Cottage Style Chest of Drawers From the 1980's to Now

You know that furniture from the 80's, the heavy, over-the top wood kind often carved with some sort of floral pattern. Of course, to pull this look off one had to pair it with a luxe velveteen couch. Ahh the 80's! My favorite decade. Something things I'd keep, like the neon colors and the totally tubular music. The furniture? Not so much!

This is the top drawer that I took out and replaced with baskets. Someone asked me this week, when you do you decide to remove the drawer? Just when it's missing or broken? And the answer to that is, Yes. Usually. In this case I loved the slatted look of all of the bottom drawers, gave it a very cottage-y feel, but this top drawer really dated it.

Sure I could've painted it or even filled in that handsome carving and stuck it right back in. But I've got a better idea that I'll be sharing with you soon. I think you'll agree, this was a case when a perfectly good drawer had to go!

And as it is, I think it turned out pretty amazingly!

Adding baskets is one of my very favorite things to do. I love the look and it adds so much more interest in my opinion.

To leave the pulls or remove the pulls? That is always the question. In this case they stayed, got a little coat of La Craie {The Chalk} in Vanille, plus some distressing for good measure.

Ya'll don't point out the fact that I spelled Picasso's name incorrectly on that chalkboard up there, m'kay?

Can't wait to show you the rouge drawer! I'll bet you won't even recognize it!

Pottery Barn Inspired Coffee & End Table Revival

The story of these tables is kind of a funny one. I'm not sure what their original state was. All I know is, once I got them the were fully lacquered and shellacked. Now, I don't want to go about telling you what you should or should not like. I'm just saying the last time I enjoyed lacquer it was the 1980's and I was dying for a full set of black lacquer furniture - which I finally got about 10 years later. A decade too late.

So these days, when I see lacquer, it kind of brings back bad memories. And these tables were no exception.

Add to that some painting pet peeves, like the one pictured above and their previous finish had to go!

I thought about doing something drastically different with their new finish. After all, I wondered if you couldn't see them before AND after - in person - how much of a difference would you really be able to tell?

You wouldn't be able to see yourself in the mirror-like surface of the shellacked tops. Shiny tops aren't so bad. On some things. But I'm really more of a matte kind of gal myself.

And you wouldn't be able to feel that somehow never ending tacky feeling that lacquer can leave behind.

But this you could see and it's another one of my pet peeves. Granted it's the underside of the table top and you probably wouldn't see it all that often but I wonder, if you bought this table and it was like this, wouldn't you be disappointed that someone didn't take more time, pay more attention to details?

Once all of the shellac was removed you could see the true beauty of the wood underneath. I love it's naturally worn look.

Then I covered the lacquer in La Craie {The Chalk} Furniture Paint in Wrought Iron.

Added a healthy dose of distressing.....

...and some burlap knobs for good measure and, Voila', updated, modern and reminiscent of one of my favorite inspirations - Pottery Barn!

Much better, right?

Hey! Now, listen. I'm not cheating on Pinterest. I'm just like everybody else - I'm still in love. But sometimes it's kind of like falling down the rabbit hole. You're there for one reason and three hours, 3742 pins later you still haven't accomplished it. Know what I mean?

I'm a home decor and diy blogger and I love having a specific place to go for just these things. Where experts, bloggers and everyone else congregate, ask questions and answer them, too! And that place is Hometalk.

I'll never forget the first post I read on Hometalk: 'How to keep ants out of my Hummingbird feeder'. And all I could think was, genius! I've always wondered that! Seriously.

A Look at My Dream Kitchen

If you follow me on Facebook, you probably already know about my super-duper shiny new fridge. It's the prettiest thing in my kitchen. I love that refrigerator. It lights up like an airport every time I open it with it's sleek blue LED lights. Some times I open it just to look at it. True story.

But it begs the question, what does my dream kitchen look like? I know what my dream refrigerator looks like. But what if I could love my WHOLE kitchen?

Well. It's large. Very large. You know, the size kitchen you can fit your entire extended family in since it's the place every one seems to congregate any way. In fact, it looks a lot like the one above that's filled with Electrolux appliances.

And it has to have two ovens. If they are double wall ovens like these from Electrolux's Suite Design, then even better.

Naturally there's a farmtable, like this one, in there, too.

A butcher block island with a beverage center. Oh! And one of those ice makers that produces crystal clear ice cubes. How pretty would that be!

