Instead of portraying the mythical Midwest, the Prairie Print Makers show us an un-nostalgic view of everyday life.

The group eventually had more than 100 members throughout North America. Many members were professional artists, such as Charles B. Rogers (“Edge of the Field” left top), an instructor at Bethany College in Lindsborg and William Dickerson (“Country Grain Elevator” left second), Director of the Wichita Art Association.

Print Making Background in the US

In 1910 The Chicago Society of Etchers, (Charles B. Keeler “Ronda, the Impregnable” third left) was the first American printing group to begin issuing editions of prints, and Percival Rosseau (“Partners” bottom), best known for his hunting dong portraiture, lived just a generation before the Prairie Print Makers. In the United States, prints have long been considered to be an ideal art form because of their affordability. So please stop in to see us and all of the available work here in the gallery.

"Prints are intimate things and are meant to be handled and examined at close range, as is a rare book, a choice gem or a bit of old lace." --Coy Avon Seward Community Arts and Crafts Monthly - 1929

In 2011, Kansas will celebrate 150 years of statehood. Communities, individuals and state agencies throughout Kansas are planning events to commemorate the 150-year milestone. Through our involvement with Savor Kansas, a new grassroots effort that includes numerous organizations coming together to celebrate and showcase Kansas' arts and culture, SouthWind Gallery has established the Kansas-150 Art Competition. Savor Kansas will take place in Topeka, from June 1, 2011 through June 30, 2011, and will feature events involving visual arts, performing arts and culinary arts.

Kansas-150 Art Competition: Awards & Book Publication

The Kansas-150 Art Competition is a juried competition in which jurors will select 150 works for exhibition and sale by SouthWind Gallery. Three artists will be awarded monetary prizes for their artwork. These awards are:

        1st Place, $1,000
        2nd Place, $750
        3rd Place, $500

In addition, a number of Purchase Awards, funded by corporate and individual patrons, will be given to artists whose works are selected from the 150 entries. SouthWind Gallery will host an awards ceremony and sale of the Top 150 artworks at a Gala in June 2011, and will exhibit the art in its gallery from June 3, 2011-July 15, 2011.

SouthWind Gallery also will publish an art book that showcases all 150 pieces of art, and includes information about each of the artists whose work is selected. This is the second art book published by the gallery. In 2008, SouthWind Gallery, in cooperation with the KU Alumni Association, published “A Spring Day on the Hill: Art Inspired by the University of Kansas, which featured the work of 68 artists.

The SouthWind Gallery Kansas-150 Art Competition is open to all artists over the age of 18, working in two-dimensional media, who presently reside in, or have previously resided in Kansas, or have ties to the state.

The submitted artwork must draw its inspiration from the state of Kansas. That inspiration may include, but is not limited to depictions of rural landscapes, cityscapes, people, animals, city life, rural life, state landmarks and monuments, state or city parks and recreational areas. Paintings of historical Kansas events and indigenous plant or animal paintings are also acceptable.

We are very excited to also work with two nationally recognized visual art professionals Neil Patterson, OPAM, President, Oil Painters of America; and Kristen Hoerth, Editor in Chief, Southwest Art Magazine who will head the panel of jurors.

We are asking all of our friends to help spread the word for this new and exciting celebration of the arts in Kansas. If you would like more information about entering this competition, please visit our website at www.SouthWindArtGallery.com/callforentries.php
SouthWind Gallery, 3074 SW 29th, Topeka, premiers Big Sky Prairie, a two-person exhibit featuring new works by renowned Flint Hills artist Judith Mackey and rising-star Kansas artist Deb Schroer, on Friday, October 1, 2010, in conjunction with Topeka’s First Friday Art Walk. An Artists’ Reception will take place in the evening at SouthWind Gallery from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The Big Sky Prairie exhibit runs through November 15, 2010.

In her 40-year career as a professional artist, Judith Mackey has established herself as one of the leading plein air painters in the United States. She is best known for her impressionist oil paintings of the Flints Hills and has devoted much of her life to visually documenting the history and rare beauty of this landscape where she lives and works. Her efforts have culminated in an extraordinary body of work.

