SOUVENIR ITEMS from our Indigenous Brothers & Sisters!

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ VISUAL FINE ARTS OF THE PHILIPPINES:

NEW BEGINNINGS
For Indigenous Peoples, the visual arts are central to identity, place and belonging, and an expression of a unique and enduring tradition. Thus, the visual arts have an important place in the continuing survival of Indigenous Peoples and their cultures. In the Philippines, Indigenous Peoples’ visual arts provide subsistence livelihood through handicrafts and souvenir production.

However, unique and distinct examples of fine art can be seen in practically every corner of the country. From the “Fish” at the Deep Forest Resort in Palawan to the piece called “Earth” near Baguio, from Ifugao baskets and carvings in Northern Luzon to the colorful and evocative weavings from Mindanao, ample evidence can be found of
outstanding examples of world-class art. A mechanism needs to be developed to expose the best art to the world and to expand the sector beyond subsistence livelihood.

The mission of the KALINAWA ART FOUNDATION is to build on the inherent talent of the
Indigenous People of the Philippines by creating institutional mechanisms to contribute to building a visual fine arts sector that celebrates their culture, promotes talent, develops skills, facilitates training and builds cross-cultural education. Results will be measured by the increased visibility and understanding of Indigenous People and improved income for participating artists.

KALINAWA ART FOUNDATION provides assistance for the development of the Indigenous Peoples’ Art sector in the Philippines through a series of different activities. In order to promote Indigenous Peoples’ visual arts, a series of exhibitions built around a competition and sales of the art has been held in various regional centers. While the program of regional exhibitions will
be ongoing, the intent is to establish a regular National Indigenous Peoples’ art exhibition in Manila, to which winners from various regional competitions will be invited to present their work.

To create a sustainable activity, a focus on more than creating art is needed. The KALINAWA ART FOUNDATION will work with others to establish copyright standards to protect the art and foster institutional mechanisms to maximize the opportunities for Indigenous Peoples’ visual arts that are consistent with the Indigenous Peoples’ cultures and communities. By continuing to provide information and material support for building community based arts infrastructure to support the development of the Indigenous Peoples’ visual art sector, the FOUNDATION also provides support for the development of the entire visual art community.

Source

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://souvenirshopper.blogspot.com/2009/12/heres-another-keen-idea-souvenir-items.html' title='Here's another keen idea... Instead of spending money for souvenir items, why not sponsor a child/children, a family or a home?

A lot of organizations offer these types of programs. So on your wedding day, you will be distributing small cards instead, saying.. "Instead of buying souvenir items, we are sponsoring ____ instead."
You can even promote the organization and encourage them to sponsor as well.

Souvenirs after all are meant to remind the attendees about the occasion they have been to or what they have witnessed. What a wonderful memory to leave your guests.. the legacy of loving and sharing!

In weddings, it's not about the most expensive, the most extravagant or the most flamboyant. Sounds familiar, right?

Magnolia, one of the top ice cream brands in the Philippines, has come up with an all-dairy ice cream that will definitely awaken the child in you. After its 5-year collaboration with Nestle and its long absence from the market, the Magnolia Ice Cream legacy is now reinvigorated by its reintroduction into the market within the last 2 years and the opening of Parfaits & Splits Ice Cream Parlor.

CREAMY & ALL-DAIRY EXPERIENCE

Parfaits & Splits Ice Cream Parlor is the first and only ice cream parlor in the Metro to dish up the original Magnolia All-Dairy concoctions, which used to be served at the (original) Magnolia Dairy Bar (est. 1972). At Parfaits & Splits, you can choose from an endless list of delightful sundaes, waffles, cobblers, parfaits, shakes and the crowd-favorite splits. Feel free to overload with nuts, bananas, cookie bits, sprinkles and marshmallows if you're feeling creative. Come in at any time - rain or shine. Here are some home-made gift ideas that you can use. You can even make this the perfect bonding time for your family!

1. Home-made Baked Goodies such as Cookies, Brownies or Muffins

Get to the kitchen and start creating simple baked goods such as cookies, brownies or muffins. You can even pack it in jars, plastic containers or attractive pouches/plastics.

Measure so you can make the most of each batch you bake and to make your baked goods festive, you can make use of sprinkles to liven up each treat. Buy a lot of sprinkles as an alternative to putting raisins, walnuts, etc. if those are too expensive for you.

2. Printable Coupons, Certificates and Awards

Who says only kids can use these as gifts to their parents? There are fun coupons available online, or you can even make and design your own either using the computer (if you know how to use simple design programs) or by using creative tools such as colored papers, etc. You can then put these inside greeting cards or use them as stocking stuffers.

