As we welcome a new year, many of us are making plans and setting goals for the months ahead. Why not consider the financial benefits of solar energy? What better way to kick off the year than by taking a step towards a more sustainable and financially secure future! In today’s rapidly changing world, one of the smartest financial moves you can make is to add value to your home with solar energy.

Hedging Against Inflation

In an economy marked by inflation and rising energy costs, taking control of your energy expenses can be a game-changer. Adding solar to your home provides financial stability amid rising energy costs. Adding solar energy to your home enhances the value of your home. Solar-powered homes tend to sell faster and at higher prices, offering insulation from inflation. By generating your electricity from the sun, you can significantly reduce and sometimes eliminate your reliance on traditional grid electricity. With solar panels on your roof or as a ground-mounted system, you become the master of your energy destiny.

Having a fixed, predictable, and lower energy expense can provide you with peace of mind and financial stability. With solar energy, you’re not at the mercy of fluctuating energy prices. You insulate yourself from financial instability and can allocate resources to other essential areas of your life.

Adding Value to Your Home

The many benefits of solar power extend beyond immediate cost savings. They include enhancing the value of your home. According to Zillow, “Not only can adding solar panels to a home save energy costs and help the environment, it also can potentially increase a home’s value.” Solar panels are an increasingly attractive feature for homebuyers.

According to a recent article in Forbes, “Solar panels are increasingly seen as a valuable addition to any home.” When potential buyers see a solar-powered home, they envision a property with lower energy costs and a reduced carbon footprint. Solar panels are an appealing investment. The added value they bring can set your home apart in a competitive real estate market. “Homes with solar panels or solar systems have been proven to sell 20% faster than those without them.” This trend is likely to continue.

As you start off the new year, consider the benefits of adding value to your home with solar energy. Consulting with an experienced North Georgia solar installer like Southern View Energy can help you navigate all of the technical details. SVE has been in business since 2009, assisting homeowners in taking control of their energy costs and adding value to their homes.

(Referencing the band – how many AC/DC song titles* are in this high voltage blog?)

Are you ready? The inverter is the essential piece of equipment that takes the direct current (DC) energy current produced by the solar panels and converts it to the alternating current (AC) usable electric current for homes and businesses. There are different types of inverters: microinverters and string inverters. String inverters can be AC or DC coupled. String inverters are also referred to as central inverters.

Don’t be thunderstruck, here are a few more technical details:

Microinverters:

There is one inverter for each panel that converts energy from DC to AC at the panel level. The inverter then aggregates the AC output from all the panels and channels it into the electric panel to cover the electrical demand. Microinverters are great for houses with some shading. Each panel produces what it can throughout the day independent of the other panels around it. Solar production can be tracked down to the panel level. SVE typically uses Enphase microinverters.

String Inverters:

A string inverter system aggregates the power output of groups of solar panels in a system into “strings”. The multiple strings of solar panels then connect to a single inverter where electricity is converted from DC to AC electricity. String inverters are great for areas without shading from trees, chimneys, or other interferences that might interrupt the performance of a panel that is part of a string. Unlike microinverters, the output of the whole string is affected if one solar panel is producing less than the others. Additionally, string inverters don’t allow panel-level monitoring and it’s difficult to add additions to an array without purchasing a new inverter.

Every Situation is Unique

Choosing an inverter is not a shot in the dark; it depends on the situation, i.e., the size of the installation, whether it is a home or business, and if batteries will be included as part of the installation. SVE uses a selection of top-notch inverters including Tesla, Sol-Ark, Enphase, and Sunny Boy brands. And of course, money talks.

Call SVE at 678.833.5191 or email us to explore how solar can help you manage your ever-increasing power bills, provide backup energy in a nick of time when the grid’s system’s down, generate clean energy to fill your EV, and more!

As we welcome the dawn of a new year, it’s that time again to make our resolutions. While many of us pledge to hit the gym, eat healthier or learn a new skill, have you considered adding a solar resolution to your list? In 2024, solar energy presents a compelling case for resolutions that not only benefit your wallet but also the planet. Following are some reasons why you should consider making solar resolutions your top priority for the year ahead.

Seizing Solar Savings

With the cost of traditional energy sources on the rise, embracing solar power makes more financial sense than ever before. In 2022, tax incentives for solar installations received a significant boost. Homeowners with tax liabilities have more advantages to transition to solar. By harnessing the power of the sun, you can significantly reduce your energy bills and, at the same time, take advantage of favorable tax credits. It’s a win-win situation for your wallet.

Hedge Against the Rising Cost of Energy

Energy costs have been steadily increasing over the years, and there’s no sign of them slowing down. By adopting solar energy, you can hedge against the rising cost of energy. Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, a resource that’s both free and abundant. When you generate your own electricity, you’re less reliant on costly utility companies. In essence solar resolutions are your ticket to insulating your budget from future energy price hikes.

Powering up Your Energy Independence

Energy independence is an empowering resolution. Solar energy makes you less reliant on the grid, giving you more control over your power generation and consumption. With solar panels and backup batteries, you’ll have peace of mind during power outages, knowing you can rely on your own energy resource. This newfound independence allows you to meet your energy needs efficiently and sustainably.

