthless businessmen to save the last horse-drawn tram in New York. Racing against the clock, Lloyd triumphs against impossible odds, enjoys some achingly romantic moments with his girl and even manages to get the legendary Babe Ruth to his baseball game on time. A joyous, nostalgic delight filmed on the streets of New York and amidst the fairground attractions of Coney Island. Fun for all the family!

The film was one of only two that was nominated for the short-lived Academy Award for Best Director of a Comedy Picture at the very first ceremony in 1928, losing out to Lewis Milestone’s Two Arabian Knights. By the time of the next ceremony in 1929, the award had been merged with that for dramatic direction to become the award for Best Director.
