Woody is Back!

Sea-Doo Closed Loop Cooling

The Closed Loop Cooling System on the Sea-Doo PWC's are just another reason why they are so much better than the competition. The coolant for the engine in the Sea-Doo's is not taken from the water but is internally looped to cool the engine therefore keeping any debris or corrosive saltwater from hurting the engine. This keeps maintenance costs low for you and will keep your Sea-Doo on the water for a long time.

Boating Under the Influence

Do not do it, it is stupid and will lead to civil and criminal punishments

Make sure you listen to everything that officers say on the water

This includes the local police, the sherrif, your state's fish and game officers as well as the Coast Guard

Reporting Boating Accidents

If you are in an accident in your boat, then make sure that you report it to the police if it results in loss of life, a person dissappearing off the vessel, personal injuray that requires medical attention, property damage more than $2,000 or complete loss of the boat
Immediate Action is required for fatal accidents
Otherwise, if there is personal injury or a dissappearance of a person, then report the accident within 24 hours
If there is property damage, then report the accident within 10 days

Rendering Assistance

If the driver of a boat sees somone at sea in danger, then they must provide any assistance that they can safely provide

Guide to Safe Boating: Part 4

Navigation: Rules of the Water

Crossing Situation: When two boats are coming towards each other from a 90 degree angle.

The stand-on vessel should maintain its course and speed
The Give-way vessel should alter its course to pass behind the stand-on vessel.
Both boats should give 1 short blast of the horn.

Overtaking Situation: When a boat is going faster than and passes the one in front of it.

If the overtaker is passing on the left he should give two short blasts of the horn and if passing on the right, should give one short blast of the horn.

When two boats meet head on, passing on the port, or left is preffered.

Once the two drivers realize that there are coming towards each other, one short blast should be given, which will let the drivers know to pass each other on each others left, similar to driving on the road.
If the drivers give two short blasts, they should pass on the right, similar to how people drive in Britian.

Lateral Navigational Aids

When moving upstream, keep the green, or odd number markers on your left, and the red, or even mumber markers on your right.
When moving downstream, do the opposite, with the green on your right and the red on your left.

Information and Regulatory Markers

Orange Diamond: Alerts Boaters to hazards

the hazard will most likely be written inside the diamond

Orange Circle

Restricted Operation, such as no wake zone or a speed limit

Orange Diamond with a cross in the middle means that boats are prohibited in the area
Orange Square provides helpful information

Today we continue the Guide to Safe Boating!

Sound Signals

All vessels are required to have sound producing devices (either a horn or a whistle) and they must use these during times of low visibility or during emergencies

Navigational Lights

Vessels must use navigational lights between sunset and sunrise and during periods of low visibility
Your boat must display the red and green lights at the front and the white light at the back of the boat

Pollution Regulations

Do not throw your trash out in the water, throw it in a trash can
Report any spills of oil or gas

Marine Sanitation Devices

If your boat has a bathroom, then the manufacturer had to make sure the sewage is kept in a safe place until you can dump it

Visual Distress Signals

You do not need a VDS if you are on a river, lake or a bay with an opening of less than 2 miles. You are required to have a VDS if you are on open water.
Pyrotechnic visual distress signals must be US Coast Guard approved, accessible and ready to use
You need at least 3 visual distress signals

Fire Extinguishers

US Coast Guard approved marine fire extinguishers must be on all boats.

must have either B-1 or B-II classification
Any boat less than 26 feet must have 1 fire extinguisher with at least B-I classification
Any boat from 26-40 feet must have either 2 B-I fire extinguishers or 1 B-II fire extinguisher and 1 B-I fixed system fire extinguisher

Ventilation

All gas powered boats must have a ventilation system
This system is called the blower on most boats
IMPORTANT: Make sure you always run your blower and smell for any fumes before you start you boat!

Guide to Safe Boating: Part 1

The National Safe Boating Council has a guide to safe boating out, however, it is 85 pages long. Who has time to read 85 pages of anything these days? Not very many people that I know. So over the next few days, this blog will take the guide and take a few pages and give the "Cliff-notes" version of what the guide says. Please note that this advice is given with no guarantees and Southeast Marine Sales and Service holds no responsibility for the advice given here.

Two Methods of Registering your Recreational vessel: Through the State or Federally, through the Coast Guard.

The numbers must be displayed on both sides of the boat and towards the front.