Energize With Solar Power

As we embark on this solar-powered journey in 2024, consider making solar resolutions that will benefit you and the environment. With tax incentives, rising energy costs, and the potential for substantial savings, going solar is a smart financial move. It’s a resolution that not only helps your wallet, but also contributes to a greener, more sustainable future.

Why not make solar resolutions a part of your 2024 New Year’s plans? Contact Southern View Energy at 678.833.5191 or email info@SouthernViewEnergy.com to explore how solar power can brighten your year and help you achieve your solar-powered goals. Here’s to a brighter, more sustainable future!

You’ve invested in a solar system and have decided you want batteries for backup to ensure you always have power for the basics. How do you determine how much backup you need and how long it will last?

There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Answer for This!

Each household has its own rhythm. There is a base level of power that is always cycling to keep refrigerators, HVACs, and other systems on 24/7. Then there is everything else, charging a car, powering a well or pool pump, medical devices, and so on.

The first step in SVE’s analysis process to determine how much battery backup you’ll need, is to calculate your power usage. Ideally you will provide 12-months of actual power bills, or a copy of an online report showing the monthly kWh (kilowatt hours) and how much you spend each month. If you moved in recently, then we’ll look at as many months as you have. The highest and lowest months are considered and then we average the 12-months of usage and cost.

Here’s an Example

Let’s say you have a 12kW system installed with 30kWh of battery backup. Your goal is to offset a large portion of your energy usage and have backup storage that covers the basics for a few days. There is a storm, and the grid goes down. Your solar system will sense that the grid is down and will switch over to batteries until the grid comes back. As soon as there is ample light, the solar system will produce power. It doesn’t have to be sunny to generate power. However, to reach full production capacity it needs to be a sunny, clear day. In Georgia in December, we get about 3 ½ – 4 hours of full sunlight. In June we get 6 – 6 ½ of full sunlight. For this sized system we would not recommend more than 40kWh of backup storage because the system could not fill more batteries than that in December.

The solar system will:

Produce about 10kW AC each hour on a sunny day.

Take about 3-hours to fill 30kWh of battery backup.

Run the basics and refill the batteries at the same time.

How Long Will the Batteries Last?

That depends on which household items you need to keep powered. Of course, you would want enough battery backup to support your basics like fridges, freezers, HVAC, the well pump, lights, and outlets for at least 2-3 days if the grid is down. We can estimate how much power is needed daily once you let us know what needs to be covered.

Once your battery backup system is installed, we suggest you simulate a power outage to learn how the equipment works and to monitor your power usage. That way, you will be comfortable with the system and know how to maximize the batteries when you need them.

Contact SVE

Give SVE a call at 678.833.5191 or email Info@southernviewenergy.com and we’ll work together to explore solar power along with adding battery backup to cover your specific needs.

The world of solar energy is often associated with eco-friendliness and environmental consciousness, and while that may be true for many, it’s important to dispel the myth that everyone who chooses solar does so solely for “green” reasons. Solar energy offers a spectrum of solutions that cater to diverse needs, wants and desires. Let’s explore some practical reasons why solar is becoming an attractive choice for families like yours in Northeast Georgia.

Reliable Power During Outages

When the power goes out, the impact can range from inconvenient to life-threatening, depending upon your circumstances. For families with well pumps, a power outage means no water. Some communities experience power outages more frequently than others and these disruptions can lead to food spoilage and overall discomfort.

Ensuring Family Comfort and Safety

Parents want to ensure the comfort and safety of their families. A solar-powered home provides a reliable source of electricity even during blackouts, ensuring that essential appliances and systems continue to function.

Supporting Medical Devices

Many households rely on medical devices that need consistent power supply. Solar energy with backup batteries can be a lifesaver for individuals with these needs.

Powering Home Offices

With the increase of remote work from home, solar power ensures that computers and phones stay charged, allowing you to maintain productivity and stay connected during power outages.

Safety for All Ages

For older couples, navigating a darkened home during a power outage can be hazardous. Solar-powered homes eliminate this risk by providing uninterrupted lighting and power.

Why Solar and Batteries Make Sense

While backup generators that run on fuel are an option, solar paired with backup batteries often offers a superior solution. Here’s why:

Reliability: Solar and batteries have no moving parts and require minimal maintenance. They come with extensive warranties, making them a long-term investment.

Quiet and Seamless: Solar and batteries work quietly and seamlessly and the transition from the grid to battery backup is virtually instantaneous.

Monitoring and Control: Solar systems provide real-time data through user-friendly apps and display windows. You can track your energy usage, monitor solar generation, check battery status and see if any excess energy is sent back to the grid. You have complete control over your energy requirements.

Solar for the holidays or any season is a great gift idea! Solar PV installations don’t require batteries when the system is connected to the grid, which is why most solar installations don’t require batteries.

Solar panels produce electricity when there is ample sunlight. They generate power that feeds into the electric panel to offset electricity usage. Less power and in some instances, no power is drawn from the grid when the panels are activated by the sunlight. When the solar PV system produces more electricity than is used, the excess feeds back to the grid.

