…some of value…others…not so much.

If there is something on this planet that hasn't been collected, I don’t know what it is. If it has a physical presence, it’s probably been collected by someone, somewhere, at some point.
In my childhood, I collected stamps, coins, and baseball cards. Even today, there is still an urge to collect stuff. Show me a well made box, a beautiful bottle, jar, or vase, and it becomes difficult to find a reason not to keep it.

Show me an artist, and I’ll show you an art book collector.

...and this is just a very small collection

There are two kinds of collectors, the haphazard/recreational collector and the serious/purposeful collector.

This would be, on a good day, a haphazard collection. Junk, most of us would call it.

Here's a serious model car collection, one I wouldn't mind owning.

Most of us are what I would call the haphazard type. We collect stuff because we like it, it makes us feel good, satisfies some need within us, and someday we think it will be worth something.
Art collecting can be like that…and is, for most of us. My wife and I generally fall into that category, with some exceptions. Basically, we buy what we like, of good quality, affordable, and that fits well in our home. When it comes to art, our purchases are seldom planned.

The serious/purposeful collector is totally different. Their approach to collecting is like a good novel. It has a beginning, a middle and an end…and all the individual actors have an important role to play in completing the story.

…even postcards

Although there are some significant differences between the two types of collectors, all of us regardless of what we collect, can certainly benefit from the knowledge and experience of the serious collector.

So, here are a few helpful tips for those collecting art.

1) Only buy art that appeals to you. Be true to your personal taste. Acknowledge that you like certain types of art and don’t be swayed by what is fashionable or what others suggest you should like.

How about some marbles...or paintings of marbles?

…or dolls?

…or maybe thimbles?

OK…spoons!

2) Educate yourself. Familiarize yourself with all types of art. This will help solidify what appeals to you. You may even find that your taste will change. This education may be gained through art history books, museums, galleries, art expos, auctions, art magazines, etc. Figure out why some paintings “connect” with you while others do not.

3) Do your homework. Learn all you can about the artist, credentials, price structure, subject matter, genre of art, etc. How does the quality and price of your chosen painting compare with the artist’s other works…and how will it help complete your collection?

4) Be an informed buyer. Learn from those who have knowledge of the art market, gained through personal experience. Establish relationships with other art collectors, galleries, auction houses, etc. Read books about collecting art. Have a variety of sources, not just one or two.

5) Have a purpose and plan for your collection. The serious collector does not purchase any and everything they like and can afford. Instead, they narrow down and focus very specifically on particulars. For example, California Impressionists between 1940-1960, or Rockport, MA harbor scenes, or the art of William Merritt Chase’s students. Now if your’re collecting Barbie Dolls, you might want to focus on Vintage Barbie’s from 1959-1966 with dark hair and ponytails.

Good collections are well thought-out so that all the pieces in the collection relate to one another in some way. A good collection can enhance one’s understanding of a certain period of art, culture of a particular era, or even stylistic changes during an artist’s career. As each piece adds to the whole, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

6) Now, my favorite form of collecting would be fine art paintings by my favorite deceased masters. However, don’t view art primarily as an investment. I have a close friend who jokingly, every time I see him, asks how I’m feeling…suggesting that maybe I might have been diagnosed with some rare, incurable disease that will soon result in a dramatic increase in the value of his art collection. Not so fast. Investment potential of art can be somewhat unpredictable.

7) Go for quality. Buy the best you can afford. It’s better to have a small, quality collection rather than a large, average one.

SouthWind Gallery is pleased to bring you an exclusive
invitation of SouthWind Art Gallery's 2015 Collector’s
Exhibit. The gallery is featuring over 40 works from 20
regional artists representing the state of Kansas. Before
the 2015 Collector’s Exhibit is open to the public, owner,
Gary Blitsch, and assistant gallery director, Alex Olson,
has invited members of the art community, collectors and
buyers, to examine the work during an exclusive art event.

Gary Blitsch and his team always take time to ask gallery
visitors, “Which painting is your favorite?” They greet
each visitor with a jovial smile and instill an appreciation
for art that remains deep-rooted. Visitors and guests will
be able to see new and old work from their favorite regional
artists including, Louis Copt, Allan Chow, and Kim
Casebeer.

In preparation for the exhibit and collection, Gary Blitch
knew he wanted diversity in size, style, and price. He
requested one big and one small work from each selected
artist. Each art piece represents the state of Kansas in a
unique yet identifiable way.

Louis Copt represents Kansas through his landscape
paintings. He works with oil, acrylic, pastel, and
watercolor and has led numerous paintings workshops of the
Kansas Flint Hills. Copt tries to sustain high standards of
excellence in his own artistic expression and it shows in
his work.

