Learning About Choreography

Prof. Michiko Kobayashi wanted her students to construct cultural portfolios and present them to an audience that are new to the community. She asked if ESL students can visit her class. During the activity ESL students and hers exchanged thoughts about the places they came from and the different traditions they had.

Mini Conference - Fall 2

Students displayed their skills in many ways. The bulletin boards, presentations, slide shows, animations, hands on productions like ginger bread houses and wholesome waffle breakfast were some of the activities we all shared. We had a very colorful, tasty ad healthy catering by Chartwell's. Our visitors enjoyed the fun activities our students were show casing with their teachers.

Friday Social - Holidays

This was the last Friday Social hour of the semester. Students will all be busy taking finals next week. They made snow flakes for it is the season and the campus is covered with the white stuff... They also enjoyed playing their favorite board games.

Thanksgiving Dinner

We had a fantastic time at our Thanksgiving Dinner. There were around 80 people with their families, friends, and host families. ESL Program offered the main dish of Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, bread, hot cider and drinks. Rest of the people contributed the menu with their favorite side dishes... They were all delicious... Almost all of the food was eaten, that is a very good sign! Our special thanks go to St. Jude's Episcopal Church for providing us with the kitchen and dining hall...

International Cultural Evening

We had many nationalities represented in this fun evening. There was a buffet of international food, fashion show, slide presentations, singing and dancing... Everyone had a great time.

Dis-Ability Obstacle Course

Our students visited the Dis-Ability Awareness activities as part of our Friday Social Hour. The experiments they tried helped them understand how it feels to be blind, autistic, ADHD or Dyslexic...

Try drawing a star, by tracing and using a mirror... This was to demonstrate how a dyslexic person sees objects.

While stacking a large number of plastic cups, answer a set of questions.
A test of attention and focus to find out if one has ADHD or how an ADHD person feels when multi-tasking.

Finding the paper clips in a bowl of rice with eyes closed simulates a blind persons senses.

Eagles, Owls and Hawks

A group of our ESL Students with their teachers Georgia Smith and Flora Bohne visited the Southwest Wildlife Foundation and learned a lot about the magnificent birds of prey.

Golden Eagle

This eagle is 8 years old and named Scout. He is an adult.

His favorite food is rabbit. He will hunt deer, foxes, wolves, coyote, and elk.

They are found all over the world. Utah has more Golden Eagles than any other place in the world.

Golden Eagles have the most powerful feet and massive, sharp talons. They can exert 600 lbs per square inch pressure.

This one was rescued in Southern Wyoming.

Golden Eagles can see for 5-6 miles.
Their average nesting territory is about 10 miles radius.

Great Horned Owl is the largest owl in this area.

It hunts at night. This one is a female owl. She is used for school programs.

She has extremely sharp talons, and 9 months old.

Harris Hawk likes to hunt for rabbits. It kills rabbit and eats what he wants, has sharp talons, stronger than a hawk.

Master Falconer and educator Martin Tyner uses gloves as a padded perch for comfort.

This hawk is 25 years old. Usually hawks live 7-10 years in the wild. This hawk was bred in captivity.

It eats little birds, mice, rabbits, lizards, but not snakes or prairie dogs.

It will eat birds 2 times larger than him.

You can read all about it here, and it is a very accurate story, especially when you get to the paragraph at the bottom, it all makes sense...

"Ironically, the name of turkeys in the Turkish language is even more geographically off base; they're called Hindi, short for "bird from India." The Turks, better than anyone, knew the birds weren't from their homeland, but may have originally thought they came from India -- thanks to a little miscalculation by Columbus."

Veterans Day

Breakfast at the Alumni House

We started at the Alumni House with a wonderful breakfast prepared by the Cedar City Veterans Group. After the breakfast, we all went to the ceremony at the Veteran Park. Later, we went to The Grind and had a great time practicing the new words and phrases learned that are pertinent to the day's subject, like: honor, service, veteran, wound, etc. and how it changed the meaning by adding prepositions to them. We developed a game to practice different uses of these words and prepositional phrases.

Breakfast was delicious. We had scrambled eggs, hash brown, bacon, pancakes, cinnamon cream cheese, pancake syrup and hot chocolate.

This retired couple served in Turkey for three years, can speak Turkish and adopted two boys from Turkey. They raised 12 children and now enjoying their retirement in Cedar City.

Our students really enjoyed the breakfast and had a lot of questions about the military service and women serving in the military.

Our very own veteran and ESL teacher, Georgia Smith and her husband...

Our teacher Nina Hansen and student Jung Shih (Cherrie) from Taiwan loved the breakfast.

This was one of the best flag themed blouses I've ever seen.

After the breakfast, we all went to the Veterans' Park for the ceremony.

In memory of the ones we lost in service, the flag was brought to half staff and there was a gun salute and a moment of silence.

We then took the students to The Grind and hung out there. While having our drinks around the big table, we had our lesson for the day. The teachers explained the meaning of the various words related to the theme of the day and then they taught prepositional phrases. We all played a game that gave us the opportunity to use the newly learned words and phrases.

Fun, Sweets, Students, Staff, Teachers, and Children

We had a great time. Our students and staff brought their little children in darling costumes. We had a costume competition among the children, they all won prizes. Our two biggest winners were the two princesses. Students enjoyed making cookie monster houses and decorated cookies... It was a very colorful and fun evening...

Sheep Parade

This weekend was the Cedar City Livestock & Heritage Festival. They brought the sheep down from the mountains to the lower elevations for the winter. The sheep came down right behind my house, paraded through the Main Street and they are taken to Enoch to pasture during the cold months. There were tractors, horses and much more in the parade. We then followed the parade to the Cross Hollow Event Center where they had all kinds of vendors, shows, games, and food. We participated in the Dutch Oven Cook Off voting... Could not wait for the results as it was getting pretty tiring, we came back home...

Fun with Friends

What fun it was for all our students and teachers! I got 10 pumpkins, but they went through them real quick and were asking for more.... Thanks to Mindy B. Young, and 10 more pumpkins she brought from her own garden, we carved total of 20 pumpkins... It was messy, but we did clean it up. I saved the seeds and they will be roasted to be enjoyed next week...