Of course, batteries are great to have. They can be included upfront or added later. If added later, the savings on your electric bills will help pay for them. What’s even better is that batteries are eligible for the 30% solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) when they are included with solar panel installations or when they are purchased separately.

So here’s the perfect holiday gift idea that doesn’t require batteries!

If you consider the perfect gift to be one that is used and enjoyed all year long, then, how perfect is a gift that you can use 365 days a year, 24/7, is warrantied for 25 years, needs minimal to no upkeep, and significantly reduces your electrical bill?

You know the answer – Solar energy! Solar panels on your roof or a ground mounted system in your yard is the perfect gift!

A new car is a popular holiday gift, but vehicles depreciate as soon as they roll off the lot. Solar panels generate power throughout the day, every day. And if your energy costs rise as the cost per kilowatt hour continues to increase, the value of the energy the solar system produces is worth even more!

Call SVE at 678.833.5191 or email Info@southernviewenergy.com to discuss the idea of giving a solar system as a gift for the holidays. We can’t give you the moon, but we can give you the closest star!

Solar PV systems work with or without batteries and when grid-tied, excess electricity is directed back to the power grid, resulting in utility compensation. Batteries are useful for running low-draw appliances and in instances of power outages by providing temporary power. Deciding on whether to include a battery in the system depends on individual electricity needs, financial considerations, and grid reliability.

A common misconception about solar PV (photovoltaic) systems is that battery storage is required for the system to function. Solar PV systems can be designed to work with or without batteries.

As mentioned in our recent blog post, “How Solar Works,” excess electricity from a solar PV system can be fed back into the power grid if the system is grid-tied. This provides the owner compensation or credit from the utility company. If the solar PV system also includes batteries, the excess electricity will fill the batteries first, and then send any excess back to the utility company.

Why would you need a battery?

If a solar PV system is grid tied (most of them are), having a battery is a choice.

Do you need or want a battery? If you have a well pump, the answer is usually “yes.” A battery is essential to have water. Battery power can also run the refrigerator, lights, computers, and small appliances that run on 120V (common household current).

Grid Reliability Considerations

In an electric grid outage, batteries cannot support the heavy, instantaneous draw of air conditioning, heating, clothes dryers, or electric ovens. Basically, any major appliance that runs off a 240V plug.

Appliances that heat and cool will exhaust the battery storage in a matter of hours. A hybrid system: a solar PV system with batteries to power lower draw electrical items, and a generator for the higher draw electrical items, is a great solution.

You may want a battery for the security it offers. You can rest easy knowing your basic electricity needs are covered with the backup battery.

Because of the significant investment for solar PV systems, some people opt to install solar first and add batteries later. They use the savings on their electricity bills to help pay for the batteries.

However, those who live in an area that frequently loses power may choose to install the battery backup first. The electric grid keeps the battery charged and on stand-by for emergencies. The battery is never without power for basic electricity needs and a solar PV system can be added later.

Solar is a Great Investment

Solar power will pay for itself over time because it offsets your electric bills. Batteries provide power when the electric grid goes down and might offset some of its cost. If a solar PV system includes a battery backup, the battery can be used at night to offset electric utility bills. If the utility charges a higher rate during the day, the battery can be used to avoid peak demand charges by quickly reducing power consumption during intervals of high demand, known as peak shaving.

Give SVE a call at 678.833.5191 or email Info@southernviewenergy.com and we’ll help you determine “To battery or not to battery.” We can calculate how much battery backup you’ll require to cover your basic needs for a few days, or until the sun comes out or the grid is restored.

Solar power works by sunlight stimulating semiconductors in solar panels, triggering an electric current which is converted to AC power for everyday use.

The post How Solar Works appeared first on Southern View Energy|Georgia Certified Solar Contractor|GA, NC, SC|southernviewenergy.com.

The overall process of how solar works involves capturing sunlight (the sun’s radiation) and converting the radiation into usable electricity through various technologies.

Following is a brief overview of how solar power works:

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Cells:

Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) cells, are the primary components in solar power systems. These panels are made up of semiconductor materials, such as silicon, which can generate an electric current when exposed to sunlight.

The Photovoltaic Process:

When sunlight (photons) strikes the surface of the solar panels, it excites the electrons in the semiconductor material. This excitation creates an electric current as electrons flow through the material.

Electric Current Conversion:

Solar panels produce direct current (DC) and therefore, the current must be converted to alternating current (AC). An inverter is used for this process. Most appliances as well as the electrical grid use AC power, so the inverter is necessary for making the electricity generated by solar panels compatible with standard electrical systems.

Electricity Consumption or Grid Connection:

The converted AC electricity can be used to power electrical devices and appliances directly within the property. If excess electricity is generated, it can be fed back into the grid if the system is grid-tied (most systems are grid-tied), allowing for compensation or credit from the utility company.

To Battery or Not to Battery?

Stay tuned for our next blog post on 11/28/23 which will discuss adding optional battery storage to capture and use excess electricity instead of feeding it back to the grid.

Learn more about how solar can work for you or your business by giving SVE a call at 678.833.5151 or email Info@southernviewenergy.com so we can explore the best option for your unique situation.