Allan Chow is a Malaysian Chinese born landscape painter who
currently resides and owns a studio in Kansas City. His main
medium is oil on canvas. He loves sharing his interpretation
of the Kansas Flint Hills through landscape painting. Chow
paints with a palette knife, applying thick impasto in
brilliant colors found only in dreams. He can create an
extraordinary three-dimensional experience for his
audiences. During his exhibitions, viewers find it difficult
to resist the temptation to touch his paintings. Allan has
established a national following with his sophisticated
style and obvious passion for painting.

Kim Casebeer was born and raised on a family farm in Kansas.
It’s obvious that Casebeer’s deep-rooted inspiration is
pulled from the beauty of Kansas landscapes. She likes that
the simplicity of rural landscapes allow her to focus on
what’s important in a composition. Casebeer’s main
medium is oil on canvas.

Zak Barnes: Indefinable Talent

Zak Barnes joins Michael Young to provide Topeka's residents and visitors with a fun show full of surrealistic art featuring bold, bright colors. Come in and view the colorful works in "Off the Wall." The artwork comes down Feb. 28, so come in now for your chance to inspect his works in the "Off the Wall." If you've already been in, this show has so many intricate and interesting pieces you'll see something new upon return.

For those who have seen his work, it comes as no surprise to most that the inspiration for Zak Barnes' art comes from his home state of Kansas. His impressionistic plein air landscapes reveal a deep connection to his prairie roots, as does his studio work, which he describes as "loose narratives" with references to Midwestern folk art and Surrealism.

Zak has developed two distinct styles that are strongly influenced by a sense of "place" – the plen air landscape that captures timeless elements of earth and sky, and the narrative that mixes the recognizable with the improbable. Both his landscapes and more Surrealistic paintings have captured the attention of collectors from all walks of life.

The artist finds fulfillment in everyday life, taking to the road, being out in the open, loading and unloading the truck and dogs. He goes through phases where he paints in plein air. There is a physical as well as mental work in the process so it becomes a meditation and a practice. Working on site demands a concentration of attention and quickness of hand because the light changes with each passing moment. Zak paints with a brush and pallet knife, using thick impasto strokes to express his experiences and sensations through color and light.

Best Holiday Ever! Miniature Art Show – Amen to That!

'Tis the season for merriment, togetherness and welcoming people into our homes. As holiday gatherings draw near, some of us take a second look at our homes and want to do a certain amount of "freshening up."

To make my guests "oooh" and "ahhh," I turned to SouthWind Art Gallery's Miniature Art Show, offering small works at small prices.

Enter "Silver Lining II" by Michael Duane.

I had to have it. It was little and bright. The colors popped: blue, pink, purple and green with a silver lining of sunshine glowing on the rims of three rolling hills. And oh, let's not overlook how well Michael Duane can paint clouds! I took it home, and it ended up being that little something that really tied the guest bedroom together.

When I hosted my parents and in-laws – and grandmother-in-law! – for Thanksgiving, it was important to me for my house to look its best. The pastel painting complimented the furniture in our guest room perfectly. The subject matter reminds me of our family roots in Nebraska's Sandhills.

If painting is like writing where short and small is more difficult, then bravo to Mr. Duane and all the artists who submitted work in SouthWind's Miniature Art Show.

It's an amazing exhibit with wide appeal. I urge you all to come into SouthWind Art Gallery before the show closes Dec. 31.

For those just getting into art collecting, here's a way in without breaking the budget. For veteran art patrons, you might find a little attention-grabber for an under-served nook or cranny in your home.

Ned Mueller, OPAM, is an accomplished and highly respected artist, and has been painting for more than 50 years. He is a graduate of the prestigious Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles. He has participated in many of the major invitational shows in the country, including the "Artist's of America," "Great American Artist's Show," "Prix de West," "Oil Painters of America," "Pastel Society of America," "The Northwest Rendezvous Show" and the annual "Plein Air Painters of America Exhibition."

Ned coaches you and explains techniques during this workshop at the Garden House at Lake Shawnee in Topeka, Kansas. Your artwork(s) may be a portrait, figure and/or landscape, indoor or out. You may use whichever medium you prefer and may paint from a photo reference or plein air at the location. You will need to bring supplies including an easel, drop cloth, brushes, etc. Prepare to be photographed or videotaped. We've told the media about this mass of artists that will be converging on Lake Shawnee. Hope to see you there.

Why wouldn't you want to paint with Ned?!

