Lucky mini burlap canvas art

SO... what did I do with that one last clover from the Dollar Tree pack of 12? I made it the star of it's own piece of art. I took a 6x6 inch burlap canvas and glued a glitter clover to the center. Then I took some thickers stickers from my stash and hot glued them on too, spelling out lucky.

Easy and quick! I think this is my favorite St. Patrick's Day project so far.

Thrifty St. Patrick's Day Tablescape

I have never set a St. Patrick's Day tablescape before, but I managed to pull one together for this year on a low budget. I had many items on hand and managed to find some cute things at the thrift store and Dollar Tree, along with 50% off Michael's items.

The fun green glasses were a thrift store find at 79 cents each.

I already had the jute napkin rings and found some green napkins for less than a dollar a piece at another thrift store.

I picked up some stems for 50% off at Michael's to add to the arrangements. I already had the burlap wrapped jars and some faux flowers on hand.

If you've been following my St. Patrick's Day posts, you know I picked up $7 worth of items at the Dollar Tree to make a wreath and had leftovers. The remainder of the hats made cute little place setting decorations.

The wood slice was already on the table as part of the winter tablescape, so I left it out as I imagine leprechauns as woodsy type fellows.

Framed clovers

Remember my $7 St. Patrick's Day wreath from last week? And remember how I said I had leftovers? Here is another project from that $7 batch of supplies- framed clover art.

I took the leftover foam clovers and started laying them out on my work table, alternating glitter clovers and plain ones. When I had nine of them laid out, I realized they would fit perfectly on a sheet of 12x12 scrapbook paper. So I grabbed a sheet of green paper and my glue gun. Then I ran off to Michael's (well not literally- it was a day or two later) and picked up a 12x12 frame that was 40% off, making this investment less than $7. I can swap out the art by season- I'm already picturing the next batch of seasonal foamies from the Dollar Tree in here!

The pack of $1 foam clovers had 12 in it- two are on the wreath, nine here. Where is the 12th one? Stay tuned! Yet another project!

St. Patrick's Day "Kiss Me" Mason Jar Treat Jar

Want to give your sweetie some treats for St. Patrick's Day? Nothing better than a mason jar full of Hershey's kisses with almonds. They come with gold wrappers and fit nicely with a St. Patrick's day theme. Here's the jar I fixed up for my hubby:

All you need is:

a quart mason jar

treats

embellishments

free "Kiss Me I'm Irish" printable

cupcake liner

I used a free printable from Classy Clutter. I filled my jar with almond kisses and topped the jar with a green chevron cupcake liner. I pulled some green twine and sparkly wire embellishment from my stash to embellish the jar top. Then I jazzed up a band of cardstock with a piece of washi tape and wrapped it around the jar, securing with a bit of hot glue. Then I attached the printable. I also embellished the printable with a piece of ribbon.

This was a fun little gift to create with scraps from my stash.

Hope this gives you a little inspiration for using those free printables around blog land.

$7 Lucky St. Patrick's Day wreath

I mentioned on Monday when I posted my round up of 17 St. Patrick's Day ideas that I never craft or decorate for this holiday, but here are the results of the lure of all those fun shiny things at the Dollar Tree: a wreath for $7 total.

Below are the supplies (all found at Dollar Tree)

vine wreath

garland clover

pack of foam clovers

three stems of flowers (I used three different ones)

Leprichaun hats

This was pretty quick to assemble too. Aren't all my projects? If they aren't quick, I don't have time to do them.

I grabbed the hot glue gun and glued the garland shamrock to the top half of the wreath. I cut the stems from the flowers and arranged them on the bottom until they almost met the shamrock. Then I filled in with a couple of the foam shamrocks. Then I glued (er, melted the hat- be careful with that plastic) to the shamrock.

This was a lot of fun...and I have supplies left over. So it really cost less than $7. I have ideas for those leftovers too.

17 St. Patrick's Day Crafts and Decorations

For the first time ever, I'm into decorating for St. Patrick's Day. In the past, it was just one of those holidays I didn't decorate for. Wearing green is about all the celebrating I do. Which is ironic, since I have Irish ancestors and live within driving distance of the famous Savannah, Georgia, celebration.

I do like the color green and this year I was won over by all the shiny sparkly green craft supplies in the stores. I'll be showing you a few things I've made for St. Patrick's Day in a few days, but for now, here's a round up of 17 crafts and decorations .

Burlap wrapped brooch embellished vase

I mentioned on Monday that I have a stash of burlap that I need to work on. I put a very small dent in the stash by embellishing this clear glass vase. This is a really simple project, one I pinned from Uncommon Designs. All you need besides a hot glue gun and your embellishments are the vase and the burlap. I used a piece of burlap ribbon I purchased at Michael's last year.

Don't skip the folding and ironing step in their tutorial. It really does make a nicer more finished edge. Just make sure you fold evenly....ask me how I know. I must be the only person on earth that can take a 5-10 minute project and make it a 30 minute project.

I decided to put my own spin on this and embellish my vase with an old rhinestone brooch I have in my jewelry-making stash. I just pinned it on. I can change it out seasonally if I want. I think a little bright bling is perfect for the upcoming spring.

I'm over winter and ready to freshen up for spring. I've put out a few spring touches. You can see a peek of my butterfly specimen art there too.

One Dozen Burlap projects

Quick DIY pendant necklace

Hey! Hope you all have had a great week. It's been a busy hectic one here, but I did manage to put together this pendant necklace. It's a quick and easy project.