Artist Deb Schroer has spent most of her life in Strong City, Kansas--population 584, located in the heart of the Flint Hills. She has put down deep roots in this beautiful and unique land, but also is making a name for herself in the art world as a gifted plein air painter. Her work captures the natural beauty of the Flint Hills landscape, the excitement of the American rodeo, and poignant moments in the everyday lives of people and animals. With her broad understanding of color, she produces an incredibly rich pallet that gives her work immense depth and feeling.

Showing concurrently with the Big Sky Prairie exhibit are bronze works by award winning sculptor Catherine Hale Robins, of Lawrence, Kansas.

Also showing at SouthWind Gallery is an art display of unique floral arrangements by members of the Floral Art Club of Topeka. Seven original floral designs will be exhibited in conjunction with the Big Sky Prairie art exhibit opening. The Floral Art Club of Topeka is a non-professional group dedicated to the study of the art of floral design, and maintains membership in the Kansas Assoc. of Garden Clubs and the National Garden Club. The club’s floral artists have created designs to complement the Big Sky Prairie art exhibit and feature the natural beauty of the Kansas Flint Hills. Floral artists include Trella Anderson, Jayne Cafer, Anita Dreiling, Deesie Jackson, Carolyn Litwin, and Maggie Warren.
Garden House at Lake Shawnee, 37th & West Edge Rd.
(Refreshments served)

In June, SouthWind Gallery invited 35 artists to participate in a one-day plein air painting competition at the beautiful Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee. The paint-out was part of a fundraising event organized by the Friends of Ted Ensley Gardens. The public is invited to attend the juried art exhibit and sale on Sunday, September 19, 2010, from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., at the Garden House at Lake Shawnee, 37th & West Edge Road. Jurors for the art competition are Gary Blitsch and Sharon Hotchkiss of SouthWind Gallery.

The World Class Ensley Gardens would not be possible without the public and private partnership created between Friends of the Ted Ensley Gardens and Shawnee County Parks & Recreation. All proceeds from the art sale will be used to support local artists and to ensure that the Ted Ensley Gardens remain "World Class Gardens" for all to enjoy. *
Author of
Flyover People: Life on the Ground in a Rectangular State
with special guests, Artists Stan Herd and Louis Copt

Wednesday, September 15, 2010
3:00 p.m - 6:00 p.m.

Kansas author Cheryl Unruh, a writer for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Emporia Gazette, will be at SouthWind Gallery on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010 from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. to sign copies of her newly-published book, Flyover People: Life on the Ground in a Rectangular State.

Joining Cheryl for the book signing are Stan Herd and Louis Copt, well-known Kansas artists who are the subjects of one of her essays included in the book.

Excerpt from Flyover People: Life on the Ground in a Rectangular State (Hangin' with Louis and Stan, p. 35) "These are not just any two guys throwing paint on the building at Sixth and Merchant, but two of the finest artists Kansas has produced...They had been working on the mural off and on for several weeks when I met them. I spent an hour or so hanging out with these painters as they shaped and shaded the underbelly of storm clouds on their Flint Hills scene."

Cheryl began writing her weekly Flyover People column for the Emporia Gazette in 2003. Eighty of her Flyover People columns are included in the 197-page, softcover book. Cheryl's writing has received awards from the Kansas Press Association, the Kansas Association of Broadcasters and the Kansas Sampler Foundation. Her commentaries have aired on Kansas Public Radio in Lawrence and KTWU public television in Topeka.

If you are a Kansan, you will love this book, and if you have only flown over this state on your way to someplace else, you will love this book. Cheryl's writing style is lyrical, entertaining and true to the soul of Kansas and its people. You won't want to put the book down until you've read each and every beautifully written story!

Please us join at SouthWind Gallery to meet and greet Cheryl Unruh. Copies of her book will be available for purchase or you can buy them online on our website.
This sentiment is the base and anchor of his work and sets the emotional tone for any narrative that plays itself out in his paintings. Influenced by his surroundings, life experience and self-interpretation whether working in the studio or en plein aire he finds the rhythm of life that is reflected in his work.