Ned shows in some of the finest galleries in the country, has won numerous awards and is included in many fine art collections. He is a member of the Plein Air Painters of America, California Art Club, Northwest Pastel Society, Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters, Northwest Rendezvous Group, and the American Society of Marine Artists. Ned has been designated as "Master Artist" status with the Oil Painters of America and has been invited to show in the 2013 Autry Masters Show, considered the top Traditional/Impressionist show in the country.

Coming Soon: Missouri Valley Impressionists Society Juried Exhibit and Sale

Well, well, well, how time files. It seems just like yesterday that things got wild here at SouthWind, as an exhibit of bird art by Susan Rose flocked in – as well as some bird sculptures by Joyce DeCastro Volmut. The flock will fly the coop soon so come visit us at 29th and Oakley.

SouthWind Art Gallery's next big exhibit will open May 3. Be wow'ed by the talent of the Missouri Valley Impressionists Society (MVIS) artists. The best of the best from this group of talented artists will be for sale at the MVIS 2nd Annual Juried Art Show. Stephen T. Johnson, of Lawrence, will jury the exhibit. Johnson is a versatile artist known for his award-winning children's books "Alphabet City" and "A is for Art: An Abstract Alphabet."

Enjoy some nosh, mingle and chat with artists May 3 at First Friday ArtWalk.

"Fixing Up" by Richard Sneary | 1st place, 2012

MVIS was organized to promote the appreciation and development of Impressionism in and around the Missouri River Valley region. Members hail from Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri.

Artist members work in a variety of media. MVIS is one of the few organizations in the Midwest that embraces the method of painting en plein air (outside painting). The organization hosts a number of plein air paint outs each year. Learn more about the organization on its website.

Wait 'Til You Hear about the Oil Painters of America Exhibit!

Something big is coming to Topeka! Oil paintings from some of the best artists in America come to town in September. SouthWind Art Gallery at Framewoods, 29th and Oakley, will pack its walls for the Oil Painters of America (OPA) Western Regional exhibit and competition.

This event is sure to interest art enthusiasts from all over the country and is the “biggest event we’ve done in a long time,” said Gary Blitsch, Art Director. More than 100 paintings, focusing on realism, will be available to view and purchase.

You are among the first to hear about this fine art experience. Plan now for Friday, Sept. 6 when awards will be handed out, and you will have a chance to mingle with artists from all over the western half of the U.S.

While most of the works shown will be part of the OPA competition, the exhibit will also feature ten to 15 signature pieces by OPA Masters, artists of who have achieved the highest acclaim and whose works are not part of the competition.

The opportunity to host this show has really excited the staff at SouthWind Art Gallery. We hope the excitement is catching! It’s great recognition for the community as arts town, and it certainly will be a can’t-miss opportunity for any art collector.

Oil Painters of America was founded in 1991 and its membership is at 3,400 artists. The OPA Western Regional is an annual art competition of artists who reside in the western half of the U.S., Mexico and most of the Canadian providences.

Phone-in Audio Tour of Topeka’s Civil Rights Sites

Topeka has so much history that it’s hard to know it all. I’m certainly no local history expert. I do consider myself a lifelong learner, and as such I’m excited about a recently launched Audio Tour about the people and landmarks that were central to city’s role in the civil rights movement.

Important figures and historical places, including Brown v. Board, are featured in the Audio Tour. Just dial (785) 338-4041. (Mom! Dad! Now’s the time to encourage those kids to play on your phone.) The messages are short and interesting. Some sites have additional automated phone prompts – more facts to feast on! Get in the car (or on your bike) and roll through the city on a historical fact-finding mission. The weather is great for it!

While you’re out and about, take in some Topeka art. It's not an official stop on the tour, but there's always something to see at SouthWind Art Gallery, especially right no. The current exhibit pairs particularly well with local history. “Paint Topeka” showcases works from a plein air competition that sent about 50 artists into the streets to paint scenes of the capital city. See how artists depicted the Statehouse, which I learned was constructed in 1866. (Thanks Audio Tour!) Pick up a coffee table-style book to commemorate your trip and continue your learning at home.

Oh, I almost forgot. This post would not be complete without mentioning the awesomeness the of John Steuart Curry murals on the second floor of the Statehouse. "Tragic Prelude" is the centerpiece of the mural. It depicts John Brown, Bible in one hand and rifle in the other. The tour says it's one of the most recognized depictions of the abolitionist in the world. Definitely a must-see.

People like John Brown and Mamie Williams, whose story is also featured in the Audio Tour, sound like ancient history to young kids growing up today. (Just made myself sound old, didn’t I? Ooops.) Even for adults, with all the modern day distractions, it’s easy to forget the city is home to some pretty substantial historical milestones. We shouldn’t, be forgetting that though. Now there’s a cool new way to learn or further understand some of the city’s ties to the fight for civil rights.