My dream kitchen is industrial farmhouse chic. Is that even a thing?

It would be great, too, if all of my appliances were as pretty as my refrigerator. Beautiful appliances that complement one another and that fit into the kitchen like they were built for it - like a counter-depth refrigerator!

And as much as I love beauty, what good is it without functionality?

I'm not a chef or anything but I do love to cook and it's great to know that Electrolux offers a suite of matching appliances that are stylish and sleek but most important are ingeniously designed to enable professional results.

That and the fact that the Electrolux dishwasher can hold up to 180 items in a single load, well that's a dream in itself!

DIY Farmtable ~ West Elm Style

I have a love affair with Farm Tables. The more two-tone the better. Though, I do find myself loving the weathered allover look more and more these days. The first farm table we ever built we built for ourselves. Which in my business, doing something for yourself, almost never happens.

You can see our farmhouse style table here. Though you won't be seeing a finished picture of it. That's because it didn't turn out a perfectly. Not like the one above. The one we're GIVING away to charity. And as excited as I am, I'm also sad to see it go....

The new one started out just the same as ours. Wood, glue. Lots of cutting and screws.

We built it with the same hands. It's just as substantial. It seats 10, just like mine. So what's the difference between mine and the amazing table above - besides that fact that my precious little ones' finger prints are underneath?

THIS. It's as simple as that.

There was no Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint when my table was growing up. So it got latex instead. Latex. That covered it's gorgeous wood grain completely, instead of blanketing it in velvety smooth all natural perfection.

Milk Paint.

Where I get my beloved two-toned look without sacrificing the beautiful wood grain underneath and the ability to apply an all natural food grade hemp oil to seal the top. Sigh.....

Yes. That's the difference in my table and this one. And what a difference it is!

Can you believe by this time next Wednesday someone will call this beauty theirs?! And have the satisfaction of knowing they've benefitted a great cause, The Statesboro Food Bank. AND that their brand new table is covered in and sealed with all natural products - Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint.

Needless to say, MY table will be getting a makeover!

Of course that stain is still just a stain and it will be until someone, somewhere can make a comparable product that doesn't given me a migraine when using it. But then beauty can always be painless. More on that another time!

Miss Mustard Seed Yellow Dresser A Dresser Revival

I love coming across a dresser with this many drawers! They aren't easy to find but make a glorious makeover when you do. This one has great bones, if a little outdated. All she needed was a nice coat of sunny yellow paint - in Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint Yellow and some updated hardware.

I like to reuse the hardware when I can, at the very least I save old hardware to be used on another project, but sometimes it's the hardware that dates the piece the most. Then there's the dealing with ghost the old hardware leaves behind...

And drilling new holes is never the most fun part.
{See, the old hardware doesn't look so bad all their own. They'll be great on a future piece.}

Deciding on paint color and hardware is the hardest part because, to me, it's what makes the most difference.

Here she is all brightened up with a new coat of sunny yellow paint and updated hardware.

And it makes all the difference in the world! Don't get me wrong, sometimes a nice wood piece is great here and there...

But then you can't add a nice pop of turquoise without this beautiful yellow, now can you!

The Opening of Nostalgia A Store Revival

Most times a decision to open your own business is a lengthy one. Debbie {Refresh Restyle} and I had two weeks.

Two weeks to turn this into something....pretty.

We had our work cut out for us. Our first day with keys in hand, Debbie took a shoulder to this wall and down it came. {I wish you could've been there to see that! It was an amazing sight!} And that's pretty much how the rest of this revival went. It was hard, hard work.

Say hello to what would become our 22ft chalkboard wall. 13 years ago this was a Subway. That wall has been here ever since. Even in the Formal wear shop that was here just before us.

This little half wall - also a leftover from Subway - we affectionately dubbed our Minecraft Wall. And believe me, there were many, many time when we wished it had been a game of Minecraft!

This was our "surgery wall". So named because it looked like an unlicensed physician had performed surgery on it. It also blocked access to our bathrooms. It had to go.

We had so much help completing this project - husbands and children included!

Don't forget those before and after pics, Mom!

Just in front of our soon to be chalkboard wall we had to pull up a ton of not-so-lovely forest green carpet. Only to find that there was a ton of glue and VCT tile stuck to the sub flooring which we had hoped to stain.