3. Make use of Arts & Crafts

Let's face it, everyone has, at one time or another, done arts and crafts either for school or for fun.

Make use of items available at home such as popsicle sticks, coffee cans or even plain white tshirts to make items such as personalized message boards, pen holders and a lot more. Get creative! After all, it's not the amount of the item... it's how much love, time and effort you put in each gift!

4. Make soaps of different sizes, designs, colors and scent!

You can even put special messages in the soap as you make it. You do not even have to buy a lot of different molds to make soap. You can make use of soap containers or even the round bathroom cups.

5. Goodie bags

Goody bags are not just for kiddie parties and Halloween. The assortment of goodies in the bag will have to differ depending on the age range of your recipients.

Mix and match food items such as chocolocates, assorted nuts and even dried fruits!

What are you waiting for? Get creative!

Did this short article help you get your creative juices flowing?
I hope it did. We appreciate hearing how you did.

Please feel free to suggest other budget-friendly ideas you may have for the holiday season. Have fun!

SOUVENIR SUPPLIER FEATURE: Go Healthy with Calaman-C Concentrate!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 305px; height: 198px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibWq_CQ4HpGqKkR54u6XX-T2UCFyX4v8hIjSXDk6goWKkYTn8CZohOtcl8ir76D4M6Q7FjQjTaMff0Dt_-KerSzm_PHVeEA0YZf10wtYzgkamJIHFplSlMuD3zVEQNIb_4ccvLzLq01K8/s400/for+ads_01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413472248481083042" />
Go Healthy with Calaman-C Concentrate!

People today have wised up. Imposing and distinctive, it marks the point of connection. At night, it shines vibrantly as if to make known Manila is the heart of the Metropolis.

Manila has since expanded to become the core of the Philippines largest metropolis. The city is now part of Metropolitan Manila or Metro Manila, which is a bustling metropolis of four cities and thirteen municipalities.

Metro Manila is popular for its charming sights and astounding golden sunset views from the shores of enchanting Manila Bay. Because of its strategic location, this modern and teeming metropolis is the take-off point for further travel to other parts of the country the Gateway to the Philippines.

Pause for a second and you will feel the richness of the culture emanating from all directions. Carry on, and you become part of the ebb and flow.

At the turn of the 20th century, the great American city planner, Architect Daniel Burnham, noted, "the old walled city of Intramuros at the mouth of the Pasig River is one of the best preserved medieval cities anywhere in the world." Intramuros is a legacy of the 17th-century Spanish Occupation. At the center of the Old Walled City is the grand Manila Cathedral, well known for its detailed stone carvings, stained glass mosaics, and rose windows. The present Romanesque edifice rises majestically over the remains of five predecessors, the first of which was in 1581.

Not too far, is the old San Agustin Church with notable baroque touches, and 1875th trompe-l'oeil ceiling paintings. The church courtyard is grace by several granite sculptures of lions, which were gifts from Chinese converts to Catholicism. Next to the church are the restored botanical gardens of Fr. Jose Blanco, now a favorite place for wedding receptions.

Guarding the vital entrance to the Pasig River is Fort Santiago, an imposing fortress of majestic proportions, which was once the seat of Spanish military power. Today it stands as a memorial to Dr Jose Rizal, who was in prison here before his execution in 1896.

Across the Pasig River from Fort Santiago is Binondo or Chinatown, which is the center of business for the Chinese-Filipino community, and the hub for bargain computers and printers, organic and herbal products including precious stones and metals. Chinatown, a symbol of the Chinese presence in the Philippines, has kept some run-down but amazing 19th-century wooden houses complete with mother-of-pearl windows, elaborate carvings, and tiled street sign.

Downtown, towards the center of Manila is Quiapo the fancy of many bargain-hunters where stalls sell arrays of goods and handicrafts at prices that are practically a steal. In close proximity is the Malacanang Palace, the presidential home. Adjacent to it is a museum of presidential memorabilia that is open for public viewing.

Going from sophisticated to nonchalance, real and otherwise, requires no more than a short trip. Every night the artsy and the moneyed clique troop to these holes in the walls where they co-exist.

Metropolitan Manila reflects the best of the 7,107 more islands. Bustling like any other metropolis, it can be a bit intimidating at first. However, Metro Manila tends to grow on you the more time you spend in it.