I love First Fridays in Topeka, and many others have just as much fun as I do while out ArtWalking. We enjoy it for a variety of reasons. We love art (obviously) as well as hanging out with friends and by chance meeting an artist or two. One common agreement among First Friday-goers is the FOOD at the galleries is a must –almost as much as the free wine is. Have a nibble and maybe a little more while the ArtWalk takes you somewhere.

Hopefully it takes you to SouthWind Art Gallery, 29th and Oakley, to see the "Paint Topeka" exhibit before it's too late. The show will have you seeing Topeka in a whole new light. It features regional painters and works created from last April's plein air competition. It comes down at the end of October.

Also if you frequent SouthWind Oct. 5 and most First Fridays, you may remember the hummus that's part of the spread. MMMmmmm. A couple of people have asked me for the recipe now so I figured I would share it here.

So, enjoy. I hope it turns out as good as mine, and I hope you turn out for First Friday at SouthWind.

Hummus
Blend ingredients together in a food processor until at desired level of creaminess.
1 T garlic (or 4 garlic cloves)
3 T lemon juice
13-19 oz. can of chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
2 T. tahini
3 T. olive oil
2 T h20
1/2 t. salt
1/8 t. cayanne
1/2 t. paprika
1/2 roasted red pepper

Paint Topeka Gives Student Artist Taste of

Isabella Reed didn't think waking up before dawn on a Saturday morning sounded like fun. Yet some how Isabella's art teacher convinced her to scout out a spot in the capital city one brisk spring morning to paint. She was among 70 artists participating in SouthWind Art Gallery's "Paint Topeka" plein air competition.

The teen began painting her freshmen year when she took art class to improve her grade point average. Her art teacher Tiffany Pryor soon saw potential in Isabella's artistic talent. (The Highland Park teacher also has a painting in the exhibit.) She taught Isabella to see her own potential and helped her gain confidence in herself as an artist.

Her watercolor in the "Paint Topeka" exhibit has sold, but you can still see it at SouthWind Art Gallery now through Oct. 28, along with dozens of paintings that show a slice of life in Topeka. The exhibit features a range of artistry and features some of the best names in the region, like Debra Joy Groesser, Michael Duane, Cally Krallman, David Vollbract, Barbara Waterman-Peters and Becky Drager – mighty fine company for 17-year-old Isabella Reed to be in.

A Capitol Wren: "We Just Had to Have It!"

This here is a story of opportunities you just can’t pass up and how a series of those opportunities created meaning for a couple of Topeka citizens.

First there's Naomi Cashman, a Topeka watercolor artist in SouthWind Art Gallery’s current “Paint Topeka” exhibit. If you’re in Topeka or have ever been, you’ve probably seen Cashman’s work: one of Topeka's landmarks, the wren at Huntoon Park.

The wren was constructed in 1932 for WREN radio. It was perched outside WREN in Tonganoxie, Lawrence, and then finally moved to Topeka. The radio station closed, so the bird had been in storage and needed repainted; Cashman and a friend were just the crew for the job. “He asked me if I would help paint it with him, and I jumped at the chance,” said Cashman, who used to sculpt and paint waterfowl. That was in October 2002.

When she heard about SouthWind Art Gallery’s “Topeka Paint-out” plein air competition, it was only natural to return to Huntoon and Topeka Boulevard to paint the wren, this time as a watercolor cityscape with the Capitol in the background. It had been 10 years since she painted the wren with her friend, now deceased.

While beautiful and bright, her work, titled "A Capitol Wren," an 18”X22” watercolor, didn’t earn a judge’s award; it did, however, win over Frank Chaffin, and as it turns out, that is more meaningful.

“We just had to have it. It will go in the studio,” he said. “I’m absolutely thrilled. I’m in disbelief I got to buy it, especially being painted by the woman who painted the wren.”

Chaffin had just re-launched WREN radio station, an oldies station housed in the Lazy Toad at Fairlawn Plaza Mall. "A Capitol Wren" had the nostalgic factor the general manager was looking for.

Cashmen is one of 70 local and regional artists represented in the “Paint Topeka” competition. Come in to SouthWind Art Gallery, 29th and Oakley, and see the show now through October.

Our New House: Bare Walls to Beautifully Adorn

My new house came with a lot of bare walls. It is a much bigger space than my husband, Mike, and I had before. (“Buy larger than you need.” Ever hear that advice? Well, we took it.) Two walls in our living room remained bare as the furniture delivery men positioned the new couch. Now the living room, decorated eclectically with two Zac Barnes paintings, are signature stops on el tour de la casa de los Krings.