When we realized staining over all that glue wouldn't be an option we installed some plywood panels. Stained and gussied up, they look like a great old floor. We did the same in the display windows upfront after removing the green indoor outdoor carpet.

Just when things started to get really hard....I got a cold, the whole family came down with the stomach bug one. at. a. time. and we were working night and day, I'd get little reminders to keep on going. So many friends, old and new, came by to cheer us on. They told us we would be blessed and that they just knew our business would thrive. So we kept pushing on and in just 2 weeks.....

Our name was on the door. It was official. We were Nostalgia!

Anyone who walked in couldn't believe it was the same place. That included us.

No more Subway wall. A giant (22ft to be exact!) chalkboard wall in it's place. Much better, no?

No more Minecraft wall. Yes. Believe it or not, that is the same wall. Just covered in pretty.

Our Workshop and Classroom and phase II of our store. Can't wait to share the 2nd phase with you!

Easily the most beautiful thing about our store is all of the support we've received from old friends, new friends and even strangers. You've given us strength and courage. And for that, we are eternally grateful!

First, I gathered my supplies. Burlap scrap - check! Metal sheeting left over from another project - check! Paint - check! And the awesome supplies the folks over at Cutting Edge Stencils sent me - check, check and double check!

I love it when things work like they're supposed to! I used the Cutting Edge roller brush to roll paint onto the burlap. It was perfect and easy.

All there was left to do was to wait for the paint to dry and then hot glue it to my metal sheet. I added a striped burlap hanger and, voila', she was done!

Now I have another great place to put all of those photos I've been meaning to display.

It's the perfect amount of sophistication and burlap. Two of my favorite combos.

And nothing beats a trendy Ikat design.

Except maybe those picture of two adorable little boys. Then, I am biased.

I have been keeping such a huge secret....

It has been killing me not to spill the beans...

But today I finally get to do just that!

Together with my partner Debbie of Refresh Restyle, I'm opening my very own storefront - Nostalgia! We will continue to carry our Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint and our La Craie (The Chalk) furniture paint lines as well as our painted furniture - of course! But, we have many more exciting things in the works, too. We'll also be scheduling our first classes in the new location next week!

I Took the Reading Month Pledge with LeapFrog

We've always been big believers in reading with our kids. Mostly because we love to read and because it's fun. Also, leading the busy lives we do there's just something that feels good about setting aside at least 20 minutes each day to read with your child. That and it makes them smarter to boot! It's tough enough out there! Why not arm them with an extra 1.8 million words per year? That's why we took the Reading Month Pledge on LeapFrog's Facebook Page.

The first thing we did when we found out we were expecting child #2 two was to build him his very own bookcase - just like big brother's.

And he loves his books just as much as mommy, daddy and big brother, too. When our Tag Jr came in the mail he was the first one to the drawer for the screwdriver so he could "help" open his package. {Screwdriver not need. Photo included for sheer cuteness factor.}

With his Tag Jr he's encouraged to read even more and he enjoys that Scout says his name. It's also perfect for on the go and it's made just for those adorable little hands!

He loves being able to place Scout over a picture to hear the sounds or to hear Leap tell him "Hello!".

If there are cars or trucks involved, even better! Here he is reading to his trucks about trucks with one of his favorite characters - Tow Mater.

Did you know that there's a strong correlation between a child's academic performance and his ability to read? And when you consider that for every year you spend reading your lifetime earning potential markedly increases that 20 minutes suddenly seems very doable, doesn't it?

People often ask me, how are you so creative? And while there's certainly more than one right answer I truly believe one of them is because I've always been an avid reader. I consider a book to be one of the greatest escapes, vacations and adventures ever! So how about it? Will you take the pledge with me?

My Junking Trip To Monroe, GA Cherry Hill at The Mill

My husband is the type to sign up for a 4+ mile grueling obstacle course race. I am the type of person to tag along because there is good "junking" to be done on the way. My husband got a muddy medal and some scrapes and bruises. And while I'm not one to knock healthy living, I sort of feel like he got the short end of the stick on this trip.

Monroe, Georgia home of Cherry Hill Antique Mall - a 55,000 sq foot building of pure awesomeness. It's located in a 120 year old restored cotton mill and has over 400 vendor spaces. And I wanted one of everything!

I'm a sucker for lighting. The quirkier, the better. I also love, love, love industrial lighting. The above is a montage of several of my favorites.

