‘Moonstone’ has been the top exhibition rose in the United States for the past 5 years and the past ten years, followed closely by ‘Gemini.’
I have had both roses since about 2001. ‘Gemini’ has always performed better for me here in the high desert. It seems to thrive in the heat; can tolerate drought; and wasn’t damaged by the heavy snow in 2006 or the brutal cold in 2011. It almost always has perfect form with high, pinpoint centers.
‘Moonstone’ has been a major disappointment for me here in my yard. I have kept it because of the luscious colors and nice foliage. But, my bush has always produced blooms with split centers. Always!
That is, until this August. All of a sudden, it has begun to produce blooms with those high, pinpoint centers. I cannot explain why. I have done nothing different in its care. But, all of a sudden, I am happy to have ‘Moonstone’ occupying space in my yard.
I’m actually rather anxious to see what it does next year. In the meantime, I am just going to enjoy it!