The fact that guests linger in our living room can be credited to the inspiring staff at SouthWind Art Gallery and the even-more inspiring artists the gallery represents. One such artist Zac Barnes is known for both his paintings of Kansas landscapes and his works featuring women and trucks, the latter of which style I prefer.

We own two Zac Barnes paintings, “Bazaar Winter II” and “Redline Decoupage.” Friends and relatives linger because the paintings are well-done and make a person think.

“Bazaar Winter” (46.5X59) depicts a winter-turned-spring scene of women bathers in a stream. The landscape spans from St. Louis to Bazaar, Kanas. “Redline Decoupage,” well, I don’t know how to explain. There’s a bull, a cat, a windmill, a serpent, woman (of course) serving up a pan of fried eggs, a woman with money on her lap, champagne and two devil cupids floating around – and somehow the subjects all tie in together for a very surreal yet cohesive experience.

It’s fun to show off the artwork, but really Mike and I sometimes just sit on our new couch and look together, converse. These paintings in our home have created moments of bonding and stimulated intellectual conversation.

While it’s cost prohibitive to move too fast too soon again, I’m ready and looking for my next purchase. Art collecting fascinates me more than it ever has. (Did you know that some art is looked at as an investment purchase?) Thanks to SouthWind’s owner Gary Blitsch for exposing me to the art gallery business, and more importantly to fine art representing the best of Kansas found in his gallery.

I’m proud to buy art in Topeka and my experience at SouthWind Art Gallery has changed my life and spurred on a love of art and art ownership in me and my husband. Plus, we just have a much more fun living room to hang out in.

What a Great Time To Be an Art Enthusiast in Topeka

My name is Lisa Coble-Krings. Off-and-on you can find me hanging out at Southwind Art Gallery, where I like learning about art & artists from Kansas. I’m a writer by profession, but I’ve not blogged much from my perspective, using my own voice. You see, I’m a multimedia communicator, and you may have watched videos I’ve edited and uploaded to this here website or photos I’ve shot for SouthWind’s Facebook page. I prefer to be behind the camera. Writing, like painting, is about putting yourself out there. I’ll try to provide some interesting tidbits about myself while I blog about being – for lack of better word – an understudy in the art business. I hope you read my blog posts. Here’s some extra motivation (a promise from Gary, the owner of SouthWind): Intermingled with my thoughts will be special deals for framing.

A little background on me: I’m a supporter of the arts, always have been. However, most recently my passion for and interest in art has been reignited thanks in large part to encouragement from and friendship with staff at SouthWind Art Gallery. Thanks for letting me use your site to contribute to the dialogue about art in Topeka. My passion for the arts is also fueled by recent cuts to state art funding. I dabbled in art throughout high school, and people who knew me growing up always knew I’d be surrounded by art - and cats, as a random matter of fact. (I own 1.) I love spending time in galleries and museums. Being around art is like an oasis and always takes my mind off of any trouble or stress in my life.

Why do I hang out at SouthWind? SouthWind Gallery is quintessentially Kansas. It’s an amazing space, so open and airy. There’s an unexpectedness here. I can look on the wall, see a wonderful painting and it could be gone the next time I come in. This is one cool business. I’ve never been that fond of sales, but the staff at SouthWind don’t come off as pushy salespeople. Gary’s in the business of building relationships, and he knows almost everyone who comes in. (If he doesn’t know you, he or his staff will get to know you.) It’s intriguing what propels people to come in the door - a painting for the new house, redecorating after a divorce, a rare print to get framed, heck, I’ve even been to a poetry reading at SouthWind. What will bring you in?

Maybe you’ll come in just to tell me you’ve read this here blog. Hint: I’m usually around during Topeka’s First Friday Artwalk and some Saturdays. Another hint: It’s a great time to visit SouthWind right now because the latest exhibit features Masters of the Midwest, including a new work by one of my favorite artists, Stan Herd. I’m also impressed by a painting of Anthony Benton Gude’s, the grandson of Thomas Hart Benton. There’s a Jim Cook and Debra Clemente that I’m fond of – so many good artists to talk about. That will have to wait for another day. Come into SouthWind and see the best of Kansas and Topeka reflected through paintings

SouthWind Gallery Announces the “Paint Topeka” Art Competition

Entry Deadline: April 13, 2012
SouthWind Gallery is organizing a juried art competition with cash prizes for the first, second, and third place winners. The competition is a one-day paint out which will take place on April 28, 2012, in Topeka, Kansas. The required subject is any aspect of Topeka,. The winning artwork selected by the jurors will be exhibited and available for sale at SouthWind Gallery from September 7, 2012 through October 27, 2012. Entry form here.