I love this old fan turned lamp. The chippy piece it's sitting on ain't bad either!

Plywood circles, corrugated cardboard and some dowel rods look like a million bucks when paired with a light bulb. But this one can be had for just $110.00.

It's industrial. It's jute. What more could you ask for?

Seriously. I could've just moved in! Give me a cup of tea and it's almost as good as a trip to an English Country garden, no?

Even the bathrooms were awesome! Have I told you I love a good industrial look?

Old bread cart. I also love anything with casters. And wood.

I am going to be redoing my studio/office and I really wanted these card catalogs for storage. But there's so much left to do in there before shopping for storage. Loved these though.

There's a turquoise cart selling on IKEA for $49.99 that I've been dying to get. It's about half the size of this vintage one. I was determined to bring this one home until my husband convinced me we couldn't a) fit it into the car and were weren't b) going to strap it to the top of our car for the 3 1/2 hr ride home. Hrmph

You may not see it, but this door is amazing to me.

See that old egg basket on the left of the table there? Got it. See that ladder that goes all the way to the ceiling? Wanted it.

Not exactly sure what this is, technically. But I believe it's meant to be a cooler. That's how I would've used it anyway.

I'm thinking you guys don't even need any words from on this one.

Rice bin. I seriously wanted just about everything in this store!

This giant rolling cart was calling my name. Sure it was huge. Sure it was $500 but I was extremely tempted to load up all the stuff my husband said wouldn't fit on or in our car and push this bad boy all the way home!

Great, great, great old suitcases. Love the old window, too.

While this is meant to be a display of burlap and flower magnets, I'm diggin the whole set-up.

I love every little thing that I got and I can't wait to show what I do with it all. We managed to get it all in the car and still have room for all of us. Next time though, I'm going back with a trailer!

P.S. There were more great places right across the street from this one but I didn't get to stop there this trip. Who's game for another trip in the near future?

DIY Pallet Photo Frames with Mod Podge Photo Transfer

If you're anything like me you have approximately 1.4 million digital images stored somewhere that have never seen the light of day. And it's a shame really, isn't it!

That's why I knew exactly what I would do when I found out I got to work with Mod PodgePhoto Transfer Medium. It was time to bring some of those photos out into the light.

Of course, since I work with wood on a daily basis it only made sense for me to transfer these photos to wood. We made these wooden frames from pallet wood. Three boards wide with strips of pallet wood on the back to hold it all together. I left the wood natural so the aging and patina you see here occurred all by itself. Beautiful, isn't it!

I used these photos that I took at a birthday party almost a year ago. I took the digital files to Office Max and had them print me color copies on regular copy paper. Be sure to have them reverse (mirror-image) your photo or graphic, especially if it has words or letters. It will come out backward otherwise. I trimmed the photos down to get rid of any white edges as the medium is not transparent.

Now it's time to get to work!

Looks a little scary at first. You apply enough medium to completely cover your photo copy until you can no longer see any of the photo through the medium.

See! It almost disappears against the white background. Once you've coated it completely it's time to apply it to your surface. Make sure to press gently from the center out to remove any air bubbles.

And now, you wait! This is the absolute hardest part. From here, you must let it sit for 24 hours to cure before removing the paper.

After you've waited 24 hours for the medium to cure it's time to remove the paper. Place a damp towel or sponge over the paper and let it sit for 2 minutes.

Now it's time to gently rub the paper away from your image being careful not to press too hard and remove part of your image.

Rub in a circular motion until all of the paper has been removed.

Have a dust pan on hand!

Now. I told you before to rub gently so as not to accidentally remove any of your image. But being me, I actually want to remove some of the image. I was going for more of a rugged look so while I was careful around their faces I purposefully rubbed some of the image away, especially where the wooden slats came together. And then I went back with a sanding block and rounded off the edges of each image a bit.

I especially like the more rustic look here! I think it works nicely with the old door in the background.

And finally, I sealed each of the images with my Matte Mod Podge, which I ALWAYS have on hand and use for everything.

And there you have it! It's as easy as that to get some of those photos out of your computer and onto your walls. Or any other place you'd like to put them since you can use this medium on fabric, glass, metal, wood and terra cots pots (I know this because I also made some lovely pots, too!).

My Spring Tablescape Makeover with World Market

There are a million things in my house that I still need to do. You know how that is?