Reconstructions in Intramuros including Puerta Real and Baluarte de San Diego converted some gates into parks and performing venues. Chambers along its gates are now full of art galleries, souvenir shops, restaurants, coffee shops, even cyber cafes. Fort Santiago, the site for political prisoners from the Spanish to Japanese times is now a park where one may enjoy a leisurely ride aboard a horse-drawn carriage.

A stone's throw away from Rizal Park is the Ermita and the Malate districts. The former has the most display of antique art galleries, curio, studios, and souvenir shops. The latter is the place that never sleeps-cozy cafes, exclusive clubs, music lounges, and performance theaters. These two places make up the Manila's Tourist Belt.

The centre of performing arts in the country is the Philippine Cultural Center. There is also the Folk Arts Theater, the historic Metropolitan Theatre, and an open-air theatre in Rizal Park.

The Manila nightlife offers everything from dazzling cultural shows to futuristic discotheques, sensational entertainment lounges, and fashionable bars. Roxas Boulevard, the sunset strip, has the gathering of posh hotels, casinos, and lively nightspots including beer-and-grill gardens. Some of them in historic buildings making them the perfect party place in the city-the ultimate cosmopolitan delight.

The Metropolis expresses who he is-exuberance, joyful through good times and bad.

Like most places, first impressions are the most important and the first impressions you receive of Manila are its humidity, humanity, and love for food.

Metro Manila is one big gastronomic trip of many and mixed cuisines. The Illustrado Restaurant in Intramuros is famous for its colonial ambiance and Spanish provincial cuisine. The Remedios Circle of the old Malate district is the most-desired watering hole of artists, designers and the cafe society. Equally, the Binondo or Chinatown diners offer authentic Chinese cuisine, the only place to go for a taste of true mainland delicacies. In addition, there are numerous restaurants serving American and other Western dishes notably within the financial districts.

Filipino specialty restaurants abound-within the country's financial center to prestigious places to the remotest corner of the metropolis enticing visitors with varied island flavors.

First-class hotels and restaurants attract guests with performances by local pop artists, folk dance troupes, string quartets, and jazz bands. The nightlife in Metro Manila is always vibrant and inviting. The districts of Ermita and Malate in Manila are the well-liked tourist nightspots. Similarly, the urbane Global City party clubs are the rage of the stylish and chic upper class.

The mighty metropolis throbs and moves to its own sound: traffic, horns, buzz of 1.6 million people going about their daily business. Pause for a second and you will feel the pulse. Carry on and you will contribute to the sights and sounds of the metropolis.

Welcome to Metropolitan Manila, to a blend of cultures, flavors, sights, sounds to behold and experience, where all are gracious enough to make you their friend.

Source for Places to visit in Metro Manila, Philippines by Lizzie Elzingre

----------------

Ten free souvenirs to remember your vacation by Andrea Gilson

Remember your Vacation without Spending Barely a Cent on Souvenirs

Photographs are the most obvious way to remember your travels but there are other things to pick up along the way that cost little or nothing and will outlive the usual souvenir shop fare. The things below will bring you back to the moments you want to remember more vividly than a t-shirt or globe shaker. Bring a few zip-log bags in your luggage to contain your treasures.

Pick up a newspaper from your destination. You will have a record of the exact date of your trip. It is not necessary to buy the paper unless that is a part of your daily custom. Papers are often complimentary at hotels, and a section can always be found lying abandoned. While in Cape Town, I picked up two front pages. One from The Cape Times and one from The Cape Argus, each newspaper featured a separate great white shark incident. That is an extreme example, but it brings back to mind the conversations I overheard in shops and cafes that week.

Collecting a sample of soil or sand lets you bring a tangible part of your vacation home with you. Scoop a handful into a baggie and when you return, dry it on a paper towel and then display in glass jars. Old spice jars work well for this. Label the jar with the date and location and you are on your way to a satisfying hobby. I label my jars with a black permanent marker. As more samples join the collection from various trips, it becomes clear that all dirt is not the same.

At a restaurant or as you meet fellow travelers, there is always the opportunity to collect business cards. Make an effort not to throw them away. Use them to remember places and people. Pick them up from counter tops and ask people for them while you are getting to know them in event lines. Even if John Smith is not a local at your destination, you will remember meeting him and what you discussed. When friends ask you for a recommendation, you can provide the details to lead them to a favorite Indian Cuisine place you fell in love with in New Zealand. The people you meet randomly while on vacation might lead to a long term friendship or a business venture.