Third Place $ 100

In addition to the exhibit, SouthWind Gallery will publish an art book that will feature the winning art and all artwork chosen by jurors. A brief bio and a photo of each artist also will be included in the book. The first available date for purchase of the book will be September 7, 2012, on the opening date of the exhibit.

SubjectThe submitted artwork must draw its inspiration from the city of Topeka, Kansas. Any aspect of the city including but not limited to: landscapes, nature, architecture, businesses (exteriors and interiors), historical landmarks, parks, or other features of the city. (Maps of Topeka may be downloaded from the Visit Topeka web site,
www.visittopeka/us.com, or picked up at the Visit Topeka office, 618 S. Kansas Ave.

The competition is categorized as a “plein air” event; however, participants are not required to complete their artwork onsite during the paint-out. Artists may sketch or photograph their subject(s) on the day of the event and complete the work in their studios.

EligibilityThe competition is open to all artists who create two-dimensional original works. Acceptable media includes: acrylic, alkyd, casein, colored pencil, gouache, mixed media, oil, pastel, pen, pen and ink, scratchboard, and watercolor. Important: You must submit your artwork by this date to be eligible for inclusion in the Paint Topeka art book.

· Selection will be made from digital images only in JPG format. Digital files may be generated by scanning or high quality digital photography of the original art. Note: Quality is extremely important. This is the file from which your entries will be judged.*

Conditions of Acceptance
The following art delivery requirements apply:

· Art must be framed and ready to hang with wire
· If mailing your artwork to SouthWind Gallery, do NOT use Styrofoam peanuts or packing pellets. Also, do NOT use wood crates for shipping.
· All shipped work must arrive prepaid and in reusable cardboard shipping containers (We suggest using the foam-lined strong box specially designed for shipping art.)
SouthWind Gallery reserves the right to reject any packages using unacceptable materials as described above or that create problems for exhibit hanging.
· Only original, two-dimensional art will be accepted
· Image size of artwork (excluding frame and mat) is limited to 720 square inches
Image size is determined by multiplying the horizontal and vertical dimensions
(Example: a 24” x 30” painting equals 720 inches)
· Works on paper should be glazed with acrylic only
· The overall weight of the artwork should not exceed 35 lbs.

JudgingArt accepted for exhibit will be selected by three. Jurors and will include one executive member from the following organizations: The greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce, Visit Topeka, and Downtown Topeka, Inc.

Notification of artists regarding artwork accepted for exhibit and art book:
Artists will be notified of the status of their art on June 5, 2012.

Sales and CommissionsAll selected entries must be available for exhibit and sale. Artists will receive a 50 percent commission on original work that is sold. Artists are asked to assign a valid price that reflects current market value for their work. Artists will receive $10 for each fine art print that is sold. Commissions will be paid by SouthWind Gallery within 30 days of the date of sale.

SouthWind Gallery will publish an art book that includes all art accepted for exhibit, as well as bios and photos of each artist. The book will be available for purchase beginning Sept. 7, 201. Artists will not receive commissions on books that are sold.

SouthWind Gallery also will publish fine art prints of select artwork from the juried exhibition. Artists will receive a flat $10 commission for each print that is sold. (See Copyright Agreement section for details.) The artwork will be professionally reproduced by ArtPrintsExpress of Topeka.

Limited Copyright Agreement – Book Publication, Print Sales and Publicity

SouthWind Gallery will retain the copyrights to artwork entered in this competition. IMPORTANT: Your paid entry and artwork submission in the Paint Topeka Art Competition is considered your acceptance of this copyright agreement.

SouthWind Gallery’s Copyright for the Paint Topeka Competition will include:
1) The right to publish all accepted artwork for a book to be sold through SouthWind Gallery and other select retailers.
2) The right to publish and sell fine art prints of accepted artwork from this competition through January 1, 2015.
3) The right to publicize the event through various media. The art and artists selected for this exhibit will receive publicity through the promotional efforts of SouthWind Gallery. In addition, the art will be available for viewing on SouthWind Gallery’s web site.

Insurance/Liability
SouthWind Gallery exercises the same care and respect for the art accepted for this competition as it does for its own property. However, SouthWind Gallery does not insure art while in transit or while being exhibited either offsite or at SouthWind Gallery. Artists must provide their own insurance.