How does that saying go? The only person not happy with a contractor's work is a contractor's wife (or husband - because not all contractors are boys!) - because a contractor's house is never done. Well, I totally get that. With all the work I do for others the work in my own home always takes a back seat. I'm not complaining, mind you! But it is nice to get something done around here every now and again.

I was fortunate enough to be included as a spotlight blogger for a World Market campaign with Pollinate Media and to share with you their Victorian Isles Collection. This got my wheels spinning. What room will I work with? What should I do? And as soon as I saw the collection I KNEW! The Victorian Isles Collection was practically made for my kitchen. I love it when that happens! It includes my most favorite colors and the palette that I'm already using for my kitchen.

I've been meaning to get to work on my eat-in kitchen area since....forever. I inherited this kitchen table from my great aunt and uncle when they passed away. And for that reason alone it isn't an ordinary, average, everyday table but it also served as an overflow table for every Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. This makes it even more special. Even though I truly do not love the tile top I haven't been able to change a thing...until now.

I have finally decided it's time for a change. I will be removing the top and making another. I will be repurposing the current top in some other way in my home since I can't stand to lose it altogether. And these dishes and terrarium will look stunning on the new top I have in mind for the table.

This bench was a hand-me-down from a good friend who moved across the country and couldn't take this old church pew with her. {Love you Joy!} When I got it from her I recovered the bottom to match my decor and then I didn't do very much else with it. Until I had the not so bright idea to add back rests. Not my best idea.

Spotting these pillows from World Market instantly made me realize what the bench needed. These beautiful pillows will soon a have the gorgeous backdrop they deserve.

What I really, really love about these products, and all of World Market's products, is that they are so budget friendly. Normally, I wouldn't buy pillows. I'd find a fabric and make my own. These large rectangular pillows are under $25 bucks! Even a die-hard DIYer like me appreciates that you can't diy it yourself for that little.

There were so many great products to choose from in this collection. It was so hard to decide!

I did wind up getting the cute little birdies and this amazing terrarium.

I also loved these plates and since I knew my Eat-in area needed an update, these were a must!

$5.99 for the small plate and only $7.99 for the large. You can't beat that!

I LOVED these pillows but, alas, they wouldn't quite have worked for my space. It wasn't for lack of trying though. I was so tempted.

I can't help but wonder what she's thinking about. She looks quite pleased about it, whatever it is.

More gorgeous pillows. Can you tell I have a thing for pillows?

Like I said, it was very difficult to choose but choose I did and I couldn't be happier with what I picked out.

I cannot wait to complete my Eat-in Kitchen makeover so that my bench and table will be worthy of all my great finds. I'm seeing another World Market shopping trip in my near future. Hmmm...maybe some new chairs from World Market to go with my made-over table!

Super-Duper Exciting Announcement La Craie Premium Furniture Paint

You know those serendipitous moments where you know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are in exactly the spot you are suppose to be in? It doesn't happen often but when it does you know and good things come of it.

I had one of those moments back in October just before I traveled to the Southern Blogger's Conference. It was all because my child said, 'Mom, you could redo that!' and when he did a lady spun around, pointed a finger and said, 'You're Jamie!'. And the rest is history. My Milk Paint Display Case The Revival That Shouldn't Have Been

I am going to say something I rarely ever say. There are some things you can't fix.

Or maybe a better way to say it is, there are some things you shouldn't fix. Now. You're looking at this picture and maybe you're confused. Looks fine to me.

Even the before picture isn't SO bad. But, I'm telling you, she's hiding an ugly, ugly secret!

Press-board. That evil, evil stuff that grabs at moisture like a sponge and then splits, cracks and generally falls apart. There is no fixing it. Replacing it, especially for this piece would've meant rebuilding the entire thing and what would've been the point of that?

So why did I even buy it? Good question. I have asked myself that very same thing since the day I brought it home nearly 6 months ago.

Well. She has a story, like everything does and her's goes like this.

I was trolling our local Facebook yard sale page when I came across a photo of this cabinet for sale. I had just completed this china hutch for a friend and I couldn't wait to do another. Actually, I wanted one of my own.

I immediately messaged the lady and made an offer. Her response, which was puzzling, would you offer me a dollar more? A dollar more. Hmmm.

I thought about it for a minute and decided I didn't need to know why. I'm not going to argue over a dollar. She needed me to come and get it immediately because she was moving and had to be out that day. I sent my husband by to give it the once over (lesson learned there!) and then the both of us went back to pick it up.