Save menus from places you dine at while on vacation. Even if the food was not that great, you will remember it. Fancy menus, of course, are not an option to carry away, but ask the server if there is a paper copy. If so, keep it. In my experience, even moderately fancy places will not turn you down if you simply ask them if you can keep the menu.

While you are pouring over that postcard sale carousel, buy an extra one. Send it home to yourself. You will experience the same joy that your family and friends do when they see that you had thought of them. This is a fun way to lengthen your vacation, and take the edge off of the call back to reality.

If you try a unique cocktail or type of beer while vacationing, peel the label off of the bottle and let it dry. Foreign beer names are often hard to remember or even pronounce.

Save airline flight ticket, bus ticket, and attraction ticket stubs. Keep parking passes, brochures, and even car rental agreements to add to your memory zip-loc bag. These pieces of paper will let you relive your vacation long after that t-shirt becomes stained or a globe shaker gets broken.

Coins and paper money that is left over from an international vacation is fun to save. The money likely will not do you much good back home, so exchange most back to your home currency. Keep a few coins and maybe a paper bill if it is especially nice. If you travel abroad often, you will gain a nice collection. Keep the foreign money in a dish on a table in your home. When your guests see it, they will certainly start up a conversation about it. Your travels can be relived again as you get to talk about your journeys.

Writing down notes while vacationing in a journal is the best way to bring back the moments. Your journal does not have to be extensive. Some traveler's keep detailed journal entries each day. For those that do not want to spend that much time writing, a few words throughout the day are enough. For example, a small notepad the size of a deck of cards is sufficient. Write down quick phrases like, the strange lady in the red hat, exhausted after hikeor, made friends with a fish. Even these small notes will remind you of something that struck you in the moment while traveling.

Put all of you're the saved items that will fit into a large zip-lock bag. The rest keep safe in your luggage. For years to come, these will be the best memories of your trip as it unfolded.

Source for Ten free souvenirs to remember your vacation by Andrea Gilson

------------

LOL, this is what i do!
Great article on free souvenir items to remember your vacation by! =)

What to Buy as a Vacation Souvenir Gift? by Victoria Tiegert

When we go on vacation, there are often people left at home that we would like to pick up a little something for on our trip. It is a way of letting them know that they were on our minds and in our hearts, maybe even a way of saying that we wished they were there. You can run into a souvenir shop and grab a T-shirt off the rack, but in reality, how useful is that? They probably won't wear it more than once. If they do, they'll be getting the inevitable, "Oh, you went to "wherever", how was it?". Of course, they didn't go and have to explain that to each asker.

So, what is something that you can bring back to these people that they will truly appreciate and enjoy? The gift and souvenir shops at your destination will abound in great ideas and if you are in a tourist attraction place, you won't have to go far at all to find one. The hotel lobby may even have just what you need.

First, determine who you are going to be shopping for. Most of us don't want to spend a whole lot of our vacation time in the shops, so we should have a list prepared with a few notes of ideas jotted down by each name. This will go far in determining how long you spend meandering through the aisles. Also, come up with a general budget for each person. This will cut down on how much you spend, or overspend, leaving you struggling with the remainder of your vacation dollars.

What types of people are you buying for? Children, adults, males, females, hobbyists, etc. all have different styles and interests, so keep those in mind as you head out for your souvenir shopping. The following is a list of items that you may want to consider as they fit with the person you are buying for.

*Stemware/shot glasses-For the adult drinker, these are great little token gifts. Give some forethought, however to transporting them home. They will need to be well-wrapped and fit nicely into your bags or the shop may ship for a small fee.

*Stuffed animals-Children will appreciate having a soft plush and there are usually plenty to choose from.

*Coffee table books-These can get pricey but they are usually full of beautiful pictures and tell a bit about where you've been.

*Jewelry-Especially if you are in tropical locations, jewelry will abound. Shell necklaces and earrings are wonderful female gifts that will really get used.

*Journals and writing utensils-If there is a writer on your list, pick up a journal or a notebook and a pen with the vacation destination on the cover.

*Collection Items-Most people have something that they collect. Mine is bells, but some people collect spoons, thimbles, figurines, etc. If you have been in the person's house and paid attention, you've probably seen something that they seem to really like.

*Hats-Ball caps are popular among men and some women and children, as well.

*Decorative candles-These are perfect, but be careful with the scents as some people are highly allergic.

There are tons of things to choose from besides the old standby T-shirt. You can even go online and browse there. You may even be able to get all your shopping done that way and never have to enter the shops at all. This will save you time as well as money. The shops are tempting and once you're in the spirit of vacation, it seems that money just flows until before you know it, you're having to be careful that you don't run short to enjoy yourself. People love gifts and will appreciate that you thought of them no matter what you choose, but it's certainly nice when you find something that really says "them".