In the studio, Zak creates dreamlike narratives that are drawn from memory and the landscape becomes a backdrop for human interaction. Folk art, surrealism and contemporary composition create ambiguity in both period and environment. Natural and man made elements are placed in concert, creating the freedom of a magical story for the viewer to imagine. To Zak it is the movement and emotional space created that is important.
After graduation she worked as a graphics designer and illustrator. Later Clemente returned to oil painting, but she traded her paintbrushes for a pallet knife. She uses bold colors and boldly applies layers of paint to her canvas. With her style of painting, Clemente is able to achieve a new reality for her subject matter—whether it’s a field of flowers or a rolling landscape. Her paintings are full of high energy and vibrant colors.

Debra’s work has found homes in private and corporate collections across the country. She is especially honored to have one of her sunflower field paintings, “Sunshine Grows in Kansas”, hanging in the Kansas Capitol building above the Governor’s private desk as part of the Kansas Governor’s office permanent art collection.
Surprisingly I discovered that there has been a significant growth since March of 2009. Continuing my curiosity I decided to type in "art taos nm" and to my astonishment I discovered that since March of 2009, Topeka has given Taos a run for their money on the Google Search Engines!

Looking over the past year, Topeka has gained national attention through the grassroots "Think Big Topeka" Google Fiber Experiment Campaign and this is one good example of how when one of us wins, we all win. Google turns into Topeka for a day - then suddenly, Kiplinger Personal Finance notes Topeka as one of the "Best Cities 2010"! Then again in July "Best City for Your Future: Topeka, Kan." It also is a fantastic complement to all the hard work our citizens have done inspired by John Villani's insights from the "Symposium 2005, The Arts Catalyst for Community Growth."

In September 2005, John Villani, Author of "The 100 Best Art Towns of America" was the featured speaker in the Community Foundation's symposium. Topeka was not mentioned in the aforementioned book, but Topekans embrased Villani's vision for all the possibilities the Arts offered Topeka. On creating a thriving arts community "The goal of it all is to attract new users and new residents into your downtown, to bring unused parts of your infrastructure back to life and attract people who bring their jobs with them," Villani said. Since that fateful day nearly 5 years ago, the Arts in Topeka have made great strides to become one of the next top 100 Arts Towns in America. With the guidance of the Heartland Visioning Committee, Arts Connect of Topeka, Think Big Topeka and many other businesses and agencies we are growing into significant competition for those listed "Top Arts Towns" in America. The NOTO project is poised for exciting developments in the next year and I am keeping my eyes open and my ear to the ground for even more exciting Arts Events in Topeka -- Contratulations Topeka you are truely becoming "A Great Arts Town!" Let's keep up the good work!

She holds a BS, MS, PhD in Biology and MFA in Sculpture and has received many national and international awards for her sculptures. "Living, natural forms are always integral to my work. Gesture, immediacy and intensity are key elements of my working mode and resultant art. I prefer to work rapidly and with intense focus in squishy, responsive media such as ceramic clay, plasticine, wax or plaster. Each medium gives expression to different aspects of my sculpture. Ceramic clay brings out the whimsical, while the exigencies of working in fast-setting plaster lead to bizarre, abstracted forms.

Catherine has a lively story about the two sculptures shown here and I'd like to share that with you.

"Seemingly, most Kansans have been involved in haying. It is an amazingly labor-involved way of fixing solar energy in a sustainable crop of grass in order to produce food (cows, goats, etc) and transportation (horses and their kin). Producing small square bales of brome hay for horses is perhaps the most labor-intensive.The grass is cut in the hottest, driest days of the year, strewn in orderly rows on the stubble, then baled by machinery that drops it out the backside like a grasshopper on your favorite vegetable. These "droppings"/ bales then are slung onto wagons by young (men mostly) in orderly stacks as they walk along with the wagon. The hay is put up into barns to supply "flakes" (sections of bales) for hand feeding to cherished horses. Our supplier employs a team with specific jobs when the giant truck and its trailer with a few hundred bales arrives.

"'Kansas Apollo' is about a young man on this team who was at his physical peak and was glorying in it! This was his golden summer. Despite the fact that hay is dusty and full of prickly skin-rash-producing things, he was stripped way low to the waist, wearing his chinks with the strap like a Highland piper's sporran in the appropriate place. Ironically, he was doing a job so easy I! can do it...tossing bales from the stack on the trailer to the guys below that were loading them carefully on the elevator.I saw a lot of humor as well as beauty in his pose.