One look at it and I knew that I had not only over paid (by more than a dollar!) but that I'd never be able to use it as I had hoped. So why didn't I back out?

When my husband went by to look at it the woman was visibly upset. It turns out she had recently lost her husband and she was having to move from their family home as a result. She was in love with her china cabinet that her husband had given her as a Mother's Day present when their adult son was just a boy. But she had to part with it and a lot of her other possessions as a result of her move. Just before his death her husband had made a bet with her. He told her, I bet you can't get a dollar more than such and such for that thing! But she did. She got a dollar more from me.

How could I have said, nevermind, to that story?

Even if the top looked as though it might never have been cleaned. Or dusted. Like, EVER.

And this was the drawer AFTER I scrubbed it, sanded it and given up.

So how would I use this? I couldn't let it go to waste. I loved it's story.

And I loved these pulls, don't you?

As it turned out the store where I offer my Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint recently sold the display shelves I had been using for the paint. It was time for something else. Something that I would never, never entertain the thought of selling but something that would make a lovely display. Light bulb moment.

A nice coat (or 3) of white paint. A silver Rustoleum Metallic for the pulls....

Some funky contact paper for that awful drawer...

And she cleans up quite nicely!

But don't let her fool you! She's still hiding something. Then again, aren't we all?

I am more excited to be an honorary cowgirl that I think any normal person has a right to be.

See. I'm a southern girl through and through but I haven't always been a country girl.

And certainly not a cowgirl. These days I live on 10 acres in the country, own 12 chickens, 3
dogs and a rabbit. But if I had my way I'd have cows, horses, sheep and
pigs, too.

It may not sound like a glamorous life but one look
at how we revive things down south at Southern Revivals and you'll see
that even chickens can be divas!

Southern Revivals was born out of pure necessity. A way to save not only
the life of old or forgotten furniture but also as a way to save mine.
You can read the About Me section of my blog to read my personal story.

Reviving old furniture is so therapeutic and rewarding. Like watching a
Phoenix rise from the ashes. A reminder that no matter how bad things
get they can always be clean up and made beautiful again. The marks,
scratches and scars received along the way add character, tell a story
and only serve to enhance their beauty. It's amazing how much like old furniture we are, isn't it?

I would be remiss if I failed to mention that I just plain love ~~purdy~~ pretty things. I feel so blessed to
be able to do what I love and add beauty to the lives of others. When I
first started Southern Revivals my only hope was that maybe, just maybe,
some people would buy my furniture so I'd be able to keep on doing it.
And now here I am an honorary cowgirl! Life is amazing!

Thanks for having me as your guest. It truly is an honor.

Lucketts Green Vintage Secretary The color YOU picked!

Vintage Secretary finished in Lucketts Green Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint, Bonding Agent and Furniture Wax
A couple of weeks ago we had a fun little on my Facebook page when I asked for your helping choosing a color for this secretary.

I had it narrowed down. Shutter Gray or Lucketts Green. 202 comments later and green won by a hair! That just means I'll do gray on the next project because I can't wait to use that either.

I can't deny how much I love how this turned out. This green is amazing.

And that perfectly authentic chippy finish that only milk paint can give.

I chose to keep the hardware as-is since they already had a lovely patina all their own. The veneer on the drawers was paper thin and came off in sheets so I re-stained the wood underneath and then painted over that.

Even the key is gorgeous!

It still has an old key chain attached that reads:
FIRE
WINDSTORM
AUTOMOBILE
INSURANCE

I chose to keep the inside of desk and shelving its original mahogany finish.

I rubbed the inside down with Hemp Oil to rejuvenate the wood and for added protection.

I love this cheery green! It makes me want to plant a garden. In my house.

My First {EVER} Milk Paint Class A Teaching Revival

My Very First {EVER} Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint Class

And by 'EVER' I mean I've only ever taught preschool....to preschoolers. Grown-ups are a whole other ballgame as is teaching a skill! It's weird to me because I've learned by trial and error and where does one begin to teach that in a class?!

Refreshments are always a good place to start, no?

I may or may not have been a little nervous. My family sent me flowers. That was sweet. I will always remember that!