Source for What to Buy as a Vacation Souvenir Gift? by Victoria Tiegert

--------------

Vacation Souvenir giftins is about making it personal... Which is the Keenest Souvenir?

If you bring home a souvenir from wherever you've been, you'll get a thank you, the knick-knack will be put on a shelf to gather dust or worse, put in a drawer, never to be seen again. At least until the movers come, or the trash man.

What to do? You want to bring home more than a post card. You want those you love to know you've been somewhere memorable, but you don't want a bit of junk. How do you give them a souvenir that they'll like and maybe even remember where it came from a year from now?

Know what your friends and relatives like. If you bring Uncle Jonas home a bottle of perfume, he'll wonder where you left your mind. It doesn't hurt to ask. Those who might expect a souvenir will be flattered if you ask them what they'd like. Don't just ask them what they want. Tell them what you're hoping to see, and they'll immediately tell you what they know about it. Someone who's interested in Shakespeare will appreciate a series of pictures of the Globe Theater, and will treasure them.

Try to find something that you can't get anywhere else: Buying someone a scarf you can get in Wal Mart won't endear you to anyone. Rather, get something that has the name of the place you're in on it somewhere. As in: "Someone went to Preddy Prairie and all I got was this lousy T-shirt."

Stay within your budget: This shouldn't even be mentioned here, but the overwhelming desire to get everyone a souvenir has to be curbed. You also don't want to get that perfect genuine Hawaiian Native Electric Blanket that costs $50 for Uncle Barfy, and then have to get everyone else something that costs fifty-cents.

Know the rules: Don't end up having to pay $30 for the bottle of fine wine you picked up for $3 at a store in someplace in Lower Slobovia. Check with customs before you leave. They'll be glad to tell you.

Practicality is okay: Opting for coffee mugs with pictures of pirates or Wahinis or Louisiana brown pelicans is just fine. It says you were there, and the person you're giving it to can drink coffee from it for years, if they'll keep it. The T-shirt with "Lake City, The home town of Colorado's Cannibal, Alferd Packer" will not only give your recipient a laugh, but laughs for as long as the T-shirt lasts. The floppy hat with "Divide, Colorado. Center of the known universe," will be fun for a long time. It will also keep the sun out their eyes.

Of course, you may run onto that once-in-a-lifetime gift that just cries to be bought for your sister, like a genuine poison arrow frog, but resist it. Think ahead a little bit, and try to think of things that will be remembered. After all, that's what you're bringing home. Memories.

Source for Tips for Buying Souvenirs by Don Swearingen
----------

I love these tips for buying souvenirs. Check out the local stores and markets in order to buy the most unusual, authentic and best value souvenirs.

AVOID SOUVENIR JUNK

Many items that you may consider buying as a souvenir will be absolute rubbish. Of course if they are cheap, and you just want a fun item, then go for it.

TAKE YOUR TIME

On holiday on the Algarve this year a beautiful red handbag caught my eye. It was reasonably priced on a local market stall. I passed this stall a few times and despite the owner's attempts to persuade me to purchase, I took my time. The last day before going home I bought it and the stall owner told me that I was lucky that he still had these bags in stock. Well, if he had not I would not have lost any sleep over it. However, I did get a good bargain and something that I love to use. I am glad I took my time as, so often in the past, I have made a snap purchase only to find out later that it was either not what I really wanted, or what it seemed to be.

BARTER

Never be afraid to barter especially if you are traveling in Europe. Many countries shop owners love to barter as much as their customers do,so go for it.

REMEMBER HOME

A souvenir from a much enjoyed vacation may look lovely in the shop in Timbuktu, Phuket or somewhere equally exotic, but will it really fit on Aunt Maude's sideboard back home. The odds are that your gift will be a disaster in every sense.

CONCLUSION

Personally I try to avoid the tourist shopping areas. Usually all you find is row upon row of shops, all selling pretty much the same goods, which are poor quality and overpriced. Shop around but don't waste too much valuable holiday time shopping. After all the best souvenirs for yourselves are possibly some photographs and the great experiences and memories that your holiday will supply, which are worth their weight in gold.

------
Source: Tips for Buying Souvenirs by Ethel Smith

Whenever i shop, i just quickly go through the items available in the tourist shops to see what is generally available. From there, i then go to the local shops where unique yet cheap items are sold. It's still best to consult locals about this or expats who know their way around.