"'104 degrees' is the adverse. This is what the Kansas Apollo will likely become.Balding, overweight and exhausted, accompanied by his faithful cattle dog, "104" is suffering in the heat. The team knows it and knows that he has paid his dues and will get up again and do what is necessary, fulfilling his role. They respect his wisdom and eye him carefully, wondering if that is not their future also."

This is Hulan Fleming's third year to be awarded entry in Paint the Parks100. He is best known for his paintings and prints of western art, Native American art, wildlife, landscape, seascape and astronomy subjects. For Hulan the love of art has always been there, so, in his middle teens his parents signed him up with “Art Instruction”, a Commercial Art course out of Minneapolis. This was interrupted when he was drafted in 1953. He then served in the 83rd engineers in France as Company Painter. While on leave he toured parts of Italy, France and England.

Hulan decided to go to Seattle Pacific University in the fall of 1957. After completing his Physics degree in June of 1965, he taught Jr. High Science for 3 years. During that time he joined Gallery North, and completed about 10 paintings selling 6 of them at his first show. This and other significant things encouraged him to change careers in 1968.

Those influencing him in the early years were Andrew Wyeth, Harold Lyon, Fred Oldfield and others. It was Fred Oldfield who encouraged him to go to the Western Art Auctions. It was at the First National Western Art Show & Auction in Ellensburg where he received his first award for his first cowboy painting. Since then he has become an accomplished professional artist, and sells his paintings all over the U.S.

Hulan describes his work as realistic impressionism, not truly historical to detail but bearing the spiritual idea of the place. His oils are done on hard board (Masonite type), which is an excellent surface and has been age tested to survive 600 or more years.

For the future, his interests are leaning towards the Plein Air (painting on site) and more impressionism. It will be interesting to watch and see what he will paint next.

Paint the Parks100 national touring exhibit is at SouthWind Gallery until July 15, 2010.
JURORS AWARD
"12 February, 2009"
Gauley River National Recreation Area
Lynn Boggess
Oil, 26" x 22"

In many large and small ways, Boggess' paintings reflect the entire tradition of landscape painting. When asked what major influences or past movements might have left their imprint, Boggess says that whatever images he might be studying at the time provide the nexus for his own work. Indeed, the viewers will find suggestions of the Romantics, the Luminists, the Impressionists, and the Expressionists. Yet, the artist does not set out to make his works conform to a preconceived style; rather, he melds the tradition and his own experience into a way of seeing and a style in landscape painting which is uniquely his own.

Stylistically reflective of European and American landscape painting, Boggess' work transcends the pitfall of betraying his predecessors and forges, in its place, an art of resolution and contemplation. Nature has been acknowledged in his work and accepted for what it has to offer in the way of healing and beauty. That last concept - beauty - is a loaded word in an age of art which often gives us truth with all its flaws and warts, or with the sophistication of irony, which is all-too-often uncomfortable with the idea that beauty is definable, desirable, or even necessary. Boggess' work cuts through such specious queries to a plainer truth: that beauty simply is ~ an unavoidable irrefutable fact of the natural world. In their unhedging presentation of this fact, Boggess' paintings offer solace and respite, even to the most casual of viewers, just as do the original locations in Nature which were his impetus. (comments by Marian J. Hollinger, Curator - James David Brooks Memorial Gallery - Fairmont State College)

JURORS AWARD
"Birth of a Nation"
Wind Cave National Park
Barbara Summers Edwards
Oil, 30" x 20"

After graduating from Utah State University in Illustration and working as a freelance illustrator, Barbara evolved as a fine art, oil and watercolor painter. Commonly portraying figurative imagery, her painterly realistic paintings have received numerous awards as they have been exhibited in international, national, regional and state juried, invitational, group and two person exhibits. Two of her paintings were purchased by The Utah Arts Council as part of the State of Utah's Permanent Collection. One of those, "Gotcha!", hangs in the First Lady of Utah's State Office.