I got the classroom all set up the day before and decorated with various Milk Paint painted frames. These are examples of the project we'd be doing in class that day. {Pictured on right is Flow Blue, Left Ironstone}

The Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint color chart so everyone could pick their favorite to work with. {This frame was done in Kitchen Scale}

Having everything done the day before was the only reason I slept that night. Everyone got a FAQ sheet, a color chart, a mason jar (because there is nothing better to use!), a paint brush, stir stick, measuring cup and picture frame. I also laid out notepads and pencils for note taking...because, you know, I'm a teacher.

The worst part about being nervous is that you forget to take pictures DURING the class. I hate that! I remembered pics before and I remembered pictures after. Sadly, I remembered so late that this picture only includes half of the class. And thankfully these guys were willing to humor me and pose for a picture. I might've begged a little, truth be told.

I hate that I missed getting pictures during class and of all of my "students"! I had a wonderful time teaching this class and I hope everyone who attended did as well. I didn't pass out even once!

Custom Built Pallet Wood Bookshelf ~ Pottery Barn Style

I always get excited when someone asks if I just redo furniture or if I build some, too. It also kind of bums be out because I really wish I had more time for custom builds than I do. Then people would already know the answer. Well, today is all about a custom built piece! No before pictures of this Pottery Barn style bookshelf that was custom built for the end of a client's kitchen counter. But don't let that fool you! It's still a revival. The back of the shelf is done with perfectly weathered, perfectly marked and perfectly worn pallet wood.

I never get tired of the pallet wood look. And my signature Pottery Barn black finish that first made its debut with my Pottery Barn Style Dresser never gets old either.

I don't know. There's just something about black that stops my heart every time. It's so classic and timeless.

When my client first contacted me and asked me to come take a look at a project she had in mind and then showed me the end of her counter and said, 'Think I could put a bookshelf here?', I of course say, Sure!

Then I think, wait, how do I do this so that it doesn't just look like a box stuck on the end of her cabinet that she and her family are bumping into every time they walk by?

See. I always think I can, sometimes I can't but I always think I can. Finally after giving it a good bit of thought I decided that if I kept the top open and rounded the top and the sides that would keep it from being too boxy.

Less boxy meant that it would blend in to her counter better without looking like an out of place add-on.

And by now you guys are fully aware of my affinity for adding legs. To everything.

I am not left-brained by nature. The whole measuring part of what I do does not come naturally to me as demonstrated by the photo above. Luckily it was an easy enough fix.

We brought it back the next day and I breathed a sigh of relief as it fit like a glove and looked so at home in its space at the end of a counter. I wish you could see her Bramble Co black distressed desk that sits right across from the bookshelf. They look like they were made for each other.

I love a challenge and I love it even more when I say, Yeah, I can do that!' and it turns out that I actually can!

A 1940s Vanity Dresser & Mirror Revival

I recently revived an old vanity dresser with mirror for a client. I'm not certain on it's age but I'm guessing the time period to be between 1930s - 1940s. It started out life with a stained wood finish and at some point got an updated yellow one.

Somewhere along the way she lost her mirror. Her new yellow paint was applied over loose veneer and water had made it's way underneath that veneer. Water, paired with a latex finish is a virtual petri dish for growing mold....and growing mold she was. Poor girl!

Originally, before I realized the extent of her damage, I thought I'd just remove the paint and apply a nice *chalk paint finish. I quickly realized upon removing the paint there would be more to it than that. The loose veneer, instead of being removed, had been caulked or primed into place along the base of the vanity leaving it bubbling underneath and allowing moisture to accumulate between the veneer and the wood underneath. This called for the emergency removal of approximately nine hundred and sixty seven pieces of veneer. Have I ever told ya'll how much I hate removing veneer??

But it was necessary to save her life so that's what I did!

But then, when all the hard work was done, there she was. A nice clean, blank canvas. And even though I still have a veneer removing blister, it was totally worth it!

This time she got a white *chalk paint finish, which I think suits her much more, with little pops of very berry pink when her drawers are opened.

New shabby chic pulls to complete the look and give her a very dainty appearance which makes her perfect for a little girl's room. Because that's exactly where she's going!

Of course she needs to be fun, too and I think her little pink drawer sides achieve just that.

It was finally time for a new mirror. I opted to have the mirror place INSIDE the frame as opposed to it's original fit which called for it to be placed outside the frame and rest on the upper portion of the vanity. I don't know, I just like this better.