Hard-to-find Vintage Prints Available

Just in time for Christmas, a little piece of history to add to the nostalgia of the season. We have found a small collection of prints from the Kansas Prairie Print Makers group that flourished in the 1930s, along with prints from one of their contemporaries and from one of their forbearers.

The Kansas-based Prairie Print Makers group formed on December 28, 1930, in the Lindsborg, Kansas, studio of Swedish-born Birger Sandzen. Instead of portraying the mythical Midwest, the Prairie Print Makers show us an un-nostalgic view of everyday life.

The group eventually had more than 100 members throughout North America. Many members were professional artists, such as Charles B. Rogers (“Edge of the Field” left top), an instructor at Bethany College in Lindsborg and William Dickerson (“Country Grain Elevator” left second), Director of the Wichita Art Association.

In 1910 The Chicago Society of Etchers, (Charles B. Keeler “Ronda, the Impregnable” third left) was the first American printing group to begin issuing editions of prints, and Percival Rosseau (“Partners” bottom), best known for his hunting dong portraiture, lived just a generation before the Prairie Print Makers. In the United States, prints have long been considered to be an ideal art form because of their affordability. So please stop in to see us and all of the available work here in the gallery.

Statewide Kansas-150 Art Competition and Call For Entries

SouthWind Gallery is proud to announce the Call for Entries for the Kansas-150 Art Competition.

In 2011, Kansas will celebrate 150 years of statehood. Communities, individuals and state agencies throughout Kansas are planning events to commemorate the 150-year milestone. Through our involvement with Savor Kansas, a new grassroots effort that includes numerous organizations coming together to celebrate and showcase Kansas' arts and culture, SouthWind Gallery has established the Kansas-150 Art Competition. Savor Kansas will take place in Topeka, from June 1, 2011 through June 30, 2011, and will feature events involving visual arts, performing arts and culinary arts.

Kansas-150 Art Competition: Awards & Book Publication

The Kansas-150 Art Competition is a juried competition in which jurors will select 150 works for exhibition and sale by SouthWind Gallery. Three artists will be awarded monetary prizes for their artwork. These awards are:

        1st Place, $1,000
        2nd Place, $750
        3rd Place, $500

In addition, a number of Purchase Awards, funded by corporate and individual patrons, will be given to artists whose works are selected from the 150 entries. SouthWind Gallery will host an awards ceremony and sale of the Top 150 artworks at a Gala in June 2011, and will exhibit the art in its gallery from June 3, 2011-July 15, 2011.

SouthWind Gallery also will publish an art book that showcases all 150 pieces of art, and includes information about each of the artists whose work is selected. This is the second art book published by the gallery. In 2008, SouthWind Gallery, in cooperation with the KU Alumni Association, published “A Spring Day on the Hill: Art Inspired by the University of Kansas, which featured the work of 68 artists.

The SouthWind Gallery Kansas-150 Art Competition is open to all artists over the age of 18, working in two-dimensional media, who presently reside in, or have previously resided in Kansas, or have ties to the state.

The submitted artwork must draw its inspiration from the state of Kansas. That inspiration may include, but is not limited to depictions of rural landscapes, cityscapes, people, animals, city life, rural life, state landmarks and monuments, state or city parks and recreational areas. Paintings of historical Kansas events and indigenous plant or animal paintings are also acceptable.

We are very excited to also work with two nationally recognized visual art professionals Neil Patterson, OPAM, President, Oil Painters of America; and Kristen Hoerth, Editor in Chief, Southwest Art Magazine who will head the panel of jurors.

Kansas Landscape and Musings on Life in Kansas Merge at SouthWind Gallery This Friday

SouthWind Gallery focuses on Kansas landscapes and life for this month’s First Friday Art Walk event, November 5, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. We are showcasing landscape paintings by renowned Flint Hills artist Judith Mackey (Cottonwood Falls, KS) and rising-star artist Debra Schroer (Strong City, KS), in an exhibit titled, “Big Sky Prairie”. (This exhibit closes November 15, 2010, so make sure you see it soon!)

Big Sky Prairie: Featuring New Paintings by Judith Mackey and Deb Schroer Opens at SouthWind Gallery

SouthWind Gallery, 3074 SW 29th, Topeka, premiers Big Sky Prairie, a two-person exhibit featuring new works by renowned Flint Hills artist Judith Mackey and rising-star Kansas artist Deb Schroer, on Friday, October 1, 2010, in conjunction with Topeka’s First Friday Art Walk. An Artists’ Reception will take place in the evening at SouthWind Gallery from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The Big Sky Prairie exhibit runs through November 15, 2010.