All you need to complete this are:

24 inch chain
jump rings
clasp
pendant

All of my supplies came from Michael's and as you an see, the pendant was on clearance at $1.99.

You also need a pair of jewelry wire cutters and a pair of jewelry pliers.

I removed one oval link from my chain so that I had two pieces. I attached the pendant to the two pieces of chain with jump rings and then attached the clasp pieces at the opposite ends. Done! I told you it was quick and easy.

I promptly wore my new necklace the next day.

Paper straw frame

I'm just popping in tonight with a quick little DIY project- a paper straw picture frame. I started with a blank wood frame from Michaels.

I painted it with a coat of white paint. Once it was dry, I measured the width of the edges and cut the straws to fit. I found these straws in the clearance bin at Michael's. They were Christmas straws but also perfect for Valentine's Day. I glued each straw piece with hot glue. Simple.

Valentine chalkboard coasters

I love chalkboard projects and have been meaning to do more of them. I made a framed chalkboard in 2013 and haven't gotten around to anymore. I decided that coasters would be a fun thing to paint. I started with these chipboard coasters from Michael's that were in my stash waiting for a makeover. No offense meant if you like roosters, but these were not for me.

These coasters were coated so I lightly sanded them first to make sure the paint would adhere. I ended up putting more coats than recommended by the directions on my paint because of the surface of the coasters. If you are working with plain chipboard or tile, then the standard two coats should be fine. I used the Michael's brand Craft Smart chalkboard paint.

Once they had dried and cured, I decided to decorate them in a them that is appropriate for Valentine's Day. I used a red chalk ink marker. I'm not really good at free handing script or art so I used some stencils for a little help.

The chalk marker ran under the stencils so I found it easier to outline the stencil with real chalk lightly and then go back and fill in with the chalk ink marker. Do you have any chalk art tips?

Valentine's Day Painted Birdhouse

Welcome to my little "love shack"- one for love birds. I have a small stash of unfinished birdhouses and decided that now would be the perfect time to add one as part of my Valentine's Day decor.

I started out with this:

An unfinished wood birdhouse from Michael's and some sandpaper. It's always a good idea to sand these down smooth. It's a little obvious after painting that I should have done a little more sanding.

This was one of those projects where I had an overall idea of what I wanted but didn't have the details together. They just sort of came together as I worked. I knew it was going to be red and pink. I used Americana paints Baby Pink and Craft Smart cherry cobbler. Both are acrylics.

My original idea was to have hearts on it somewhere. I have also been itching to try out some new stencils so I went to Michael's with a gift card in hand. I purchased the Martha Stewarts adhesive stencils in the scrolls set. (no hearts- we will get back to that.) Have you worked with adhesive stencils yet? Love them!

I decided to add a little border around the back.

And here is where the hearts come in- a little adornment on the top.
I had some unfinished wood hearts in my stash and I thought one would be perfect with this heart ribbon in my stash. I made a little bow for the top and glued it on. And bam- now my project has hearts!

I had fun painting this and love it, even with it's little imperfections.

Organizing under the Kitchen Sink

In the spirit of organizing in small chunks, one area at a time, I'm sharing how I organized under my kitchen sink this past fall. My results aren't as pretty as those who use pull out drawers or boxes and labels and such, but it's better than the before and it works for me.

Just how bad was the before? See for yourself. Everything was just thrown under there and I could never find what I was looking for.

So I set out to remedy this. I took out everything. Boy was the kitchen floor a mess that day. The key steps to organizing anything are to purge, sort, and then contain. Many of the items were expired and just needed to be trashed. Some things were moved to a new location. The remaining items were grouped somewhat and then placed in baskets and bins. I also used an extending shelf to add a little more room. I repurposed a empty Target nut container into storage for the dishwasher pellets. (Bottom left hand corner). Sometimes product packaging isn't very functional and it helps to find a new container.

Now I can see what's under there. Wish I could do something about that plumbing and disposal hook up but...

My favorite part was adding a command hook to the inside of the cabinet door and hanging my fun lime green mini brush and dust pan.

9 Creative Ways to Set up a Coffee Station

The urge to organize hits most people at the beginning of a new year, but for many that task can be overwhelming. Don't try to organize everything at once. Break it down into attainable tasks. Focus on one area. Today I've rounded up ideas for setting up a coffee or hot beverage station in your home. We only drink our coffee black so we only have the pot on the counter, but we sure could use some help with all those cups in the cabinet.

1. Put everything in one place by using a cart.

2. No cart? Organize everything neatly in a tiered stand. It will only take a small amount of space.

3. Set up your station in a corner with a corner shelf unit.

4. Make a nice little beverage station with a tray and some cute storage jars.

5. Turner a dresser into a table and utilize hanging hooks for cups.

6. Cute mugs are a must.

Updated winter centerpiece

The Christmas decorations had to be put away but I wasn't ready to start completely over with a tablescape. It is still winter- today's low is 25. That's one of those rare low days for us. So... I removed the "Christmas elements" and replaced them with some winter elements and left everything else in place.

I removed the colorful ornaments from the vase and bowls and went from this:

TO THIS:

A simple replacement with clear ornaments and mini frosted pinecones. The pinecones were a Big Lots find a couple of years ago. I replaced the cloche with a wood slice and some candles.

I'm still enjoying the penquins and snowflakes.