Barbara had the honor of being juried into prestigious International 2002 Arts for the Parks Top 100 Exhibit and she was awarded the Yellowstone National Park Purchase Award and the Arts for the Parks Wildlife Award of Merit. In that same exhibit, in 1996, US Art Magazine selected her painting for its Award of Excellence. Other exhibits and awards include: Oil Painters of America National Exhibit 1995, 2001-2003; Award of Excellence 1995; Regional Award of Excellence 1999; Utah Watercolor Society-Award of Excellence and Inter-mountain Society of Artists-First Place Painting Award. In 1999 Barbara's painting, "When I was Child", was published in the North Light Book, The Best of Portrait Painting.
A native of Idaho, Barbara lives in Smithfield, Utah with her artist husband, Glen.

"My subject matter, color and style are a very personal, intuitive part of who I am since I discovered art at the age of twelve. I enjoy working with figurative imagery although more and more I am examining landscape and often combine the two. I love watching people, especially children as I wish to see the world of wonder anew through their eyes. I am most interested in small everyday moments often missed or seemingly unimportant compared to the social and headline grabbing events of the world.

In a very painterly and vigorous approach I brush in shapes of broken color, defining the form and composition I have in mind. I work mostly from photographs I have taken either on one of many research trips, hire models or both. I build the surface with color and textural subtleties in contrast to the strong light and dark patterns I am fond of using. Thus my love of quilts and flowers inherited from my mother and grandmother.

Although a great admirer of impressionism, I do not consider myself a true impressionist. I enjoy working with the impressions of light and color, but also want to narrate a story or idea to capture a moment of life. My intention is for those who view my work to not only see the color, value, composition and all the other requirements of a good painting but also to share a definite feeling or memory of the timeless human drama represented.

Someone once asked me how I made my paintings appear so powerful and yet at the same time feel so gentle. I'm not sure how to answer the question, but, I consider the question a great compliment."
"Sapphirine Cove"
Acadia National Park
Steven Hileman
Oil, 20" x 24"

Through his paintings, Steven Hileman desires to share his personal vision of God’s creation.

Art has been an important factor throughout Steven’s life. Growing up in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, Steven spent countless hours developing his skills through personal study and his various art classes. At Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Florida, Steven studied under accomplished artists who grounded him in the basic principles of art and encouraged him to pursue excellence through knowledge and discipline. After earning his degree in Communications with a concentration in Commercial Art, Steven spent three years as a staff illustrator for A Beka Books, Inc., a large publishing company in Pensacola. On his own time, Steven continued to develop his painting skills, and also began exhibiting his paintings in juried shows around the country. Leaving his illustration job behind, Steven and his family relocated to Orland, Maine, where he began pursuing painting full-time. Shortly following this transition, Steven’s paintings began receiving more recognition through various galleries and shows, and today, they continue to draw the attention of art lovers and collectors. Consequently, his paintings can be found in numerous private collections around the country.

Considering himself a realist with impressionistic influences, Steven paints directly from his own life experiences, attempting to capture with honesty and immediacy his impressions of the world around him. Influenced by many of the great American, Russian, and European masters of the past as well as various contemporary masters, Steven paints with careful attention to drawing, values, color, and edges. He constantly strives to capture the subtle relationships between these elements to create beautiful and meaningful works of art.
"Jackson Lake Serenity"
Grand Teton National Park
Keri Vanderlaan
Watercolor, 14" x 21"

Keri Vanderlaan is an emerging artist. Her third watercolor painting "Jackson Lake Serenity" has won the coveted Region III award in the 2009 Paint the Parks competition. She also had great success with her first watercolor painting “A Gift From the Navajos” by winning a Top 100 award in the final Arts for the Parks competition. That painting has since appeared in Splash10, a popular coffee table book by the publishers of The Artist’s Magazine. She also had graphite pencil and colored pencil drawings of people and animals in the Art-A-Fair Festival, an annual juried show in Laguna Beach, California.

Keri is a naturally talented artist. She is self taught, having studied by reading books and art instructional magazines, and observing masterful paintings by other artists. She has been working in watercolor recently, but is accomplished in pencil, colored pencils, acrylics and pastels. She is also a very talented portrait artist. She paints and draws photorealistic, highly detailed pictures.

She is a passionate nature lover. The beauty and serenity of nature is her inspiration to paint. She lives in Silverado Canyon, a very beautiful rural area of Southern California which gives her great inspiration as well. She has been to 15 national parks to date and to Alaska. Her goal in life is to see and faithfully depict the beauty of our world and our people for all to appreciate.