Equipment Requirements

Life jackets: All vessels must carry one for each passenger and any boat 16 feet or longer must carry a throwable flotation device.
Children under 13 MUST wear a life jacket while on a boat unless they are in an enclosed cabin.
Everyone must wear a Coast Guard approved jacket while engaging in water sports (ie: tubing, waterskiing, wake boarding, etc.)

2013 X-Star- The Next Generation

The new MasterCraft X-Star is truly amazing. The riders on the Pro Tour are doing unheard of tricks behind it. It is definitely cements MasterCraft as the boat to have for wakeboarders of all levels. The new MasterCraft has improved to create a monster wake that is sizes previously thought incomprehensible. Here at Southeast Marine we cannot wait to get our hands on the new X-Star and try it out and get it front of all of you. As soon as we can there will be pictures and videos on our Facebook page and website so make sure to follow us! A Cobalt Boater's Dictionary

Your ownership of a Cobalt boat entitles you to use loud and often nautical terms of every stripe: those that have come fully into the vernacular — “learn the ropes,” for example – and those that remain damp and obscure — the onomatopoetic “garbling,” for example, “the illegal practice of mixing cargo with garbage.” No garbling around here. None whatsoever, as we invite you to talk the talk just as confidently as your Cobalt . . . er . . . walks the walk. Do be careful then, as nautical terms do sometimes make for unworkable metaphors.

Anchor’s aweigh: Your cry to all aboard once the anchor has just cleared the bottom, signaling that you’re underway on a morning of absolute fun.
Amidships: midway between the bow and stern of your Cobalt
Astern: at the rear of your boat
Ballast: a sophisticated set of tanks and their controls used to control buoyancy and stability on the Cobalt WSS boats
Beam: the width of your Cobalt at its widest point
Belay: to secure a rope by winding on a pin or cleat
Bilge: the lower part of the inner hull, the deep-V hull that contributes so mightily to your Cobalt’s smooth, oh so smooth ride
Binnacle: the case in which a compass is kept
Brightwork: exposed polished metal on your Cobalt, pretty much everywhere on your Cobalt
Buoy: a floating object of defined shape and color, anchored at a given position to serve as an aid to navigation, a floating object frequently struck by other boaters staring at your beautiful new Cobalt 243
Chine: an angle on the hull, reversed on Cobalt hulls to enhance stability and strength
Escutcheon: that area on the stern where you have lovingly displayed your Cobalt’s given name
Freeboard: distance between the waterline and the gunwale on your Cobalt, a safe, eminently workable distance
Gunwale: upper edge of your Cobalt’s side
Handsomely: in a slow, even motion as in the retrieval of a line, as in “My, my, my. That Cobalt surely does leave the dock handsomely.”
Keelhauling: maritime punishment in which the condemned sailor is dragged under the keel of a wooden ship, the barnacles doing their worst on the poor man; in fact, keelhauling simply will no longer work as a punishment for or deterrent to on-the-
water misbehavior, such is the smooth perfection of the Cobalt hullKnot: a unit of speed – one nautical mile (1.1508 landlocked mile) per hour
Land lubber: a person unfamiliar with being on the sea; also; a person unlucky enough to have never boarded a Cobalt
Lanyard: a rope or line for fastening aboard your boat
Larboard: the left side of a Cobalt, less common of course than portside, the counterpart of starboard, the right side of the boat
Marina: a docking facility for boats and yachts, the scene of obvious and uncontrollable envy on the part of otherwise quite decent, quite lovable owners of boats manufactured somewhere other than Neodesha, Kansas
Planing: when a fast-moving Cobalt skims over the water instead of pushing through it; the adverb/adjective pair most frequently attached to a Cobalt’s planning – “essentially instant”
Scuttlebutt: a barrel with a hole from which sailors would drink; hence, a shipboard drinking fountain and therefore, in modern naval slang, “gossip”; a term now used almost exclusively at boat shows in the context of the Cobalt innovations about to be introduced for the new model year
Skipper: the captain of the boat, as in “Skipper, are you truly this talented, or are you relying on the Livorsi engine controls, standard on all Cobalt twin-engine powertrains to dock your 303?”
Transom: the transverse members of the boat’s construction at the stern, an aft wall of sorts to which the drive portion of the sterndrive is attached
Windlass: a winch used to raise your boat’s anchor

2012 Lake Conway Wipeout
