South Sun Products originally began as a manufacturing & importing company, hence the name "products." When the retail/wholesale store opened, it was named Alotta Jewelry to keep it separate from its manufacturing image. Because of the tricky spelling and confusing nature of the name "Alotta" and the fact that the store sold mostly beads, the name eventually reverted to South Sun Products, in an effort to more successfully brand and market the store. From taking classes to subscribing to beading magazines, the beading world offers several ways to jump-start or expand the learning of a jewelry designer.

Of course the internet is a great way to learn, but with so much out there, the task of narrowing down your search to relevant resources can be quite a tedious task. I'm often asked for good online resources.

Wikihow.com, the online "how-to" manual spin-off of Wikipedia.org, surprisingly offers a wide variety of jewelry making tips, all set out in an easy to follow format. The great thing about Wikihow is that you can add your own entries or edit the ones you're looking at to make sure they're accurate. Here are a few great pages from Wikihow on making jewelry.

Amethyst is the purple variation of quartz.

Some places where Amethyst can be found are Brazil, Canada (Nova Scotia, Ontario), India, Mexico, Siberia, South Africa, South Korea, United States (Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Maine, Montana, Oregon, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas), Uruguay, Vera Cruz.

Origin of the Stone's Name:
Amethyst comes from the Greek work Amethustos, a meaning "not" and methustos meaning "drunken." The stone was originally thought to prevent people from getting drunk or intoxicated. It is also said to derive from the Middle English ametist or the Latin amethystus.

Ametrine: a naturally occurring mixture of Citrine and Amethyst (This stone is also known as trystine or bolivianite)

Burnt Amethyst: The yellowish stone created by heating Amethyst naturally or artificially. This stone is often confused with Citrine.

Rose de France: A paler hue of amethyst sometimes referred to by this name.

Green Amethyst: a trade name for prasiolite. Other names for this stone are green quartz, lime citrine, and vermarine.

Industry practices, Enhancements, & Synthetics:
Amethyst is one of the more popular and more well-known gemstones. It has therefor been imitated, synthetically produced, and enhanced in many occasions, but is not such a rare stone that it is difficult to find real amethyst. Most amethyst jewelry and beads are composed of the real, unaltered stone.

Care Recommendations:
Natural amethyst can fade and lose it's color from too much sunlight. Keep it out of the sun as much as possible.

Metaphysical Properties:
Associated Month: Amethyst is the Birthstone of February

Associated Astrological Signs: Aquarius, Aries, Pisces, Sagittarius

Healing Properties: it is believed that Amethyst helps prevent intoxication, calms the mind, helps with meditation, helps to interpret dreams, wards off nightmares, soothes physical and emotional pain, increases psychic awareness and reduces stress. It is supposedly the best stone for the 6th chakra.

Fun Facts:
Because Amethyst is believed to help prevent drunkenness, Romans used to make entire goblets from it.

In Greek Mythology, the God of wine and mischief, Dionysus, pursued the mortal Amethystos, who refused his affections. Amethystos prayed to the Gods to protect her from Dionysus. The Goddess of the hunt, Artemis, answered her prayer and helped Amethystos by transforming her into a beautiful white stone. Dionysus was so humbled by her actions that as an offering, he poured wine over the stone, turning it into the purple amethyst.

These finds of handmade beads, in a limestone cave in Morocco, suggest that humans were fashioning purely symbolic objects in Africa 40,000 years before they did it in Europe. Twelve Nassarius shells were perforated in their centres, and showed signs of being suspended or hung. They also appeared to have been covered in red ochre.

South Sun Beaders at the Street Fair

So the Beady Eyed Blogger (thats me) and some friends went to party it up at Adams Avenue this past weekend and accidentally stumbled across one of the biggest annual street fairs in San Diego.

Loving nothing more than a good street fair full of hand crafted goods and mayhem (especially mayhem), we strolled around to see which jewelry designers might be present.

Fortunate we were! This was a particularly South Sunny street fair with more than a couple of South Sun's customers displaying their work.

The beautiful Marilyn Van Dusen of Jewelry by Marilyn was very excited to show off her work:

The rest of our customers were a little shy and didn't want their photographs taken, but we did find some real estate guy with a really neat rock:

What a Shipment of Beads Looks Like

Just to give people of the outside world some kind of perspective of the quantities we get in here and what we really have to deal with, here are some pictures of our latest shipment. The shipment came with about a jillion kilos of glass and porcelain, plus three small decorative end tables. I don't know how to explain the furnature, because I'm not so sure how we can use them as beads..