In her 40-year career as a professional artist, Judith Mackey has established herself as one of the leading plein air painters in the United States. She is best known for her impressionist oil paintings of the Flints Hills and has devoted much of her life to visually documenting the history and rare beauty of this landscape where she lives and works. Her efforts have culminated in an extraordinary body of work.

Artist Deb Schroer has spent most of her life in Strong City, Kansas--population 584, located in the heart of the Flint Hills. She has put down deep roots in this beautiful and unique land, but also is making a name for herself in the art world as a gifted plein air painter. Her work captures the natural beauty of the Flint Hills landscape, the excitement of the American rodeo, and poignant moments in the everyday lives of people and animals. With her broad understanding of color, she produces an incredibly rich pallet that gives her work immense depth and feeling.

Showing concurrently with the Big Sky Prairie exhibit are bronze works by award winning sculptor Catherine Hale Robins, of Lawrence, Kansas.

Also showing at SouthWind Gallery is an art display of unique floral arrangements by members of the Floral Art Club of Topeka. Seven original floral designs will be exhibited in conjunction with the Big Sky Prairie art exhibit opening. The Floral Art Club of Topeka is a non-professional group dedicated to the study of the art of floral design, and maintains membership in the Kansas Assoc. of Garden Clubs and the National Garden Club. The club’s floral artists have created designs to complement the Big Sky Prairie art exhibit and feature the natural beauty of the Kansas Flint Hills. Floral artists include Trella Anderson, Jayne Cafer, Anita Dreiling, Deesie Jackson, Carolyn Litwin, and Maggie Warren.

Members of the Floral Art Club of Topeka will display seven original floral designs in conjunction with the Big Sky Prairie art exhibit opening on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010. In June, SouthWind Gallery invited 35 artists to participate in a one-day plein air painting competition at the beautiful Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee. The paint-out was part of a fundraising event organized by the Friends of Ted Ensley Gardens. The public is invited to attend the juried art exhibit and sale on Sunday, September 19, 2010, from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., at the Garden House at Lake Shawnee, 37th & West Edge Road. Jurors for the art competition are Gary Blitsch and Sharon Hotchkiss of SouthWind Gallery.

The World Class Ensley Gardens would not be possible without the public and private partnership created between Friends of the Ted Ensley Gardens and Shawnee County Parks & Recreation. All proceeds from the art sale will be used to support local artists and to ensure that the Ted Ensley Gardens remain "World Class Gardens" for all to enjoy. *

Kansas author Cheryl Unruh, a writer for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Emporia Gazette, will be at SouthWind Gallery on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010 from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. to sign copies of her newly-published book, Flyover People: Life on the Ground in a Rectangular State.

Joining Cheryl for the book signing are Stan Herd and Louis Copt, well-known Kansas artists who are the subjects of one of her essays included in the book.

Excerpt from Flyover People: Life on the Ground in a Rectangular State (Hangin' with Louis and Stan, p. 35) "These are not just any two guys throwing paint on the building at Sixth and Merchant, but two of the finest artists Kansas has produced...They had been working on the mural off and on for several weeks when I met them. I spent an hour or so hanging out with these painters as they shaped and shaded the underbelly of storm clouds on their Flint Hills scene."

Cheryl began writing her weekly Flyover People column for the Emporia Gazette in 2003. Eighty of her Flyover People columns are included in the 197-page, softcover book. Cheryl's writing has received awards from the Kansas Press Association, the Kansas Association of Broadcasters and the Kansas Sampler Foundation. Her commentaries have aired on Kansas Public Radio in Lawrence and KTWU public television in Topeka.

If you are a Kansan, you will love this book, and if you have only flown over this state on your way to someplace else, you will love this book. Cheryl's writing style is lyrical, entertaining and true to the soul of Kansas and its people. You won't want to put the book down until you've read each and every beautifully written story!

DeAnn Melton - Featured in "The New Impressionsts"

DeAnn Melton earned her M.F.A. from the University of Arizona, Tucson, in 1977. Her paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions from the East Coast to the West. Her work has been published in books, newspapers and magazines, and featured in several television productions in Arizona. Melton and her husband, artist James Pringle Cook, maintain homes and studios in Tucson, AZ and Eskridge, Kansas.

“The New Impressionists” a group show featuring works by an elite group of painters. The exhibit includes three artists new to SouthWind Gallery: James Pringle Cook and DeAnn Melton, Tucson, AZ; and Neil Patterson, Bragg Creek, Alberta Canada; and three returning artists: renowned artist Stan Herd, and gifted fellow artists Debra Clemente, and Zak Barnes, all of Lawrence, Kansas. The exhibit will be open until September 15, 2010.