I left the original mirror and little glass shelf that came with the vanity table itself. I just clean it up really well with my handy dandy Fish Foam (LOVE that stuff) and it was almost as good as new. Not too new, mind you! We like those little dents and scratches here and there. After all this tells her story and we wouldn't want to erase that.

She has gorgeous lines. She's fresh and new and is living the good life with a little girl who loves her. Doesn't get better than that!

Loaded Baked Potato Dip Getting Ready for the Big Game with Rubbermaid

We're like that couple on the commercial who has friends over watching football but no one can cheer because it'll wake the baby. Yeah. But we still party anyway. We just party with the baby!

I married my husband in part because he was the only guy in my life willing to teach me about football. He never got annoyed with me. Not even when I insisted penalties for blocking in the back were ridiculous - I mean, you're running BEHIND the person. Your job is to block. How do you NOT block in the back??

I live in a house filled with boys. Even my dogs are boys. Except one. So, if you can't beat 'em, you might as well join 'em. And as it turns out, I really do love football!

Football food ain't bad either! I could eat finger foods for every meal for the rest of my life. And I like any excuse to have a party...and go shopping.

But because it's just us partying we always have leftovers. Plus, I don't want to stand in the kitchen all day while everyone else is on the couch watching the game so I love my new Rubbermaid containers that I got from Target. They make my job easier. I mixed and stored all our game day food the night before.

I even served the food in my Rubbermaid containers. Then once the party was over, right back in my new Rubbermaid containers!

My drawers are a lot happier, too. Plus, I can always find matching lids since mine lock together when stored.

LOADED BAKED POTATO DIP

16 oz Sour Cream

Half a bag of Real Bacon Bits (or more, if you like)

Approx 6 green onions (or more to taste)

About a cup of sharp cheddar (but you know, if you love it, you might like more!)

Mix it all up. Put it in the fridge. Give it an hour or so for the flavors to meld and then serve it with some heavy duty potato chips and BAM! you've got one really easy, really delish party dip!

Updating a Vintage Highboy A Shabby Chic Revival

Every time I see chippy paint I want it to tell me a story. Don't you? It looks like it knows about many wonderful things and could entertain you for hours with stories of days gone by. This vintage highboy didn't always look so interesting before it was dressed up in Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in Linen. And I was brave and did it (mostly) without the use of the bonding agent because I wanted it to have a time worn look.

This is what the Highboy looked like before. Super brown, super shiny and super 1990. Which is fine if you like that sort of thing. But if you're looking for a statement piece then you should put some Miss Mustard Seed on it! (I totally wrote that while signing Beyonce'!) Putting the milk paint on without the bonding agent is super risky for a high shine piece like this but since I'm teaching a milk paint class at the end of the month I wanted to do everything the "wrong" way so I would be better prepared to teach this class.

Man, I love it when the wrong way turns out so right! Because I had to scrub away and reapply repeatedly the finish looks just as it would if this piece were really old (and really painted) a long, long time ago. Of course, if you didn't want this much chippy you'd use the bonding agent and distress yourself - which if I were telling a client how to do this that's exactly what I would've suggested. There's definitely something scary about giving over your control to the paint.

But when it winds up looking like this, you think, maybe I'll let the paint make all my decisions from now on!

The Best of 2012 Furniture Revivals A Revival Review

Putting together this Southern Revivals Best of 2012 Furniture Revivals really put things into perspective for me. Like first of all, where does a year go anymore?? You blink and you might just miss it! And second, it's hard for me to believe Southern Revivals isn't even a year old yet. While some of my posts date back to 2011 I technically didn't start my business until April of 2012. All posts prior to that were originally posted on my personal blog well before I started Southern Revivals.

I am amazed at how much has been accomplished in such a short time especially since most of it was totally unplanned and certainly unexpected. I feel very blessed and grateful and not a day goes by that I don't feel like pinching myself just to make sure this is all real.

So, here's the best of 2012 as determined by your visits to my blog and here's to an even better 2013 for each and every one of us! Cheers!

A China Hutch Revival
This is one of those transformations that sits with you for a while. I loved it before, during and after I finished it but ever since it's gone on to it's new home I have to walk by the perfect spot for it in mine. Then of course I'm reminded that nothing so lovely will ever come along again. Ok. Maybe that's not quite true but I still wish I had kept it! You know how you find the perfect piece in the store but decide to wait on getting it only to go back and find it's not there. You get that sinking feeling and then you long for it for like, ever.
