La celebrazione religiosa e civile più notevole dell’anno è in Soverato la Festa di Maria Santissima di Portosalvo, detta Madonna a mare: un atto di fede assai comune presso le popolazioni rivierasche del Meridione d’Italia, ma che in Soverato è occasione di un imponente raduno di fedeli e turisti.

Nel 1906, Rocco Caminiti, capitano di nave e sindaco del paese, scampò ad una tempesta, e fece voto di costruire una chiesa in onore della Madonna dei marinai, e celebrare una festa.

La tradizione nata attorno alla chiesetta privata è divenuta propria di tutta la città, e, grazie all’intelligente attività di un comitato di cittadini operante da molti anni, occupa il momento centrale dell’estate di Soverato e del comprensorio.

Dopo un inteso triduo religioso, e occasioni di giochi di bambini, simpatici spettacoli e sagra del pesce, e una Messa domenicale officiata dall’Arcivescovo di Catanzaro, la Statua di Maria di Portosalvo viene condotta da una grande folla fino alla spiaggia, da dove muove una processione che passa davanti al Nocchiero Hotel di Soverato di navicelle, paranze, barche, motoscafi, che accompagnano l’Immagine a benedire il territorio cittadino. Sono spesso presenti un’unità della Marina Militare e mezzi aerei di Carabinieri e Guardia di Finanza.

Soveratesi e ospiti accolgono la Statua con devozione e allegria testimoniata dai tuffi collettivi, mentre gli stabilimenti balneari fanno a gara di giochi pirotecnici. Un superbo spettacolo di fuochi pirotecnici, offerto dall’Amministrazione comunale, conclude a notte la manifestazione.
